The 9 Best Day Trips From Faro, Portugal

Faro is a great jumping-off point for exploring the Algarve and other parts of Portugal, and the Spanish border is less than an hour’s drive away. Whether you’re interested in grand architecture and world-class food, traditional village life, deserted beaches, or fascinating history, it’s all easily accessible as a day trip from this small city.

Ria Formosa: Check Out the Birdlife

The Ria Formosa lagoon, a series of lagoons and sandy barrier islands between the coast and Atlantic ocean, is only a few miles east of Faro. A vital nesting ground for many migratory birds, it’s common to see flamingos, cranes, egrets, and several other species in the area. Seafood such as octopus, crabs, and oysters is also abundant in the area and supplies restaurants throughout the country.

You can explore the mainland section of the Ria Formosa on your own via a long boardwalk, or take an excursion with one of several companies to get out to the islands. Water-based trips include kayaking and catamaran options, along with guided bicycle trips, get you much closer to most the bird life.

Getting There: Boat trips generally leave from Faro harbor, and can be booked through travel agents, your hotel, or direct with the operator. Independent travelers should drive or take the train to Olhão (once an hour, journey time of 10 minutes.) The park starts on the eastern edge of town.

Travel Tip: Take a look around the center of Olhão before heading back to Faro—the attractive white flat-roofed buildings look like they belong in northern Africa, not Europe.

Ilha da Barreta / Ilha Deserta

Just south of Faro, but accessible only by ferry or private boat, Ilha da Barreta is the place to go for unspoiled beaches and no crowds. Accurately called Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island) by the locals, the island has no full-time residents, and most tourists stick to more easily-accessible beaches.

The beach on Ilha Deserta runs for five miles, with a boardwalk running along part of it from the ferry pier, but you won’t need to go far to find an empty patch of sand.

There's a restaurant on the eastern edge of the island, beside the pier. It serves drinks, snacks, and meals, and rents sun loungers and umbrellas.

Getting There: A ferry runs from Faro during summer months, costing around 10 euros for a return ticket. The last service leaves at 5:30 pm, and it’ll be a costly speedboat ride back to the mainland if you miss it.

Travel Tip: Pack a picnic lunch if you’re on a budget--the island’s restaurant has no competition, which is reflected in the price of its meals.

Loule: Perfect for Souvenir Shopping

The Algarve is more than the beaches on the coast . If you’d like to take in some history and get a taste of Portuguese life in the Algarve interior, take a trip to Loule.

The town has a Moorish castle and a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets full of craft workshops, but the biggest highlight for many visitors is the historic covered market in the center of town. On Saturday mornings, the regular market expands to include a farmers market as well, and the whole area comes alive with locals and tourists alike.

The covered market is the perfect place to pick up local handicrafts such as handbags, shoes, and metalwork, as well as regional food and drink specialties.

Getting There: Loule is about ten miles from Faro, and easily accessible by car or bus. The journey takes 40 minutes and costs around 3€, but services are limited at weekends. Organized day tours are also readily available.

Travel Tip: The covered market is closed on Sundays, and most government-run sites are closed on Mondays.

Praia da Quinta do Lago: Sand and Flamingos

Praia da Quinta do Lago is a stretch of golden sand backed by delicate wetlands, making for an interesting alternative to other beaches in the area. A 1,000-foot wooden footbridge crosses the marshes, connecting the beach to the mainland, with a restaurant and bar at the beach end for when you’re feeling peckish.

Flamingos and other bird life are abundant in the wetlands, and lifeguards are on duty during summer for those braving the chilly waters. Whether you’re there to swim, sunbathe, or birdwatch, you’ll likely have plenty of space to yourself—the beach rarely gets busy.

Getting There: It takes around half an hour to drive from Faro to the start of the footbridge, or you can walk the two miles along the sand from Faro’s main beach instead.

Travel Tip: Only consider the walk from Praia de Faro on cooler days—it’s a long way, with very little shade! 

Tavira lies on the Gilão river, around twenty miles east of Faro. It’s regularly called “the prettiest town in the Algarve,” all beautiful churches, old whitewashed buildings with terracotta roofs, cobbled streets, and small fishing boats bobbing in the current.

Other than a Roman bridge and ruined castle on a hill above town, Tavira isn’t really a place for ticking off major tourist attractions. Instead, it’s ideal for experiencing a relaxed slice of small-town Algarve life that’s largely missing from the resort areas.

Enjoy a leisurely meal at one of the excellent restaurants along the river, enjoy a drink at a shaded bar in one of the town’s many plazas, and keep snapping photos of picturesque buildings until you’ve filled up your memory card.

Getting There: Tavira is a 35-minute drive from Faro, along the A22 motorway. The train takes around the same length of time.

Travel Tip: Check the train schedule before your return trip, as service frequency varies depending on the time of day.

The Western Algarve: History and Rugged Beauty

Lagos is a popular beach destination on the western Algarve coast, with plenty of restaurants, beach activities, and an active nightlife. There’s more to the region than that, however, with plenty for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

Silves, twenty miles northeast of Lagos, was once the capital of the region. A ticket for Silves Castle costs under three euros, a bargain to visit this impressive fortress. Be sure to check out the cathedral as well—this former mosque is now a national monument.

Head to the rugged and isolated Cabo de Sao Vicente, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, which was once believed to be the end of the world. Nearby Sagres is a good spot to grab a meal and visit the 15th-century fort atop a nearby headland.

Getting There: Trains and buses run regularly between Faro and Lagos, taking under two hours, but you’re better off renting a car if you plan to visit several different parts of the western Algarve in a day.

Travel Tip: Pack warm clothing if you’re visiting Cabo de Sao Vicente, even on hot days. The wind off the Atlantic makes the headland noticeably colder than even a mile or two inland.

Seville: Tapas and Moorish Architecture

The capital of Spain’s Andalusia region, Seville makes for an easy and rewarding day trip from Faro. Controlled by the Moors for 700 years, their legacy is easily seen throughout the city.

There’s far more to see than you can cover in a single day, but must-do highlights include visits to the largest Gothic cathedral in the world (entry: €9 in 2019) and the Alcázar royal palace (entry: €11.50 in 2019,) currently famous for being a Game of Thrones shooting location. They’re both in the gorgeous barrio (neighborhood) of Santa Cruz , which is an attraction in its own right.

Seville is the home of flamenco dancing, so try to take in a show while you’re there, and be sure to spare a leisurely hour for watching the world go by as you enjoy a drink and tapas at a local bar.

Getting There: Seville lies around 125 miles east of Faro, and it takes around two hours to drive there . The bus takes three hours and costs about fifty euros round trip. It’s worth checking the price of guided day tours as well, as they often don’t cost much more than the bus.

Travel Tip: Seville can get extremely hot in summer, with temperatures regularly well over 100 °F. Try to visit in shoulder season, or be prepared to limit the amount of time you spend outside.

Lisbon: Crumbling Beauty and Great Food

You don't have to choose between the beach or the city for your vacation. Lisbon can be easily visited on a day trip, allowing you to base your beach holiday in the Algarve, but still enjoy the Portuguese capital.

You could easily spend a week exploring Lisbon, but fortunately, the old town is relatively compact and easy to explore on foot for day trippers. Be sure to wander through the narrow streets of Alfama, explore the grand, crumbling architecture of the Baixa/Chiado shopping district, and enjoy a drink beside the river at any one of the numerous bars and restaurants.

When you’re getting hungry, the Time Out Market hosts outposts of some of best restaurants in the city in its sprawling food hall, or you could simply follow your nose and drop into a family-run restaurant for a menu do dia (meal of the day).

Getting There: Lisbon is three hours by car or high-speed train from Faro . Day excursions by minivan are also available, with hotel pick-up and drop-off, that visit many of the city’s major sites.

Travel Tip: The hills in Lisbon are steep, and it often seems like everywhere you want to go is uphill. Wear comfortable shoes!

Gibraltar: A Slice of Britain on the Rock

Strategically located on the tip of Spain at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, the British territory of Gibraltar makes for a fascinating, albeit long, day trip from Faro. Enjoy the views of the famous Rock, and check out the Barbary apes, the last remaining wild monkeys in Europe. Don’t get too close, though, especially if you’ve got food or drink – they’ll be only too happy to take it from you!

Gibraltar’s tax-free status means things like cigarettes and alcohol are cheaper there than in Spain. If you want to buy some, you’ll need to change some money, since Gibraltar uses pound sterling as its currency.

Getting There: You can visit Gibraltar by guided tour from Faro, or drive the nearly four hours to the Spanish border (La Linea de la Concepcion) and walk the few minutes into Gibraltar instead. There are no direct public transport links, with buses going via Seville and taking most of the day to get there.

Travel Tip: As you’ll be leaving and re-entering Spain, don’t forget your passport!

Situated just 10 minutes drive from Faro Airport, the Algarve’s regional airport, the city of Faro  city of Faro is the perfect location for an Algarve holiday. Although it’s the closest city to the airport, Faro city is considerably less touristy than many of the other towns on the Algarve. Most visitors fly into Faro Airport and then immediately go to one of the coastal towns in the Central Algarve like Albufeira, Carvoreiro, or Ferragudo.

