WELCOME TO RHODE ISLAND BREWS CRUISE!

When new breweries began sprouting up across Rhode Island and Connecticut, Bill Nangle bought a bus and created local tours for craft beer fans. People were happy to hop on the bus without worrying about who was driving, plus meet like-minded people who love beer and play trivia along the way.

Local beer has really been growing in this area, with many new breweries opening in the past few years. Some established breweries are opening second locations for production, and others are creating new tasting rooms around the area.

And we know that there are also new projects on the horizon.

We offer private bookings for parties, corporate outings, birthdays, and other private events. Our team can create and customize an all-inclusive experience for any occasion.

Please check out our Private and Corporate Tours page for more information.

Great time touring a few local breweries. Even for someone from the area it was a great time. Sam and Ken were super knowledgeable and a lot of fun. I would highly recommend!

As a novice brewer, it was great to see the variety among small to medium to large breweries. But you don’t need to know a thing about beer to enjoy this tour. Driver and Guide could not have been nicer! I will do this again!

Had a great time this weekend going on the Afternoon flights tour which took us to three breweries around the providence area which were all delicious, and we had a great time learning from and getting to know our tour guides and fellow beer drinkers. Highly recommend for locals and visiters alike if you want to try the best beer rhode island has to offer!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all of the fun. Great for a beer-loving bachelorette party!

Exploring Rhode Island’s Brewery Scene

brew in review featured image

Let’s start with Proclamation Ale Company located in Warwick. Their high-quality, innovative brews have made them an unmissable stop on any beer lover’s journey through the state. They’re known for their hop-forward beers and extensive barrel aging program.

The next stop on your brewery tour should be Grey Sail Brewing , situated in Westerly. This family-owned brewery has been mastering the art of brewing since 2011 and they’re not slowing down anytime soon! Their flagship brew ‘Captain’s Daughter’ is a double IPA that packs a punch at 8.5% ABV.

You can’t leave out Foolproof Brewing Company when talking about Rhode Island Breweries. Based in Pawtucket, Foolproof has developed quite a following thanks to their unique approach to crafting beer experiences instead of just beer itself.

Here are some quick stats about these three breweries:

And let’s not forget about all the other fantastic microbreweries scattered throughout the state! From Newport Storm Brewery in Newport offering seasonal beers alongside year-round favorites, to Revival Brewing Co. headquartered in Cranston hitting us with full-flavored craft beers – there is something here for everyone.

Remember: Always drink responsibly and enjoy the experience that each unique brewery offers. Cheers!

Historic Breweries in Rhode Island

Rhode Island’s brewing history stretches back centuries, and it’s a tale that’s as rich and frothy as the beers they’ve produced. Let’s take you on a trip to some of the oldest breweries in this beautiful state.

The roots of Rhode Island’s beer culture trace back to 1890 when Narragansett Brewing Company first opened its doors. Known lovingly as ‘Gansett by locals, this brewery is steeped in tradition. Its flagship lager was once the top-selling beer throughout New England! Today, they’re still serving up their classic brews alongside innovative new creations from their Cranston location.

Now let’s hop over to Coddington Brewing Co., founded in 1995. Nestled in Middletown, this brewery has been serving homemade brews for over two decades now and shows no signs of slowing down. They offer an impressive selection of year-round staples like their IPA and Blueberry Blonde Ale plus seasonal favorites that change with the turn of each season.

Then there’s Newport Storm Brewery, or Coastal Extreme Brewing Company as it was formerly known. It started churning out creative craft beers back in 1999, making it one of Rhode Island’s original microbreweries. Their Cyclone Series is particularly beloved – it features a unique beer for every letter of the alphabet!

Shifting gears to Pawtucket, you’ll find The Guild which isn’t exactly historic itself but houses some time-honored brewers like Narragansett and Willie’s Superbrew under its roof. This brewing collective offers visitors a chance to sample various styles from different breweries all at one spot!

And finally, we can’t forget Trinity Brewhouse – Providence’s pioneer craft brewery since 1995. From their Belgian tripel ale named Mercy Brown after a famous local vampire legend to their hearty Russian Imperial Stout – these guys know how to make standout brews!

There you have it: five historical Rhode Island breweries that’ve left indelible marks on the state’s brewing scene.

