Mid-afternoon Western Alpine tour with Hammer Karl was perfect for the family

After reading many reviews, we chose to take the red bus tour to Logan Pass on Going To The Sun Road over Labor Day weekend. It was cool but clear. Karl was a fun guide who wove a continual narrative about the park's history, occasional stories with punky endings, poetry and a song. That was the ONLY way to really enjoy the ride without missing the sights or stressing over the drive! The next day we could just take the hiker/biker shuttle to get to the trails. Amazing story about construction of this road! We will base ourselves on the east side next time and take another red bus to more GBP viewpoints. You can't help but see God's amazing handiwork here!

Driver was so friendly and very knowledgeable. The red bus was comfy, but be aware each bench seat seats 4 & the bus is usually sold out early. If your on the back outside your sitting over a wheel well- so not much leg room (I'm 5'4"). Plenty of stops & driver happy to take photos of you on your camera. We took all day trip & had lunch choices at lodge. Blankets provided, if needed. Remember services end mid September 😬

We boarded our #91 Red Bus at the West Glacier KOA. This was so convenient as that was where we were staying. The Red Bus tour is definitely the way to see Glacier National Park. Jammer Cas, our driver, was very informative and kept a running narrative about the park during the entire day. Although the ride was cold (be sure to wear layers), the provided blankets help keep off the chill. Rolling back the canvas top of the bus gives you a better view than you would find in any car. AND you can lollygag all you want because the Jammer is doing the driving. We made a few short stops for photo ops and had an hour lunch at Many Glacier. All in all, I highly recommend it.

western alpine tour review

The Red Bus Tour is a fantastic way to see all of Going to the Sun Road without fighting traffic or narrow winding roads. Our tour driver was finishing his first season at Glacier, but you never would have known it. He gave us lots of interesting information about the park and the history behind the Red Buses. The tour stops at all the major sights and some of the smaller pull outs parking permitted. I would recommend anyone who doesn’t want the white knuckle drive through the continental divide do this tour.

As first time park visitors, this was definitely a worthwhile event for our 1st full day in the park. We boarded the bus at East Glacier Park Lodge and then spent the day being educated and awed by the park. Suggestions: take a hat and sunscreen; Choose row 1,2 or 3; Obviously camera (and binoculars). So much to see high up on the mountains. Great lunch options at Lake McDonald.

We took the Red Bus tour after we had already been through the Sun Road and it was great to do it again. Our tour guy Jammer Drew really knew a lot about the park and brought so many visuals and unknown facts to life for us. While we had seen the same views the day before we learned so much about it from our guide. It is also nice to have someone else drive the car on the narrow roads. I would really recommend this as a must-do attraction for the park. You won't regret it.

Visiting GNP 9/7/24 to 9/14/24. Staying at Apgar Cabins for 3 days, then 3 days at St. Mary Village Great Bear Lodge. We want to do a short Red Bus Tour, so either Eastern or Western Alpine tour. Will the 9-mile road paving project on the Apgar end be done by fall 2024? Leaning towards booking the Eastern Alpine Tour for this reason.

== Will the 9-mile road paving project on the Apgar end be done by fall 2024? ==

It is supposed to be completed this spring. You can check GNP's website for updates closer to the summer season - the construction page hasn't been updated for 2024 projects yet: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/projectwork.htm

What does your full schedule look like?

One advantage to doing the west side tour, perhaps on your first day in the park, would be to get a nice overview before you start touring on your own.

Thanks for the link. I'll keep an eye on the paving project.

Whatever section of the GTSR we don't see on the Red Bus tour, we can always drive ourselves. As a nervous passenger, which is scarier: driving the GTSR east to west or west to east?? (Ha, ha!) Thanks

I do recommend driving the GTTSR as often as possible during your trip, unless you find that you are too nervous to enjoy it.

== As a nervous passenger, which is scarier: driving the GTSR east to west or west to east?? ==

I am usually a solo driver, so I don't have much passenger experience on the GTTSR.

I find the east side from St. Mary to Logan Pass pretty easy to drive in either direction.

All of the road has some kind of barrier between the road and any drop offs (either railings or rocks). The speed limit is generally slow - 45 at the highest, lower on some of the upper sections of the road.

