We figure that the average car can go at least 250 miles on one tank of gas or one electric charge. Some, like a Toyota Corolla or Prius can go even further.

These day trips can be made with gallons or battery charge to spare to allow some exploring on the way to and from your destination.

Here are some things to do and places to see within 100 miles of Jacksonville.

Recommended Jacksonville Florida Day Trips

Alexander Springs Recreational Area, Ocala National Forest, canoeing, swimming, kayaking, camping.

Amelia Island Horseback Riding, Fernandina Beach.  You can ride on the Atlantic Ocean beach.  Fees vary by selected ride and number of people.

Appleton Museum of Art , Ocala, stunning example of classical architecture clad in Italian travertine marble. The 81,610-square-foot museum features 30,000 square feet of gallery space.

Blue Spring State Park, Orange City park is a tremendous spot to observe manatees sheltering from the cold in the clear waters from November to March.

Bronson  is a small town west of Gainesville where you can visit the cemetery and see the grave of Bo Diddley.

Castillo de San Marcos, The oldest 17th century fort in North America, this well preserved fort dominates the waterfront in downtown St. Augustine.

Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary, Jacksonville non-profit sanctuary that gives big cats a permanent home.  They have lions, tigers, pumas, leopards, lynxes and more. 

Cross Creek  is south of Gainesville and was the home for many years of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It was the setting for her famous novel "The Yearling" as well as "Cross Creek". She is buried in a quiet cemetery nearby.

Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, Jacksonville.  The Cummer has one of the finest permanent art collections in Florida, with nearly 5,000 objects. 

Daytona Beach  is the motor city and has hard packed sands where you can drive your car on the beach. Home of NASCAR and many famous races including the  Daytona 500. Lots of great lodging and dining opportunities.

Daytona International Speedway If you visit during other than the featured events, you can go on a first come-first served tour.

DeLand  is home of Stetson University and is loaded with art galleries and good restaurants.

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park, Gainesville.  You walk down a 232-step wooden staircase into the bottom of a geological formation that has been attracting visitors for well over a century. 

Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, Ocala museum has more than 90 race cars on display and another 50 antique cars.  Garlits is a former champion drag racer.

Farm Tours of Ocala, Ocala 3 hours and 15 minute tour of working farms where you can go behind the scenes and chat with pros who work with thoroughbreds.

Fernandina Beach  is one of the oldest towns in Florida. It has a beautiful restored downtown area with many gift shops and a lot of good restaurants. Many historic buildings to admire, and a working waterfront make this a good place to visit.

Flagler College (Ponce de Leon Hotel) St. Augustine hotel was built by railroad tycoon Henry Flagler in 1888 and is a National Historic Landmark.You can take a tour and explore.

Flagler Beach is a great little beach town with almost no condos between State Road A1A and the Atlantic Ocean beach.

Flagler Beachfront Winery  is north of Daytona and is a fun place to visit while you visit the great sand beaches.

Florida Museum of Natural History  is the biggest and the best and is on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Prehistoric animals on display and frequently scheduled butterfly release events. The kids will love you for putting this on your Jacksonville Florida day trips.

Fort Clinch State Park  is in Fernandina Beach and included Fort Clinch, a ancient fort going back to before the Civil War. Re-enactors in uniform will entertain you. Beaches and camping are also in the park.

Fort Gates Ferry  is a historic ride across the St Johns River between the Ocala National Forest and Fruitland.

Frederick Delius Home  is located on the campus of Jacksonville University.  He was a famous composer.

Gainesville  has many attractions in addition to the large museums and university. Many historic buildings and structures on the National Register of Historic Places.

Gamble Rogers State Park  was named for a famous Florida folk singer and storyteller who lost his life in the ocean trying to save somebody who was drowning. It has one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida.

Ginnie Springs Outdoors  is a privately owned campground that also has cottages and great canoeing, kayaking and diving. Super clear waters add to your enjoyment.

Glen St. Mary is a village of 500 people 32 miles west of Jacksonville that was voted Florida's Outstanding Rural Community of the Year.

Green Cove Springs  is an historic town on the St. Johns River with many well preserved examples of Old Florida buildings.

High Springs is a small quaint town in the middle of Florida freshwater spring country.  A great place for outfitting and kayak or snorkeling trip.

Ichetucknee Inner Tube Trip Ichetucknee Springs State Park. A Florida tradition for years, floating down the clear cool river. 

Jacksonville  is the major city in Northeast Florida. It is home to many insurance companies, and straddles the beautiful St. Johns River. The city has many things to do and places to see.

Jacksonville Museum of Science and History, Interactive exhibits about your body's systems , energy exhibits, and animal encounters.  Also a boat tour on the St. Johns River.  

Jacksonville Zoo  is one of the finest in the state. You will enjoy the train ride and the many animals on display in natural settings. It is located in North Jacksonville.

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens  is an unusual display of natural vegetation and trees in Gainesville.

Kingsley Plantation, Jacksonville.  Located on Fort George Island are the owner's house built about 1798 and the remains of 25 slave cabins.

La Chua Trail, Paynes Prairie  is a preserve where you might see horses, bison, wading birds, gators, and more.

Lake City   is an old Florida town with a lot of history that goes back to Civil War days. It was the birthplace of the school that merged to become the Univesity of Florida.

Live Oak is a small historic town near Lake City in North Florida with a history that goes back to Civil War Days.

Log Cabin Winery is a quaint little vineyard and wine making operation in Satsuma near the St. Johns River. Enjoy wine tasting and seeing the operation.

Macclenny is 30 miles west of Jacksonville and is a typical Old Florida small town with several well preserved historic buildings.

Mandarin  is on the St. Johns River south of Jacksonville.  It was the home of Harriett Beecher Stowe and Clark's Fish Camp is there now.

Marineland  is a Florida historical treasure south of St. Augustine Beach. It was once Florida's largest tourist attraction. These days it is scaled down, but still has dolphin encounters and other attractions.  It remains one of my favorite Jacksonville Florida day trips.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park,  Cross Creek.  You will experience what 1930s farm life was like when the famous author lived and worked here.  Her Florida Cracker style home and farm has been restored and is preserved.

McIntosh  has a population of only 469 people but has almost 70 buildings in its designated historic district.

Melrose  is a small Victorian village near Gainesville with historic buildings and a fine restaurant.

Micanopy  is a historic tiny town named for a great Seminole chief.  Nice antique stores and restaurants.

