Owning a boat is very expensive. We’ll give you a stress free experience, without the overhead of owning a boat or having to rent a boat and pay for fuel/insurance yourself.
We’ll navigate the water, so you don’t have to worry about being responsible for a boat and your passengers.
Premium Experience
Enjoy the day on a luxury boat with your own private crew. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the day!
Our luxury 24′ Trifecta Pontoon is equipped with a 200hp Yamaha and is built for FUN! It includes premium seating, upgraded sound, a rear-facing lounger, double biminis, and vistas to make everyone smile. Yes, adults too
We make going to the lake easy…

Grand Lake Cruises – Boat Passenger Waivers
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? Let’s get you some answers…
Why charter vs. rent a boat myself?
Our goal is to alleviate the stress of a boat renter responsible for driving and keeping your passengers safe on the lake. Many required tasks like navigation, parking, and anchoring can be very challenging when the lake is busy or the wind picks up. A boat of this size requires an experienced driver. You may save a little money by renting yourself, but you’re responsible if things go wrong. With us, you have an experienced captain at your disposal. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views!
Why has your opening been delayed?
We are ready to take guests out on the lake NOW! However, commercial operations on Grand Lake require GRDA approval. We’re working on it and are unable to operate commercially until we gain these approvals. We apologize for the delay and look forward to taking your party out in the future!
How do I book a charter?
Our booking calendar is currently blocked as we await approval to operate commercially on Grand lake. We hope to be fully operational by May 1, 2024. When we receive approval to operate, we will gladly take your reservation! Then, we’ll coordinate a place to pick up your party. When booking, please let us know if we can do anything special or if you have certain things you wish to see on the trip.
How many people are allowed?
For your comfort, we suggest cruises of no larger than 8 people.
Are there any “hidden” fees?
The price quoted for the cruise includes the boat, fuel, and the crew. Whereas many charters require customers to pay an additional cost for fuel ($5-6/gallon on the lake), our cruise prices include the price of fuel.
Where do we meet and get picked-up?
Grand Lake Cruises is located in Grove OK on beautiful Grand Lake. We typically meet at:
- Wolf Creek Boat Ramp
- Honey Creek Marina
- Private docks on Grand Lake
- Other locations may be scheduled if approved by the captain
What about life jackets?
We’ll have 8 adult life jackets on board. If you have small children or infants, you’ll need to bring adequate flotation devices for them. Feel free to bring your own jackets, flotation devices, water cushions, noodles, etc.
What do I need to bring?
Bring everything you’d need for a day at the lake. Towels, sunscreen, food/snacks, drinks, etc. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water! If you don’t want to drag around a big cooler, that’s fine. We’ll have a Yeti 82-can cooler with ice on board. Please bring your own cooler for food.
Speaking of food, we DO NOT ALLOW:
- Messy/color-ridden snacks like Doritos, Cheetos and flaming chips.
- Highly-dyed drinks (especially purple or red).
- Sticky candy or sticky fruit snacks.
What if we want to cater the cruise?
The Regatta has you covered. They have a full menu including soft drinks, beer, wine, and liquor, and also serve up made-to-order pizzas. Just contact them in advance and they’ll have it ready for you.
Can I bring alcohol?
Yes, you can bring your favorite adult beverage. However, GRDA does not allow glass on the lake. Absolutely no red wine on the boat. Drinking in moderation can be a lot of fun. Drinking to excess is not allowed and will lead to an early end of the cruise.
We suggest no more than 2 adult beverages per hour, eating some food and drinking some water while on the cruise.
Can we go skiing or tubing?
We have several serene or active places on Grand Lake to go swimming. Unfortunately our insurance will not allow skiing, tubing or water sports on the cruise
Are pets allowed?
We know that most pets are an important part of the family. However, we cannot have them on the cruise. If you have questions related to this policy, feel free to contact us directly.
What's not allowed on the boat?
Pets: Sorry, not 4 legged family members.
Smoking: No smoking is allowed on the boat. If you want to smoke, you can smoke in the water, not on the boat.
Drugs: We say nope to the dope. The trip ends there.
Disobeying the Captain: We’re all here to have a good time so let’s disembark with good attitudes and no drama. All cruise passengers are required to follow all Captain’s orders. Failure to obey the captain…the trip ends.
What is the cancellation policy?
Hopefully, you make it! All the official payment and cancellation information will be published as soon as we’re legal to operate.