Also note that on the 7th and 8th you will need a vehicle reservation for the west side of the GTTSR between the hours of 6am-3pm, unless you have a service reservation or decide to use the GTTSR shuttles from Apgar (which run on a reduced schedule after Labor Day): https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/vehicle-reservations.htm

After the 8th, no vehicle reservations will be needed in the park.

Here’s a link for the bridge project/remaining paving on the west side near Lake McDonald Lodge:

https://highways.dot.gov/federal-lands/projects/mt/pra-glac-10-45

I would think that project updates will start happening again this spring when the bridge project gets going again. You can also monitor the information available on the GNP website.

Have a great trip.

Glacier Park Red Bus Tours

Price & Hours

Driving around Glacier is a spectacular way to see the sights – particularly along Going-to-the-Sun Road – but drivers may sometimes miss out when they're behind the wheel. Let someone else do the driving by taking a famed Red Bus Tour. These buses – chauffeured by drivers known as "Jammers" – date back to the 1930s, and feature canvas rollback tops that offer unencumbered views of the surrounding landscape. Plus, each bus accommodates just 16 passengers.

Tour Duration and Details

There are nine tour routes in total. Tours depart from Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, St. Mary Lodge and Rising Sun Motor Inn on the east side. On the west side, you can catch the tour at Lake McDonald Lodge, Apgar Visitor Center and the West Glacier KOA. Additional departure points may be available for select tours. Depending on which route you take, you could explore popular sights like Lake McDonald Lodge, Logan Pass , St. Mary Valley and Two Medicine . You may also get to see the alpine areas of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Tours run during the peak season – typically from June through September or October – but exact dates will vary depending on the weather. Duration also varies by tour: They can last from about 2.5 hours to eight hours or more.

Fees vary based on tour, activity duration and departure point. For short tours, expect tickets to start at $50 for adults and $25 for children. Daylong tours cost about $110 for adults and $55 for children.

Recent Reviews

Tour-takers commented that the bus is a great way to see the park. They added that it's much more relaxing than driving yourself, but note that seating can be a bit cramped. Many travelers also complimented the guides for their great driving and informative commentary. Others warn that you will need to book tickets well in advance as tours sell out quickly.

Note: There are no physical nor virtual tickets for the tour. You will check in for your tour at your pickup point's front desk or concierge desk at least 15 minutes before the tour departs. For schedules and to purchase tickets, visit the Glacier National Park Lodges' website .

#1 Going-to-the-Sun Road

U.S. News Insider Tip: Grab your coffee to go and drive up Going-to-the-Sun Road at dawn. It's magical to witness the majestic alpenglow on Glacier National Park's mountain peaks as the sun rises. It's also your best chance to see wildlife before the road becomes too busy. – Kelsey J. Lawrence

Going-to-the-Sun Road is a paved, two-lane highway that snakes through Glacier National Park, dividing the park into east and west regions and crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass . One of the most spectacular scenic drives in America, this road is both a National Historic Landmark and a Civil Engineering Landmark and passes by almost every type of terrain the park offers, from glacial lakes, waterfalls and cedar forests to alpine peaks.

Things to Do on the West Side of Glacier National Park

western alpine tour review

Planning a trip to Glacier National Park? The first thing you’ll find out is that folks love to argue over whether the east side or the west side is better.

Our opinion? No one should have to choose! It’s a mere two hour drive from the west gate to the east gate, and we highly recommend choosing a base camp on both sides. We stayed at the West Glacier KOA during our time on the west side, and loved the location and amenities. You can read a complete review of the campground here . You can also read or listen to our tips for planning your trip here and packing for Glacier here .

Here’s a list of our favorite things to do on the west side of Glacier National Park…

For all hikes, we highly recommend using the AllTrails: Hike, Bike, and Run app, Pro Version to research trail information.

10 Amazing Things to Do on the West Side of Glacier National Park

Take the western alpine red bus tour.

western alpine tour review

This is a 3-hour Red Bus Tour that covers Going-to-the-Sun Road from the West entrance to Logan Pass. We took the corresponding 3-hour Alpine tour on the East side of the park, and to be honest, we liked that one better. So if you will be on both sides of the park, save the Red Bus tour for the East side. However, if you are only staying on the West side, you do not want to miss this experience. Driving in these historical vehicles, with the canvas roof rolled back, is simply a divine experience.

