Tips for Winter Treks or Snow Trekking in India

Snow Trekking in Summers or Winter Snow treks are most rewarding and enjoyable experiences, but it is very important to be well-prepared and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. Here are some tips for trekking for snow treks:

  • Never do solo winter trek:  Always try to go in a group with local experienced guide for snow treks. As trekking route may not be visible due to snow, so local guide can help you during the trek.
  • Book with authentic company: Always book the winter/snow trek in advance with registered and experiened trekking company, which has local guides.
  • Always Dress in layers:  Wear multiple layers of clothing to help regulate your body temperature and stay warm. Use a base layer made of moisture-wicking material to keep your skin dry, a middle layer for insulation, and an outer layer that is wind and water-resistant.
  • Protect your body parts from Cold: Keep your hands, feet, and head warm with gloves, socks, and a hat. Choose clothing and gear that is specifically designed for cold weather.
  • Stay hydrated : It is important to drink plenty of water, even in cold weather. Dehydration can be a problem, especially if you are sweating under all your layers of clothing.
  • Weather forecast: Check the weather forecast before your trek and plan accordingly. Make sure you have the right gear and clothing for the conditions you will be facing.
  • Use trekking poles, Gaiters, Spikes: Trekking poles can help you maintain balance and stability on slippery or uneven terrain. They can also help reduce the strain on your legs and knees. Gaiters and Spikes for shoes are optional and will be useful when there is more 2 feet of snow on the trail.
  • Take small breaks during trek: It is important to take small breaks to rest and warm up, especially if you are feeling cold or tired. Find a sheltered spot out of the wind, and take the time to eat a snack and drink some water.
  • Stay safe: Always let someone know your route and expected return time, and carry a first-aid kit and a communication device (such as a phone or radio) in case of an emergency.

Snowfall is the key reason why trekkers visit Himalayas during winters. The view changes drastically and its pure bliss. The sunsets are magical and bonfire discussion adds up to the beauty. Only easy and short treks remains open during winter season but do not go gentle. The temperature dips to around -10 degree celcius above 3000mtr of altitude and it takes more time to traverse the trail.

The Breathtaking Views from Kuari Pass

The main attraction of the trek, of course, is standing atop Kuari Pass. From the pass, you get an unrivalled view of the Himalayan Ranges that encircle you all around. The Dronagiri Parvat is the most prominent along with Hathi and Gauri Parvat, Nanda Devi and several other Himalayan peaks.

Winter Kuari Pass Trek Informative Video

Suitable for Beginners

While the views from Kuari Pass rival those from more challenging treks, the trail itself is relatively accessible, making it an excellent choice for novice trekkers. The well-defined path and gradual elevation gain provide an ideal introduction to high-altitude trekking.

Varied Terrains

The trek offers a diverse range of landscapes, from dense rhododendron forests to open meadows and high-altitude alpine zones. This variety keeps the trek interesting and engaging for trekkers who appreciate the changing scenery.

Sunset Views

The sunset view on this trek is unlike any other. Witness the last rays of the sun casting a golden glow over the Dronagiri Parvat making it appear as made of molten gold. It is such a surreal sight to watch and will last in your memory forever.

A Scenic Descent

As we descend through the route via Gorson Bugyal and Auli, the view of Mt. Nanda Devi becomes prominent. You get close-up views of the tallest mountain in India, which is a wonderful experience. Also, you will descend via the vast Gorson Bugyal - a snowy expanse surrounded by high mountains and the charming snow-draped town of Auli. Keep your cameras on the ready as the views are simply mesmerizing.

Rishikesh to Pipalkoti

You will begin your journey with us from Rishikesh. Starting the drive from Rishikesh from the appointed pickup point (Rishikesh TTH office), we will take the fabled Badrinath Road.

If you are enthusiastic about cultural sightseeing and adventure water sports, you may like to arrange a brief stay at Rishikesh.

The 9 hour drive to Pipalkoti will surely be long and arduous, but you are never going to run out of mesmerizing views. The great river running with us on parallel will get wilder and more fascinating as we trudge uphill. We will be passing by the panchprayag or the five holy confluences of Ganga—Devaprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Vishnuprayag.

So, keep your cameras on the ready and remain awake for most of the journey!

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-1

Pipalkoti – Gulling Top

A host of ice peaks will greet us at Joshimath. After an early breakfast on this day, we will head off to Dhak village in the Joshimath tehsil, a rocky drive of 1:45 minutes. From here our trek will commence. Look out for the gentle slopes of the Sleeping Lady Mountain of Joshimath on this drive. The gentle ups and downs of this mountain seem to form an outline of a lying lady.

