Anakonda Amazon River Cruise Ship

Anakonda Deals

Amazon Squirrel Monkey

The luxurious Anakonda lauded as South America’s leading boutique cruise at the World Travel Awards, takes up to 36 passengers deep into the upper basins of the Napo and Aguarico Rivers, around the mega-diverse Pañacocha biological corridor and Yasuni National Park biosphere reserve – Ecuador’s largest protected animal reserve – for unprecedented wildlife watching opportunities and authentic cultural encounters.

Refined Relaxation

Guests of the Anakonda get to relax even before boarding the vessel, in a purpose-built, private VIP lounge at the pier in Coca, where complimentary refreshments are available. Once you step foot on board, you’ll find more luxurious touches, with the vessel featuring an expansive sun deck complete with lazy chairs and a refreshing warm outdoor Jacuzzi, and a fabulous al fresco shaded lounge on the third deck, ideal for exotic cocktails, relaxation, or simply enjoying the spectacular rainforest views.

The neighboring indoor lounge-cum-conference room invitingly welcomes the weary and those thirsty for alcohol and knowledge with its panoramic views, plush sofas, fascinating expert-led lectures and well-stocked El Dorado Bar. Those seeking a quite corner for reading or some exclusive souvenirs should head to the bow of the second deck to find a reclusive reading room and boutique.

You may be forgiven for thinking you are in a 5-star hotel as you fuel your expedition with gourmet food, prepared by internationally trained chefs, in the first deck’s spacious restaurant, and reminisce about your rainforest discoveries at the end of each day in well-appointed, sizeable suites, especially the Deluxe Suites which feature jacuzzi baths and private balconies.

Special Excursions

Whether you choose to do the four-, five- or combined eight-day cruise, the Ecuadorian Amazon has some special experiences to share. Marvel at a kaleidoscopic gathering of macaws and parrots as they get their daily detox at a hidden clay lick. Try your hand at intrepidly kayaking through the tributaries of the Amazon, or on the longer itineraries, why not spend a glamping night in the jungle (for an additional cost) for a once-in-a-lifetime stay under spectacular starry skies, surrounded by the sounds and spirits of the jungle.

Embrace the ancestral culture of the local indigenous communities who live in this remote realm, as they warmly welcome you into their homes or village centers and impart their family recipes as they teach you how to make traditional Amazonian dishes. At every turn you will be accompanied by expert naturalist guides, many of whom are local to the region, to enrich your understanding of the ecosystems and wildlife around you, and the vessel’s special travel concierge will go out of their way to give you a personalized cruise experience.

As well as the delicious cuisine on board, foodies and chocoholics will also be excited to learn that onboard chocolate tastings with the finest Ecuadorian chocolate can be arranged with anticipation, and during excursions it is also possible to savor the rainforest’s natural flavor offerings, from the cocoa fruit in its pure and natural state, to the much-coveted cinnamon bark which Francisco de Orellana himself set off in search of when looking for the “land of cinnamon”, and ultimately resulted in the discovery of the Amazon River.

Participate In Conservation Projects

The habitat of the incredible wildlife that call the Amazon their home is threatened by many invasive industries such as logging, oil, poachers and others whose actions and constant exploitation have endangered many species almost to the point of extinction. To counter this, the Anakonda’s pioneering and passionately philanthropic owners – co-founders of Ecuador’s Ecotourism Society – have started 3 conservation projects which lucky passengers have the privilege of directly participating in.

At certain times of the year you may be lucky enough to release a yellow-spotted sideneck turtle hatchling into the wild at the charapas breeding project, aimed at repopulating the region’s riverbanks with these rare, vulnerable-listed reptiles. Guests can also learn about the plight of the critically endangered Amazonian manatee at the newly created Manatee Research Center and witness and participate in the care and rehabilitation of rescued manatees before their release.

As part of longer itineraries you may also get the chance to feed the remarkable pink Amazon River Dolphin in the wild in Cocaya, near a new research station close to the Peruvian border that facilitates the monitoring and observation of this unique species.

Named after the anaconda, the infamous gargantuan serpent that Hollywood has managed to misrepresent in many a movie, the Anakonda is in reality, like its namesake snake, a graceful, beautiful, almost spiritual vessel to behold as she winds through the depths of the Amazon rainforest. As has the anaconda been an inspiration for indigenous art, symbolizing Mother Nature’s gifts to our planet, these award-winning Anakonda Amazon cruises are an equally artistic and generous offering, with this boutique boat’s contemporary curves and adventurous itineraries giving you the opportunity to uncover the innermost secrets of the Ecuadorian Amazon in style.

Itineraries & Prices

Embarkation

PM:  Our adventure begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. After a 30-minute flight from Quito to the Amazonian city of Coca, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe for a 90-minute journey down the river, taking in the beauty of the Amazon, until we reach the Anakonda Amazon Explorer and receive our warm welcome aboard.

On the Anakonda, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides, who will provide us with a brief, informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon; and afterward, guests will have the opportunity to explore our cruise ship and admire the rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River. After a delicious dinner, we will take a nighttime forest walk to hear the sounds of the rainforest and observe the nocturnal wildlife.

Anakonda Amazon's 4-Day Itinerary Day One - Skiff Ride.

Pañacocha Biological Corridor & The Mythical Piranha Lagoon

AM : We will travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta, where we will embark on a canoe trip to Pañacocha Lake (“Piranha Lagoon” in the native Kichwa language), an ecosystem flooded by blackwater river water. The surrounding protected rainforest is home to primates and birds and is the perfect habitat for piranhas, the Paíche or pirarucu (one of the world’s largest freshwater fish), the white caiman, and hundreds of other aquatic animals. The surrounding protected rainforest is home to primates and various bird species, which we will be able to spot during a walk with our guides.

