YEOJA Mag - Hoso, horror drag performer

Hoso (호소)Terra Toma (they/them) is one of the leading drag performers in the Seoul drag scene today.

A Korean American Alternative Drag Queen (a drag queen that doesn’t conform to mainstream drag trends and aesthetics), Hoso is someone that the South Korean LGBTGIA+ community looks up to as one of the most important figureheads of today’s movement. YEOJA sat down with Hoso to talk about drag and identifying as queer in a society where homosexuality is still such a taboo issue.

Hoso, when did you first realise that you were interested in dressing in a non-conformist way? Did this realisation coincide with the experimentation of your sexuality? Hoso Terra Toma: I think it’s a combination of myself as a person just being a natural nonconformist and the social pressure that’s put on queer people – and then pushing that even further. I’ve always liked to dress weirdly and with me being queer and all, obviously the unpleasant looks were doubled. When this happens to queer people it usually goes one of two ways: they either “norm up” their style in shame or they say ‘you can all eat shit and watch me slay’. I’m sure you can guess which way I went.

Was there a pivotal moment for you when you decided you wanted to be a performer, rather than expressing yourself in drag privately? Hoso Terra Toma: A very specific moment was when I watched the legendary performer and Dragula contestant Evah Destruction’s performance video of “ That Laughing Track ” . The energy she exuded on stage, seeing the shock on other peoples faces, and the moment she turned herself completely into a character was pure perfection for me and it made me want to be the same way.

As a Korean American, have you faced prejudice in either Korea or America for expressing yourself? Hoso Terra Toma: I am a person who is well-versed in both cultures; strangely enough in most cases it works against me and doesn’t allow me to fit in with either of these communities. So I always had to find my community and people who I felt comfortable fully being myself with. I have very little patience when it comes to being the odd one out in the room.

You have quite a strong American accent, so I am assuming you grew up in the US and if that is the case when and why did you decide to move to Korea? Hoso Terra Toma: I do realize I sound very Caucasian and it’s a curse I’ve decided to bear (jk), but in all seriousness, I’d say I’m just as fluent in Korean as I am in English. For most of my life, I was very much more fluent in Korean than I was in English. I’ve spent more time here in Korea but right now since I’m in a community where I mostly speak English, it helped me out a lot in terms of becoming more fluent with my speech patterns. I went back and forth a lot as a child so I wouldn’t even specify one country as my “home”, to be honest.

Your drag style is very unique. For people that were introduced to the drag scene through programs such as Ru Paul’s Drag Race , the horror aesthetic is not one that people have been as exposed to. This aesthetic is also quite popular in Visual Kei (a subculture originating from Japan). Is there possibly a cultural element that separates Eastern drag from Western drag, and is the horror aesthetic one of them? Essentially, what inspires your gruesome looks and why do you think there is an under-representation of drag queens/kings with a similar style? Hoso Terra Toma: Well, to be honest, I was absolutely one of the people who were introduced to drag through Ru Paul’s Drag Race . When Korean-American drag performer and a legendary makeup artist KimChi walked the stage on Drag Race , that’s when I really started to get into it. But even then, I felt a disconnect there as if I didn’t fully see myself doing what the gxrls on the show were doing.

Then, I discovered the first season of Dragula and it just clicked for me. I saw all these amazing alternative performers that made sense with my love for weird and nonconformist ways, and for the first time, I thought I wanted to be like them.  I’ve always had a thing for dress up, so much so that I was a cosplayer for the longest time. My passion for the macabre art played a big part in my drag. As far as representation goes, it has been getting better with shows like Dragula undeniably paving the way and Drag Race bringing in alternative performers time to time, but even then, countless drag artists who are in between or beyond the aesthetics that the mainstream media considers “drag”, are being mistreated and devalued. We have a long way to go and we have to keep being unapologetically queer and out of the norm to be seen and heard.

Also, regarding your question relating to the differences between Eastern and Western drag, I would say that the horror and alternative aesthetic is still very niche within the Eastern drag community in general. Western drag is absolutely friendlier towards and accepting of alternative drag, just for the simple fact that Western drag is much bigger in terms of quantity and scope. Because of that, it’s been easier for alternative drag artists to form a community of their own in the Western scene.

Although you mainly focus on horror-inspired aesthetics you also occasionally dress more femininely and paint your face using traditional make-up techniques. How do you decide which look to settle on before performing? Hoso Terra Toma: I like to play with how I represent myself and twist whatever I feel like people would expect from me. The whole point of my drag is to get people to be on the edge of their seats and challenge their idea of what I should dress or present myself as. I don’t want to be predictable ever, hence why I want to play with every aesthetic under the moon [sic] possible.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest COVID-19 outbreaks occurred in a gay nightclub in the famous foreigner district of Seoul, Itaewon. Do you think that the repercussions have affected the LGBTQIA+ and non-Korean community living in Korea as a result? Hoso Terra Toma: Oh absolutely. Even though it was revealed that the outbreaks were happening all over the town at the same time including straight clubs, the infections at the gay clubs were reported first, so the blame went to the gays. It doesn’t help that the media took notice of the pre-existing prejudice against the Korean queer community, and used that to tear   our communities’ names apart every chance they got to. As a result, we were to blame for a while.

