Dave Chappelle cleared to host 24 shows at Yellow Springs' Wirrig Pavilion this summer
Local Dave Chappelle fans will have plenty of chances to see him perform this summer after the Board of Zoning Appeals of Miami Township voted to allow the comedian to host a string of shows at the Wirrig Pavilion in Yellow Springs .
The board voted unanimously last night to approve a request from Wirrig Pavilion owner Steve Wirrig, who applied for a temporary use variance for his property to be used for 24 of Chappelle's "Cornfield Shows."
According to Dayton TV station WDTN , the board heard nearly two and a half hours of testimony from residents prior to the vote, during which over 70 locals spoke out in favor of the shows and only three argued against them. Chappelle first began hosting his socially distanced shows at the Wirrig Pavilion in May of 2020. According to WDTN, those who spoke up in favor of the shows returning to the venue said the comedy events benefited attendees' mental health during the pandemic and brought new business to local shops.

Chappelle also hosted a handful of 400-person shows at Wirrig Pavilion last fall, which Wirrig said brought in $11.8 million to the state of Ohio, $9.4 million to the Dayton region, $6.2 million to Greene County and $4.1 million to Yellow Springs.
According to Wirrig's application , each show will allow 1,000 people. A maximum of 200 cars will be allowed to park on the property, with the rest of the attendees being bused in from local parking areas. Gates to the pavilion will open at 7:30 p.m. and shows held on Fridays and Saturdays will end by midnight, while shows held on Sundays will end by 11 p.m. Four local food trucks will also be on-site for each event.
The first comedy show is scheduled for May 26. The series will run through Sept. 5.
The fate of Chappelle's own Yellow Springs restaurant and comedy club , Firehouse Eatery and Live from YS, is uncertain amidst Oberer Homes' ongoing development plans. Chappelle publicly opposed rezoning a 53-acre development in the area for higher-density homes, which the village council ultimately voted down this February.
However, Oberer is still set to proceed with its 143 single-family home development, a project that Chappelle's publicist said has caused the comedian to reevaluate his development plans.

COMING SOON: Dave Chappelle’s comedy club in Yellow Springs moving ahead
Dave Chappelle’s planned restaurant and comedy club in Yellow Springs earned unanimous approval from the village planning commission on Tuesday night and will move forward with construction.
According to the plans submitted to the Yellow Springs Planning Commission, Chappelle plans to call the restaurant “Firehouse Eatery” and the comedy club “Live from YS.”
Chappelle’s company, Iron Table Holdings LLC, bought the former Miami Twp. Fire Station in December. The station is located at 225 Corry St.
Credit: DaytonDailyNews
The restaurant and comedy club would sell food and alcohol, according to the plans submitted. There would be both indoor and outdoor seating and separate seating for performances.
The restaurant would be open until 10 p.m. seven days a week, according to village plans. Shows would be scheduled for four days a week between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Max Crome, of Max Crome Architecture, who is working with Chappelle on this project, also addressed parking during the meeting.
He said there will be parking available at the club, as well as parking elsewhere that is close to the bike path in Yellow Springs. People would be able to park and walk to the club. If that is not a viable option, Crome said there may also be shuttle run from another of Chappelle’s holdings at 314 Dayton St.
Chappelle spoke at the Planning Commission meeting, and he said the club would put the village in a good position to put its best foot forward.
“If we build this thing, the greats will come,” Chappelle said.
He said a lot of local talent wants to climb the ladder, and there are people who are trying to make it who can’t because of a lack of places to perform.
“I’m trying to make a way for our talents to be showcased as well as my friends’ talents,” Chappelle said.
Several people spoke in favor of the comedy club at the planning commission meeting.
Jamie Sharp, representing the Yellow Springs Downtown Business Association, said there was resounding, unanimous support for the comedy club.
“As a group, we are all excited about the opportunities and possibilities this project is bringing to us, and we’re really happy to welcome Dave in our business community,” Sharp said.
However, some people still expressed concerns about the club. Wayne Gulden and Bette Kelley live across the street from the comedy club and have lived in that home for 30 years. Gulden and Kelley said they were concerned about parking, though they hoped the comedy club was successful.
“I fear that patrons at the shows will fill up the adjacent lot, leaving the other business patrons with no options,” Kelley said.