PM : We will then recharge our energy with an Amazon-style barbeque at a community camp, and after a short rest, we will take part in aquatic activities such as kayaking and/or swimming. Back onboard the Anakonda, we will build on what we learned with an interesting talk about the region given by our guides.

Anakonda Amazon's 4-Day Itinerary Day Two - River Views.

Parrot Clay Licks & Amazonian Communities

AM : We will set out on our motorized canoes early in the morning to witness one of the most incredible sights on this side of the Western Amazon - the famous parrot clay licks. This unique place is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets, and Amazon birds who meet up here to lick the clay which provides a healthy boost to their digestion.

PM : In the afternoon we will visit the Kichwa women’s community project, where we will learn about the indigenous lifestyle along the Napo river, their ancestral culture, and their community, and will have the opportunity to support them by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Charapas Turtle Conservation that we support together with the community.

anakonda amazon river cruise

PM: Following a quick 30-minute flight from Quito, we will land in the Amazonian town of Francisco de Orellana (more commonly called “Coca”). Once there, we will drive to the river’s dock to board a motorized canoe that will take us downriver for about an hour, all the time admiring the rainforest landscape and banks of the majestic Napo River. We will then board the Anakonda Amazon Cruise motor vessel (M/V). Once everyone is on board the Anakonda, we continue sailing downriver. This is when passengers will be able to appreciate the host of features offered by this Amazonian riverboat. In addition to its roomy social areas and comfortable cabins, the ship possesses an observation deck for amazing views of the Amazon rainforest. This evening, we will go on a nocturnal jungle walk, which will give you your first chance to experience the sounds and sights of the completely different world of the Amazon by night. Sparkling fireflies and phosphorescent eyes will undoubtedly astonish you in this magical birthplace of life. Led by your guide, searching for nocturnal animals can be an unforgettable experience.

AM: Today we will continue sailing downriver until reaching the Pañayacu Biological Corridor, a sprawling primary forest that includes flooded and terra firma forest. Once there, we will travel by motorized canoe up another river to take in the sights of this amazing nature reserve. We will all keep our eyes out for the legendary Pink river dolphins, common Squirrel monkeys and a host of other animals. However, since Pañacocha (meaning “Piranha Lake” in Kichwa) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters, the lakes and rivers here are also perfect for aquatic life such as the notorious piranha, as well as the White caiman and the Water monkey fish (“Arawana”). In the afternoon, the more daring members of the group can go for a cool, energizing swim in those same waters. Later, everyone will assemble at a nearby camping site to savor a rich Amazonian-style BBQ and ice-cold drinks. Reinvigorated by our break, we will then strike out along trails deep into the rainforest, returning to the ship that evening for a well-deserved dinner.

AM: Following breakfast on board the Anakonda, we will head out to witness an astonishing natural phenomenon of the western Amazon basin. Groups of colorful parrots descend from the air to ingest the clay on some riverbanks almost every day. These sites, called “clay licks,” are unforgettable. Hiding behind a bird blind, you will have a chance (weather permitting) to view up to hundreds of parrots and parakeets attracted to the toxin-reducing sodium-rich clay. Our next activity will take us to the Sani Warmi Kichwa Interpretation Center, which showcases the arts, crafts, customs, traditions and everyday life of the local indigenous Kichwa community. After lunch, we will also stop at the Yakukawsay Kichwa Interpretation Center, where you will have a chance to buy handcrafted souvenirs and other locally produced goods. Following dinner on board the Anakonda, we should be able to go on a fascinating evening walk in Yasuni National Reserve, depending on the weather. Nighttime is the prime time for feeding in the jungle; so as soon as the sun begins to set, numerous creatures emerge that can’t be seen during the day. At some point on the walk, we will ask you to turn off your flashlight and stay quiet to let your senses adapt to the darkness, listening to the symphony of rainforest sounds. This is when you’ll truly be able to appreciate the vastness of the Amazon jungle and its countless secrets.

AM: Passengers will disembark the M/V Anakonda this morning to board a motorized canoe that will take us back to Coca (a one-hour ride), where you will catch your return flight to Quito.

AM: After breakfast, we will disembark for our first daytime rainforest experience. Venturing along untamed trails, we will go on a three-hour hike that winds past towering trees, across streams and takes us beneath the primary canopy – while all the time observing the particularly abundant bird life in this region. You are sure to spot many of the 600 species of birds here, which include raptors, terns, macaws, parrots and toucans, though particular sightings depend on the weather and river level. Following lunch back on board the ship, the M/V Anakonda will cruise downriver to one of the Ecuadorian Amazon’s most untouched and seldom explored regions. Since the best way to visit this flooded ecosystem is by canoe, we will begin paddling along blackwater lagoons and rivers to discover the pristine beauty of this lush rainforest world. Here, you will certainly find the eerier eyes of Black caiman poking up out of the water as we also search for anaconda and the legendary Pink river dolphin. It’s likely that we will also come across various species of monkeys, all kinds of frogs and river turtles, as well as the primitive Hoatzin, a bird known locally as the “Stinky Turkey.”

AM: After another delicious breakfast on board the Anakonda, you will have a chance to interact with local children when we visit a village school. Meeting with the kids and teachers, you will have an opportunity to learn about the educational system and the way of life of remote Ecuador communities situated along the banks of the Napo River. Later, after making our way back to the M/V Anakonda for lunch, we will all appreciate a midday break as we cruise further downriver. On the ship, you will have a chance to participate in a presentation about the Amazon and view a documentary concerning the region. If there’s enough time, you can also learn about the typical handicrafts of the area, as well as try your hand at making some yourself. We will spend the afternoon exploring the exotic plant and animal life on Napo Island, one of the largest islands on river.