Pego do Inferno

Pego do Inferno is a waterfall located roughly 35 km from Faro, near the picturesque town of Tavira. This isn’t one of the Algarve’s most signposted attractions. In fact, it’s not signposted at all. You’ll need to follow a Google Map to find it – a journey that involves walking up a river!

It’s definitely worth it, though! Pego do Inferno itself is beautiful, the water is cool, and swimming next to a freshwater waterfall is incredibly relaxing.

The remoteness of this attraction not only means there are few other tourists there, but it means that the journey to get there is almost as exciting as the waterfall itself.

Ilha Deserta

Ilha da Barreta, also known as Ilha Deserta, is a little island off the coast near Faro . Although the island has some beautiful, natural beaches, it is only accessible by boat. Its relative inaccessibility means that the beaches of Ilha da Barretta attract considerably fewer tourists than the mainland beaches near Faro city. This is one of the best day trips from Faro.

Getting to the boat is easy, particularly if you plan in advance. Ferries go to and from the island several times per day and the journey to the island, which goes through the beautiful Ria Formosa, is as worthwhile as the visit to the island itself.

There is a restaurant on the island, Restaurante Estaminé, however, there are no shops so be sure to bring shade, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is a natural collection of small islands and lagoons off the coast of Faro city. It is a haven for all kinds of wildlife, particularly birds such as red-crested pochard, cattle egrets, and purple herons. The area is also rich in seafood such as oysters, octopus, cuttlefish, crab, and cockles, all of which are supplied to seafood restaurants throughout Portugal.

Boat tours leave from the marina in Faro and take you through the Ria Formosa and onto many of the islands. It’s a fantastic way to spend a relaxing day near Faro.

The Spanish town of Seville is situated just 2 hours from Faro city (note: there is a one hour time difference). Seville’s proximity to Faro means it’s suitable for a day trip, although it does require a little planning.

As well as the time difference, it’s important to note that many shops close for the afternoon in Seville for the siesta. This means that you should ideally get to Seville as soon as possible, to ensure that you have plenty of time to explore the city while everything is open.

To get to Seville, there are two options. The first, and probably the easiest option, is to take the bus . While there is no train service between Faro and Seville, buses go between the two cities several times per day.

The other option is by car. This option is less attractive than traveling by bus, as most car hire companies charge extra if you want to take your car across a border. While it is possible to take the bus across the border and then hire a car, this process is quite time-consuming and it’s much more convenient just to take the bus.

Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, is a popular destination on most travelers’ itineraries. And, good news: it’s possible to get to and from Lisbon within a day by train .

The journey from Faro to Lisbon by train takes roughly 3 hours, and the first train will get you into Lisbon for 10:00. The last train leaves Lisbon at 18:31, giving you more than 8 hours to explore the city.

This is just enough time to see many of the main attractions including Praça do Comércio, Castelo de São Jorge, Alfama, Torre de Belém, Mosteiro Jeronimos, and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

It’ll be a flying visit but, as Lisbon is quite a compact city, it’s possible to see most of the main attractions and get a feel for it in a day.

Once the capital of the Algarve, Silves is a small town in the Central Algarve that’s popular with history lovers. It’s most famous for the Moorish castle that sits atop the hill behind the town, although the winding streets of the Old Town and the Cathedral are both worthwhile attractions as well.

Although Silves gets its fair share of visitors, mainly in the form of coach tours visiting the castle on a day trip, the town isn’t as touristy as some of the other towns on the Central Algarve. It’s a town that’s still lived in by many Portuguese people, and as such there are plenty of good restaurants most notably Marisqueira Rui and Churrasqueira Valdemar.

Situated just 45 minutes drive from Faro city, the picturesque town of Tavira is a must-see for anyone visiting Faro and the Eastern Algarve. While Faro is a small city, most of the Algarve is made up of small towns like Tavira. A day trip or half-day trip to Tavira will give you a good idea of what one of those towns feels like. Tavira’s is one of the most beautiful of all the towns on the Algarve, and as well as getting a feel for the Algarve way of life, you’ll be able to snap some great holiday photos as well.

Situated on the South-Western tip of Portugal, Sagres is the surfing capital of the Algarve. Here, you will find countless surf schools, surf rental shops, and hostels catering to surfers and all things surfing.

If you’re not interested in taking a surf lesson, you can also visit Sagres Point. This is where Henry the Navigator’s 15 th Century school was based, and it’s here that some of Portugal’s greatest explorers honed their craft for the journey ahead.

As well as history and surfing, the Western Algarve’s rugged coastline is a popular destination for walking. You’ll find a number of short walks near Sagres, including the Rota Vicentina which starts (or ends) at Cabo de São Vicente nearby.

Évora, a city around 2-and-a-half hours from Faro city, is the capital city of the Alentejo. The Alentejo is Portugal’s largest region, and it’s even more laid-back and rural than the Algarve. Évora, however, is quite modern in comparison, helped by having a university in the town.

Évora’s key attractions include the former Roman Temple of Évora, the Cathedral of Évora, and the Capela dos Ossos – a chapel made of human bones. A few miles outside of the town, there’s also the Almendres Cromlech standing stones. These standing stones date back as far as 6,000 bc, making them even older than Stonehenge in England.

Ria Formosa looks like the islands we see at Loktak lake in Manipur. I wonder if these are a natural phenomenon that happens in particular circumstances. I am sure this combination of land and water would attract a lot of birds. This kind of ensures that man is not too close and nature is all by itself – undisturbed.

I’ve been to a few of your recommended day trips and can endorse them all. But what really struck me was that if you can get from Faro to Lisbon in 3 hours, you can do the same in reverse and perhaps spend a night in Faro. I’m planning a trip to Lisbon this year so perhaps that would work for me!

Little do I know there is more to Portugal than Lisbon. I can remember visiting Silves but I didn’t spend much time there. It’s sad that I missed the seashells at Ilha de Barreta, they’ll be good props for Instagram pictures. And the blue water at Ria Formosa. I wonder what it feels like to surf at Satres. Portugal and Spain are littered with tiny places which are so stunning that each deserves at least a day to itself. Ideally, I would spend the longest time just travelling along the coast all over Europe. The best place to be.

These are some great suggestions for day trips from Faro. I went here about 10years ago and I loved it there and I have always wanted to go back. After reading you post and looking at your photos it has made me want to pack my bags and head there now. I have always wanted to go to Seville it is high up on my bucket list.

As the capital of southern Portugal, Faro has transportation links to the main towns in the region and is therefore easy to go on a day trip to a number of destinations. You can head east to the well-preserved historic city of Tavira or to the islands of the fishing port of Olhão, or go west to the upscale resort of Vilamoura or the market town of Loulé. Inland there’s the ancient capital of Algarve (Silves), and you can also explore the different beaches of the lively city of Albufeira.

Day Trip from Faro to Tavira

40 minutes by train or 1 hour by bus

One of the most charming and historic towns in Algarve can be reached by train or bus from Faro. Leaving early in the morning and returning in the evening allows you to explore its picturesque old town and experience one of its beaches . Ideally you’d go by car or stay overnight, but when planned well, a day trip by public transportation is also possible. The bus departs five times a day on weekdays and four times on weekends (number 67 of the Vamus company, whose final destination is Vila Real de Santo António), and they stop in Tavira in one hour. The train is faster, taking less than 40 minutes, and there are about a dozen departures per day. Both the train and bus stations in Tavira are within walking distance of the tourist attractions.

Day Trip from Faro to Olhão

10 minutes by train or 20 minutes by bus

Olhão is a fishing town right next to Faro. It’s known for having one of the region’s biggest fish markets , but there are no major monuments or tourist attractions. However, it’s very much worth a day trip, as there are ferries to a couple of islands with some wonderful beaches . Buses number 63 and 67 of the Vamus company link it to Faro in just 20 minutes, but the train is even faster, taking just 10 minutes and departing about a dozen times throughout the day.

Day Trip from Faro to Vilamoura

45 minutes by bus

Vilamoura is one of Portugal’s most popular resorts , and while most people stay overnight, those staying in Faro might also want to stop by for its casino and beach . By car you’re there in 30 minutes, or you can take bus number 9 of the Vamus company. This bus has Albufeira as its final destination, but stops in Vilamoura in about 45 minutes.

Day Trip from Faro to Loulé

40 minutes by bus

Unlike most other major towns in Algarve, Loulé is not on the coast. While it doesn’t have beaches, it’s still a popular tourist destination, for its famous market and its castle , which is one of the very few in southern Portugal that wasn’t completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. There are trains between Faro and Loulé, which take just over 15 minutes, but the station in Loulé is quite far from the center of town. You should take the bus instead -- number 59 of the Vamus company takes you there in about 40 minutes.