Fun on the Water in Grand Lake, Colorado
Sitting at the west entrance to rocky mountain national park is the charming town of grand lake, colo..
There are few things as beautiful as walking from downtown and catching sight of Grand Lake, Colorado’s largest and deepest lake. Surrounded by the historic town of the same name and mountains that tumble to its shores, Grand Lake offers a ton of water activities during the summer. Plus, you can hike into the park from town at the East Inlet Trail and see Adams Falls minutes from the parking area.
Most people visit Rocky Mountain National Park viea the park’s bustling east side. But the West Entrance at Grand Lake is striking, has fewer visitors and is well-worth checking out.
2023 Note : In summer 2023, timed-entry reservations are required for Rocky Mountain National Park between May 26 and October 22, and are in addition to your entrance fee. You can buy your timed-entry reservation for $2 at recreation.gov .
Here are our favorite things to do on the water at Grand Lake.
Go Boating on Grand Lake
In the morning, the waters of Grand Lake are smooth, making it a great time to explore by boat. It’s also the best time to be on the water because afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer in Colorado.
You have several options for boating on Grand Lake and nearby Shadow Mountain Lake. The Grand Lake Marina rents pontoon boats and Boston Whalers and is located at Grand Lake’s waterfront. It also offers chartered sunset party cruises for up to 35 people.
Or you can spend time on Shadow Mountain Lake, a reservoir connected to Grand Lake via a short canal. The Trail Ridge Marina on Shadow Mountain Lake rents pontoon boats, fishing boats and pleasure boats. It also offers boats tours for up to 12 people.
Go Paddling on Grand Lake
If you are looking to use your arms or feet to power your own boat, a couple businesses on the lakefront offer kayak and pedal boat rentals. You’ll see the glimmering gold, pink and purple pedal boats lining one of the wooden docks on Grand Lake. Pedal boats are a great way to experience the lake with kids. To avoid excessive pedaling, stay closer to shore rather than heading out to the middle of the lake, especially if the wind picks up. The water is choppier in the middle of the lake, making the waters difficult to navigate (and frustrating) for kids, especially if you are trying to make it back in a hurry to return your boat.
If paddling is more your style, Mountain Paddlers Kayak Shak on Grand Lake’s public boat dock rents several different types of kayaks. The Grand Lake Marina also rents kayaks, canoes and single-person paddle boards. With four miles of shoreline on Grand Lake, it takes about 2 hours to kayak the entire shoreline, according to Mountain Paddlers, but you also can just take your time exploring the lake without having to go all around it. For a slight change of scenery, you can kayak to Shadow Mountain Lake via a short canal. Shadow Mountain Lake is much larger than Grand Lake with 8 miles of shoreline and 1,346 surface acres.
If you want to launch from Shadow Lake, you can rent kayaks or paddle boards at the Trail Ridge Marina on Shadow Mountain Lake.
Swim at the Public Beach
Relax on the sandy public beach at Grand Lake and watch kayaks and boaters make their way across the lake. Be sure to bring chairs or towels to sit on as you take in the incredible views of the Rockies surrounding the lake. And it’s worth buying some beach toys in town, if you have children or grandchildren with you. While the lake water is really cold, kids, dogs and some brave adults will often run in and out of the lake to cool off from the sun’s strong rays. There is no lifeguard at this small beach, so keep an eye on your kids.

Man dies after boat crashes into island on lake
Russell Co., Ky. ( WKYT /Gray News) - A man died after a boat crashed into an island on a lake in Kentucky.
Authorities said 37-year-old Anthony J. Williams was killed when a boat crashed into Cemetery Island on Lake Cumberland around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities said another person was injured in the incident and required immediate medical attention for their injuries.
“You’re just, you’re running things through your mind, you know ‘what’s going on? Have we lost a life? Or do we have someone badly injured?’” Sergeant Wayne Wilson said. “From that very moment until you get to the scene, you’re trying to gather information.”
Wilson said the lack of light out on the water contributed to the dangerous conditions faced by those involved, such as not being able to see floating objects including logs and trash.
“They were operating after dark and that enhances the dangers,” he said. “You can’t see those things floating in the water.”
Wilson said it is important to maintain a safe speed when boating on the water and to wear a life jacket to prevent drowning deaths.