AM: As soon as we finish breakfast, we will climb a 100-foot high observation tower supported in part by a giant kapok tree. Reaching such a height will afford you a 360º range of vision over the forest canopy. From here, you can easily admire colorful bird species that are almost impossible to see from below, while orchids, bromeliads and wild lichen cover the tree branches all around. This afternoon we will visit the 13,000-acre (53 km²) Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area that consists mainly of wetlands. Since this excursion will extend past sunset, we will also pull out our flashlights to do some Black caiman spotting before heading back to the M/V Anakonda for dinner.

AM: In the morning, we will disembark the M/V Anakonda and board a motorized canoe for a one-hour boat ride back to Coca. From there you will catch your return flight to Ecuador’s capital city, Quito.

After a safety briefing, we will head out on this magical river journey. On the alternative canoe trip, you will paddle up and down the mighty Napo River. With either option, you can expect to spot monkeys, colorful tropical birds, river turtles and possibly sloths and other exotic creatures. Your naturalist guide will, of course, accompany you to point out highlights and make fascinating insights into this unique eco-system.

Meeting with the kids, teachers and parents, you will have an opportunity to learn about the educational systems and the way of life of remote Ecuador communities situated along the banks of the Napo River. We will spend the afternoon exploring the exotic plant and animal life on Napo Island, one of the largest islands on the river.

AM: Today you will have a choice between a kayaking and a canoeing adventure. The kayaking excursion will take you into the Yasuni National Reserve via the Indillama River, a tributary of the Napo. After a safety briefing, we will head out on this magical river journey. On the alternative canoe trip, you will paddle up and down the mighty Napo River itself. With either option, you can expect to spot monkeys, colorful tropical birds, river turtles and possibly sloths and other exotic creatures. Your naturalist guide will, of course, accompany you to point out highlights and make fascinating insights into this unique eco-system.

AM: Today we will continue sailing downriver until reaching the Pañayacu Biological Corridor, a sprawling primary forest that includes flooded and terra firma forest. Once there, we will travel by canoe up another river to take in the sights of this amazing nature reserve. We will all keep our eyes out for the legendary Pink river dolphins, common Squirrel monkeys and a host of other animals. However, since Pañacocha (meaning “Piranha Lake” in Kichwa) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters, the lakes and rivers here are also perfect for the aquatic life such as the notorious Piranha fish, as well as the White caiman and the Water monkey fish (“Arawana”).

Onboard accommodations All meals while on board Unlimited supply of water, coffee and tea Transfers to/from the vessel when arriving on recommended flights Excursions with a certified naturalist guide, as indicated in the itinerary

Our 40 guests aboard the 148 foot-long M/V Anakonda Amazon River Cruise may enjoy a wide variety of wine and fine dining, complete with the all-inclusive comfort of a five-star boutique hotel. Our 18 suites, each with an area over 215 square feet, feature sitting areas, large and comfortable beds, and wall-to-wall panoramic windows. The observation deck with the outdoor Jacuzzi and our al fresco lounge are ideal places to have a cocktail, to relax with a good book or simply enjoy the spectacular view

Day 1 : Sunday: Quito – Coca – Napo River

We have itineraries of 3,4,5,7 and 8 days, depending on your preferences. This is an example itinerary of 8 days

Departure from Quito.  A short 30-minute flight takes us to the frontier town of Coca (Francisco de Orellana) – and transfer to the dock, where we will embark on a motorized canoe and navigate down river about 1 hour, to board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruise. Throughout the journey we have a chance to admire the rainforest landscape and banks of the great Napo River.

Immediately after boarding the M/V Anakonda, we continue navigating downstream. Passengers will have their first opportunities to enjoy the exciting features of our cruise ship: the spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and an observation deck that offers spectacular views. An evening walk is organized after sunset; it gives us the opportunity to discover the forest’s nocturnal activity and listen to the incessant sounds of nature.

Day 2 : Visiting the Pañacocha Biological Corridor

We will continue our navigation downstream to the Pañayacu River delta; take a canoe trip up the river to experience the sights of this fascinating reserve. We will seek out Pink River Dolphins, Common Squirrel Monkeys and much more. Pañacocha (Piranha Lake, in Quechua) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters. The rivers and lakes here are the perfect habitat for the infamous Piranha, as well as the Water Monkey Fish (Arawana) and White Caiman. After a refreshing swim (for the courageous!), we will enjoy a delicious Amazon-style BBQ meal and refreshing beverages at a nearby camping site. In the afternoon, we will head out on exploration trails, and return onboard for dinner.

Day 3 : Clay licks – Sani Warmi & Yasuní National Park

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon.

Later we will visit the Sani Warmi Kichwa Interpretation Center, where a group of Kichwa women will speak of their customs, cuisine and everyday life. They have created the center in order to showcase their culture, and it is a unique opportunity to learn about Amazonian lifestyles along the Napo River. You will also have the opportunity to buy crafts, local products and souvenirs.

After lunch, we will make a stop at the Yakukawsay Kichwa Interpretation Centre, and end with an interesting evening walk through the forest (depending on accessibility, river water levels and weather conditions).

Day 4 : Indillama & Napo Rivers – Yasuní National Park

In this day you have the option to kayak trough one of the afluents of the Napo River that goes into the Yasuni National Park, the Indillama River. Great excursions for wildlife observation, kayaks are a great silent vehicle to flow down river.

Or you can choose to go tin a canoe ride in search of more wildlife through the Napo River. It’s up to you!