The trek flags off from Dhak along a steady ascent. The dirt trail steers away from the main road and rises towards Tugasi village. There are a couple of sharp T-turns on this trail after which the walk takes place on a level ground followed by gradually ascending soft slopes. The terrain is mostly rough here. Leaving out the terrace farming lands, there is no affluence of greenery, but offers a sweeping view of the Garhwal frontier all around. Look out especially for the bright silvery sun-dazed stream of Dhauli-Ganga snaking it way in the abyss, and the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station. You are not likely to find any snow in this zone.

Twenty to twenty-five minutes into the trek, you will be reaching village Kharchi, where you can fill your bottles and take some rest. The trail continues from the village on the same rocky path, keeping the valley to the left. The ascent id steep and encounters a couple of switchback turns, finally reaching the Lower Tugasi area. You can find the trail forking into two here and must take the one curving along a hydro run flour mill. Approximately 10 minutes from here you will reach the Upper Tugasi region, marked with a handful of wheat fields, flower beds, and thatched roofed huts. You can also find little streams coming down in this area.

Continue on this path, maintaining a steep climb, leaving the farmland behind and you will find the awe-inspiring sight of Dronagiri peak hauntingly rising at a distance. We will be pitching tents in the open meadows overlooking Dronagiri and fringed around with oak forests.

You can ask your trek leader to take you on an acclimatization walk to Gulling Top point this afternoon to enjoy the snow laden forests in your own way. Also, brace up for a mesmerizing vista of the Dronagiri peak caught in the shimmer of morning light from this camp site the next dawn.

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-2

Gulling Top to Tali Forest Camp

Wake up in time next morning to start on a 5 hour journey deeper into the forest of Talli. After the exacting climb of last day, the trek today will be less arduous. The gradients of ascent is relatively smooth and will allow you an enjoyable hike.

Twenty minutes into the trek, you will come to a green clearing overlooking the magnificent snow peaks. After a few moments of rest, the climb must continue crossing a little stream to enter a mixed forest slowly thickening with oaks and rhododendrons. If you are coming in late March you might still find some white and pink blossoms. Except for rhododendrons, you can find walnut and some other varieties of conifers here.

At the height of winter’s splendour, you can find everything in the forest coated with a cover of snow. In the thickening snow, light, and shade of the conifer forests of Gulling, your second camp on the trek will be pitched.

Along this path, the Hathi-Ghori peaks will be manifesting gloriously along with Dronagiri now somewhat flipped to the side.

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-3

Tali forest camp to Kuari pass and back via Khullara top

Fourth day is the summit day, likely to span 10-11 hours depending on the group’s pace. You need to gear up appropriately for high snow and squalling wind on the ridges today. There is going to be no water source found on the way today,so carry enough to sustain you through.

In the first phase, the trek will move up to the Khullara top—a moderate ascent of 3.5 km. You will need to traverse a broken bridge and a stream frozen at the heights of winter, followed by a ridge climb to the high pass, severely strenuous and made more challenging with the snow. Every 15 minutes, you are welcome to take a break and catch your breath. At Jhandi Dhar, a suitable rest point 2 hours into the trek, you can afford a long break. Lunch will be had on the way or after reaching the temple at the base of the Kuari high pass.

Make sure to crampon your shoes properly. Trek the Himalayas will provide you good quality crampons and  gaiters.

The climax of this trek comes with a visual bang exposing a host of Garhwal behemoth peaks, unveiling—Kedarnath Peak, Kedardome, Chaukhambha, Balakun, Neel Kantha, Mukut Parvat, Kamet, Abhi Gamin, Mana I, Ghori Parvat, Hathi Parvat, Dronagiri, Kalanka, Changabang, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti.

The magnificence of this vision is incomparable.

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-4

Tali forest camp - Pipalkoti via Gurson bugyal (11150 ft) and Auli (9680 ft)

Today we will advance towards Auli—the skiing capital of India, and one of the most famous in south Asia. Exploring the beautiful snow-patched rolling valleys of Gorson Bugyal, we will come down to Auli through a sweetly enjoyable journey.

Traversing the Bugyals of Gorson is completely free of any arduous and hassling climb, mainly on a smoothly rolling terrain, though the snow of high winter might leave the place a tad desolate. In the thaw season of March, skiing is a big activity here.

