Our advice: plan your itinerary before leaving home. That way you won't waste precious seconds standing on a street corner deciding where to go next. Note: The best time to visit New York City is between April and June or September through November. This way, you'll avoid the sweltering temps and smell of rotting garbage that permeate the city in summer, and the crowds and high prices that permeate this season.

Before settling in for one of Shenandoah's beautiful hiking trails , visit one of the park's two visitor centers: Dickey Ridge or Harry F. Byrd . The park covers a whopping 200,000 acres, so you'll want a map to help guide you.

Not big on hiking? Don't worry, there are 400 miles worth of trails to choose from in varying forms of length and intensity. Beginners will favor Traces , which is less than two miles each way, while a more advanced hiker may opt for the more strenuous White Oak Canyon (over nine miles return).

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit on the East Coast.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this weekend getaway on the East Coast, you absolutely can.

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

• The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
• The Renwick: Offering stylish residential-style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high-class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

• CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
• Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Where to Stay in Baltimore

• The Inn at Henderson’s Wharf : Housed in a warehouse-turned-charming-hotel, you can find the popular Inn at Henderson’s Wharf at the end of a delightful cobblestone street in Fells Point.
• Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore : Housed in the former B&O Railroad Headquarters, walking into the opulent lobby of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore feels like stepping back in time–and the rooms are incredibly comfortable, too

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

• Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
• StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

• Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

• Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
• The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
• Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

• Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
• The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Away from its iconic theme parks, though, there is still plenty to do in Central Florida!

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

The USA is packed with bucket list cities, parks and attractions but if you’re looking for the best of the west coast we have 25 favorite spots or the best of the east coast, keep reading!

1. Dry Tortugas National Park, Flordia: This national park off the coast of Florida is comprised of islands and features an abundance of marine and bird life!

2. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts : This little gem of an island is in the south of Massachusetts and has the cutest colonial style.

3. Baltimore, Maryland : This city is quirky, it’s adorable, it’s charming – that’s why they call it Charm City – and it’s well worth the stop.

4. Atlantic City, New Jersey : Known as the Las Vegas of the east, Atlantic City offers casinos, wide beaches, and boardwalks.

5. Savannah Historic District, Georgia:  Spanish moss trees adorn this district and make it appear otherworldly. (pictured below)

6. Watkins Glen State Park, New York : With gorgeous gorges and waterfalls, Watkins Glen State Park is quite the adventure.

I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

Yes it is one of my absolute favorite places, so gorgeous! 🙂

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

New York , one of the East Coast major cities, is a vibrant mixture of art, food, fashion, and entertainment. It is one of the best East Coast cities with a myriad of iconic things to see and do. 

The Empire State Building stands 380 meters high, and its main observation deck is on the 86th floor. It is still the 44th highest skyscraper in the world and is spectacular to visit at night (open till 02.00). The One World Trade Centre is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. The 93-meter high Statue of Liberty is another must-see. You can get there by ferry, and there is also a museum that is worth visiting.

A trip yo New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Central Park one of the absolute must-see places on the East Coats. It sits in the middle of Manhattan and is huge with 25,000 trees, a lake, ponds and fountains. The easiest way to explore is on foot or by metro. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art backs onto Fifth Avenue and contains 5,000 years of art from all over the world – if you love art, it could take you a whole day to see it all! Other places to visit include the Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, and Brooklyn Bridge plus the myriad of different shops. Grab an early dinner because Broadway is a must-do in the evening – there are 41 shows to choose from!

I recommend staying in Hotel 32 32 situated in the heart of Mid-town East, just one block from the subway and within walking distance of Times Square and other famous landmarks. Rooms are contemporarily styled with marble bathrooms and flat-screen TV, and many have a small kitchen.

Washington, DC 

No travel to East Coast USA is complete without a visit to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – one of the best cities on the East Coast. This beautiful and historic city is located 5 hours south of New York City on the East Coast. DC is best known for its politics and historic landmarks, but it is also a city filled with vibrant neighbourhoods, incredible nature and great food.

Must see locations include walking on the National Mall and taking in the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, White House, and Capitol building. Tip : Make sure you check them out at night when there are fewer crowds and beautiful photo ops! 

Take time to explore one or two of the free 18 Smithsonian museums and galleries in the city. If exploring outdoors is more your interest, you can’t go wrong visiting Rock Creek Park located in the middle of the city with 2000 acres of lovely trails and bridges. 

Off the tourist path, check Union Market in NE and the lively H Street Corridor with some of the best local restaurants. You can even take the only free Streetcar up and down H Street. (Highly recommend Toki Underground or Maketto).

Washington, DC, has  many great hotels  at all price points. The best mid-budget hotel with a fabulous location is the Hyatt House at the Wharf in Southwest DC. It is close to downtown offers suites with kitchenettes and waterfront views!

Boston, one of the biggest East Coast cities of USA is also one of the oldest settlements in the USA. It was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula, Atlantic Ocean in 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English town of the same name. The best place to start your visit is downtown. From South Station, where you will probably arrive in the city, visit Chinatown first and Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. Continue to the north to find the Freedom Trail that comprises American Revolution sites set on a path marked with red lines on the 2.5-mile sidewalk. It starts at the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, and ends at the famed Bunker Hill Monument. 

If you are a baseball fan, you should head west and visit Fenway Park with almost 38,000 seats, home to the Red Sox team since 1912. It hosted the World Series 11 times. 

Boston is also home to the centre of knowledge with some of the best schools and universities including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lesley University, and Hult International Business School in Cambridge.

New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the best East Coast cities for bubbling excitement and history at every turn. With some of the most delicious food and drinks in the country, fantastic music and very entertaining nightlife – it really is one of the best places to travel on the East Coast, that often gets overlooked!

Top things to do here include taking a food tour. It’s a great way to get a sampling of all the local cuisines and learn the difference between Creole and Cajun cooking. See a live jazz show – New Orleans is the place where jazz was born. Here, you’ll find many incredible live jazz shows at night. Take a cemetery tour – NOLA’s historical tombs are above ground (due to the high water table). They are actually quite beautiful and interesting to see. In fact, New Orleans is one of the best East Coast vacation destinations for foodies and jazz fans!

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Royal Sonesta is a nice hotel in a prime location. Pro tip: if you pick a room on the Bourbon Street side, you’ll have some fun views, but it will be LOUD at night. (They provide earplugs, but just an FYI. Bourbon Street is crazy until the sunrises!) Another great option is to stay at one of the many awesome  Airbnbs in New Orleans .

· Café Du Monde – for the best beignets!

· Brennan’s – for a fine dining experience with some yummy Creole dishes on the menu. Be sure to also try the Bananas Foster.

Chicago 

Chicago is a city that fantastically blends old and new, modern and historic – an absolute must-see city on your East Coast travel. A three day stay in Chicago  is enough to just scratch the surface, but it would easily be possible to spend longer here. Staying around the Magnificent Mile is an excellent idea because you’re mostly walking distance to downtown and attractions like Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk.  

In winter, Chicago can be bitterly cold, but so rewarding. Lake Michigan freezes over and looks utterly magical from up close at Oak Street Beach. In summer months, the same spot transforms from a winter wonderland into a lovely small swimming beach with fantastic city views.  

Millennium Park is a huge drawcard to Chicago, and most visitors will be familiar with the bean-shaped reflective Cloudgate sculpture that has become synonymous with the city. But Millennium Park has much more to offer including a winter ice-skating rink and an installation called the Crown Fountain which features faces of Chicago residents projected on two pillars at opposite ends of a reflecting pool.  

The food of Chicago is also a huge drawcard. Visitors absolutely cannot leave the city without trying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza or a Chicago-style hotdog from the iconic hot dog restaurant Portillo’s.

Austin, Texas, is one of the best places to visit on the East Coast of USA. Located in the middle of the state, Austin is known for its excellent barbecue, bat colony, and the pink granite capitol building.

If you’re looking to best things to do on the East Coast for wildlife, you may have heard of the bats underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. The bridge crosses the Colorado River in the middle of the city and is home to over 1.5 million bats. 

During the spring and summer, venture out to Lady Bird Lake or the Colorado River around dusk, you’ll be treated to a view of the largest bat colony in the world leaving their home in search of dinner. 

Amongst other unique sights in the city, Austin is also home to a pink capitol building. Florida has many top-notch attractions, and  Disney World  is one of the most unique and best places to vacation on the East Coast for families. There’s nothing like it anywhere else. The other Disney parks are special, but Disney World tops them all.

Florida Gulf Coast

Florida Gulf Coast destinations regularly occupy the top spots in articles that rank vest vacation spots on the East Coast and best places to live on the East Coast. From Clearwater Beach at the top to Marco Island at the southern end, the Florida Gulf Coast. Still, it remains an underrated vacation spot for world travellers throughout the year. 

Visitor favourite highlights include phenomenal sugar sand beaches, magnificent sunsets, fun water activities, collecting seashells, creative and modern coastal cuisine, and convenient access to one of the world’s most unique environments—Everglades National Park.

The Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is by far, one of the best places to go in the East Coast and  the most beautiful places to visit in Texas.  It’s a large expanse of land between Austin and San Antonio featuring rolling green hills, rivers, historic small towns, and Texas’ wine region. 

Some destinations like Hamilton Pool and the distilleries in Dripping Springs or the original location Salt Lick BBQ can be visited as a day trip from Austin. But with so much beauty to discover, the Hill Country is one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. 

Rent a car and hit the road to explore the region’s small towns and the beautiful scenery in between. Fredericksburg is the most popular in the area and a great place to use as a base. 

Highway 290 leading into town is lined with vineyards, try Predernales and Becker for some of the state’s best wine and views!. 

Hike Enchanted Rock and try authentic German food downtown. Just 15 minutes outside of Fredericksburg is Luckenbach. This historic town hosts live music on the back patio of its original post office turned honkey-tonk bar. 

Another must-see historic small town is Gruene. It’s home to the oldest dance hall in Texas and regularly hosts some of the state’s most popular musicians. Dine at the Gristmill next door for a delicious dinner perched on the cliffs over the river.  

For accommodation, there are a few beautiful B&B’s in Gruene like the Gruene Mansion Inn . Otherwise, Airbnb is an excellent option with rental homes dotting the landscape with stunning views throughout the Hill Country.

Most Beautiful National Parks on the East Coast

Acadia national park.

Arcadia National Park is one of the best places to travel in the East Coast for adventure lovers.

There is no one perfect time to visit Acadia, but if you are going to visit, their summer boasts the best weather and the highest temperatures (as well as the highest number of visitors). 

As one of the oldest National Parks, Acadia preserves some of the most rugged coastline of the North Atlantic United States. Named for the early French settlers to the area, the Acadian wilderness boats beautiful hills, forests, and seas teeming with wildlife (particularly the lobster that the state is famous for). 

Among some of the highlights to Acadia is some of the best hiking in the northeast and getting to see the first rays of light in the US from the peak of Cadillac Mountain. 

No park in the northeast compares to Acadia’s size and diversity, and it’s the only park designated as a “National Park” in this region of the United States. 

If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the popular hikes such as the precipice and beehive trails, although they are maybe tough for those afraid of heights and exposed cliffs. 

There are great trails along the water and among the hills around Jordan Pond for some more relaxing hikes. For those with more time, a visit to Schoodic Peninsula and Isle Au Haut, which are beautiful and fare less touristed than the park’s main areas.

Everglades National Park

The World Heritage Site of the Everglades National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. A vibrant ecosystem, located in the sunny state of Florida, located only 1.5 hours west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, it makes a great side trip to visit this heaven for lovers of outdoor activities. With loads of nature, many hiking trails to choose from, and water activities like the traditional airboat. 

During your trip to the Everglades, one of the East Coast must see places is the  Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge , the second largest mangrove forest in the world forming fascinating labyrinths of water and islands with very rich wildlife, including some endangered species. 

When you are in the area, explore the Everglades City, a charming fishing village with a population of 443 people, with great food, and a long history. It is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. 

The Everglade City is located on the western gateway to Everglades National Park, nearby Chokoloskee Island. If you are looking to spend a few days exploring this incredible area, the  Ivey House Everglades Adventures Hotel  is a great option. 

The best time to visit is between October and May when the weather is cooler and drier. The temperature and the humidity levels are lower, the mosquitoes are not around, and hurricane season has passed. During this time, the average temperature ranging between max 78.4°F (25.8°C) and min 59.7°F (15.4°C). 

It is also the best time to see the local wildlife. This is the time that manatees migrate to the Everglades. Also, the water levels drop during the dry season, and a large number of animals congregate around the water holes, making wildlife viewing an easy endeavour. 

If you visit during the summertime, between June and September, book your hikes and outdoor adventures for the morning, to avoid the hottest parts of the day and the frequent summer storms in the afternoon. Everglades National Park is one of the most beautiful places to vacation on East Coast.

Shenandoah National Park

One of the most beautiful places to go in East Coast United States is less than 2 hours from Washington, DC. Shenandoah National Park stretches along a ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering scenic views, classic park lodges, and excellent hiking. 

