Vatican Dress Code – What to Wear When Visiting Vatican City

Millions of tourists visit the Vatican every year and despite it’s widely known that sacred places require modest wearing, many are still denied entrance because of their wrong outfit. This is why it’s so important to be aware of the Vatican dress code for both men and women.

While in winter it’s easier to follow the dress code required in the Vatican because whatever you wear, you are likely to have a coat on top, summer is usually the season when most tourists are sent away. Both men and women need to follow the Vatican dress code, which comes down to the common principles of modesty and decency.

Since Vatican City includes some of the main landmarks in Rome , you will certainly want to visit them, so knowing what to wear is very important.

Fret not, here we are giving you all the tips you need to know about the dress code for visiting the Vatican to avoid any problems at the entrance, whether you are visiting independently or joining a Vatican tour .

Vatican dress code for women

Female tourists often encounter more issues, especially in the hot season. Summer months in Rome , and in Italy in general, can be very hot so shorts, dresses, and sleeveless tops are common. However, even with such hot weather, there are plenty of outfits you can wear to go to the Vatican without spending the rest of your sightseeing day sweating and panting.

When visiting the Vatican, women should avoid wearing mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, tops with deep cleavage, shorts that are above the knees, and hats. Also, jewelry and tattoos that are too big, too visible, and in some way offensive to religion or common décor should be kept covered.

Here are a few suggestions of items women can wear to enter the Vatican sights that are good in all seasons:

  • long skirts
  • midi skirts
  • long dresses (not sleeveless)
  • midi dresses (not sleeveless)
  • long linen or cotton trousers
  • long denim trousers
  • Capri pants, meaning all leggings or trousers below the knee
  • long-sleeve shirts and blouses
  • short-sleeve t-shirts
  • 3/4-sleeve shirts

Vatican dress code for men

To visit the Vatican, men, too, are required to follow a modest dress code. Just like women, also men are not allowed to wear hats, short shorts, and sleeveless T-shirts. And just like women, men, too, are required not to show large tattoos or personal objects that are too visible and somehow offensive to religion or lack common and moral decency.

Here are some suggested items men can wear to visit the Vatican that are accepted both in summer and winter:

  • long trousers/denim
  • Bermuda shorts below the knees
  • long-sleeve tops
  • long-sleeve button-down shirts

Vatican dress code for kids

The Vatican dress code is not strictly applied to newborns and toddlers for obvious reasons. Kids and teenagers, however, should follow the same principles of modesty.

Teenage girls won’t be allowed in if wearing mini-skirts and sleeveless tops, and teenage boys

What to avoid carrying when visiting the Vatican

Apart from the clothing items that you can’t wear when visiting the Vatican, there are also several items that are not allowed in. Here are some of the things you shouldn’t carry with you if you are going to the Vatican, whether it’s the Basilica of Saint Peter or you are visiting the Vatican Museums .

  • sharp metal objects
  • large backpacks
  • longer umbrellas
  • camera tripods
  • video cameras
  • alcoholic drinks
  • foods and beverages

If you still carry some of these things such as a large backpack or a long umbrella, it will be stored in the wardrobe, which is free of charge. Obviously, the Vatican Museums are not going to store weapons in the wardrobe! Since you might not be renting a room near the Vatican , it’s better to check beforehand what you are carrying.

Pets are not allowed to enter any of the Vatican sights. An exception is made for guide dogs for blind people and dogs certified for pet therapy (on a leash and wearing a muzzle).

What to wear if you meet the Pope

Those lucky enough to have a private appointment with the pope lined up are also required to follow a specific dress code.

Men should wear a tuxedo, while women are required to wear a modest dress below the knees, long sleeves, and obviously no cleavage. Women meeting with the Pope should also wear a black veil on their heads as if in a grieving outfit.

I remember when Ivanka and Melania Trump visited the Pope in 2017, their black veil triggered countless jokes on social media. This is because most people are not familiar with the Vatican dress code, as this is exactly how women are supposed to appear in the pope’s presence.

For example, the red dress of Raissa Gorbaciova in 1989 and the white outfit of Cherie Blair when meeting the Pope in 2006 were both faux pas because red is too bright and white dresses are only prerogative of Catholic queens and members of royal families such as the queen of Spain and the queen of Belgium.

Even though I’d been to the Vatican previously, re-visiting on my 10 day birthday trip to Paris and Italy last year was absolutely magical.

I felt so fortunate to have been linked up with The Roman Guy tours . Not only were there were only 3 people on my Vatican tour versus the groups of 25-50 around us but my guide Nina was a local fashionista! After the tour ended, she gave me the inside scoop on what to wear to the Vatican plus shared her tips on how to dress like an Italian woman. LOVED her!

These tips on what to wear to the Vatican are based on her fashion savvy Roman style. Keep reading to find out why they are!

What to Wear to the Vatican

Generally speaking when entering any religious building modesty should be considered. However, depending on varying factors this may or may not be enforced or practiced.

Per local guidelines, when visiting the Vatican please cover your knees and shoulders.

Even though Roman summers may be blistering hot, when you step inside the Vatican Museum and St Peters Basilica it is much cooler inside than outside so you don’t have to worry about overheating. Here are a few ideas on what to wear to the Vatican in the summer heat.

Vatican travel outfit ideas

The general idea is to wear a breezy long dress or trousers (for knee coverage) and pair with a light removable layer such as a denim jacket or cardigan you can wear to cover your shoulders once inside. Jeans and a cute sleeved top are perfect when the weather is moderate.

The rest of the year, you’ll be fine with long sleeves and jeans. Just be mindful of low necklines, sheer fabrics, and clothing that’s overly fitting in certain places.

Tip:  Versatile is the key to a  travel capsule wardrobe , pack items which you can easily mix and match!

About my Vatican Tour

If the name Roman Guy sounds familiar it might be because the owner proposed to his girlfriend on Travel Fashion Girl! Can you believe it? How cool is that!

I explored the Ancient City on my own when I visited Rome previously in 2008. This time around, I was happy to try a couple of city tours with The Roman Guy including a visit to the Vatican and their Golf Cart City Tour which I highly recommend – it helps save your feet from going into overdrive and it’s a nice way to get your bearings around Rome!

This company specializes in intimate local group tours and their Vatican group has no more than a dozen people at a time (others had 40-50). It felt like I had my own personal guide. Plus, you get to go inside the Vatican a whole hour before it’s open to the public. Kind of awesome!

I won’t lie, though. My fashionable Vatican tour guide Nina did make it extra special because not only did she have a PHD in post classical archaeology and a master in Christian Archaeology but she is also extremely friendly and personable. It was like hanging out with one of your favorite gal pals!

Insider travel tips

  • March and October are Nina’s favorite months to enjoy Rome. March because it’s sunny but not hot and the end of September to early October has the best weather without the high costs or swarms of tourists.
  • She says that Cappuccino and Cornetto are the perfect roman breakfast or a simple Coffee and Croissant.
  • Her perfect travel outfit for the Vatican? What she was wearing that day: Denim Jacket, Maxi Dress, and Birkenstocks styled to perfection!
Remember: No matter where you go there are always travelers with varying levels of respect and courtesy with regards to their choice of clothing in religious sites. It is your decision whether or not you wish to adhere to or respect the clothing guidelines of other cultures on your travels. Please read this post for more ideas on how to dress stylishly for conservative countries .

Navigating the Vatican Dress Code: Dos and Don’ts Explained

January 4, 2024

If you’re traveling to the Italian capital, it’s very likely a trip to the Vatican is high on your agenda. And why wouldn’t it be? You may also be wondering if there’s a Vatican dress code you should keep in mind.  Spoiler: there is. Acting as a modern-day gateway into centuries worth of incredible history, the Vatican Museums are an example of awe-inspiring architecture and play host to a collection of art guaranteed to take your breath away. However, they do have some rules that need to be followed regarding dress code. If you want to enjoy the renowned space in all its splendor, you will be required to adhere to certain rules and regulations per the Vatican’s consideration .

When in Rome: How to dress for a visit to the Vatican

Like any religious site around the world, the Vatican asks its visitors to respect its system of rules, and included in these rules is a specific dress code. “Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors,” reads the Vatican’s official statement . Prior to your visit to the Vatican, it’s highly recommended you consider this point, and–most importantly–whether or not you’re willing to accept the stipulations and act accordingly.

This is because the Vatican is an independent state and has the authority to impose its dress code throughout the city. As per the Vatican’s statement, this is to ensure “respect of the sacredness of the institutions.” Word to the wise; by choosing to ignore it you run the risk of being turned away.

What does “appropriately dressed” actually mean?

The Vatican makes reference to “appropriately dressed visitors,” but what does this mean exactly? Understanding the term goes a long way towards avoiding potential embarrassment or disappointment. Beginning with a Vatican decree, it’s emphasized that “low-cut or sleeveless attire, shorts, miniskirts, and hats are not permitted.” As a general guideline, ensuring your knees and shoulders remain covered serves as a reliable starting point for appropriate dress.

FAQ’s about the Vatican dress code

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the dress code you need to follow in order to be certain that you’ll be granted access to the Vatican City and you won’t have any troubles.

Can I wear a t-shirt, tank top or turtleneck to the Vatican Museums?

Tank tops, vest tops, spaghetti-strap tops, sleeveless blouses and any revealing garments are a no-go when visiting the Vatican. This is definitely harder during Summer in Italy. In the summer, you should opt for shirts, t-shirts, or sleeved blouses which cover your shoulders, and sheer blouses that keep you cool while remaining covered–but just be sure you’re dressed modestly underneath any translucent materials. Avoid any transparent or semi-transparent clothes, otherwise.

Can I wear shorts, skirts or slacks in the Vatican?

B oth men and women should opt for lightweight trousers, preferably made of linen or cotton. Jeans fit the dress code, but there’s a good chance it will be much too hot to wear them, so with that in mind, it’s worth considering the do’s and don’ts when it comes to shorts and skirts. If you decide to wear a skirt, mini skirts are a no-no, so opt for a longer style and remain cool by choosing cotton or linen fabrics. And if all else fails and the contents of your suitcase are posing problems, you can pick up a skirt or pair of trousers cheaply around Ottaviano Street, which is located just around the corner from the Vatican, or at any of the major shops closer to the center of the city.

What shoes should I wear for a tour of the Vatican?

The Vatican website doesn’t actually make reference to footwear, but that doesn’t mean you get free rein when it comes to anything and everything beneath the ankle. Like every other aspect of your wardrobe decision-making ahead of your visit to the Vatican, err on the side of caution and choose a pair of shoes which won’t draw unwanted attention. Think flat, think comfortable, and think low-key. And avoid any footwear which could be considered loud or garish. Insider’s Tip: In the summer, men and women should opt for sandals or flats, as opposed to flip-flops.

Can I wear a hat in the Vatican?

In summer, many of us tend to wear baseball caps and sun hats to protect us from the sun’s rays, while in winter we opt for woolen hats and earmuffs to keep out the chill. In the Vatican, you can (and will) be expected to remove any type of hat before gaining entry to the religious site. Just like displaying too much skin is considered disrespectful, wearing a hat indoors is deemed equally bad manners.

What other things shouldn’t I take to the Vatican City?

According to the official website , visitors are required to leave all luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, and any packages or containers considered unsuitable by staff on account of their size or nature in the cloakroom before entering the exhibition spaces. Most umbrellas, sticks (apart from those used for walking), tripods and stands for photography, and video cameras must also be left in the cloakroom.

However, one thing you should take with you is a light scarf or long-sleeved cover-all. Not only will it come in handy if you think you’re in need of a little extra cover, but it will be a welcome addition if you tend to feel the chill in vast buildings like the Vatican!

What to wear to visit the Vatican: how to get the Vatican Dress code right

All you need to know about the Vatican Dress code. A practical guide to help you decide what to wear to visit the Vatican to be appropriate in all seasons .

If you are reading this guide about what to wear to visit the Vatican, chances are you already know a Vatican dress code exists and need to figure out precisely what it entails.

St Peter basiclia at the Vatican facade with fountain in the foreground

The Vatican Dress code worries many and horror stories of people being refused entrance based on their clothing choices have probably scared you however, respecting the Vatican dress code is not as hard as you may have come to believe.

