EXCITING AND UNIQUE ADVENTURES!

Mathew was an amazing guide!! He went out of his way to make the trip meaningful, exciting, and unique. He was so knowledgeable about the Alaska, having lived here for 30 years and we were able to see so many different kinds of wildlife!! I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to experience a soulful, spiritual, lovely Alaskan nature and wildlife experience!

What can I say?! From the amazing tour guides (Matt & Chris) one WILL NOT be disappointed or have a lack of a great experience! Anchorage has so much natural beauty to offer paired with very kind and knowledgeable tour guides that offer nothing but the best!

It was easy to book online and the afternoon was jam packed with awesome stops. Matt is super knowledge and friendly! Best way to spend your afternoon while getting to see so much that Anchorage has to offer. One of the coolest parts for me was the Wildlife Conservation Center - we got there at feeding time and really got to see the animals up close.

Amazing trip. I messed up on the date. 100% my fault. I showed up and the lovely women at the visitors center called the owner, who immediately tried to make it right. Thank you Chris for that amazing 1:1 tour….even if we only saw the “Queen” moose for a second 🤣

It’s no wonder this Glacier and Wildlife Day Tour is so popular among visitors looking for a well-rounded tour of Anchorage. A Portage Glacier cruise and guided visit at the native wildlife sanctuary makes this family-friendly adventure a day to remember! Enjoy panoramic views above Anchorage as you travel along the Seward Highway, recognized as a National Scenic Byway, before arriving at your Portage Glacier cruise.

Portage is one of the closest glaciers to Anchorage, and it stands out at ten stories tall! It’s receding about 20-feet per year, so don’t miss your chance to experience this magnificent glacier up close! Take in the awe-inspiring views and listen to stories of the area’s geology, wildlife, and history by Forest Service Rangers. Relax in the boat’s heated cabin with big viewing windows or head up to the topside deck for unobstructed views. The boat gets 300-yards from the icy blue face, so make sure you bring your camera for great photos! If you’re lucky, you might even witness calving as chunks of ice break off and fall into the lake. It’s an unforgettable sight to see!

The adventure isn’t over yet on your Glacier and Wildlife Day Tour! After your time on the water, enjoy a scenic lunch stop at The Portage Glacier Lodge (lunch not included in tour price). Then, it’s time to head to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center! At this incredible rehabilitation center for injured as well as orphaned big game, a 90-minute tour offers you the unique opportunity to get up close to Alaska’s native wildlife. Choose to ride in the van, walk, or switch back and forth to view these amazing animals from their enclosures. You are likely to see many of the rescued animals during your visit which includes black and brown bears, moose, caribou, wolves, musk ox, lynx, wood bison, and more!

This tour of Anchorage is fun for the whole family and includes pick up as well as drop-off from downtown. Your friendly and knowledgeable local guides can’t wait to share their backyard playground with you on this Glacier and Wildlife Day Tour! If you’re looking for a more active tour of Anchorage then we recommend the Matanuska Glacier Hike Day Tour ! Or, for those interested in this tour without the Portage Glacier cruise, join the Alaska Wildlife Day Tour .

What is provided? What should I bring/wear?

Answer: Hotel pickup, roundtrip transportation, and friendly local guides are included! You are welcome to bring a bag with whatever snacks and beverages you'd like. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle. Summer temperatures range from mid 50's to 70's F and warmer, but you should always be prepared for rain and wind. Dressing in layers is the key to comfort, with a water-resistant jacket. Wear comfortable shoes. It is also a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

How much walking is required?

Answer: It is about one block of walking on flat terrain from the van to the boat for your Portage Glacier cruise. At the wildlife sanctuary, the walking path is about 1.5 miles but you are welcome to ride in the van as we are able to pull right up to the enclosures. The Mercedes Sprinter van has large windows but you can get out for a closer view if you'd like, the van is always accessible.

How long is the boat ride at Portage Lake? What kind of boat is it?

Answer: You will be cruising on the mv Ptarmigan, an 80' vessel built on site at Portage Lake to U.S. Coast Guard specifications. The boat has a fully enclosed, heated cabin with expansive windows and an open-air top deck for even better viewing. The boat has a capacity of 200 people. You'll spend one-hour on the water as you travel across the lake to the face of Portage Glacier and back. It takes about 15-minutes to get across the lake, with about 30-minutes of time spent at the face of the glacier.

What food options are available at the Portage Glacier Lodge?

Answer: The Portage Glacier Lodge has a variety of lunch items (salad, sandwiches, chowder, rice bowls, burgers) for purchase in the $10 range.

Are restrooms available?

Answer: There are two bathrooms on the boat, a bathroom at the Portage Glacier Lodge (lunch stop), and at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

What if the weather is bad?