Skyline Drive winds along the mountain ridge for 105 miles and is the centrepiece of the park. Along the drive, 75 overlooks give easy access to eastern and westward views of the Virginia mountains and valleys. Over 100 trails, including the iconic Appalachian Trail, criss-cross the park. 

Many of the best things to do are in  Shenandoah National Park’s Central District . Here you can stay in either of two lodges, Skyland or Big Meadows, and explore the park’s natural and historic sites. Both lodges have restaurants for dining with a view and meals to-go. 

Popular hikes in the area include Stony Man, Dark Hollow Falls, Mary’s Rock, Hawksbill, and the wheelchair accessible Limberlost Trail. Visit the Harry Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows to learn about the park’s nature, the people who once lived here, and the effort to build Skyline Drive. 

Shenandoah is a year-round destination, but most facilities close in the winter. Late spring and early fall are two of the best times to visit when mountain laurel and fall foliage colour the views.

Silver Springs State Park, Florida

If you’re looking for the best places to visit on the sunshine coast, you’re in luck.  Florida is filled with hidden gems like Silver Springs State Park .  Tucked into the Ocala National Forest, this blue lagoon is naturally heated by underwater thermal vents. At only $6 a person for admission, you would think this haven would be overrun with tourists, but fortunately for you, it remains a secret to most travellers. 

You should plan to spend one whole day in the springs and be sure to bring a snorkel. Manatees frequent Silver Spring State Park lagoon during the winter months to keep warm, and it’s not uncommon to have the opportunity to swim with them. Even without the manatees, the clear blue water and a plethora of fish make for some good snorkelling and free diving. If you have a kayak or wish to rent one you can also leave the lagoon and explore the maze of mangroves that cut through Floridas’ centre. 

Most local Floridians spend the day swimming and BBQing during the hot and humid summer months, but the Silver Springs State Park is a perfect and stunningly beautiful destination to visit year-round.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

When it comes to National Parks in Texas, Big Bend National Park takes the cake. From hiking its high-elevation peaks, exploring the arid desert and lush-green valleys, taking a dip in its natural hot springs, beautiful stargazing, camping, and even a potential stop in Mexico for lunch, Big Bend National Park is one of the best places to vacation on the East Coast.

What makes Big Bend National Park so popular?

Big Bend is one of the largest parks in North America with over 800,000 acres to explore. Seclusion and quiet are guaranteed here. With its vastness, comes a diverse ecosystem which includes the Rio-Grande river, the Chihuahuan Desert and the Chisos mountain range. Each part of the park has a drastically different climate, flora, and fauna. It also boasts of one of the darkest night skies of any national park in the lower 48 states and is considered one of the best places to go stargazing.

Some of the must-see things to do in Big Bend: 

Go hiking at some of its excellent trails – There are a lot of hiking trails within the park ranging from easy to hard. Some of these are stroller accessible as well. 

Cross the border into Boquillas, Mexico: Big Bend is along the US-Mexico border, so you can take a boat ride into Boquillas Mexico which is a great day trip and highly recommended. Don’t forget your passport.

Go on a drive on the scenic along Ross Maxwell Drive: You can enjoy Big Bend from the confines of your car by taking the beautiful Ross Maxwell drive. 

Visit the Mc. Donald’s observatory: The star parties here are very popular with kids and adults alike. Don’t miss an opportunity to see the planets up close at one of these. 

Visit the Ghost town of Terlingua: The nearby town of Terlingua has some awesome food, lodging and ruins in its ghost town to explore. Enjoy a fun evening here.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There is no doubt that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the United States and one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. This area is located along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. The mountains are part of the Southern Appalachians. This is America’s most visited national park, but it is huge, so you will definitely be able to feel as if you are away from the bustle of everyday life.

The park has ridge upon ridge of seeming endless swaths of forest-covered mountains. The ever-present morning fog settles in the folds of these ridges to give this area the nickname “The Smoky Mountains.”

You will find many activities in this area. The hardest part will be choosing what to do. There are auto tour routes, bicycling, fishing, hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding, and much more.

This park is world-renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life. It is considered a biologists paradise. One of the most popular things to do in the park is to observe wildlife, including elk and black bear. You will also be able to see old settler’s towns from the early 1800s to get a feel for what life was like in these mountains in the past.

Another fun activity is waterfall chasing. There are innumerable waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some are just a short walk off a roadway, and others are deep in woods down hard to find trails. The waterfalls in the park are simply stunning.

Most Beautiful Islands of the United States

Oahu, hawaii.

Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in the USA. It’s got the perfect climate, amazing landscapes and friendly locals. While you can be pretty happy visiting any of the Hawaiin Islands you should put Oahu to the top of your list. It is slightly less touristy than some of the other islands, especially if you stay on the North Shore, and it has some of the most ruggedly beautiful scenery. 

The North Shore is a mecca for surfers, and you’ll notice the laid-back surf vibes as soon as you arrive. The pace of life doesn’t move too quickly up there, which is a great way to live. One of the main attractions on the island of Oahu is Kualoa Regional Park, where the original Jurassic Park was filmed. 

You can go on a quad tour through the park or simply enjoy the views from a distance at the beach on the north end of Kaneohe Bay. The mountains here are formed into deep ridges covered in tropical greenery that truly gives off the Jurassic Park feel. From the beach, you’ll also get a cool view out over the water towards Mokoli’i island. 

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach to spend the day on then head to Lanikai Beach where you’ll find white sand and crystal-clear blue water. This is also one of the most protected beaches on the island, making it ideal for swimming, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. You’ll also get a great view out to the Mokalua Islands right from the palm tree-lined beach. 

The Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach but also has a huge pool for you to relax in. You can find it near the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of the island.

Kauai, Hawaii

The most beautiful destination in the USA has to be Kauai, Hawaii. It’s an island full of adventure and relaxation. With majestic coastlines and lush forests, white sand beaches and deep canyons, Kauai, Hawaii has got to be on your USA Bucket list!

This tiny island chain is known for its swaying palm trees, laid-back culture and beautiful beaches. In fact,  Kauai’s beaches  are some of the best in all of Hawaii. Offering incredible snorkelling, huge wintertime waves and plenty of surfing and boogie boarding, you could spend days beach-hopping on Kauai.

Perhaps even more unique than the beaches in Kauai are its mountainous terrain. The Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It’s massive, multi-coloured canyon makes its way from the island’s centre down to the ocean. 

The NaPali Coast along the northern shore is rugged, gorgeous and a truly breathtaking experience. Giant, jagged cliffs reach out of the sea up to the sky. The unexplored forests and waterfalls make for a truly unique destination.

Of course, all the beauty comes with a price. The best ways to see Kauai, Hawaii on a budget is to wait for affordable flights and find inexpensive accommodations. You will find the best deals on vacation properties and condos versus hotels.

Sanibel Island 

If your dream US destination includes a secluded tropical island and  beautiful beaches, Sanibel Island  may be just what you’re looking for. Tucked away just off Ft. Myers on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sanibel is a small barrier island, separated by a tiny inlet from its sister island of Captiva just next door.

These islands are a world away from the bustling nearby cities of Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples, and offer one of the best getaways in the US for a relaxed family gathering or romantic escape.

There’s plenty to enjoy on Sanibel if you love world-class shopping and dining. But it’s the quieter more natural attractions that draw most visitors — like cycling along quiet bike paths that run the entire length of the island or kayaking the JN “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Mackinac Island, Michigan 

Are you looking to visit the most beautiful destination in the USA? Hands down, the place is Mackinac Island, Michigan. Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state, this magical island is just about eight miles around and requires a ferry to get there. 

But wait, there’s more! The real impressive part of this island is that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is done by foot, bike or horse and carriage. It is like stepping back in time. This is a top  travel bucket list  destination in the Midwest but is increasing in visibility around the world. 

Some of the must-do activities on the island are: a carriage tour to get the full overview of history and layout of the land, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, a rum runner form the Pink Pony, definitely walk around and taste fudge from all the shops – the island is known for its famous fudge, watch a sunrise on the lawn of Mission Point Resort and sunset from the West Bluff or the porch of the Grand Hotel, rent a bike and ride the outskirts of the island, visit Arch Rock, eat fancy for an evening at The Woods Restaurant, and if you are there during the Lilac Festival, take it all in. 

Popular dishes on the island include white fish anything (dip, sandwiches, spreads, etc.) and the pecan ball served at Grand Hotel restaurants.

Nantucket is a charming island which lies 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Along with Cape Cod and  Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket  has a well-earned reputation as an idyllic summer vacation destination.

Nantucket is easily accessible from the mainland and Martha’s Vineyard by ferry or plane. Thanks to the need to organise a flight or a ferry, the summer crowds on Nantucket are much less than on mainland Cape Cod. There are only about 10,000 year-round residents, and the population increases to about 50,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket is a small and fairly flat island which is easy to explore by foot or by cycle. There are two towns on the island with a long and narrow shape (approximately 15 miles long by 3 miles wide). It’s perfect for people who love the outdoors with hiking, cycling and water activities, such as kayaking and surfing. It’s easy to rent bicycles as well as water sports equipment. There are about 30 public beaches to explore as well. 

Historically, Nantucket was influential in the whale trade, which made the island very wealthy. Nowadays, there is a whaling museum and three lighthouses that attest to its maritime importance. Today, the island’s wealth is mainly derived from tourism to a well-heeled crowd. 

There are luxury hotels and charming B&B’s for accommodation as well as plenty of boutique shops and restaurants. The vibe is preppy chic. 

Located in a historic Greek Revival building, we like the Periwinkle Inn B&B which has a great location in town within walking distance of many activities. Created from a former lifesaving station, the HI Nantucket Hostel is also renowned for being very nice with a great location.

Best Places to Visit on the East Coast

The East Coast has a lot to offer including historical attractions, beautiful beaches and stunning coastline, national parks and mountains, incredible fall foliage, charming towns and large must see cities.

Some of these must see places I have already visited and recommend and the rest are places that I have added to my personal East Coast USA bucket list for future travel. So read on if you are looking for inspiration and ideas for your next East Coast vacation or road trip.

What States are in the East Coast?

The East Coast includes all the coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The East Coast region of the USA also includes Vermont, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia even though they do not have coastal access to the Atlantic.

Here are the best places to visit in the East Coast . I have included at least one destination from every state to make it easier to plan an East Coast USA road trip .

Maine Bucket List

• Explore Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, one of the best National Parks in the US. Here is a self guided driving tour you can use to explore the park.

• Visit Portland, a charming coastal city packed with historic landmarks.
• Visit Kennebunkport, a historic coastal town in southern Maine known for its beaches and being home to the summer home of the Bush family.

New Hampshire Bucket List

• Explore the stunning White Mountains, a mountain range with many hiking spots of all levels.
• Drive Kancamagus Highway , a 34.5 mile scenic drive along Route 112 and one of the best New England drives for fall foliage. For those that prefer not to drive, you can visit on a fall foliage day trip tour from Boston .

Vermont Bucket List

The 10 Best Cities to Visit on the East Coast

East Coast versus West Coast. It’s an argument that has gone on for over a hundred years, and it will go on for as long as the United States exists. These two sides of one of the world’s biggest and best countries are very different in a lot of ways, and everyone seems to have their preference as to which is better.

Personally, I love visiting the west but I don’t think anything beats living on the East Coast. Being from here and having visited every major city between Maine and Florida, I’d say I have had the chance to formulate my opinions on which cities are the best to visit on the East Coast. Here is my list.

10. Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

While these is technically two cities, they always tend to go hand in hand. Raleigh and Durham are located just a few miles apart from one another, and while neither is an especially big city, there is a lot going on here. Three of the most notable universities on the East Coast – Duke University , the University of North Carolina , and North Carolina State University – are all located here. Because of the huge student body and young professional community here, the cities have molded themselves to cater to younger crowds, meaning great bars, cafes, and places to hang out.

Because of the prestigious universities in the area and the alumni bases that have stuck around, many fantastic museums have sprung up. From the North Carolina Museum of Art and the North Carolina Museum of History to the Marbles Kids Museum , there is a lot of great learning to be had. This city’s museums have nothing on the ones in this list’s number one city!

9. Charleston, South Carolina

Located in the state right to the south of Raleigh-Durham, Charleston is quickly becoming a favorite among visitors. While it is the smallest city on this list by a really wide margin, this little city packs a punch. Known for its beautiful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, Charleston offers some big-city amenities with a small-city feel.

With a population of only about 150,000 people, Charleston hardly even counts as a medium-sized city. Nevertheless, its location on the coastline in South Carolina coupled with the rapid boom that the city is seeing makes Charleston one of the best cities to visit on the East Coast!

If you’re thinking of visiting Charleston, I recommend bundling the trip with a visit to Myrtle Beach , which is quickly becoming one of the top beach destinations on the East Coast.

8. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is honestly underrated as a city. While it is predominantly known for its massive theme parks – like Disney World , Universal , and Epcot – there is so much more to this central Florida city. While the theme parks are the best in the world and are worth a visit at least once in your life, they are not the only thing that Orlando has to offer.

The presence of these parks has spiked the tourism that Orlando sees, and the city has capitalized really well on this increased traffic by investing largely in other markets of tourism like sporting events, concerts, and a wide range of restaurants.

After all, tourists come first for the theme parks, but they come a second time because of all the other things that Orlando has to offer!

7. Baltimore, Maryland

Don’t sleep on Baltimore . While it tends to get a bad rap for its high crime rates and poor economic situation, this doesn’t tell the full story of the city.

There are definitely problems in Baltimore, and it certainly has some parts that aren’t the nicest, but there are so many redeeming qualities that make Baltimore an awesome city to visit. Due to its proximity to some other cities on this list, taking a side trip to Baltimore isn’t that hard, either!

If you decide to head to Baltimore, the one thing that you absolutely must do is head to Inner Harbor . Inner Harbor is widely considered to be the nicest area in Baltimore. It sits right along the harbor and is the host of many great restaurants and attractions, like the aquarium and the observatory .

If you’re looking for a bite to eat or a place to grab a drink, either head to Power Plant Live ! or the Guinness Open Gate Brewery , which is the only Guinness brewery in the United States.

6. Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina , otherwise known as the Queen City, is personally one of my favorite cities on the East Coast. The city is growing rapidly which is a plus, but it has been a fantastic place to visit since long before its boom.

As one of the most easygoing, clean, and friendly cities I have visited in the United States, Charlotte is a place that is very accepting of visitors and very fun to explore. With a population of over half a million people, Charlotte has a little bit for everyone.

From several professional sports teams like the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets , to the NASCAR Hall of Fame , to the incredible barbecue restaurants scattered around the city, you’re bound to have a great visit here. What sticks out to me the most about Charlotte is just how clean and open it is – imagine wide city blocks and beautifully clean streets. Nice people, great food, a beautiful city, and lots of fun.

5. Boston, Massachusetts

Oh, Boston. Boston is one of the first cities to really spring up in the United States, as its history goes back centuries. As one of the beating hearts of the American Revolution, Boston is one of the most historic cities in the entire country.

A visit to Boston today is filled with tributes to its historic roots. The Freedom Walk is the best example of this, and it is a marked path that winds through the city and stops at some of the most important places in American history. From where Paul Revere yelled “The British are coming” to where the colonist dumped tea into the Boston Harbor, history is very well preserved in the heart of New England.

Boston offers a lot more than just history, though. Firstly, the seafood up there is incredible. New England clam chowder, anyone? Lobster rolls? Additionally, my favorite major brewery, Sam Adams , is located here, and the brewery tour is probably the best one I’ve ever been on – and it’s free.

Boston has great cultural districts to explore, endless history to learn, great sporting events to attend, and some of the world’s top universities in Harvard and MIT . You can’t go wrong by choosing to take a trip to Boston.

4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Okay, this one is personal. You know how they say that everyone has “their city?” As in, the one they either lived in or visited all the time as a kid? For me, that is Philly. I feel like a lot of people forget about Philadelphia , and this is probably because it is so close to the country’s biggest city, New York. Philadelphia is the fifth or sixth biggest city in the country, though, and passing on it is a big mistake. After all, it was the first capital of the United States, and it is probably the most historic city in the country!

But specifically, why should you visit Philadelphia? Frankly, the food and museums are easily the best part (unless you’re a sports fan). Philly cheesesteaks , anyone?

On top of just that local delicacy, the food scene in Philly really is great. From Italian food, to one of the best Chinatowns on the East Coast, to all of the Lancaster County Amish and Mennonite food coming in from the middle of the state, the food here really is spectacular. Just visit Reading Terminal Market and you’ll see. Checking out Dilworth Park around Christmas time is a good idea, too!

3. Miami, Florida

How could Miami not be this high on the list? To be honest, I thought about putting it one slot higher on this list. Miami is really incredible. I think one of the best things about Miami is that you can experience several different worlds while you’re there. What do I mean by that?

Firstly, Miami is a super Latino city, and the amount of Spanish, Latin American, and Caribbean culture here is incredible. Secondly, the range of prices and income levels is extremely wide, meaning you have some of the richest of the rich in among the rest of us normal folk everywhere in the city.

One way to sum that up is by saying there are very few places in the world where you can find $50 tacos, but Miami is probably one of them.

Miami is more than just Latino flare, though. It is world renowned for its offerings in the way of arts and fashion. Some of the biggest art and fashion shows in the world are held here, and the city is probably the second or third most international place on the East Coast as a result.

Miami Beach is such a cool place and you’d be remiss if you decided to skip Miami. As far as I am concerned, Miami is the number one place to visit in Florida without any question or debate.

2. New York City, New York

Wow, New York isn’t the top city on this list? No, it is not!

Still, New York is a really incredible place to visit, and it is normally the first place that people mention wanting to visit on their first trip to the United States. New York’s name just has a flare to it that few other places in the world have, and this flare brings tourists from every corner of the world.

This is probably because when the United States was on a tear towards being the world’s superpower, New York was the center of class and culture in the nation. So as the United States climbed to world power and fame, so did New York.

Nowadays, I feel like New York isn’t quite as incredible as it was back then, but it is still worth the trip. I think that part of what made New York so great was how it was always alive and ahead of the times, but now that so many big cities have sprung up, I don’t think it holds much of an edge over places like Miami.

As a tourist, though, there are so many things to see. Check out a show on Broadway , go for a stroll through Central Park , take a ferry out to the Statue of Liberty , and ride The Bull on Wall Street, at least!

1. Washington, D.C.

Does this surprise anyone? Washington D.C . takes the cake as my top city to visit in the United States, and there are a few reasons why.

Firstly, there is no US city with a better set of museums than Washington D.C.

There are museums around the world that are better than individual museums in Washington D.C., but there is no single city that can outdo the entire Smithsonian system. It is the top museum curation in the entire world and that is pretty much indisputable when you look at just how many museums are in it.

Washington D.C. is more than just museums though, and it is definitely a lot more than just politics. This city is truly alive and buzzing with action, from big businesses everywhere to beautiful parks and hip districts.

It’s also extremely clean for such a big city, which is really important to me when I evaluate places.

Before moving to the area I had no idea how much there really was to do other than check out the White House and the museums. Areas like Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan are super fun neighborhoods in D.C., while suburbs like Bethesda , Maryland and Arlington , Virginia are some of the coolest suburbs in the country.

Really, they’re their own satellite cities. If you are looking for a single place on the East Coast to visit that has great dining, activities to fill your day, and stunning green spaces scattered all throughout, Washington D.C. is the place for you.

“Fall road trippers should consider Boonsboro, Maryland , a town I visited this week. This charming small town, all dolled up for fall, has a walkable downtown area with a well-known pizzeria, inn, and tap house from Nora Roberts’s  Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy.  Roberts is from Boonsboro, where you will find the largest selection of her world-famous published books at  Turn the Page Bookstore  and much more. Try seasonal craft beer from Dan’s Restaurant & Tap House and cross your fingers that they have butternut squash soup on the fall menu.

“Leaf peeping is a popular outdoor activity, as is hiking to the first Washington Monument at Washington Monument State Park. It is an easy walk from the parking lot and on the Appalachian Trail. “Although thought of as a summer destination, Virginia Beach can be enjoyed in the fall. After Labor Day, vacation crowds have thinned out, water becomes a little cooler, and beaches on the South end of the East Coast are quieter. For me, this is an ideal time.

“Enjoy long walks along the beach and lunch at one of the local eateries. Head to Famous Al’s for one of their classic hot dogs with fixings. Slurp oysters at Chick’s Oyster Bar . My personal favorite is the mac and cheese at BoBo’s Fine Chicken whose recipes have been handed down from both family and friends.

13. Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina

“ Hanging Rock State Park  is 30 miles north of Winston-Salem. The park has more than 7,000 acres set in the Sauratown Mountains. Peaks here reach 2,500 feet. There are waterfalls, streams, and a lake. Hiking trails are a fantastic way to view the fall leaves on the rolling hills. Many of the trails here are moderate to strenuous, but there are a couple of ‘easy’ trails for strolling. The lake has great picture-taking angles. 16. Amelia Island, Florida

“ Amelia Island is the perfect fall getaway on the East Coast. It is a gorgeous location year round, but in fall, you have a very tranquil, uncrowded beach with lots of wide-open outdoor space.

“A barrier island just off the coast of northeast Florida, you will find your own little piece of paradise when you visit in the fall. The soft white sand won’t burn your feet, the pristine water is still warm, and the crowds are gone. The temperature in fall is in the 70s up to mid-80s.

“Historic downtown showcases some excellent specialty shops, eateries with all kinds of cuisines, the oldest bar in Florida, and more. Abundant outdoor activities include fishing, sailing, biking, hiking, golfing, and horseback riding on the beach. Take a historic tour or hit the spa. I just love walking on the beach and reading a book while sitting by the ocean. You can relax and savor the quiet and the wonders of the East Coast nature.

17. The Florida Keys

“Fall is a special time to visit the East Coast Florida Keys . The heat is less oppressive, the crowds are smaller, and there are lots of events planned to lure visitors during this normally slow time of the year on the East Coast.

“ Fantasy Fest in Key West draws the biggest crowds. It’s highlighted by outrageous events and costumes, body painting, and lots of alcohol. The nine-day non-stop party in October is decidedly LGBTQ-friendly. There is a clothing-optional pool party for men. Women are encouraged to ‘ Rock the Tatas ,’ with the best tatas winning a $500 prize. Just about every bar in town has live music every night. This is not the place for bashful people.

“Things are a little tamer elsewhere in the Keys. Key Largo hosts REEF Fest in October, with sports diving on the offshore reef. In November you’ll find true gluttony at the Stone Crab Claw eating contest in Marathon. The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first week in December.

18. North Conway, New Hampshire

North Conway, a picturesque village located in the town of Conway is a place I love visiting in the summer. But the fall season is stunningly beautiful there, and there’s still plenty to do. To put it simply, in North Conway, you will get a complete New Hampshire fall package. From scenic train rides and historic general stores to massive corn mazes and all the apple cider and donuts you can consume, you’ll experience everything. 

It’s a very good destination for the outdoorsy types, although, with the lack of sales tax, I find that shopping in Settlers Green Outlet Village is an ever-growing attraction.

Several years ago, on my Main trip, I had the opportunity to visit Kittery, located right over the New Hampshire and Massachusetts border. Apart from numerous outlet stores, you’ll also have the option of eating at their delicious restaurants, such as Robert’s Maine Grill and Bob’s Clam Shack.

As temperatures increase, many travelers make the journey to their favorite East Coast beach towns to soak up the restorative, nostalgic nature that comes with salt water, sand, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

“East Coast beach towns have a certain distinct charm that you have to experience yourself to fully embrace,” says Katie Cosgrove, the director of sales and marketing at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland. “These towns tend to be more laid back, with an appeal for every type of traveler — whether it's families, beach week groups looking for nightlife, couples looking for a getaway, and everyone in between.” Plus, she adds, most of these destinations are relatively close to larger cities — like Savannah, Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City — which “makes for a quick and easy getaway for urban dwellers.”

With summer right around the corner, we had a few local experts, including Cosgrove, share their picks for the best beach towns on the East Coast. See which ones made the cut below. 

Kennebunkport, Maine

According to Natalie Kurtzman , a travel advisor at Fora , you’ll want to head to Maine for “wide sandy beaches, amazing food (homemade blueberry pie and fresh lobster are a New England rite of passage), and charming towns.” While there are several beach towns to choose from, Kennebunkport is her top pick. She recommends starting your vacation by checking into Hidden Pond , where you can stay in cottages and bungalows, and then spending a day at Goose Rocks Beach. “A visit to the area requires a stop at Mabel’s Lobster Claw for — you guessed it — lobster and their award-winning blueberry pie,” she adds.

Newport, Rhode Island

“Newport is filled with amazing history and incredible food,” says Caroline Broome, founder and designer of Tillie , a Palm Beach-based fashion brand. While some beach towns veer toward cute and kitschy, Newport is all about the glamor; if you’ve watched The Gilded Age on HBO, you may remember the mansions, the cocktail parties, and all of the social drama between Manhattan’s elite as they enjoyed summers in Newport. Modern-day Newport still holds onto that level of glitz, with several luxury hotels welcoming travelers to the seaside destination. Broome recommends staying at the historic Castle Hill Inn , but there’s also The Chanler at Cliff Walk , The Brenton Hotel , and The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . During your stay, be sure to check off all of the classic Newport activities: Go sailing, explore the 3.5-mile scenic Cliff Walk , and visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Montauk, New York

As New Yorkers know, the train ride out to the very end of Long Island can be stressful (particularly if you’re joining the throngs of people leaving Manhattan on a Friday). Montauk, however, is worth the four-hour ride and ensuing hassle — and there are even pockets of quiet , if you know where to look. It’s a bit more rugged than some of the other towns in the Hamptons, and I find that to be a significant part of its appeal. There’s a rustic-meets-luxury charm to the town, which you’ll experience at Crow's Nest , a bohemian hotel with both rooms and cottages. Or, if you want to take it up a notch, spend a long weekend at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , where 158 rooms and suites overlook the ocean. If it’s your first time out East, I also recommend visiting the Montauk Point Lighthouse, indulging in a lobster roll at Duryea's , and getting some dinner essentials at Gosman’s Fish Market .