Mill Creek Retirement Farm For Horses  is a place where retired horses can live their lives out with dignity and comfort.

Ocala  is the center of horse country, and has a lot of great statuary celebrating this fact scattered all over the city. Many good restaurants and lodgings, and home to nearby Silver Springs, and Old Florida tourist attraction.

Ocala National Forest is a sprawling wilderness area in central Florida covering over 600 square miles of land and is one of the oldest and largest national forests in the continental United States. Hiking, birding, trails, springs, and nature..

Oldest House Museum Complex, The Oldest House Museum Complex is located across from the historic National Guard building in downtown St. Augustine.

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, Site of a significant Civil War battle.  U.S. Colored troops took part in the battle.  You can see exhibits and artifacts in the visitor center.

Palatka  is on the St. Johns River and has a lovely historic district and is home to Mulholland House and Ravine State Gardens.

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park 100 Savannah Blvd., Micanopy, FL 32667. Tel: 352-466-3397. A 22,000 acre savannah with a wide variety of wildlife including bison and horses in addition to hundreds of bird varieties.

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Ponce Inlet lighthouse is on an inlet south of Daytona Beach.  You can climb to the top and see a fantastic view of the ocean and beaches.  

Princess Place Preserve  is a historic site once owned by a princess and now a place of tranquility and history.

Ravine Gardens State Park is a Palatka treasure with beautiful gardens, trails, suspension bridges, and amazing topography.

San Sebastian Winery  is conveniently located not too far west of downtown St. Augustine. You can enjoy wine tasting from their comfortable upstairs deck, and watch how wine is made.

Silver Springs State Park   in Ocala is home to a former private attraction where you can enjoy riding on the glass-bottomed boats and being amazed at the crystal-clear blue waters of Silver Springs. 

St. Augustine  is the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. It was founded by Spaniards in 1565 and is still dotted with beautiful old buildings and cobbled streets. It is a journey back in time, complete with an ancient fort on the water.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm  is the oldest alligator attraction in Florida. No visit to St. Augustine is complete without visiting the farm and enjoying their fascinating shows featuring snakes, gators and other denizens of the sunshine state.

St Augustine Lighthouse  gives you the best view of the Ancient City and surroundings if you climb to its top.

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park  is a natural slice of Old Florida. It has many folk culture exhibits and is the setting every Memorial Day weekend for the Florida Folk Festival.

Tangled Oaks Vineyard  is a family owned business in Grandin not far from Palatka. You will be able to sample their wine and watch how it is made. Jacksonville Florida day trips can always be enhanced by a little wine.

Treaty Oak  is a beloved 250 year old giant Southern live oak in a quiet park in a busy city neighborhood .

University of Florida  is home of the Fightin' Gators and was once the largest university in the state.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park  on the barrier island east of Palm Coast has beautiful trees, gardens, and amazing rock formations on the beach.

White Springs is a small town where Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park is located.  Nice old rural town with interesting buildings.

There’s lots to do in Jacksonville, but if you’re seeking fewer crowds and less traffic, there are smaller towns less than two hours away worth a visit.

1. Lake City

For outdoor fun, travel about an hour west to Lake City. O’Leno State Park pays homage to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with preserved buildings, museums, and stature. Their Nature Center highlights local wildlife. The Santa Fe River flows through it for kayaking or canoeing. There are two campgrounds, Dogwood and Magnolia. Ichetucknee Springs State Park is a popular tubing spot. Festivals include the Wuffstock Festival , an admission-free day of doggie fun every November. 

Lake City’s main street, Marion Avenue, has no big-name department stores. You’ll park free next to places like Nearly New Consignment, Blue Goose Art Studio, and similar boutique stores. Halpatter Brewing Company’s restaurant and beer garden is kid- and dog-friendly. Marion Street Bistro is a good downtown choice.

The Blanche Hotel , built in 1902, was just renovated. Downstairs has boutique shops like Prohibition, a bar with a 1920s vibe, and the Daily Cup of Jo to get you started.

2. St. Augustine

There’s plenty to see traveling south from Jacksonville. St. Augustine has new attractions plus the old favorites. Step through the City Gates. Castillo de San Marcos stands guard over the Ancient City. You’ll find The Fountain of Youth , Oldest House , Old Jail , and Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum . The Lightner Museum showcases fantastic treasures. Stroll St. George Street to The Colonial Quarter or St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine . St. Augustine Lighthouse has a ghost tour. Fort Mose and the ACCORD Museum tell African American history.

For outdoor fun, hit the beaches. Go kayaking on Salt Run or camping in Anastasia or Faver Dykes State Park . St. Augustine Eco Tours Boating Expeditions offers choices. See wildlife at St. Augustine Alligator Farm or swim with dolphins at Marineland .

New attractions include the Pirate and Treasure Museum , the Medieval Torture Museum , the Classic Car Museum , and the St. Augustine Distillery . After touring the distillery, you can dine in the Ice Plant Restaurant.

Saint Francis Inn and Casa Monica are two historical lodging choices.

Pro Tip: Parking is expensive. Choose the Red or Green Hop-on Hop-off Trolleys .

3. Green Cove Springs

Drive 15 minutes south on Highway 17 for the charm of small-town Old Florida in Green Cove Springs .

Green Cove Springs Spring Park and City Pier represent the heart of town that, in the late 1900s, was once a busy tourist location. Visitors came to soak in the warm water spring that still supplies the community pool. Events include Food Truck Friday and Third Saturday Market in the park.

Camp Chowenwaw County Park on Black Creek, once a private Girl Scout camp, offers camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, and more. The Railroad Museum and neighboring haunted Old Jail are fun and informative. Clay County Fair in April brings big-name entertainment to the area.

For dining, Ronnie’s , across from Spring Park, boasts the world’s best wings.

River Park Inn offers modern comfort and beautiful antiques catty-corner from Spring Park.

DeLand is one of Florida’s best-kept secrets. Swim in its cool springs or watch manatees play. Blue Spring State Park’s best time for manatee watching is mid-November until mid-March. It offers camping and cabins. The best deal is the two-hour boat tour. Hontoon Island State Park , only reachable by boat, has tent camping or primitive cabins. You can rent a kayak, canoe, or bicycle to explore the island and look for alligators, bears, and other wildlife. DeLeon Springs State Park rents kayaks and canoes and has an eco/history boat tour. Try its Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant. The tables are equipped with griddles where you cook your own pancakes. The servers bring your choices of batter and toppings. Lyonia Environmental Center offers interpretive exhibits and wildlife.