Day 5 : Border with Peru (the heart of Yasuní)

After a delicious breakfast, we disembark on land for our first daylight close-and-personal tropical rainforest experience, where we will learn about the relationship between plants and animals while closely watching out for samples of Amazonia’s fascinating biodiversity at every turn.

After lunch, the M/V Anakonda navigates to one of the most pristine and little explored sections of Ecuadorian Amazonia, home to the legendary pink river dolphin, black caiman and anaconda. We may also find river turtles and various species of monkeys, as well as the primitive Hoatzin, a one-of-a-kind bird locally known as “the Stinky Turkey”. The only way to actually visit this flooded ecosystem is by canoe, a ride that will reveal the beauty of a lush jungle world.

For our more adventurous passengers, please inquire about our glamping program

Day 6 : Meeting the community – activities on board – island exploration

Breakfast on board. We visit a school located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will have the opportunity to interact with children of the area and learn about the educational system of a remote jungle community in Ecuador.

We return on board the M/V Anakonda for lunch and a moment to relax while we navigate upstream.  We will offer a lecture and documentary screening, and if time permits, learn about (and make) typical handicrafts of the area. In the afternoon, we explore one of the largest river islands of the Napo River.

Day 7 : Parrot’s clay lick – Limoncocha biological reserve

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon. We will also visit a small community arts and crafts shop, an excellent place to find souvenirs to take back.

In the afternoon, we visit Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area where more than 478 bird species and several monkey species have been recorded. This activity will extend into the evening, when we will have a chance to spot black caiman with the help of our flashlights. Return to the M/V Anakonda for dinner.

Anakonda Amazon River Cruise

anakonda amazon river cruise

Most Popular Ecuador Trips & Tours

Due to fairly stable seasonal weather conditions in Ecuador, travelers can enjoy year-round travel to the country. Some areas have better weather at certain times of the year, but it is always a good time to travel to Ecuador. Ecuador has a surprising variety of climates. The weather can be very localized and tends to change quickly because of the country’s unique geography. Located on the Equator, Ecuador is divided into four main regions: the Andes, the Amazon, the Coast, and the Galapagos Islands. Within these four regions of this small country, roughly the size of Colorado, elements of all four seasons can occur in a single day. The Andes (Highlands) Visitors can experience the Andean Highlands year-round, though June to September and late November to mid-January tend to be the drier months. February to May and October to mid-November are considered the rainier season. During the rainier months, one will find warm sunny weather in the morning followed by almost daily showers in the afternoon. Temperatures show little variance throughout the year with averages in the 60s during the day and 50s at night, though sunny days may get into the 70s and cooler nights may drop into the 40s. Despite these averages, it is common to have rainy streaks in the dry season and nice sunny weather in the wet season. It is best to come prepared for both rain and sun, as visitors will likely run into both during any month of the year. Warm days and cool nights are normal so packing layers is essential. The Amazon The Amazon basin is what you would expect of a tropical rainforest: wet, hot and humid. January marks the beginning of the less rainy period, which extends through March. Calling this the dry season would be a misnomer as it still rains quite frequently. March through July tends to be rainier than the first two months of the year, with July tending to be the rainiest. August through December is known as the fluctuation season. During this time, it is nearly impossible to predict weather patterns. One minute could be hot and sunny with clear blue skies and then the next minute a heavy downpour could begin. Temperatures year-round range in the 80s (27-33°C) and rain, sometimes even cool rainstorms, can be expected most days in the afternoon, as the Amazon basin is truly a rainforest. Any time of year is great to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon despite the level of rain. Contrary to what one may think, the months with higher averages of rainfall are great times to visit. Higher levels of rain increase fruit production, which results in more activity from monkeys and other fruit eating species. The Amazon is an unpredictable environment from both a weather and wildlife standpoint. The best approach for visitors to have an excellent Amazonian experience is to come prepared for the unexpected and to have an open mind! The Coast On coast, the dry season runs from about June to December with a temperature drop to the high 70s. The garua, a damp mist, has a tendency to cast itself over the coastline and the sun. The sun can disappear for three months at a time. Then in January to June, temperatures go up and despite the occasional heavy rain, the days will be bright and sunny. The Galapagos The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate fairly temperate year-round. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain.

I have traveled many places in the world but the trip put together by Southern Explorations may well be the best. The amazing biology we saw on the Galapagos and in the Amazon, wonderful guides both on the Eclipse and at Sacha lodge, excellent food, and great coordination of the different parts of the trip made for an incredible journey.   -Marilyn Parsons, USA (Galapagos Island Cruise & Amazon)

We had an outstanding time on our Galapagos Adventure + stay at the Sacha Lodge. Everything ran seamlessly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. It was the perfect mix of activity, education, and relaxation! We also highly recommend the Sacha Lodge. - Eric & Leah Monson, USA (Galapagos Island Land & Amazon)

Anakonda Cruise--the best intimate cruise in the Amazon

We took the 4 day amazon cruise on the Anakonda. I believe it has 14 rooms, but when we went in June, there were only us (a family of 5) and another family of 5 with the ship to ourselves. All the rooms are suites and well appointed! The Deluxe suites have about 100 sq ft of space with a bathtub, but the regular suites are just as good since most of the time is spent on excursions or on deck. The crew is OUTSTANDING! Housekeeping: Probably the best there is in the global industry. Every detail is covered. Local flavored chocolates left on our beds every night and a cleaning that seemed like 3x a day. They come in the morning after you eat breakfast and leave on your excursion. Then they come while you are at dinner to turn town and refresh. The ship was impeccably clean. Food: Can you say Michelin star rating? The presentation to the variety of food brought comfort and local flavor insuring nobody left a meal hungry. No ask was too small. The Crew: Lead by Esteban and the Captain, they couldn't have been more professional, accommodating and hospitable. We truly felt like royalty as they attended to our every need and wish! Allen, the bartender, seemed just a few feet away to ask for your favorite adult beverage! The Naturalists: We had Diego for our trip and he was incredible. He was able to find animals that we wouldn't have seen right in front of our faces. His knowledge of the flora and fauna were exceptional. The personal experience having your own naturalist take you through the Amazon is unmatched! 4 days seemed too short! The 7 day cruise may have been better, but we found time to enjoy the Jacuzzi on the top deck enjoying adult beverages and looking at the stars shining from the middle of the earth. 5 stars for the Anakonda and it's crew as they spoil you down the Napo river!