Chatham, Massachusetts

“Chatham feels so nostalgic, with the evening bandstand concerts and the charm of Old Cape Cod,” says Kurtzman. “I spent time in Chatham as a child and have some of the fondest memories at Oyster Pond Beach and strolling Main Street.” If you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, you may want to opt for a quintessential Cape Cod beach cottage for your stay. But for those hoping for a more romantic or luxurious stay, she recommends Chatham Bars Inn : “The inn has one of the best spas in New England if you’re looking to sneak away for some quiet time. Plus, you can walk into town, which is such a highlight.” Between beach trips, bike rides, and popping into the t-shirt stores, galleries, and boutiques on Main Street, check out two of Kurtzman’s can’t-miss Chatham staples: local watering hole The Chatham Squire and Chatham Candy Manor .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket has its own brand of island magic — one created by foggy weather, blooming hydrangeas, cobblestone streets, lobster rolls, and stunning oceanside homes. “There is so much to love [on the island], but a few of my favorites include dining at Cru , Lola 41 , and The Nautilus . For a special meal with gorgeous sunset views, go to Galley Beach . A visit to Cisco Brewers is a must — and this is well paired with grabbing picnic items for the beach at Bartlett’s Farm ,” says Kurtzman. The beach scene is also notable (her favorites are Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach), and there are several top-tier hotels to book for an extra-luxe getaway.  “To stay, I love the White Elephant for its location, great accommodations (especially great for families), and amazing service. I also love The Nantucket Hotel for the location and amazing kids programs,” she says.

Ocean City, Maryland

“Ocean City, Maryland is by far my favorite East Coast beach town. I grew up going to Ocean City with my family, and I couldn't be happier to now call this beach retreat home,” says Cosgrove. “I love that you can get a little bit of everything… easy beach access, family activities, great seafood, and vibrant nightlife.” Some beach towns may be sleepy, but Ocean City is the opposite; there are amusement parks ( Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger Amusement Park ), mini golf courses, playgrounds, piers, and plenty of dining options to keep you full and energized. “Aside from our new signature restaurant [at Ashore Resort & Beach Club], Tide Room , I'd recommend visitors also check out The Hobbit and Liquid Assets , which has a great wine selection. Plus the downtown boardwalk and Thrasher's famous french fries are not to be missed,” she says.

Duck, North Carolina

For families who “love a mix of adventure and relaxation,” Cosgrove recommends Duck, a beach town in the Outer Banks. With one of the best beaches in North Carolina , this is the type of town where you can really kick back and take it easy. If you prefer to spend your vacation days on the move, take a spin around the beach town on a bike (you can rent one from Duck Cycle ), head out on the water with Nor’ Banks Sailing & Watersports , or get your steps in while exploring the Duck Town Park and Boardwalk . And if you end up craving something sweet? Duck delivers. “One of my absolute favorite places to go is Duck Donuts ,” says Cosgrove, “They make incredible hot donuts made to order.”

Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

Broome calls Sullivan’s Island “one of the most lovable, laid-back beach towns in the South,” and it’s not hard to see why. Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, the 2.5-mile-long island is a local favorite, thanks to its proximity, easy beach access, and number of incredible restaurants — including The Obstinate Daughter , Sullivan’s Fish Camp , and Poe’s Tavern . “The homes here are swoon-worthy, and the beach is extra wide, making for incredible views and endless beach walks,” she adds. Pro tip: Rent a bike from Sealand Adventure Sports to explore both Sullivan’s Island and neighboring Isle of Palms. 

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If you’ve traveled to Hilton Head Island even just once, you know it’s the kind of destination that feels like home the moment you arrive; it’s just that special. “Travelers will love Hilton Head's great long stretches of beaches and historic touches — it's also a really great beach town for those who love walking and biking,” says Cosgrove. An easy weekend trip from Savannah , this part of the Lowcountry boasts more than 12 miles of sandy beaches, 30 golf courses, and endless ways to spend a long, leisurely day. Watch the boats arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina , learn about the island’s history from a Gullah Heritage Trail Tours guide, search out dolphins with Dolphin Discoveries Nature Tours , or pick up fresh seafood at Hilton Head Farmers Market .

St. Simons Island, Georgia

Broome, who got married on nearby Sea Island , names St. Simons Island one of the best East Coast beach towns — a title given due to its perennial appeal. “[I] love that this destination is a wonderful place to visit year-round. There is always something festive going on with activities for the whole family,” she says. In the summer, East Beach beckons; in the off-season, visitors can still enjoy the scenery on a bike ride along the St. Simons Island Trail System, pop by the St. Simons Light House Museum , or fill up on the famous pancakes at Palmer’s Village Cafe . During the holidays, a visit to The Cloister is paramount (although you’ll need to be a guest — or have a dining reservation — to get on Sea Island).

Tybee Island, Georgia

When the summer heat descends upon Savannah, locals flock to Tybee Island, where the wide beaches offer a reprieve from the humidity. It’s an extremely family-friendly destination that offers something for everyone. For the history buffs, there’s Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; the adventure seekers can paddle out on the open water with Sea Kayak Georgia ; and nature lovers will appreciate the unparalleled access to wildlife with Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures . Come mealtime, there’s no need to get dressed up. In true beach town form, Tybee Island is extremely casual — whether you’re dining at Breakfast Club (my personal favorite), The Crab Shack , or Salt Island Fish and Beer .

Palm Beach, Florida

East Coast beach towns come in all shapes and sizes, and Palm Beach, Florida is certainly one of the most glittery — and photogenic.  “Filled with endless style and abundant sunshine, Palm Beach is an oasis that feels a bit like stepping into a postcard,” says Broome. “With breezy palm trees, blooming flowers, and beautiful colors around every corner, the inspiration is endless.” The 18-mile-long barrier island is known for its high-end shopping along Worth Avenue, historic landmarks (the Flagler Museum ), and an impressive roster of hotels ; both The Breakers and The Brazilian Court Hotel are centrally located in town. Following a pool day or a ride on a beach cruiser, stop by Buccan Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch, followed by drinks at HMF or Florie’s at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach .

Are you looking for the cutest small towns on the east coast? This guide has some of the best east coast towns in the USA.  The challenge we had writing this was which ones to leave out, there are so many.

What we love most about the United States are all the small sometimes undiscovered small towns there are to visit. While a trip to a well-known city like New York or Boston. is well worth a visit. The smaller east coast cities and towns in-between have a lot to offer.  These small towns are perfect when you want something a bit different and a little more off the beaten track.

Some of these places to visit on the east coast offer you great views, some great history, and others are shrouded in mystery. All have a different flavor and feel. We know there will be something for even the most discerning traveler here.

We encourage you while in these towns on the east coast that you support local businesses. Shop local, eat local, go on local tours, and enjoy the history of these towns while being respectful to the residents. 

No matter which of these east coast USA towns you choose to visit we are sure you will have a great time. We can’t wait to hear about it.

St Augustine, Florida

St Augustine is definitely one of the towns on the east coast that you need to visit. Not only is it picture postcard perfect but it also has a famous lighthouse with a somewhat torrid past.

This place has history and then some. Established by Spanish conquistadors in 1565 St Augustine and is one of the oldest cities in America sometimes called the Ancient City. The buildings range from the oldest wooden schoolhouse and jail from 1890 to colonial properties with a Spanish influence that is truly unique.

Make sure you visit Castillo de San Marcos, Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, and the  Lightner Museum that is housed in a gorgeous old grand hotel.

If you want more of a relaxing time then head to the beautiful beach. The white sands stretch for two miles and the water is crystal clear.

And for those, a bit more daring St Augustine lighthouse was featured on both Ghost Adventures and Buzz Feed unsolved. It is said to be one of the most haunted lighthouses in the USA. They do evening ghost tours if you are that way inclined.

Helen, Georgia

Known for its Bavarian-style buildings there really is no other place like Helen. It’s as if someone built a Bavarian village in the middle of Georgie.

Visiting Helen is like going to a European town without leaving the States. And for that reason, Helen is very very popular especially around Christmas time when it goes all out.

The fact it’s nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountain range somehow adds to the Bavarian vibes. There is also a lot to do other than just admiring the local architecture.

Make sure you visit the Alpine railway museum at Charlemagne’s Kingdom and the sweet treat-filled Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen.

And if the town gets too much for you there is nearby fishing., hiking, tubing, you name it. Make sure you visit the Anna Ruby and Rave Cliff Falls.

Montpelier, Vermont

Montpelier is one of those east coast cities that seems more like a town than a city. With a population of fewer than 8,000 people, the capital city of Vermont is less than bustling. In fact, it’s the smallest state capital in the States.

Other than the fall foliage the main reason to visit Montpelier is food. The  Ben & Jerry’s factory is here for the ice cream lovers. And let’s not forget maple syrup and the cider mill, yes one could get a real sugar rush in Montpelier.

The other draw here is the nature there is a towering mountain known as the Camel’s Hump, a granite quarry known as the Rock of Ages, and the amazing colours known as fall .

When you imagine fall in New England you probably imagine a place like Montpelier. Lovely colored wooden new England houses surrounded by foliage bursting with color and of course the church spire to add that certain something.

Montpelier really is one of the cutest east coast cities to spend some time at.

Savannah, Georgia

Rich in history, art, trendy boutiques, and haunted sites, Savannah is known for manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages, and incredible architecture.

This is one of the places to visit on the east coast if you like strolling around cobblestoned squares, veiled in Spanish moss taking in the history and sights.

Settled in 1733 it one of the oldest cities in the country and was one of the first planned grid square cities. The coastal landscape is beautiful and the locals are friendly. In fact, Savannah is known as the Hostess City and consistently named one of the “world’s friendliest cities” by Condé Nast Traveler.  

Savannah is also known for its connections with literature and film namely namely “Forrest Gump” and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, and of course “The Walking Dead”.

Ithaca, New York

Ithaca is a small picturesque town in the upstate New York Finger Lakes region. If you have never been to this area it truly is beautiful. One of the east coast cities that often gets overlooked but is well worth a visit.

On the shores of  Lake Cayuga, the area has waterfalls and gorges galore. Downtown Ithaca is charming with lots to do and is home to many of the city’s colorful festivals.

Itaca is also apparently the home to the ice cream sundae with one of the local churches still celebrates “Sundae Sundays”.

This town has somewhat gone through a change and now has a very artsy bohemian vibe. Itaca is a very progressive place. There is so much to see and do not only in the town but in the surrounding countryside.

Things to visit include Cornell Botanic Gardens which includes an arboretum and multi-tiered Cascadilla Falls. Other waterfalls in the area include Ithaca Falls, near downtown. Southwest, Buttermilk Falls, and Robert H. Treman state parks.

Annapolis, Maryland

The capital of Maryland is not only famous for U nited States Naval Academy but also its beautiful 8th-century brick houses and the domed 1700s Maryland State House.

The downtown area is home to many historic inns and scenic streets. The Romanesque-style St. Anne’s Episcopal Church is well worth a visit with its Tiffany glass windows and historic cemetery.

Annapolis has played a vital role in the past, present, and future of the USA and has all the history to prove it.

Roanoke, Virginia

If you are a fan of American Horror Story Roanoke is possibly the last place you want to visit. Don’t worry this is not that Roanoke and is a lovely place to visit. At the southern tip of the Shenandoah Valley, this area is outstandingly beautiful.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia Roanoke is also know for The Roanoke Star, or Mill Mountain Star. Sometimes referred to as the Hollywood sign of the East Coast, it is the world’s largest freestanding illuminated man-made star.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

In New Hampshire, Portsmouth as its name suggests is a port and lies on the Piscataqua River. People settled in this town in the early 1600s, and Portsmouth citizens provided the gunpowder and stores that fueled the American Revolution.

Portsmouth was once the nation’s busiest ports and shipbuilding cities and while it doesn’t have that claim to fame now it still sees port sees five million tons of cargo on import/export ships

While the 1855 North Church presides over Market Square to remind you of its history the modern Paortmouth preserves its authentic routes while being a vibrant city.

It’s an easy city to walk and that is what we advise you do. Make sure you visit Strawbery Banke Museum, John Paul Jones House, USS Albacore, a retired submarine that’s been turned into a museum. Take a harbor cruise or just browse the many galleries, bookstores, antique shops, and craft boutiques. And a wonder through Prescott Park will really brighten up your day.

New Haven, Connecticut

Home to the Ivy League Yale University New Haven is a coastal town in Connecticut.