Wings of the West , a collection of six wings painted by Erica Group, starts near West Volusia Visitor’s Center in Artisans Alley. Downtown, browse antique shops and unique boutique stores. Athens Theater commands your attention.

DeLand Airport is one of the world’s skydiving hotspots. The Wings of the West Skydive DeLand Wings are bi-plane wings that give a nod to the area’s flight history.

Urban Brick is a locally owned Italian restaurant. Bake Chop is a good lunch choice. For upscale dining, try The Table or Santorini Greek Restaurant .

The DeLand Hotel , a restored Roaring ’20s Era boutique hotel just a few blocks from downtown, has a restaurant with outdoor seating and a bar.

5. Fernandina Beach

Go north for 15 minutes to Fernandina Beach. For history and ghosts, visit Ft. Clinch . Amelia Island Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Florida. There’s a 50-block historic district where the Palace Saloon , the state’s oldest continuously operating bar, is located. Amelia River Cruises takes you to see sea wildlife and the wild horses of Cumberland Island National Seashore. Marlin and Barrel Distillery offers tours and handcrafted rum and vodka. The American Beach Museum tells the story of “The Negro Ocean Playground,” a Black beach, during segregation.

6. Georgia’s Golden Isles

Go East into Georgia’s Golden Isles in less than an hour and 15 minutes. They’re like three sisters with a lot of the same basic attractions but different personalities.

Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island , accessible only by National Park Ferry or private boats, is the wild child of the sisters. The oldest standing building on the island, Tabby House, was built around 1790 by General Nathaniel Greene as a temporary dwelling. The most striking structure is Dungeness Castle ruins . Built by Thomas Carnegie on the site of the original Dungeness ruins, fire ravaged it in 1959, leaving only a skeleton. Ice House Museum, originally the Carnegies’ icehouse, covers the island history.

Feral horses, descendants of horses abandoned from early settlers to dray horses abandoned during the Civil War, are one species of animal life that you’ll see.

Greyfield , the site of JFK. Jr.’s wedding reception, is the only lodging on the island.

Footsteps Tour walks you through the Dungeness Historic District, while the Land and Legacies Tour travels to the north end of the island where participants view Plum Orchard, Stafford Cemetery, and the African American Settlement. Learn more about the Cumberland Island tours here .

There are five primitive campgrounds on the island.

Pro Tips: To get around the island, you can hike or bring a bike or rent one at the concession stand. Bring food and drinks with you and haul out trash. This is the only destination I recommend that might be strenuous if you or someone you’re traveling with is challenged by walking a lot or being outdoors for several hours. There are no restaurants or motorized transportation, and all the facilities on the island are primitive.

St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island is the stately sister. Fort Frederica , the largest, most-costly British fort in North America, is where its modern history began in 1736. Parts of the fort, the barracks, and some foundations remain.

Hamilton Plantation and Slave Cabins offers a glimpse into what life was like for enslaved people on St. Simons. Two cabins remain. They’re just a few blocks down Arthur J. Moore Drive from Gascoigne Bluff Park.

If you are seeing faces peering at you from the gnarled oaks, you haven’t lost it. You’re seeing the Tree Spirits of St. Simons!

One name you’ll hear on Saint Simons Island is Eugenia Price, the novelist who moved here and wrote about the real-life settlers. Christ Church , built in 1884 to replace the church destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War, has a cemetery with stones dating to the 1700s. It contains the remains of many of Eugenia Price’s characters and the author herself.

St. Simons Lighthouse holds many ghost stories. It’s one of the oldest working lighthouses in the nation. Neptune Park sits between the pier and the lighthouse. The park’s iconic sculpture of a mother whale and her baby reminds visitors of the Right Whales that visit this coast. If you’re lucky, you may spot one of the few remaining whales that use this area as their calving ground from December to March.

The World War II Home Front Museum , the island’s newest museum, is the only museum telling the story of German ships that prowled our Atlantic shoreline.

One great way to see the island is on the Lighthouse Trolley Tour, while the Dolphin Boat Tour is a wonderful way to see the watery side of St. Simons and some dolphins. Both are offered by Lighthouse Trolleys Land & Sea Tours .

The best lodging is King and Prince Resort , dating to pre-WWII. They have an award-winning restaurant, ECHO. There are many great restaurants here: Georgia Sea Grill, Gnat’s Landing, Southern Soul BBQ, and, for something different, Golden Isles Olive Oil.

Jekyll Island 

Jekyll Island is the sister that married money. Today, as a state park, many of the millionaires’ “cottages” are open to tour including homes owned by Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, Goodyear, Macy, Crane, J.P. Morgan, and more. There’re several tours that take you to see the mansions and other parts of the island. Relive the golden age at Jekyll Island Club Resort , where you’ll be pampered in Victorian elegance. If you want to keep playing the millionaire, dine in the Grand Dining Room. Golfers have a choice of four club courses.

Visit Mosaic Jekyll Island Museum for island history. Moving back to the 21st century, see the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

Jekyll Island Campground , on the north end of the island, has everything from primitive to full hookup. The campers’ store has bike rentals so you can use the 20 miles of paved bike trails.

This gives you a week’s worth of day trips, but you will definitely want to spend more time in some of these small-town charmers. Each is unique and equally fun to visit.

A vacation day trip from Jacksonville can mean driving south and cruising the beaches along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, going west to hike in a national forest or splash in the freshwater springs, visit historic landmarks, and so much more.

Here are 10 great day trips you can make easily from your base in Jacksonville.

Salt Springs, 82 miles

About 90 minutes south of Jacksonville, and west of the St. Johns River within the Ocala National Forest , lies Salt Springs . The clear, turquoise waters here and slight salinity make it a beautiful place to swim and see wildlife such as stingrays and crabs. Salt Springs has a wide swimming area, some of which is shallow enough for children to wade. Stay for a picnic and explore the easy two-mile hiking trail.

Daytona Beach, 89 miles

Daytona Beach is immediately renowned as a capital of car racing and family beach vacations, but the list of things to do here is long and varied. Spend the day surfing, boating, or fishing. Find a spot to relax along the city’s 23 miles of beaches and stroll the historic pier and boardwalk . Explore the museums and cultural centers , a historic lighthouse , or go shopping . See the Daytona International Speedway , home of the annual Daytona 500, and take a tour that includes the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America . Visit Jackie Robinson Ballpark , the local stadium and now shrine where the late Hall of Famer and civil rights pioneer integrated professional baseball.

