Directions are easy - simply mix 3 or 4 tablespoons of ground coffee or tea with hot water and your preferred type of milk or sweetener. Stir, put your lid on with the plunger facing up, and wait four minutes. After this, just press down on the plunger to enjoy your perfectly mixed hot beverage!

The   Bodum   Travel Press comes in two colors, black and gray, so you can match your container to the rest of your   carry-arounds . The container has a total capacity of 15 oz (0.45 L). Life is too short to drink bad coffee. Or at least that’s what I tell myself. I have experienced the missed-alarm-clock-rush to work only to realize I’ll be having a Keurig cup of coffee that morning. Or worse, no coffee at all. My attempts to plan ahead and prepare my coffee grinds and tumbler the night before are far and few between. Let’s be honest, no one should have to experience a coffee-less or tea-less work morning. This travel press is just what I am looking for. Functionality and quality become one in this travel french press. Our Take on the Bodum Travel Press

Bodum coffee makers are excellent. The Bodum Travel Press is no different. Where some users report the lid not fitting properly when the contents are at room temperature, mine secured firmly right out of the box and maintained that seal when hot. It is not 100% leak proof however, it was never designed to be. This is done to facilitate the press.

Do not expect to fill this full of hot water and coffee and just toss it into a duffel bag without making a mess. It will however hold up to bumpy car rides and even bicycle rides assuming you have a holder for it. Should it be knocked over on your desk while closed you will have ample time to recover it and avoid liquid disaster all over your pants.

This model is also quite a bit better at retaining heat than the plastic version. It's almost too good at it in fact. You’ll find yourself unscrewing the lid just to get the coffee down to drinkable levels. Once it's at an ideal temperature, it will stay there for hours if you happen to be a slow coffee drinker. If you want some coffee more immediately then you had best be a good judge of water temperature when you but the kettle on.

The only thing we miss about my old plastic one was it's transparency. There was never any question if we had added too much water or if the coffee was done. We could see it quite easily. But if that's all we have to give up for longevity then so be it. We imagine it would be hard to add cream or sugar as well but if you drink it black that’s a non-issue.

If you want quality fresh black coffee or loose leaf tea on the go without the cost or waste of a coffee shop then look no further. Convenient, sturdy and environmentally friendly, that's this press/mug combo.

Before I moved out of my parents' house and into my very first apartment, figuring out what type of coffee maker I needed was just one (relatively unimportant) task among many. Overwhelmed by choices, I quickly narrowed in on the budget option under $25 on our guide to the best French presses . I drink one cup of coffee a day, so I picked the smallest size, purchased it, and promptly forgot about it in my pre-moving haze. 

Honestly, when I opened the package I thought it was a joke. My new Bodum Brazil French Press was the smallest coffee maker I had ever seen. I actually measured the capacity with water to make sure it was 12 ounces and quickly realized I was just bad at visualizing measurements — this was a teeny-tiny, precisely 12-ounce French press. 

Turns out, I love it. The size is perfect for my particular coffee routine and the brew is smooth. I'll never go back to a full-size pot. 

Why I chose the Bodum Brazil

I was drawn to a French press because it is easy to use and environmentally friendly. I love being able to set it up, leave it for a few minutes, and come back to a smooth cup of coffee.

We've tested 12 (full-sized) French presses and Bodum makes two of our top picks: the Chambord and the Brazil . The Brazil is cheaper because it has a plastic body, which allows more heat to escape, but otherwise, it produces the same brew quality.  

The Brazil's filter keeps most of the grounds from entering my mug. It is easy to clean and has no stains after two months of use. 

On a whim, I've also used the press to make cold brew: I filled it with coffee and cold water and let it sit overnight in the fridge. My iced coffee the next day had a great bold flavor. 

Why I chose such a tiny size

For someone sensitive to caffeine, the 12-ounce size is perfect for monitoring your caffeine intake. My cup of coffee is essentially the same size and concentration every morning. If I'm still sleepy after drinking it, I know I'm particularly worn down. Similarly, if I'm feeling jumpy, I know my anxiety is higher.