Please be advised that the cable car ride to Pipalkoti is not included in the trek package. However, trekkers have the option to experience the scenic cable car ride at their own expense upon reaching Auli. The cable car journey offers breathtaking vistas of the majestic ski resort, the gently sloping snow-covered slopes, and the captivating pine forests.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

  • Stay at Rishikesh: INR 1,500 for a private room.
  • Taxi Charges and Miscellaneous: INR 2,000.

Total – INR 27109 per person.

Is there any Wildlife on the Trail?

Indeed, the trail boasts abundant wildlife encounters. We had a thrilling encounter with a bear during our last trekking day. While the bear pursued one of our fellow trekkers, our group’s unity and loud presence deterred the bear, prompting it to retreat with a formidable roar.

Additionally, at the Thilandi campsite, we were treated to the majestic sight of a Himalayan Griffon vulture , adding a fascinating touch to our adventure.

How are the Toilets at the Campsites and on the Trails?

Dry toilets are utilized at the campsites, featuring a pit covered by standing tents. Instead of water, sand dust is used to cover waste, with strict instructions to avoid water or wet tissues, relying solely on toilet paper.

During the trails, nature serves as the restroom, with the wild behind the trees serving as facilities. While this lack of commercialization preserves the trail’s natural charm, it also means no tea houses or toilets along the way.

How was the food provided by India Hikes?

The food experience during the trek was truly outstanding, and it was one of the main reasons I chose India Hikes for this journey. Every meal was served fresh and piping hot, leaving a lasting impression. A highlight of the culinary delights was when we were treated to hot and delicious gulab jamuns at the Brahmatal campsite.

What was the Paperwork Required?

The Brahmatal trek necessitated some paperwork to be completed before the journey:

  • Medical Certificate: Signed by a physician, detailing any pre-existing medical conditions and blood pressure readings.
  • Waiver Form: Signed by all participants, acknowledging the risks involved in the trek.
  • Proof of COVID Vaccination: Certifying completion of both vaccine doses.
  • Proof of Identification: Valid ID for verification purposes.
  • Pre-filled Interstate COVID Pass : Required by the Uttarakhand government for entry into the state.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s imperative to consult your doctor before embarking on the trek.

Lessons Learned

  • When opting for interstate buses, it’s advisable to choose government-operated services for their reliability and minimal risk of cancellations. For travel to Uttarakhand, consider utilizing the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses.
  • For flights, complete the pre-check-in process and have all necessary documents readily available. Given the rapidly changing circumstances, stay updated on interstate travel regulations.
  • Select dry-fit clothing for the trek, and prioritize trek pants with pockets for conveniently stashing your phone and trail snacks.
  • Layering clothing allows for easy adjustment to changing temperatures during the trek.
  • Even with a rain cover for your backpack, safeguard your clothes and electronics by storing them in additional carry bags for extra protection.
  • Pack one or two pairs of warm socks specifically for the chilly nights.
  • Consider bringing hand warmers for comfort in cold conditions, readily available at stores like Decathlon.
  • Include extra shoe laces in your gear for unforeseen circumstances.
  • If you lack adequate gear, consider renting high-quality equipment from the trekking agency.
  • Carry some cash for purchasing refreshments at dhabas along the trail.
  • Keep headlamps easily accessible for navigating in low-light conditions.
  • Trekking poles offer valuable support and stability during the trek.
  • Maintain a steady and cautious pace on the trail, prioritizing safety over speed and taking small, deliberate steps.

How to Get to Rishikesh?

Rishikesh does not have an airport; the nearest one is in Dehradun. If you’re travelling solo, I recommend flying to Dehradun and taking a bus to Rishikesh. Indigo and Air Vistara are two airline providers that operate flights between major cities and Delhi/Dehradun.

The distance from Dehradun to Rishikesh is approximately 50 kilometres, with a travel time of about an hour by road.

From Delhi to Rishikesh, the distance is roughly 250 kilometres, and the journey typically takes 4 to 5 hours by car.

By Public Transport

The most reliable way to travel from Delhi to Rishikesh is by bus, with the journey typically taking around 5 hours by road.

Avoid booking private buses, as they often cancel at the last minute. I experienced this firsthand when a bus scheduled to depart at 8 PM was cancelled at 6:30 PM. Left without alternative transportation, I had to settle for a local red-coloured bus with uncomfortable seats.

For those travelling between Dehradun and Delhi, numerous frequent buses are available, lasting just over an hour.

Refer to the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation for buses.

Travelers can take a train from Delhi to Haridwar, where they can transfer to a bus bound for Rishikesh.

Similarly, one can catch a train from Dehradun to Haridwar and then continue to Rishikesh. This entire journey typically lasts around 3 hours and 30 minutes.