In today’s climate, there is such a divide between people who stand up for, and are advocates for, LGBTQIA+ rights and race issues and those that aren’t. Drag queens have always been known to be passionate spokesfolx regarding such topics. Therefore, do you view drag as a political movement?  Hoso Terra Toma: All drag is political, regardless of the artist’s intentions or awareness level. It is inherently political in a sense that drag breaks the social expectations of what you should present yourself as, and therefore puts you in the position of a traitor in the eyes of society. And yes, this applies for every type of drag. Some people like to use this as an excuse to bash fem drag performers who are cis-gender women or vice versa, however, where in the world could you see cis-gender women walking down the street in full clown face, stacked wigs, a costume and still be seen as a regular pedestrian? Drag as an art form has come to a point where everyone who participates in it is seen as being radically queer.

Drag is an art form which a lot of members within the LGBTQIA+ community use to express their true selves, their fantasies and their versions of an alternative reality. With this in mind, why do you think that it’s more acceptable for a man to become a drag queen than a womxn to become a drag king? Hoso Terra Toma: I mean there’s still a problem with misogyny, right? Even if it’s the most punk thing, and the most “outsider” environment, there’s always going to be the most privileged and the most powerful in the scene. That’s not going to change unless it’s like a paradise, you know? So, cis gay men are admittedly the most powerful in the scene.

Drag itself was founded and developed by some of the most powerful trans womxn (bitter betty, sasha colby) AFAB (assigned female/male at birth) performers (shanita bump, venus envy, creme fatale), drag kings (landon cider, spokey van dykey, tenderonni), and non-binary performers (hollow eve and myself). Still, the cis gay men performers – and I’m not shitting on them – are the ones that are getting the credit and the most visibility. Look at Ru Paul’s Drag Race , Ru Paul is usually only interested in getting the most cis gay white men, from what you see represented on the show.

There is also a lack of visibility for womxn of colour, even though these are the folx that paved the way for the scene to develop in the first place. At the end of the day, drag is an art form for rebels. It’s a place for people to say “fuck you” to gender stereotypes and gender norms. A place to look heteronormativity and society in their faces and give a middle finger to the idea of gender because it’s all fake. For drag to have all these rules like: you have to be this tall, you have to have padding, you have to tuck, you have to be a man – it goes against the very idea of what makes drag, drag. So yeah, it’s a very simple yet sad fact that the current queer community is dominated by cis gay men and unfortunately both misogyny and transphobia thrive within this community.

In an ideal world, what would drag look like to you? Hoso Terra Toma: In my ideal world, gender would be no more and the concept would be meaningless and useless. If we continue practising the artform we do now, then, I guess it wouldn’t be considered “drag” anymore, just elaborate theatre art.  A world without gender is very much still a fairytale idea, so I guess we will all be freakshow clowns for a bit longer. Lol.

What do you wish people outside of the LGBTQIA+ community knew or considered about drag before judging those involved?   Hoso Terra Toma: They should know that it’s an art form that is very well developed, the current product of which has evolved over a long time. Drag has also moved forward from what it used to be perceived as, even within the drag community itself, and the term is now almost a blanket expression for a lot of different genres of queer performance art. For those that are interested in learning more about drag performance culture, they shouldn’t try so hard to fit it in a box; that way they may be able to understand it more easily.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering drag as a profession? Or, perhaps, someone who enjoys the art form but doesn’t know how to become more involved in the community? Hoso Terra Toma: Just start doing it! That’s the only way you can get a head start, because most of the time people want to do it but end up not doing it because they don’t know where to start. Wherever you are starting, even if it’s just trying to copy someone else’s makeup from a Youtube tutorial, you should just start and see where that leads you.

As mentioned, Ru Paul’s Drag Race is now so popular that almost everyone has heard of it. Can you recommend any other shows to people who want to expand their knowledge of the scene?   Hoso Terra Toma: The Boulet Brothers Dragula ! For those of you who don’t know, Dragula is a drag reality competition program now streaming on Netflix (US and European) which focuses on drag artists who are alternative and punk. There’s lots of blood, lots of macabre and it’s lots of fun. Also, try finding out about drag artists through local live drag shows or Instagram!

Narrow Road to the Deep North

  • 5 Stay safe

The Narrow Road to the Deep North (奥の細道 Oku no Hosomichi ) is the title of famed haiku poet Matsuo Basho' s most famous work, a poem-filled travelogue through Japan 's remote northeastern region of Tohoku .

Understand [ edit ]

One of the most famous travelogues ever, the Narrow Road continues to inspire Japanese art and visitors to Tohoku , and each of the places Basho visited continues to revere his poems and observations.

In Basho's day, the land of Oku (奥), literally "Within", was the back of beyond in Japan, where farmers eked out a meager living and bandits and hermits roamed in the mountains. Well aware of the dangers awaiting him, Basho fully expected to never return, selling his house and preparing a will.

When reading Basho's work, it is important to note that he takes more than a few poetic liberties with the exact route chosen and the sights seen. Fortunately, he traveled for most of the way with fellow poet Sora, whose more factual diary has allowed the reconstruction of the route.