Polk County communities are supporting one another through the flooding
HOLIDAY LAKE ESTATES, Texas (KTRE) - Many areas in Polk County are still in water, the Holiday Lake Estates community is just one area that is still experiencing severe flooding.
“We got one day of reprieve, we actually had kind of a reprieve yesterday but last night we got hit pretty hard,” Arthur West, the fire chief of the Holiday Lake Estates VFD, said.
Some residents have evacuated the area while others decided to stay behind and tough if it out. Those that have stayed are receiving support from the community.
“They’re still going to need clothing, they’re still going to need bedding, they’re still going to need food stuff,” Gloria Christenbury, a community member who helped organize their support system.
People are donating items like clothing, food and toiletries. Those donations are then taken by volunteers via boats and jet skis to residents who are still in their home.
“We can’t sit and wait for the government to show up, we have to do something now and that is what we are doing right here,” Christenbury said.
Lufkin business owners Scott law and Jennifer Basham were also there with a crew, cooking hot meals. They were able to make at least 400 meals and said it was possible from donations that came from the Lufkin community.
“We saw a need and decided to act,” Law said.
“We knew there was a lot of trapped people back there that couldn’t get out to get supplies and groceries,” Basham said.
While they are seeing severe flooding now, many of the community members are just looking toward the future and hoping that conditions get better before they get worse.
“When it’s not flooding you couldn’t ask for a more peaceful quieter place. It’s like having a hole in your roof, when it’s not raining it’s good,” West said.
The Lake Livingston Dam is still discharging more than a hundred thousand cubic feet per second. But weather conditions are looking better less rain is seen in the forecast.

The 17 best things to do in the Lake District
T he Lake District, undoubtedly, has some of Britain’s finest scenery and fell-walking. But it has much more – much (not surprisingly) as a consequence of its headline-grabbing views. Writers, poets and artists (such as Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth) were drawn here, leaving fascinating homes to explore. Wealthy folk built grand houses and gardens to capitalise on the landscapes. Quirky things to do include a distillery tour, slate mine and pencil museum – but honestly nothing beats a lake cruise for complete relaxation.
For further Lake District inspiration, see our guides to the area's best hotels , restaurants , pubs and walks . Use our expert guide to plan the perfect holiday in the Lake District.

Outlying areas, take a cruise along england's longest lake.
For many people, Windermere, which stretches for over 10 miles between Ambleside and Newby Bridge, is the heart of the Lake District. Inevitably, it attracts swarms of visitors, particularly at its Bowness pier, but a ride on one of its lake cruisers, gliding past its 18 islets, is an undeniably enjoyable way to take in the lovely scenery. There’s a choice of routes, and you can usually break the journey at one of the landing stages.

Visit Beatrix Potter's perfectly preserved house
The 17th-century farmhouse Hill Top is where children’s author, Beatrix Potter, created some of her best-known stories. It’s still furnished as she left it when she died in 1943: in the entrance hall are her straw hat and clogs, in the bedroom are the bed hangings that she embroidered. Most fun is to be had by spotting the scenes illustrated in her books: the grandfather clock from The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, the chimney stack that Tom Kitten failed to escape from and Mr McGregor’s cottage garden.
Insider tip: In summer, it heaves with visitors so visit early on a weekday if you can.

You don’t have to be a nautical nerd to be captured by the workmanship, fun and romance of its collection of vintage steam launches, speedboats and rowing boats that celebrate the area’s connection with all things watery. Marvel at a grand Victorian saloon launch, at the plainness of Beatrix Potter’s rowing boat (very uncomfortable), or at the cleverness of early life-jackets (pockets filled with corks), then watch craftsmen repair boats using traditional skills.
Insider’s tip: Take a cruise boat from Bowness (in winter, request stop only) to arrive in suitable style. See windermere-lakecruises.co.uk for details.