Dave Chappelle Opening A Comedy Club and Restaurant In His Hometown Yellow Springs, Ohio
Comedian Dave Chappelle is staying true to his Ohio roots by opening a comedy club in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio.
After three decades of success as a standup comic, the Chappelle’s Show creator will be adding to his legacy in the form of a brick-and-mortar establishment where people can come to laugh and eat.
On Sept. 14, a planning commission in Yellow Springs unanimously approved the plans to launch construction on Chappelle’s comedy club, WHIO reports .
The architect overseeing the project is Max Crome of Crome Architecture, who is mapping out how his team will transform the Miami Township firehouse into what will now be known as the “Firehouse Eatery,” along with the “Live From YS” comedy club attached on the side.
Development plans show that the eatery will be open every day until 10 p.m., with the comedy club hosting scheduled shows four days a week, between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.
“I’m not just trying to make a club, I’m trying to make a way,” Chappelle said during the planning commission meeting. “I’m trying to make a venue for our talents to be showcased, as well as my friends’ talents, so we can shine and be all the great things we can be in the world.”
The construction begins nine months after Chappelle first unveiled his plans to turn the former firehouse into a comedy club, EW reports .
Crome says the new club will provide an “intimate” setting for comedians and have a maximum capacity of 140 people. Chappelle says the size will be much like the setting of comedy clubs Chappelle performed at in New York City at the start of his career.
Chappelle is confident that he will be able to bring out big-name comedians to the comedy club. His name and respect in the comedy world are more than enough to persuade his close friends and comedy legends to make their way to Yellow Springs, Ohio.
“If we build this thing, I will tell you, all the greats will come. They’re very excited about it,” Chappelle assured the group.

15 Dave Chappelle summer shows approved

On Wednesday, May 3, the Miami Township Board of Zoning Appeals, or BZA, gave the green light to another series of outdoor shows hosted by local resident and comedian Dave Chappelle at the Wirrig family pavilion.
In a vote of 4–0, the board approved a temporary conditional use request by pavilion owner Steve Wirrig to hold 15 ticketed performances at his rural property on weekends over the coming summer.
BZA Chair Richard Silliman cited the performances’ economic benefits to Miami Township and Yellow Springs in his motion to approve Wirrig’s application. Along with Silliman, board members David Neuhardt, Geoffrey Garrison and Barbara Krabec voted affirmatively, with Amy Achor recusing herself from the decision.
Owing to the Wirrig Pavilion’s agricultural zoning status within the township, any commercial activity on the land must be approved by the BZA. Wednesday’s meeting was Wirrig’s fifth time in three years approaching the board to authorize a series of Chappelle shows.
Located between U.S. 68 North and Meredith Road, the pavilion has been the site of dozens of star-studded performances hosted by Chappelle in the summers since 2020. Past shows have been headlined by such celebrities as John Stewart, Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman and others.
This year’s temporary use permit extends between June 1 and Oct. 8, but as Wirrig told the News following the meeting, no firm schedule for the shows has been set.
“That’s entirely up to Dave and the production team,” he said. “It’s possible that the first one would be in July.”

A number of stipulations for the shows were outlined in Wirrig’s application. Shows will occur no more than three times per week, and will not be held on Sundays, except for three-day holiday weekends. Consistent with the 2022 shows, capacity will not exceed 1,000 ticketed attendees. However, no more than 200 cars may be parked at the pavilion. A bussing service will accommodate the overflow. Local food trucks and vendors are permitted to be present at each performance.
While ticket prices for the coming series have not been set, previous year’s tickets have been around $400 for a pair.
Unlike the April 28, 2022, BZA hearing when Wirrig stood before a crowd of 60-some attendees when he sought the board’s approval for 24 shows for 2022, this Wednesday’s meeting was far smaller. Approximately 20 area residents were in attendance. Four people spoke in favor of the shows and urged the board’s approval; none spoke against Wirrig’s request.
Also present for Wednesday’s meeting were Zoning Inspector Richard Zopf and the board’s attorney Jennifer Huber.
Additional coverage of the Wednesday, May 3, Miami Township Board of Zoning Appeals meeting will appear in the May 12 print edition of the Yellow Springs News.

Dave Chappelle’s summer shows approved in Yellow Springs

Fifteen summer comedy shows hosted by comedian/actor Dave Chappelle have been approved in Yellow Springs, according to a Miami Township Board of Zoning Appeals application.
The temporary conditional use request brought to the board by Steve Wirrig on May 3 passed with a vote of 4-0. Wirrig is the owner of Wirrig Pavilion, a rural property in Yellow Springs where Chappelle has performed “cornfield shows” the past three summers. Celebrity guests have included Ali Wong, Chris Rock, Chelsea Handler, John Mayer, David Letterman, Jon Stewart and more.