Prepare [ edit ]

Back in 1689 Basho walked the entire distance, starting in late spring and taking over five months (156 days, to be precise) for the entire journey. Even with the assistance of modern transportation and perfect scheduling (public transport is sparse in this neck of the woods), it would take a month for a whirlwind tour of all visited sights.

Due to Basho's predilection for mountain climbing, a faithful copy of the itinerary can only be done in summer, after the heavy snows of the Sea of Japan coast have melted and the mountains are accessible.

Get in [ edit ]

The starting point of the trip is Tokyo , the capital of Japan. As the first stretch of the trip has been largely absorbed into urban sprawl, many choose to head straight for Sendai (Stage 18) and start their trip there (with a possible detour to Nikko).

Go [ edit ]

hoso tour

Basho's original itinerary is as follows, with modern place names or major nearby cities in parentheses where applicable.

  • Stages 1-2: Sugamo ( Tokyo )

Basho starts off from the traditional areas ( shitamachi ) of Edo, bidding farewell to Ueno and Yanaka — both well worth a visit.

  • Stage 3: Soka
  • Stage 4: Muronoyashima
  • Stage 5: Nikko

Intriguingly, Basho does not even mention Nikko's largest tourist draw, the extravagant Tokugawa mausoleums. Instead, he climbs Mt. Nikko and visits Futarasan Shrine, dedicated to the mountains' guardian spirits.

  • Stages 6-9: Nasu (Kurobane, Unganji, Sesshoseki)
  • Stage 10: Shirakawa
  • Stage 11: Sukagawa
  • Stage 12: Asaka ( Fukushima )
  • Stage 13: Shinobu
  • Stage 14: Sato Shoji
  • Stage 15: Iizuka
  • Stage 16: Kasajima
  • Stage 17: Takekuma
  • Stage 18: Sendai

In Sendai, Basho met with a famous artist, Kaemon, whom he admired. Kaemon showed him some of his favorite places, such as Miyagino (no longer in existence), Mutsu Kokubunji's Yakushido, and Tsutsujigaoka Tenmangu Shrine.

  • Stage 19: Tsubo no Ishibumi ( Ichikawa )
  • Stage 20: Shiogama

Matsuo's chosen route of boarding a boat here for Matsushima remains very popular today.

  • Stage 21: Matsushima

The craggy pine tree islands here are considered one of Japan's Top 3 scenic spots.

  • Stage 22: Ishinomaki
  • Stage 23: Hiraizumi

Once a capital that rivaled in Kyoto in splendor, today's Hiraizumi has little left except two famous temples — and some famous haiku lamenting the loss penned here by Basho.

  • Stage 24: Dewagoe ( Naruko )

At this point Basho abandoned the original plan to head all the way north to Aomori and instead decided to head across the mountains. Naruko is now a popular hot spring resort.

  • Stage 25: Obanazawa
  • Stage 26: Ryushakuji (Yamadera, Yamagata )

The temple of Ryushakuji is quite literally carved out of the mountainside: hence the common name Yamadera , "Mountain Temple".

  • Stage 27: Oishida
  • Stage 28: Mogami River ( Yamagata )
  • Stages 29-30: Hagurosan and Gassan ( Dewa Sanzan )

The three holy mountains of Dewa Sanzan are the center of worship for the Shinto-Buddhist Shugendo sect and its mountain-climbing yamabushi ascetic monks. Note that Basho only visited Hagurosan and Gassan. He never made it to the third, Yudonosan.

  • Stage 31: Sakata
  • Stage 32: Kisagata
  • Stage 33: Echigo ( Niigata )

The province of Echigo is now Niigata prefecture.

  • Stage 34: Ichiburi
  • Stage 35: Kanazawa
  • Stage 36-37: Komatsu

In Komatsu, Basho visited Natadera , a famous temple still visited by many Japanese (but few foreign tourists).

  • Stage 38: Daishoji
  • Stage 39: Matsuoka
  • Stage 40: Fukui
  • Stage 41: Tsuruga

In Tsuruga, Basho visited the famous Kehi Shrine and stayed at Kanegasaki to observe the full moon. He wrote one of his haiku at Konzenji Temple at the foot of Kanegasaki about the temple's famous bell.

  • Stage 42: Ironohama
  • Stage 43: Ogaki - there is a small museum for the poet's long journey.

Stay safe [ edit ]

The roaming bands of Ainu bandits that Basho feared (but did not encounter) are long since gone. Now the riskiest parts of the trip are inclement weather and the mountain ascents.

Go next [ edit ]

The ending point is Ogaki , which is 30 minutes by rail from Nagoya , a Tokaido Shinkansen stop. Nagoya is home to the Chubu Centrair International Airport . Ogaki is also not so far from Kansai, and it is only a few hours back to Tokyo.

You might also wish to detour to Iga where Basho was born or Otsu on the shores of Lake Biwa , where Basho died in 1694. He is buried in that city at the small temple of Gichu-ji.

Haguro and Atsumi Hotspring, Murakami’s Jonenji Temple, and more in this course that spans three prefectures.