While you need to abide by it, you won’t have to buy a new wardrobe to enter the Vatican nor wear your Sunday best. You also do not need to worry about the Vatican dress code unless you are visiting some parts of the State.

This is our no-nonsense guide to what to wear at the Vatican – I hope it will help you demystify the Vatican dress code conundrum!

Table of Contents

Why a dress code for the Vatican

Before we get stuck in with clothing advice, it is good to put the Vatican Dress code in context.

Vatican City is an independent State and the seat of the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church. It is a religious state, with many scared environments, and the dress code it enforces to show respect to the sacrality of the place.

The dress code applies to all indoor areas in Vatican city and this includes St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

If you are sticking to outdoor areas such as St peter’s basilica, no dress code applies however, it is essential to be aware of the people around you.

While many will be curious tourists, many visitors to Vatican city come here for religious reasons so modest attire is to be preferred.

Good to know : the Vatican does not provide cover-ups on entering and there are no shops at the entrance to make a quick purchase. Make sure you are appropriately dressed before you get here to avoid disappointment.

What is the Vatican Dress code – what you cannot wear at the Vatican

The dress code of Vatican city calls for modest clothing, in particular(this is for men and women):

No strapless tops , spaghetti straps, tank tops, sleeveless tops that reveal shoulders and armpits

No mini-skirts (not even with tights, your knees need to be covered)

No see through clothing

No revealing necklines or barebacks

No offensive slogans on clothing or tattoos

No shape revealing outfits such as tight jumpsuits

Vatican dress code sign outside St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican

What you can wear at the Vatican

The above list of no-nos leaves a lot of room for things you can wear at the Vatican

Below the knee skirts

Long pants/ trousers – in summer, linen trousers are perfect as they keep you cool yet covered up

Sandals (see below our note about flip-flops)

What shoes to wear at the Vatican

There are no special rules about shoes at the Vatican and you can wear closed shoes or sandals.

While there is no specific rule about wearing flip flops at the Vatican, it is good practice not to.

Flip flopr are impractical for the location, often noisy and considered too casual. You may not be turned away becasue of your fliflops, but wearing is something you can get away with more than recommended attire.

Top tip : we have a handy guide about the best shoes to pack for Rome here . It includes info about wearing flip-flops in Rome and recommended alternatives.

How strict is the Vatican Dress Code: is the Vatican dress code enforced?

When it comes to enforcing the Vatican dress code, it is helpful to look at it from a couple of different perspectives:

  • What the code says.
  • What you can get away with.
  • What is the most respectful thing to do.

In terms of the rules outlines above yes, the Vatican Dress code is enforced and people regularly get turned away because they are wearing code-breaking outfits and are not appropriately dressed.

This doesn’t mean that you can never get away with a pair of shorts: I have seen girls entering St Peter’s Basilica with super short shorts and a sweater around their waist to partially cover their legs however, the fact that you can possibly get away with it doesn’t mean you should chance it.

As well as running a risk of being turned away, revealing clothing can be offensive to the people who are in Vatican City for religious reasons so dressing appropriately is a way to show respect to them and to the spirit of the place.

Is there a dress code for kids?

The Vatican dress code applies to all genders and ages but it is very lax for kids.

You wouldn’t want your kids in a swimsuit to visit the Vatican in summer but a tasteful summer dress of shorts on a toddler will pose no issues. Older tweens and teenagers should follow the rules set out for adults.

what to wear for vatican tour

When visiting the Vatican, it is important to dress appropriately to show respect for the sacred place and its religious significance. The Vatican is home to the Pope and one of the holiest sites in the Catholic Church, so it is crucial to be mindful of the dress code. In this article, we will explore what to wear for a Vatican tour to ensure a comfortable and respectful visit to this iconic destination.

When planning a trip to the Vatican, one of the most important things to consider is what to wear. As a place of religious significance, it is important to dress modestly and respectfully. This means avoiding anything too revealing or inappropriate. One popular choice for women is a knee-length dress.

A knee-length dress is a great choice for a visit to the Vatican because it strikes the perfect balance between modesty and style. It covers the knees, which is a requirement for entering many churches, and it also keeps the shoulders and chest covered. Additionally, a knee-length dress is a comfortable and practical choice for exploring the Vatican, as it allows for easy movement and is appropriate for the warm weather often experienced in Rome.

When selecting a knee-length dress for a Vatican tour, it is important to choose one that is not too tight or clingy. Instead, opt for a looser fitting dress that is made from a breathable fabric such as cotton or linen. This will ensure that you stay cool and comfortable while exploring the many wonders of the Vatican. You may also want to consider choosing a dress in a neutral color or a classic print that will be both versatile and timeless.

To complete your Vatican tour outfit, pair your knee-length dress with comfortable walking shoes or sandals. It is also a good idea to bring a light sweater or shawl to cover your shoulders if needed. Additionally, be sure to bring a small bag or purse to carry your essentials such as a camera, sunscreen, and water. With your modest knee-length dress and comfortable footwear, you'll be well-prepared for an unforgettable tour of the Vatican.

When planning to visit the Vatican, it is important to dress appropriately and respectfully. The Vatican is a religious site and as such, visitors are expected to dress modestly. This means avoiding clothing that is revealing or too casual. One suitable option for what to wear for a Vatican tour is a long-sleeve shirt with pants.

A long-sleeve shirt is a good choice for a Vatican tour because it provides coverage and is considered more modest than a short-sleeve or sleeveless shirt. Opt for a shirt that is loose fitting and made of a lightweight fabric, such as cotton, to keep cool in the summer heat. For women, a blouse or button-down shirt would be appropriate, while men could wear a collared shirt.

Pair your long-sleeve shirt with pants to complete your Vatican tour attire. Like the shirt, the pants should be modest and not revealing. Avoid wearing shorts, as they may not be allowed for entry into certain areas of the Vatican. Choose pants that are comfortable and breathable, such as linen or cotton trousers.

In addition to a long-sleeve shirt and pants, it is also a good idea to bring a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders if needed. Some areas of the Vatican, such as the Sistine Chapel, may require women to cover their shoulders and men to wear long pants. Having a scarf or shawl on hand can easily remedy this situation and ensure that you are able to fully enjoy your Vatican tour without any issues.

Overall, when deciding what to wear for a Vatican tour, a long-sleeve shirt with pants is a suitable and respectful choice. By dressing modestly and appropriately, you can ensure that your visit to the Vatican goes smoothly and that you are able to fully appreciate the historical and religious significance of this remarkable site.

Styling an Overcoat: Tips for Fashionable Outfits

When planning to visit the Vatican for a tour, it is important to dress appropriately and respectfully. As the Vatican is a religious institution, it is expected that visitors adhere to a dress code that respects the sanctity of the place. One suitable and comfortable outfit option for a Vatican tour is a collared blouse paired with a skirt.

A collared blouse adds a touch of formality to the outfit and is a good choice for a Vatican tour. Opt for a blouse that covers the shoulders and has a modest neckline. It is important to choose a blouse that is not too revealing or low-cut as this can be seen as inappropriate in a religious setting. Aim for a blouse that is comfortable and breathable, as you may be walking around for extended periods of time during your tour of the Vatican.

Pairing the collared blouse with a skirt is an elegant and appropriate choice for a Vatican tour. Opt for a skirt that falls below the knee to adhere to the modesty requirements of the dress code. A knee-length skirt is a flattering and feminine option that allows you to move comfortably during your tour. Look for a skirt with a comfortable waistband and a fabric that allows for ease of movement.

When choosing the color and pattern of your outfit, it is best to opt for a solid or subtle pattern. Avoid wearing loud or distracting prints as these can take away from the sanctity of the Vatican. Stick to classic and timeless colors such as black, navy, or neutral tones. This will ensure that your outfit remains respectful and appropriate for the surroundings.

Remember that while style is important, comfort should be a priority too. Wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking long distances. As the Vatican is quite large, it is likely that you will be on your feet for a considerable amount of time. Opt for closed-toe shoes that provide support and cushioning to ensure maximum comfort throughout your tour.

By choosing a collared blouse with a skirt, you can create an outfit that is both respectful and comfortable for your Vatican tour. Remember to dress modestly and choose colors and patterns that are appropriate for the religious setting. With the right outfit, you can enjoy your tour of the Vatican while adhering to the dress code and showing respect for the sacredness of the place.

Appropriate Attire for Funeral Visitation.

When visiting the Vatican, it is important to dress appropriately as it is a religious site and a place of respect. For men, it is recommended to wear a button-up shirt with slacks. This ensures a neat and polished look while still being comfortable for exploring the Vatican.

A button-up shirt is a timeless and classic choice that exudes sophistication and respect. Opt for a plain or subtly patterned shirt in a neutral color such as white, light blue, or pale pink. Avoid loud or distracting patterns as they can be seen as disrespectful in such a holy place. The collar of the shirt should be buttoned up all the way for a more formal appearance.

Pair your button-up shirt with a pair of slacks. Choose slacks in a neutral color such as black, navy, or gray. Make sure the slacks are tailored and fit well to give a polished and put-together look. Avoid jeans or trousers with bold prints or patterns as they can be seen as casual or unprofessional.

To complete the outfit, wear a belt that matches the color of your shoes. Opt for dress shoes such as loafers or oxfords in a neutral color. Avoid sneakers or sandals as they can be seen as too casual for the Vatican. Make sure your shoes are clean and polished to add an extra touch of professionalism to your outfit.

Remember that it is important to dress modestly and respectfully when visiting the Vatican. This means avoiding clothing that is too revealing or inappropriate. Women should also avoid wearing sleeveless tops or skirts that are above the knee. By dressing appropriately, you show respect for the religious significance of the Vatican and ensure a pleasant and respectful visit.

10 Stylish Outfit Ideas for Brown Loafers

When planning your outfit for a Vatican tour, it's important to dress modestly and respectfully. One great option for women is to wear a maxi dress with a cardigan. This combination provides both style and comfort, while also adhering to the Vatican dress code.

A maxi dress is a long, flowing dress that typically reaches the ankles. This style is perfect for the Vatican tour as it provides coverage and maintains a modest appearance. Look for a dress that is not too tight or revealing, with a print or pattern that suits your personal style. A solid color maxi dress is also a great choice, as it can easily be paired with a cardigan.

To complete your outfit, consider adding a lightweight cardigan. This is a great way to add a layer of modesty and also provides some protection from the cool air conditioning inside the Vatican. Look for a cardigan in a complementary color to your maxi dress, or opt for a neutral such as black or white. This versatile addition can easily be put on or taken off depending on the temperature.

When choosing your shoes for the Vatican tour, opt for comfortable and modest styles. A pair of flat sandals or low-heeled shoes are a practical choice for this walking tour. Avoid wearing high heels or shoes that are uncomfortable, as you will be on your feet for a significant amount of time.

Ultimately, the goal of your Vatican tour outfit is to be respectful and comfortable. A maxi dress with a cardigan strikes the perfect balance between style and modesty. By choosing this outfit combination, you can enjoy your tour while feeling confident in your appearance.

Stylish Outfit Ideas for Exploring the Big Apple

For a Vatican tour, it is important to dress modestly and respectfully. One suitable option that strikes the perfect balance between modesty and style is a midi skirt with a blouse. Midi skirts are a great choice because they provide coverage while still allowing you to feel comfortable and fashionable.

Choose a midi skirt that falls below the knee to adhere to the Vatican's dress code. Opt for a fabric that is breathable, such as cotton or linen, as you will be walking around and exploring for several hours. A subtle print or solid color is a safe choice that will ensure you look sophisticated and put together.

Pair your midi skirt with a blouse that covers your shoulders and upper arms. This is important as it shows respect for the religious nature of the Vatican. Choose a blouse that is made of a lightweight fabric, such as silk or chiffon, so that you can stay cool in the warm weather.

Accessorize your outfit with simple jewelry and comfortable shoes. A delicate necklace or a pair of stud earrings will add a touch of elegance without overpowering your look. As for footwear, opt for comfortable walking shoes or flats as you will be exploring the Vatican's vast and magnificent halls.

Overall, a midi skirt with a blouse is a versatile and stylish choice for a Vatican tour. It allows you to adhere to the dress code while still expressing your personal style. Remember to choose modest, breathable fabrics and to keep your accessories minimal. With this outfit, you will be ready to explore the Vatican in style and comfort.