Day Trip from Faro to Silves

1 hour and 10 minutes by train

Located inland, Silves doesn’t have any beaches, but many people leave the coast and pass by this ancient town for its castle . It’s one of Algarve’s main monuments , and the town is a peaceful (even rather sleepy) place, with cobblestone streets, a Gothic cathedral , and a small museum explaining the history of the region . It flourished during the Moorish occupation, when the castle was built, but just like all of Algarve, it was largely destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Everything can be seen in just half a day, and can be reached by train from Faro. There are about 10 daily departures, and you can check the times at the cp.pt website. The train takes about one hour and 10 minutes, but the station is quite far from the center. You need to walk for about a half hour up a busy road, or be lucky to find a taxi by the station for the 10-minute ride to town. Your best option is therefore to drive -- it takes about 45 minutes, heading northeast on highway A22.

Day Trip from Faro to Albufeira

35 minutes by train or 90 minutes by bus

Thanks to its number of beautiful beaches , Albufeira is one of Portugal’s top tourist destinations , with many people staying for several days. However, if you’re in Faro and want to experience another popular city in Algarve, you can go on a day trip. It has a long stretch of sand right in the center, as well as quieter beaches to the east and west. There are ten buses on weekdays and six on weekends – number 9 of the Vamus company, taking 90 minutes. If you just want to explore the Old Town and spend a couple of hours at the beach, take the bus, but if you want to go to the beaches nearby you need to go by car (it’s 40 minutes, heading west on highway A22). There are also trains, taking just over a half hour, but the train station in Albufeira is quite far from the center.

1. Benagil Cave and Marinha Beach

One of the best day trips from Fargo, just an hour’s drive away, is a trip to spend the day exploring Benagil Cave and Marinha Beach.

Known as the “Eye” Cave because of the cave’s unique formation, it’s located just a five to 10 minute walk from Benagil Beach.

Once guided into the cave, spend your time taking photos, swimming in the shore that washes up into the cave, or just simply relaxing and enjoying the view. 

Afterwards, make your way to Marinha Beach where you’ll have an hour to soak in the panoramic views from above.

This beach is often described as one of Portugal’s most stunning beaches, so don’t forget your camera and selfie stick!

2. ria formos island hopping tour.

Explore Ria Formosa’s three barrier islands on a fun-filled day trip of island hopping!

Desert Island is your first stop, where you can enjoy the peaceful wildlife on this inhabited island. Visitors can join in on a walking tour, visit the island’s lighthouse, or just soak up the sun at the beach.

Located on the southwestern tip of Portugal, Cabo de São Vicente is a must-visit destination!

Located around an hour and a half drive from Faro, this beautiful and rugged coastline is home to towering cliffs, crashing waves, and picturesque views of the most southern area of Portugal!

One of the most popular activities is hiking along the cliffs and exploring the landscape just off the Algarve coast.

You can also visit the lighthouse, which is popular among visitors who take advantage of the spectacular views of the surrounding area.

You may want to make this a day trip, as it takes an hour and a half to two hours from Faro. Hiring a car or taking the city bus are both reliable ways to reach the beautiful Cabo de São Vicente.

How to get to Faro and how to get around

Faro is located on the southern coast of Portugal and in the heart of the Algarve. It is the capital of the region and it is equipped with the main international airport in southern Portugal. Faro is the perfect starting point for any Algarve trip, as it is easy to find a cheap flight to Faro .

Faro is centrally located in the Algarve. It is a 1,5-hour drive west to get to the westernmost point of the Algarve, where you’ll find the beautiful beaches and rocky coast of Sagres. And with a 1-hour drive to the east you to get to the Spanish border. This makes Faro the perfect destination to base yourself while exploring the region. There are plenty of things to do near Faro within a 30-minutes drive and you can even choose to visit some bucket list destinations in Andalusia in Spain on a day trip.

A rental car is the easiest way to get around on a day trip. Because of its international airport, Faro is one of the best places in the south to rent a car in the Algarve . If that is not in your budget, Faro is well connected by public transport as well. The Faro train station has direct connections to many other destinations in the Algarve and the Faro bus can bring you to most nearby attractions. If you go on a day trip from Faro with a long bus drive like to Seville in Spain, make sure to look into guided excursions as well, because they are often the same price or even cheaper.

#1 The Ludo Trail in Ria Formosa Natural Park (15 minutes)

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is located between the coastal towns of Faro and Tavira in Portugal’s Algarve, which is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. The west-coastal Algarve is home to orange cliff formations and charming bays with sandy beaches, while the east of Faro features a maze of waterways, islands, and peninsulas. This area is the beautiful Ria Formosa nature reserve.

You’ll find one of the most beautiful and frequented areas of the Ria Formosa just west of Faro, near the international airport and Praia da Faro. The Ludo Trail and the São Lourenço Trail are two popular hiking routes that pass through here. It’s odd to us that they are two distinct hiking routes rather than one continuous trail. The two are in perfect alignment, and they make a beautiful round trip together.

The trails wind throughout the lagoon, with the Ludo Trail concentrating on saltwater swamps and the São Lourenço Trail focusing more on wooded areas and golf courses. The most memorable part of the trip for us was the stretch along the Ludo trails. You may see a lot of water birds while trekking through this marshy and wetland environment. We observed several flamingos in different areas of this Ria Formosa section on each of our two visits. The trail passes a salt production region with salt flats, pink lakes, and huge white salt mountains. It’s a very beautiful and special place in the nature park where you see fewer people than at the swamps.

#2 Ilha da Barreta and Ilha de Culatra (15-60 minutes)

Though Faro is located on the Algarve coast, it doesn’t have its own beach. The nearest beach – the Praia da Faro – is on the Peninsula do Ancão, near the Ludo Trail in Ria Formosa. It takes 15 minutes to drive here from the Old Town of Faro, or 30 minutes by ferry. But if you’re looking for an even better beach option near Faro, take the boat to Ilha da Barreta or Ilha de Culatra!

The Ria Formosa lagoon south and east of Faro has many islands with beaches and visiting them is one of the fun things to do in Faro. There is a ferry connection to the island Ilha da Barreta from the Old Town of Faro. This island is also called Ilha Deserta because it is uninhabited and it’s mainly the beautiful beach that draws visitors. It is only a 15-minutes boat ride with the shuttle ferry, or you could take the slower ferry which takes about 45 minutes.

The island Ilha de Culatra is the only island near Faro with a small village. The expansive beach is the main reason to visit the island. A boardwalk of about one kilometer runs through the dunes along the beach. It’s a lovely stroll with views of the beautiful island and the beach. The island has a longer hiking trail as well, the 5.6-kilometer Ilha da Culatra Trail.

You can take the ferry directly from Faro Old Town to Ilha da Barreta, but the ferry to Ilha da Barreta departs from the nearby village Olhao. You could take a water taxi to any of these beach destinations, but they are a lot more expensive than the fairly cheap ferries. From Olhao, there are also boat tours to Culatra island exploring both the Ria Formosa nature and visiting the island and its beaches.

#3 A guided boat tour to Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Algarve to visit. You can explore it on foot on the Ludo Trail we already mentioned or enjoy the sandy beaches in the area. But this impressive lagoon is best explored from the water and there are many great tours from Faro to enjoy the Ria Formosa.

• Explore the Ria Formosa with a catamaran tour along the islands
• Book a sailing trip and sail for two hours on a private sailboat through the lagoon
• Go for an adventurous tour and make a kayak trip around the nature reserve
• Choose a birding tour on the segway to learn about the special birds in this area and to spot flamingos
• Learn more about the Ria Formosa nature during a guided bike tour
• Go for a boat trip to spot dolphins and maybe even whales and orcas

#4 The Pink Palace of Estoi (15 minutes)

The historic village of Estoi is located just north of Faro. As one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve, it is well worth a visit when staying in Faro. Estoi has a direct bus connection with Faro and is only a 15-minute drive away.

Estoi is a picturesque village, known for its historic center with its medieval streets. In the heart of the Estoi Old Town is the historic and monumental Palácio do Visconde de Estoi . The beautiful palace is truelly remarkable, if only for its unique pink color. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century as a summer retreat for a wealthy Portuguese family. The family opted for a special combination of Neo-Baroque and the extravagant Rococo style, creating a palace that is unique in the Algarve and all of Portugal. Especially impressive are the extensive gardens and the panels with white-blue azulejos. The story goes that the Portuguese king was so impressed with the palace that he decided to give the owner a noble title.

You can’t visit the palace from inside, unless you are staying at the pousada it is nowadays. A pousada is a state-owned hotel in a unique and monumental building of historical significane, like this pink palace near Faro. You can only enjoy the extravagant rococo interior as a hotel guest, but the gardens are open to all visitors. So we highly recommend you to visit both the Old Town of Estoi and the lush gardens of its beautiful pink palace.

#5 The azulejos of the São Lourenço de Matos (15 minutes)

Portugal is famous for its white-blue azulejos tiles and close to Faro is one of the best azulejos buildings in southern Portugal. The Igreja de São Lourenço de Matos church is located just west of Faro, a short 15-minute drive from the Old Town.