Yale founded in 1701 is the centerpiece of the town which is Connecticut’s second-largest city.  The Campus which is accessible houses the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Yale Center for British Art. The faux-Gothic and Victorian architecture on campus really is a sight to see.

One of the east coast cities known as a thriving home for the arts, architecture, and the human mind, and when you move off the campus you will find an array of cars, shops, restaurants, longer, and a lively atmosphere.

Easton, Maryland

Named as one of the best small towns in America you will find quiet streets lined with Colonial and Victorian buildings and lots of charm. First settled in the 17th century Easton has been a thriving community ever since. 

It’s also an arty quirky place with art by local painters displayed on lampposts and an annual Waterfowl Festival. This town really has a community feeling backed up with numerous award-winning restaurants, art galleries, and fine boutiques.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Twelves miles off the Rhode Island coast lies Block Island. Block Island has stunning views, 17 miles of beautiful beaches , hiking trails, a lively night scene, and a lot of history. 

The island is 3 by 7 miles and shaped like a pork chop. Bike riding, hiking, horseback riding, bird-watching, snorkeling, fishing, parasailing, kayaking, and sailing are all activities that Block Island is known for.

Settled in 1661 you can learn about the local history at the Block Island Historical Society museum, shop, and gallery. Make sure you visit two of the island’s lovingly restored structures, Peleg Champlin House and the Hygeia House. Also the 1800s red-brick Southeast Lighthouse and the 1867 North Lighthouse are worth a visit.

Block Island is also known for its Migratory songbirds and has a National Wildlife Refuge which is well, worth a visit. One of the towns on the east coast that has something to offer everyone.

Newport, Rhode Island

If you are visiting Block Island then why not combine it with a trip to Newport as one of the ferries to the island leaves from here.

A city set on Aquidneck Island in the New England state of Rhode Island. It’s a beautiful seaside city famous for its mansions, shopping, and scenery. One of the oldest resorts in America is home to 3 National Historic Landmark Districts.

Newport is always known as the Sailing Capital of the World and a trip to the harbor to see the yachts is well worth it.

Bar Harbor, Maine 

Close to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor is one of those towns on the east coast that deserves a closer look. It is on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. Many see it as a gateway to the mountains of the national park but it has far more to offer.

The authentic and friendly atmosphere makes you feel at home and the slow pace and stunning coastal scenery are a welcome retreat.

Make sure while here that you catch the sunrise from the shore path at Agamond Park, it’s stunning. And take a boat or a whale watching tour, the area around here is beautiful, and the best way to see it is from the sea.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

At the northern tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts this seaside town was the site of the Mayflower’s landing in 1620. The population is just under 3000 growing to over 60,000 in summer so this is one of the popular towns on the east coast.

Provincetown is also on the US National Seashore and is America’s favorite beach town. It’s always being alternative attracting fringe writers and artists in the past and today is known as a great LGBT destination.

There are beautiful vast beaches, a rugged coastline, charming guesthouses, and lots of unique shops and restaurants to explore.  It’s rich creative history seep into every bone of this place.

Kennebunkport, Maine

Historically a shipbuilding and fishing village Kennebunkport is one of the most popular summer getaway towns on the east coast.

I’ve been to a few of these towns – like Portsmouth, Princeton and Montpelier. All great cities. I would add Rockport, Mass to the list. It’s a small coastal town with small shops, great seafood and wonderful views of the ocean.

Once this crazy Covid settles down my husband and I plan on visiting all these places. We moved from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island with the sole purpose of travelling up and down the east coast and across Canada. This gives us a good list of places to put on our “to see” list. I prefer the small quaint places to the big cities though my husband wants to be anywhere there is a sports team. We can do both on the east coast. Thank you for the outline of each place. I am saving your post for our travels whenever it is really safe to get going again.

Top East Coast Historical Sites, Attractions, and Landmarks

Acadia national park.

You may think that Maine’s  Acadia National Park  is nothing more than beautiful granite mountaintops and a dazzling coastline sprinkled with lush forests and ponds, but you’d be mistaken. The park boasts incredible history in addition to its stunning scenery.

Before Acadia became the first national park east of the Mississippi River, Mount Desert Island was known for its ritz and glamor. After seeing paintings of the scenery, wealthy New England families built vacation homes here and would spend their holidays and weekends on the island shores. Families included the well-known Carnegies, Astors, Morgans, Fords, Vanderbilts, and Rockefellers. Unfortunately, a great fire in 1947 consumed most of the extravagant estates.

Other than the impressive houses you will still find on the island, my favorite historical element of the park is the carriage roads.  There are approximately 45 miles of these rustic, unpaved roads throughout the park. The roads were gifted to the park by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. who desired to travel Mount Desert Island on motor-free roadways. They’re popular for cycling and hiking today. My favorite aspect of the road system is the marvelous stone bridge.

For hikers who consider themselves historians, Acadia is one of the best places to visit. By 1915, there were already 200 miles of trails established on Mount Desert Island. If you walk on any of Acadia National Park’s trails, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of American Indians, early European settlers, and the wealthy elite in addition to outdoor enthusiasts like yourself

In addition to the historic elements of the park, there are plenty of  things to do in Acadia . The park is popular for hiking and camping as well as auto touring and biking in addition to boat tours that focus on history and wildlife. To visit, bring your national park pass or $30 to admit your party for the week. 

While most come to Acadia for the scenic views, those coastlines are layered with stories of perseverance and preservation. Every grain of sand provides insight into the lives that came before and transformed Acadia National Park into what it is today.

Boone Hall Plantation

When visiting Charleston in South Carolina make sure you venture out of town a few miles. Just outside the city in a peaceful parkland in Mt. Pleasant, you can visit one of the oldest American plantations that still grow crops to this very day. Boone Hall Plantation is significant in American history because the plantation was lucrative and the descendants of the first owner were influential in the politics of the colonies as well as the whole country for many decades.

Boon Hall Plantation is open all year and offers tours of the property as well as the grand mansion. They also offer seasonal activities so check their website for details and dates. The cost for a single ticket is around $26 and $12 for children. Take your AAA card for discounts.

As you drive towards the grand mansion, slow down to a minimum speed to fully enjoy the ride under the majestic canopy of live oaks. It took them over two centuries to grow and connect their tops into a tunnel.

The current Boon Hall Plantation owner still lives on the top floor of the mansion, which means you’ll enjoy the guided tour of the ground level only. Besides the grand house, there is more to see. Check out the slave quarters, boathouse, crop garden, and flower garden. Don’t forget to take a selfie under the live oak trees – you’ll never forget that view.

First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA

Founded in 1773, First African Baptist Church stands proudly in the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia, only a few steps away from the popular City Market.

The church has a long and fascinating history as both a congregation and a cultural touchstone and is one of the oldest Black congregations in the United States.

First African Baptist Church was founded and built–literally and figuratively–primarily by enslaved people, and the building itself was finished in 1859, just two years before the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Since then, the church has survived not only the Civil War, but the Reconstruction Era and the Civil Rights Movement, just to name a few.

During the 19th century, the church served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, carefully concealing people escaping slavery beneath its floorboards–today, you can still see the holes drilled into the floor that allowed those on the run to breathe while remaining concealed.

Tours of First African Baptist Church are given three times a day on Tuesday-Saturday (11am, 2pm, and 4pm), and once at 1pm on Sundays. Tours cost $10 USD.

It’s not possible to visit the interior of the church without a tour, but it’s well worth including First African Baptist Church in your Savannah itinerary , as it is a fascinating historic landmark and home to an important piece of the city’s history.

Walter Gropius House

Significance

The home of German architect Walter Gropius and his family was built in 1938 in Massachusetts. Gropius was a revolutionary architect who founded the Bauhaus school in Germany. When he came over to the US to teach at Harvard, he designed his home himself. Gropius had a big impact on modern architecture. 

What you can expect

Today, you can tour the fully furnished house. You can see the terrace he designed so his daughter could sleep under the stars and the dining room table lit by a single spot light from above so as to encourage people leaning in for lively conversation and so much more. 

Even the library is still filled with Gropius’ books. They also host events, such as recitals and theme parties. For upcoming events see the Gropius House website . 

Planning your visit 

At the time of writing, admission for adults is $25. The Gropius House is located at 68 Baker Bridge Road, Lincoln, Mass. 01773 which is roughly a half hour drive from Boston. As of 2019 there is an app you can use to learn more about Gropius and his house, available from the website. 

I visited the house in the fall, when the foliage in New England is beautifully colored. It’s a very scenic drive out from Boston through the forests, so I can highly recommend visiting during that time of year. Walter Gropius paid a lot of attention to the connection between the house and its environment, so best to go in a season when you can take full advantage of that.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Of all of the historical vacation destinations on this list, the Outer Banks is our personal favorite! The Outer Banks in North Carolina is home to many adorable (and historic!) lighthouses, but one of the most interesting and beautiful is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which is located in the town of Buxton. It is in the middle of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and reachable as an easy trip from almost any Outer Banks town. The lighthouse protects an especially dangerous portion of the coastal waters where the Virginia Drift meets the Gulf Stream. Because of the dangerous waters, this is also an interesting place to scuba dive as there are many shipwrecks from the Colonial era through World War II. The lighthouse was commissioned in 1794 and completed in 1802. The current tower was built in 1868 after the original was damaged during the Civil War.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse no longer is in use and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service operates the Hatteras Island Visitor Center and Museum of the Sea in the old lighthouse keeper’s quarters. You can also climb to the top and enjoy fabulous sea vies. The lighthouse is located at 46379 Lighthouse Road in Buxton. Tickets for entry to climb to the top are $8 for adults and $4 for children and seniors.

The Freedom Trail

Boston, Massachusetts is one of the best cities to visit that contains so many historical sites. The Freedom Trail is one of Boston’s main historical sites. This 2.5-mile long path connects 16 historical sites across Boston. These 16 sites had a great impact on the American Revolution and the founding of the United States. There is no cost to walk the Freedom Trail and many of the sites are also free or inexpensive to get into. One of the paid sites, the Paul Revere House, charges a $5 admission fee. To get around to the stops, visitors just need to follow the brick path that easily links the sites.

I recommend starting the trail at the Bunker Hill Monument. This ensures you can climb the tower when it is less busy and you are less tired when you climb the 294 steps to the top. Make sure not to miss the museum that covers the history of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Although the Americans lost this battle, the British suffered devastating losses, thus impacting them in the war. Other must-see sites along the Freedom Trail include the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship in the United States, and the site of the Boston Massacre. At the end of the Freedom Trail is the present-day state capitol building and the Boston Common, the oldest park in the United States. These sites along the Freedom Trail represent the foundations of America and portrays to visitors the process it took to become the country the United States is today.

Castillo de Dan Marcos

Castillo de San Marcos is right on Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida , the oldest city in the US.  It is $15 per person since it’s a walk-in park, but if you have a national park pass, that will get you in, too.  There is parking at the fort, it can be used to explore the town which is very convenient, and it is $2.50 per hour.  During your visit, you can do a self-guided tour of the fortress with a map and brochure, watch a demonstration by re-enactors, or do a ranger program if there is one going on.  I would plan for 1-2 hours here, depending on what is going on during your visit.

So, what’s up with the fort?  Well, it’s the oldest masonry fort in the US with construction beginning in 1672.  107 years after the city was founded, and while Florida was still under Spanish rule.  It is made up of Coquina stones and passed through many hands and was besieged twice.  However, in 1924 it was named a National Monument and after 251 years of continuous military possession, it was deactivated in 1933 and turned over to the National Park Service.  Even if you’re not a huge history buff, this is a great place to visit and offers wonderful views of the bay and the city.

Gettysburg National Battlefield

Gettysburg is a small town located in Pennsylvania that was a key player in the American Civil War. The town dates back to 1761 when Samuel Gettys laid ground to a small tavern in the area for soldiers and merchants to rest. Gettysburg gets its true place in history as the location for one of the American Civil War’s largest battles that is known as the turning point in the war. The battle was fought July 1st to the 3rd in 1863 and saw the largest loss of life in one battle for the entire war. The battle was a win for the union and inspired the “Gettysburg Address” by President Lincoln

Gettysburg has much to offer in the form of American history. You won’t want to miss the Gettysburg National Military Park, the site of the battle. The area is largely an open field, but it has so many stories to tell. Throughout the park, you will see a number of different statues and monuments commemorating the lives lost during the battle. Tops sights to see within the Military Park include Seminary Ridge, Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, and Cemetery Ridge.

Aside from the Military Park, Gettysburg has much to offer. Visit the Jennie Wade home, the home of the only civilian killed in the battle, visit one of the many museums such as the Gettysburg Museum of History, take a ghost tour of the battlefield,  or stroll main street for quaint, cute shops and great food. Be sure to try some Philly Cheesesteak while there! Gettysburg is a fairly inexpensive destination as many of the top sights have no entrance fee. The National Military Park is free to enter as well as many of the top historical sites within the town. Many of the museums do have entrance fees, but are inexpensive. If you want to bring home some unique souvenirs the costs may add up, but a trip to Gettysburg can be done on any budget.

Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter, located on a small island in Charleston, South Carolina, was the site where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Commonly known as the location where the Civil Wat began, a visit to Fort Sumter is perfect for those who love history. 

To get to Fort Sumter, you will need to take a short (ten minute) ferry ride. Fort Sumter Tours is the only form of transportation available to the island. You can take them from Patriot’s Point (in Mount Pleasant), or Liberty Square (where the Visitor’s Center is located). While it is free to visit the National Monument, the ferry does cost $24 per adult and $16 for kids.

Once you are at the fort, there is plenty to see and explore. The fort itself is in good shape and there are many artifacts from the time (including cannons and artillery). The park rangers are there to answer any questions and sometimes offer tours. When our family visited Charleston, the rangers were very helpful and explained what happened on April 12, 1861, and Lincoln’s role during the battle. The kids participated in the  Junior Ranger program  and the whole family was involved in helping them complete the activities. It was a great learning experience for the entire family and a unique thing to do during our East Coast trip.

Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is a must-see historic site along Virginia’s Potomac River, and is famous for being home to American’s first president.  George Washington lived here starting in 1754, and was later joined by his wife, Martha, and her two children.  During Washington’s residence at Mount Vernon, he served in the French and Indian War, helped America win its independence from Great Britain, and eventually was sworn in as President of the United States.

A visit to Mount Vernon provides an intimate look into the lives of the Washington family, while also showing how people lived in 18 th  century America.  While the property consisted of 3,000 acres of land and a 3,500 square foot home when Washington first moved in, throughout his residence, he helped expand it to 7,600 acres with an 11,000 square foot mansion.  A lot of this labor was done by enslaved workers living at Mount Vernon, of which there were 317 by the time of Washington’s death in 1799.

There is much to do during a visit to Mount Vernon. You can tour the Washington home, visit the Washington family tomb, explore the grounds, and learn about the slaves who lived and worked there.  If you have extra time, watch the 4D film featured in the Revolutionary War Theatre, tour the museum to see the Washingtons’ personal belongings, such as George’s dentures, or dine at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. 

Entry to Mount Vernon costs $20 for adults, $12 for kids age 6 to 11, and free for children younger than that. It is smart to buy tickets in advance, since you will be assigned a time slot to tour the house.  The earlier you book your tour the better, especially on a weekend, as crowds will swell by the afternoon.

Valley Forge

It isn’t much of an exaggeration to say that if it wasn’t for that winter of 1777 in Valley Forge , the United States may not exist. At the time the Continental Army was reeling from losses, including their capital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was in December of 1777 that General George Washington and 12,000 troops encamped at a then-unknown village just outside of the capital for what would be a six-month stay.

Over that winter, the troops trained and gained new confidence. By June, the Americans were in pursuit of the British and defeated them at a battle in New Jersey. Valley Forge was, indeed, a turning point in the American Revolution.

Today, 3,500 acres are preserved at Valley Forge National Historic Park for visitors to experience just want those soldiers experienced more than two centuries ago. The park is a mix of wooded areas and rolling meadows with trails meandering throughout.

Visitors can get an overview of the history at a museum that is home to artifacts found at the site. Then you can explore the site by car for the self-guided 10-mile Encampment Tour. There are parking lots throughout so that you can get on foot for a closer look at monuments (such as the massive National Memorial Arch) and reproduction log cabins. Occasionally you’ll see reenactors pop up around the park.

But don’t forget to simply enjoy this beautiful suburban park, too. Tourists tend to congregate around the historic sites but there are plenty of wooded trails to enjoy.

Entrance to Valley Forge National Historical Park is free. Trolley or bicycle tours of the site do charge a fee.

Charleston, South Carolina

Best known for its cobblestone streets and palmetto-tree-lined streets, the city of Charleston, South Carolina is a true gem of the Southeast. Here, it’s not uncommon to hear the hooves of a horse-drawn carriage in the morning silence, or smell the scent of freshly, hand-baked buttermilk biscuits. Pastel antebellum homes contrast against clear blue skies, while visitors stroll through a city stuck back in time. Read below to find out why Charleston is consistently ranked as one of the top cities in the world.

Charleston’s Role in US History

Today, Charleston’s famous Battery Park promenade and Waterfront Park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors to its banks each year. However, more than 150 years ago, the area was a key component of South Carolina’s defense strategy during the Civil War. Here, Confederate soldiers placed cannons to protect against possible Union invasions. While they were were never fired, they still stand today to remind travelers of course-altering eras in American history. Across the junction of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, one can see Fort Sumter, the spot where the first shots of the Civil War rung out. 

Where to Eat, Stay, & Play in Charleston

Charleston is no stranger to great southern grub. In fact, there are so many top-ranked restaurants there, that it would be impossible to visit them all even in one week. Two hot-spots that are a must to visit are Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit (get the pimento cheese), and Husk (the menu changes based on what local farmers produce). After a good meal, stroll through downtown to Rainbow Row. Keep going straight and catch Waterfront Park at sunset — look for dolphins splashing around!

Visiting Charleston: Know Before You Go

As one of the oldest southern cities in the United States, there are endless opportunities to learn about the city’s rich cultural history just by walking. Plimoth Plantation

Of all the places to visit on the east coast, Massachusets has the most historical vacation destinations! Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, MA, is one of the most significant historic sites to visit on the East Coast of the United States. About 40 miles south of  Boston , the town of Plymouth is the site of the famous Plymouth Rock, where the pilgrims first arrived from England in 1620 on their ship, the Mayflower.  The nearby Plimoth Plantation is where they set up a village, friending the local Wampanoag residents, and where the first Thanksgiving celebration took place as a celebration of friendship and the bountiful harvest.  That celebration has gone on to be one of the most important holidays in America each November.

A perfect place for kids of all ages, visitors first learn about the site in the visitor center after watching a short film about the site’s history and what they will see.

From there, visitors experience the Wampanoag Homesite and structures that were typical of the Wampanoags, the Native People, whose descendants are still living in the area to this day. In fact, the Wampanoags you will meet in the Homesite are not actors.  They are modern-day Native People of the Wampanoag community dressed in traditional clothing but who will speak from a modern perspective. It is a great way to interact, get an idea of what life was like for the Wampanoags during the 1600s, and ask interactive questions, but it is important to be respectful of their culture. 

You can then venture into the historic 17 th  century English Village, which contains numerous houses you can enter. The village houses host role-playing guides dressed in period clothing acting as an English colonists of the time. The English colonists ARE actors who remain in character, though they do not perform a script. They interact as if they are in the time period and share a variety of fascinating information specific to the questions asked by the visitors. From what they are cooking to the religious beliefs of the group to all about what led to the first Thanksgiving, it is a fascinating way to learn more about such an important event in American history.  My kids absolutely loved our visit, which interestingly enough was a bitterly cold day in November, giving us a first-hand experience of what life was like for the Pilgrims.  

Tickets cost $32 for adults, $19 for kids ages 5-12, and $29 for seniors.

Following your visit to Plimoth Plantation, head over to see the actual Plymouth Rock and tour the Mayflower ship in downtown Plymouth. Tickets for the Mayflower are $15 for adults, $12 for kids ages 5-12, and $13.50 for seniors.

Pilgrim Monument

One of the many  things to do in Provincetown, Massachusetts  is to pay a visit to the Pilgrim Monument. This historic site commemorates the first landing of the  Mayflower  Pilgrims in Provincetown in November 1620. What many people don’t realize is that the Pilgrims landed in Provincetown five weeks before they landed on now-famous Plymouth. Additionally, the  Mayflower Compact , the first written document that referred to how the new colony would be governed, was signed aboard the ship while docked at Provincetown Harbor.

The Pilgrim Monument was built from 1907 to 1910 and can be seen from miles away. It is 252 feet tall and it is the tallest all granite structure in the US. You can climb to the top in about 10 minutes. The views from the top are quite incredible and you can almost see the  Mayflower  off in the distance.

The monument also has the Provincetown Museum at its base. Inside are exhibits that showcase the history of the area, including more information on the Pilgrim landing and Native American artifacts. Admission is $17 for adults and includes access to the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. It is located in downtown Provincetown. It does have its own parking lot, but if you’ve already found a parking spot in town we suggest walking to the monument.

Harper’s Ferry West Virginia

One historical site on the East Coast that is worth a visit is Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia. Located at the junction between the Shenandoah River and the Potomac River, Harpers Ferry is also at the crossroads of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Because of its advantageous location, as well as the railroad that went through it, this site was a hot commodity during the Civil War, changing hands eight times in four years.

Even before the Civil War, Harpers Ferry was historically significant as the site of John Brown’s Raid in 1959. John Brown was an abolitionist who attempted to start a revolt across the South by raiding the arsenal. Colonel Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson were among the troops that ended the raid. For non-Civil War history, Harpers Ferry is a great place to learn about the Niagara Movement, which held its first meeting in America here, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, headquartered here, and even a visit from Thomas Jefferson.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park consists of the lower part of Harpers Ferry, while the Historic District is above it. Both the park and the district are laid out to mix recreations of historic buildings, events, and people with regular small-town businesses and restaurants. This, along with the free guided tours and historical markers throughout, allow for a history-rich atmosphere no matter where you are. Combine this with river views, fewer tourists, and no chain restaurants or hotels in sight, and this is the perfect historical getaway.

If you plan a visit, make sure to stay in a Bed and Breakfast, historical of course, and be aware that parking is limited. Whether you want to learn more about its history or a chance to just get away for a bit,  Harpers Ferry  is well worth a visit.

Jamestown, Virginia, was the site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World, founded in 1607. From that tiny colonial foothold in North America came so much of the good (representative government) and the bad (slavery, conflict with Native Americans) that makes up American history. This is where it all started. 

Historic Jamestowne, unlike the Jamestown Settlement living history museum nearby, is the actual site of the original colony at Jamestown, Virginia. It is part U.S. National Park (Colonial National Historical Park) and part active archaeological site managed by Preservation Virginia. Plan to allow half a day for your visit to Historic Jamestowne. To get the full Jamestown experience, spend the morning at Jamestown Settlement and use the afternoon for your  visit to Historic Jamestowne . 

You can purchase tickets ahead of time online or at the Visitor Center, and make sure you pick up a map. The guest services representative will tell you when the next showing of the orientation film is starting (recommended) and what tours or activities are available. National Parks Service rangers are excellent tour guides. They are great at setting the scene and providing important historical context, especially if you’re at a site that requires a bit of imagination, like Historic Jamestowne, where not much remains of the original town.  

Regardless of whether you do the tour, use the official map to help you with your visit. It will guide you to important stops such as the hundred-year-old Memorial Church, statues of Pocahontas and John Smith, archaeological dig sites, the site of James Fort, the Voorhees Archaerium, and the Ambler Mansion. The Archaerium displays many artifacts unearthed from the digs around Jamestown Island.

Manassas National Battlefield

The Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of two major American Civil War Battles.  The town of Manassas just to the north of the battlefield was of strategic importance during the Civil War as it was where the Manassas Gap and Orange and Alexandria railroads joined, providing for a direct connection from the Shenandoah Valley and the Washing Richmond Railroad.  The Confederate forces won the First Battle of Bull Run and the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1861 and 1862 respectively.  It was during the first battle that General Thomas Jonathan Jackson received the nickname ‘Stonewall”, having been compared to one by a fellow officer.  The first battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War.

The Manassas National Battlefield Park was established in 1940 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.   There is a visitor centre (open from 0830 until 1700) on Sudley Road near the south entrance to the park which includes exhibits Civil War-era uniforms and weapons and a map of the battle areas.  The 45 minute Manassas orientation film is a must-see.  The site has been preserved much as it was in Civil War times.  Entrance to the site and guided tours are free and it is best to experience the site through a guided tour–  details here .

West Quoddy Lighthouse

Though you wouldn’t guess it from its name, the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is the easternmost building in the continental United States.

Perched on a peninsula on the northeastern tip of Maine, West Quoddy Headlight is half an hour’s drive from  Lubec , a charming fishing town on the Canadian border. The little lighthouse (and its predecessors) have guided ships through the Quaddy Narrows strait dividing the US and Canada since 1808. Lighthouses are essential in any coastal town, but this one was particularly important: thick fog engulfs the area for more than half of the summer. The original lighthouse’s foghorn logged more hours than any other lighthouse in the US in 1885!

Even if you’re not a sailor, there’s more than one reason to navigate your way to the lighthouse. Show up early enough, and you’ll be one of the first people in the US to see the sunrise. Even better, you won’t have to deal with the crowds at the US’ most popular sunrise spot, nearby Acadia National Park. Try to show up at least half an hour before sunrise; the blue hour is almost as beautiful as the golden hour after the sun rises. The entrance to the area is free.

Capitol Building in Washington DC

A list of the top historic sites on the East Coast cannot be complete with one of the most important buildings when it comes to political history. The Capitol.