Amelia Island, 33 miles

Thirteen miles long and four miles wide, Amelia Island is nonetheless packed with history, natural beauty, and Florida vacation experiences. Start with Fernandina Beach on the north end and visit Fort Clinch State Park , whose 1,400 acres include golden-sand beaches, a Civil War-era fort, and scenic oak hammocks. To the south, American Beach was a historic African-American shoreline established during segregation in the 1930s. A museum and a 40-acre historic district preserve that story.

Directly south of Amelia Island are Big Talbot Island State Park and its “boneyard beach” of bleached oak remnants, Little Talbot Island State Park , and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve .

Cross Creek, 82 miles

In the 1930s, the small community of Cross Creek was made famous by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Yearling . Today, the Rawlings home and farm, just south of Gainesville, are open to visitors as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park . Public tours of her home, preserved as she had kept it all those years ago, are available, and visitors can walk the grounds and see her car parked next to the house and the orange trees and magnolias like the ones she wrote about, as well as the barn, tenant house, and flourishing vegetable garden.

Osceola National Forest, 54 miles

Osceola National Forest covers 200,000 acres of wilderness between Jacksonville and Lake City. Ocean Pond is one of its most popular day-use spots, and for good reasons: the ample opportunities for fishing and hiking, the two-acre pond’s sandy beach, and the picnic area off its scenic shore.

Just outside the national forest is Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park , where reenactments of Florida’s largest Civil War battle take place every February.

De Leon Springs, 96 miles

A stack of pancakes, a slice of Florida history, and a dip in a cool, clear spring make for an incredible day trip, and all of these things are available at De Leon Springs State Park .

The Sugar Mill Restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch, is a century-old replica of the 1830s mill that once stood here. In the cooler months, restaurant patrons can relax next to a crackling fire while their food is prepared. It was my first time visiting Jacksonville, Florida in late April 2018, and, needless to say, I barely scratched the surface in those 3 nights. In this travel guide, we’re covering how you can spend a day trip in Jacksonville.

Did you know? Jacksonville is the largest city in continental United States.

With over 840 square miles of land, 22 miles of beaches and 10 different neighborhoods to explore, Jacksonville is definitely a place to visit.

Despite its 6,000 years worth of history dating back to the Timucuan Indians, Jacksonville is growing and flourishing as both a destination and a place to live, having the youngest population in Florida with a median age of 35.

In fact, it’s one of the 21 Super Cool US Cities ranked by Expedia’s Viewfinder Travel Blog in 2017.

If you only have a day to explore Jax, here’s a great itinerary which focuses on the city proper since The Beaches are at least 30 minutes away. This day trip guide covers some of the best things to do and restaurants in Jacksonville .

Jacksonville Day Trip Itinerary

Breakfast at maple street biscuit.

Start your day trip in Jacksonville with breakfast at Maple Street Biscuit Company in San Marco, which was started in 2012 by Scott Moore and Gus Evans.

As the name implies, they are famous for their flaky biscuits which you can get on its own or in one of their signature sandwiches.

Try the Five and Dime! It’s their most popular biscuit, and you won’t be disappointed!

Maple Street Biscuit is located in the historic neighborhood of San Marco where you’ll find local dining, trendy boutiques, and art galleries. You’ll also spot the San Marco fountain of lions that reflects the neighborhood’s association to Venice, Italy.

Downtown Walking Tour with Adlib Tours

From San Marco, head across St. Johns River to Downtown Jacksonville for Jacksonville Walking Tours by Adlib Tours.

Travelling Foodie Tip : Try to be in this area early so you have time to check out Downtown Riverwalk as well.

One of the best things to do in Jacksonville especially on a day trip, this 2-hour guided tour starts at 10AM, and you meet at the bottom of the escalators inside Jacksonville Landing.

On Thursdays, this is an Art and Architecture tour, which is what I got to experience. (Note: As of July 5, 2019, Jacksonville Landing has closed. Please contact AdLib Tours for the new meeting spot)

Our guide, Pam Zambetti, was such a delight. She’s a local artist herself and is very knowledgeable not just about the art and architecture, but the city and history as well.

Did you know? Jacksonville is named in honor of General Andrew Jackson, an American soldier and statesman who eventually became a President of the United States. You’ll find his statue outside Jacksonville Landing.

With Jacksonville Walking Tours, we explored Downtown’s top architectural buildings including Wells Fargo Center, which was the tallest building that time it was built in 1974, and the Bank of America Tower.

The most interesting thing for me was touring the underground tunnels that connected buildings.

And thru this tour only, you’ll come across a secret in the tunnels. In the Atlantic National Bank, you’ll get the opportunity to see a real historic bank vault with safety deposit boxes that withstood The Great Fire of 1901, the largest urban fire in the Southeast.

Back on ground, street art is abundant in the city. You’ll find artwork not just on walls, but also electrical boxes and pillars under the Jacksonville Skyway (which is free to use by the way!).

You’ll also get to check out the Jacksonville Public Library which houses the oldest map dating back 1520, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The tour ends around 11:50am at the 1.5-acre Hemming Park, Jacksonville’s first and oldest park, right across the museum and City Hall.

My Bar My Way Factory Tour at Sweet Pete’s Candy

At the northwest corner of Hemming Park, you’ll see Sweet Pete’s Candy, locally owned and operated by candy maker Pete Behringer.

After watching the Sweet Pete’s episode on CNBC’s The Profit with Marcus Lemonis, I was very excited to check out this store located in the historic 1903 Seminole Club.

Once inside Sweet Pete’s Candy, you’ll literally feel like a kid in a candy store… or the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory! This is definitely a must-visit attraction when visiting with kids.

The best way to experience Sweet Pete’s Candy is by doing the My Bar My Way Factory Tour, which runs at 12:30PM (and 2/3/4PM).

You get a 30-minute tour by a candy expert and also a customized chocolate bar where you get to choose the type of chocolate and three toppings (out of over sixteen to choose from). All that for just $5!

The My Bar My Way Factory Tour takes you through its 3-story candy store and factory while learning about the company’s history, viewing the live production facilities and going behind the scenes of their packaging room and caramel wrapping machine.

Lunch at Candy Apple Cafe (CLOSED)

By about 1PM of your Jax day trip, you’ve likely built up an appetite following the walking tour and candy tour. Luckily, you don’t have to go somewhere else for lunch because also located at Sweet Pete’s is The Candy Apple Cafe & Cocktails.