The São Lourenço de Matos doesn’t look very special from the outside, though it is actually one of the most beautiful churches in the Algarve. If you wouldn’t know what’s inside, you would probably not make a stop to visit it. The white church is built on a hilltop in an otherwise insignificant village.

This apparently simple church is not that plain and normal on the inside. The seventeenth-century church is almost completely covered in azulejos, the blue-and-white tiles Portugal is famous for. The panels are dedicated to the life of Saint Laurentius – Sao Lawrence in Portuguese – the patron saint of this church. The Portuguese cover about every inch of the church, from walls to ceiling. The alter is one of the few parts of the church not covered in azulejos, but it isn’t modest or plain either. It is an extravagant golden artwork that will immedialely draw your attention when entering the church.

As few travelers know about this unique church in the Algarve, you usually get to enjoy this splender without any other visitors. The entrance costs a few euros. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take pictures.

#6 Tavira (30 minutes)

One of our favorite day trips from Faro is the castle town Tavira. This picturesque town is located between Faro and the Spanish border, so right in the middle of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. You can explore the old streets of Tavira and enjoy the beautiful beaches and nature in the area in one day, making this a great excursion from Faro.

The Old Town of Tavira is located on the west bank of the Rio Gilão that runs through the town. When strolling the old streets, you’ll pass historic monuments, charming squares and ancient excavations. Tavira dates back to Roman times and – even further back – the time of the Phoenicians from the present Middle East. You can still find the ancient traces of this history in the Old Town. The Ruínas Fenícias are located on an insignificant street, not far from the castle. The ruins date from the eighth century BC and will one day be turned into a museum, along with other Tavira ruins from Roman and Moorish times.

One of its most-visited sights is the castle, built high up on the hill. Or castle ruins actually. The oldest part of the castle that has been preserved dates from the eleventh century. Like almost all buildings in Portugal, the castle was badly damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. It fell into disrepair during the following decades but is now open for visitors. The old walls have been restored and give an idea of the size of the old castle. You can visit the castle for free and climb the castle walls for a beautiful view of the city.

As Tavira is located in the heart of the Ria Formosa, its islands, beaches and nature might be the most beautiful attraction of Tavira. Just in front of the coast is the island of Tavira – Ilha da Tavira – which is 11 kilometers long and has beautiful beaches. In high season, you can take the ferry from the Tavira Old Town. The rest of the year you can take the ferry from the harbor at the edge of town. The beach closest to the ferry at Tavira island is Praia de Tavira, one of the most popular beaches in the area.

There is one way to reach the island without using the ferry and it is one of the best ways to visit the Tavira island. The Barril Beach Trail is a short 1,5-kilometer walk from the parking lot and over the pedestrian bridge to the beach. You pass a beautiful part of the saltwater marshes and other landscapes, finishing at the sand dunes and a beautiful stretch of beach. Don’t miss the Cemitério das âncoras, the cemetery of anchors, which sits dramatically along the coastline here. It is a reminder of the fishing village that once lay here.

#7 Falésia Beach Trail (40 minutes)

The Falésia Beach Trail is one of the hidden gems of the Algarve. Only a few people know about this trail and it is hard to find any good information about it online. We discovered this 4-kilometer hike on Google Maps and it turned out to be one of our favorite hikes in the Algarve . It brings you to one of the best beaches of the area, Praia da Falésia, and leads you along one of the most beautiful stretches of the rocky Algarve coast.

As the Falésia Beach Trail runs along the coast along Praia da Falésia, it’s not really possible to get lost during this hike. It might be hard to find the exact starting and ending point though, so might want to check the hiking map before you start the walk. You walk from the starting point towards the coastal village of Vilamoura, while having the beach of Falésia on your right the whole time. At various places you can also descend from the rocks to the beach, so be sure to bring your swimsuit to take a dip in the sea.

The rocky coast of the Algarve is stunning, but it is mostly famous for its orange cliffs more the west than this trail. This Falésia Beach Trail is located in the area between those orange cliffs in the west and the Ria Formosa mudflat region in the east of the Algarve, so it shows you a different landscape than in other areas of the Algarve. You can see white and orange rock formations in beautiful shapes. It’s like some kind of beautiful moonscape. This trail is therefore definitely one that you do not want to miss on your Algarve trip.

#8 Carvoeiro and the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (50 minutes)

Carvoeiro is home to some of the most beautiful rocky coast of the Algarve and is a popular beach destination in the south of Portugal. It is only a 50-minute drive away from Faro, so you can easily visit this beach town and enjoy one of the hikes in the area on a day trip.

The village of Carvoeiro is tiny and in our opinion not the most beautiful town in the Algarve – we prefer the picturesque and nearby village of Ferragudo much more. But Carvoeiro has the perfect location to explore the rocky coast and enjoy some beach time. The Trail of Headlands ends not far from Carvoeiro and the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail starts nearby as well. But Carvoeiro’s best attraction is the Carvoeiro Boardwalk. This mini walking path of only 600 meters is not about the wooden ‘boardwalks’ that run along the coast here, but about the spectacular vistas along the way. The wooden boardwalk leads along the most impressive cliffs of the Algarve. To get the best view of that coast, there are two places with stairs leading down the cliffs.

The second attraction of Carvoeiro is its secluded Praia de Carvoeiro beach, surrounded by rocky cliffs and restaurants. There are other great beaches close by as well like Praia do Paraisa and Praia de Vale dos Currais. Carvoeiro is also a great starting point for an excursion to the famous Benagil Caves, which can only be reached by water. A  boat trip  or  canoe excursion  is therefore the only way to see the caves, unless you are an extremely good swimmer and dare to swim from Praia de Benagil to the caves.

#9 Lagos (65 minutes)

Our favorite location in the Algarve is Lagos, which is our next recommendation for a great day trip from Faro. It was here that Portugal’s illustrious voyages of discovery began, launching the Golden Age of Portugal. The old town of Lagos, where you may wander through a maze of charming streets, reflects this rich history.

As Lagos is one of the oldest cities in the Algarve, it is full of historical monuments, old churches and the streets are paved with cobblestones. The Old Town is it most beautiful part of Lagos and one of the best places to visit in Lagos. Wandering the old streets should definitely be on your Lagos to-do list. A visit to the old town isn’t really about a specific monument or a well-known tourist attraction though. We just loved strolling down lively streets, admiring the beautiful street art and enjoying the picturesque architecture.

Lagos has a number of beaches within walking distance of the city center or a short drive away. The Praia da Batata is right in front of the city walls. Walk to Praia dos Estudantes, passing by a tunnel carved out of rock. The high bridge at this Praia dos Estudiantes beach is one of the most beautiful things to see in Lagos.

The famous icon of the Algarve is the Ponte da Piedade near Lagos. You simply can’t visit Lagos without seeing these rocks south of the city. This is a beautiful rock formation with golden yellow rocks that create lovely arches and pointed summits in an appealing blue sea. You may look down from the viewpoint, but going down the stairs gives you the best view of the Ponte da Piedade.  One of the best hikes at Lagos is walking along the rocky coast from the village of Luz to the Ponte da Piedade and then on to the old town of Lagos.

Seville is one of the best places to visit in Andalusia and it is only a 2-hour drive from Faro in Portugal. We can highly recommend you to cross the Spanish border and visit this bucket list destination in Spain. If you don’t have a rental car and want to travel by bus to Seville, a oneway trip will take about 3 hours. Bus tickets are usually quite expensive, so look into guided excursions as well, because they are often the same price or even cheaper.

Seville is a succession of alleys, city walls, flamenco theatres, arches, churches, squares, monuments, palaces and more churches. Where the sights of a city often concentrate around a cathedral, central square or castle, the splendor of Seville seems to never stop. The city has one of the largest historical centers in the world. From the Visigoths to the Romans to the Islamic Moors to the Christian monarchs, its long history is reflected in what you find here today. Especially the Islamic Moors have enriched Seville into the monumental city it still is today. The architecture of the Moors from North Africa was unprecedentedly refined, developed and large-scale.

One of the famous highlights of Seville is Real Alcázar de Sevilla, the royal palace with its lush gardens and stunning Moorish architecture. Right next to it is the Catedral de Santa María de la Sede. It is one of the largest churches in the world, as only St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London are bigger. The cathedral was once built as a mosque and the well-known Giralda Tower will probably remind you of an Islamic minaret.

Other Seville attractions you don’t want to miss on your day trip are the 160 meters wide Plaza de España with its stunning architecture and mosaics, the lively Jewish Quarter and the modern architecture of the Metropol Parasol with splendid views from the top. Make sure to start your day excursion as early as possible, because Seville can keep you entertained for many hours – or days.