Styling Tips for Moc Toe Boots: Outfit Ideas and Accessories

When planning a visit to the Vatican, it's important to consider what to wear for the tour. One comfortable and practical outfit choice is to wear capri pants with a tunic. This ensemble strikes the perfect balance between modesty, comfort, and style.

Capri pants are a great option for a Vatican tour because they are comfortable to wear, especially in the hot summer months. They are typically made from lightweight fabric and provide a good amount of coverage without being too heavy. The length of capri pants also falls just below the knee, which is an appropriate length for visiting religious sites.

Pairing capri pants with a tunic is a stylish and modest choice for a Vatican tour. Tunics are loose-fitting tops that provide ample coverage for the upper body. They are often made from breathable fabrics like linen or cotton, which are perfect for staying cool during the tour. Tunics can be plain or patterned, allowing for a variety of style options while maintaining a respectful attire suitable for religious sites.

Choosing the right footwear is also crucial when considering what to wear for a Vatican tour. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are recommended as the tour involves a lot of walking and standing. Opt for closed-toe shoes for better foot protection and to adhere to the dress code guidelines for the Vatican.

In addition to the main outfit components, it's essential to accessorize appropriately for a Vatican tour. A lightweight scarf or shawl can be handy to cover bare shoulders or as an additional layer to protect against chilly air-conditioned rooms. A crossbody bag is a practical choice for carrying essentials without hindering movement.

By wearing capri pants with a tunic, a comfortable and stylish outfit is achieved for a Vatican tour. The combination of modesty and practicality ensures visitors can fully enjoy their experience while adhering to the dress code guidelines of the Vatican.

Dressing with Elegance and Respect: What to Wear at a Celebration of Life

When planning what to wear for a Vatican tour, it is important to consider the dress code and the potential for long periods of walking. One suitable option is to wear a polo shirt with khaki shorts. This combination provides a comfortable yet appropriately modest outfit for exploring the Vatican.

A polo shirt is a classic choice for a Vatican tour because it is both comfortable and smart. It allows for free movement and breathability, which is essential when walking around the Vatican's numerous attractions. Opting for a polo shirt in a light color can also help to keep you cool in the warmer months.

Khaki shorts are a great complement to a polo shirt for a Vatican tour. They are comfortable and practical, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time walking. Khaki shorts can be easily paired with a variety of tops, making them a versatile option for your trip.

When choosing a polo shirt and khaki shorts for a Vatican tour, it is important to select modest and respectful pieces. The Vatican has a strict dress code, and visitors are expected to cover their shoulders and knees. By choosing a polo shirt with sleeves and khaki shorts that fall below the knee, you can ensure that you adhere to these guidelines.

Additionally, it is a good idea to wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for walking long distances. Sneakers or casual walking shoes are ideal for a Vatican tour, as you will likely be on your feet for extended periods of time. It is important to prioritize comfort in order to fully enjoy your experience at the Vatican.

Stylish Combinations: Outfits to Pair with a Grey T-Shirt for Men

When visiting the Vatican, it's essential to dress appropriately out of respect for the religious site. While there is no strict dress code, it's best to err on the side of caution and choose conservative and modest clothing. One option that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and style is a church-appropriate jumpsuit.

A church-appropriate jumpsuit can be a fashionable and practical choice for a Vatican tour. Opt for a jumpsuit that is made of a breathable and lightweight fabric, such as linen or cotton, to ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day. Remember that you may be doing a lot of walking and standing, so choose a jumpsuit that allows for ease of movement.

When it comes to the style of the jumpsuit, go for a modest and elegant look. Avoid plunging necklines, sheer fabrics, and anything too form-fitting. Look for jumpsuits with higher necklines, such as a boat neck or a mandarin collar, as these styles are more appropriate for visiting religious sites. It's also a good idea to choose a jumpsuit that has longer sleeves or opt for a jumpsuit with a three-quarter length sleeve.

In terms of color, it's best to stick to neutral tones or muted shades. Avoid anything too flashy or attention-grabbing. Opt for classic colors like black, navy, beige, or white. These colors not only exude elegance but also ensure you blend in with the surroundings. Remember that the focus should be on the Vatican's beautiful architecture and artwork, not your outfit.

To complete your church-appropriate jumpsuit look, pair it with comfortable and modest footwear. Opt for closed-toe shoes or sandals that cover your entire foot. Avoid wearing heels as they can be uncomfortable and make walking around the Vatican a challenge. Flat sandals or comfortable sneakers are the way to go.

Overall, a church-appropriate jumpsuit is a stylish and practical choice for a Vatican tour. By choosing a jumpsuit made of breathable fabric, with a modest neckline and longer sleeves, in neutral or muted colors, and pairing it with appropriate footwear, you'll be sure to have a comfortable and respectful outfit for your visit.

What to Wear When Visiting the Vatican

Gallery of Statues at the Vatican Museums in Rome

After 88 days of closure due to Covid restrictions, the Vatican Museums in Rome reopened on February 1.

While travel restrictions are still in place, it is not too soon to start planning and getting ready for your next Italian trip. If that includes the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, keep in mind these dress code recommendations. You may be turned away if your attire is deemed inappropriate.

As a general rule, remember that your shoulders and knees should always be covered. The Vatican Museums website states the following: “Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors.”

What does “appropriately dressed visitors” mean? It means that you will likely be denied entry if you’re wearing:

A miniskirt

Shorts above the knee

Sleeveless tops and any cleavage-revealing garments

Because many tourists visit in summer, when temperatures in Rome can reach 38°C, most walk around in shorts and sleeveless shirts or short dresses. If you want to avoid having to buy a scarf or shawl from the street vendors stationed outside San Pietro, consider that it will be wiser to wear long pants in light fabric like linen or cotton, or a long dress that covers the legs. If you opt for shorts, they should fall under your knees, Jeans are ok too, but keep those ripped jeans for another occasion.

While there is no written rule for shoes, err on the side of caution. Avoid flip flops or beach sandals and wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking; the Vatican Museums are huge, plus you may decide to climb the 551 steps that lead to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica!

Also keep in mind that hats are forbidden inside the museums and the basilica. If you wear one outside to protect you from the heat of summer, use one that you can easily place in your bag or backpack before accessing the sites.

What to Wear to the Vatican (Vatican Dress Code, Outfit Guide & Suggestions)

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

If you’re wondering what to wear to the Vatican then don’t worry because I have you covered (literally! ha). This is a pretty common Rome question and is one I recently had myself before visiting the Eternal City. After all, no one wants to be rejected from visiting one of the greatest sites in Europe just because of what they’re wearing!

What to Wear to the Vatican (Vatican Dress Code Outfit Guide & Suggestions)

if you’re planning to visit the Vatican during your time in Rome and want to see the Vatican Museums (which encompass the Sistine Chapel), then one of the most important things to note is that the tickets to visit the museums often sell out at least several days in advance.

Therefore, opt to book your Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. Check prices and availability here.

vatican city

Does Vatican City have a dress code?

Dressing for the vatican for women, dressing for the vatican for men, dressing for the vatican for children, what shoes should you wear to visit the vatican, what if you’re dressed inappropriately to visit the vatican, are bags allowed in the vatican.

Vatican City is the smallest city state in the world , and while you’ll be able to wander the square directly in front of St Peter’s Basilica at your own leisure, entering any of the complex itself is entirely up to the guards on duty.

The Vatican is considered to be one of the most holy places in Roman Catholicism and so it’s expected that visitors will dress modestly, just like with many other religious sites around the world. As a general rule of thumb, knees and shoulders should be covered at all times.

In addition to this, you’ll want to avoid ripped/ distressed clothing that shows the aforementioned areas of the body, as well as tattoos, jewellery, and other clothing that could be considered offensive or disrespectful.

Caps/ hats, etc must be removed when entering inside the buildings. To cut a long story short, the Vatican guards have the right to refuse anyone they think is dressed inappropriately and so you want to try and avoid this situation as best you can!

The basics for dressing for the Vatican are pretty simple: your shoulders and knees must be covered, as should your tummy (so if you wear a crop top make sure to bring a sweater to wear over it or alternatively wear high enough skirt/ trousers that your midriff is not exposed).

To be on the safe side, I would probably opt to stay away from dresses and skirts with slits in them. You should also note that low cut tops showing cleavage are a no-no but if you are wearing one then you can bring a scarf/ pashmina to cover your chest area during your visit (which is usually what I do while it’s warm in the sumer).

If you’re wearing a skirt, you’ll want to make sure it covers your knees, and the same goes for trousers. I personally wore a lightweight linen maxi dress to visit and covered my shoulders by using a t-shirt I had in my backpack. If you’re wearing a sleeveless dress in Italy, I recommend always bringing along a T-shirt so that you can enter religious buildings as you’re exploring!

maxi dress

The dress code for men is pretty similar to that of women, in that you shouldn’t have your shoulders or knees exposed. To be on the safe side, my husband opted to wear long trousers that day and paired it with a regular plain white T-shirt.

You can also opt to wear a shirt or polo shirt if you would prefer to dress more formally. While on the subject of trousers, while plain jeans and trousers are acceptable, tracksuits are generally frowned upon and so should be avoided.

There is no specific dress code for dressing for the Vatican for children, though they are typically expected to follow the same rules as adults. Just make sure that shorts/ skirts aren’t too short and that their shoulders are not visible.

There are no specific rules but it’s frowned upon to wear flip flops in the Vatican and you may be refused entry. You’ll want to avoid heels because the cobblestones of Italy can be pretty difficult to navigate, and besides you should be prepared to walk a fair amount when exploring Vatican City.

I personally opt to wear some smart white trainers/ sneakers when out and about exploring Italy. Sometimes I’ll wear smart sandals, but only on the days where I won’t be walking too much.

Not only do smart sneakers pair together with the majority of my summer dresses, but I can easily clock up over 30,000 steps when exploring the streets of Rome and so they’re comfortable too!

If you are wearing short shorts, a mini skirt, spaghetti straps etc, then fear not as all is not lost. On site, it’s possible to buy a poncho to cover up in order to visit the Vatican.

You may look a little silly and it’s not the most comfortable attire, but at least you’ll get to visit one of the best attractions that Italy has to offer!

Small backpacks and handbags are allowed inside the Vatican. However, larger backpacks and suitcases are not allowed due to security issues/ the risk of damaging artwork.

Therefore you should arrange ahead of time to store your bags somewhere safely such as at your accommodation or using a dedicated service (I personally use Luggage Hero). Another option is to use the cloakroom at the Vatican Museums which are free of charge but are pretty far away from the exit of the museums.

What to Pack for the Vatican: Dress Code, Tips and Suggestions

What to Pack for the Vatican: Dress Code, Tips and Suggestions

“Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors,” says the Vatican official statement.

Vatican City follows a rigid dress code. Like any other religious sites in the world, the Vatican authorities expect its visitors to respect its system of rules and regulations. The Vatican is the official seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Thereby, we recommend adhering to the ancient institution’s stipulations when visiting or touring the Vatican.

‘Appropriately Dressed’: Decoding the Term

Sleeveless clothing, low-cut dresses, miniskirts, shorts above the knees and hats (on men) are not allowed within the ‘holy and sacred’ areas of the Vatican City.

The Vatican museum tour

Whether you are heading to the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica or any of the other small churches or chapels in the Holy See you need to follow the dress code. The key is to cover your shoulders, balls of the knees and stomachs, and this applies to both men and women.

What to Wear?

Sleeved blouses and t-shirts.

Vest tops, tank tops, spaghetti-strapped tops or any revealing garments are an absolute no-no when visiting the Holy See.

So, what to wear during the summer months?

Without exposing your cleavage or shoulders, you can try T-shirts, shirts and sleeved blouses. You can even opt for sheer blouses; they keep you cool while being covered.

The wise word is ‘dress modestly’, especially when you are wearing translucent materials.

Many women (and sometimes men) will bring a shawl to throw over their shoulders when entering the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. A shawl will allow visitors to wear non-sleeved tops where possible, yet have the ability to cover up quickly when needed.

Vatican Tours

In winter, you naturally tend to cover yourself up, hence no worries.

