certainly shahrukh's best turn, in which he plays a character he's never played before playing a character he's played a hundred times. maybe the smartest yet totally sincerest sendup of hindi film romance since basu chatterjee, outstanding use of songs and recurring musical motif, plus the breathtaking formal grace notes and slow transformations this takes are just incredible. a perfect movie

a kind but timid man falls in love with a woman when he sees her laughing, the marry under tragic circumstances, she thinks she will never be happy again, he sees her laughing at a movie and in that moment recreates himself, or splits, in a game that starts out as harmless and becomes slowly more unsettling...

a comedy of remarriage under the sign of gol mal and the nutty professor , a lavishly produced blockbuster about two or three very lonesome people, the uses and limits of (filmi) fantasy, the possible healing power of religion and the danger of romantic devotion as masochism.

Ok so this movie completely destroyed me!!!!! It's one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in ages because of its setup (which, like all the best melodramatic plot devices, is at once totally preposterous and DEEPLY EMOTIONALLY REAL) and the amazing performances from SRK and Anushka Sharma. There's a layer of pure sweetness and delight in this movie but also a ton of complex and much more ambiguous reflections on love, identity, and fantasy. One of the great movies about and for cinephiles.

10 of the Best Poems about Roads

By Dr Oliver Tearle (Loughborough University)

Roads often feature in poetry, as symbols for our lives (the ‘journey’ we are travelling on, whether on our way to something, or heading away from it), or as markers of mankind’s interaction with nature. Below are ten of the greatest poems about roads in all of English literature, each of which does something rather different with the road or track it presents to us.

1. John Clare, ‘ On a Lane in Spring ’.

A Little Lane, the brook runs close beside And spangles in the sunshine while the fish glide swiftly by And hedges leafing with the green spring tide From out their greenery the old birds fly And chirp and whistle in the morning sun The pilewort glitters ’neath the pale blue sky …

The title of this poem by one of Romantic literature’s overlooked greats, John Clare (1793-1864), says it all: Clare describes the things he sees on a country lane during springtime, his observations tumbling out into the poem in gleeful abandon and apparent spontaneity.

Walt Whitman, ‘ Song of the Open Road ’.

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune, Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing, Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms, Strong and content I travel the open road.

The earth, that is sufficient, I do not want the constellations any nearer, I know they are very well where they are, I know they suffice for those who belong to them …

First published in Whitman’s landmark 1856 collection Leaves of Grass , ‘Song of the Open Road’ celebrates the open road as a democratic place bringing people together from all walks of life: the road, we might say, is the great leveller.

A. E. Housman, ‘ White in the moon the long road lies ’.

White in the moon the long road lies, The moon stands blank above; White in the moon the long road lies That leads me from my love.

Still hangs the hedge without a gust, Still, still the shadows stay: My feet upon the moonlit dust Pursue the ceaseless way …

In this poem, the king of lugubrious English verse writes about leaving his beloved, with the road lying ahead of him that ‘leads me from my love’. And although he trusts that the same road will eventually lead him back to his love, first he must travel far, far away.

Rudyard Kipling, ‘ The Way through the Woods ’.

They shut the road through the woods Seventy years ago. Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees.

So begins this classic Kipling poem about an abandoned road in the woods, which turns into an almost haunted road in the final stanza, as Kipling suggests that the road ‘remembers’ the men and horses who used to pass through it.

Charlotte Mew, ‘ The Forest Road ’.

The forest road, The infinite straight road stretching away World without end: the breathless road between the walls Of the black listening trees: the hushed, grey road Beyond the window that you shut to-night Crying that you would look at it by day – There is a shadow there that sings and calls But not for you. Oh! hidden eyes that plead in sleep Against the lonely dark, if I could touch the fear And leave it kissed away on quiet lids – If I could hush these hands that are half-awake, Groping for me in sleep I could go free …

Another woodland road poem, but in this 1916 poem, Mew – a poet associated with the ‘Georgian’ school though also sometimes seen as proto-modernist – offers an altogether more macabre take on the road, as the poem’s speaker imagines her lover’s corpse rotting on a hillside.