Locally owned and operated by mother-daughter duo Liz and Jennifer Earnest of the Cummer Cafe and the Chef’s Garden Catering & Events, this whimsical restaurant dishes up French-inspired Southern fare including locally caught Mayport shrimp crepe, candy apple cider bacon, and sauteed escargot on puff pastry.

Did you know? If you love brunch, they also serve Brunch All Day Long from omelettes and eggs benedict to Mayport shrimp & grits and country fried chicken and waffle!

Brewery Tour and Drinks at Intuition Ale Works

After lunch, it’s Beer O’ Clock! Head over to Intuition Ale Works at 3PM and check out their brewery and tap room

Did you know? Intuition is the first craft brewery in Florida to can its beers in February 2012. The name stems from the fact that founder Ben Davis, who started as a wine maker in Napa Valley, trused his intuition to return back home to Jacksonville to open a craft brewery.

If you’re still hungry, or just want something to nibble on while drinking, BLK SHP has a food counter and kitchen serving snacks like fried cheese curds and pork rind nachos to plates like the Intuition burger and Shrimp Po Boy.

Intuition Ale Works has a free 30-minute brewery tour to learn about the brand, their brewing process and any questions you have about beer! The tour happens every hour on the hour while the taproom is open.

Travelling Foodie Tip : Be sure to check out their rooftop patio as well which has beautiful panoramic views of the city.

One very interesting thing I learned is the concept of dry hopping. Typically, hops are added during the brewing process when the wort is boiled.

In dry hopping, you also add dry hops during the fermentation stage on top of the initial hopping to increase the intensity.

I had a beer flight to try their different beer offerings. Prices are very reasonable at $2-3 for 5oz Draft and $5-7 for 10-16oz Drafts.

I was thoroughly surprised how much I enjoyed their Easy On The Eyes. For someone who doesn’t like IPAs, this brew was definitely easy on me.

I also loved the All Night Diner (imperial oatmeal stout) and Daybreak (sour gose). If you want to try dry hopped beer, their ALTernative Medicine is an Imperial German Altbier that has been dry-hopped with saphir and southern cross hops.

Tour the Historic Five Points

Before dinner, head over to the Five Points historic district in The Riverside and Avondale neighborhoods.

Did you know? Five Points is named for the intersecting point of Park, Lomax and Margaret streets where you’ll find the iconic five-point flashing traffic light.

It’s quite interesting to drive thru the intersection, but be warned that it is very confusing and can be accident prone when it’s rush hour.

This historic area and entertainment village is known for being eclectic, bohemian, historic and hip with funky coffee shops, unique local boutiques, a historic theatre (Sun-Ray Cinema) dating back 1927, and surrounding parks.

Sometimes you just need a mini-vacay to keep things fresh. We get it! That’s why we’ve curated this ultimate guide to fun and unique day trips from  Jacksonville FL you can do to keep things adventurous during your week. Want to roam with the horses or take a dip in some crystal-clear springs North Florida has so much nature and wonder to explore you’ll never run out of fun experiences and destinations.

So pack light because these road tips and day trips from Jacksonville are all about some bite-sized adventure…

Cumberland Island

Take the ferry and head to Cumberland Island for a day of whimsy and wonder! This once-upon-a-time vacation island for the wealthy Carnegie family is now open to explore. Check out the ruins of a seaside mansion built in 1884 and burned down in 1950. Cumberland also has one of the only feral herds of horses on the Atlantic that remains untouched by the outside world. About 200 horses roam the lands, living off the rugged beachside terrain.

Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island  has so much to offer from shopping, beaches, Golden Isles visitor tours, acres of wilderness and so much more! Places we recommend include:

• Zachry’s Riverhouse – Nice porch seating with views of the river and offers burgers, wings, seafood and more!
• The Pantry  – Stop in the morning for some pastries, cinnamon buns or muffins! Also offers lunch options!
• Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum  – This museum takes you through the rich culture and natural history of Jekyll Island!

Talbot Island State Park

Talbot Island State Park includes seven parks and if you’re into bird watching photography, and exploring nature, this place is for you! You can go hiking on Blackrock Trail, go on kayak tours, adventure down to Boneyard Beach and so much more!

Osceola National Forest

Almost 200 acres of pure, natural Florida, Osceloa National Forest is rife for exploring and getting in touch with your inner Floridian. Dense forested woodlands and diverse ecological swamps are untouched by humans in this scenic park. This day trip is also coated with history! Check out the Olustee Battlefield Trail to experience what Civil War soldiers lived through.

If you’re lucky you can catch the annual  battle reenactment in February for a historic and entertaining look at the Civil War and its toll on Florida.

Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens

Find a mini oasis in this incredible day trip! Right around the corner from Devil’s Den you can find Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens. These botanical gardens used to be a quarry and now it has been transformed into a magical place. You’ll be able to explore waterfalls, koi ponds, wildlife, tons of flowers and so much more! Exploring these grounds could take a few hours, so be sure to bring a bottle of water and a picnic if you’d like!

Dogs are welcome, just be sure to let the owners know beforehand.

Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka

A spectacular hike in Florida, Ravine Gardens has many features that makes it unique and worth the day trip! The lush park comes to life in the spring when all the landscaping comes alive.  A guided-tour tram ride will takes visitors past 100,000 of azaleas planted. Hit Ravine Gardens at its peak coloring, which is February or March, during the annual Florida Azalea Festival. Additionally, the park has two picturesque suspension bridges and waterfalls for that perfect photo-op moment.

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park

This park has been around since the 1880’s and takes you on an adventure into another world outside the Florida palms and beaches and into a mini rainforest!

Silver Glen Springs

This spring pours out to Lake George, the largest of the St. Johns River Chain of Lakes, and you can get here by boat! Don’t worry, the boats stay out of the swimming area and you can also drive here to enter. Make sure you get a picture with the infamous palm that resides there!

Silver Springs

Paddle through crystal clear waters at this beautiful State Park! Experience natural Florida at it’s best with Silver Springs. From gorgeous scenery to incredible wildlife, there’s much to see and do. If you don’t feel like paddling upstream, catch a ride on the iconic glass bottom boats to see the springs like never before.

Pro-Tip: keep your eyes on the trees for an unusual sight in Florida – wild monkeys!

Float down a natural lazy river at this hidden gem! Kelly Park is a gorgeous natural spring that’s perfect for Summer fun! Enjoy the short river run, and flow out into a large pool of crystal clear water. The perfect solution to a hot Florida day, take a dip in Kelly Park’s gorgeous waters.