With one cup of coffee, I get the energy boost without the jitters. At the same time, if I'm really dragging at 2 o'clock on a Thursday, there's a temptation to have another cup. I'm normally stopped by the fact that a French press requires a few steps to get the coffee ready — by the time the water boils, I've talked myself out of it. 

This makes exactly 12 ounces, no more and no less. If you want to make coffee for guests, you'll need patience for multiple rounds or a larger model.

The French press is a humble piece of coffee-making equipment. It doesn’t require electricity, yet experts agree that it can brew a richer and more full-bodied cup of joe in comparison to its more technologically advanced peers . For example, natural oils that would otherwise be filtered out in a drip coffee maker remain fully intact, making the coffee aromatic and robust.

The French press method of making coffee is straightforward, cost-effective, easy to use, and hard to mess up. It also doesn’t take up too much counter space. Once you have your measurements down, it’s a quick process of steeping coarse coffee grounds in near-boiling water. We tested these models using the James Hoffman French press technique , in which he uses 30 grams of coffee to 500 grams of water, waits for four minutes, and stirs through the crust. The Best Overall

If you want to keep it classic, go with the Chambord. The founder of Bodum, Jørgen Bodum, first designed the Chambord in the 1970s, but it was not until 1991 that it got the instantly recognizable design that we see today, with a heat-resistant glass carafe and sturdy stainless steel frame. It's an iconic piece of equipment that makes for a consistent pour. The stainless steel filter and spiral plate plunge down easily and create a grit-free, luscious brew. Cleanup is a breeze as the carafe, filters, and plunger are all dishwasher safe. One major downside with a glass French press is that it breaks when mishandled. However, Bodum offers replacement parts for those who need them.

A Beautiful Upgrade

Spending almost $100 on a French press when you can get a perfectly good one for a quarter of the cost means it would have to be worth the splurge. But Fellow's products rarely disappoint , and the Clara doesn't either. It has a minimalist modern design, with a BPA-free plastic exterior and a matte black finish. The interior, however, is stainless steel with vacuum-insulated walls. So it has some weight to it but is portable and shatter-resistant.

Most French presses come in three separate parts to separate the grinds from the water: A cylindrical carafe, a mesh filter, and a handle to plunge the the grinds down without burning your hands. The Clara's standout feature is that there are two separate filters on the handle—one to push the grinds down, and another to catch any stray sediment for a silt-free pour. Overall, it’s worth the price tag. We noticed a difference in taste right away. The coffee was smooth without being overly acidic or bitter. The smooth taste is in part due to its heat-locked double walls that maintain the brewing temp for optimal extraction. Even an hour after the first cup was poured, the brew maintained a 157-degree temperature.

A Shatter-Resistant Option

When it comes to durability, OXO’s Brew Venture has you covered. The shatter-resistant BPA-free plastic carafe is doubly protected by a plastic frame, making it a great option for camping or traveling. Never fear: It still has windows to help you keep an eye on how much coffee you have left. It also has a volume size of 32 ounces, which means you can make two to three cups of coffee at a time if you're in a group. A silicone ring around the filter hugs the walls to trap even more coffee grounds, and the lid has a slotted spout for an extra layer of filtration. Finally, each part of the press is dishwasher safe and can be taken apart to be cleaned.

A Stainless Steel Option

Unlike a plastic or glass press, a stainless steel French press can last for a lifetime. This double-walled option is insulated and can keep coffee warm over an extended period of time, and also has a clean aesthetic that looks great on the countertop. The plunger has two fine mesh filters to ensure your coffee is grit-free. The stainless steel interior extracts incredible flavor, and the insulation means it holds heat longer than most run-of-the-mill presses. It also comes with a small canister to hold coffee grinds, which may be useful if you’re taking it on the go. All parts are dishwasher safe.

I feel obligated to note that the Frieling French presses can range upward of $99, but they also regularly sell for half off on Amazon. Aesthetic Appeal – 4/5

The Travel Press isn’t as beautiful as some of Bodum’s other French press offerings, but that’s by design. This is a travel mug first and a travel French press second. The double-wall, vacuum-sealed stainless steel construction not only keeps your cup of coffee hot or cold, but also provides a classy look ( 2 ).