G. K. Chesterton, ‘ The Rolling English Road ’.

Before the Roman came to Rye or out to Severn strode, The rolling English drunkard made the rolling English road. A reeling road, a rolling road, that rambles round the shire, And after him the parson ran, the sexton and the squire; A merry road, a mazy road, and such as we did tread The night we went to Birmingham by way of Beachy Head …

‘A merry road, a mazy road, and such as we did tread’: written in opposition to the prohibition of alcohol, this is one of Chesterton’s most famous poems. The poem celebrates having a few drinks and then merrily staggering home as almost a national pastime: ‘Before the Roman came to Rye or out to Severn strode, / The rolling English drunkard made the rolling English road.’

Robert Frost, ‘ The Road Not Taken ’.

Is this the most misinterpreted poem of the twentieth century ? Frost’s speaker recalls how he came to a fork in the road and opted to pursue ‘the one less travelled by’. Yet this isn’t quite true: both possible roads were equal, and Frost’s speaker admits that the idea that he chose to tread a less popular path is a bit of retrospective mythmaking. No list of great road poems could be without this.

Edward Thomas, ‘ Roads ’.

I love roads: The goddesses that dwell Far along invisible Are my favourite gods …

So begins this paean to roads by one of the great English poets of the early twentieth century. The shadow of the First World War (Thomas enlisted in 1915) can be seen in this poem, with its reference to ‘all roads’ now leading ‘to France’.

Wilfred Owen, ‘ The Roads Also ’.

The roads also have their wistful rest, When the weathercocks perch still and roost, And the looks of men turn kind to clocks And the trams go empty to their drome. The streets also dream their dream …

Written for the Sitwells’ anthology Wheels in summer 1918, ‘The Roads Also’ begins with the statement ‘The roads also have their wistful rest’, with Owen going on to reflect on the way the many lost lives in the war have impacted upon people back home.

Philip Larkin, ‘ No Road ’.

A poem called ‘No Road’ in a list of the best road poems? Well, yes, given how Larkin uses the metaphor of the road to describe a break-up, this is a fine example of how roads have been used (in countless songs as well as poems) to denote the distance between two lovers (or would-be lovers).

Continue to explore the world of poetry with these classic animal poems , these birthday poems , these classic religious poems , and these poems about Oxford .

The Endless…Road…

I can’t see where it ends I have been running for long That I can’t even remember what I am running from I reach the first bend I take a second to catch my breath That’s when I realize I haven’t encountered a single soul Looking around, I am back to where I started from.

Downtown Mattituck’s Love Lane Offers Local Eats, Sweets, and More

' src=

By Mary McGlone

As the Main Road curves east in Mattituck,  Love Lane  sits discreetly on the left, replete with all the heart desires. This short block on the  North Fork  is a slice of historic Mattituck, lined with small shops inviting customers inside. It is a step back in time, “a little slice of hometown America you don’t really see anymore,” according to Michael Affatato, owner of The Village Cheese Shop.

The heart of downtown Mattituck is beloved by both locals and visitors, Love Lane is actually three blocks long, winding north and ending at the shore of Mattituck Inlet. But its real center is the one-block stretch from the Main Road to Pike Street. On this one block are over a dozen small businesses, many woman-owned, offering everything from cheese platters to local wine, flowers to jewelry.

“Small businesses love what they do and are a big part of the local community,” says Lauren Lombardi of Lombardi’s Love Lane Market, who calls Love Lane “a quaint little street with so much love.”

The street was originally named Railroad Avenue when the Long Island Rail Road arrived in Mattituck in 1844. The train station is a short walk down Pike Street. The path winding from the train station to the Mattituck Inlet, frequented by lovers seeking privacy and a scenic view, came to be known as Love Lane, and later the name extended to the whole street.