Kanmanji Temple

Matsuo Basho visited this Soto school of Buddhism temple on his “Oku no Hosomichi” journey in 1689 when he visited Kisakata. Near the main temple are stones with Basho’s haiku engraved into them, cherry blossom trees, statues of important figures, and more.

Access: 15 minutes walking from JR Kisakata Station Open hours: 8:00-17:00 Admission fee: 300 yen, High school students: 150 yen, Elementary students: 100 yen

Kujuku Island

Once admired as picturesque scenery along the ranks of Matsushima, it’s also known as Basho’s northernmost destination on his Oku no Hosomichi journey and was highly praised by the haiku poet. The Great Kisakata Earthquake in 1804 caused an uplift of land, changing the waters around the islands to dry land. Take a walk around the island, which was eventually filled with rice paddies and creates a unique island field scene that can’t be found anywhere else.

Kisakata Yuhi Sannemunoki

Sannemunoki is located along the natural monument Kisakata coastline, which inspired Basho’s famous poem line, “Kisagata rain lying asleep with wet flowers”. The inn’s hot spring comes from a colorless sulfur source and is said to give you silky smooth skin.

You can see the Sea of Japan from the large first floor bath, and Mt. Chokai from the third floor outlook bath. There’s also delicious food using fish from the Sea of Japan and vegetables taken from the foot of Mt. Chokai to be had.

Homma Museum

Basho wandered through Yamagata for 40 days and stayed 9 of those days in Sakata. There are many areas related to Basho and haiku engravings located within the city. The Homma family, known as the number one landowners in Japan, built this country villa in 1813 and opened it as a museum starting in 1947. There are many Homma books, antiques, and paintings from the family’s collection on display. In summer, Matsuo Basho’s rare works will be displayed (late July to August 10th). The “Kakubuen” garden is also a highlight of the museum.

Open every day from March to January

Hiyoriyama Park

There are Basho engraved haiku rocks and statues in the park famous for watching the sun set over the Sea of Japan.

Take a walk through the park while viewing Sakata’s prosperous history. You can find a 1:2 scale model of a Kitamaebune ship used long ago, Japan’s oldest wooden hexagon lighthouse, and more. Hiyoriyama Park is also a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring.

Sakatakaisen Market

The fact that Sakata is a port city means that you get to enjoy all sorts of delicious food from the Sea of Japan. Next to Sakata’s harbor is the Sakatakaisen Market where you can find fresh fish straight out of Shonai’s shores and lots of restaurants and eating spots.

On the second floor, you’ll find “Seafood Don and Tobishima”, which serves seafood rice bowls and other small dishes that satisfy your need for fresh sea food.

Address: 2-chome-5-10 Funabacho, Sakata, Yamagata 998-0036 Business hours: “1F Sugawara Sengyo”: 8:00-18:00, “1F Kuikoiya Wan”: 11:00-15:00, 17:30-21:00, “2F Seafood Don and Tobishima”: 7:00-19:00

Basho also visited the spiritually powerful Dewa Sanzan Mountains (Gassan, Haguro, Yudono). Japan’s greatest Grand Shrine, “Sanjin Gosaiden Shrine”, where the three gods of Dewa Sanzan are enshrined, is located at the top of the mountain.

The sacred feeling path to the summit includes the Five Storied Pagoda and the cedar avenue awarded three stars by the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

Access: (by bus) • 50 minutes using the Mt. Haguro bus from Tsuruoka city (get off at the final stop) • When using the stone steps up to the top of the mountain or when visiting the Haguro pagoda, use the same bus and get off at Zuishinmon

Atsumi Hot Spring

The area of Atsumi hot spring, with it’s soft, clear, and quiet waters, was another destination of Basho’s. From the warm waters to the delicious ingredients of the food, you’ll be delightfully overwhelmed by the warm-hearted care you’ll receive at the inns here.

The banks of the Atsumi River provide an excellent area to take a nature walk in every season with cherry blossoms in the spring, fishing in the summer, and migrating salmon in the fall. After checking into your inn, be sure to visit the Basho Memorial Stone on the path to Kumano Shrine.

Jonenji Temple

Jonenji Temple is a Jodo temple known for being visited by Basho. The walls of the main temple are a rare white plaster. The temple is designated as an important cultural property.

Address: 3-13 Teramachi, Murakami, Niigata 958-0849 Access: 5 minute drive from Murakami Station

For lunch, try “Izutsuya”, which is only a five minute walk from Jonenji Temple. It’s known as a pitstop on Matsu Basho’s journey and is designated as a national tangible cultural property.

Inside, well known restaurant Sennen Sake Kikkawa’s salted salmon is served, along with Iwafune koshihikari rice cooked in an earthenware pot. You can choose from seven course (1,950 yen), 10 course (2,900 yen) 13 course (3900 yen), 18 course (4,900 yen), and 21 course menus. *Prices don’t include tax.

10-foot-wide Florida 'skinny house' built out of spite. Here's what it costs, and a tour

Never underestimate spite as a motivating force.