Explore a grand Victorian-era holiday home
Blackwell House, a gem of an Arts and Crafts house overlooking Windermere, was designed in 1898 by leading architect M H Baillie Scott as a holiday home for a wealthy Manchester brewer. It’s a delight of original handmade details from William De Morgan tiled fireplaces to carved oak panelling, jewel-coloured stained glass windows to a sweeping peacock frieze. But it’s the space, the light, the attention to detail - window latches are individually carved - that staggers.
Insider tip: Time your visit for later in the day so you can sit in the window of the White Drawing Room and watch the light fade over Windermere.

Take a proper dip in the water
So, you want to get in the water – after all, there’s plenty of it – but not sure where, how or what to wear? The team at Swim the Lakes, based in Ambleside, can provide all the answers, get you kitted out, and take you off for a fun, exhilarating – yet safe – splash in the water. Choose from a beginners’ introductory course to half- and full-day swims, and in watery settings from pretty Rydal Water, the Swallows and Amazons territory of Coniston Water, amongst the rushes of a river, in high-level tarns and waterfalls, or on a secret night swim. Hot drinks and sweet munchies provided.
Insider tip: You’ll need a wetsuit (unless you’re a hardened pro) but can hire them from the company; big towels or a ‘dryrobe’ also recommended

See inside William Wordsworth's whitewashed cottage
Whitewashed Dove Cottage, where William Wordsworth lived for eight years from 1799 and wrote his most famous works, recreates the atmosphere – sights, smells, sounds – of the poet’s day. Look out for the chair where he dictated to his sister Dorothy or wife, Mary (he composed when out walking), his skating boots (he boasted he could carve his initials on the ice of Grasmere) and friend Thomas de Quincey’s opium scales. Don’t miss the small restored garden-orchard behind the cottage of which William and Dorothy were so fond.
Insider tip: From behind the cottage, it's a lovely two-mile walk – despite its name, the Coffin Trail – with views of Grasmere, to the poet's last home, Rydal Mount , and its 'romantic-style’ gardens.

Stroll around a Lakeland market town
While many towns here feel like tourist attractions, Keswick retains the jaunty, working air of a Lakeland market town. On the shores of pretty Derwentwater, it offers something for everyone from lake cruises (hop on and off to combine with a lakeside stroll), the Derwent Pencil Museum (see one of the world’s longest pencils), outdoors shops and arty shops, a twice-weekly market, Castlerigg Stone Circle and an excellent theatre .
Insider tip: Take an early-morning walk to Friar’s Crag on the lakeshore for memorable views up the lake to 'the jaws of Borrowdale' – the local name for the entrance to the steep-sided valley.
Tour a distillery and taste some Lake District whisky
Craft beers are well-known in the Lake District, but whisky was an entirely new proposition when the Lakes Distillery opened in 2014. But why not? Crystal-clear river water filtered by the fells is key to the taste. On the site of a Victorian model farm, beside Bassenthwaite Lake, the distillery’s behind-the-scenes tour – and tasting – lets you discover how the whisky, gin and vodka are produced.
Insider tip: Children needn't be bored; they can take an alpaca for a walk from the on-site herd.

Take a trip down England's last working slate mine
Drop deep inside a mine or scale the steep and rocky Fleetwith Pike (no experience needed for either) at Honister Slate Mine, England’s last working slate mine. At the top of the 1-in-4 Honister Pass, this slate mine has been worked commercially since the 18th century. Take a guided mine tour or get high on adrenaline on Europe’s longest high-wire bridge or on one of two Via Ferratas (routes with fixed cables and ladders) that let you scale vertical rock faces in safety, despite dizzying drops beneath.
Insider tip: Whatever the weather, make sure you come in waterproofs, gloves and strong footwear.

Take to the water without getting wet
If you want to get close to the water but not actually in it (except by accident), hire one of the craft from Derwent Water Marina in Portinscale, a 15-minute walk (or five-minute drive) across the northern end of the lake from Keswick. Derwentwater is less busy and more sheltered than the other main boating lakes – and, many would argue, the prettiest of all. Choose from paddle boards, canoes and kayaks to rowing boats and pedalos.
Insider tip: Pack a picnic for landing on three of the lake’s four islands ( all owned by the National Trust ), St Herbert’s Island, Rampsholme Island and Derwent Island, the latter the only inhabited island and only open on specific days of the year.