While Love Lane has come a long way — old-timers remember a laundromat and several dusty storefronts — it retains its down-home character. The block is anchored by the post office and corner hardware store, its scuffed wooden floor a testament to its history. Locals have come to this block for generations, and it is still the heart of the roughly 9-acre hamlet. Its charm — and the appeal of being able to find good local food and products close to home — draws in residents of neighboring Laurel, New Suffolk and Cutchogue.

“Love Lane has become a destination for a lot of people who head to the North Fork, but it’s a staple for the local residents, as well,” says Chelsea Chalone, co-owner of Love Lane Sweet Shoppe.

Love Lane in Mattituck

While the street is a destination in all seasons, there is no more perfect time to visit Love Lane than Valentine’s Day. Here, then, a guide to its offerings:

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

For flowers with a personal touch,  Mattituck Florist  offers handmade floral design. Owner and floral designer Danielle LaScala says, “Everything we do is made exactly for you and only you. We’re an independent shop, and we love working with customers.” The shop has been on Love Lane for 12 years, after relocating from the Main Road. In addition to flowers, the shop offers balloons, pottery, statuary and plants. LaScala encourages customers to order early for the best selection. Order online, by phone, or in person.  95 Love Lane, 631-298-5840,  mattituckflorist.com

SWEETS FOR THE SWEETY

Chocolate lovers will delight in the selection at  Love Lane Sweet Shoppe , owned by sisters Chelsea Chalone and Ashley Rutkowski. The business has been on Love Lane for 32 years. For Valentine’s Day, choose from heart-shaped gummies, jelly beans and Godiva chocolate, or fill a box with a selection of individual chocolates. They also carry greeting cards, balloons, stuffed animals and Valentine’s-themed gifts. Curbside orders and shipping available.  125 Love Lane, 631-298-2276,  [email protected]

A TISKET, A TASKET, A GREEN & YELLOW BASKET

For a personal gift, the staff at  The Village Cheese Shop  will help customers create their own basket with selections of cut cheeses and meats, dried fruit, caviar, sparkling wine and crème fraiche — or choose their pre-made Valentine’s Day platter or basket. The small shop, in its 21st year, has a European flair and offers customers personal attention. According to owner Michael Affatato, “Love Lane is the hub of the foodie movement out here on the North Fork. The history of farming and agriculture dates back to the Civil War.” The shop offers curbside pickup and island-wide delivery.  105 Love Lane, 631-298-8556,  thevillagecheeseshop.com

NO LOVE SINCERER THAN THE LOVE OF FOOD

For a romantic, no-fuss dinner,  Lombardi’s Love Lane Market  offers a Valentine’s Day gourmet dinner to heat and serve at home. Or stop in for a heart-shaped box of cheeses or charcuterie to-go. Owner Lauren Lombardi sources locally whenever possible, taking pride in imported Italian specialties, locally made artisanal items and homemade sausage. The market itself is a visual delight of beautiful, locally sourced food products. Curbside pickup, delivery available.  170 Love Lane, 631-298-9500,  lombardislovelanemarket.com

Early risers can find extensive breakfast options at  Ammirati’s . Their lunch menu includes many seafood options, including lobster roll, crab cake sandwich and shrimp po’ boy, for that North Fork feeling.  135 Love Lane, 631-298-7812,  ammiratisoflovelane.com

Love Lane Kitchen  is a popular option for good, local food, with outdoor dining in season.  240 Love Lane, 631-298-8989,  lovelanekitchen.com

IN VINO, VERITAS

For a bottle or wine by the glass, visit  Roanoke Vineyards Wine Bar . As a throwback to Prohibition days, they even have a walk-up wine window.  165 Love Lane, 631-298-7677,  roanokevineyards.net

Love Lane, Mattituck.