Hike to Avalanche Lake via the Trail of Cedars

western alpine tour review

This is one of the easier hikes in all of Glacier, yet the payoff views at Avalanche Lake are as stunning as anything in the park. It’s a 5-mile round trip hike without a lot of elevation gain. The boys jumped into Avalanche Lake (BRRRR!!!) and we spotted a black bear across the lake. The first part of the hike is the Trail of Cedars, an accessible boardwalk hike. Get there early to park at the crowded trailhead, or take a shuttle from the visitor center.

Visit Lake McDonald Lodge

This is definitely a hub for visitors on the west side with gift shops, restaurants, boat rentals, and horseback riding stables. So many of the things to do on the west side of Glacier can be found here. The lodge has a gorgeous lobby, and you’ll want to relax and play a game of chess by the fire. You can also get a cocktail and enjoy it in Lucke’s Lounge or on a patio rocking chair. Russell’s Fireside Dining room is a more formal atmosphere with both buffet and ala carte menu items. Kids will want to dip their feet in the cold water, or jump in if they are crazy like ours.

Eat Lunch at Jammer Joe’s Grill and Pizzeria

We did not have high hopes for this place, but after a hike to Avalanche Lake, we were famished. Well, it turned out to be our kids’ favorite food stop in all of Glacier National Park. The all you can eat pizza and salad bar was better than it sounds. The kids loved the dessert options and soda fountain as well. There was also some local beer options on tap. Best of all, our family of five ate for about $50 which was spectacular for Glacier food prices.

Visit Apgar Village

Located just up the road from the Apgar Visitor Center on the shores of Lake McDonald, Apgar Village has affordable kayak and SUP rentals. We think these might be some of the prettiest views on the entire lake.

Eat at Eddie’s Cafe and Mercantile

Eddie’s Cafe had friendly service, delicious food, and a charming atmosphere. It was the perfect way to fuel up after a paddle.

Go Horseback Riding at Apgar Stables

western alpine tour review

Swan Mountain Outfitters is the concessionaire that runs all the stables in Glacier National Park. I convinced my older two boys to go horseback riding for the first time, and Swan Mountain Outfitters did such a great job of getting them acclimated to the horses. They have many different options including full day rides, but I loved that they offered one hour tours. Our guide admitted that her favorite trail ride was the all-day excursion to the Sperry Chalet that leaves from Lake McDonald.

Lake McDonald Boat Ride

The Glacier Park Boat Company has been operating Glacier National Park since 1938. The classic boats are a wonderful part of this national park’s history. Boat tours are $18 for adults and $9.25 for kids. A few boat rides a day include an onboard park ranger talk. The other tours will host an onboard naturalist who will interpret the land around Lake McDonald.

Drive into Whitefish

The famous ski resort town is just about 30 minutes from the West Glacier KOA, and it was a fun break from all of the physical activity in the park. There are great gift shops, book stores, and coffee shops in town. We ate dinner at the Great Northern Brewery , and the food was better than we expected. We had to order a second round of nachos and hot pretzels. The Huckleberry Beer was a special local treat.

Head out to the Polebridge Bakery

We had to take the 45 minute drive out to the Polebridge Bakery just to find out what all the fuss was about. We took advantage of a rainy morning, and the Bear Claw pastries did not disappoint. Someone might have also grabbed a dozen cookies to go. This is a great place to find some local artisan souvenirs if you have any money left over from the NPS gift shops.

Make sure you also check out our recommendations for things to do on the east side of Glacier National Park ! And if you are just getting started planning your trip, read our Tips for Planning a Trip to Glacier National Park and our Packing Tips for Glacier National Park .

Many in the current fleet of Red Buses have been in service since the mid-1930s. The Red Buses were the first authorized motor transportation utility in any National Park.

I booked two tours since I was pressed to book something at the time. 1st time to GPS and only there for 3 (possibly 4) days. Help!! TIA

' class=

It all depends on where you are staying and on what day of your trip.

I am heading to GNP in July 021 and staying at the Glacier Park Lodge and so booked the Big Sky Circle tour for the first full day of my trip.

We are staying by the west entrance the first night and booked the Alpine the next morning. We are staying on at the St. Mary's entrance the day we booked the Big Sky Circle. So are you saying if we take the tour on the west, we could potentially drive the GTTSR after the tour in the afternoon? We have an entry ticket but not until the last full day of our trip

However, please confirm with the Red Bus.