Linen or Cotton Skirts and Trousers

Fret not; though there are restrictions on clothing, you can still stay cool and savour the religious masterpieces of the Vatican. For that, during the summer months we suggest lightweight trousers or ¾ pants made of cotton or linen. This will allow air to flow through your clothing in the often crowded and hot Vatican Museums.

Jeans are allowed in the Vatican but they are not recommended in the summer months as the heavy material can make you sweat and feel uncomfortable. Therefore, skirts are a good idea but stay away from miniskirts or anything that ends above the knees.

If you do choose to wear shorts, it is very important that the cloth falls below the ball of the knees. In recent years we have seen visitors bringing zip on pants which can easily be attached when entering holy places within the Vatican.

If you arrive to the Vatican without the appropriate clothing not to worry as the many local vendors surrounding the Vatican walls do sell shawls, t-shirts and even light-weight painters pants to help you cover up before entering.

Shoes for Vatican City Tours

Shoe types are not explicitly mentioned in the Vatican dress code however you do need shoes to enter the Vatican. Open toed shoes or sandals are allowed but we stress that your footwear should be comfortable as you will be on your feet the majority of the time when visiting the Vatican. Due to lack of support we suggest staying away from flip-flops and heels. Don’t try to be fashionable, leave your stilettos at the hotel and wear sneakers, your feet will thank you for it at the end of the day. Flat shoes are highly recommended for tours of the Vatican .

Tips and Suggestions

  • When visiting the Holy See, if possible, do not bring your suitcases, luggage, medium and large backpacks or any other large containers with you to the Vatican. On account of their sheer size, the Vatican staff will not allow these items inside the exhibition spaces. The same is applicable for large tripods, non-collapsible umbrellas, laptops, glass bottles and containers as well as pocket knives. If you have any of these items with you, you will be asked to check your belongings into the Vatican clock room and baggage deposit. The deposit is safe and free of charge however we suggest avoiding this process when possible as you will have to return to the entrance of the Vatican Museums to collect your items at the end of your visit. If you are to join a tour of the Vatican then the tour will finish at St. Peter’s Basilica which is roughly a 25-30min walk from the entrance of the Vatican Museums and baggage deposit.
  • Small backpacks and purses are allowed in the Vatican however we suggest that you put only essentials in the bag. For example, a bottle of water, camera, a light scarf, cardigan or wind breaker. They may come in handy inside the vast Vatican hallways.
  • Bottled water is highly recommended when visiting the Vatican as there are limited places to buy water or find drinking fountains. As long as your bottled container is not made from glass, and has a resealable lid, you are able to bring it with you when visiting the Vatican.

Vatican Tours

Tips and Suggestions when visiting the Vatican with children.

  • Snacks in the Vatican . When visiting the Vatican you will be on your feet the majority of the time so you may need to refuel your body with food and sugars, especially if you have children and are touring the Vatican with your family. The Vatican does have a small cafe bar towards the end of the Vatican Museums which offers sandwiches, snacks (cookies, granola bars, etc.) as well as water, coffee, juice, sodas, even beer and wine. If you are travelling on a budget, or just like to be prepared then it is possible to bring your own snacks into the Vatican. However, the snacks must be sealed in some sort of bag or container  (ziplock or store bought) and can only be eaten within certain areas of the Vatican. Do not sit down in the Sistine Chapel and take out your bag of trail mix, this is highly frowned upon and will most likely result in expulsion. Generally, it is allowed to eat or snack in any of the outdoor areas of the Vatican however it is important to be respectful of your surroundings and to dispose of any packing or left over food appropriately in a nearby trash can.  To be on the safe side, we suggest asking the approval from a Vatican guard or your tour guide before having a snack.
  • Strollers and prams are also permitted in the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and are highly recommended as it will be the best way for your family to tour the Vatican with young children. Visiting the Vatican can often be exhausting for adults, yet alone children so if you are bringing your stroller to Italy, then bring it with you to the Vatican as well. When entering St. Peter’s Basilica, strollers and prams are not permitted however there is a specially designated area where you can leave your stroller when visiting the Basilica. With all of this said, double and tandem strollers are not allowed as they occupy too much space.

We hope that this article will help you prepare for your time at the Vatican. For more such interesting updates, follow us on Vatican Tours and sign up for the Vatican museum tour today.

When visitors talk about visiting the Vatican, they’re most commonly referring to visiting the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, but visiting Vatican City can easily extend beyond those popular sights.

Here are the parts of Vatican City to consider when planning your visit, from the incredibly popular to the fairly niche.

St. Peter’s Square

St. Peter’s Square is the easiest part of the Vatican to visit–you can simply walk in and admire the beautiful oval square and exterior of St. Peter’s Basilica without any advance planning.

The Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums are home to some of the most incredible works of art in the entire world, including Raphael’s most famous frescoes and the Sistine Chapel.

You will need a ticket or tour to visit, and when people talk about how long the lines are to get into the Vatican, they’re most commonly referring to the lines for the museums–we’ll cover more on that in the next section of this Vatican City blog post.

Two tickets for the Vatican Museums being held up in front of a colorful wall--pre-booking these tickets is one of the most important Vatican travel tips

The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel, with its magnificent ceiling painted by Michelangelo, is one of the most well-known houses of worship on the planet.

It is accessed through the Vatican Museums and cannot be visited separately.

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church on the planet, and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture (Michelangelo and Bernini both contributed to its design).

It is free to visit, but you will need to pass through a security checkpoint to enter, and the lines for that can get very long.

You can also visit the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica (unlike visiting the basilica itself, climbing the dome does require a ticket–more on that below), and from there you can admire incredible views of St. Peter’s Square.

2 Days in Rome Itinerary: Interior of St. Peter's Basilica

Vatican Necropolis

The Vatican Necropolis (or “scavi”) lies below St. Peter’s Basilica–and even below the “grotto” area that is also under St. Peter’s Basilica.

This area was a cemetery dating back to the first century, and, most importantly to Christian history, it is the presumed resting place of St. Peter himself.

Tours are required and absolutely must be booked in advance. If you’d like to tour directly with the Vatican, there are directions for how to email them (yep, it’s done by email!) here .

Alternatively, this well-reviewed tour will allow you to visit the Vatican Necropolis and is much more straightforward to arrange.

The Vatican Gardens

The Vatican Gardens are beautiful and exclusive–only a handful of reservations are accepted per day (so like the Necropolis, you absolutely must plan ahead), and therefore they are never crowded.

Like the Vatican Necropolis, the Vatican Gardens must be visited as part of a tour like this .

The Vatican Museums house the largest private art collection in the world–and despite the enormous amount of art and historical artifacts displayed, only the tiniest sliver of the complete collection is on display to the public!

Beautiful, overwhelming, and one of the most highly sought-after art museums in the world, visiting the Vatican Museums can be a bit of an intense experience.

Here’s what to know before you go.

2 Days in Rome: Vatican Museums Statue

Don’t rush to the Sistine Chapel.

I know on our first visit to the Vatican Museums, we were highly anticipating the Sistine Chapel and always hoping it was coming up soon… but it’s one of the last things you see, so be sure to appreciate everything along the way!

Plan to spend at least two hours in the museums.

Three is even better, but it is hard to visit the Vatican Museums in less than two hours without simply making a beeline for the Sistine Chapel and not paying attention to much else.

Once you add in time to get there, security checks, potentially waiting in line, and maybe visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square, it’s best to consider visiting the Vatican at least a half-day commitment if you’re going to be touring the museums.

Large basin as seen when visiting the Vatican Museums, housed underneath a dome. Walls in the background are painted red.

Strongly consider booking a guided tour.

Guided tours add so much context to a Vatican Museums visit, and offer the opportunity to learn so much about the history of the art in the museums. They also make visiting the Vatican far less stressful from start to finish.

We’ve visited the Vatican Museums both independently and with a guided tour, and after experiencing both, strongly recommend a tour.

This is the tour we took and loved, and this is another great option .

That’s completely understandable. In that case, we recommend booking skip-the-line tickets (ideally these early-access ones , but skip-the-line tickets for the normal operating hours are very helpful as well).

I’m not exaggerating when I say that the lines to access the Vatican Museums are the worst we have ever seen at any museum in the world.

During one of our longer trips to Rome, we stayed just beyond the Vatican Museums for a solid month and walked past the line for the museums almost every day–and as mid-October turned into mid-November, the lines remained incredibly overwhelming.

Grab your first-access skip-the-line tickets or general admission skip-the-line tickets for the Vatican Museums now!

Crowds of tourists visiting the Vatican Museums in Rome, lined up around a barricade

Keep in mind alternative hours.

The typical opening hours for the Vatican Museums are Monday – Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (with the last entry at 4:00 PM).

However, there are a few ways to access the Vatican Museums outside these hours if you’d like to mix up your visit!

Early Morning VIP Entry

With early-morning entry, either via pre-booked tickets for an independent visit or via a tour, you can enter the Vatican Museums as early as 7:30 AM, therefore avoiding the worst of the crowds (and during warm weather, the worst of the heat).

This incredibly popular tour a tried-and-true early morning option for touring the Vatican Museums!

Friday Nights Between April and October

For seven months out of the year, the Vatican Museums are open on Friday nights until 11:00 PM (last entry at 9:30 PM), and we can personally attest that visiting the Vatican Museums at night is an incredible experience (and far less crowded than general entry hours).

We took this amazing tour on a Friday night and loved it!

Last Sunday of the Month

The Vatican Museums are typically (and unsurprisingly) closed on Sundays, but on the last Sunday of the month, the museums are open until 2:00 PM (last entry at 12:30 PM).

Like many free museum days around the world, the general rule of thumb with visiting the Vatican Museums on a free Sunday is that it’s a great option for those on a strict budget, and a terrible one for those who want to avoid extremely heavy crowds.

Make sure to follow the dress code!

There is a dress code for visiting the Vatican Museums. Essentially, no shorts, no bare shoulders, no cleavage, and no hats.

In our experience, this is most strongly enforced in the Sistine Chapel, but as a gesture of respect and to avoid the risk of being denied entry, you should absolutely follow the Vatican Museums’ dress code.

We recommend light, loose clothing that will allow you to stay both covered and   cool, because the museums can get very warm.

With limited exceptions, there is no air-conditioning in the museums.

Only a few rooms are air-conditioned, so as you can imagine, during Rome’s hot summer months it can be a bit blistering inside the Vatican Museums.

Avoiding the heat (which is, of course, made even worse due to the heavy crowds that are normally visiting the Vatican) is another good reason to book an early morning or Friday night Vatican tour–not only will there be fewer crowds, the museums will be much cooler!

Statue that inspired The Thinker displayed in the Vatican, with tourists visible in the background.

Don’t take photos in the Sistine Chapel.

Despite this being obviously and clearly banned, complete with repeated announcements every few minutes from the security officers and strict enforcement, you’ll still see people trying to snap photos of the Sistine Chapel. Don’t be one of them!

The photos of the Sistine Chapel I’ve used in this Vatican blog post are stock photos for that reason.

Don’t plan to eat at the Vatican Museums if possible.

There is a cafeteria inside the museums selling basic meals and snacks if you get hungry, but with so much incredible food to eat in Rome, it’s best to plan your meals for before or after your Vatican Museums visit if at all possible.

You won’t see the famous spiral staircase isn’t until the very end of your visit.

It’s one of the absolute last things you’ll see in the Vatican Museums–even after the Sistine Chapel–so don’t expect to see it early on!

2 Days in Rome: Vatican Museums Spiral Staircase

Yes, absolutely!

We think the Vatican Museums are one of the best places to splurge on a tour in Rome–even more than at the Colosseum.

The context gained is incredible, and having a tour guide also makes visiting the enormous museums much less stressful and overwhelming.

We’ve visited the Vatican both independently and with a tour, and absolutely preferred our visit with a tour.

We took this Friday evening tour and loved it, but this tour is another phenomenal option.

Sprawling and stunning, St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world and an absolute must-see sight when visiting the Vatican.

You do not need a ticket to enter St. Peter’s Basilica–it is completely free to visit!

… but you do have to go through a security line first.

This line follows the curve of St. Peter’s Square and tends to grow throughout the day, and is in place for security. You’ll pass through a metal detector and have your bags checked when you reach the front.

The line can get excruciatingly long–if you’re not visiting St. Peter’s Basilica as part of a longer tour, we recommend arriving either very early in the morning (it opens at 7:00 AM every day except Wednesday) or in the early evening–the crowds often start to die off a couple hours before closing (6:00 PM or 7:00 PM depending on the time of year).