Amble through a picturesque village
There's more than sticky toffee pudding to ludicrously pretty Cartmel – though you should still make sure to pop in to the Village Shop to buy some. Elsewhere you’ll find artisan cheeses and breads, craft beer, funky homewares and a clutch of antique shops. Or just enjoy wandering its crooked lanes and calling in at its fine 12th-century priory church – and work up the appetite to eat at one of its starry establishments: L'Enclume (three stars) and Rogan & Co (one star).
Insider tip: Time your visit for one of the races at Cartmel Racecourse , surely Britain's prettiest?
Enjoy a brisk walk up to a knoll with staggering views
If you want to tick off a (minor) hill but don’t fancy one of the big-hitters then Gummer's How, a little knoll at the southern end of Windermere, fits the bill. Around 30 to 40 minutes gets you to the summit from where you’ll be rewarded with staggering views: on a clear day south to Morecambe Bay, east to the Pennines, north to the Lakeland fells, while below is shimmering Windermere.
Insider tip: Two miles along the road (away from the lake) from the start/finish of the walk is the Masons Arms , just the spot for a good pub lunch and a rest on the terrace overlooking the Winster valley.
Coniston and Langdale
Discover a sizeable art collection in an historic house.
The home of the formidable Victorian art critic, philosopher and artist John Ruskin, Brantwood has a peerless position overlooking Coniston Water. There's as much to see outside as inside (look out for his collection of Turners as well as his own fine watercolours), as Ruskin was a pioneering environmentalist, creating separate 'garden rooms' in his steep-sided garden.
Insider tip: The finest way to arrive is by water in the, appropriately Victorian, Steam Yacht Gondola ( nationaltrust.org.uk/steam-yacht-gondola , mid-March-October) with its rich upholstery and stately pace.
Contact: brantwood.org.uk
Burn off some energy, or enjoy a picnic, amongst the trees
Spread over low hills, dotted with tarns, between Esthwaite Water and Coniston Water, Grizedale Forest offers entertainment for outdoors-lovers of all abilities. There are walking trails, cycling and mountain biking trails (bikes to hire), orienteering courses, Go Ape tree-top zipwire and assault courses, and picnic spots for those who prefer to stroll and watch others do the hard work. Fun can be had spotting the sculptures and installations dotted around the forest, from a giant key in a tree to a totem pole and a huge tilted Polo-shaped tree-trunk that doubles as a seat.
Insider’s tip: For fine views, take the trail to Carron Crag, the highest point (314m, 1030ft) where, on clear days, Morecambe Bay can be seen as well as Helvellyn, the Landale Pikes and Coniston Old Man.

Hike up to a beautiful waterfall
It's an uphill walk, but not too steep and not too far (around 20 minutes from the car park), and undeniably romantic as you zig-zag up woodland paths to this beautiful waterfall, Aira Force. Like a mane of Rapunzel's hair, it plunges 70 feet into magical pools, and is most spectacular after heavy rainfall – which, let's face it, isn’t too hard to achieve in the Lakes.
Insider tip: Just to the south of here, on the shores of Ullswater around Glencoyne Bay, is where William Wordsworth saw a 'host of golden daffodils' and was inspired to write his famous poem.

Explore a lived-in castle and have fun and games in the grounds
Not only is this splendid castle – with its towers and battlements and ghosts – still lived-in, but lived in by the same family since the 13th century. Extensively renovated – most notably by Victorian architect, Anthony Salvin – it’s as much about what‘s on offer outside as the grand rooms inside, and that makes it a good family day out. The 70 acres of gardens and woodland include rare and exotic specimens, a riot of rhododendrons, an enchanted trail, ‘meadowvole maze’ and a hawk and owl centre – from vultures, kites and eagles to the cute southern white-faced owl – with daily flying displays.
Insider tip: Check out the busy and varied events programme from Easter egg hunts and Halloween frights to open-air theatre, music and medieval weekends.