Craft Beer Innovation: Modern Breweries in Rhode Island

Buckle up, beer lovers! You’re about to dive into the refreshing world of Rhode Island’s modern breweries. This tiny state is making BIG waves in the craft beer scene. As a hub for creativity and innovation, local brewers are pushing the boundaries and redefining what it means to be a craft brewery.

First off, let’s talk about Proclamation Ale Company. They’ve been on the beer radar since 2014 thanks to their experimental brews. Their Tendril IPA has become something of a legend around these parts, with its robust flavor that packs quite the punch. If you’re looking for something out of ordinary, this might just hit the spot!

And who could forget Foolproof Brewing Company? These folks believe your life experiences greatly influence your beer-drinking ones – hence their “experience-based brewing” approach. With beers named after weather patterns like “Raincloud” or emotions such as “Laughter”, they definitely bring a unique touch to their creations.

Then there’s Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co., which started back in ’99 as Coastal Extreme Brewing Company. They were ahead of their time then and continue to lead now with innovative ideas like aging beer in rum barrels for an added kick!

  • Proclamation Ale Company
  • Foolproof Brewing Company
  • Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co.

Rhode Island may be small but it certainly isn’t short on talent or innovation when it comes to brewing! This state offers some truly distinctive tastes thanks to its dedicated and inventive breweries who aren’t afraid to shake things up. So next time you’re craving something cold and crafty – why not make it Rhode Island brewed?

Award-Winning Beers from Rhode Island

You’re in for a treat if you’re a beer enthusiast. Rhode Island, despite its small size, has made quite the name for itself in the craft beer scene. Some of their brews have even scooped up prestigious awards! Here’s where to find these award-winning beers.

Let’s start with Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island. Located in Westerly, this brewery is well-known for its flagship ale – ‘Captain’s Daughter’. This beer is a double IPA and it’s been showered with accolades. It clinched the silver medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup! If that doesn’t make your taste buds tingle, I don’t know what will.

Next on our list, we have Proclamation Ale Company. Tucked away in Warwick, Proclamation is recognized for their skillfully crafted stouts and IPAs. One standout brew here is ‘Derivative: Galaxy’, a single-hop pale ale which won bronze at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Now that’s something to raise your glass to!

Don’t forget about Foolproof Brewing Company either! Nestled in Pawtucket, Foolproof has earned high praise particularly for their ‘Barstool’ Golden Ale – bagging gold at GABF back in 2018.

And who could ignore Tilted Barn Brewery? They’ve got some serious bragging rights as Rhode Island’s first farm brewery. With an ever-changing rotation of small-batch beers on offer, they’ve taken home several local and regional awards over the years.

  • Grey Sail Brewing – Captain’s Daughter: Silver Medal at World Beer Cup
  • Proclamation Ale Company – Derivative: Galaxy: Bronze at GABF
  • Foolproof Brewing Company – Barstool Golden Ale: Gold at GABF

So there you have it folks! These breweries are creating incredible beers right here in little ol’ Rhode Island – proving that great things indeed come in small packages.

Rhode Island is home to one of the top dining destinations in New England, so it’s no surprise that the little state’s beer scene is also worth exploring. Whether you’re day-tripping from Boston to find the coolest craft brewing taprooms in the middle of the city or seeking a scenic spot elsewhere in the Ocean State to sample IPAs and lagers, Rhode Island breweries deliver great beer and good vibes. The state’s brewers guild has a RI Brewery Passport app if you want to catch ’em all, but we’ve picked eight gems to add to your travel itinerary to discover the best breweries in Rhode Island.

The Best Breweries in Rhode Island

Long Live Beerworks

Credit: Brian Samuels

Long Live Beerworks

Head here for a hop fix when in Providence. Long Live Beerworks is a fixture of today’s Rhode Island beer scene beloved for juicy New England IPAs, pastry stouts, and smoothie sour ales. (Don’t overlook the cleaner Euro styles, either: brewer Armando DeDona trained in the U.K. before debuting this outfit on Providence’s West Side.) The fresh, playful brews are the main draw at Long Live, but the cool and comfortable taproom is worth appreciating, even if you’re just picking up cans to-go. Situated in a renovated factory building, it has a private patio that’s family- and dog-friendly, plus big windows inside and mid-century details that are total #designgoals. Plan your visit around frequent food pop-ups , then head up to the mezzanine level to get a whole view of the place, including the shiny production area. Take me there .