Faro: How to Spend a Day in Faro, Portugal

We think Faro is the perfect introduction to the Algarve and maybe even Portugal. Although it doesn’t quite have hidden gem status, Faro is the often skipped over capital city of the Algarve. The airport is located on the outskirts and because of this Faro is often quickly left behind by tourists heading to the more picturesque hotspots of the Algarve region. Faro keeps a distinctly low-key and traditional Portuguese feel. The old town is wonderful to explore and grab a coffee in and for the culturalists there’s some great smaller museums, traditional architecture, and some unique history and extras. With the beaches and Ria Formosa lagoon on its doorstep it’s perfect for a longer weekend too. This Faro guide will be a useful reference to explore the city or if you’re nearby and fancy a day trip!   

How to get to Faro?

It’s possible to both get to Faro and explore it without a car. It has an airport, train station and frequent buses to all major towns and cities in the Algarve and beyond. That said, there’s a few things to bear in mind when considering your transport options. The bus and train station are located centrally, but the airport is about 10 minutes away from the city centre. So you will require a bus or taxi to get into the city itself. If you’re coming expecting a beach then that too requires a small trip to get to as well.

How to get around Faro for a Day Trip?

Faro is a smaller city and perfectly walkable. If you want to explore a little further, the beach, the Ria Formosa or some small local hikes. You might need to take a bus or taxi if you don’t have your own vehicle. A new arrival in 2019 was a selection of competing electronic scooters (Bolt, Voi). They’re easy to use and affordable but they can be uncomfortable on some of the cobbled streets. They are a very fun way of quickly exploring the city though.

This will be the first of our ‘1 Day Guides’, a series where each post will be a guide on visiting a town or city for a day trip.  These guides will be ideal for those on holiday or visiting nearby who just want to dip their toes into exploring the region in short day trips. Although suggested to explore in one day, each guide will feature extra places to explore should you wish to stay longer or travel further.

Faro’s idyllic city center is lined with palm trees and edges on to a delightful marina and our guide to Faro starts here. It’s a short walk directly east from both the bus and train station. If you’re here early enough, you’ll see local fisherman loading up their boats for the day, or clam pickers returning. A short walk around the marina will lead you to a jetty that leads out into the Ria Formosa (one of our favourite places to sit and watch the sunset).

Once you’ve taken the sights and sounds of the marina and Ria Formosa we suggest a relaxed walk into the old town. You’ll need to head through the Arco da Vila gateway and through the historic city walls. Keep an eye (or an ear) out for storks and stork nests, you’ll be able to hear their distinctive clacking. They make precarious nests on the many rooftops, chimneys and spires of the old city. It’s against the law to move or disturb a nest in Portugal and with the storks mating for life these nests almost become features of the architecture themselves.

City Walls and Cathedral

Once inside the city walls you’ll soon find the main orange tree lined courtyard and cathedral. The cathedral itself is a rather mismatched building taking in a variety of architectural styles. Due in part to its storied history of being sacked by foreign troops and rocked by natural disasters. A small entry fee (€2.50) gives you access to the cathedral, its courtyard and its bell tower. The interior of the cathedral is equally mixed up with many notable features like it’s grand 18 th Century organ decorated with Chinoiserie motifs. Within the courtyard is a small ossuary or bone chapel that’s unfortunately overshadowed by the ossuary at Igreja de Carmo, but still an interesting focal point. The bell tower is where the cathedral really shines as a cultural attraction though, giving superb views of the nearby lagoon and its inlets, the marina and historic rooftops of Faro.

Museum Municipal de Faro

Culturalists may want to stop at the  Museum Municipal de Faro , or also known as Museu Arqueológico. It’s within the old city and a very short walk from the cathedral. It’s housed within a former monastery and the main two-story building and courtyard garden date from 1540. The museum covers in detail the archaeological history of Faro. One of the standout artifacts being the Roman mosaic floor of the god Neptune dug up by accident nearby. As well as the early Roman and Moorish history, it usually houses an art exhibition or two on the upper levels.

Coffee or Lunch?

After a busy morning exploring the marina and old city it’s probably about time for a coffee or a lunch break. For this you can head to Rua. Dom Francisco Gomes and many of it’s side streets. It’s a pedestrianised area with an array of cafes, restaurants and shops. There’s plenty of options for alfresco and watching the tourists and shoppers go by. After, you may want to have a look around the shops. You’ll find shops selling local Portuguese wares, touristy shops and even some of the larger fashion chains. If it’s your first time in a touristy area of Portugal then ‘ O Mundo Fantástico da Sardinha ’ will jump out at you. It’s certainly a cultural oddity and gets very busy in the summer If the novelty of a tin of sardines with your birth year on it doesn’t sound appealing then perhaps it’s best to skip it.

Igreja De Carmo

After meandering through many of the side streets we think it’s best to head towards Igreja do Carmo. It’s perhaps the most popular and most photogenic of Faro’s churches. It’s located in a decorated square of its own (Largo de Carmo). Built between 1713 and 1719 it’s classically Portuguese coloured and is a fine example of Baroque architecture. Inside you’ll find a matching gold-leaf laden interior. Its most famous feature is the Capela dos Ossos or “bone chapel”.

Capela dos Ossos

The Capela dos Ossos was added in 1816 when the nearby cemetery was dug up and the inhabitants placed in the chapel. It is entirely made of the skeletons of those 1300 monks. It is one of several notable bone chapels in Portugal, it’s eerie but not as spooky as it sounds. You’ll need to visit on a weekday to see it (the chapel is open Monday-Friday 10.30am-12.30pm and 2-5pm). If you’re visiting the area on a Sunday morning, you’ll also be able to visit a traditional farmers market in the same square.

For the afternoon you really have two or three options depending on the time of year of your visit. No trip to Faro would be complete without visiting the Ria Formosa, aptly named one of Portugal’s Seven Natural Wonders. It’s a large coastal lagoon made up of inlets and barrier islands that stretch for 60km along the coast. Afternoon (2-3 hours) and sunset (90 minute) boat trips can take you out into the lagoon for some wildlife spotting. You can organise all of these at the at the marina and you don’t need to leave the city centre. During the warmer months a late afternoon on Praia de Faro can also be recommended. Those less inclined towards the outdoors could visit another of Faro’s great museums (Municipal Museum) or perhaps an afternoon shopping if you decided not to stop earlier.

As we mentioned at the very start of this guide, one of our favourite places to watch the sunset in the Algarve is on the pier behind the marina. It can get pretty busy with a range of locals, students and tourists, mingling, drinking and watching the sunset but it’s a great experience. For something a little more fancy and with service there’s several bars around the marina with terraces facing the lagoon, or for something very classy both of the bigger hotels in the center have public rooftop bars ( Hotel Faro and Hotel Eva ). Castelo is located in the old town and looks out over the historic walls for another fantastic sunset view of the lagoon so there’s plenty of options. 

With the Ria Formosa and ocean nearby it’s almost a given that you should try some local seafood. For us there are two stand out styles to try in Faro. A traditional cataplana or a local tapas style (petisco) restaurant. A cataplana, is a rich seafood stew served in a traditional copper bowl of two halves that it’s cooked in. The petisco restaurants are our personal favourites and serve typically local food but in tapas style, the food is served on small plates as it’s cooked and you share a few dishes between people.

Our Top Picks and Favourite Restaurants:

Portas de Sao Pedro . Our favourite dish here has to be the octopus, served with roasted garlic and sweet potato mash.

Petisqueira 3 em Pipa . The fried squid is divine, so too is the octopus, served with bacon, lime and new potatoes.

Bistro 31 . Try the local chauriço that’s served flaming, the fresh local prawns with garlic or any of the cheeses.

How to plan a day trip to faro + itinerary.

If you are planning a day trip to Faro, whether it is on your way to explore the rest of the Algarve or a day trip from Albufeira or any other nearby towns, there are a lot of great things to fill your day with.

From exploring the old town to the bone chapel, and hiking to see flamingos, there are a lot of things to do in Faro , so planning is key.

With one day in Faro, you can get a good insight into what the beautiful Algarve city has to offer. I love the laid-back pace in the Algarve capital and find it highly underrated.

In this Faro itinerary, I’ll let you in on the best way to spend your time when visiting Faro in a day.

How to get to Faro

Faro is the Algarve region’s capital city and home to the only airport in the region. This makes Faro easily reached from all over Europe and the proximity to Lisbon and Seville makes travel from outside of Europe easy too.

If you land at any other airport, you can easily rent a car to get to Faro. This way you can include your one day in Faro in a longer Algarve road trip , which is the absolute best way to see the region.

Best time to visit Faro in one day

Faro is a great city to visit all year round. In the summer, Faro is vibrant, the beaches are packed, and you will enjoy the energetic yet laid-back vibe of the city. Winter in Faro , is quieter, there are bigger chances of rain, and temperatures are generally lower.

That said, sunny days with 20 degrees Celsius can absolutely occur. The shoulder seasons have milder weather and together with winter, it is the best time to go hiking and explore Ria Formosa Natural Park on foot.

I can guarantee you that no matter what time of the year you go on a day trip to Faro, you will enjoy it. Just remember the umbrella if you go in the winter and spring months.

Where to stay in Faro

If you have 1 day in Faro as a layover and need to spend the night, don’t worry. There are multiple excellent places to stay in Faro . In fact, Faro is considered one of the best places to stay in Algarve for couples , solo travelers, and families alike looking for a more relaxing experience.