You should absolutely visit the dome.

The view overlooking St. Peter’s Square from the cupola is one of our favorite views in all of Rome–and the views of the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica from above are pretty phenomenal, too.

We absolutely recommend climbing the dome when visiting St. Peter’s Basilica unless 1) you have difficulty climbing large amounts of stairs (you must climb a minimum of 320 steps to access the dome), or 2) you’re uncomfortable in tight spaces–there are some very closed-in areas on the way up.

You can buy tickets inside St. Peter’s Basilica, and they’re currently 10 Euro for a ticket that involves a partial elevator ride, or 8 Euro if you’re willing to climb all 551 steps (the elevator ticket lets you bypass 200 or so steps).

The biggest benefit to the cheaper ticket, though, is not the lower price but the fact that it normally has a much shorter line than the elevator option!

Piazzas in Rome: Piazza San Pietro

Vatican City is located in the heart of Rome and is easily accessed by either foot, metro, or bus.

Keep in mind that unless you’re on a special tour that gives you a workaround (more on that in the FAQ section), it’s a 15-minute walk around the edge of the Vatican from St. Peter’s Square to the entrance to the Vatican Museums.

St. Peter’s Square is closer to Centro Storico, so if you’re approaching by foot, you’ll likely come across it first.

We absolutely love walking through Rome, and one of our favorite walks winds from Centro Storico all the way to St. Peter’s Square–in other words, the Vatican is absolutely accessible by foot!

For example, St. Peter’s Square is a 35-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and a 25-minute walk from the Pantheon.

Those times might sound long, but in addition to all the general beauty of Centro Storico, you’ll find some interesting highlights along the way such as Piazza Navona and Castel Sant’Angelo.

From St. Peter’s Square, it’s another 15 minutes by foot to the entrance to the Vatican Museums.

View of part of the castle and St. Peter's Basilica from Castel Sant'Angelo, one of the best views in Rome Italy

There are two metro stops close-ish to the Vatican: Ottaviano and Cipro, which are each a short walk from the Vatican Museums entrance.

There are several bus lines that stop near Vatican City, with the most frequent being 40 and 64.

Have more questions about visiting the Vatican?

Here are the answers to some of the most common Vatican City FAQs!

Can you reach St. Peter’s Basilica from inside the Vatican Museums?

Yes… but only on a tour.

There is a semi-infamous door between the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica links the two together and makes it possible to go right from the museums into the basilica without taking a (long) walk and waiting in line again, but independent visitors cannot use it.

Some guided tours, though, like this one , do give you the opportunity to use this door.

Otherwise, you’ll need to wait in line to enter St. Peter’s .

What is the Vatican City dress code?

When in the Vatican Museums, Vatican Gardens, St. Peter’s Basilica, or Sistine Chapel, you’ll want to avoid wearing anything sleeveless, any shorts, or showing cleavage.

Hats are also not allowed.

If you’re just visiting St. Peter’s Square, you don’t need to subscribe to the dress code.

You can see the official language of the dress code here .

Lines of people visiting the Vatican Museums climbing a spiral staircase to reach the exhibits

Is Vatican City a country?

Yes, it is–it’s the smallest country in the world, covering only 0.2 miles of land area.

It’s also one of the only absolute monarchies in the world, with the Pope ruling it both as the Pope (overseeing The Holy See, aka the Catholic Church), and the King (overseeing the country of Vatican City).

Vatican City is not part of the UN, but The Holy See (aka the Catholic Church) is a permanent observer of the UN.

Do you need your passport to enter the Vatican?

Even though it is a country, there’s no need to bring your passport when visiting the Vatican.

Can you visit Vatican City for free?

If your goal is only to step inside the country of Vatican City, you can enter St. Peter’s Square (for free, and without waiting in line) and St. Peter’s Basilica (for free, but after waiting in line) to pay a quick visit to the country.

Can you get a Vatican City passport stamp?

No, Vatican City doesn’t offer passport stamps.

However, you can buy a postcard in the gift shop and mail it home from Vatican City!

It will be processed through the Vatican’s mail system, and many people use it as a unique souvenir from their visit to the Vatican in lieu of a stamp.

Can you see the Pope when visiting the Vatican?

We covered this a bit above, but essentially, every Wednesday morning that the Pope is in Vatican City, he’ll give an audience in St. Peter’s Square.

2 Days in Rome: St. Peter's Square

Can you just visit the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City?

No, you can’t.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the final stops when touring the Vatican Museums and can’t be seen without visiting the museums.

Is St. Peter’s Basilica part of the Vatican Museums?

No, it’s not.

You can visit St. Peter’s Basilica separately from the museums.

4 Day Rome Itinerary: view of St. Peter's Basilica

Should you visit the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica on the same day?

You can, but be prepared for a long day, as you’ll have to enter both areas separately… unless you book a tour that includes both the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, that is.

In that case, you’ll be able to seamlessly visit both without exiting the Vatican Museums and waiting in an additional line to access St. Peter’s Basilica.

This tour is a popular option that includes both!

It's All About Italy

The Vatican

How to Dress to Visit the Vatican

It’s no mystery that Italy is a very fashion-conscious country. In a previous article we gave you advice on how to dress appropriately when visiting Italy during summer, but this time we want to be more specific about choosing the perfect attire for the Vatican.

When visiting the Vatican, you have to think of it like a very exclusive club : to be sure to get in, you need to be dressed right! Find out the most appropriate dress code for this special location and you will not be turned away at the entrance.

The Vatican

The appropriate dress code for visiting the Vatican

The Vatican is a world famous historical and religious complex in the heart of Rome, including the Vatican Museums, The Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Gardens and St. Peter’s Basilica . It holds extreme significance for the global Christian community and is visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims each year, the majority of them choosing summertime to travel. However, during the warm summer months many of them are turned away at the entrance because their dress code does not comply with the rigorous Vatican regulations in terms of appropriate clothing.

Let’s not shy away from it: summer in Italy can be blazing hot, and if you’re going to Rome in June, July or August you’d probably do anything to stay cool. Dressing properly to visit sacred sites can be challenging under these circumstances, but there is a way to keep cool and also be granted access to some of Italy’s most famous and enchanting attractions.

So how do you dress to impress at the Vatican?

Here are  8  tips for both men and women when visiting the Vatican – and still manage to survive the heat! Before we start, bear in mind this rule of thumb: when visiting any Christian site in general, (and the Vatican in particular!) showing off too much of your arms, cleavage, back and legs skin can be considered disrespectful . You may find churches in Italy that have a more relaxed attitude to summer attire, but we don’t recommend that you take chances – especially if you have been waiting a long time in line to get in, it could be very disappointing to be refused access!

Here is what you should and should not wear when visiting the Vatican:

  • Avoid any top that is sleeveless : a blouse, a short-sleeved shirt or T-shirt will do just fine;
  • Avoid graphics, slogans or patterns on your clothes that may be unsuitable or offensive to the spirit of the sacred place you’re touring;
  • Sheer fabrics and transparencies that are too revealing are not ideal;
  • Cropped tops showing off your belly are definitely a bad outfit choice;
  • Wear trousers, jeans, dresses or skirts that are knee-length . Alternatively, consider taking with you leggings, tights or a scarf to wrap around your waist to cover up your legs;
  • Wear shoes! Sandals are fine, but flip flops are considered too relaxed as footwear to enter the Vatican;
  • If you’re wearing a hat or a cap, you’ll have to remove it once you’re inside the building;
  • Basilicas and museums can be chilly even in summer: bring a scarf or a pashmina with you . Not only it’ll be useful if worn around bare shoulders or legs, but you’ll avoid unpleasant temperature changes when going inside the buildings.

Have you been to the Vatican already? If so, tell us what you wore and share your tips with other readers!

Vatican City Dress Code – What to Wear When Visiting

Being informed about and respecting the Vatican City dress code is an “essential” that any would-be tourists must take into account before visiting this breathtaking part of Europe.

Millions of people visit the Vatican every year but some are turned away because of what they are wearing! Even though it is a major tourist attraction for people of all backgrounds, Vatican City, including St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Vatican Museums, is also a major holy site for the Catholic religion.

As such, it is important to think about what to wear to the Vatican, or to any church in Italy, for that matter. So let’s look at Vatican City dress code a little deeper.

vatican city dress code

Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors. For women, low cut or sleeveless clothing, shorts, miniskirts are not permitted. Men wearing hats are not allowed.

As a guide, you could think about it this way – the dress code for visiting the Vatican is the same that applies when you visit any church in Italy. What to wear at the Vatican? The absolute minimum required for both males and females who want to visit Vatican City and join the Vatican Museums guided tours is covering both your knees and shoulders.

Vatican Dress Code in the Summer Months

vatican city dress code

Here are a few ideas on what to wear to the Vatican in the summer heat.

Just be mindful of low necklines, sheer fabrics, and clothing that’s overly tight fitting in certain places. They’re very big on modesty there.

Can you Wear Leggings to the Vatican?

Opinions vary as to whether tights or leggings come within the category of “long pants” or more ‘revealing’ attire, when it comes to the Vatican City dress code. There are reports that some have not been allowed to enter while wearing leggings, so if you want to take that chance, it’s up to you. If you wear them under a dress then they probably won’t even look sideways.

Like with many of these “rules” it may all depend on who is keeping the gate and what their own interpretation of modesty is. There is no specific written rule that says that you can’t wear them, but why bother with the potential inconvenience, so when deciding upon your Vatican City outfits, keep this in mind.

A practical guide on how to dress for the Vatican

A practical guide on how to dress when visiting the vatican museums and st. peter’s basilica., what are the rules, be prepared  , dress code for the vatican  .

For women, I recommend keeping a shawl and a pair of leggings in your purse if you are visiting in warm months. Quickly pull the leggings on under a dress and throw the shawl over your arms. In the winter, one of those lightweight jackets that can roll up into a satisfyingly small bundle to place in your backpack, will make it easier to move around the crowded corridors of the museums. Men should wear comfortable pants and shirts that cover their shoulders to be sure that they are admitted to one of the most beautiful sites in Rome.

Here are some answers to some of the most frequently askes questions:

1. are t-shirts, turtlenecks, and tank tops allowed, 2. what to wear while at the vatican during the summer.

Take care of what goes into your suitcase. For instance, lightweight trousers made from linen or cotton are perfect and meet the Vatican dress code standards.

The all-weather all-environment jeans work too, but you might want to take precautions when it comes to wearing shirts and shorts. A skirt can do fine but a mini skirt is an absolute no-no. If you had to make an impromptu visit to the Vatican but lack the right attire, purchase a pair of cheap trousers or a skirt .

3. What should I wear on my feet when heading to the Vatican?

If it were up to me, I would recommend something flat, and silent. During summer, sandals and flats are acceptable rather than flip flops.

4. What about wearing a hat?

5. what men should observe about the vatican dress code.

Useful information for visitors

Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors. Sleeveless and / or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. The requirement of decorum extends also to any visible personal objects as well as similarly visible distinctive personal signs (such as, for example, tattoos) that may offend Catholic morality, the Catholic religion and common decency.

Luggage, bags and rucksacks

Before entering the exhibition spaces, visitors are required to leave in the cloakroom all luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, packages and containers not considered suitable by staff on account of their size or nature. Vatican Dress Code: A What to Wear Guide

Vatican Dress Code: A What to Wear Guide

If you are heading to Rome chances are that visiting the Vatican is on your Rome Bucket List and you really can dedicate a whole day in your Rome itinerary to exploring the Vatican Museums, St Peters Basilica and the surrounding area. But is there a Vatican Dress Code? In this post we will guide you through what to wear to the Vatican and more importantly what not to wear!

Table of Contents

Vatican Dress Code: What NOT To Wear to the Vatican

Vatican Dress Code: What to Wear to the Vatican for Women, Men and Children

There is a strict dress code for visiting the Vatican which includes if you are visiting the Vatican Museums and St Peters Basilica.

The Vatican Dress Code means that you can’t wear:

  • Sleeveless tops, shirts and blouses
  • Low Cut and Revealing Tops
  • Shorts
  • Hats  – these are fine for the queue but you will be asked to remove them when entering the buildings.