Proclamation Ale Company

Credit: The Beer Trekker

Proclamation Ale Company

If you ever have time to kill before a flight out of TF Green Airport, it’s a perfect excuse to visit Proclamation Ale Company . Not that any beer lover should need one: Proc, as it’s lovingly called, was founded in 2014 and has since become one of the most respected—and fun to visit—breweries in the Ocean State. From the recognizable hazy IPAs like Tendril and Derivative to exclusive brews like the refreshing Laggy Pop, a lime and sea salt lager made in collaboration with The Highroller Lobster Co., you’re visiting the Warwick spot for nearly 20 beers on tap. But you’ll want to stay for the vintage arcade games, trivia nights, and events like Daveapooloza, an annual celebration (with a skate ramp!) in honor of Proc’s late founder Dave Witham . The taproom often hosts food trucks, but if you’re hungry and you don’t have a flight to catch, consider another stop for lunch on your RI brewery tour: Nearby riverside brew pub Apponaug Brewing . Take me there .

Narragansett Beer

Credit: Narragansett Beer

Narragansett Beer

“Made on honor” since 1890 (that’s a slogan printed on these iconic cans, in case you’re new to New England or beer), Narragansett Beer has had its own craft beer renaissance since being purchased by Rhode Island son Mark Hellendrung in 2005. ’Gansett still produces a mass-market amount of the lager Quint crushes in Jaws , but the destination brewery in Providence, which debuted in 2021, offers a true taproom experience. There’s an umbrella-shaded patio and occasional live music, plus exclusive small-batch beers made on-site by head brewer Lee Lord, an alum of Cambridge Brewing Company. We love the refreshing Fox Point Pale Ale, but check out the draft list to try a rotating entry like a 7% malt liquor-inspired brew called Good Luck. ’Gansett also has a kitchen on-site that dishes up food like pretzels and flatbread pizzas. Take me there .

Moniker Brewery | Best Breweries in Rhode Island

Credit: Tim Lovejoy

Moniker Brewery

A relatively new arrival on the Rhode Island beer scene, Moniker Brewery is a welcome addition in the West End of Providence. A former auto body shop has been transformed into a small taproom and expansive outdoor beer garden with fire pit tables and large, comfortable tables to fill with friends and family. The dog-friendly beer garden is also heated and shoveled year-round. But it’s not just about the pleasant experience at Moniker: The beer is solid, too. From crisp, clean lagers like the flagship State of Flow German-style Pilsner to less-seen styles like a herbaceous Gruit and IPA collaborations with other New England breweries, there is truly something on the menu for every beer fan. There’s often a food truck parked on-site and live music in the beer garden. Take me there .

Tilted Barn Brewery | Best Breweries in Rhode Island

Credit: Tilted Barn Brewery

Tilted Barn Brewery

Farmhouse breweries in scenic locales can be found across the beer-drinking world, but Rhode Island’s Tilted Barn is the real deal. The Exeter operation, which began brewing in 2014, is an update of co-founder Kara Richardson’s 100-plus-year-old family farm. Along with husband, Matt, and the Tilted Barn crew, the farm continues to grow hops, and it hosts a weekly farmers’ market from June through October selling homegrown foods and other locally made products. In 2020, the couple unveiled a new-build brewhouse and taproom that’s no longer “tilted,” but it’s nevertheless a practical, relaxing setting for enjoying the fruits of Tilted Barn’s labor. Light and refreshing Lawn Boy Barn Lager hits the spot, whether you’ve arrived at the brewery after a hard day’s work or a beach day; and the hoppy beers are fresh and fantastic. Don’t miss the house-favorite Violet IPA, a hazy, 6.5% number that’s floral and citrusy. Take me there .

Buttonwoods Brewery

Credit: Tyler Machado

Buttonwoods Brewery

Newly relocated to an industrial annex inside a classic New England mill building in Cranston, Buttonwoods Brewery is endearingly rough around the edges. Mismatched furniture with tabletop games and a parking-lot beer garden is the vibe, typically set to a soundtrack of emo music. (So Rhode Island!) It’s a simple and comfortable setting—not to mention, dog-friendly—for a range of no-nonsense beers, such as a crisp Kolsch, Object Permanence IPA, or barrel-aged beauties. Visit on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday to match it with barbecue and other comfort food by Our Table , the in-house kitchen. On Fridays and Saturdays, you’ll also find Origin Beer Project in the house, an “alt prop,” or alternating proprietorship, a separate company that uses the same brewing equipment and shares taproom space. The collaborative, community spirit of this spot is what beer is all about. Take me there .