That also makes this a great base if you want to uncover the Algarve by going on day trips from Faro instead of checking into new hotels every night.

Things to do on a day trip to Faro itinerary

Get the chills at the bone chapel.

Start the day by visiting the most bone-chilling place in Porto, the Bone Chapel. Situated in the courtyard of Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Carmo, you find one of the multiple bone chapels in Portugal.

It is decorated with over 1200 human bones of Carmelite Monks that were extracted from the graves in 1816. They are a memory of the monks’ service and are meant to remind us that life is only temporary.

There is a 2 Euro fee to visit the chapel.

The Carmo Church is also lovely to see. It was started built in 1719 but was mostly damaged by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, so the entire Baroque façade and belltowers were rebuilt after that.

Visit Faro Cathedral

A less macabre church to visit is Faro Cathedral. A fascinating structure where parts date back to the 13th century. The original church was converted into a mosque, then again turned into a church.

Of the most prominent older remains, the clock tower stands out. Make sure you climb it to take in the sweeping views of Faro Old Town.

One of my favorite features about the cathedral are the impressive azulejos inside. So if you wonder if it is worth going inside or not, the answer is yes.

Walk the old town

While you are in the old town, take some time walking around the enchanting narrow streets checking out cobblestoned squares, and the unique Portuguese architecture.

Before leaving the Largo da Sé (cathedral square), make sure you check out the City Hall.

Among the top attractions, you find the 19th-century city gate, Arco da Vila, the Municipal Museum of Faro, and the Palacete Belmaro from 1912.

It is a true joy to walk around and it is close to the marina if you want to enjoy the salty scent of the ocean or take a selfie with the I Love Faro sign.

Lunch in the old town

Grab a quick lunch in the old town to fuel up for the rest of the day. There are plenty of places to eat. If the weather allows it, look for a table outdoors so you can enjoy the bypasses and soak in the Faro Old Town vibes.

I particularly like sitting on a square as there is so much happening around and people walking past in all directions.

Hike the Ludo Trail

The best and easiest way to see birds and even flamingos in the saltpans of Ria Formosa Natural Park in Faro is to walk the Ludo Trail. It is an easy and flat walk of about 7 kilometer and takes about 2 hours to complete. The loop trail is mostly on a gravel road and popular among cyclists and hikers alike.

There is not much shade on the trail, so you need to cover your head and splat on enough sunscreen on a hot day. I also recommend bringing a bit more water than you think you will need even though you’ll get to refreshments after finishing the walk.

Go on a boat trip

If it is too hot to hike the Ludo trail, another alternative is to go on a boat tour from Faro . There are many boat tours to choose from, but a tour of the barrier islands of Ria Formosa Natural Park is a great place to start.

The unique swamp landscape is home to numerous unique bird species like vading birds and flamingos where you can go on a lagoon boat tour .

These landscapes are protected by 5 barrier islands and on a boat trip to Ria Formosa you can visit some of these islands where you will be met by sweeping beaches and untouched nature. This boat tour is great for visiting the barrier islands.

If you can time it with a sunset boat trip you will not be disappointed. There is no prettier time of the day to go than when the pink sky reflects in the saltwater lagoons. You might also be lucky and see dolphins along the boat trip, so get out your camera!

Go for a sunset stroll along the beach

A stroll along Faro Beach is a great way to round off a wonderful day. In the summer months, you might want to go for a dip too if you went for the walk in the natural reserve.

If you manage to time it for sunset, you’re up for exquisite magnificence!

You might be tired of walking, then you’ll be delighted that there is a whole heap of lovely beach bars where you can have a drink while you take in the salty breeze from the ocean.

Dinner along the waterfront

There are many bars and restaurants along the waterfront where you can have a nice dinner before ending your Faro one day itinerary.

If you prefer, head into the city center where you have an even larger selection of restaurants, including multiple vegan options. Vegan Box is a personal favorite.

As you can tell, there are a lot of wonderful attractions and experiences to be had on a day trip to Faro. I spent way too long overlooking this city as I’m more of a nature kinda gal, but I’m so glad I finally gave it a chance because there is so much to Faro’s friendly atmosphere.

Lagos is approximately 55 miles (90 kilometers) from Faro. It takes around 1 hour to drive, 1.5 hours by train and 2 hours by bus.

Faro to Lagos by Train : To take the train from Faro to Lagos, you’ll board at Bom Joao station in Faro, heading towards Vila Real de Santo Antonio, and disembark at Lagos station.

There’s a direct connection that typically costs between €11 to €18 each way. The Faro train station is a 10-minute walk from the city center, and the Lagos is 12 minutes from the city center. You can buy tickets online or at the station.

Seville is approximately 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Faro. It takes about 2 hours minutes to drive, and 3+ hours by bus. Currently, you’re not able to take a train from Faro to Seville.

Bus from Faro to Seville: There are a couple different bus services that operate routes from Faro to Seville. I traveled between these areas using Flixbus since it offers the cheapest price and few stops in between.

Day Trip to Albufeira

Albufeira, a premier resort town in the Central Algarve, is a mere 40-minute drive from Faro.

Known for its beautiful, golden beaches and lively nightlife, in Albufeira you can explore all the hidden corners of the enchanting Old Town, bask in the sun at the famous Praia dos Pescadores, or enjoy a thrilling boat ride to nearby sea caves.

How to get from Faro to Albufeira

Albufeira is approximately 30 miles (45 kilometers) from Faro. It takes 40 minutes to drive, 1-1.5 hours by train with bus connection and 45 minutes by bus. The bus is the best public transport option for getting from Faro to Albufeira.

Train: Taking the train from Faro to Albufeira requires a connecting bus or taxi as the nearest station is in Ferreiras, 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) from Albufeira city center.

If you like to hike, a Carvoeiro day trip should definitely be on your Portugal bucket list so you can explore one of the most iconic trails in Portugal, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Starts at Centeanes Beach, near Carvoeiro, and finish at Marinha Beach, winding past Algar Seco along the way. This moderately challenging hike is well-marked and about 3.4 miles (5.7 kilometers) each way.

Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave is a newly popular day trip from Faro. Located along the stunning Algarve coast, this mesmerizing sea cave is a natural wonder that was pretty unknown until a photo of it went viral on Instagram.

Known for its natural skylight and the spacious golden beach inside the cave itself, it’s a pretty surreal spot. In fact, the only way to reach Benagil Cave is by swimming, kayaking, or boating to the openings. Getting to admire the sunlight filtering through the cave opening makes it worth putting up with the high-season crowds.

Approximate distance: 1 hour | 37 miles (60 kilometers)

BENAGIL CAVE TOUR

A kayak tour is by far the best way to see Benagil Cave and its sandy inner beach. I went on a boat tour and don’t recommend that since we basically popped in and out, spending less than 5 minutes there.

Ria Formosa

If you’re in Faro, you absolutely have to check out Ria Formosa, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal! This stunning natural reserve has tons of secluded islands and wildlife to explore.

If you’re a birdwatcher, you’re in for a treat. Ria Formosa is a nesting ground for migratory birds like flamingos, cranes, and egrets.

Up for a little adventure? Hike the Ludo Trail and keep an eye out for wildlife in the saltwater swamps. You can also book a day tour to the nearby islands, go kayaking, or take a catamaran trip to get up close and personal with the diverse wildlife in this amazing area.

RIA FORMOSA BOAT TOUR

There’s plenty to do here, from visiting the historical Old Town and exploring the Portimão Museum to trying local specialties like grilled sardines or polvo a lageriero at a waterfront restaurant.

Portimao’s historic center is also home to the Igreja Matriz, a 15th-century church that combines Gothic and Manueline architectural styles. A short distance away is the Fort of Santa Catarina, a historical fortification offering panoramic views of Portimão and the Atlantic Ocean.

For steadfast adventurers, check out the water sports at Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve’s most famous beaches.

Sagres is an exciting day trip from Faro, especially for anyone looking to surf some of the best waves in the world. (Or simply watch other people surf them!) Not only is Sagres one of the best beach towns in Portugal, it’s one of the top spots for surfing in Algarve.

While I’m not a surfer myself, my friend Whitney spent a few months learning to surf in Portugal and was kind enough to share everything she learned! If you’re looking for the best waves, Praia do Tonel is one of the most highly regarded beaches, sheltered by large cliffs and complete with a beach bar. You can also explore the westernmost point of mainland Europe at Cabo São Vicente, historically considered the end of the world. You also won’t want to miss the impressive Fortaleza de Sagres , perched on a rugged headland south of Praia da Mareta, originally built to defend against pirate attacks from North Africa.

Like I mentioned before, there are epic surf towns in Portugal! This European gem is known as a surfing mecca thanks to its consistent surfing in Peniche, Ericeira, Nazare, and more! Plus, there are a diverse array of wave types, and a sunny year-round climate, with destination suited for all skill levels.