The Capitol is the meeting point of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and a symbol of the American people and their government.  The building was finished in 1800 and has witnessed many historic events ever since. For example, the inauguration of every president, independence day celebrations, or national memorial day concerts.

After Washington D.C. was chosen as the new capital of the US design competition was held for the U.S. Capitol too. Of about 10 entries, the design by William Thornton won. Thornton’s design was inspired by the French Louvre and Pantheon, which explains why the Capitol is a characteristic neoclassic building.

You can learn more about the Capitol, the design, history, and US politics by joining one of the free tours, which you can book in advance if you please or arrange at The Capitol Visitor Center. Besides a tour, you can also explore the visitors center and check out one of the exhibitions, as the Capitol is also a center for American art. Again, visiting these exhibitions and the visitor center are free of charge.

The Capitol Visitor Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with the last tour leaving at 3.20 p.m.

Make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before the time of the tour as you need to go through The Capitol security, which may take some time!

Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture Garden

Especially when the display of that art is so unexpected, refreshing, and new to us. Honestly, we’d never heard of most of the American sculptors whose work is displayed at Brookgreen Gardens near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and we were so glad to make the introductions. Brookgreen Gardens, which is designated a National Historical Landmark, contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculpture in the country, with over 2,000 works by 425 artists. It contains almost exclusively figurative art–that is, human and animal figures from nature, history, and mythology. I’m especially fond of figures from the classical mythology field, and there are plenty of those. Oh, and the gardens and fountains that surround the sculptures are spectacular.

Brookgreen Gardens was founded by railroad heir Archer Milton Huntington and his wife Anna Hyatt Huntington to feature sculptures by Anna and her sister, Harriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor. The sisters made sure the works of other significant American sculptors were also included in the collection. Brookgreen Gardens was opened in 1932, and is built on four former rice plantations.

The famed Huntington Museum, Library, and Gardens in Los Angeles were founded by the same family. Allow at least several hours to walk the gardens and see the sculpture. If you do it justice, it may even take more than a day. If you have children, or if you’re a child at heart, don’t miss the special exhibits of charming animals and figures designed especially to amuse the young ones.

Adult admission is $18; seniors are $16; children 4-12 are $10; younger children are free. When you arrive, you can exchange tickets purchased online for seven-day passes so you can come back if you miss anything.

Ellis Island, New York

Ellis Island is one of the most popular historic sites to visit when visiting New York City . Just a short ferry ride away from New York City and Liberty Island is Ellis Island, known as the gateway through which many new immigrants from Europe entered the United States. 

The island’s immigration station was in operation and processed immigrants from 1892 to 1954. During this time period, over 12 million immigrants arrived on the island, detained, and questioned before proceeding to their final destination in the United States. It has been said that over half of the American population have at least one person in their family history that has passed through Ellis Island. 

Ellis Island is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and you can visit both Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty during the same trip. If you’re leaving from Battery Park in New York City, your ferry ticket to Ellis Island covers both with Liberty Island being your first top and Ellis Island the second. Ferry tickets are offered through Liberty Cruises and include admission to Ellis Island as well as the Statue of Liberty. They range between $19 and $22.25 for adults and $9 and $12 for children depending upon which Statue of Liberty admission ticket you chose. 

There is so much to see and learn at Ellis Island, it is definitely worth the trip to see!

Best Summer Weekend Getaways on the East Coast

The many exhibits in the Women’s Rights National Historical Park paint the picture of women’s place in US history. The park is a tribute to the suffragists who fought to secure women’s voting rights in the United States. It’s located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in Seneca Falls, New York. The park is a perfect stop off the New York Thruway when headed to Niagara Falls.  

A gathering of animated life-size bronze statues is the first thing you see when you enter the Visitors Center. The statues depict people prominent in the women’s rights and abolition movements.  More exhibits upstairs on the political life of women can fascinate for hours.

The informative ranger-led tour is worth taking. It takes you past the stunning stone water wall inscribed with the Declaration of Sentiments, a women’s rights take on the Declaration of Independence.  Next you will visit the Wesleyan Methodist Church.  You will learn about the first Women’s Rights Convention held here in 1848. The convention was the first step in a long journey ending in 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. 

The home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who many consider the main sparkplug for the first convention for women’s rights, is another site to visit. There is also an interesting self-guided walking tour of the historic village of Seneca Falls.

The Women’s Rights Park is a fee-free national park with free entrance and tours.  It’s a wonderful place to bring the whole family. The achievements of women striving to gain equality for all promise to inspire everyone.

Statue of Liberty, New York

Of all of the East Coast landmarks and attractions, the Statue of Liberty is among the most famous and recognizable symbols of the United States. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, the Statue is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The Statue depicts Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, breaking out of her chains and striding forward. Interestingly, the statue was actually a gift to the United States from the government of France, where it was designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and constructed by Gustav Eiffel (who would later build the Eiffel Tower). The statue opened in 1886 and now stands as an icon of freedom. New migrants arriving by boat to the United States would pass directly under the statue, and it came to represent the hopes and dreams of a new generation of Americans.

To visit the Statue of Liberty, you’ll need to buy tickets from the National Parks Service which administers the area. From the NPS you’ve got three options: a ferry ticket which provides access to Liberty Island (currently $19.25 for adults, cheaper for children and seniors), a Pedestal ticket which provides access to the statue’s stone pedestal, or a Crown ticket to access the viewing platform inside Lady Liberty’s crown (extra $3). Note that Pedestal and Crown tickets require advance reservations, particularly for Crown tickets. It’s strongly recommended to reserve tickets in advance from the National Parks Service, as many dishonest and aggressive third-party sellers hang around the ferry departure point at Battery Park. 

If you’re on a super tight budget and don’t mind just having a close-up view of the statue, there’s also a free option: the Staten Island Ferry which departs every 30 minutes from Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Manhattan. The ferry runs directly past Liberty Island and provides an excellent vantage point.

Art Deco Historic District of Miami

The Art Deco Historic District in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood combines vibrant buildings with an equally vibrant atmosphere. The mixture of quirky, colorful buildings built in a combination of iconic Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and MiMo (Miami Modern) styles is an architectural feast for the eyes – and a must on any  Miami bucket list .

With over 900 buildings, the District boasts the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture in the country. Built between 1923 and 1943, the unique building styles feature ornate statues, geometric fountains, porthole windows, chrome accents, and exotic flora motifs dotting their whimsical pastel walls. In 1979, the District became the first 20th-century neighborhood to be recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.

You can see the colorful District and all of its splendor by walking along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue between 5th and 23rd streets. To explore the Art Deco Historic District, you can either take a guided walking tour or discover the area on your own. If you choose the latter option, I recommend passing by the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center on Ocean Drive for more insight on the architectural styles and cultural heritage of the neighborhood.

Be sure not to miss famous buildings such as party central the Clevelander Hotel, the Spanish-style mansion Villa Casaurina – the former home of fashion designer Gianni Versace – and the oceanliner-inspired curves of Señor Frog’s.

If you decide on a walking tour, the Miami Design Preservation League offers a variety of tours depending on your preference. You can choose from the official Art Deco walking tour, a self-guided audio tour, or private group tours.

If you’re looking for something unique in Florida, add the Miami Art Deco Historic District onto your bucket list. With tons of things to see and do, you won’t only learn about Art Deco architecture; you’ll also be inspired by the neighborhood’s buzzing atmosphere.

Kennedy Space Center

Not viewed as a historical site by most people, Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral is absolutely packed with awesome history. For those interested in the history of America’s space exploration, there isn’t a better location to visit in the whole country. Even better, you can still catch rockets blasting off from the launch pads!

You’ll easily be able to see all that Kennedy Space Center offers over the course of a single day. Get there early to avoid some of the crowds and potentially hot or rainy afternoon weather. I’d advise catching the earliest bus tour of the launch sites. This also takes you out to the Apollo/Saturn V museum which is absolutely massive. The sheer size of the Saturn V rocket stored here will leave you speechless and in awe. The Saturn V is the marvelous machine that propelled our brave explorers to the surface of the Moon. The bus tour itself is super informative as well, so enjoy the ride!

Once you’re finished being stunned by the Saturn V, you’ll get the opportunity to explore the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The shuttle program was an amazing feat of American engineering and served to solidify NASA as the premier space agency. Atlantis is a marvel and the fact that you can get so close to something that spent hundreds of days in space is amazing. You’ll also want to pay your respects at the memorial dedicated to the astronauts who lost their lives in the Challenger and Columbia disasters which is located here.

I’ve barely scratched the surface of what you need to see at Kennedy Space Center. Admission prices are $57 for adults and $47 for children. You can also add on the extended bus tour for just $25 which is a great value if you want to extend your day. Kennedy Space Center is a great combination for anyone who loves science and history!

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island in south Georgia was once the most home to “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world”. From 1886 to 1942, the Jekyll Island Club operated during the winter month, aka Club Season. The club roster consisted of the most wealthy families in America, like the Rockefellers,  Vanderbilts, and Morgans. All winter long, the families would gather in rolling parties, creating powerful alliances, strategic marriages, and countless backroom deals. Two of the most historical events at the Jekyll Island Club were the first transcontinental phone call (along with San Francisco and New York) and the secret meetings to form the Federal Reserve.

During WWII, the club fell into disrepair and ultimately disbanded. In 1947, Governor Melvin E. Thompson gained control of the island for the good of the people of Georgia. The artifacts and furniture from the wealthy homes disappeared, and between mismanagement and human rights complaints about the use of convict labor, the project was a complete failure.

In the mid-eighties, a project began to preserve the history by promoting tourism.  Today, the former Club grounds comprise a 240-acre site with 34 historic structures. The Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark, one of the largest ongoing restoration projects in the southeastern United States, maintains the 240-acre former Club grounds 240-acre with 34 historic structures. Most of these structures were the winter mansions of the club members.

Visitors today can enter the island for an $8 fee, which gives them access to the historic district. However, a trip to Jekyll Island can be so much more. You can dine in the historic grand dining room or stay as a guest at the Club House or one of several cottages. The Jekyll Island Museum offers a guided tour including entrance to several of the historic structures. Another great way to see Jekyll Island is by bike. There are over 20-miles of  Jekyll Island bike trails  all through the historic district, as well as the natural areas, which inspired the club’s formation in the first place.

Newport Rhode Island Gilded-Age Mansions

The Gilded Age historical mansions in Newport were built as lavish summer “cottages” in the late 1800s to early 1900s by some of the wealthiest Americans. Families like railroad tycoons, the Vanderbilts designed their 70-room “Breakers” mansion in 1893 with fixtures, furniture, art, and décor from around the world. Ten of these historical sites have been lovingly preserved and are open to the public. They’re all near each other, and many overlook the Atlantic Ocean. When you visit, you’ll see a snapshot of life in the Gilded Age when the upper class went to great lengths to create extravagant displays of wealth. If you take a servant-life tour, you’ll also see the stark contrast between the wealthy owners and the servants that lived, worked and depended on them to survive.

Whatever your interests, you’ll find a variety of tours, exhibits and events covering architecture, landscapes, social life, fashion, design, fine arts, and history at the Newport Mansions. You can purchase tickets online or at any of the homes. Adult tickets start at $18 for 1 property and go up from there, depending on which property or tours and how many you’d like to visit. Allow a minimum of 1 to 2 hours for each one, to enjoy the home tour, grounds and gift shop. Most of the houses are in the Bellevue Avenue-Ochre Point neighborhood of Newport.

Tips: The operating schedule for each house varies seasonally, so plan ahead and check the website to see which homes, tours and hours are available. If you love Christmas, then late November through January 1st is the perfect time to visit and see the homes lit up and decked out in their holiday glitter.

The Museum at Eldridge Street

Fort Jefferson, Florida

Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most remote National Parks in the US. It is located around 80 miles southwest of Key West, Florida.

Within the Dry Tortugas National Park lies an imposing Fort Jefferson, one of the most strategic fortress to defend the United States of America. Its location was chosen to protect both the Gulf of Mexico and Straits of Florida from approaching enemies ships. Even though it has never seen a battle, Fort Jefferson has assisted many ship routes, including the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Construction started in 1846 for the next thirty years with bricks brought from both sides of the US during the Civil War. Upon completion, Fort Jefferson holds the title of the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas.

What's your chance of seeing the northern lights tonight? A look at Saturday's forecast

Illuminating the night sky with pink, green and gray colors, the northern lights made its appearance in the United Kingdom and the northern half of the United States on Friday. The magical phenomena could happen again tonight.

The show fascinated many onlookers as they took out their phones to capture the beauty of the night sky. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued extreme (G5) conditions across the United States. A storm of this intensity has not been seen since October 2003. The storm gained the name "Halloween Storm" and caused many power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to Earth.com .

Meteorologists have predicted that the northern lights can be visible on Saturday as well as Sunday. If you are going outside to see the northern lights, forecasters want to remind the public that their solar eclipse glasses can be used for viewing the phenomenon.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for the next viewing of the northern lights.