Journey through fields on board a mini steam train
Despite your best efforts to appear cool, you’ll still get ridiculously excited as you board the Thomas-the-Tank-Engine style Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, which steams upwards through fields and woodland on the former iron-ore route from Ravenglass up Eskdale. It's cute as kittens with its gleaming brass, wooden floors, and choo-chooing engine.
Insider tip: You can hop off at any station and walk to any of the others to board again. There's also a quiet circular walk from the final station, Dalegarth, through Boot to Doctor Bridge and back along the pretty River Esk via St Catherine's Church.

Every weekend is an adventure
A weekend boating/sailing gippsland lakes: things to do and tips.
- Post published: 31 January 2020
- Post category: Australia / Oceania/South Pacific / Victoria
The Gippsland Lakes is a perfect destination to spend time on the water near Melbourne. Known for being the largest inland waterways in the southern hemisphere, it may even be one of Australia’s best spots for recreational boating. Sailing Gippsland Lakes was my favourite way to explore the region, but there are many other things to do in Gippsland Lakes if you aren’t a sailor!
There are different ways to explore the waters at Gippsland Lakes that will suit all budgets and levels of boating experience.
This article is focused on ways to explore Gippsland Lakes from the water. If you want to stick to land activities, you may find Gippsland Lakes relaxing but overrated. It’s a lovely place, but the cruise opportunities make it special. There are better coastal places near Melbourne to explore by foot or by car, such as the Mornington Peninsula or Wilsons Promontory.
In three days, we were able to sail on Lake Victoria and Lake King, with a few stops to enjoy the coast. The Gippsland Lakes is a good area to gain sailing experience as it’s easy to navigate and hard to get in bad situations: there are no hidden rocks and we could quite easily see the shallow areas.
Visiting Gippsland Lakes after the 2020 bushfire disaster
Unfortunately, the East Gippsland region became famous for other reasons than its beautiful landscapes. The entire world talked about how Australia was on fire. Although the bushfires were tragic and destructive, it wasn’t quite right to say that the entire country was hit by the disaster.
The bushfires did affect Gippsland Lakes: there was a lot of smoke, and holidaymakers were asked to leave the area because of the high fire dangers. However, Gippsland Lakes didn’t burn and it looked lovely when we visited late January 2020. There was sometimes a bit of haze, but nothing too bad that would justify not going. The road was open – but most of the roads further east were still closed.
The bushfires happened during the peak tourist season. Local businesses need tourists to come back to the region and support the economy. If you’re hesitating: check the roads are open , check there’s no warning … and book your trip! You’ll have a great time.
Different options to explore Gippsland Lakes
See gippsland lakes on a sailing boat.
Those who follow my blog regularly won’t be surprised that I chose a sailing adventure to explore the Gippsland Lakes. We are always on the lookout for sailing holidays and bareboat charters in Australia . For me, sailing is a fantastic way to connect with nature. Plus, one of the good things about sailing is that it’s also fun when the weather isn’t that good – as long as there’s a bit of wind! Considering the weather forecast isn’t often sunny in Gippsland Lakes, that’s something to consider.
We hired a sailing boat from Riviera Nautic in Metung and spent our first night in Bunga Arm and the second night in Harper’s Bight (see map at the end of the article).
Responsible travel tip : Sailing holidays are eco-friendly as you limit your use of resources. Using the sails and a small motor reduce fuel use and water onboard is limited.
See Gippsland Lake on a motorboat
It’s also easy to hire a motorboat to explore Gippsland Lakes, even without a licence.
Stay in a villa or room with a view and explore the lakes on a small boat
If you don’t like the idea to spend the night on the boat, or prefer to do a day trip, you can easily hire small day boats. Staying in a villa on the lake could be an excellent option. Check out these ones that have a jetty:
- The Moorings at Metung *
- Captains Cove Resort *
- McMillans of Metung Resort *
- A Window on the Bay *
Airbnb lists many accommodations with lake views *.
If you are a big group, check out Fraser Island Retreat *.
Responsible travel tip : Although sailing holidays are more eco-friendly, staying on land and going to cafes and restaurants is a better way to support the local economy.
Go camping with a small boat
If a villa is out of your budget and you only have a small boat, you may want to have a look at camping. Bunga Arm campground has seven scenic campgrounds that are only accessible by boat. You’ll need to book in advance .
Go kayaking
The Gippsland Lakes system is huge, so you’d only see a small part of it when kayaking for a day. Still, it’s a fun way to be on the water and explore some places that are only accessible via the water.
Join a tour
If you want to fish or try to spot dolphins without going through the hassle of hiring a boat, you can simply join a tour. Most of them leave from Lakes Entrance. Going on a tour is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the region and spot wildlife. The locals always have a better eye and know what to look for!
Things to do in Gippsland Lakes when boating or sailing
At the end of the article, you’ll find a map of the things I recommend and our itinerary.
If like us you’re lucky with the weather when you go sailing Gippsland Lakes, you may want to refresh with a dip. A lot of jellyfish were floating around the lake which wasn’t appealing for jumping out of the boat. But they weren’t at the few spots reputed for swimming: in Duck Arm (at the start of the Banksia Peninsula) and Barrier Landing. As it’s close to the entrance where the lake system connects with the ocean, the water at Barrier Landing is clearer than anywhere else in the lake system which makes it the most popular swimming spot in Gippsland Lakes. It’s also a short walk away from Ninety Mile Beach, on the ocean side.