“Mr. Chappelle and his team would like the opportunity to conduct a limited run of additional shows this summer, between June 1st and October 8th, to further highlight the success and national recognition of these events in our community,” Wirrig wrote in his zoning application. “While Mr. Chappelle could be conducting shows at mass theaters around the world, he would like to conduct this string of shows to further honor his community.”
In the document, Wirrig referenced Chappelle’s past shows, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic with Chappelle’s “intimate socially distanced” series “Dave Chappelle and Friends.” More installments occurred in 2021 and 2022.
Wirrig said the shows give recognition and positive media attention to the area, making the community more attractive for growth. He emphasized Chappelle draws crowds from all over the country, and those diverse attendees shop local and lodge near the village. The shows also employ local law enforcement, security, food vendors, production crews and more.
“It is a humorous respite in the open field surrounded by native Ohio woodlands,” Wirrig noted in the application. “Patrons often cite the peacefulness of the surroundings and the chance for a good laugh as an experience that positively impacts their mental health.”
According to the permit, the shows will be limited to 1,000 ticketholders and only 200 cars can be parked at the property. Food trucks and local vendors have been approved to be at the show, and a busing service will transport any overflow to the venue. Shows were also stipulated to not be held on Sundays unless it is a holiday weekend, and no more than three shows will be presented in a single week.

Pete Davidson, Blues Traveler and more: 5 shows to see in the Coachella Valley this week
The desert sun's weekly hot picks column shares can't-miss live performances in the coachella valley and beyond.
Here are my picks for this weekend's can't-miss live music in the Coachella Valley and surrounding communities.
Comedy: Pete Davidson is renowned for many characters on "Saturday Night Live" such as the nonchalant and apathetic Chad, an irritating restaurant patron known as Diner Lobster Guy, the SoundCloud rapper Guaplord and of course Just Pete, his parody of Ryan Gosling as Ken in "Barbie." He's also known for dating Kim Kardashian and was referred to as "Skete" by Kardashian's ex-husband Kanye West.
In addition to his stand-up comedy, Davidson also wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical film "The King Of Staten Island" and the Peacock series "Bupkis," both of which revealed a difficult childhood after his father, a New York City firefighter, died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, family relationships and his struggle with drug addiction.
Davidson will perform on Saturday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino as part of his "Prehab Tour."
If you go: 8 p.m., Saturday, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, 84-245 Indio Springs Parkway, Indio. $59 to $89. fantasyspringsresort.com
Thursday - Saturday
Magic: Mentalist and magician Paul Draper is renowned for his performances that unlock the secrets of human nature and defy reality. His abilities have been featured on TV shows such as "Pawn Stars," "Ghost Adventures," "Mindfreak" and more. As an anthropologist, Draper has taught at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and served as a master lecturer at Yale University.
Draper will perform multiple shows on Thursday to Saturday at Marvyn's Magic Theater.
If you go: Multiple performances Thursday-Saturday, Marvyn's Magic Theater, 46-630 Washington Street, La Quinta. $75. marvynsmagictheater.com
Rock: When the jam band genre reemerged during the '90s, many of the new generation of bands such as Spin Doctors, Dave Matthews Band, Rusted Root and others achieved something the genre's icons failed to do, write and record songs blended with mainstream pop appeal that received massive radio airtime. Many recorded at least one massive hit. One of those bands was Blues Traveler with the 1994 song "Run Around."
Blues Traveler's frontman John Popper is renowned for his harmonica playing and became a celebrity outside of the band after appearing on the TV shows "Roseanne," "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" and "Z Rock."
Blues Traveler will perform on Friday at Spotlight 29 Casino.
If you go: 8 p.m., Friday, Spotlight 29 Casino, 46-200 Harrison Place, Coachella. Tickets start at $35. spotlight29.com
Musical: Chances are you've heard of Aesop's fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." Tutti Frutti Productions has created a musical reimagining of the classic storyteller's fable featuring actors and musicians for families with children.
"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" will be staged on Saturday at the McCallum Theatre.
If you go: 2 p.m., Saturday, McCallum Theatre, 73-000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert. $15. mccallumtheatre.org
Rock: David J has had an illustrious music career as the bassist of the goth punk band Bauhaus and Love and Rockets. He's also found success outside of those bands as a solo artist, producer and writer. In 2022, he released the album "What The Patrons Heard," a project that was over three decades in the making.
David J will perform on Saturday at Pappy and Harriet's.