Builder John Atkins and Ryan Wetherhold of Oceanside Real Estate decided to build a 15-foot-wide house on an empty 25-foot-wide lot in Jacksonville Beach, but they got some pushback from the neighbors. At a public hearing some of them, particularly a next-door neighbor who had been using the lot as a garden, persuaded the board of adjustment not to permit any more than local building codes allowed.

So the two men made a 10-foot-wide house instead.

"To be honest, the builder almost built this out of spite just because of that fact," Wetherhold told Business Insider . "'Oh, you don't think we can build, hold my beer.'"

The result, at 1952 Horn St. surrounded by homes ranging from $700,000 to over a million according to Zillow.com, was a stylish two-story cross between a tiny home, a trailer and one of New Orleans' shotgun houses.

The house was listed in March at $619,000 and gained some attention, but nothing compared to what happened after it was featured on Zillow Gone Wild .

🗣️ SKINNY HOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE Currently listed for only $619,000 in Jacksonville, Florida pic.twitter.com/R1wImKGibg — Zillow Gone Wild 🏡 (@zillowgonewild) April 18, 2024

Jax Beach skinny house: Developers squeeze in lots of style for unique Jacksonville Beach 'skinny house' on sale

How big is the 'skinny house' in Jacksonville Beach?

The "low maintenance, energy efficient" two-story home has 1,547 square feet of living space. The house itself was limited to 10' by 80', but it includes bump-outs similar to those used in mobile homes to add more room for a couch, dining room seating and beds.

The house has two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. And no HOA.

The lot is 25' by 140', just under a tenth of an acre, but there's room in the fenced backyard for a BBQ grill and a pool. The grass-pavered driveway leads to a single-car garage. Stormwater drains prevent runoff and erosion.

"It’s been called everything from a spaceship to the nicest RV ever made," Wetherhold told jacksonville.com

Why build such a skinny house?

When the area was platted in the Williams Coastal Heights neighborhood in the 1920s it was divided into narrow, 25-foot-wide lots which were then bought in groups to get enough for normal-sized homes.

Occasionally when this happens, some orphan lots get left behind. Atkins and Wetherhold decided to nab it.

"We purchased the lot from another builder/developer that does more high-end luxury homes," Wetherhold said. "John and I have developed on smaller lots in the past, so it appealed to us."

Such a narrow, tall building did require some special handling in a coastal, storm-prone area. The foundation is much larger than usual, with 40,000 pounds of concrete at each end to counteract hurricane-force winds, Atkins said.

Where is the skinny house in Jacksonville Beach?

The house is located at 1952 Horn St., in the Williams Coastal Heights neighborhood in Jacksonville Beach, a block north of South Beach Park and Sunshine Playground and just two blocks west of the beach.

What did Zillow Gone Wild say about the skinny house?

In April the wildly popular Zillow Gone Wild site spotted the listing.

"SKINNY HOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE," it said. "As you can see, it's glorious!!"

Zillow Gone Wild did a photo walkthrough and found the skinny house pleasing. "As you can see, it's glorious!!" Attention was given to the spacious feel and the length.

"Walk into the skinny house foyer and you can see all the way through the home," the description said. "I don’t care what the fung shui people say, seeing through your home is good. This doesn’t feel so skinny house either once you are inside."

Inside doesn’t feel as skinny house as you’d think pic.twitter.com/eGEkDE1LZK — Zillow Gone Wild 🏡 (@zillowgonewild) April 18, 2024

Zillow Gone Wild's post on X , formerly Twitter, has gotten over 881.6 thousand views and 2,000 likes.

"Damn, even houses are on Ozempic now," one commenter said .

"The number of views on  Zillow  in just the first few days was in the thousands, which is unusual; it's typically around 50 or so for most houses," Wetherhold said. "Once Zillow Gone Wild reached out, I knew it was going to go viral."

Taylor Swift Adds TTPD Songs (and Subtracts Others) from Eras Tour Setlist as European Leg Kicks Off in Paris

The singer's May 9 show marks her first since releasing 'The Tortured Poets Department' — see all the setlist changes

  • Taylor Swift resumed her Eras Tour in Paris on May 9
  • The concert marked her first since releasing her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department
  • She added songs from TTPD to the tour setlist, while removing a handful of other album tracks throughout the show

Taylor Swift is back and better than ever!

After a nearly two-month break from her historic Eras Tour , during which she released her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , the singer has taken the stage once again, and this time, she’s in Europe.

The pop star, 34, took the stage at Paris La Défense Arena in France on May 9 to perform her career-spanning set list — which has been edited to make room for TTPD tracks, meaning some others have been cut (at least for now). New outfits, set pieces and choreography were also present.

Fans realized they were in for a fresh Eras Tour experience when the concert's introduction video was changed to include a TTPD section of the Lover house representing each of Swift's eras.

As per usual, she opened the show Thursday with the Lover section — but skipped "The Archer." From there, the Grammy winner went into Fearless followed by Red , performing the sections in a different order than during the previous tour legs. Another nod to the setlist switch-ups? Swift sported a t-shirt that read, "This Is Not Taylor's Version," while performing "22."

Kevin Mazur/Getty

Next came the Speak Now section, and she removed "Long Live," which was initially added following the July 2023 release of the album's rerecorded Taylor's Version .