Responsible travel tip : Use the poles on the beach or anchor in the sand rather than using trees to secure your boat.
Ninety Mile Beach
Ninety Mile Beach is one of the longest stretches of sand in the world. Wherever you stop on the lakeside and walk to the ocean, you end up on Ninety Mile Beach. And it’s so long that you don’t see the end of it.
Except for the length, I didn’t find it particularly special and preferred staying on the other side, enjoying being on the boat more than on a beach.
Bioluminescent zooplankton
During our second night at Harper’s Bight, the bioluminescent zooplankton was spectacular and without a doubt my biggest surprise and highlight during this sailing trip. It looked like fairy dust!
I am unsure of how common it is to see this when sailing Gippsland Lakes. But we had all the ingredients for it: there was a lot of rain a few days before our visit, and we were visiting during the warm season.
I’ve seen beautiful photos of the bioluminescence in Gippsland Lakes taken after a series of bushfires in 2008 when ash and nitrogen-rich soil washed up in Gippsland Lakes and attracted the bioluminescent zooplankton. We visited when a part of Victoria , including a part of East Gippsland, was declared as a disaster zone because of the terrible bushfires, which might be the reason why we got to see incredible bioluminescent zooplankton in Gippsland Lakes.
I highly recommend moving the water once it’s all dark. Maybe nothing will happen. But maybe it will be magic!
Unfortunately, being on a rocking sailing boat didn’t allow us to take long-exposure photos and capture the stunning bioluminescence.
Bird watching
Bird watching in Gippsland Lakes was fantastic.
Have you heard of the black swan theory ? It’s based on the fact that Europeans believed for a long time that black swans did not exist. It was a symbol of something impossible like we’d say nowadays chickens with teeth or flying pigs. Black swans are actually widespread in Australia , but they’re still a rare sight for Europeans. In Gippsland Lakes, they are everywhere, mixing with a few pelicans and cormorants.
We also saw white-belly sea eagles and many terns.
Visiting pubs
There aren’t many places in Australia where you can sail in beautiful nature from one pub to another. We weren’t ready for a pub crawl during our weekend, but it sounds fun to go to the pub straight from the boat. It can also be very convenient if you haven’t organised food in advance.
Spotting wild koalas
If you haven’t had a chance yet to spot a koala in the wild, then don’t miss Raymond Island. More than 200 koalas live in residential streets around the island, between houses and in inhabitants’ gardens. The koala trail gives you an opportunity to learn more about the marsupial during the 1.2km walk.
To reach Raymon Island, you’ll have to take a short ferry ride from Paynesville. It’s free for pedestrians.
As we had many times the opportunity to see koalas in the wild (on the Great Ocean Road , on Stradbroke Island and on Magnetic Island ), we skipped Raymond Island to escape to more natural areas on Gippsland Lakes.
Internet research describes Gippsland Lakes as a popular fishing destination. With Australia’s largest fishing port located in Lakes Entrance, some even say it’s Australia’s fishing capital.
From our experience, don’t rely on fishing for your meals. You may have more luck than we did if you try fishing on the ocean side. Although white breams and flathead were mentioned by a few locals, we didn’t even see one fish in the lake system.
Spotting dolphins and seals
We weren’t lucky enough to see dolphins or seals during our sailing trip in Gippsland Lakes. The endangered Burrunan dolphins live in the bay, and there are tours organised to spot them.
Watersports
While sailing Gippsland Lakes, we saw many locals having fun water-skiing.
How many days do you need for boating or sailing Gippsland Lakes?
We used a three-day long weekend for our sailing adventure in Gippsland Lakes. It was a good length, although we wouldn’t have minded staying one more day to visit a few more spots and take more time sailing.
If you live in Melbourne and can travel to Gippsland Lakes on Friday night, it could be worth going even just for a weekend. We could arrive the night before to stay on our sailing boat at no extra cost.
Things to bring for your Gippsland Lakes sailing/boating trip
Warm clothes and shorts.
Even during summer, the nights were cold on the lake. If you’re lucky during your sailing trip, you’ll have a bit of wind. It also means more risks of being cold! We had lovely weather during our summer weekend in Gippsland Lakes, but we all put on a jacket when the wind picked up one afternoon to more than 20 knots!
Even during the colder months, you want to pack shorts. In many places, we had to beach our sailing boat to access land. Most jetties are private or too busy. We were going off the boat from the front, with a ladder. The water wasn’t too high, but we’d still get wet to the knees.
Rain jacket
I never go sailing or boating without a rain jacket. Even if it doesn’t rain, it can be used as a wind stopper and keep me warm.
When you’re on the water, it’s important to apply sunscreen regularly – even when it’s cloudy.
Responsible travel tip : Did you know your sunscreen can pollute the water and harm animals? The best way to protect your body from the sun is to cover it with long sleeves and pants. If you do have to use sunscreen, choose a mineral one (like zinc) to avoid harmful substances (see the full list here ) and apply it at least 20 minutes before entering the water.
Polarised sunglasses
Some parts of the Gippsland Lakes look a lot more beautiful when you’re wearing polarised sunglasses. These types of sunglasses are also excellent for spotting better shallow areas.