This stylish design was excellent at retaining heat and well insulated to prevent fingers from getting too hot.

The Bodum branded silicone grip and matching lid are available in a variety of bright appealing colours.

Ease of Use – 4.5/5

The is coffee maker is a French press at its core, and using a French press is as easy as can be. Just nail down two important criteria, the quantity of coffee and the grind size, and putting together a tasty brew as you dash out the house each morning is virtually foolproof. There are more advanced French press brew methods available of course, for those able to take more time.

The Bodum does lose a few marks for convenience because once the coffee has been steeped and pressed, the only way to add milk or sugar is through the drinking spout, and then there’s no way to stir. If you like your coffee sweet, avoid any hassle by adding the sugar along with the grounds at the beginning. Black coffee drinkers will find nothing to complain about here.

Additionally, Bodum has made all parts of this travel press dishwasher safe, making clean-up a breeze.

The hardest part might be waiting for your coffee to cool down, as brewing directly in an insulated mug produces a seriously hot drink.

Custom Brewing Features – 4/5

One great feature of a press style brewer is that it can also be used to steep a delicious cup of tea. If you’re an avid coffee AND tea drinker, this will be very appealing. Brew a coffee in the morning, give the press a quick rinse, and then you can use the same device to make an afternoon cup of tea.

Like any other coffee press, this coffee press can also be used to make cold brew . Just add grounds and cold water in the evening, leave the mug in the fridge overnight, and press the plunger in the morning. You’ll have a great cup of cold brew on the go and will save a ton of money by skipping the coffee shop.

Portability – 5/5

This coffee press is the very definition of portable as it was designed as a travel mug first, French press second. It’s lightweight and fits inside an average cup-holder. 

The press lid is spill-resistant, but for safety reasons, it’s not airtight. If you expect your travel mug to do some gymnastics, consider buying the Bodum Travel Press Set instead. For a few extra bucks, this comes with a plain lid, turning your travel press into a standard travel mug.

A pour-over brewer might be lightweight and portable, but you’re not going to whip it out on the bus to make a cup of coffee. The Bodum, on the other hand, just needs the hot water added before you leave home. The steeping and pressing can be done wherever you are four minutes later.

A special feature of this travel press, compared with other portable brewers, is that it’s the only one that can actually brew while you’re on the go.

Value for Money – 5/5

This travel coffee maker is great value. Not only is it one of the cheapest travel brewers on the market, but it’s two products in one . You won’t even have to buy a separate travel mug.

Do Not Buy the Bodum Travel Press If…

You’re not into French press coffee – French press style coffee is unique because the metal filter, unlike paper filters, allows more coffee oils into your final cup. Many find this a selling point, but it won’t be to everyone’s taste. There is also some evidence that heavy coffee drinkers at risk of high cholesterol should avoid this style of coffee. ( 3 )

If oily coffee isn’t for you, but you still want to caffeinate on the go, try the Aeropress or the even smaller Aeropress Go . Or if you’re into pour over coffee, the Wacaco Cuppamoka could be the one for you.

You need to serve multiple people – The Bodum Travel Press has a capacity of 350 mL. That might be enough to satisfy two people with small coffee appetites, but in general, this is not a brewer for a crowd. If you want that rich French press taste, and your friends do too, consider brewing in a larger French press before divvying it up into travel mugs. We have some great recommendations .

You’re not planning to drink it for a long time – Even though the insulated travel mug will keep your coffee hot for hours, prolonged contact with the grounds under the filter will eventually spoil your brew. This applies even more so for tea drinkers looking to avoid the bitter tannin taste that arises from over-steeping ( 4 ).

If you want to make a cup for later, consider brewing using a pour-over method, like the Kalita Wave , straight into an insulated travel mug .

You prefer a battery-operated coffee machine –  Portability is one thing, but a coffee machine can save you from the hassle of using a manual brewer. The  Makita battery-operated coffee maker  is a good choice if you’re going camping or working on-site. The coffee it makes isn’t as strong as you’d expect it to be, but it’s good enough.

The Verdict