We spent 4 days at Napo Wildlife Center and our high expectations were surpassed! The lodge and dwellings are hand made by a staff carpenter out of local wood, the cook and staff, the native guides, the wait staff are all professional and pleasant. At the end of our trip All the staff, from cleaning staff, to cooks and professional guides were presented and thanked by the manager in front of all the guests. We learned a lot about the amazon and about this hard working Anangu community.

We spent 4 days on this luxury boat - the Anaconda, on the Ecuadorian Napo river, a tributary to the Amazon. My friends and I were thrilled with this experience. I don't see reviews of this boat here. It is a small boat, I think of it as almost a private cruise. The boat hosts 16 guests. There were 9 of us on this trip. And it was an outstanding experience. We first came across the Napo Wildlife Lodge, also a luxury lodge. But our travel agent (And Beyond) offered either the lodge or the cruise. We chose the cruise and we were thrilled. The boat is actually quite large. It is luxury. There are 11 cruise staff all servicing the 9 of us. The food was outstanding. Let me repeat - the food was outstanding. One of my friends was following a vegan diet. The other one was gluten free. The chef flawlessly catered to both of them without exception. They had special meals prepared just for them at lunch and dinner and these meals were prepared with thought and variety. Our guides, two of them, naturalists were excellent. We couldn't be happier. It was a very active cruise. We had an activity in the morning and the afternoon every day. We were on walks, including a night walk, we visited the local communities, the canopy walk, we were on motorized canoes. We fed pink dolphins. We drove to where the Napo river crosses into Peru and meet with another Ecuadorian river; we visited lakes... We really enjoyed the biodiversity of the Napo/Amazon basin. We learned about local communities live off the land. We saw Scarlet Macaws, monkeys, all sorts of other birds and animal life, plants, trees etc. We loved this.

We were on the Anakonda boat and stopped at several places along the Napo River. We really enjoyed it. It's not something you can do in just one day. I recommend the Anakonda!

I stayed at an eco-lodge on the bank of the Napo river. Myself and 30 others were participating in a charity project to build a school in the nearby native population

We spent several days in the Casa del Suizo Hotel (which I cannot seem to find to review) and it was a joy. We traveled to the animal sanctuary across the river, boated to a local indigenous village, and went on a fabulous hike through the rain Forest. This is a place to just sit back and bask in the beauty. Birds, fish, and animals are everywhere. the vegetation is amazing and there is so much to examine and enjoy.

An evening walk is organized after sunset, giving you the opportunity to discover the forest’s nocturnal activity and listen to the sounds of nature.

Day 2     Thursday     Peruvian Border / Yasuní

Walk through the rainforest with your naturalist guide, learning about Amazonia’s incredible biodiversity and the relationship between the local plants and animals. The Anakonda Amazon River Cruise is the premier luxury ship in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest.

It was built to make the experience of the amazon the most comprehensive and unique adventure possible its eighteen suites feature ample sitting areas and large and comfortable beds..

It was precisely some 30 years back that we first decided to head out to these jungles and discover how truly wonderful the Amazon was and how fascinating it became to show this to others in all of its splendor. Today, in this environmental age, Amazon travel has never been so pertinent and we proudly present the new Anakonda Amazon River Cruises as the most tweaked, ergonomic and thought-out way to discover the mystery, spirit, life, and multicolored infinity of the most biodiverse corner on Earth.

The vessel comes complete with an expansive observation deck, an outdoor Jacuzzi and one al fresco lounge; ideal for cocktails, relaxation, reading or simply enjoying the spectacular view. The vessel also features 3 canoes for guest transportation to land excursions and activities and also 10 kayaks. The Anakonda offers hammocks, naturalist tour leaders and a travel concierge, who will go out of his way to personalize your experience, making the Anakonda Amazon River Cruise a savory, unforgettably and exciting treat!

M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises 8 Days / 7 Nights Itinerary

(sunday - sunday), day 1 - sunday: quito – coca – napo river.

Our adventure begins in the city of Quito, Capital of Ecuador. After taking a short 30- minute flight from Quito to the Amazon city of Coca, located in the Province of San Francisco de Orellana, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe to begin our journey down the river for approximately an hour and a half, taking in the first sights and sounds of the Amazon. Soon, we will reach the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises and receive our welcome aboard.

Once we have settled into the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides who will provide us with a brief and informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon, after which guests will have their first opportunity to discover the exciting features of our cruise ship: spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and the observation deck that allows us to admire the changing rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River.

After dinner, we will plunge straight into the Amazon by going for a nighttime forest walk to observe the forest’s nocturnal activity and experience the thrill of the vivid noises and aromas that come from so much biodiversity.

Day 2 - Monday: Pañacocha Biological Corridor

We continue to travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta, where we will take a canoe trip to experience the sights of this fascinating water reserve. Pañacocha Lake is an ecosystem flooded by blackwaters. Pañacocha means “Piranha Lake” in the native Quechua language. The surrounding protected Rainforest is home to 9 species of primates, 500 species of birds and more than 100 fish species. This is the perfect habitat for Piranhas, the Water Monkey Fish (Arawana) and the White Caiman.