Origin Beer Project | Best Breweries in Rhode Island

Credit: Cheyne Tessier

Origin Beer Project

Origin Beer Project shares space with Buttonwoods Brewery, but it brings something totally different to the table. Launched in 2020 by married couple Erika and Cheyne Tessier, who had diverse beer-industry backgrounds (husband Cheyne is still a brewer at Buttonwoods), Origin crafts traditional styles like amber lagers and IPAs as well as creative brews like a 3% , fruity-red Dystopian Past Grisette and an imperial stout flavored with vanilla and beets. Starting something new during a global pandemic poses unique challenges, to be sure, but the alt-prop arrangement—where the Tessiers brew their own recipes on Buttonwoods’ equipment, and sell their own products in the taproom on Fridays and Saturdays—is giving Origin room to grow. Beer fans are better for it. Take me there .

Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island

Credit: David Bettencourt

Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island

The scenic, beachside community of Westerly, RI, is a stop on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional route and also home to Grey Sail Brewing . Since 2010, Grey Sail has been a respected craft brewery, known for its easy-drinking Flagship Cream Ale and the delicious double IPA, Captain’s Daughter. These cans with old-school labels are recognizable throughout New England, but visiting the Westerly taproom is a must. Located next door to Grey Sail’s former-factory brewery is a beautiful Victorian mansion, which has been lovingly restored into family-friendly tasting rooms with period details like mantle pieces and ornate crown molding. Outside the house is well-landscaped, with dog-friendly beer garden seating, an outdoor bar, and Vetrano’s Wood Fired Pizza on-site Wednesday through Sunday. Check the schedule for other visiting food trucks and live music. Take me there .

Welcome to The Beer Travel Guide! People often ask us where to drink craft beer when they visit various cities, so we decided to make a site that could hopefully help everyone looking for local craft when they travel.

You’ll find our detailed brewery hop recommendations for various American cities here. You’ll also find lists of breweries for a number of cities, lists which include valuable research like whether they serve food and what their hours of operation are. That way, you can make your own hop! If you don’t see the city you want to explore on there, contact us and let us know!

We also have pieces about beer festivals we’ve attended, wrapping up the experience and shouting out our favorite beers that were served. You can read our coverage of festivals we’ve covered in the past two years, including the Firestone Walker Invitational , Great American Beer Fest , Carnival of Caffeination , Sour Friends Fest , Extreme Beer Fest , and many more!

We’ve recently launched a TikTok account, posting daily funny and/or informative videos about craft beer. Please give us a follow there.

We have a list of every beer we’ve tried this year– we’ve already crossed 650 beers for the year, so see what we’ve had and what we recommend!

We’ll also post occasional blog entries, news stories, and more! Please check out our FAQ , and if you think our site is missing something or contains inaccurate information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Closures and hour changes are happening rapidly, so before assuming our information is fully accurate, always be sure to double check on the breweries’ social media accounts.

Finally, please sign up for the newsletter below– we haven’t been updating as much during the pandemic for obvious reasons, but when regular updates begin again (and they will soon), signing up for the newsletter is the best way to make sure you don’t miss out.

Thanks so much for visiting– we hope you come back soon, and we hope beer travels return to normal as soon as the world will allow. Cheers!

Revival Brewing Company

Revival Brewing Company in Providence is celebrating its 10 th anniversary this year, but founder Sean Larkin is a bonafide craft brew legend in the Ocean State. He served as Chief Brewing Officer at Trinity Brewhouse in Providence for a decade and was a consultant for legendary Narragansett Beer before opening Revival with partner Owen Johnson. They’ve developed more than 30 brews together and are known for “making beers the way they should be: bold, furious, and full of passion.”

Whalers is brewed, canned, and kegged right on site at their impressive facility on the historic Palisades Mill campus in South Kingston. Their taproom is the place to be as they not only offer glass, flight, and howlers (32 oz. growler), but you can and play corn hole, giant Jenga and pool there too. You can also BYO food or have some delivered right to the taproom. Can’t imagine not bringing your four legged friend? Dogs are welcome. Families too, before 6pm.