The Reputation segment then arrived, followed by a combined Folklore and Evermore section with "The 1," "The Last Great American Dynasty," "Tolerate It" and "'Tis the Damn Season" getting cut.

"I have always talked about Folklore and Evermore as sister albums," explained Swift on stage. "On the Eras Tour, we have reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter, you can call it 'Folkmore,' 'Everlore,' you can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' really loud."

The 1989 section came afterwards, and then The Tortured Poets Department . The section highlighting Swift's latest album featured "But Daddy I Love Him," "So High School," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me," "Down Bad," "Fortnight," "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" and "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart."

Swift then performed two surprise songs: "Paris" from Midnights and "loml" from TTPD .

The show concluded with the Midnights section, with all seven tracks from previous shows remaining in the setlist.

Since Swift's last round of Eras Tour shows in Singapore in March — which the pop star dubbed an “unforgettable way to end this leg of the tour” — she has kept busy, attending Coachella , enjoying date nights with boyfriend Travis Kelce and, of course, releasing her latest album.

The ”Florida!!!” singer will play three more shows at the Paris La Défense Arena on May 10, 11 and 12 before heading to the rest of her May tour stops, which include Stockholm, Lisbon and Madrid.

Then, the Eras Tour’s European leg will continue, returning to France (Lyon this time!) and hitting the U.K. before heading to Dublin in late June.

Swift will continue performing in Europe throughout the summer before wrapping in London in August and heading back to North America for a slew of shows in Toronto and, finally, Vancouver.

Live from Paris: Taylor Swift adds 'Tortured Poets' songs to Eras Tour in France

PARIS, France — The Chairman jump-started her tour after a two-month hiatus, and anticipation was high over whether Taylor Swift would incorporate her 11th era album into the Eras Tour set at La Défense Arena on Thursday.

She did and then some.

Swift extended the set list by one track to land at 46 songs. But many changes were made along the way. She added a new era for "The Tortured Poets Department," cut a handful of songs and rearranged most of the eras including combining the sets for "Folklore" and "Evermore."

She also debuted a number of new outfits along the way.

Delivering all the updates were Bryan West, the USA TODAY Network's full-time Taylor Swift reporter, from inside La Défense Arena in Paris, with Swiftie and trending reporter Anthony Robledo assisting from his desk.

'Midnights' set follows secret songs

Swift stuck to her original set list for the "Midnights" era by singing "Lavender Haze," "Anti-Hero" and "Midnight Rain." She ended the night with a triumphant rendition of "Karma" as usual.

'loml' is second secret song

Fans got one more taste of "The Tortured Poets Department" when Swift played the heartbreaking song "loml" on the piano during her secret set.

'Paris' is a secret song, of course

Swift started her secret set with "Paris," a bonus song from her "Midnights" album.

'Tortured Poets' set list

Swift played these songs from her newest album:

  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
  • "So High School"
  • "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me"
  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"
  • "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart"

New 'Tortured Poets' set is here

Toward the end of her show, Swift officially launched the long-awaited “The Tortured Poets Department” section of the tour after the 1989 era.

Swift performed the track “But Daddy I Love Him” off the April 19 album for her ecstatic fans while wearing a new beige dress with cursive letters.

A road spiraled down the catwalk in an animation to initiate the era. The background animation showed a deserted road while large cages animated and fell on the road.

“Oh my god you should see your faces,” she sang.

She quickly segued into a brief moment of “So High School,” the beloved track speculated to be about her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She quickly performed the powerhouse anthem “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me.”

Swift switched to “Down Bad” before seamlessly transitioning into the lead single “Fortnight.” Stage production recreated an asylum that resembled the music video for the song with Post Malone, recorded harmony played concluding the song.

Dancers entered the stage in a marching band style format playing drums as she performed the wrath-fueled song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” Jan Ravnik and Kameron Saunders then revived Swift in a jazzy skit to set up “I Can Do With A Broken Heart,” where she debuted another new outfit.

“The End” text displayed wrapping up the era that’s likely here to stay. Other beloved tracks like “Guilty As Sin” and “Florida!” did not make the cut.

New '1989' outfit

Swift never goes out of Style. During her “1989” set, she debuted a new, sequined outfit of blue and pink. Her sparkly shoes matched with a different colored heel on each. For the bridge of “Blank Space,” the crowd started chanting in Sydney, Australia, “Syd-ney” as a nod to the 1989 World Tour concert movie where Swift would chant the name of the city she was in after hitting a pole with a club two times. Singapore followed the chant and Taylor Nation tweeted they want every city to incorporate the fan-fueled chant. In Paris, thousands chanted “Par-ee,” the French way to say the capital city.

Swift made no cuts to the "1989" set.

Four songs cut from 'Folklore' and 'Evermore'

The new set list cut four tracks from the "Folklore" and "Evermore" eras:

  • "'Tis the Damn Season"
  • "Tolerate It"
  • "The Last Great American Dynasty"

The combined set included eight songs altogether and wrapped up with "Willow."