Gippsland lakes map.
The map above is a summary of the places I recommend in the article, and of our itinerary during our three-day sailing adventure in Gippsland Lakes. While sailing, we used this map . It was also useful to have a phone app to help with navigation as our sailing boat didn’t have a GPS.
We hired our boat in Metung, and it took four hours to drive there from Melbourne . We flew to Melbourne on Friday night after work and drove to Gippsland Lakes early on Saturday morning. With the time difference in summer, we could fly back to Brisbane on Tuesday morning and still arrive on time for work.

Had a wonderful boating holiday thanks to Riviera Nautic. Fantastic service from Cam and the team. Highly recommended!
Haolei, Tanjil 41
On behalf of my entire group, I would like to extend our greatest appreciation to Riviera Nautic for helping us with our little getaway last weekend.
Both families in our booking had an outstanding time using the Crusader, jetting around to some different areas on the lake to enjoy some fun watersports. We did everything from kayaking, paddleboarding, jumping off piers and the boat, fishing, swimming and just chillaxing on the beaches and on the top deck of the boat.
Your friendly and professional team delivered an excellent service from start to finish. The wonderful communication leading up to the event made it easy to plan and address our questions and the support and guidance throughout the briefing and whilst away on the trip was fantastic.
We have recommended your company to a number of our friends and we would happily re-book with you again in future.
Again, thank you all for making our getaway so memorable and enjoyable.
Tania, Bulls Mariner 10
We recently booked a 7-day sailing holiday with Riviera Nautic and had the ABSOLUTE BEST time.
We were able to sail our own boat and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the Gippsland Lakes. Our yacht was well-maintained, clean and super comfortable. I was worried how we’d go with 2 kids and 2 adults on a boat for a whole week, but it didn’t feel cramped at all, and it was amazing to dock next to a jetty or pull onto a beach and swim, walk, fish, play and explore to our heart’s content.
We got to hang out as a family and spend proper quality time together – sailing during the day and playing board games on the boat at night – away from our usual screens and devices!
The Riviera Nautic team gave us plenty of guidance and were always available to answer questions both before we arrived and once we were on the water.
Highly recommend a boating holiday and with Riviera Nautic, it was so easy and so, so much fun. Thanks RN team!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