For the latest train schedules and information, it’s advisable to consult the IRCTC website.

Is Brahmatal Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

Generally, trekking is safest with a trekking buddy or through a reputable trekking agency. I highly recommend against attempting this trek independently or even with your group without the assistance of a local guide. The trekking agency I chose was particularly adept at catering to solo female trekkers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

Closing Notes

Trekking in the Himalayas becomes an addiction, with each journey leaving an indelible mark on your soul. The breathtaking scenery, the camaraderie shared with fellow trekkers, the awe-inspiring starry nights, the serene snow-covered landscapes, and the endearing mountain dogs all create unforgettable memories that linger long after the trek ends. It’s no wonder you yearn to return and relive those precious moments.

I have visited this place last year its really awesome trek.

Kedarkantha Summit- Winter Trek in Uttarakhand Himalayas

Journey Begins: Road to Wonderland

Those who have done a winter trek before or those who are planning one have one thing in common – the love for the pristine white snow, a wonderland indeed! The Kedarkantha trek in winter presents just the right opportunity to seasoned and novice trekkers alike for an epic journey into the snow world of the grand Himalayan landscape.

kedarkantha trek route map

The bonus for adding winter Kedarkantha is that you get to attempt a summit trek, an achievement in itself! The rewards are bountiful – a feather to your trekking hat and also the 360-degree view of a number of legendary mountain ranges like Gangotri, Yamunotri, Bandarpoonch, Swargrohini, and many more! A buffet for the eyes of the trekkers, isn’t it?

Now, if your interest is kindled yet not captured, let me help you further. On your way to Sankri village from Dehradun, when you are done with the pleasantries with your fellow trek-mates, look outside the cab and you will be amazed with who is keeping you company – the Tons river, a major tributary to Yamuna river. The emerald-green Tons with its happy sound will give you a trailer to the epic journey you are about to take to winter Kedarkantha.

Kedarkantha trek accommodation

Experience the local culture in all its glory: The stays, food & everything in-between

The Kedarkantha trek is rewarding in multiple ways. Spanned over 6 days, this winter trek takes you right into the awe-inspiring vista from the start. It introduces you to the many wonders that the heavenly Uttarakhand has in its folds as you progress on this summit trek.

Take for instance, the base village of Sankri itself! This is a place where not only 1 or 2 but 11 Himalayan treks begin! Definitely, the stories are in abundance around here! The people of the small villages on the way, the food, the attire, their customs – and all these in the backdrop of the mighty mountains – they are a feast for the hungry minds! The simplicity and the humbleness of these people hailing from the rich cultural heritage of the Himalayas will mesmerize you at every step as you immerse yourself more and more into this winter trek! All the campsites, further on the trail, will open you up to the panoramic grandeur of the mighty snow-clad peaks and ranges where the photographers can go bonkers! But ensure to stay warm all the time as the temperature may dip to -10 to -15 degrees at times!

And when it comes to the food on the trek, right from the morning tea to the last meal of the day, everything compliments your journey. Yummy and yet simple, nutritious, and fares that take your liquid intake in consideration – that’s the bottom line for the food you get on your Kedarkantha trek. A hearty chat with the friendly kitchen staff will offer you a peep into the gastronomic heritage of Uttarakhand, as well.

Tale of the Trail: Prepare to magnify the fun

Ascent, ascent, and more ascent – it’s a summit trek, remember? But then it’s winter Kedarkantha you have chosen, and the snow is there to support and magnify your fun all the way to the top and back. Slip, fall down, slide, throw snowballs, get hit by more – whatever you do, all add breather and precious memories to this epic journey.

But it’s not only the snow that adds to the charm of the trail to the Kedarkantha trek. It’s the forests of Oak and Maple clad in snow, the sudden clearings that lift up a curtain and usher you in the mighty presence of the elegant, bright mountain ranges, and also the many shepherd’s huts lining the trail and adding an accent to the imposing landscape. You will be spoilt for choice if you need to choose one favorite thing on this winter trek!

Every end begins a new story:

When you reach the peak on Day 4 of this summit trek, the thrill you experience is unparalleled! You get invited to the mesmerizing amphitheater of the sublime Himalayan ranges! Soak into the exalted feelings of achievement, breath in the victory over your own challenges, and process the emotions that come bundled with this winter trek!

Then, on the way down to Hargaon and the next day from there to Sankri, start making the script of this epic journey. You will be collecting memories of a lifetime on the Kedarkantha trek, your materials to re-tale the tales of the trails! I am sure when you reach back Dehradun you won’t be the same who left for winter Kedarkantha on Day 1.