'Folkmore' set debuts

Swift revealed she merged the 2020 pandemic albums “Folklore” and “Evermore” into one section. She told fans she wrote “Folklore” to represent spring and summer with “Evermore” representing fall and winter in what she always considered sister albums.

“On the Eras Tour we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter,” she said. “You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing ‘Champagne Problems’ with me.”

'Folklore' set: 'Cardigan' makes the cut

Many fans had speculated "Cardigan" would be cut from the set list. But Swift actually moved it to the top of the "Folklore" set.

Up next: 'Reputation'

Swift kicked off her fifth set with "Ready for It?"

Another surprise: 'Speak Now' era comes fourth

Swift updated her "Speak Now" set with an intro dance featuring Raphael Thomas and eight other dancers wearing flowy purple dresses. She then sang "Enchanted."

Fan favorite track "Long Live" was cut from the set list.

Order of eras changed

After a fairly routine "Fearless" set, Swift altered her concert by including the “Red” era third instead of the expected “Evermore” set. Previously, "Red" came fifth.

With a new shirt that read “This Is Not Taylor’s Version,” the singer performed "22" and showed her audience that they needed to leave any expectations at home.

The relocated "Red" set included the same four songs: "22," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)."

Beflore playing “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” Swift talked about bringing all of her favorite memories to France. She did her 2019 “Lover” live show here but hadn’t brought a tour to the country since the Speak Now World Tour 13 years ago.“I cannot thank you enough. I’m so moved," she said.

Follow along with set list changes here .

First set list change

Swift cut "The Archer" from her "Lover" set before beginning her "Fearless" set in a silver and black minidress as opposed to her classic gold one. A graphic showed her "Lover" house with a new addition in the attic for "The Tortured Poets Department." Her "Fearless" set remained the same with "Fearless," "You Belong With Me" and "Love Story."

'Je m'appelle Taylor'

In her monologue before playing the song "Lover," Swift said the night would span 18 years of music. Previously, the concert covered 16 years. Get ready for a "The Tortured Poets Department" addition some time tonight.

She confirmed the tour would still go era by era, and also spoke about how Paramore is a band she idolized since she was a teenager. She ended with some French: "Je m'appelle Taylor."

First new outfit

Swift debuted a new, orange bodysuit and jacket for the "Lover" set.

Snippet of 'Tortured Poets' in intro

A snippet of the song "The Tortured Poets Department" was included in the intro music Swift kicks the concert off with. Is she foreshadowing other changes ahead? It seems likely.

Taylor Swift takes the stage

Swift took the stage about 8 p.m. in Paris (2 p.m. ET) to relaunch her Eras Tour in Europe. She kicked it off with a countdown clock and the Lesley Gore song "You Don't Own Me" as usual. Then she began her "Lover" set with "Miss Americana."

Paramore covers Blondie, Talking Heads in Paris set list

At the Paris show Thursday, Paramore energized fans with eight tracks including their cover off the upcoming “Stop Making Sense” tribute album out May 17 featuring artists like Miley Cyrus and Lorde.

Debuting a blond mullet, lead singer Hayley Williams encouraged fans to dance without fear of judgment ahead of Swift’s performance.

“Enjoy your time with Miss Taylor, we will see you next time,” Williams said.

Paramore's set list included:

  • "Hard Times"
  • "Burning Down the House" (Talking Heads cover)
  • "Caught in the Middle"
  • “Brick by Boring Brick”
  • “The Only Exception”
  • “That’s What You Get”
  • “Ain't It Fun”
  • “This Is Why”

Paramore begins their set

At about 6:45 p.m. in Paris (12:45 p.m. ET), Paramore began their set, officially restarting the second year of the historic Eras Tour. Lead singer Hayley Williams sported a new, blond mullet hairdo.

Paramore opens European leg of Eras Tour

The American rock band is joining Swift on her European leg of 51 shows. Paramore also opened the show for two nights in Glendale, Arizona, in 2023. Their setlist then included nine songs:

  • "This Is Why"
  • "That’s What You Get"
  • "The Only Exception"
  • "Still Into You"
  • "Rose-Colored Boy"
  • "Misery Business"
  • "Ain’t It Fun"

Where to watch the Eras Tour livestreams

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. Livestream Queen Tess Bohne has spearheaded the "Great War" to find fans going live on social media and broadcasting a custom show to tens of thousands of fans almost every night on her account @tessdear .

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the 3-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app also sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has had an acoustic set she customizes every stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mash-ups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

'World's largest bounce house': Big Bounce America 2024 tour coming to Greece park

Get ready to jump Rochester. The Big Bounce America 2024 tour , home to the World's Largest Bounce House, is on its way.

From Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2, you can experience the world's largest touring inflatable event with its seven massive inflatable attractions at Grace and Truth Sports Park in Greece.

Produced by XL Event Lab, the massive inflatable event is said to have gotten "a whole lot bigger, better and bouncier for 2024!"

Here are some inflatables you can expect to see:

The World's Largest Bounce House

This inflatable goliath now covers an area of over 24,000 square feet and stands 32 feet tall at its highest point. Inside it, you'll find giant slides, ball pits, climbing towers, basketball hoops, and a custom-built stage where the resident DJ will play music and games tailored to each age group. Sessions will be organized by age, ranging from tiny tots to adult-only sessions, so people of all ages are welcome to experience this massive bounce house.