MORE TO LOVE

Mint boutique  offers jewelry and accessories. Online and in-store orders can be shipped.  260 Love Lane, 631-298-8009,  shopmint.com

For a less traditional gift, let the friendly staff at  Orlowski’s True Value Hardware  help you complete a home project or design and paint a heart-shaped lawn sign to thank essential workers.  320 Love Lane, 298-8420

Then, buy a heart stamp at the post office and mail your Valentine’s Day card with a Mattituck postmark. And don’t forget to take a photograph of your sweetie under the Love Lane street sign.

The isolation of the pandemic has reminded many of the value of community and supporting small businesses. Love Lane shows that the journey is more important than the destination.

10 Reasons I Love Traveling (and Why You Will, Too)

  • August 2, 2023
  • 6 minute read

It’s no secret that most people desire to travel much more often than the normal 9-to-5 gives them time for. Traveling is a transformative experience that enriches our lives in countless ways. From discovering new cultures to pushing the limits of our comfort zones, the thrill and adventure of traveling offers an escape from the ordinary.

In this blog post, I’ll share ten compelling reasons why I love traveling, and I’m certain that these reasons will inspire you to embark on your own adventures.

Here are the top 10 reasons I love traveling!

we are travelling the love lane

1 || We get to experience new cultures

This is perhaps the most rewarding aspect of travel. Sadly, it’s lost on many people, especially nowadays, as social media is flooding with people just looking for a good photo or to be able to say they’ve been there. Don’t be that way! Actually immerse yourself in these new cultures and you will absolutely fall in love.

It also teaches you empathy and increases your overall social intelligence. Embracing different cultures broadens your perspectives in unimaginable ways and fosters a deeper sense of appreciation for the diversity our world has to offer. These encounters not only introduce you to new customs and traditions practiced around the world, but also creates lasting memories that will shape your understanding of the world and the people living in it.

  • This one is a large reason why I loved my time at Oxford, England . Immersing myself in their way of life for 5 weeks really grew my appreciation for slow travel, whereas before, I was a 100% advocate for fast-paced travel.

2 || It takes us out of our comfort zones

We all have our familiar boundaries that we feel safe in, and once we reach adulthood, and get into a routine, we don’t often stray outside of them. However, living this way leads to remaining stagnant, to getting comfortable and not continuously trying to grow. Stepping outside the bounds of our familiarity is where our personal growth happens. Even if you don’t realize it, we all have more growing to do. It never, never stops!

Travel only enhances, and often speeds up, this growth! It challenges you to face the unknown and forces you to face uncertainty. Perhaps you travel to a country with a language barrier, or head to an adventure capital like New Zealand to bungee jump . Whatever you end up doing, it’s the act of embracing these challenges that ultimately fosters personal growth. This can result in increased resilience, adaptability, and confidence.

3 || Traveling hones planning and organization skills

This is definitely one of my favorite reasons I love traveling! Planning a trip requires meticulous organization and attention to detail. Sure, you could wing it by not creating an itinerary, doing little to no research, and leaving bookings for the day off, but that’s asking for chaos. While you might enjoy the trip, things will inevitably go wrong, and you’ll hit constant bumps along the way.

For me, I plan as much as I possibly can. My guides here on the ErickaRheanne blog (such as my guide to visiting Massachusetts ) are so in-depth to avoid any problems or complications. And so many trips have gone perfectly because of this intensive planning and attention to detail.

From crafting itineraries to booking accommodations, transportation, and activities, traveling sharpens these planning and organizational skills. The ability to research, budget, and prepare for a journey not only ensures the overall travel experience goes as seamlessly as possible but also proves invaluable in terms of our personal and professional lives.

  • My continuously growing planning skills are evidenced through my extensive, comprehensive travel guides, such as this one on Alaska .

Reasons I love traveling

4 || It teaches us skills applicable in life and career

Building upon what I said earlier, traveling teaches us valuable life knowledge and skills that can help us greatly in other areas of our lives. Traveling teaches you how to improvise, communicate effectively, and adapt to a variety of different situations.

All of these skills are transferable and will continue to benefit you for the rest of your life. This also boosts your confidence and assurance in further ventures you might pursue.