Ilha Deserta (Barreta ISLAND)

Just south of Faro, but accessible only by ferry or private boat, Ilha da Barreta is the place to go for unspoiled beaches and no crowds. Called Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island) by the locals, the island has no full-time residents, and most tourists stick to the more easily accessible beaches.

The beach on Ilha Deserta runs for five miles, with a boardwalk running along part of it from the ferry pier, but you won’t need to go far to find an empty patch of sand.

There’s also an eco-friendly cafe, Restaurante Estaminé , on the eastern edge of the island, beside the pier. It serves drinks, snacks, and meals, and rents sun loungers and umbrellas.

Approximate distance: The marina where you catch the ferry is about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from the city center.

How to get to Barreta Island

• Trip Length: The ferry journey takes approximately 45 minutes, offering stunning views of the Ria Formosa Natural Park along the way.
• Hours of Operation: In the summer, services start as early as 8:00 AM and run until 8:00 PM, with a ferry departing every two hours, but make sure to check the ferry schedules as they vary by season.
• Cost: A round-trip ticket costs about €10 for adults.

Vila Nova de Milfontes

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a must-visit day trip destination from Faro. Nestled along the stunning Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, it offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and coastal charm’s a great opportunity to check out Portugal’s western coast with its own version of dramatic beauty and seaside bliss.

A stop by the bustling fish market is a fun, albeit smelly, thing to do in Olhao. Many of the top restaurants in the Algarve head here to purchase the evening’s dinner. Say hello to tonight’s special!

Olhão is also the gateway to the stunning Ria Formosa Natural Park. You could easily combine the two locations into a single day trip, enjoying a seafood lunch before exploring mesmerizing lagoons on a boat tour.

Costa Vicentina

Costa Vicentina is one of the farther day trip destinations from Faro, but for avid hikers, this rugged, unspoiled coastline is well worth the trip! This region is famous for the Rota Vicentina , a network of walking routes that wind through the most picturesque parts of Alentejo and Algarve.

This is where you’ll find the Fishermen’s Trail, a famous long-distance trail that can take up to 14 days to complete in full! But don’t worry, there are plenty of smaller day routes that intersect this path, but can be completed in a few short hours.

Getting Around THE ALGARVE

Navigating the Algarve can be an easy experience or it can be difficult. It all depends on where you want to go! Generally, I recommend taking the train to reach other towns and popular tourist destinations.

If you’re determined to reach more secluded beaches, hiking trails, or surfing spots, your best bet is to rent a car from Faro Airport, book private transport, or even an organized day tour.

TRAIN: Day trips from Faro by train offer a convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way to explore the hidden gems of Portugal and beyond. The next section outlines all the details you need to know!

DAY TOURS FROM FARO: There are tons of great Faro day tours that make getting around the Algarve a total breeze. Skip to this section to read more.

BUS: Buses are indeed a viable option for taking day trips from Faro, with numerous bus lines available that service both local and intercity routes. It depends where you’re going, but generally, I don’t recommend using a bus to get around the Algarve.

While buses are generally punctual and can take you to most of the popular Algarve tourist destinations, they’re better suited for travel within a city or town. Trains are going to be the faster option with stations conveniently located near tourist hotspots.

DRIVING: Renting a car is best for exploring the Algarve’s off-the-beaten-path locations or simply venturing at your own pace. The roads are generally well-maintained and easy to navigate.

Typical car rental costs vary, but on average, you can anticipate spending around €25-€40 per day, which is a small price to pay for the ultimate freedom and flexibility it offers. You’ll just want to make sure you’re staying somewhere that has parking available.

Day Trips from Faro by Train: Algarve Train Line

If you’re wondering Is there a train along the Algarve , then you’re in luck, because yes, there is a train that runs through Portugal’s Algarve coast!

Train Line: The Algarve train system primarily consists of a single line, the Linha do Algarve , which spans the entire region from Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo António in the east. While the route is not extensive, it conveniently connects most of the main towns in the region. Plus, the coastal views are simply phenomenal.

Popular Stops: The most popular stops along the Algarve line include Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira-Ferreiras, and Tavira. These towns are well-loved for their stunning beaches, picturesque old towns, and vibrant nightlife.

Journey Length: The duration of an average journey depends on the specific start and end points. However, a trip from one end of the line to the other, from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours without significant delays.

Price: Ticket prices are very affordable, making train travel a budget-friendly option. A single journey ticket can range from €4 to €6 depending on distance. However, prices may vary slightly depending on the time of year and seat availability. Please check the local train operator’s website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Day Tours from Faro, Portugal

For those seeking to explore beyond the city’s boundaries, Faro offers a multitude of organized day tours that promise a memorable experience. These tours, expertly curated and guided, provide an in-depth view of the region’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and historical landmarks.

• Ria Formosa Boat Tour : Experience one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders on a catamaran, stopping at a few of the islands. This tour starts at the Faro Docks.
• Dolphin Watching Boat Tour : I saw so many dolphins up close on this boat tour. Definitely got my money’s worth. This tour leaves from Faro Harbor.

CAN YOU DO A Faro to Gibraltar Day Trip ?

Gibraltar is an intriguing location to visit where you can explore the famous Rock, observe the Barbary apes, Europe’s last wild monkeys, and take advantage of Gibraltar’s tax-free status. Plus, experience a unique blend of Spanish and British influences, stroll along the main street with its charming atmosphere, and savor tapas, open cafes, and cozy British pubs.

Unfortunately, you can’t logistically go on a day trip from Faro to Gibraltar. With a distance of 240 miles (385 kilometers), it takes almost 4 hours to reach Gibraltar from Faro by car. Currently, the fastest train route between these two locations takes almost 7 hours.

If you want to head from Faro to Gibraltar, you should be ready to plan to spend at least one day in Gibraltar.

Can you do a day trip from Faro to Lisbon?

While it is technically possible to complete a day trip from Faro to Lisbon, it is not something I recommend. The journey from Faro to Lisbon by train usually spans 3 to 4 hours one way, meaning that a substantial portion of your day will be spent in transit.

Given that Lisbon, Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city, is full of enchanting attractions, from the historic Belem Tower to the vibrant neighborhoods of Alfama and Bairro Alto, it is a destination that truly deserves more than a rushed day visit.

A more relaxed stay in Lisbon allows plenty of time to appreciate its rich cultural heritage, indulge in delicious Portuguese cuisine, explore charming streets filled with traditional fado music, and soak in panoramic views from its many stunning viewpoints.

When in Faro, you’re not just limited to exploring Portugal . I totally understand the desire to squeeze in all you can. There’s nothing I love more than checking another country off my travel bucket list! Let’s find out whether Spain and Morocco day trips are possible from Faro.

Day Trips from Spain to Morocco

You can also embark on a number of day trips from Faro to Spain. Train services from Faro to Spain operate daily, taking you directly to beautiful cities like Seville and Cordoba .

Typically, train journeys from Faro to Spanish cities, such as Seville and Cadiz, take around 2 to 3 hours. Plus, since Portugal and Spain are both part of the Schengen area, you won’t have to worry about border control.

Driving from Faro to Spain is also possible with plenty of destinations within a 2-3 hour journey. While actual driving time may vary, the biggest advantage is that you can explore small villages and off-the-beaten track locations more easily by car. Just be sure to plan your route in advance as some roads may require tolls.

Day Trips from Faro to Morocco

Day trips from Faro to Morocco are technically possible, but due to the travel time, I definitely don’t recommend trying one. There is only one ferry, and it runs from Algeciras, Spain, to Tangier, Morocco . However, you must first get to Algeciras from Faro, which can take about 4-5 hours by car. The ferry journey itself lasts around 1-2 hours. The ferries from Algeciras to Tangier run multiple times per day.

There’s also a ferry that runs from Gibraltar to Tangier, but the schedule is highly irregular and it doesn’t run as often.

If you want to spend a few days in North Africa, you can fly from Faro to Morocco. Several airlines operate flights between Faro and different cities in Morocco, with Marrakech and Casablanca being the most popular destinations. The flight duration typically ranges from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the specific route and airline.

EXPLORING MOROCCO

This delightful town straddles the Gilão river, and boasts over thirty churches, a castle, and cobbled streets lined with traditional tiled houses. There is no prettier town in the Algarve than Tavira, and being located in the much quieter eastern Algarve, it still retains its authentic Portuguese atmosphere.

Historically, Lagos was a centre for seafaring and exploration.

Sagres is located on the far western side of the Algarve. This remote fishing town lies in a wild and rugged region that boasts towering cliffs, vast beaches, and powerful seas.

These huge waves make Sagres a favourite for surfing, while the ramshackle appearance of the town conceals an underlying trendy vibe.

The wind blasted landscapes, and untamed natural scenery surrounding Sagres is very different from the tranquillity found in the rest of the Algarve. This is a fantastic day trip destination if you are an outdoors person or appreciate natures raw beauty.