I’ve been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is beautiful value enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content material as you did, the net might be a lot more useful than ever before.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why should i go for kedarkantha trek.

If you are an amateur trekker and still your instincts and adrenaline rush compels you to summit a mountain, climbing the Kedar Kantha Peak will be your best bet! This popular winter trek in the Garhwal Himalayas is often aptly titled ‘The Queen of the Winter Treks.’ The entire trail blushes with beauty during winters, with snow falling from the pine trees like fairy dust and ensuring maximum activity from shutterbugs. Your acclimatization is also easy as you pass through the thick pine forests of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The woods are immensely dense and immersive, and you will see the sun playing hide-and-seek while you make your way towards the peak. Winters make the Kedar Kantha climb an ethereal experience. Knee-deep in snow, you climb to the top of the 3810-meter peak and embrace a range of stunning views. From the quaint hamlet of Snakri to the mythological whispers surrounding Juda ka Talab, the trek packs a series of fascinating adventures for you to remember. The cosmic sky above, the lush meadows and scented pine forests before you give out a call that is highly irresistible to deny!

What are the important considerations for Kedarkantha Trek?

The Kedar Kantha Trek is one of the most popular winter treks for adventure enthusiasts across the world. The trek is one of the very few Himalayan adventures accessible in winter and presents itself as an out-and-out winter trek. The snow trek is best done between November to April. You will witness the first snowfall of the season as you navigate your way from the charming Sankri village to the frozen Juda ka Talab and onwards. The entire Govind Wildlife Sanctuary basks in the winter whites and creates a magnificent aura. You will experience an adventurous climb to the summit and extremely cold dusks and dawn. However, the popularity of this trek and the countless routes that have emerged for the Kedar Kantha top have made this an all-season adventure. You can also embark on this adventure in spring from March to May, where you will be greeted by residual snow, colorful forest, and lush green meadows. The summit climb is also beautiful beyond imagination. Some trekkers attempt the Kedar Kantha trek in autumn, between September to November, where you will enjoy crisp views from the summit along with colorful forests and sprawling meadows. During the trek, it is customary to camp at scenic campsites. Alternatively, there are several tour operators and trekking companies that offer accommodation in homestays in the villages. You need to follow the instructions of your trek leader, guide and support staff, and be respectful towards the community. Since you will pass through a myriad of villages in Uttarakhand, you should be open to varied cultures and interact with them in their own ways. This trail is relatively easy and suited for amateur trekkers. You should carry all relevant documents, permits, and other trekking essentials including, backpacks, daypacks, suitable apparel including thermal inners, t-shirts, polyester pants, fleece jackets, woolen sweaters, heavy down jackets, woolen caps, balaclavas, wool and fleece gloves, sunglasses, trekking poles, several pairs of socks, rugged and heavy-duty waterproof hiking shoes, etc. Be generous with your first-aid kit, personal medications, and toiletries and hygiene products. Also, ensure that comfortable sleeping bags, thick mattresses, separate kitchen and dining tents, crampons, utensils, etc., are carried. Physical fitness and mental fortitude are the basic necessities for any Himalayan adventure. You should be in good health and maintain a rigorous physical routine for a couple of months that combines cardiovascular exercises like skipping, running, swimming, cycling, and strength and conditioning training. You can hone your mental resilience with yoga and meditation. Kedar Kantha is a highly secluded place, so the cell phone connection is not very good. However, you can carry a BSNL/Jio sim card because it might work near the base camp in Sankri.

How difficult is the Kedarkantha Trek?

The Kedar Kantha Trek is rated easy to moderate on the difficulty scale. The terrain is relatively uncomplicated. The trail ensures a moderate altitude gain of nearly 450-500 meters each day, which is easily achievable with a steady pace. Acclimatization is also easy. However, the winter temperatures and the snow might create some challenges while the summit climb is done. At certain places, the Kedar Kantha peak is inclined at 45-60 degrees, and it is possible to create certain difficulties for both amateurs and seasoned trekkers.

How long is the Kedarkantha Trek?

The Kedar Kantha Trek is just a 20 km long trek, from start to finish. The trek duration is ideally six days. The start and endpoint of the trek is the Sankri village.

Can Kedarkantha Trek be done in one day?

Yes, Kedar Kantha Trek can be finished within a day or two. The trek distance is only 20 km from start to finish.

How do I get to the Kedarkantha Trek?