5 || It boosts our happiness and gives us something to look forward to

Anticipation is an extremely powerful emotion. It can literally impact your mental health even in the worst of times. Travel fills our hearts with excitement and joy.

The mere thought of exploring new destinations, indulging in local food, and immersing ourselves in breathtaking landscapes can instantly lift our spirits and add happiness and worth to our lives.

Planning a trip also gives you something to look forward to and keeps your mind off of areas of your life that cause you stress, anger, or sadness. Travel can also be a selfish activity (in a good way!) that forces you to think about yourself and put your desires first even if you’re the type to put everyone else ahead of yourself.

6 || It frees us from the constraints of regular life and allows us to escape reality

Sometimes, the routine of daily life can get monotonous. Or, for some, daily life might not be anything like what they imagined for themselves. Traveling can liberate you from the demands of work and responsibilities by offering a reprieve via escapism.

As you immerse yourself in new surroundings, you’ll experience rejuvenating freedom and return to your daily life with more energy, or perhaps a new outlook.

we are travelling the love lane

7 || Traveling opens us up to new friendships and romantic connections

Whether you’re traveling with friends or family, or going solo, visiting new places can open you up to reconnections or new connections. Whether it’s a romantic encounter in a charming city or a meaningful friendship forged during a group tour, these connections can enrich your life in ways you never imagined.

8 || It helps us reflect and get in touch with our feelings and emotions

There’s something about travel that really gets us in touch with our innermost thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, we end up confronting and reflecting on things we didn’t even know were festering deep inside.

Traveling offers us a unique opportunity to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life and reconnect with ourselves in meaningful ways. This times allows us to reflect on ourselves and our life, then reassess how to approach our lives and direct our potential futures when we return.

9 || It lets us experience rare, inspiring moments of awe and adrenaline

One of my absolute favorite feelings from travel is the awe I feel at the truly amazing beauty of some destinations. The feeling is best when it’s completely unexpected.

This occurred when I hiked Arthur’s Seat while I was in Edinburgh, Scotland . I actually was not too thrilled about the idea leading up to it, because I figured it was “just another hill” and what could be so great about the view from up there that I couldn’t get in the United States? Boy, was I wrong! It ended up being my FAVORITE part of my 5 weeks of travel throughout in the United Kingdom .

Any kind of adventure that spikes my adrenaline is also a big reason to love travel. Whether you are standing on the glass of the Skywalk at Grand Canyon West, or bungee jumping in Queenstown, New Zealand, or whitewater rafting in Colorado, adventure awaits you everywhere.

All these experiences can leave you breathless with excitement and wonder, and what better feeling is there than that?

10 || Traveling aids us in personal transformations and allows us to live out our dreams

Ultimately, traveling has a transformative power unlike anything else. It can truly make you more open-minded, adventurous, and fulfilled. The memories you make while traveling will continue to shape who you become, and will give you the additional courage you need to chase after your dreams, and the life you desire.

It can also simply just give you a sense of purpose and renew your vigor for life.

Reasons I love traveling

And those are 10 reasons I love traveling and why I think you will, too!

Through travel, you can experience self-discovery while also creating unforgettable memories. These experiences can teach you invaluable skills that encourage growth in your personal and professional life while also increasing your mental health.

There’s so many other reasons I love traveling that I didn’t list here. And if you’re ready to bite the bullet and find your own reasons to love travel, I’ve got tons of information on planning your upcoming travels.

europe shoulder season travel

Come summer, travel to Europe will be top of mind for plenty of Americans with vacation on the brain.

But can we afford it? Summers especially can be crowded, hot and packed with tourists driving up rates as locals flee for the countryside and beaches — not really the best time to be visiting.

Plus, this year, there’s an extra level of expense added, with the 2024 Olympics taking Paris for the months of July and August.

A tower in the city

And that won’t just impact Paris, but all the destinations like the French wine regions, the Cote d’Azur and even London and Brussels and Amsterdam — all easily accessible by rail and likely to receive plenty of extra visitors.