In this little piece of paradise, we will participate in nature walks led by our local naturalist guides, and relax at a nearby campsite where we will enjoy a delicious Amazon-style BBQ and refreshing beverages.

After lunch, we will do some kayaking, and the bravest among us will enjoy a nice refreshing swim in the Piranha Lake! We promise it’s not as dangerous as it sounds!

Back on board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises, our guests will have the opportunity to attend a lecture given by our concierge and watch an educational documentary about the region.

Day 3 - Tuesday: Parrot Clay Licks– Amazonian Communities & Observation Tower

This morning, we will set out on canoes to observe one of the most incredible sights on this side of the Western Amazon – the Parrot Clay Licks. This unique place is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets and amazon birds, every day.

Later, we will visit a Quechua Cultural Center, where we will learn about Amazon communities and their ancestral culture, traditions, and cuisine. Members of the local community will teach us about indigenous lifestyles along the Napo River and we will have the opportunity to support the local community by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs.

Before sunset, we will visit an observation tower in the rainforest canopy, which offers an astonishing 360-degree view of the Amazon basin and is the perfect photo opportunity! Birdwatchers and bird-lovers alike will especially enjoy this outing.

Day 4 - Wednesday: Indillllama & Napo River – The North Side Of Yasuní National Park

We will begin the day kayaking along the Indillama River, one of the Napo River’s tributaries, which leads us into Yasuni National Park. Kayaks are smooth and silent, providing the very best opportunity to observe wildlife. Canoes can also be used to travel in search of more wildlife. The choice is yours! In these waters, you will find yourself surrounded by lush greenery.

After an adventure-filled day, you may choose to take advantage of our observation deck where you can relax and experience a magical view under the stars.

Our more energetic guests may choose to unwind with a night walk through the jungle to observe nocturnal creatures.

Day 5 - Thursday: The Heart Of The Yasuni National Park (Home Of the Legendary Pink River Dolphin)

Early in the morning, we will visit Yasuni National Park. This is a pristine and relatively undisturbed region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our guests will be pleased to learn that this is the home of the legendary Pink River Dolphin! In this area we can also find anacondas, river turtles and various primate species, as well as the colorful Hoatzin, a unique bird that is known locally as the “Stinky Turkey”.

Later in the afternoon, we will go canoeing in a blackwater lake, home to giant otters and the magnificent, albeit elusive manatee. We will also enjoy a pleasant hike in the Riparian/Gallery Forest, where we have the chance to spot a flock of birds and marvel at the intricate organization of a colony of leaf-cutter ants by the “Giant Fig Tree”, a truly majestic tree that is home to an abundance of wildlife, much like the “Giant Kapok Tree”.

Day 6 - Friday: Quechua Family & Canoeing In A Blackwater Lake

We will start the day off by visiting an authentic Quechua family located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will receive cultural immersion and the opportunity to learn directly from members of the local community.

We will then board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises for lunch and some leisure time as we continue our journey upstream. At this time, our guests are invited to participate in a cooking class with our chef who will share recipes and techniques for preparing exquisite traditional Ecuadorian food that you can replicate at home. Guests are also invited to try their hands at making traditional handicrafts.

Day 7 - Saturday: Forest Adventure & Observation Canopy Tower

Our guests can relax and enjoy the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises during the morning and disembark to explore the nearby forest for a walk to discover a myriad of different animals and plant species that can only be found in the Amazon basin.

In the afternoon, we will visit a canopy tower, built against a giant Kapok tree. The perspective at the top of this observation tower is truly glorious, looming above the lush treetops and providing a view of the sheer vastness of the Amazon Basin.

In the evening, we will bravely venture into the river on a canoe to search for black caimans with the help of our flashlights.

Day 8 - Sunday: Return

This is where our adventure ends! Enjoy the last part of our return journey onboard and then disembark the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises to take the motorized canoe back to Coca (a one-and-a-half-hour ride).

For those interested in shorter trips, there are also 4 days/3 nights and 5 days/4 nights itineraries that include highlights from this itinerary.

Suites and cabins on the Anakonda Amazon River Cruise are groundbreaking in every sense. For some reason, no one ever thought it possible, or even convenient, to bring all the perks of comfort to Amazon cruising in Ecuador. The Anakonda now does, offering up to 20 square-meters worth of space to unwind in suites, with private balconies, Jacuzzis, and full-frame panoramic windows that offer you much more of the Amazon’s sights and spectacles. We have limited access to internet via satellite-serviced Wi-Fi internet.

Expert Review: Ecuador Anakonda Cruise

AdventureSmith Explorations Founder and President Todd Smith reviews his  Anakonda Amazon Cruise .

My recent cruise aboard the Anakonda began the same way as most other trips to Ecuador’s Amazon, but in the end it was completely different.

The docking area for a motorized canoe ride down the Ecuadorian Amazon River.

Day 1 – Quito to the Amazon

The flight from Quito to Coca is a short one at only 35 minutes, but the difference could not be more dramatic. Taking off from Quito at about 9,000 feet in the Andes mountains in only 120   miles we descend to the headwaters of the Amazon but only after passing over 22 different habitat types. Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world, and its Amazon region (also known as the Oriente) region contains most of that biodiversity.