Answer: This tour operates rain or shine and is very rarely canceled due to weather. If the tour is canceled, we will refund you or if you prefer, reschedule you for a different day.

I have an infant under two-years-old, can I bring them on the tour?

Answer: We do not charge for infants if we have room on the tour for them. Anyone occupying a seat pays the adult price. Guests who want to bring infants are required to let us know ahead of time (to make sure the tour has space). You will need to provide an approved child safety seat. Please contact us for more information.

Two Orcas breaching the water

Welcome to Valdez and Prince William Sound

Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises respectfully acknowledges that we live, work, and operate on the traditional land of the Alaska Native Alutiiq/Sugpiaq peoples. It is because of their stewardship that we are able to share the wonders of Prince William Sound today.

The traditional name of this area in Sugt’stun, the language of the Sugpiaq, is Suacit, which means, “the people of the place that rises into view.” Suacit and the surrounding Prince William Sound villages provided a bountiful harvest for the Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people. We strive to respect the traditional lands and waterways as we operate. We encourage our guests to take time to learn about the history of our region’s Alaska Native people and their living culture.

Home » Tours » Wildlife » Marine Wildlife

One of the delightful things about visiting Alaska is that you get SO much more than you bargained for. You might be on a glacier cruise, for example, but later realize you were also on a wildlife cruise due to the incredible amount of Alaska marine life passed by while you were on the way to that glacier. Alaska’s marine life will astound and delight you, from rolling orcas to breaching gray whales, from lolling sea lions to curious harbor seals and sea otters. Bring that camera and take back the memory of a lifetime!

Add to My Trip

The cruise begins as captain and crew welcome passengers onto their triple-deck catamaran and show them to their assigned seats in one of two indoor cabins. The setup gives passengers a spot to store their items and a warm place to return to after spending time in the brisk ocean air of the exterior decks.

Board a triple-deck catamaran with panoramic views.

Those decks provide panoramic views as the boat cruises through Resurrection Bay. When crew and passengers spot wildlife, the captain slows and maneuvers at a safe distance to give everyone a chance to see. Depending on the season and the day, it may be Dall's porpoises or otters playing in boat wake, seabirds of every variety diving from cliffside nests, or orcas gliding just below the water surface. The boat's captain narrates the experience throughout.

After dipping into the Gulf of Alaska, the boat rounds Aialik Cape and heads north into the calmer waters of Aialik Bay. Here, guests enjoy a deli lunch as the boat nears and then idles alongside one of the massive tidewater glaciers within Kenai Fjords National Park . These rivers of ice cascade dramatically from jagged mountainsides, their massive faces shedding car-sized chunks of ice into the water with thunderous claps. Passengers will spend as much as an hour in this dramatic setting before heading back toward the Gulf of Alaska on the return trip to Seward.

This Kenai Fjords National Park Glacier & Wildlife Cruise offers three departures. The 8 AM and 11:30 AM departures are six hours long. The 9:30 AM departure tour is 7.5 hours long. The earlier departures works well for guests already in Seward, while the later departure fits for guests arriving into Seward that same morning by train or Park Connection Motorcoach .

The tour boat has three exterior decks and two indoor cabin levels with fog-resistant windows. No smoking is allowed on the boat. Passengers are assigned seats when boarding but can carefully move throughout the boat while underway. Children are encouraged to enjoy educational games and activities as part of the Junior Ranger Program.

A deli lunch with turkey sandwich, chips, granola bar, brownie, and soft drink is served on board. A vegan/vegetarian lunch option is available and must be requested in advance. Additional snacks, hot and cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

What to Bring

To make the most of views and fresh air on the exterior decks, it is important to dress in layers for this tour. Bring a rain jacket, hat, and gloves, and wear warm base layers and rubber-soled shoes. Even on a sunny day, the air coming off a glacier can be quite chilly. Be sure to bring a camera and binoculars. If seasickness is a concern, err on the side of caution and take motion sickness medicine in advance. Dramamine, Bonine, and ginger chews are available for purchase onboard.

Special Instructions

Check in at the boat tour office located in the Harbor 360 Hotel. The tour office provides luggage storage if needed.

Transfers & Meeting Points

--- for on-board, I'd forget about needing/using it (& I'm as big an internet addict that there is).

Phone unlocked?

- if your phone is unlocked, I'd buy a month of an AT&T prepaid plan. They have plans that include free roaming in Canada & Mexico (you need to check the fine print to verify the plans that do include Canda & Mexico)..

- This would likely cover your 'needs' for on land, and when near a port.

see: https://www.att.com/prepaid/

No, not much reliable wi-fi in ports.

you can buy x minutes on board - but since its at sea - sometimes unreliable even then.

In Haines you can get WiFi free at the library......it's open 7 days a week

But do you really want to spend your brief time in port tracking down the free wifi and using it?