Ginnie Springs

If you find yourself melting away, Ginnie Springs will cool you down! This is about a two-hour drive from Jacksonville, but it is so worth the day trip! You can kayak, float down in an inner tube, paddleboard, and more!

Ichetucknee Springs State Park

This park is home to spring-fed rivers, lush canopies and cool swimming holes! The Blue Hole Spring is amazing to snorkel and explore, plus you may even see otters or beavers lurking around. There is so much to do at this wonderful State Park!

Juniper Springs Recreation Area

Constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Juniper Springs is a place where you can swim, picnic, adventure through trails, and more! With palms and oaks surrounding a beautiful spring, this one is a little less than a two-hour drive and so worth it for a day trip!

Looking for the perfect day trip or weekend getaway Flagler Beach is the perfect option! It’s close enough to home, but far enough away to feel like the perfect vacation. How would we spend the day First, we’d grab a cup of coffee from Sip and Surf Coffee or Yes Coffee Co. and then walk along the beautiful beach! We’d explore all there is to see (and take cute photos while we’re at it!) and then check out the Funky Pelican for some delicious bites!

Savannah, Georgia

Yes, Savannah is just about two hours away from Jacksonville! If you haven’t made a weekend out of this cute little southern town already, it’s time to change that. From trendy boutiques, ghost tours and historic sites, this place is one of our favorite spots to get away! We recommend:

• Savannah Bee Company Mead Tasting  – this is so fun and you get to try all kinds of mead you might not have on a regular basis!
• The Public Kitchen & Bar  – Outdoor patio seating is amazing!
• Tree House  – For those late night party-goers, check out the Tree House for your night on the town!

Wild Adventures

If you’re a thrill seeker and want something different that Universal or Disney World, head on over to Wild Adventures. This theme park offers all kinds of rides and even has a water park! We recommend the Boomerang or Aviator.

St. Augustine - Lightner Museum

This iconic building is a great addition to your day trip to St. Augustine! Heading to beach for Memorial Day weekend? Check water quality near Jacksonville

If your Memorial Day plans include some time at the beach, we've got you covered — and not just with sunscreen.

Going to the beach is no fun if it's covered with stinky seaweed or if toxic fumes from red tide permeate the air.

And swimming with enteric bacteria — think fecal pollution — is just plain gross.

We've gathered the latest test results and health advisories from the Florida Department of Health and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help you stay safe before you head out for the long weekend.

Is it safe to swim or fish near Jacksonville and in Duval County?

This map shows whether any red tide or blue-green algae have been reported.

Weekly data on  beach water quality  is from the Florida Department of Health. Red tide  and  algal bloom  data are from FWC.  Red tide  shows conditions from last seven days and  algal bloom  is from the last 90 days.

What is enteric bacteria and what are the symptoms if you come into contact with them.

Enterococci are enteric bacteria which normally inhabit the intestinal tract of people and animals. It's an indication of fecal pollution. It may come from stormwater runoff, pets, wildlife or human sewage. 

They can be ingested while swimming or enter the skin through a cut or sore.

Symptoms include upset stomach, diarrhea, eye irritation and skin rashes.

What are blue-green algae and what are symptoms if you inhale toxins?

Blue-green algae are types of bacteria called cyanobacteria. They can be blue, bright green, brown or red, and can have a strong odor similar to rotting plants, according to the Florida Department of Health. 

If people or animals splash in the water or if boats create wakes, the algae cells can be broken apart, and the cyanotoxins can be released into the air. The toxins mix with water droplets and spray, causing people and animals to potentially inhale the toxin.

Water from areas with blue-green algae can make animals and people sick. These toxins can't pass through your skin easily so swallowing large amounts of contaminated water is what causes illness.

For some people, exposure to blue-green algae can cause rashes, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. People who are very sensitive to smells can have respiratory irritation. Sometimes, high exposures of toxin can affect the liver and nervous system.

What is red tide and what are symptoms if you come into contact with it?

Karenia brevis is a naturally occurring, single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae called dinoflagellates.

Red tide can cause coughing and sneezing and can irritate your eyes, nose and throat. Reactions to red tide can be worse for people with asthma, emphysema, bronchitis or any chronic lung disease, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Swimming in or around red tide can cause skin irritation, rashes and burning and sore eyes.  If you come into contact with red tide, wash off with soap and water, especially if your skin is easily irritated. 

Red tide toxins also can accumulate in filter-feeders such as oysters and clams, which can lead to neurotoxic shellfish poisoning in people who consume contaminated shellfish.

Is there sargassum on the beach? Check latest conditions with these webcams

Sargassum is a type of large brown seaweed  — which actually is a type of algae — that floats in masses before it washes up on beaches. These large floating clumps, patches, rafts, or "blobs"  can stretch for miles across the ocean.

The rafts provide habitats for crab, shrimp, sea turtles and fish.

Tiny organisms that live in sargassum — like larvae of jellyfish — may  irritate ski n if you come into contact with it, according to the Florida Department of Health.

"Exposure to decomposing seaweed can result in difficulty breathing, headaches, nausea, and skin eruptions called 'swimmers’ dermatitis,'” according to the Centers for Disease Control.

As sargassum rots, it releases hydrogen sulfide, which can be irritating. Seek medical attention if you experience respiratory problems, the CDC said.

If you do touch or swim with sargassum, the CDC advised rinsing off with "copious amounts of fresh water."

Fisherman unexpectedly reels in 12-foot tiger shark while fishing in Atlantic Ocean

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WFOX/WJAX) – A fisherman in Florida caught what’s believed to be a 12-foot tiger shark off the coast of Jacksonville Beach.

Owen Prior and his friends went fishing last weekend near the Jacksonville Beach Pier about 400 yards out.

“One of my friends heard the reel going, and they were like, ‘Yo, Owen, you’re on,’” Prior recalled.

He knew the catch was heavy, but he didn’t realize what it was at first.

It took about 20 minutes to reel it in.

“Every step closer I took, she got bigger,” Prior said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission classifies tiger sharks as a prohibited species.

The FWC says anglers may catch and release prohibited shark species in state waters, but you’re not allowed to target and land prohibited species.

Prior said he doesn’t believe the shark was hurt by the way it was hooked, and his catch was released back into the ocean.

Prior has caught sharks in the past, and he said he didn’t target his catch last weekend.

“We weren’t targeting that shark, it just happened to eat the bait. It’s the same bait for every shark, you never know what it’s going to eat,” he said.