The northern lights: Danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

Where can you see the northern lights tonight?

The Space and Weather Prediction Center  offers an experimental forecast map  that shows the aurora may be visible in a wide swath of the U.S. including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Other states like California, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida could also see the sky light up again for an encore performance. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather, pollution and cloud cover.

Below are forecast predictions for seeing the northern lights in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana on Saturday.

Rain and clouds are expected to damper expectations to see the aurora borealis around the Rochester, N.Y. area . Elsewhere in NY, the  Lower Hudson Valley could see the lights again, if weather permits. 

NWS maps predicting the intensity and location of the northern lights Saturday and Sunday show the aurora will be visible in mid to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be mostly cloudy with some rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. The NWS predicted 48% to 58% sky cover in metro Detroit from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. The western portion of both peninsulas are expected to have a lower cloud cover.

In the Milwaukee area , the evening is expected to bring mostly clear skies and overnight will have scattered clouds, said Tim Halbach, local meteorologist with the National Weather Service. 

Those living around the Cincinnati region could be treated to the northern lights Saturday night with the NWS' Wilmington, Ohio , office forecasting dry, partly cloudy conditions. Clouds shouldn't be an issue as many Ohioans reported seeing the lights Friday despite some cloud cover.

 In a telephone interview, Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the NOAA's  Space Weather Prediction Center  in Boulder, Co, said Indianapolis and surrounding areas might have a better chance of seeing the aurora today and Sunday.

They can expect clear skies tonight, Bettwy said.

"The aurora itself might be actually a little bit less active than it was last night," he told IndyStar. "I think the ability for you to see it will be better because the skies will be clearing out — at least in the Indianapolis area and that immediate vicinity."

Northern lights forecast path

If you want to get a better idea of if you will be able to see the northern lights from your state, check NOAA's aurora forecast tool , which has a 30-minute forecast window. 

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

Scientist left amazed by the aurora

The aurora seen on May 10 amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. She sent photos of the lights and the April eclipse to her friends in Italy. The northern lights weren't as prominent in Italy as it was in other places.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night isn't usual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

That's because the Earth's magnetic activity was at a nine, the highest the index goes, coupled with the Sun being at an active peak, causing eruptions. She added the colors cannot be predicted either as it depends on how the solar energetic particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Oxygen appears green, while nitrogen appears purple, blue or pink, she said.

"It just depends on which atoms in the atmosphere this particle interact with," Fruscione said.

She declined to predict how strong Saturday's aurora could be as it's not in her expertise, but said people make predictions all the time about space weather not just for the northern lights, but to ensure communications, space stations, astronauts and other matter in space doesn't get majorly disrupted.

Down on Earth, however, the activity is harmless to humans.

"It's completely harmless because the particles do not don't do not reach us," Fruscione said. "The reason why we see the colors is that the particle interacts with the atoms and they make these beautiful colors and that's it."

For Saturday, and any other day where chatter about the aurora borealis is high, Fruscione encouraged people to download an aurora forecasting app to their phones so they can see the colorful skies.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph,  according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle." 

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour. 

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

A sunspot has sent a stream of charged particles towards Earth.

As those particles hit the Earth's atmosphere they will be heated and start glowing producing beautiful aurora.

South looks north, as solar storm brings auroras

Lisa Upton is with the Southwest Research Institute. Social media is already filling with photos from places like Finland, Russia, Germany and New Zealand, which catches the same effect in the southern hemisphere. It's not clear how far down in the U.S. the aurora will spread, but Upton is keeping an eye out in Colorado.

Space weather forecasters expect the solar storm to peak overnight, but it will last throughout the weekend.

Solar Storm Intensifies, Filling Skies With Northern Lights

Officials warned of potential blackouts or interference with navigation and communication systems this weekend, as well as auroras as far south as Southern California or Texas.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off the highest-level geomagnetic storm in Earth’s atmosphere on Friday that is expected to make the northern lights visible as far south as Florida and Southern California and could interfere with power grids, communications and navigations system.

It is the strongest such storm to reach Earth since Halloween of 2003. That one was strong enough to create power outages in Sweden and damage transformers in South Africa.

The effects could continue through the weekend as a steady stream of emissions from the sun continues to bombard the planet’s magnetic field.

The solar activity is so powerful that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors space weather, issued an unusual storm watch for the first time in 19 years, which was then upgraded to a warning. The agency began observing outbursts on the sun’s surface on Wednesday, with at least five heading in the direction of Earth.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday morning.

For people in many places, the most visible part of the storm will be the northern lights, known also as auroras. But authorities and companies will also be on the lookout for the event’s effects on infrastructure, like global positioning systems, radio communications and even electrical power.

While the northern lights are most often seen in higher latitudes closer to the North Pole, people in many more parts of the world are already getting a show this weekend that could last through the early part of next week.

As Friday turned to Saturday in Europe, people across the continent described skies hued in a mottling of colors.

Alfredo Carpineti , an astrophysicist, journalist and author in North London, saw them with his husband from the rooftop of their apartment building.

“It is incredible to be able to see the aurora directly from one’s own backyard,” he said. “I was hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of green on the horizon, but it was all across the sky in both green and purple.”

Here’s what you need to know about this weekend’s solar event.

How will the storm affect people on Earth?

A geomagnetic storm watch or warning indicates that space weather may affect critical infrastructure on or orbiting near Earth. It may introduce additional current into systems, which could damage pipelines, railroad tracks and power lines.

According to Joe Llama, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, communications that rely on high frequency radio waves, such as ham radio and commercial aviation , are most likely to suffer. That means it is unlikely that your cellphone or car radio, which depend on much higher frequency radio waves, will conk out.

Still, it is possible for blackouts to occur. As with any power outage, you can prepare by keeping your devices charged and having access to backup batteries, generators and radio.

The most notable solar storm recorded in history occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it lasted for nearly a week, creating aurora that stretched down to Hawaii and Central America and impacting hundreds of thousands of miles of telegraph lines.

But that was technology of the 19th century, used before scientists fully understood how solar activity disrupted Earth’s atmosphere and communication systems.

“That was an extreme level event,” said Shawn Dahl, a forecaster at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “We are not anticipating that.”

Unlike tornado watches and warnings, the target audience for NOAA’s announcements is not the public.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The goal of the announcements is to give agencies and companies that operate this infrastructure time to put protection measures in place to mitigate any effects.

“If everything is working like it should, the grid will be stable and they’ll be able to go about their daily lives,” Mr. Steenburgh said.

Will I be able to see the northern lights?

It is possible that the northern lights may grace the skies this week over places that don’t usually see them. The best visibility is outside the bright lights of cities.

Clouds or stormy weather could pose a problem in some places. But if the skies are clear, even well south of where the aurora is forecast to take place, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone. The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Another opportunity could be viewing sunspots during the daytime, if your skies are clear. As always, do not look directly at the sun without protection. But if you still have your eclipse glasses lying around from the April 8 event, you may try to use them to try to spot the cluster of sunspots causing the activity.

How strong is the current geomagnetic storm?

Giant explosions on the surface of the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, send streams of energetic particles into space. But the sun is large, and such outbursts may not cross our planet as it travels around the star. But when these particles create a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, it is known as a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA classifies these storms on a “G” scale of 1 to 5, with G1 being minor and G5 being extreme. The most extreme storms can cause widespread blackouts and damage to infrastructure on Earth. Satellites may also have trouble orienting themselves or sending or receiving information during these events.

The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface — that is about 16 times the diameter of Earth. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Why is this happening now?

The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle, and right now, it is approaching a solar maximum. Three other severe geomagnetic storms have been observed so far in the current activity cycle, which began in December 2019, but none were predicted to cause effects strong enough on Earth to warrant a watch or warning announcement.

The cluster of sunspots generating the current storm is the largest seen in this solar cycle, NOAA officials said. They added that the activity in this cycle has outperformed initial predictions .

More flares and expulsions from this cluster are expected, but because of the sun’s rotation the cluster will be oriented in a position less likely to affect Earth. In the coming weeks, the sunspots may appear again on the left side of the sun, but it is difficult for scientists to predict whether this will cause another bout of activity.

“Usually, these don’t come around packing as much of a punch as they did originally,” Mr. Dahl said. “But time will tell on that.”

Where you can see northern lights Sunday night from another solar storm

Sunday night could offer another opportunity to see the northern lights unusually far south, though less than earlier predicted

If you missed the recent auroras over the past two days, you may have another chance. The sun will continue to send more activity to Earth on Sunday night and early this week.

Fast eruptions from the sun are expected to slam into Earth on Sunday night and Monday morning, triggering another round of geomagnetic storms, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sunday is predicted to offer the best chance for aurora-chasing before this round of solar activity diminishes.

After predicting geomagnetic storms of level G4 or G5 — the most intense rating — on Sunday morning, NOAA downgraded the forecast to G3, meaning less likelihood for a repeat of Friday night , when storms brought aurora sightings down to Florida and Mexico.

Activity is expected to wane by the pre-dawn hours of Monday, although storm levels are still predicted to reach moderate (G2) to strong (G3). Auroras could be spotted as far south as Iowa and Washington state with the naked eye, but cameras could capture the dancing lights farther south.

By Tuesday morning, NOAA forecasts that geomagnetic storm activity will diminish to minor levels (G1). During a minor storm, only higher latitudes such as northern Michigan or Maine typically see auroras.

Will there be clouds in my area?

In the Northeast, people may struggle to see the aurora through clouds on Sunday night, although some breaks are possible toward Monday morning. Unfortunately, clouds will blanket much of the area Monday night to Tuesday morning.

In the Mid-Atlantic, the skies will be mostly clear from Sunday night into Monday, providing promising views from West Virginia to South Carolina. Heavy cloud cover moves in over the region on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The southern United States (from Georgia to western Texas) will be largely covered in clouds from late Sunday night to Tuesday morning.

The West Coast and northern Plains should have primarily clear skies from Sunday night to Tuesday morning.

If your region has a cloudy forecast over the next few days, don’t necessarily fret. Sometimes breaks emerge in the cloud canopy. And while clouds will make it harder to see the northern lights, sometimes they also make for interesting photos .

Will you be able to see the northern lights around D.C.?

It is unlikely that auroras will be visible Sunday night in the D.C. region, according to NOAA’s 7:15 p.m. update.

Washingtonians had a brief window during which to see auroras early Saturday morning . But there were too many clouds and the geomagnetic storm wasn’t quite strong enough for northern lights to be seen Saturday night into Sunday morning — although auroras were reported in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains at 10:30 p.m. and about 12:30 a.m., as well as in the mountains to the west.

You will improve your chances of seeing the aurora borealis significantly by finding an observing location away from city lights (this advice applies to any population center). Also, the lights — if they appear — may be rather faint and only visible through your camera lens, which is more sensitive to light than your eyes. Look to the north to try to find them.

Where has the aurora already been seen this weekend?

The geomagnetic activity over the past few days has been one for the books, producing once-in-a-lifetime or once-in-a-generation aurora displays.

The weekend began strong with an extreme (G5) storm on Friday into Saturday morning. One space weather physicist collected aurora observations on X from every state in the United States, and from much of the Northern Hemisphere — including rare places like Italy, Austria, London, Mexico and India. Auroras were even spotted in tropical locations, including Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the lights — known as the aurora australis — were photographed in Chile , Argentina , New Zealand and Australia.

Although activity decreased Saturday night, storm levels still briefly reached into strong (G3) to severe (G4) levels. At its peak, people were able to snap aurora pictures in the mountains of Virginia.

Were any satellite or power grid operations affected?

Intense geomagnetic storms can disrupt satellite, GPS and power grid operations. After Friday’s storm, NOAA received reports of issues on some power grids and high-frequency radio and GPS communications.

The last time a G5 storm hit was in 2003. That one also brought widespread auroras and some power interruptions in certain regions of the globe.

Why has there been so much auroral activity recently?

The slew of auroral activity stems from a particularly bustling area on the sun known as active region 3664. The region — measuring about 17 times the diameter of Earth — is marked with a cluster of dark splotches, known as sunspots. Sunspots are areas on the sun’s surface where its magnetic field is much higher than anywhere else on the sun. These magnetically complex regions are often the source of large, explosive bursts on the sun.

Last week, the sunspot group launched multiple eruptions from its surface — called coronal mass ejections — toward Earth. Coronal mass ejections are large clouds of solar energy and magnetized plasma that can temporarily disturb Earth’s magnetosphere, if aimed correctly. Some solar particles travel along Earth’s magnetic field into our upper atmosphere, exciting molecules and releasing photons of light, or the aurora.

Geomagnetic activity from this sunspot group will last until around Tuesday, then the sunspot group will rotate away from Earth’s view. If it rotates all the way around the sun and faces back to Earth in several weeks, it could send additional activity our way. However, most sunspot groups weaken on second appearance.

NOAA scientists continually monitor the sun and are tracking any potential activity from other sunspot groups.