    Kedarkantha Trek

Much of the economy of the Indian state of Uttarakhand depends on its tourism industry that attracts thousands of tourists, trekkers, and pilgrims from all over the world every year. Nature has enriched this part of North India with all her abundance. Irrespective of the religious inclination, the sheer radiance of nature will make anyone bow down to its power in reverence.

Uttarakhand is home to the Kedarkantha trek - an adventure at 3800 meters in the Himalayas. This trek is characterized by sunrises against the backdrop of regal mountain peaks, picturesque lakes, adventurous trails through the winter forests, vast clearings, the final summit, and mesmerizing campsite locations. The mythological legend about this summit only adds to the charisma of this thrilling trip. It is believed by locals to have a close connection to Lord Shiva, and several lores about his communion with the Pandavas can still be heard from the locals.

    A summit trek:

Kedarkantha is an ideal summit trek for the trekking amateurs. Most of the other treks at its height are just passes between ranges, but it is among the few treks that allow the trekker to conquer a summit. Once the trekker moves past the tree line, the summit seems to appear right before them, building up to the anticipation of scaling it.

The Kedarkantha summit offers a sweeping 360-degree view of the Garhwal Himalayas, especially rewarding the trekker with the sight of the Swargarohini (6252 meters), Nanda Ghunti (6309 meters), Kalanag (6387 meters), Bandarpunch (6316 meters), peaks from the Gangotri and Yamunotri range, Jaonli (6632 meters), Draupadi ka Danda (5771 meters), and Jorkanden (6473 meters). One can also easily spot the breathtakingly sprawling expanse of Rupin valley and the Har ki Dun valley in the distance.

    The snowy trail:

The Kedarkantha trek best time is in winter. During winters, the long clearings along the trail are covered by a thick blanket of fresh snow. Surrounded by the alpine vegetation of oaks, pines, and maple trees laden with soft, powdery snowflakes, one can experience the wonder of walking through a winter wonderland. The scenery makes for beautiful pictures in winter.

    The mythological connection:

Kedarkantha has significant mythological importance in regard to ancient Hinduism. Lord Shiva chose this peak to have his temple built upon and to meditate in peace. But the settlements around him bustled with their everyday life. It is said that the god's meditation was disturbed by the mooing of a cow nearby, and so, he relocated to Kedarnath.

The work of the temple remained unfinished, built only up to the god's neck - thus, this peak earned its name - Kedarkantha. The half-built shrine at the summit remains a marker of the legend to this day. Listening to locals talk about these legends is an enriching experience, especially if one does the Kedarkantha trek solo and seeks some company.

    Juda ka Talab:

The Juda ka Talab offers an enchanting view of the alpine lake nestled in the midst of tall coniferous trees. It mostly stays frozen in winter, and one can walk on it at this time of the year. This experience contributes to the rewarding value of this summit trek.

Not just the mountain peak of Kedarkantha but the lake here too has a mythological relation to Lord Shiva. Situated at the height of 2773 meters, the lake is said to be formed when a few drops of water fell here from the constraints of Shiva's dreadlocked hair. According to local legend, this lake is also connected with another lake beneath it. Hence it is named Juda, or connected.

    Overview of the Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha Trek location and basic information

Kedarkantha is a summit trek located in the heart of the Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. It lies under the administration of the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park and is best done in winter. It is a popular winter trek, so much so that it has earned the Queen of Winter Treks title.

The Garhwal Himalayas offer enchanting views from atop the Kedarkantha summit. The trail is about 20 km long. The Kedarkantha trek itinerary takes around 4-6 days to cover. The major highlight of the trek is walking through the night and watching the sunrise from the peak.

    Kedarkantha Trek cost

The cost of doing this trek is around USD 70 to 135 (INR 5000 to 10000), depending upon the services provided by your trekking company. An experienced local guide will be able to help the trekkers navigate through the area easily. This charge may not be included in the trekking package one opts for.

Cell phone connectivity on the Kedarkantha Trek

There is next to no connectivity or phone network in the Kedarkantha trek . The starting point of the trek at Sankri has decent connectivity, but it is best to assume that one will have no network here onwards. Sankri is also the last point that is electrically connected, so extra batteries and power banks for electronic gadgets should be carried.

How Difficult is the Kedarkantha Trek?

Experts have classified Kedarkantha to be an easy to moderate level trek. The ascent in this trek is gradual and steady. Vast clearings intersperse the steep sections. The steady altitude gain of around 1670 to 1830 meters for three consecutive days is easy if the trekkers are mentally and physically prepared to take on the journey. The trek of 4-6 days is not too demanding, but at the same time, one has to prepare well to deal with every eventuality.