 Newport Craft + Distilling

Since its founding in 1999, Newport Craft has grown by leaps and bounds – including adding a comprehensive distilling business. Every IPA, pale ale, amber ale, sour, stout and spirit is brewed, canned and/or bottled from its welcoming Newport campus. You can tour the facility to watch where the magic is made, hang in the tasting room where you can still see the happenings in the facility, or perch yourself on the outdoor patio where there’s ample space to spread out, relax and sip.

Tilted Barn Brewery

brewery tours rhode island

Tilted Barn is Rhode Island’s first farm brewery. As the name implies, the small batch, hand-crafted ales here are made and tasted inside an authentic New England-style post and beam barn. Founders Matt and Kara Richardson founded Ocean State Hops in 2007, the state’s first commercial hop farm, on Exeter farmland tended by Kara’s family for more than five decades. The fruits of today’s labor are enjoyed via the many different offerings here and best enjoyed with the spoils of the many food trucks that visit!

Buttonwoods Brewery

One of the newer breweries in Rhode Island, Buttonwoods is centrally located in Cranston and crafts some amazing IPAs, lagers and barrel-aged beers, among other ales. Made in an old mill building, the brewery has opened “The Annex,” a tasting room and pick-up spot where folks can enjoy their latest creations. Your must-try is the Lionheart, a Saison-style beer that’s little fruity, a little spicy, and made with locally grown hops. With fun events including trivia and movie nights, Buttonwoods is always “hopping.”

Grey Sail Brewing

Rhode Island’s southernmost brewery, Grey Sail has a brewery, taproom and beer garden on their Westerly campus. In the tasting room, you’ll appreciate the architectural details of the tasting room which was built in the late 1920s as “The Westerly Macaroni Factory.” Mark it’s 10 th year in business, Grey  Sail’s Brewing’s  year-round beer offerings include Flying Jenny, an extra pale ale; Captain’s Daughter, a double IPA and more.

Proclamation Ale Company

Located in Warwick, Proclamation Ale likes to push the envelope by constantly testing new beer styles and techniques. The result is usually unique, delicious beers and the proof of demand is in their meteoric growth over the past eight years. They call their 2,000 sq. ft. room filled with large oak foeders and oak barrels ‘Oakville’ and it’s where they have mastered fine-tuned sour and wild ales. It’s a fun brewery to visit with trivia and food truck – and always a new concoction!

Ragged Island Brewing Co.

In just five short years, Ragged Island Brewing Co. has grown from a small tasting room with a one barrel system to a 37 acre farm with a beer garden, large events and plenty of room to roam. Owners Matt and Katie Gray are working toward opening a fully renovated a 3,600 square foot post and beam barn on the property but in the meantime, you can enjoy no less than a dozen awesome Ragged Island ales.

Plan ahead – book your private group tour today! Private group tours can be arranged for Newport and Providence, giving you and your group a personalized foodie experience. Perfect for bachelor and bachelorette parties, birthdays, anniversaries, alumni events, and more.

Sample local beers at the House of Brews, in partnership with the Rhode Island Brewers Guild

The RI Home Show is back for its 75th year, and we’re thrilled to announce that the House of Brews feature is returning along with it! Attendees of the RI Home Show will get the chance to sample local beers from breweries within the Guild. This experience marks another way that the RI Home Show showcases an ever-growing local business trend in Southern New England.

The RI Brewers Guild was established in 2013 with five founding breweries and brewpubs. Rosemary’s Wish Kids Playhouses

We are excited to collaborate with the Rhode Island Builders Association and join their efforts by displaying our playhouses in the Rhode Island Home Show! The craftsmanship, hard work, and skill of these school students will shine in their designs. After the Home Show, these playhouses will be moved to Bryant University and concealed in anticipation of the official Rosemary’s Wish Kids Playhouses reveal. This heartwarming event brings many surprises for the parents and children as they see these playhouses for the first time at the big reveal. Here, students meet the child and family for the first time and experience their joy, laughter, and excitement! After this momentous occasion, these playhouses get delivered to the child’s yard, where they can enjoy them for years to come. Our playhouses’ impact on these children’s lives is truly a wish granted!