Wildlife Viewing

Anchorage is the best place to see Alaska animals. Wildlife viewing here is as close as the  moose  that munch through the city. It means a flight to watch  bears  fishing by the falls and a day cruise to get up close with  whales , puffins and otters. Millions of  birds flock to Anchorage  on annual migrations, and  salmon  fill nearby rivers and streams all summer long.

Not sure where to start? Experienced guides and exceptional tours seek out the species on everyone’s “must-see” list, from polar bear tours above the Arctic Circle to sights of wolves and caribou in Denali National Park.

Watch for birds, moose, occasional bears, and other animals in the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge: Head to Potter Marsh , Kincaid Park , or Carr-Gottstein Park for easy refuge access and awe-inspiring views. For a different kind of experience, get closer than you ever thought possible with guaranteed sightings at the Alaska Zoo or Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center . Special programs offer additional opportunities to encounter animals: Try the Zoo’s Early Bird Breakfast Tour or Wild VIP Zoo Experience, or go behind the scenes with the AWCC’s popular Bear Encounter or Walk on the Wild Side Tour.

Airports will be packed this summer. That makes finding good direct flights even more valuable for Alaska travelers.

Traveler Michael Ricchiuti waits in Salt Lake City International Airport after his flight was canceled by snow Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, in Salt Lake City. Brutal winter weather hammered the northern U.S. Wednesday with "whiteout" snow, dangerous wind gusts and bitter cold, shutting down roadways, closing schools and businesses and prompting dire warnings for people to stay home. The summer travel season is upon us. Cruise ships are sailing into ports and RVs are on the road.

The common denominator of these events is crowds. As the days get longer, the crowds get bigger on the tour boats, bigger at hotel lobbies and bigger at the airport. And if you’re concerned about the crowds here at the Anchorage airport, just wait until you get to Seattle.

Seattle is a crucial connecting airport for Alaskans traveling around the world. But the summertime crowds are going to be massive. Smart travelers look at nonstop flights to avoid problems along the way, including delays, lost luggage and weather cancellations.

Many travelers have booked their peak-season flights already. But things come up and plans change. If you’re in the market for a flight Outside this summer, let’s review who’s flying nonstop flights where — and how much it costs to get a ticket.

International flights

Anchorage-Vancouver on Air Canada. The airline offers one flight per day, leaving at 4:55 p.m. The flights start this weekend and run through Sept. 30, 2024. For most of the summer, the one-way fare is $421. Fares are subject to change without notice. Air Canada is a member of the Star Alliance group, which includes United Airlines. Travelers can earn and burn their MileagePlus points on these flights.

Anchorage-Frankfurt on Discover Airlines. Discover also is a member of the Star Alliance airline group, so you can use your MileagePlus points. Discover offers two nonstops per week (Tuesdays and Saturdays) from Anchorage, starting on June 8. Prices start at $799 roundtrip. Book at United.com .

Anchorage-Frankfurt on Condor Airlines. Condor’s first flight of the season is this weekend. For the next three weeks, Condor will fly twice each week on Thursdays and Saturdays. Starting June 11, Condor boosts its schedule to three times weekly, adding a Tuesday flight. Fly for $670 roundtrip through June 20, before prices go up. Travelers can earn and burn Alaska Air miles with Condor.

Mileage tickets between Anchorage and Frankfurt on Condor start at 27,500 miles each way. But there are extra fees: $49 for the outbound flight to Frankfurt and $193 per person for the return flight.

Anchorage-Seattle/Everett on Alaska Air. Alaska has resumed its daily Anchorage-Paine Field nonstop for the summer. The airline uses Horizon Air to fly the route on one of its E175 2x2 aircraft (no middle seats). There are a few dates in June (7-12) where you can get a $119 one-way fare. After that, most days are available for $167 one-way on the southbound flight ($169 one-way northbound).

Anchorage-Seattle/Tacoma. Alaska Air’s schedule to Seattle from Anchorage is impressive: 18-21 flights per day. To get the best rate of $167 one-way (Saver), plan on buying your tickets at least 21 days in advance. It’s an extra $35 each way to get a Main cabin ticket. Same seat, but you can pick it out in advance and earn full Mileage Plan credit.

Delta is offering six flights every day to Seattle. The cheap seats are priced the same: $167 one-way. It’s $30 more to get Main for advance seat assignments and full SkyMiles credit. But for $50 more ($217 one-way), you can get Comfort+ with a little extra legroom.

Anchorage-Portland on Alaska Air. Travelers can choose from three departures each day from Anchorage. Two of the flights are on Horizon’s E175s. Again, I’m partial to these aircraft because there’s no middle seat in coach. In first class, there’s just one seat on the left side, with two on the right. Saver tickets start at $177 one-way, with Main cabin seats for $35 more each way.