Prior and his friends took a photo with the shark.

“Technically, you’re not allowed to take a photo with it. I don’t necessarily regret it, however that experience and photo I’ll remember forever. That’s something I’ll tell my grandchildren one day; I definitely got caught up in the moment a little bit.”

Memorial Day road trip ahead. Here are the best and worst times to go in Florida, the Southeast

Memorial Day is rapidly approaching, which means millions will be hitting the roadways or skies for a quick weekend getaway.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This is a 4% increase over last year, with experts noting this comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers. 

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”  

When is Memorial Day 2024? When is Memorial Day weekend 2024?

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Which will be more congested for Memorial Day travel — roadways or airports?

According to AAA, road trips are expected to set a record with 38.4 million people projected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.

Renting a car for your road trip? Florida-based rental company  Hertz  says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand, with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24. 

But airports are also bracing for a large surge of travelers next weekend.

Is Memorial Day a busy airport day?

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11," AAA said in its press release.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly two million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.” 

When are the best and worst times to travel on Memorial Day?

For those planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, transportation data and insights provider INRIX offers the best times to get on the road.

Experts advise drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.  

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said.

Floridians beware: Other states are heading to Florida to vacation

Whether Florida residents plan on traveling or relaxing at home all weekend, they might want to be aware of the thousands of others joining them.

AAA compiled a list of the top domestic travel destinations for Memorial Day weekend, with three Florida cities making the list:

"This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed," AAA writes.

Florida women drive 500 miles from Jacksonville to Key West in toy cars to 'save animals'

Two 29-year-old Florida women who have been best friends since Kindergarten embarked on a 500-mile journey together, and not by way of automobiles or other traditional forms of transportation, but rather motorized toy cars.

Cassie Aran and Lauren Lee have been doing challenges and documenting them on social media for years, including traveling 45 miles in Heelys and kayaking in a cheap inflatable kayak to an island in Tampa Bay, but this time they wanted to do the "next big thing."

The women initially planned to break the Guinness World Record for the longest journey in a toy car by driving down the coast of Florida from Jacksonville to Key West.

"We wanted to do something bigger than anything we've ever done," Aran told USA TODAY. "We've been best friends since Kindergarten so we've done a lot of crazy stuff together, but we wanted to do something just a little bit bigger."

Their TikTok videos documenting their road trip have amassed hundreds of thousands of views.

Fundraiser organized for Best Friends Animal Society

The drive would also be for a good cause as the women hoped to "save animals along the way" by organizing a fundraiser for Best Friends Animal Society . As of Friday, over $16,000 has been donated, surpassing the women's goal of $10,000.

"We shout (the fundraiser) out in our videos and are trying to do our best to help the Best Friends Animal Society... the main thing they do is end kill shelters and start more humane options," Aran said. "It's a big passion of mine personally because I have a rescue dog."

In addition to the fundraiser, the women will also donate proceeds from their merchandise sales to the Best Friends Animal Society, Aran said.

Guinness World Record wanted to make Cassie Aran and Lauren Lee pay an 'exorbitant fee'

Although the initial plan was to break the Guinness World Record, the women learned halfway through their journey that they would have to pay $16,000 to have their names in the records book.

"We received an email from (Guinness World Record) essentially saying it's free to attempt any record, but since we were raising money, it technically put us into a different category," Lee said. "We weren't just individuals doing this anymore, it put us into a corporate category."

The women had to decide between paying an "exorbitant fee" or helping the animals, according to Lee.

"We decided the animals were obviously more important than the title," Lee said. "It's something we can always do again, we love doing stuff like this anyways."

How did the idea to drive toy cars 500 miles come about?

The idea behind driving toy cars 500 miles originated from the women driving Barbie Power Wheels when they were girls growing up in New Jersey, Lee said. Their childhood experiences encouraged them to try driving in toy cars again, so around two years ago, they drove 35 miles from Tampa to Clearwater, she added.

Their 35-mile trip in toy cars from Walmart evolved into them driving nearly $1,800 toy cars together for 58 days straight, according to Lee. The two will finish their adventure on Saturday morning when they cross the finish line in Key West, where the city's mayor and commissioner will be issuing them a certificate saying they completed their travels, she said.

Cassie Aran and Lauren Lee aren't biting 'each other's heads off'

Lee called the experience with Aran "phenomenal" despite people leaving comments wondering how haven't "bit each other's heads off."

"Through all the years we've learned what each other needs in those moments of being tired, hungry, fed up or whatever," Lee said. "After a long day, we know how to keep the spirits up... I feel like we've communicated very well through the whole thing."

Aran said sometimes it did get discouraging because some days their on the road for 16 hours trying to make it to their destination, and "just everything's going wrong" from the car breaking to the battery going dead.

"Sometimes it can get scary or discouraging but then the other one always tries to pick the other one up," Aran said.

'It's about the little steps'

People can take away from the women's whole experience that they "don't have to make massive strides every day," Lee said.

"It's about the little steps that you take in those days on the way to your big goal," she said. "No dream is too big to achieve... we just took it day by day, anything is possible."

Aran said their journey should encourage people to get out of their comfort zones.

"I would love people to look at this and just do something that makes them a little bit uncomfortable," she said. "That's the only way to grow."

How much does it cost DeSantis to travel from one place to another? Florida won't tell you

Why it matters: a new law is being used to prevent the public from seeing how tax dollars are spent for gov. ron desantis' travel..

Gov. Ron DeSantis regularly jets around the state.

Stops over the last month have included Coral Gables, Jacksonville and Cape Canaveral , all to sign bills passed by the Florida Legislature earlier this year.

His constituents may know DeSantis went to these three cities, but they won't know how much it cost them. The state says such financial records are exempt from public records disclosure, citing a 2023 law geared at concealing certain information to prevent the endangerment of the governor and other officials.

A total amount for how much is spent on the governor's travel is released every year by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but the agency recently denied a public records request from the USA TODAY NETWORK-Florida seeking a detailed breakdown.

Open government advocates and others argue the new law prevents the public from clearly knowing whether personal and political trips, which shouldn't be paid for with tax dollars, were kept separate from official travel.

"I don't understand this inconsistency.... He was at a public event, it doesn't make any sense to protect that," said Michael Barfield, director of public access initiatives for the Florida Center for Government Accountability, which has filed multiple public records lawsuits against the governor. "It's my understanding the legislation did not preclude the release of financial amounts."