This Vatican Dress Code is applicable to both men and women so do be sure to dress appropriately whatever part of the Vatican you are heading to otherwise you will not be granted entry even with Skip the Line Tickets.

Top Tip : We recommend buying your tickets online in advance (skip the line type) as the queues for the Vatican can get very very long especially if you are visiting Rome in the summer or even on a rainy day in Rome . Click here to buy your tickets online in advance .

Although not explicitly stated anywhere it is respectful and prudent to also avoid wearing t-shirts with graphics or slogans that would be offensive to the holy place you are in.

What to Wear in to the Vatican

What to Wear to the Vatican - Vatican Dress Code

So now you know what not to wear to the Vatican now we turn our attention to what to wear. As I mentioned above the Vatican dress code applies to both men and women but for our what to wear I have split those down into categories for men, women and children visiting the Vatican .

Vatican dress code for women

As your arms, chest and knees need to be covered one of the best things to wear that adheres to the Vatican Dress code for women is a chino and blouse combination. I recommend choosing light weight (But not see through) fabric for both of these items especially if you are visiting the Vatican in the summer time.

vatican tour clothing

Another of my favourite wardrobe go to pieces when I am travelling to Italy and the Vatican in particular is a long sleeved maxi dress or a maxi skirt paired with a long sleeved top.. Just be sure to make sure any skirt you have does not have a large split that could reveal your knee.

vatican tour clothing

If you opt for a maxi dress or top that has a strappy sleeve then you are required to cover up so remember to pack a cardigan or a pashmina to go over the top. I always try and wear long sleeves rather than scrappy top personally because I always worry that I will forget my pashmina or scarf at last minute.

vatican tour clothing

A good general tip for visiting Rome especially if you are going into to churches however is to always leave a pashmina in your bag that way you always have an option of an extra covering if required. They are also really handy as even in summer it is surprising how cool the St Peters Basilica can be.

Vatican dress code for men

Both my husband and I are jeans and t shirt people especially when we are travelling but for some reason whenever we go to the Vatican we always seems to dress up a bit more. I don’t know why it’s not that jeans are not allowed but as always in Italy you are surrounded by well dressed people so we usually opt for something slightly fancier ourselves.

vatican tour clothing

When my husband visits the Vatican he too tends to opt for Chinos and a smart button down shirt that has the option of rolling up the sleeves.

What to wear in the Vatican for kids

The Vatican Museum Website is not explicit about its dress code requirements for children. Last time we visited the Vatican with our little one it was in Winter so we had no concerns about adhering to the dress code. I personally always dress my little one to the adult dress code whenever we visiting religious sites.

For more information on visiting the Vatican with kids check out this post.

What Shoes Should you Wear to the Vatican City

One of the most frequently asked questions I see about visiting the Vatican City is in relation to footwear.

Can you wear flip flops in the Vatican?

In answer to “Can you wear flip flops in the Vatican” and the answer is unclear. It is meant to be too informal to wear flip flops to the Vatican although I haven’t seen this specifically stated by the vatican website as this tends to only deal with clothing clothing. However I would strongly advise against wearing flip flops anyway as there is a LOT of walking involved if you are visiting the Vatican Museums, Basilica and Gardens and flip flops are just not good for the amount of walking you all be doing.

I would advise you wear sandals with good arch support and that are very comfy or a trainer or walking shoe. Whenever I am in Rome and especially at the Vatican I always carry plasters with me in case my shoes rub with all the walking especially if your feet are prone to swell in the summer heat.

What to wear to the Vatican in Summer

Vatican Dress Code: What to Wear to the Vatican for Women, Men and Children

I have been lucky enough to visit Rome in Winte r and summer and I can definitely say that I found it easier to stick to the Vatican dress code in the Winter as you need your layers in Rome in Winter. In summer on the other hand, especially if you are visiting Rome in August it can get unbearably hot. All you want to wear in Rome in the summer is shorts and a strappy top but this does not adhere to the Vatican Dress code.

If you are visiting and wondering what to wear to the Vatican in the summer I advise sticking to loose clothing that are made of breathable fabrics. Stick to cottons and linens for your clothes and be sure to avoid all man made fabrics that make you sweat.

Dresses and skirts are another good option so long as your knees and shoulders are covered. Be sure that any dress or skirt does not have a slit that reveals the knee or above.

And although the weather in Rome in summer is very hot the Basilica of St Peter can actually can be quite cool even in the summer so be sure to pack a pashmina or cardigan as you may get chilly in there.

Other FAQs about what to Wear Visiting the Vatican

Visiting Rome in the Winter Itinerary - Best Things to do in Rome in Winter

Can you wear ripped jeans to Vatican?

The answer to this is that it really depends on the rips. If there are rips that expose your knees or your thighs then these are a big no no. To be on the safe side I would avoid ripped jeans.

Can you wear skinny jeans to the Vatican?

Again the answer to can you wear skinny jeans to the Vatican is a grey area. There is nothing specific in the Vatican Dress Code that prohibits skinny jeans but I always try to err on the more conservative side when visiting religious sites anywhere in the world.

Do you have to wear pants to the Vatican?

You do not have to wear pants to the Vatican (I mean pants in the American sense of the word! You definitely should be wearing underwear to the Vatican). So long as your knees and above are completely covered you can wear a dress or skirt instead of pants. If you do opt for a dress or skirt however be sure there are no slits that are revealing of your leg.

How strict is the dress code at the Vatican?

The answer is strict. The Vatican Dress code is strictly enforced. But if you forget something there are lots of shops around where you can buy shawls and ponchos. It wis harder to find things to cover your legs than shoulders in this area though so I would be sure to check your outfit before you leave for the Vatican to make sure it adheres to all the Vatican Clothing rules.

Do your knees need to be covered at the Vatican?

Ues your needs need to be covered at the Vatican at all times. Be aware any slits in skirts or dreseses or on ripped jeans which may accidentally break the Vatican dress code rules as you will be turned away.

Do you have to cover your head in the Vatican?

There seems to be a lot of confusion over whether you have to cover your heard in the Vatican but for the regular visitor the answer is definitely no. In fact if you are wearing a hat you will have to remove these to enter any of the Vatican Buildings.

History of Vatican Dress Code

The Vatican City dress code mirrors that of a general dress code for Roman Catholic churches that has existed for centuries. Since the 1970s, the application of a dress code – particularly for women – has relaxed in most instances.

But for the Vatican City, the basic guidelines – centred on modesty for both men and women – have prevailed.

Today’s dress code for the Vatican in Rome Italy

Dress code in Vatican City

You might be disappointed to queue for hours and hours to get into some of the Vatican City attractions, and then turned away. Unfortunately, we have seen this happening on occasion, especially in the height of summer.

Stick to these general rules and you won’t run the risk of ruining your trip:

  • Bare knees – for both men and women – are a no-no
  • Same goes for bare shoulders
  • Hats or caps will need to be removed
  • Belly crop tops – no way!

On top of these rules, which are enforced by Vatican staff on entry to the buildings, you may want to do the following:

  • Avoid wearing slogans that could offend, pictures of skulls for example, or anti-religious attire
  • Flip flops are perhaps too casual for the surroundings
  • Ripped T-Shirts or Jeans
  • See-through clothing

The above, whilst not strictly prohibited, might cause offence. Depending on the guard enforcing the Vatican dress code on the day, you might be refused entry.

A quick look at Free guide of Rome on your mobile

Vatican city dress code women for all occasions.

The Vatican city applies its rules for modesty equally to men and women. But there are some particular instances when women have additional dress code requirements. One would be if you are meeting the Pope! If you look at pictures of Queen Elizabeth II meeting the Pope through the ages, you’d be forgiven for thinking she was at a funeral. Why was she always dressed in black?

Black dress when meeting the Pope is a sign of modesty and piety. This is adhered to by non-catholic Monarchs, princesses and the like. But don’t be surprised if you see a female member of a European Royal Family meeting the Pope dressed in white either! There exists an interesting protocol – known as the Privilege du Blanc (privilege of white) – whereby certain catholic royals are allowed to wear white.

Stylish & Casual mens dress code for Vatican

Traditional Vatican City dress code

In the hot summer months, it can be tough in Rome. The dress code for the Vatican City can make it even more difficult. For ladies at least, a long light summer dress will bring some comfort. But for men, it can be particularly tough if they can’t wear shorts.

You could pack a light pair of linen trousers in a bag and put them on before entering, so that you can wear shorts the rest of the day. T-Shirts are fine, but a nice white linen shirt may be better and look more respectful.

Vatican dress code for kids – Best ideas

There is no real dress code for kids, but you’d perhaps want to protect them from hot sun in summer with covered arms anyway. A nice pair of shorts and t-shirt for boys, and a summer dress for girls would do in the summer. In the winter, make sure they have something warm. St Peter’s Basilica can be particularly cool in the winter.

Vatican city dress code summer rules

The Vatican dress code applies in summer as well as winter. It is just more difficult to adhere to in the summer months! There are rumours that the guards are a bit more lenient on the really hot days. But you cannot take this for granted, so make sure you have the appropriate cover ups with you so as not to miss out on entry.

More about Vatican dress code shoes requirements

There is no specific rule about footwear in the Vatican city. However, we would recommend you don’t wear flip flops. They can be seen as a bit too casual for visiting the Basilica for example.

In addition, if you want to climb to the top of the Basilica, or walk later on some ancient ruins down at the Roman Forum, you’ll need something that is less of a trip hazard.

Showing tattoos – What are the rules?

Tattoo rules

In theory, there are no specific rules against tattoos. However, the code is that anything deemed offensive to the Catholic Church could lead you to being escorted out. So best to cover anything you think may offend.

What about shorts, sandals & hats

As we mentioned above, shorts are not appropriate clothing for the Vatican City. That is, those that finish on or above the knee. You might think that a pair of “boardies” or surf shorts would fit the brief, but these would be too casual for the holy surroundings of the Vatican City. Stick if you must to ¾ length options.

  • Sandals – the more formal kind (not plastic flip flops ) can be acceptable, but might not be comfortable for all day exploring in the miles of museum halls. Generally, there are no footwear rules on items that would violate the dress code for Vatican City
  • Hats – hats are OK, and recommended in summer and winter. But men will need to remove them on entry to the internal attractions including St Peter’s Basilica. Women can keep wearing theirs.

What to wear to avoid looking like a tourist?

What to wear to adapt

If you aren’t wearing flip flops, short, belly tops, cut off shirts and bright neon, you probably are about half way there! If you want to dress like an Italian, think understated tailoring, lay off the denim and stick to neutral colours.

Dress Code for the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is one of the areas in the Vatican that requires the visitors to follow the dress code. No bare flesh on shoulders or above the know, and no generally offensive clothing.

Dress Code for St Peter’s Basilica

Access too to St Peter’s Basilica is also controlled. You will need to follow the dress code rules above to enter.

A note on the enforcement of the dress code

The above rules are the rules! But we do get reports that the people enforcing the dress code can be strict or less strict with them. I guess it is really hard to control by eye, and it is sort of subjective .

So don’t be surprised if you get pulled for something, but see someone else getting away with it. That’s just something that happens sometimes. Best for you just to come prepared to follow the rules so you can enjoy without worry.

The dress code for visiting the Vatican is the same that applies when you visit any church in Italy. What to wear at the Vatican?

The Vatican Museums that include the Sistine Chapel have the classification in regards to dress codes as any other church or place of worship in Italy. So what to wear at the Vatican? When visiting the Vatican Museums in Rome all visitors males and females should wear as a minimum clothing that covers both their shoulders and knees.

So if you are visiting the Vatican in the hotter summer months, an applicable dress code for the Vatican would be a t-shirt and bermuda shorts that at least caste a shadow on your knees. As a sign of respect most visitors wear long-sleeve shirts and a pair of long pants.

For those visiting the Vatican who come unprepared, as a way to skip around the dress code of the Vatican you can purchase plastic cloaks that you can wrap around yourself to cover your knees and shoulders.

But, in the warmer summer months walking around in such a garment would not be very pleasant so plan ahead and pack accordingly so that you won't be disappointed on your travels in Italy.

Some people may think that the Vatican has very strict dress codes, but throughout Italy you will find many up-market restaurants and bars that won't allow customers to enter if they are not wearing long-pants and an appropriate shirt.