The snow is especially thick in winter, and the trekkers require an experienced local guide to help them navigate it. The day you push for the summit is long, and it takes around 8 hours. The steep climb and descent make it a challenge for the trekkers. Although it becomes moderately challenging during the winter months, you can expect a pleasant experience of trekking to a summit with proper gear and safety measures.

Best Time to Visit the Kedarkantha Trek

The Kedarkantha trek itinerary can be covered anytime in almost ten months of the year, barring the monsoon months- July and August. Each season displays a different side of the mountains and is equally good. But Kedarkantha is mostly popular as a winter trek, done in December, January, and February.

    Spring and summer

Trekkers who seek the quiet company of nature might do well to embark on this trek in the summer and spring months. Beautiful rhododendrons adorn the trail, and the rolling grasslands make for an enjoyable experience. April flaunts a stunning range of colors while June brings in occasional rainfall on the trail, although the weather remains very mild and comfortable.

The trek is considerably less crowded and vibrant in autumn, with its greenery fresh out of the monsoon. September and October are unarguably the best months to enjoy the lush green meadows. The scenery is crisp with a clear sky, giving one the perfect light for photography. As November approaches, the air gets colder, and winter sets in slowly, but the scenery slowly taking on an orange hue is a mesmerizing sight to watch.

According to many trekkers, the Kedarkantha trek best time is winter, and this claim is not without any base. The fresh snow covers the stretches on the trail like the white carpet. The surroundings look brilliantly bright with the sun's rays reflecting on the snow in the daytime, and the fairytale-like experience is unique. But the crowded nature of the trek during this time may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Gear Guide and Checklist for the trek to Kedarkantha

For the trek to Kedarkantha, one should pack light, keeping in mind to stay prepared for all eventualities.

    Apparel and footwear:

A summit trek usually requires a lot of warm clothes, but Kedarkantha is an easily manageable one. 2-3 quick-dry, polyester, full-sleeve t-shirts, and 2-3 pairs of sweatpants or track pants can be packed to layer up easily. The trekker must take a thermal innerwear set to deal with the chilly, snowy temperatures in winter. Light fleece sweaters layered with padded, down jackets with a hood will also help maintain optimum body temperature. You can opt for a good-quality, lightweight poncho to ward off the occasional downpour when traveling during spring or summer.

Woolen caps or balaclavas worn under the hood of the padded jacket in winter will not let you lose heat from the head. Woolen mufflers, woolen gloves, and woolen socks are ideal for a winter trek. Several pairs of synthetic sports socks will be ideal during the daytime treks. Layering up with a pair of woolen socks will keep the trekkers warm at night.

High-quality, waterproof trekking boots with microspikes and gaiters will help with the grip while traversing the snowy trails. It will also protect you against small rocks and debris that may enter any normal boot.

    Other Accessories:

UV-protection sunglasses and a sun cap will protect your eyes and skin from harmful rays of the sun on the snowy slopes. A headlamp and battery-powered torches are essential for this trek as it involves nighttime trekking. A pair of sturdy trekking poles will help the trekkers navigate properly.

Since one would have to live in camping tents, having your own set of reusable cutlery is necessary. Stainless steel utensils are ideal for packing as they are easy to wash and non-reactive. A steel plate or a lunchbox, a spoon, a fork, and a mug will suffice for the trekkers to use during the trek.

Backpacks, waterproof covers, and sleeping bags:

For the Kedarkantha summit trek, a 40 to 45 liters capacity backpack is necessary. Additionally, a fanny pack is required for packing the trekker's electronics and other essentials. Offloading is allowed in Dehradun.

Bringing waterproof covers for the backpack is necessary because one can never tell when the weather in the mountains will change. Your electronics, wallet, and essential documents should be packed in water-resistant bags to protect them from damage.

To keep yourself warm and comfortable at night, a thick, good-quality sleeping bag will be essential.

    Toiletries and hygiene products:

A personal set of toiletries should include a toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, moisturizer, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and deodorant for their daily needs. For cleaning up quickly, toilet paper, tissue rolls, and wet wipes will be necessary. For maintaining menstrual hygiene, women should carry an adequate number of tampons, sanitary napkins, or menstrual cups on the trek.

    Medical kit with first-aid:

A trekker should always keep in hand common medicines like paracetamols, antihistamines, anti-nausea medicines, antacids, and painkillers. A simple first-aid kit containing bandaids, crepe bandages, antiseptic liquid, ointment, gauze swabs, insect repellent cream, and a pain-relieving spray should be able to treat any minor sprains or injuries. Water-purifying tablets should also be carried as visitors often tend to fall sick because of the change of drinking water.