Brand new for 2024, this inflatable is part bouncer and part foam party. Upon entering, this inflatable is said to be like jumping into a deep-sea world filled with colorful ocean creatures, colossal foam cannons and Live DJs spinning from a huge pufferfish stage. Get ready to jump, dance and sing around its giant Octupus's tentacles.

This customized sports arena will be filled with goals, nets, hoops and balls of every size. Compete against family and friends by racing up the climbing tower or taking them on in the ‘battle zone’ to see who can stay on their podium the longest.

If you're looking for a Ninja Warrior type of bounce house, this one is for you. The Giant is over 900 ft. long and includes 50 different obstacles to overcome as you make your way through the course to the grand finale monster slide.

Spreading across three different inflatables, the airSpace is said to be a unique, space-themed wonderland filled with friendly aliens, spaceships, moon craters and more. This immersive inflatable has a huge 5-lane slide, a 25 ft. tall alien at the center of three bottomless ball pits and a giant spaceman jumping around the moon space.

All the looks Meghan Markle wore on her trip to Nigeria, ranked

  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Nigeria over the weekend.
  • Meghan wore a variety of ensembles throughout the trip.
  • Her best looks from the tour were colorful dresses.

Insider Today

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just wrapped up a trip to Nigeria.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent several days in the country, which is interested in hosting the Invictus Games, according to CBS News . The Invictus Games celebrated 10 years since its founding on Wednesday.

Meghan wore an assortment of quietly luxurious outfits during the tour, many of them brightly colored.

Take a look at the looks Meghan wore in Nigeria, ranked from least to most stylish.

Meghan's white dress for a Nigeria Unconquered reception had a simple silhouette.

Meghan attended the reception in a St. Agni column dress , available for preorder at $409.

The dress featured a strapless neckline, and it subtly hugged her figure before flowing to the floor.

She also accessorized the look with a cross pendant that originally belonged to Princess Diana, as People reported .

The Duchess of Sussex popped in yellow for a visit to the State Governor House in Lagos.

Meghan rewore the Carolina Herrera dress she donned in the photo she and Prince Harry used to announce her pregnancy with Lilibet in 2021.

The sleeveless column dress featured a high neckline, and it draped loosely around the duchess.

Meghan's dress for a charity polo match featured a subtle, sparkly pattern.

Johanna Oritz's Summer Counts Dress , a $1,995 piece that's now sold out, had a hint of glamour thanks to the coordinating scarf that could be added to its halter neckline. Meghan wore it draped over her shoulders.

The floor-length dress was covered in a floral pattern and featured a plunging neckline and ruching at the waist.

Meghan added oversized Heidi Merrick sunglasses to the look.

She opted for a tailored pantsuit to visit the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.

Altuzarra designed Meghan's white suit, which featured a blazer with a single button and wide-legged pants.

She paired the suit with a white top, gold pumps, and gold jewelry, as well as a floral corsage.

The peach dress Meghan wore to visit Lightway Academy stood out with architectural detailing.

Heidi Merrick has become a go-to designer for Meghan, so it's no surprise she chose the brand's blush Windsor Gown for the Nigeria tour.

The maxi dress has a high neckline and cinches at both the waist and thigh, creating a casual take on a dropped waist. The back features cutouts on the sides and in the center of the dress, giving it a modern edge.

The sold-out dress retails for $1,350 and has a similar feel to other quiet luxury looks Meghan has worn recently.

She attended a basketball game in Lagos wearing a traditional Nigerian skirt.

hoso tour

Meghan's Nigerian skirt was the star of her outfit, with a blue striped pattern and a tie fastened at her waist. The skirt was gifted to her during her trip, according to People .

She paired the skirt with a Carolina Herrera blouse with the sleeves folded up, gold Burberry pumps, and Heidi Merrick sunglasses.

The look was both casual and sophisticated.

Meghan's dress for a volleyball match had a subtle cutout and a daring slit.

hoso tour

The Duchess of Sussex arrived at the match in a $2,850 Johanna Oritz dress.

A dark-green leafy pattern covered the dress, which had a sweetheart neckline and hit Meghan at the ankle. A diamond-shaped cutout sat in the center of the bodice, framed by textured spaghetti straps.

A thigh-high slit completed the beachy feel of the dress, which Meghan wore with Heidi Merrick sunglasses and black Emme Parsons sandals.

Ruffles on the hem of Meghan's red dress for a Women in Leadership panel made it stand out.

hoso tour

Meghan's $275 midi dress was made by Orire, a Nigerian designer.

The red garment's scooped neckline featured spaghetti straps and a slightly cinched waist.

The hem of the dress was lined with large ruffles, adding a touch of glamour to the simple silhouette. Nude heels from Aquazzura completed the look.

According to InStyle , Meghan said during the panel that she donned the colorful dress at the encouragement of people she met in Nigeria.

"I am just flattered and honored and inspired," she said. "It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived, and I very quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color so I can fit in with all of you in your incredible fashion!"