Upon arrival in Coca we descend from the plane into the heat and humidity of the rainforest. We gather our bags and proceed by bus for a short 10-minute transfer to our dock. Modern-day Coca (officially known as Francisco de Orellana in honor of the first European to navigate the Amazon) was born of the Ecuadorian oil boom of the 1970s. Formerly a village of less than 10,000 people, Coca now has nearly 500,000 inhabitants. At the dock we spot our first wildlife, a spider monkey daftly bouncing along the tops of wrought-iron spears on a gate leading to the dock. We are excited and amazed at its agility in the urban environment and hope the sighting is a harbinger of things to come.

A nearly two-hour motorized canoe ride down the Napo River leads away from Coca, the oil platforms and most of civilization to a stretch of river where a number of well-known jungle lodges are located. We round a final bend in the river and tied to a tree along the bank is the Anakonda, our home for the remainder of our journey. The crew greets us with a snack and fresh-squeezed juice, a ritual we would grow accustomed to on our many daily outings, and we are shown to our rooms. Immediately upon boarding the Anakonda I realize this is not your typical Ecuadorian Amazon experience.

Anakonda river boat docked along the Ecuadorian Amazon river.

As you first gaze at the Anakonda while arriving by motorized canoe she looks exactly what you would expect an Amazon riverboat to look like. With a wood-paneled and glass exterior she is crafted in a timeless riverboat style with a contemporary modern flare. The Anakonda has three spacious decks with ample room in the lounge, outdoor patio, forward salons and a huge observation deck on top. The staterooms are well appointed with floor-to-ceiling windows and a large bathroom with massage shower. The suites are even larger with a balcony and Jacuzzi tub. The dining room is comfortable with great views and delicious cuisine, but it might be crowded when the ship is completely full. Fortunately they also serve al-fresco meals on deck. The interior of the ship and each stateroom has individual climate controls to keep things nice and cool. Another benefit to cruising aboard the Anakonda, when compared to the many lodges located in this part of the Amazon, is her ability to navigate farther down river visiting a diversity of rainforest sites.

We are shown to our cabins with a few minutes to relax and unwind before we meet in the lounge for an orientation with the guides. They outline the excursions and adventures planned for the trip. Immediately I am struck by their commitment to sustainability and passion for conservation.

Day 2 – Sani Village & Canopy Tower

Our first morning’s planned excursions were postponed due to fog, so I slept in instead of getting an early-morning wake-up call. We finally make our way to San Village, the community center for about 2,000 people who live along the river in this region. With pressure from oil companies to allow drilling on their land, the Sani people have so far opted to embrace ecotourism as an alternative. We learn that the pressure of quick oil money remains and is a source of constant tension in the community. Most of the men work at the nearby Sani Lodge. A few years ago the women, eager to contribute, started a number of conservation and ecotourism projects. Each guest pays a $40 fee (included in the cruise price) for the privilege of visiting the village, enjoying a guided tour and traditional meal.

A local woman leading a group of people on a tour in Sani village.

Our tour is led by a shy young woman in her early twenties dressed in a traditional floral print dress. She leads us to a fish pond and turtle pond where they rear fish to be eaten or to replenish stocks that have been overfished in the river. Nearby is the community garden with pineapples, manioc, bananas and a number of other traditional foods. Our small group then visits the community school where young children, dressed in their nicest clothes smile and giggle as the group of travelers learns that school is compulsory in Ecuador. Kids will attend the village school through 9 th  grade, after which they will have to relocate to Coca in order to finish high school. We are amazed that the simple school has dedicated teachers, internet access and provides these rural children with the same opportunity as other children throughout Ecuador.

A few children standing outside the Sani Village School.

The highlight of the Sani visit comes when we enter the community house where a large fire is simmering pots of traditional food. Our guide is the first to partake, eating a live grub known as jungle bacon. Amazingly a couple of guests join in tasting the rainforest delicacy. Soon an entire meal of fish, plantains, manioc and cooked grubs known as jungle bacon, is spread out on giant banana leaves before us on the ground. We join our hosts sitting on the floor eating the delicious food and washing it down with Chicha, a local beverage fermented from manioc. The meal and the visit to the Sani village is a highlight of the trip and unlike other cultural tours does not feel forced, but instead feels very authentic and welcoming. The women thank us for visiting and as we descend the ramp to the dock the school children run down to wave goodbye.

A group of people enjoying a meal in the Sani village.

We return to the Anakonda where another lunch is served, but not really necessary after the meal in San Village. After some time on board for siesta we are ready for our next adventure. A short 15-minute motor canoe ride leads to a small outpost where our group enters the jungle walking on a raised boardwalk. Immediately we are surrounded by birds, bugs, plants and animals. Our guides are busy pointing out wildlife and talking about medicinal plants. An easy 40-minute walk leads to a small blackwater creek where two dugout canoes await our arrival. The creeks are like a tunnel of green as we slowly paddle along in search of wildlife. After a while the canopy opens up and we ease into a large open lagoon. We pass the San Lodge and continue for 1.5 hours to a small trail in the jungle. After another 30-minute walk we encounter a huge tree with a metal stairway suspended to its side. The 130-foot stairway leads to a canopy platform in the top of this enormous tree. We arrive just in time for sunset and terrific opportunities to view monkeys and birds. From this observation tower we can see the sun setting over the peaks of volcanoes high in the Ecuadorian highlands.

A group of people walking along a trail in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle.

The return trip in the dark is even more spectacular than the trip out. Phosphorescent larvae light up the creekside like a miniature city. In the open lagoon the starlight and Milky Way are spectacular. And our guides find a couple of caimen hunting for fish. As we return across the elevated walkway our guides point out a number of nocturnal bugs and animals, including some spiders that make us appreciate our Anakonda accommodations. We return to the ship tired and thrilled. After a late dinner we are treated to an evening program reviewing the experiences from the day and a preview of activities for tomorrow.