    Important documents:

Whether it's a trekking group or a person doing the Kedarkantha trek solo , they must carry a government-issued photo ID with address proof, a few photocopies of it, and two passport-sized photographs. Foreign trekkers should keep their passports and visas carefully as they are necessary items.

The Kedarkantha trekking trail falls in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. The permit to enter this region comes at a fee of USD 2 (INR 150) for Indian nationals and USD 8 to 9 (INR 600) for foreign tourists for 3 days and 2 nights. This can be extended upon request with extra charges.

    Kedarkantha Trek Itinerary

The Kedarkantha trek itinerary looks very short but is extremely rewarding with the adventures it has to offer. The starting point at Sankri can be reached from Dehradun by hiring a car for a 187 km ride that will probably take around 6 to 7 hours. The Yamuna and Tons river will accompany the visitors as they are taken through pine forests. The trek starts the following day.

    • Day 1: The first day starts with the trekkers setting out from the Saur village. Several suspension bridges and little blocks of hamlets can be found at this high altitude. It is a picturesque trail, like something out of a Christmas greetings card. The day's trek is a 4 km distance that takes at least 3 to 4 hours because of the steep gradient. This night's campsite would be at Juda ka Talab so that one can gaze upon the starry night sky right above the frozen lake with wonder.
    • Day 2: This day will take the trekkers to the base camp (3430 meters) of the Kedarkantha trek. The Gujjar huts dot the way, letting the other trekkers rest here for a while. Several peaks of the Himalayas can be seen from this summit, including the Bandarpunch, Kalanag, Swargarohini, and Ranglana. The distance to be covered might seem to be a short stretch of 4 km, but the steep slope of the Garhwal Himalayas here will make the ascent very slow. The summit of Kedarkantha itself can be seen from here. This makes the trekkers thrum with excitement for the next day's climb as they retire into their tents for the night.
    • Day 3: The third day entails 6 to 7 hours of trekking to cover 6km. Even the Gangotri and Yamunotri ranges and the Kinnaur Kailash summit accompany the trekkers along the beautiful trail. Watching the sunrise at the summit is the most magical feeling in the whole trek. The trekkers are required to return to the basecamp by sundown after spending some time at the summit. The last night is spent here, getting ready to descend the next day.
    • Day 4: This is the last day that the trekkers will be able to walk on the trail. It will take around 4 to 5 hours to cover a 6 km distance of the trail, and trekkers finally reach the Sankri village, bidding adieu to the soaring mountains as they prepare to leave for Dehradun the next day.

    Getting Fit For Kedarkantha Trek

The trek to Kedarkantha is not too demanding, but one must build cardiovascular strength before embarking on the trek. The steep climb requires the trekker to physically be at their top, even more so if they're doing the Kedarkantha trek solo. The trekker can increase their stamina by doing regular exercises like jogging, walking, cycling, swimming, squatting, and skipping ropes.

The trek to Kedarkantha peak does not involve any technical climbing or dangerous territory, but it is best to prepare yourself for all consequences. Nothing is unachievable with grit and determination. Practicing yoga and meditation will help develop the composure, determination, and mental resilience needed for this trek.

At its height, Kedarkantha is the only summit trek in Uttarakhand beside Chandrashila. The trekkers should take good care in choosing the proper trekking equipment, especially if they are traveling in winter. For many trekking enthusiasts, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reach a summit. So, with proper preparations and precautions, this experience will forever remain a memorable one for them.

    Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

Spring: Starting from March to May, spring season has a slightly warmer temperature ranging from 17 °C to 20 °C. But it is still the best time to trek after Autumn as the forests come to life with blooming flowers and green trees. The air is filled with the fragrance of the flowers and the clear sky gives an uninterrupted view of mountains.

Summer: Starting from June to August, the summer season is also known as the rainy season with daily temperature from 18 °C to 25 °C. It is also known as ‘off-season’ as the rain leads to landslides in the lower region and avalanches in the higher reason making it very less preferable season. Though you can still trek in the season if you would have prepared accordingly. Having muddy and slippery routes with unclear sky you will find lesser crowd.

Autumn: September to November is the best season to plan a trek. The temperature starts from 15 °C to 17 °C with rain or snowfall. As the sky will be clear, sunrise and sunsets could be seen perfectly. Though you will find the trail very crowded but the trek is worth doing.

Winter: Starting from December and lasting till February, winter days have temperature from 9 °C to 12 °C, whereas the temperature at night could fall down till -15 °C to -20 °C with foggy morning and unclear sky.