What should you wear to the Vatican City?

With mass tourism industry, the vatican city welcomes over five million people into its gates each year. but unfortunately, some are turned away due to what they were wearing.

Dress Code in the Vatican City

Don’t be one of these people, instead, come prepared for your visit and be respectful. As with many other churches throughout Italy, there is a dress code that must be adhered to upon entry, and the Vatican is no different. The absolute minimum requirement for both males and females visiting the Vatican City is to cover both your knees and shoulders. Preferably you should wear long trousers and long-sleeve shirts, but in the summer months when temperatures can reach over 30 degrees Celcius many visitors forget this requirement.

Why is there a dress code in Vatican City?

The Vatican is an independent city-state and the centre of the Roman Catholic Church. It is under the power of the Pope and is his permanent dwelling when he is not travelling. As a religious state, also known as the Holy See, the Vatican has rules when it comes to dress in the city. As a religious institution, they promote a modest attire and the covering of skin, not unlike other religions. If you do not comply with the dress code the guards have the right to refuse you entry into the city and its attractions. However, if you want a way to skip around the dress-code, or you’ve left your more modest clothing at home, you can purchase plastic cloaks that wrap around you to cover your knees and shoulders. A quick, short-term solution that you can ditch at the end of the day when you’re done using it.

The Dress Code in the Vatican City

The dress code applies for both the Vatican Museums as well as to St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica . Its basic code is for both men and women both need to cover their knees and upper arms. They prohibit wearing shorts or skirts above the knee, sleeveless tops, and low-cut shirts. Men must take their hats off before entering whereas women may continue wearing theirs. Although this is sometimes harder to follow during the summer months, without following these guidelines, you will either be turned away or suggested to buy a shawl to cover up (which is bumped up in price.)

Therefore, your best bet is to follow the rules and where the appropriate clothing. Pants are your best bet, but long shorts or skirts below the knee are also allowed. Tops must cover your shoulders, so just skip out on the singlet for that day. Before lining up in the never-ending lines, make sure you’ve got this covered, as the guards will give you a once over, so there is no way to slip in unnoticed. Although this may seem difficult and overbearing, this hassle will shrink in size once you get a look at some of the most breathtaking sights you will ever visit.

General Tips and Tricks

Avoid queues, visit in the off-season, save yourself time, using public transport, what not to miss in the vatican.

Once you get past the guards, your adventure begins! Stroll through the Vatican museums, spotting famous masterpieces from the Renaissance era . Head on over to the Sistine Chapel , where the crick in your neck will be well worth the jaw-dropping view of the Chapel’s ceiling. And last, visit St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.

What to wear to the Vatican

vatican tour clothing

What is the dress code at the Vatican?

“Every place has its own dress code!” We’ve learned this from our parents since we were kids. Although we wanted to rebel against it and dress as we wished, we knew deep down inside they were right. Just like we don’t wear wedding gowns to an informal gathering and we don’t show up to the beach wearing sweaters, we don’t enter Vatican City ignoring its dress code, either. If you’ve decided to visit Vatican City on your next trip to Rome, it’s essential that you present yourself in this sacred place (and any other church) wearing appropriate clothing. Keep in mind that if you don’t comply with the dress code, you’ll be denied access to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica .

What should women wear at the Vatican

You must cover your arms, shoulders and back. Therefore, tops or shorts are not suitable. If you’re planning on wearing a dress, make sure it isn’t sleeveless. If you didn’t pack any clothes that fit the above description, we suggest you cover your arms and shoulders with a scarf or a shawl. In case you don’t have these either, you can head to the entrance of St. Anna and purchase a scarf there.

Remember that if you’re wearing a skirt, dress or shorts, they must cover your knees – hence avoid low-cuts at all costs. If you’ve packed hats in your suitcase, remember to to leave them at your accommodation as they are not allowed in Vatican City. Fortunately, there is no rule regarding footwear. However, since you’ll be walking quite a bit, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes. Shoes like sneakers are both fashionable and comfortable and can be a good choice. Here’s a quick recap on what you can wear to the Vatican:

  • T-shirts instead of tops
  • Trousers or long skirts
  • Shorts and skirts that cover your knees
  • Scarves instead of hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes instead of high heels or flip-flops

What should men wear at the Vatican

The Vatican’s dress code also applies to men. According to the rules, you should not wear sleeveless shirts or shorts. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should wear a suit, you can still wear informal clothes. Just remember that you cannot wear clothing with offensive phrases or graphics . Our recommendation is you wear a shirt that covers your shoulders plus a pair of trousers. In general, the Vatican’s dress code is much easier to comply with in winter rather than in the hot summer months. That’s why we suggest you’re extra careful about the material of your clothing , which could make the humidity easier or impossible to tolerate. For instance, linen and cotton are perfect choices to wear at the Vatican or elsewhere in Rome. To sum up, make sure to wear these:

  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Trousers or jeans

What Diplomats Should Wear to Visit the Pope

Furthermore, Vatican City also has strict dress code regulations regarding visits to the Pope from diplomats. But we should also mention that these regulations have been eased after Pope Francis. According to tradition, women who visit the Pope should wear black clothes that completely hide their body parts. Furthermore, they should also wear a scarf or lace shawl to cover their hair and shoulders. The black color in the Catholic Church signifies virtue and humbleness and only a few queens, princesses, or diplomats can wear white clothes before the Pope. For instance, Charlene, Princess of Monaco, enjoyed such privilege, while Cherie Blair, wife of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, opened herself to criticism after wearing white clothing before Pope Benedict XVI.

What NOT to take with you to the Vatican

There are other rules you should consider before your visit to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. For instance, you cannot take animals with you , with the exception for guide dogs for the blind or partially-sighted. Using camera tripods, talking on mobile phones, smoking, and taking snacks, foods or alcoholic beverages are also prohibited. We recommend you pay enough attention to these rules so as to have a pleasant and memorable visit without any interruptions. You can find more useful information about what you can take to the Vatican here.

In fact, the Vatican states that “Admission to the Museums is allowed only to properly dressed visitors”.

The Holy See is home to the Pope. Catholics believe he is God’s representative on earth.

Like in many holy places in Italy and elsewhere worldwide, it is expected that in churches and other locations in the Vatican that a modest dress code is applied.

Is There A Dress Code At The Vatican & What To Expect?

Dress code in the Vatican City

We have just discovered there is a dress code in the Vatican – but what does that actually mean?

Well, it’s a basic code you need to follow to 100% guarantee you will be allowed in. The Vatican website gives clear guidance here , but in general – anything above the knee or the upper arms should be covered.

If you fail to follow the guidance in the areas it applies to you run the risk of getting turned away. The areas where it is required are the Sistine Chapel , St Peter’s Basilica and The Vatican Museums .

Let’s get into the specifics.

How Strict Is The Vatican Dress Code?

Signs are on display at the Vatican to advise you of the requirements – the basics being that you should not show lower legs and keep your top half covered at least above the elbows.

But in reality, it is much more subjective than that. For example, as the guards decide who can and can’t enter we have had reports of people being turned away for other reasons beyond that.

This includes those wearing Shirts with offensive slogans or language , informal baseball caps or hats, low cleavage on ladies, ripped jeans and even flip flops.

On the other hand, on really hot days we have seen people being allowed in shirts and lighter clothing at a particular guard's discretion, but don’t bank on this – it is still likely you will be turned away.

Quick List Of Forbidden Things To Wear

These three things are absolutely forbidden in the Vatican Museums:

  • Shorts or skirts above the knee
  • Spaghetti strap dresses or tank tops
  • Tops exposing midriff

Thighs Are Not Forbidden (But Not Advisable)

These things are not expressly forbidden, but for good measure and respect you should avoid wearing/displaying these items:

  • Baseball caps or hats are considered inappropriate
  • Offensive t-shirts or slogans with bad language or symbols
  • Tattoos should be covered if they will cause offense
  • Flip-flops are not forbidden but are deemed very casual – use comfortable walking shoes instead
  • Ripped clothing that exposes skin is considered inappropriate

Quick List Of The Perfect Attire For The Vatican

Perfect attire for all Vatican attractions

For men , wear a shirt or long-sleeved plain t-shirt and trousers with comfortable shoes. For ladies , dresses that come to the mid calf are acceptable.

We would advise against long flowing maxi dresses, purely because you may trip as you look at the beautiful sights in the Vatican.

Same goes for flip-flops. Whilst they are not expressly forbidden, they are a trip hazard, especially on older floors or climbing stairs. They also make a loud noise in the Sistine Chapel and may be considered by some guards to be too casual for entry.

Vatican City travel tips

What Happens If You Break Vatican City Dress Code?

If you are not wearing appropriate attire you run the risk of queuing for hours only to be turned away at the last minute by the guards.

And if you disrespect the dress code once inside the museums or chapels you will be asked to leave with no refund!

Is a Dress Code For the Vatican Unreasonable?

In our view no – it is a special religious place and should be treated with respect , as with any church or other religious place of worship or establishment.

If you do not wish to comply you can borrow plastic coverups at the doors to ensure your modesty, then discard at the end.

How To Dress For The Vatican?

How to dress for the Vatican City

Vatican Dress Code Women

The Women Vatican City Dress Code is the same as it is for men!

Here are a few top tips for ladies – don’t wear high heels or high sandals. Wear comfortable shoes .

As stated before, long flowing maxi dresses can be a trip hazard, but you may prefer to wear a three-quarter length dress to keep cool in the hot summer months.

Otherwise, a long-sleeved top and trousers to at least calf level will keep you right. It is not necessary to cover the head.

Men Dress Code for the Vatican

Avoid t-shirts that show the upper arms – best to wear a semi-formal shirt and trousers with comfortable shoes to ensure you will get entry. Baseball caps or other hats are a no-no as well.

Vatican Dress Code for Children

It is a bit more flexible for kids, but still try to conform – shirts should not be strappy and shorts should be to the knee. Of course, very small babies are exempt.

Dress Code For Visiting The Vatican Most Famous Attractions

Dress code for visiting famous Vatican attractions

At which attractions do you need to consider the dress code?

Here is the list to keep you on the right path.

Vatican Museum Dress Code

Keep arms and lower legs covered , ensure you are not showing any midriff and remove hats, offensive jewelry and slogans from clothing.

The Vatican Museums are VAST – so wear comfortable shoes. If visiting in winter, wear layers so you can remove a jumper if it gets too hot inside.

Dress Code For Visiting The Vatican Sistine Chapel

Do not wear flip-flops – they make a clicking sound in this beautiful holy place!

Cover arms and legs and do not wear anything that causes offense. This includes shirts or even bags with offensive slogans or language.

You should cover any tattoos that might be deemed inappropriate.

Vatican Dress Code For St. Peter's Basilica

St Peter's Basilica entrance

Follow the same dress code as for the Sistine Chapel here.

In addition, you may want to climb the stairs to the top and get those great views. For that reason, we recommend no flip-flops or really long dresses for women as they can represent a trip hazard.

Note that if you are attending mass in the Basilica, women can wear hats but men are not allowed to.

Everyday Dress Code For Vatican City Tours

There is no specific dress code for getting on to a tour bus or a walking tour – but either way you will have to cover up to enter the attractions.

Papal Audience Dress Code

If you are attending the papal audience in St Peter’s Square you need to follow the same dress code for mass as in the internal attractions.

Vatican City Dress Code Tattoos – Should You Hide It?

Tattoo Vatican rules

Tattoos are not forbidden in the dress code, but offensive slogans or other symbols are. So, if you have a tattoo that represents something offensive to the Catholic Church you will need to keep it covered.

Is There A Dress Code At The Vatican Restaurants and Bars

There is only one bar in the Vatican City and it closes at 4 pm!

There are also a few restaurants or cafes in the attractions – if they are in the museums you should still adhere to the dress code even when eating your lunch!

Can You Be Escorted Out? What to Do?

Everyday dress code to follow in Vatican

The guards are generally very discrete.

If you are inappropriately dressed and get to the top of the queue they will ask you to cover up and offer you one of the on hand covers for your visit.

If you have somehow managed to get in without following the dress code and another guard sees you they will not likely throw you out straight away. They’ll ask you to comply and offer you one of the plastic covers.