Your day trip should include Sagres fort, which is protected on three sides by 30m high cliffs, and a visit to the Cabo de São Vicente headland. Related articles: Sagres guide

Cabo de São Vicente (the far western Algarve)

The Cabo de São Vicente is the southwestern most tip of mainland Europe, and was considered the end of the known world up until the 14th century. This is a barren and dramatic landscape, with ferocious Atlantic waves battering the giant cliffs and the ceaseless winds prevent any meaningful vegetation from growing.

A visit to the Cabo de São Vicente will not be long, but you will want to visit.

During the Moorish era (9-12th century) Silves was an important trading town and defensive stronghold, which ruled over much of southern Portugal.

The town is dominated by a massive red brick castle, and is one of the best-preserved Moorish buildings in the Algarve. Below the castle are cobbled streets, an ancient cathedral, impregnable town walls the and the slow-flowing Rio Arade.

Being slightly inland Silves has barely been altered with tourism, and still retains its distinctly Portuguese atmosphere. If you are going to take one day trip from Albufeira, Silves should be it. Related article: Silves introduction

Although one of the most overlooked destinations in the Algarve, Faro has a surprising amount to offer as a day trip.

The compact historic centre is encircled by ancient city walls and contains a gothic cathedral, baroque city hall and the ruins of a citadel. The modern city centre lies outside the city walls, and is filled with pleasant pedestrianised shopping streets and pretty plazas.

The Igreja do Carmo church is one of the most visited sights of Faro, due to the macabre Capela dos Ossos - bone chapel.

Faro is on the edge of the salt-marshes and lagoons of the Ria Formosa nature reserve, and these mudflats are a haven for seabirds and small marine life. To best explore the Ria Formosa join one of the boat tours which depart from the harbour. Related articles: Faro introduction – The bone chapel

Albufeira is the largest resort town of the Algarve and is a fun place to visit.

The town has two distinct areas; the Old Town and the Strip. The Old Town is centred around the original fishing village and comprises of whitewashed houses (now restaurants bars and hotels) and cobbled streets that led down to a magnificent beach.

The Strip is the party area of Algarve, offering all-day drinking promotions, wild nights and a place recover during the day. If you want a crazy night out Albufeira' Strip is the place to head to. Related article: Albufeira introduction

Loule is a traditional Portuguese market town and a great destination to experience authentic Portugal.

The daily market is housed in a Moorish inspired building, and includes stalls selling fresh produce, handicrafts, and gifts. Behind the market is a warren of cobbled streets lined with traditional workshops and houses.

On Saturday mornings, Loule comes alive with an additional two markets; a farmer's market hosted in the town centre, and a bustling gypsy market on the edge of the town. Note: The Loule market is closed on Sundays, so it's best to avoid planning a trip on Sunday. Related article: Loule guide

Olhão is a hard-working fishing town, and one of the only towns within the Algarve whose primary industry is not tourism.

Along the harbour front is a pretty park and the distinctive market building, while inland is the fisherman’s quarter with its cubic houses. Olhão has an authentic Portugal atmosphere while the unkept appearance adds to the character of the town. Related article: Olhão guide

Vila Real de Santo Antonio

Vila Real de Santo Antonio sits on the banks of the mighty Rio Guadiana, overlooking the Spanish border. The town has a grandeur beyond its size, and the centre is lined with impressive Baroque architecture. As part of the day trip, it is possible to cross the Guadiana River by ferry to the Spanish town of Ayamonte. Related articles: Vila Real de Santo Antonio

The peaceful town of Monchique is situated high up in the hills of northern Algarve.

This is a location to escape the hustle and bustle of the coastal towns, and the mountainous region is ideal for hiking, cycling or simply admiring the scenery. A popular hike is to Mount Fóia (902m) the highest point of the Algarve.

A short distance downhill lies Caldas de Monchique, a spa town renowned for its natural spring waters, heated to 30C and reputed for their healing properties.

Lisbon to Faro Day Trip: All The Ways You Can Make It Happen

Have you enjoyed your time in Lisbon, but are itching for a day trip to Faro and the Algarve region? Lucky for you there are a few ways you can make that happen!

Having made the trip myself on a couple of occasions I can give you a full report on how to best make this day trip!

Whether you’re interested in scenic train rides, efficient bus routes, or even an Algarve road trip, I’ll guide you through all your options!

Is a Day Trip to Faro Worth It From Lisbon?

YES! Because Faro is on the small side, it is absolutely worth making it a day trip!

If you aim to arrive early you can cover a lot of ground and return to Lisbon having felt that you saw the best of what Faro has to offer!

Where is Faro Located?

Faro is located in Southern Portugal , in the region called the Algarve. This small and picturesque city is a good place to base yourself when exploring the pristine beaches and charming nearby villages in the area.

The Distance from Lisbon to Faro

The distance between Lisbon and Faro is approximately 278 kilometers (about 173 miles) if you drive.

On average you can expect the journey to take anywhere from 2.5 hours to 3 hours by car , depending on traffic.

If you are taking the train or bus the travel time might be slightly longer , but it’s a comfortable way to make the trip.

How to Get From Lisbon to Faro

Option #1. lisbon / faro train route 🚊.

The most convenient and stress-free way to make a day trip down to Faro is by train .

There is a high speed that will get you there in 3 hours and a slightly longer route that takes 3.5 hours.

There are 2 main stations in Lisbon where the train goes to Faro, Santa Apolonia and Oriente.

➡️ Santa Apolonia is located in the old town of Lisbon and is a smaller station with only a few tracks.

➡️ Oriente is located outside the city center , but reachable by Metro. It is a very large station with multiple tracks.

PRO TIP: If large transit stations tend to overwhelm you , or if you are traveling solo in Lisbon , you might prefer to depart from Santa Apolonia. 🎟️ GET TRAIN TICKETS

Option #2. Drive From Lisbon to Faro 🚗

Another way to get to Faro is by taking a road trip from Lisbon through the Algarve. You can expect the drive from Lisbon to Faro to take around 2.5 – 3 hours depending on traffic.

You’ll mainly be travelling on the A2 highway , which connects Lisbon to the Algarve region. And then you will follow the A22 highway (also known as the Via do Infante), which runs across the Algarve region towards Faro.

🛑 Be aware that the A2 is a toll road . The toll fees can vary, so its a good idea to confirm the latest rates before you set off.

You can also expect tolls on the A22! These tolls are collected electronically by a system that takes a photo of the license plate.

If you are renting a car , the rental agency can provide you with options on how to pay these tolls . A popular oºtion is pre-paid toll service , which I would recommend.

Or you can pay at a post office or a payshop agent within a few days of passing through the toll. ( But who wants to hassle with that!? )

Option #3. Bus To Faro From Lisbon

The cheapest way to get to Faro is by bus! Tickets are as low as €16! The bus goes to Faro from the main station in Lisbon, Oriente.

The first bus leaves Lisbon at 10:30 in the morning and the last leaves at 23:00 . These routes are direct, and take on average around 3 hours 33 minutes.

Option #4. Private Faro Day Tour From Lisbon

If you rather leave all the details up to someone else you can book a PRIVATE day tour that leaves from Lisbon to Benajil, Faro, Portimao, and Sagres.

This private tour guides you to all the essential sights across the Algarve, beginning in Lisbon for a 12-hour journey.

Your driver will escort you in a comfortable, air-conditioned car that accommodates up to four people.

Tips for A Smooth Journey

• Book in Advance: If you are traveling in the off-season (November through March) it is less of a necessity, but any other time, book ahead! Plus, I find better deals when I book in advance.
• Check the Weather: The weather in Portugal is typically sunny in the summer, especially in the summer, but don’t forget to check. I wouldn’t want to visit the Faro or any beaches in the Algarve in rainy conditions.
• Pack Light but Wisely: Since you are just doing a day trip, you won’t need much . I would have the essentials on hand, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, and comfortable shoes.
• Early Start: To make the most of your day in Faro, you should start your day by 7am . This way you will have a full day before returning to Lisbon.

Personal Insights and Recommendations

• Favorite Spots: The best places to visit on your Faro itinerary include: Old Town of Faro , Faro Cathedral , Ria Formosa Natural Park , Capela dos Ossos (Bone Chapel), Arco da Vila .
• Navigating Faro: Faro is easy to get around by foot! If you take the bus or train to the main station it’s only a short 8-minute walk to the center of the town!
• Restaurants to Try: Faro is known for it’s seafood and shellfish! I recommend eating at Á do Pinto and 2 Irmãos!
• Safety Tips: During my visit to Faro, I encountered no safety concerns. It’s important to follow basic safety measures , like not leaving your belongings unattended.

PRO TIP: If you are short on time, but want to see all of Faro, consider doing a Tuk-Tuk tour! It will take you to all the cool spots in Faro, and you will learn some history of the city!

What’s Next?

If you want to extend your stay, Faro is a great place to base yourself! There are several day trips from Faro you can make. Nearby Tavira is something to consider, it’s an interesting and lesser-known destination to visit!

If the weather is good, you should make a plan to visit the Ria Formosa ! This natural park is known for its unique landscapes, lagoons, and a haven for wildlife, especially birds.

It’s a beautiful area to explore , especially for nature lovers.