Anchorage-San Francisco. Daily nonstops on Alaska are available for $197 one-way for Saver seats, with a 21-day advance purchase. Add $40 each way for Main. The seasonal nonstops operate through Sept. 30.

United’s nonstop Anchorage-San Francisco flights resume on May 23. Pricing for Basic Economy is $197 one-way. Add $40 one-way for Economy so you can carry aboard a rolling bag or other in-cabin item.

Anchorage-Los Angeles/LAX on Alaska Airlines. The airline offers a daily red-eye flight from Anchorage, starting at $197 one-way. You must purchase your ticket 21 days in advance to get that price on the southbound flight. Northbound flights are more in the summer, from $341 one-way (Saver).

Anchorage-San Diego on Alaska Airlines. This is a new route for the airline, which operates once per week on Saturdays between now and Sept. 28. Plan ahead and get tickets for as little as $219 one-way (Saver).

Mountain states

Anchorage-Las Vegas on Alaska Airlines. Twice-a-week nonstop service is available on Fridays and Sundays. Plan ahead and get tickets for $197 one-way (Saver).

Anchorage-Phoenix on Alaska Airlines. Daily service is available all the way through the summer until Aug. 19, when Alaska reverts to four-times-weekly service. Tickets in mid-June are available for as little as $187 one-way (Saver). Northbound tickets cost more, but some late-June dates are available for $199-221 one-way.

Anchorage-Salt Lake City. Delta and Alaska Airlines resume their seasonal flights this weekend with three-times-weekly service on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. After June 10, Delta adds two more days: Thursdays and Mondays. One-way tickets sell for about $217, with a 21-day advance purchase.

Anchorage-Denver. United flies the route year-round. Alaska has resumed its seasonal nonstop flights, through Sept. 28. On May 23, United adds a second daily nonstop. Plan ahead and tickets are available for $187 one-way southbound. Northbound tickets cost more, from $189-$289 one-way in late June.

Midwestern states

Anchorage-Minneapolis. This is the most competitive destination, with three airlines vying for customers. Early-season flights on Sun Country Airlines are the cheapest: $119 one-way, starting May 25 for southbound flights. Flying north costs more: from $179 one-way.

Alaska Airlines starts seasonal service to the Twin Cities this weekend with three flights per week: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On June 13, Alaska starts daily flights, from $219 one-way.

Delta flies nonstop year-round, with prices starting at about $210 one-way.

Anchorage-Chicago. In the height of the summer season, three airlines also fly this route: American, Alaska and United. Starting next month, both United and Alaska add an additional flight, offering two each day. All three carriers offer basic economy tickets at about $195 one-way.

Anchorage-Dallas. American has resumed its nonstop flights for the summer, currently scheduled all the way through Jan. 6, 2025. On June 6, American adds a second daily flight, which will fly through Sept. 2. Prices are super-high through most of June and really do not mellow out until June 25, when you can get a basic economy ticket for $548 roundtrip.

Anchorage-Houston on United Airlines. United’s seasonal daily flight resumes on May 23. Prices are high, even with advance notice: from $741 roundtrip starting June 13.

Eastern states

Anchorage-Detroit on Delta. Starting June 7, Delta will operate three flights each week, Friday-Sunday. Prices are high, starting at $717 roundtrip.

Anchorage-Atlanta on Delta. Starting May 23, Delta resumes its daily Anchorage-Atlanta nonstop flights. Prices are super-high, from $1,117 roundtrip.

Anchorage-New York/JFK. This is a new route for Alaska Airlines — the longest in its system. Nonstop flights start on June 13 and are priced starting at $551 roundtrip.

Anchorage-Newark on United. Seasonal nonstops from Anchorage to Newark resume May 23, priced from $571 roundtrip (departing June 7).

Anchorage-Washington, DC/Dulles on United. This is a new flight for United. Dulles is a big hub for the airline. Seasonal daily service starts May 23. Plan ahead to get roundtrip tickets for $741 (departing June 7).

Alaska Airlines drops its nonstop flights from Anchorage to Maui and Kona. But Anchorage-Honolulu continues to operate each day. Flights in June are available for $197 one-way going south. Flying north costs more: from $279 one-way.

There are fewer nonstop flights between Fairbanks and the Lower 48, but they’re important.

Fairbanks-Seattle: Delta has two daily flights and Alaska has five daily flights, starting at $179 one-way.

Fairbanks-Denver: United offers daily flights, starting May 23. from $291 one-way.

Fairbanks-Minneapolis: Starting June 7, Delta will fly each day to Minneapolis, starting at $479 roundtrip.

Fairbanks-Chicago: United’s daily flights are scheduled through Sept. 25. Prices start at $573 roundtrip.

All fares (and schedules) are subject to change without notice. Sources: Google.com/flights , Alaskaair.com , Delta.com