Day 3 – Parrot Clay Lick & Limonchinga

After another hearty and delicious breakfast we meet in the staging area for our next adventure. Our boots and ponchos have been cleaned and folded from yesterday’s activities. We take the motorized canoe to a parrot and parakeet clay lick right on the shore of the river. Hundreds of birds, come here every day to eat clay that helps them digest the toxins contained in some of the seeds and fruit that they eat. We watch and listen to the cacophony of hundreds of birds coming and going, jockeying for position on the lick. All at once the birds are frightened by a predator and they are gone. Our guide explains that they are now done for the day and will not return again until tomorrow morning.

Parrot and parakeet clay lick along the shore of the Ecuadorian Amazon River.

After the clay lick we head to a Kichwa community center. Much more developed than the Sani Village, this is a replica of a traditional Kichwa house and community center. We are treated to a traditional dance performance and a talk about traditional lifestyle. The talk is fascinating and the replica house really brings it to life, but the staged nature of the tour was not as satisfying as the Sani Village visit.

A guide leading a group of people on a trail through the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle.

A short canoe ride leads to another trail into the jungle. This path has been hardened with concrete making it easy walking. We are led to a covered observation platform overlooking another clay lick deep in the forest. We wait patiently with a number of birders from other lodges, staying very quiet in hopes that the nearby birds will descend to the lick. The ruckus in the canopy is overwhelming, and after the easy sightings of our fist lick we grow impatient that the birds are not coming down. After about an hour the birds are almost within sight when suddenly something startles them and hundreds of birds that were hiding among the trips flee to safety. Our guides explain that it may take another hour or so for them to regain the courage to approach the lick, so we depart. On our way out the guides have the spotting scope directed at a beautiful pair of scarlet macaws and the view makes the observation platform experience worth it. We return to the Anakonda for long lunch as the ship makes its way back up river.

A spider monkey climbing a tree in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle.

About 4pm we board the canoe and head to the town of Limonchinga and the Limonchinga Nature Reserve. Set aside by the oil companies the Limonchinga reserve was a “gift” to the community, most of whom now work in the nearby oil fields. Despite the fact that we could hear the hum of oil pumps in the distance the Lomonchinga reserve was full of wildlife. On our way to the canoe and dock we were delighted by the antics of several pygmy marmosets, the smallest primate in the world, about the size of a small squirrel. After only a few minutes in the canoe we see a large troop of spider monkeys climbing, jumping and playing in the trees. A number of birds are spotted as we paddle by locals fishing for their dinner. After dark we hunt caiman and sight several before spotting a 4-meter giant – a great finish to the day. We return to the Anakonda for another late dinner.

Day 4 – Return to Quito

After an early breakfast we board the canoes one last time for the two-hour return trip to Coca. This short cruise was a fantastic introduction to the Amazon and the time aboard the Anakonda is pleasurable. For travelers seeking the best possible experience aboard the Anakonda, I would suggest the 4-night/5-day cruise itinerary or longer. The longer trips are able to transit farther down river, avoiding development while offering a more wilderness-oriented trip. The longer trip extends beyond the Yasuni National Park to visit Cuyabeno Natural Reserve with excellent bird and wildlife viewing, and opportunities to see pink dolphins.

Birdwatchers and bird-lovers alike will especially enjoy this outing.

– Day 4 / WEDNESDAY: RETURN

This is where our adventure ends! • Itinerary "B" - 5 days / 4 nights

– Day 1 / WEDNESDAY: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER

– day 2 / thursday: the heart of the yasuni national park (home of the legendary pink river dolphin).

– Day 3 / FRIDAY: QUECHUA FAMILY & CANOEING IN A BLACKWATER LAKE

We will start the day off by visiting an authentic Quechua family located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will receive cultural immersion and the opportunity to learn directly from members of the local community. We will then board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises for lunch and some leisure time as we continue our journey upstream. At this time, our guests are invited to participate in a cooking class with our chef who will share recipes and techniques for preparing exquisite traditional Ecuadorian food that you can replicate at home. Guests are also invited to try their hands at making traditional handicrafts.

– Day 4 / SATURDAY: FOREST ADVENTURE & OBSERVATION CANOPY TOWER

Our guests can relax and enjoy the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises during the morning and disembark to explore the nearby forest for a walk to discover a myriad of different animals and plant species that can only be found in the Amazon basin. In the afternoon, we will visit a canopy tower, built against a giant Kapok tree. The perspective at the top of this observation tower is truly glorious, looming above the lush treetops and providing a view of the sheer vastness of the Amazon Basin. In the evening, we will bravely venture into the river on a canoe to search for black caimans with the help of our flashlights.

– Day 5 / SUNDAY: RETURN

This is where our adventure ends! Enjoy the last part of our return journey onboard and then disembark the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises to take the motorized canoe back to Coca (a one-and-a-half-hour ride). *For our passengers with a more adventurous inclination, we are pleased to offer a glamping program, which is an alternative manner to explore this enchanting destination. Contact us for more details! (Optional activity for the 4&7-nights Itinerary).

  • Itinerary "C" - 8 days / 7 nights

– Day 3 / TUESDAY: PARROT CLAY LICKS– AMAZONIAN COMMUNITIES & OBSERVATION TOWER

– day 4 / wednesday: indillllama & napo river – the norther side of yasuní national park.

– Day 5 / THURSDAY: THE HEART OF THE YASUNI NATIONAL PARK (HOME OF THE LEGENDARY PINK RIVER DOLPHIN)

– day 6 / friday: quechua family & canoeing in a blackwater lake, – day 7 / saturday: forest adventure & observation canopy tower, – day 8 / sunday: return.