He wasn't the only one given that impression.

State Rep. Anna Eskamani, an Orlando Democrat, asked a sponsor of the legislation ( SB 1616 ) about financial transparency on the House floor in early May 2023: "How do you strike the balance between ensuring that the public still knows how their money is being spent with travel?"

“None of the finances that are currently public records ... or the reports that are currently available are changing,” replied Rep. Jeff Holcomb, R-Spring Hill.

In a phone interview with a reporter a year later, Eskamani said the GOP supporters of the bill should now be working to get such information out to the public.

"Based on the constant response by the bill sponsor and by others who attempted to say that this bill was all about safety and security, the impression by those in support of the bill was that this information would still be made available," Eskamani said. "I never bought that reasoning or that excuse, but that was definitely what they were pitching to their colleagues."

On the road again: Florida governors' travels long a topic of interest

The travel of Florida's governors has been a topic of intrigue and controversy for decades . Attention on DeSantis' travel ramped up even more when he was barnstorming the nation in the months leading up to his unsuccessful presidential campaign, which formally began on May 24, 2023.

FDLE's report, released in August , showed that it spent more than $8 million protecting and transporting the governor during the 2022-23 fiscal year. It marked a multi-million dollar increase in spending over the previous year.

The law enforcement agency denied the USA TODAY Network-Florida's breakdown request in early May, about nine months after it was made.

The governor's office has not responded to requests for comment, but representatives of DeSantis have previously dismissed concerns about his travel practices.

"The state does not coordinate or plan political travel, nor does the taxpayer fund political travel," spokesperson Bryan Griffin said in an email last year.

Dana Kelly, an FDLE spokesperson, responded via email only that the annual report is "the public record of expenses."

The law took effect on May 11, 2023, the day DeSantis signed it .

“With the security situation, how you do patterns of movements, if you’re somebody that is targeted, which unfortunately I am, and I get a lot of threats, that could be something that could be helpful for people that may not want to do good things,” DeSantis said at the time.

And that's how the bill's GOP champions framed the exemption, which also concealed records about who visits the governor's mansion. The law applies not just to the governor but his immediate family, as well as the House speaker, Senate president and state Supreme Court chief justice.

"We are government in the sunshine," said state Sen. Jonathan Martin, a bill sponsor and Fort Myers Republican, on the Senate floor. "This allows us to continue to do that in these new and interesting times that we find ourselves, where seemingly innocent information can be conglomerated to reveal very personal aspects of your life."

And Holcomb said before the House vote, "unfortunately, this very simple bill that is truly about the safety and security of our most senior elected officials has become politicized," responding to a slew of criticism from lawmakers on the other side of the aisle.

Eskamani wasn't the only legislative Democrat who had doubts. All of them voted against the measure.

"If someone is running for president and they hold the governor's office, that travel should be transparent, and those finances and all of those things and whatever they do should be transparent," said Rep. Michele Rayner, D-St. Petersburg.

Holcomb and Martin didn't respond to requests for comments.

Transparency advocates call foul on latest records exemption

American Oversight, a government accountability watchdog that sued the governor's office for alleged public records violations a couple of months ago , said the law doesn’t apply to expenditures. In an emailed statement, the group pointed out that the Florida Constitution requires that any exemption “shall be no broader than necessary to accomplish the stated purpose of the law.” 

“That means that the exemption must be interpreted narrowly (in line with its stated purpose); otherwise, it would be unconstitutional because it would be broader than necessary to accomplish its purpose,” said Ron Fein, American Oversight’s chief counsel. “If a financial record does happen to contain security information covered by the exemption, it can be redacted.” 

The legislation listed out multiple examples of exempt records; Fein says financial records don’t fall under any of them. And he says such records don’t fall under the law’s purpose to prevent records disclosures that “could endanger the protected person.”

The law shouldn’t have been passed in the first place, Fein added: “Not only is it overbroad and probably unconstitutional under the state’s Constitution, it flies in the face of Florida’s commitment to government transparency."

Bobby Block, executive director of Florida's First Amendment Foundation, had warned lawmakers last year about how all-encompassing the exemption could be. Reading the bill, he noticed how it didn't explicitly exclude financial records.

And, as a result, if the state chooses to consider those as exempt security records, it takes legal challenge to contest it. "The time to fight that is before it passes from the legislature," Block said in a recent phone call. "Once it passes its law, and it's a lot harder to push back."

The Washington Post is pushing back. It filed a lawsuit last year in Leon County Circuit Civil court, saying the records exemption law was unconstitutional.

It's a high-profile case that became even more noteworthy after the litigation uncovered that,  as reported by The Post , top DeSantis aides prevented records on taxpayer-funded travel from being released – and retaliated against those who disagreed.

The Florida Center for Government Accountability's Barfield said Florida's public records system, once nationally esteemed for its transparency, was "broken at the state level."

"The bottleneck is in the governor's office," he said, pointing to a News 6 story showing how DeSantis' team reviews public records requests to state agencies.

"They know that our resources are thin to challenge the denial of access to public records, whether it's an excessive fee or an excessive, inordinate delay. And they're taking full advantage of that."

Memorial Day road trip? Some of the best RV, glamping destinations are close to Brevard

An estimated 43.8 million travelers are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day weekend traveling 50 miles or more, according to AAA.

Lucky for Space Coast residents, two of the top luxury RV and glamping destinations in the country are within easy driving distance from Brevard County.

USA Today 10Best released its list of the best luxury RV resorts in the country and the top spot went to a central Florida destination. Also published was the 10 best glamping spots in the US, where a central Florida location also got a mention.

Best luxury RV resort in the US is right here in central Florida

Camp Margaritaville RV Resort & Cabana Cabins in Auburndale earned the top spot on the USA Today 10Best list for luxury RV resorts.

“Their oversized sites have plenty of room to accommodate all RV sizes and include full hookups, free Wi-Fi and cable access, a charcoal grill, and a picnic table,” according to USA Today 10Best. “Each week, the resort features live music and entertainment with delicious food trucks and fun activities for all family members.”

Glamping, also known as glamorous camping, has gained popularity in recent years. It allows campers to experience the beauty of the outdoors with some of the comforts of home, like indoor plumbing and air conditioning.

USA Today 10Best awarded Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo the No. 5 spot. Located south of Kissimmee, this dude ranch gives guests the option of glamping in luxury tents complete with bathrooms, beds and air conditioning. The property offers a live rodeo, horseback riding and other camping activities.