If you are offensive or aggressively without any disregard for the rules then they will escort you off the premises and you will not get a refund for your ticket.

Visiting the Vatican

Facts and History of Vatican City

Constantine’s Vatican

The early establishment of the Vatican began with Constantine’s St. Peter’s Basilica, which stood where the current Basilica stands today. Jesus gave Simon the name Peter when he first met him and said, “You’re the stone upon which I will build my church.” After Constantine legalized Christianity in A.D. 313 with the Edict of Milan, he quickly began building that church. For Constantine, Jesus would have been as old as George Washington is in relative history to us.

The Vatican’s Name

I have read many versions of how the Vatican got its name. The most likely is that the Etruscan society living in this area referred to it as Vatica   prior to Roman settlement. It was a marshy area called Ager Vaticanus. There are a lot of other theories which may well be correct. It is an old word with many possible roots.

The Leonine City

In A.D. 846, Pope Leo IV commissioned a 39-foot wall to be constructed around the old St. Peter’s Basilica and other areas used by the clergy as a protective measure. The Saracens attacked Rome and caused significant damage to St. Peter’s Basilica, which motivated the pope to build out defenses. The area, which was larger than the current Vatican City, was proclaimed the Leonine City and stayed that way for some time.

Sottopassaggio

In 1277, there was a half-mile-long underground passageway and wall that connected the papal residence adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica to the Castel Sant’Angelo. This was a major fortification for the pope in case of attack.

Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums have residents. You won’t see the pope walking around as you visit, but he’s there. The collection of art is a mix of ancient and Renaissance or Baroque. There is even a modern religious art section.

St. Peter’s Basilica and Tomb

The Basilica of St. Peter is basically the largest and most beautiful gravestone ever built. According to Vatican dogma, it was built on the grave of St. Peter, which you can visit with special Scavi tickets. The Basilica, built during the 16th and 17th centuries, was completed in 1615 with contributions by almost every great Italian artist.

Sovereignty

In 1870, Italy was unified under the leadership of Italian-American Giuseppe Garibaldi. The government of the newly-defined Italy allowed the pope to keep a small area under sovereignty. Pope Pius IX would not agree to the terms until 1929, when the Lateran Treaty was signed under Benito Mussolini, which granted the Vatican sovereignty. This sovereignty extends beyond the Vatican City to other churches, including the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome.

How Long To Spend at Vatican City

Family walking through the Gallery of Maps at the Vatican Museums.

Short Answer:  3 to 5 hours

This is a great question! The Vatican is an immense complex of artwork. You could spend a few hours inside and see a lot of art or you could spend 3 – 5 hours and really learn the history. It depends on your level of interest.

Most people visiting the Vatican for the first time, without an art-history background, will follow the signs for the Capella Sistina or Sistine Chapel until they get there, snap their photo, and leave. Our goal is to help you have a more enriching experience. Here is a proposed Itinerary:

  • Spiral Staircase
  • Pinecone Courtyard
  • Pio Clementino Gallery
  • Gallery of Candelabra, Tapestries, and Maps
  • Raphael Rooms
  • Sistine Chapel
  • St. Peter’s Basilica

If you’re an art aficionado, also visit the Pinacoteca. Further on in this article, you’ll see a more comprehensive list of Vatican must-see artwork . If you’re going to go it alone, be well prepared. Check out our top things to see at the Vatican .

How To Get To Vatican City

View of St. Peter's Dome in Vatican City

Luckily, getting to Vatican City is really easy. Depending on your preferences, you can take the metro, a bus, catch a cab, or just walk.

Metro (about 20 minutes):

There are two metro stops located near the Vatican Museums entrance: Ottaviano and Cipro. These stops are located on the A-line (orange line). So, if you jump on near the Spanish Steps (Spagna) or Termini train station, make sure you catch the A-line going towards Battistini and get off at either Ottaviano or Cipro.

The entrance to the Vatican Museums is a 5-minute walk from either of these stops. Of course, you can also catch the A-line from many other stops, just check the Rome Metro schedule. You can buy tickets at the metro station or a corner store, but not from the driver.

Pro Tip:  Always budget an extra 10 to 20 minutes if you have a scheduled event like a Vatican Tour . This way you don’t have to rush and it’ll give you time for that quintessential morning espresso.

Bus (about 20 minutes):

From the Termini train station, head outside and get on bus number 64. The bus ride will take about 20 minutes and your stop is the last one on the route: P.za Stazione S. Pietro. Getting to the Vatican Museums’ entrance is about a 15-minute walk from the bus station.

You can also take the number 81 bus from the Colosseum area (the bus stop is located right outside of the metro station—B-line). The 81 bus route ends in Piazza Risorgimento, which is a five-minute walk to the Vatican Museums’ entrance.

Taxi (depends on the departure point):

A taxi ride should cost no more than €20 if you’re staying in the historic center of Rome. When you get in the taxi, tell the driver to take you to the Vatican Museums’ entrance, otherwise, they’ll probably take you to St. Peter’s Basilica.

The most typical way to get a taxi in Rome is to go to a taxi stand. These are located near every major tourist attraction. If you aren’t located near one, you can always order a coffee and pastry at a café and ask the people working there to call you one.

Walking (about 20 minutes):

You can easily walk to the Vatican Museums if you’re staying near Piazza Navona or in Campo de’ Fiori. Prati is also within walking distance. Technically, you can walk to the Vatican from basically anywhere in Rome, depending on your level of fitness.

It’s important to take into consideration that you’ll be on your feet for 3 hours or more as you visit the Vatican. I would recommend taking public transport because you’ll be on your feet plenty in Rome.

Pro Tip:  A neat trick for using your map app on your phone is to set your course while you’re on wifi on airplane mode. GPS will still show your location while you’re on airplane mode—it won’t reroute you if you go off the route but it will show you where you are.

What To See at Vatican City

People looking up at the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's The Last Judgement in the background.

This is a list of the top things to see at the Vatican—an excerpt from our much more elaborate mega-guide on the top things to see at the Vatican Museums written by a Vatican guide. Check it out for more in-depth descriptions, history, and images.

1. Spiral Staircase

The staircase was built by the famous architect Giuseppe Momo in 1932. It was commissioned by Pope Pius XI and was to be created for the new entrance to the Vatican Museums.

2. The Terrace with a view of the Basilica and Vatican Gardens

3. the pinacoteca (for art lovers).

Pinacoteca means “painting gallery” in Italian and, considering that all the popes have historically been the main patron of the arts for centuries, they don’t disappoint. Be sure to see:

  • Transfiguration (Raphael)
  • The Annunciation (Raphael)
  • Crowning of the Virgin (Raphael)
  • St. Jerome (Da Vinci)
  • St Matthew (Guido Reni)
  • Deposition (Caravaggio)
  • The Crucifixion of Saint Peter (Guido Reni)
  • Martyrdom of St. Erasmus (Nicolas Poussin)
  • Astronomical Observations (Donato Creti)
  • Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Wenzel Peter)

4. The Pinecone Courtyard

The pinecone courtyard is a massive courtyard that connects the main galleries leading to the Sistine Chapel with the Pio Clementino and Braccio Nuovo Galleries. Reports have been written of jousting tournaments and bullfights taking place under the Borgia Pope AlexanderVI in the 15th century and supposedly Pope Leo X housed his pet elephant, Hanno, here in the 16th century. Be sure to see:

  • Colossal Statue of Augustus
  • Sphere within a Sphere
  • The Pinecone

5. The Pio Clementino Gallery

The collection of classical statues you will see in these galleries was started at the beginning of the 16th century by Pope Julius II. The gallery is named, however, for popes from a much later date: Clement XIV(1769-1774) and Pius VI (1775-1799), who created the current galleries you’ll walk through. Much of the artwork here was taken by Napoleon and returned to the Museum after his defeat. Be sure to see:

  • Apoxyomenos
  • Apollo Belvedere
  • Laocoön Group
  • The Belvedere Torso
  • The Bath of Nero
  • Statue of Hercules in Bronze
  • Sarcophagus of Saint Helena

6. The Candelabra Gallery

As the name suggests, this gallery owes its name to the enormous marble candlesticks that you’ll find in each section as you walk down the hallway. The gallery was completely renovated during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII Pecci (1878-1903), which is what you see today. It was meant to be built so that each piece is like a furnishing for the house. Be sure to see:

  • Artemis of Ephesus
  • Lapus Lazuli Mosaic
  • The Persian Warrior

7. The Gallery of Tapestries

As you walk through the gallery, you will see tapestries on the right-hand side dedicated to stories of the life of the Barberini Pope Urban VIII (17th century). On the left-hand side, are stories from the Bible whose original drawings were executed by the school of Raphael, then woven in Flanders.

  • Resurrection of Christ

8. The Gallery of the Maps

By far one of the most over-the-top galleries as far as decor goes, this room is literally a gigantic mural with frescoes on both sides of maps depicting Italy. Pope Gregory XIII, also known as the calendar pope, commissioned this room to be painted so he could accurately study the lands in which he lived and the surrounding areas.

  • The Grotesques
  • The Ceiling
  • Map of Sicily
  • Map of Lazio
  • Vatican Radio Station (Out of the window to your right)

9. Raphael Rooms

The four rooms known as the Raphael rooms were painted by Raphael and his students between 1508 and 1524. They were commissioned first by Pope Julius II (1503 to 1513), supposedly because he refused to live in the Borgia apartments on the floor below due to his hatred for the man. These rooms were also used by his successors, specifically Leo X the Medici Pope (1512-1521). Be sure to see:

  • Room of Constantine
  • Vision of the Cross
  • Battle of Constantine against Maxentius
  • The Victory of Christianity over Paganism (Ceiling)
  • Room of Heliodorus
  • Liberation of St.Peter
  • Encounter of Leo the Great with Attila
  • Room of the Segnatura
  • The School of Athens
  • Room of the Fire in the Borgo
  • Fire in the Borgo

10. The Sistine Chapel

This chapel needs no introduction. Originally named Capella Magna (Great Chapel), it was restored by Pope Sixtus IV (pontiff from 1471 to 1484) in 1480. Sixtus IV had famous early Renaissance artists, who lived a generation before Michelangelo and Raphael, paint the fake draperies, the life of Moses and Christ (side walls), and the Pope (above the windows) Sixtus’ nephew. Julius II had Michelangelo paint the ceiling in 1508. Be sure to see:

  • The Central Panels
  • The Side Panels
  • The Stories of Moses
  • The Stories of Jesus
  • The Last Judgment

11. St. Peter’s Basilica

For me personally, there is no church that compares in beauty. It is the ultimate expression of space, beauty, and monumental grandeur. It also happens to have an amazing history to it as well. When you’re there, be sure to see:

  • La Baldacchino
  • St. Peter’s Square

Places To Eat Inside and Nearby

A delicious sandwich with mozzarella, prosciutto, and rocket on it.

Like all great Italian museums, you can get coffee and food inside the Vatican Museums. Here are a few recommendations for getting a bite to eat and some refreshments inside and nearby the Vatican.

Inside the Vatican

Caffetteria Centrale : €€ | Coffee Shop —With sub-par reviews that you would expect in a cafeteria-style eatery, this coffee shop and light eatery will get the job done if you want to spend more than 4 or 5 hours inside the Vatican Museums. To find it, look for signs near the Pinacoteca.

Bar: €€ | Quick Snacks —There is a small bar for coffee and pastries located near the Sistine Chapel. Look for the signs as you get close.

St. Peter’s Dome Bar: €€ | Coffee Shop —Yep, you can get coffee on top of St. Peter’s Dome. There is a little bar open basically whenever they want to be open. But if it’s open, stop for a coffee and enjoy the view.

Near the Vatican

Hostaria Dino e Toni : € | Roman Restaurant —Somehow this owner-operated and authentic Roman restaurant has yet to get touristy. They make good food with relatively friendly service, and they may just order for you. Come here for pizza, pasta, and apps.

200 Gradi : €€ | Sandwich Shop —Have a big day of sightseeing planned after your Vatican visit? This sandwich shop is perfect. You can get really tasty to-go sandwiches or sit down inside. Super reasonably priced.

La Zanzara : €€ | Bistro —A bit more cool and trendy with a modern spin on Italian classics, this place feels like a French bistro but the food is definitely Italian. It’s great for a cocktail and sit-down lunch.