So you might still be going — but you might be going before or after the summer, this time around. And according to a new study , that’s totally fine.

For example, did you know that Paris can be a pretty good deal, as long as you’re not insisting on the peak travel periods?

The number crunchers at Radical Storage urge travelers not looking to go into heavy debt to select the shoulder season, when visitors can save a whopping average of 60.3% on their hotel stays, one of biggest budget busters on a Paris itinerary, where peak season nightly rates averaged $866.

Wait until shoulder season and see those same rates plummet to $344, the research revealed. That’s a discount of $522.

Shoulder seasons can vary by destination, but are by definition the times between peak and off-peak. And, most importantly, unlike during low season, the weather isn’t terrible. (If you’ve spent a winter in Paris, you know that’s an issue.)

A bridge over water with a building in the background in Budapest

“Shoulder season is the period before or after peak season but not yet the off-season. For example, many European destinations have a very busy summer (July/August) but May, June, September, and October may be considered shoulder season (it varies per destination), while January could be considered the off-season or low season,” the study stated.

“Visiting destinations in shoulder season usually means lower costs and lower crowds, while still keeping good enough weather for tourism.”

To find the best times to travel to Europe, the study pored over data from Google Flights and prices for thousands of hotels. Besides beaucoup bargain boltholes in Paris, they also found that flights to Budapest in the off-season sank to 56.6% of peak season highs, Thrillist reported .

And while Budapest had the best drop in prices, it was far from the best deal, overall — peak pricing for cities like Stockholm from the States averaged about $778, according to the study, and $537 during shoulder season — a drop of 30.9 percent.

As part of the study’s findings, the authors compiled a list of the best shoulder season month to visit a selection of cities around the world. Here are their picks for many of Europe’s most popular destinations.

Dear Annie: Help! My husband doesn’t love my dogs.

  • Annie Lane Advice columnist

Dear Annie: I grew up never allowed to have pets. I’ve been married almost 30 years to a man who allowed me to have a small inside dog, and he doesn’t mind her but hates the two we have outside. Both are rescues, one from his oldest son that had him tied to a tree, the other from a rescue group. Both weigh under 7 pounds. He hates them and looks for any excuse to get mad about them.

The issue is that, if our granddaughter brings a pet for us to take care of, it can do no wrong because we love our granddaughter, no matter how stinky or destructive the animal. This hurts my heart and makes me feel like he puts up with them because he loves her. What about me?

— Protective of Pets

Dear Protective: Sit down with your husband to tell him how much it means to you to care for your animals and how it hurts to feel like this interest of yours is not reciprocated. Encourage him to engage more with the pets with the hope that it might make him feel more connected to them, just as he feels connected to your granddaughter’s pets, and see what boundaries there are to set to make him feel more comfortable having the dogs in your shared space. May this raw, candid conversation be a step toward understanding each other better and strengthening your marriage.

Dear Annie: My husband of 35 years has taken to letting himself go. We are both in our 60s and have, in the past, enjoyed hiking, walking around our neighborhood and getting some exercise. He is a recovered alcoholic and has a powerful taste for sweets, eating them often and usually clandestinely. He has gained a fair amount of weight and has had some recent problems with his knees and one hip.

I have suggested exercise and a sensible diet, but he does not seem to find it an important suggestion. We have good insurance, although he does not see a doctor or dentist. He hobbles when he walks now.

Should I let him be? I am tired of telling him how I feel regarding this issue and know I will soon be a widow.

— Impending Widow

Dear Impending Widow: Your concerns are both valid and pressing. Perhaps getting your husband to agree to a health checkup under the guise of routine care will lead to natural conversations about his diet and exercise with a professional.

Let him know how much you value your time together and your future, emphasizing that his health directly affects the quality and longevity of your shared life. At the end of the day, it’s simple: You love him and don’t want to lose him. This might make the situation more relatable and urgent, inspiring him to make changes.

COMMENTS
