From Morocco to Miami and Santa Barbara to San Sebastián,  Mediterranean home design encompasses a variety of styles steeped and history and influences. One thing is certain: It's a style that endures and continues to gain fans throughout the years. With careful planning and a skilled architect, modern Mediterranean-style homes can combine features that blend the best of old world style with modern lifestyles.

Mediterranean architecture became popular in the early 20th century in places like Southern California, Texas, and Florida: areas that enjoy warm climates similar to the countries and cities along the Mediterranean Sea. While styles vary they share an emphasis on the home as a retreat and sanctuary and offer easy access to the outdoors via wide doors and windows, terraces, atriums, and patios. Notable architects who used Mediterranean influences in their designs include Bertram Goodhue, George Kaufmann, Julia Morgan, and Wallace Neff.

Forms of Mediterranean architecture include:

  • Spanish Colonial and Spanish Colonial Revival
  • Mediterranean Revival
  • Italian Villa
  • Mission Revival
  • Neo-Mediterranean, which is also known as Spanish style
  • Spanish Eclectic

Key features of Mediterranean home design include:

  • A connection and easy transition between indoors and outdoors
  • Spaciousness created by high-beamed ceilings and archways
  • Eclectic: mixing old styles with modern tastes
  • Red-tile roofs
  • Arches above doors, windows, and porches or balconies
  • Rough-hewn wood or carved doors
  • Ceramic tile
  • Wrought-iron ( not rod iron) grillwork and railings
  • An emphasis on natural materials
  • Outdoor spaces, like patios, courtyards, balconies, terraces, etc.
  • Outdoor water features : fountains, ponds, pools, etc.

Join us for an international tour of magnificent Mediterranean homes, from petite properties to expansive estates.

Spanish-Style Flair

Inspired by Spanish Revival architecture of the early 20th century, this home designed by  CW Architecture  of Scottsdale, Arizona, was built in 2011. Among the one-story home's Mediterranean features are smooth stucco, Cantera stone , clay tile accents, reclaimed wooden doors, and a Spanish style entry courtyard .

Estate with a Private Winery

On 12 acres in Northern California's Los Altos hills is a Mediterranean home with a private winery and four acres of vineyards. Designed by Noel Cross Architects , the idea for this structure was influenced by buildings of Italy's Tuscany region. The architects imported salvaged clay barrel tiles from Europe for the winery's roof and used integral color plaster for exterior and interior walls. Features that are distinctly Tuscan include minimal eave overhangs, vertically proportioned window and door openings, the plaster walls, clay roof, and arched loggia .

Montecito Mediterranean

In the beautiful seaside town of Montecito, near Santa Barbara, the owners of a Spanish Colonial Revival enlisted the help of  Thompson Naylor Architects to remodel an existing patio. Teaming with the interior designer and landscape architect, the firm designed a roofed enclosure and integrated the patio with a private pool and garden.

Tuscan Home in the Rockies

Far from the Mediterranean or at least Mediterranean climates,  Centre Sky Architecture  designs and builds ranches, resorts, and custom homes in the Rocky Mountains. A Tuscan-inspired home might be the last thing you'd expect in a mountain town, but that affinity for working with natural materials translates well with this rustic, modern Mediterranean. This 4,500 square-foot home is surrounded by meadows of wildflowers. On the outside, rich and varied materials include recycled, old planking, stone, slate roofing and stucco, and copper to add a rich texture.

Carmel Valley Hacienda

All but destroyed in a previous remodeling attempt, architect Tom Meaney was challenged with restoring and rethinking a 1920s estate. Most of the interior needed to be removed and reconfigured to both reflect the original style of the house and incorporate features and updates to bring it current with contemporary lifestyles. Working with landscape architect Joni Janecki and Associates and contractor Rocky Maguire , Meaney built a stunning hacienda near Monterey, California, with a large courtyard that is a main feature.

Spanish/Mediterranean features include handmade roof tiles, brushed cedar windows, and hand-painted ceramic tiles.

El Rancho in Austin, Texas

Located in the Austin, Texas, suburb of Georgetown, this 7,000 square-foot estate is thoroughly modern but uses Mediterranean materials like rough stone, smooth plaster, terra cotta, and features like fountains , arches, and a tile roof. The RJSB Ranch was a joint project of builder  Steve Richmond Fine Homes  and  J. Bryant Boyd Architecture .

Montecito Mediterranean Home

A mecca for Mediterranean style homes, this estate in the California coastal town of Montecito had a large, thirsty lawn that needed to be replaced with something more drought tolerant .  Montecito Landscape  created a gravel patio edged with columnar Italian cypress trees . Other indigenous plants that surround the central pond, fountain, and estate include California natives like rosemary, sages, lavender, and marina strawberry tree ( Arbutus 'Marina').

Spanish Revival Home

A two-story Spanish revival home in Parkland, Florida, needed continuity among separate sections of its front yard. With a focus on the front entrance,  Dreamscapes by Zury  combined various plants and rocks to draw the eye both up and outward to the edges of the property. Dreamscapes brought elements together by creating a pattern in the rock gardens that allows the landscape to flow from one area to the other.

Using plants native to the region, Dreamscapes' goal was to enhance the home's Mediterranean beauty and not have any landscape features overshadow it. e only want to enhance the beauty of the home, not overshadow it. Tall, slim cypress trees do not block features like the home's arched windows and doors, while curving palm trees repeat the shapes.

Orange County Mission Influence

Most of the homes in California's Orange County were built during the housing boom after World War II. Since the mid 1960s architectural styles of the region have often been influenced by the nearby missions (like San Juan Capistrano) and earlier Spanish Colonial Revival buildings of the area. Conceived by  Glover + Graham Design Collective  this home and landscape combine classic Mediterranean details that make it look like a very well-maintained older home with some subtle, more modern tweaks.

Textural Mediterranean Home Masterpiece

A multi-level Mediterranean house features a rough-stone facade, iron grillwork, and red-tile roofing. To echo that old world look,  Ancient Surfaces  used authentic limestone in the courtyard, which reflects the color and textures found throughout the home.

A 1930s Spanish Colonial

A 1930s-built one-story Spanish Colonial home in LA's Mar Vista area received a smart and period-appropriate update by owners and architects  Hsu McCullough . Among the upgrades: repurposed rustic lumber, vintage steel windows, and carved-wood doors. The architects also added a private outdoor living spade that include a fire pit and raised decks.

Mediterranean Revival Bungalow

Sarasota, Florida, is famous for its post-World War II architecture, known as Sarasota Modern. This petite bungalow in downtown Sarasota's Burns Court district was built in the mid 1920s by architect Thomas Reed Martin. Working with interior designer Ellen Hanson ,  Nautilus Homes  patched and refinished flooring, reconfigured the bungalow's roof, replaced all windows. Exterior walls were built varying levels to offer privacy in some areas, yet allow passersby to view the bungalow's clean design and smooth, off-white stucco.

The project is a standout for its simplicity, use of materials that are distinctly Mediterranean Revival, and retaining the home's architectural and historical integrity. Heavy or excessive ornamentation would have dwarfed the home. Instead, we see hints of its origins in the terra cotta roof tile, ceramic tile porch, simple iron handrail, and the Moorish/Moroccan detail above the windows and doors.

A Garden Inspired by a Honeymoon

An enclosed courtyard garden is a place to relax and provides a calming entry to a 1920s-era house in LA's Hancock Park neighborhood. To achieve this, Naomi Sanders Landscape Design had a central ornamental pear tree pruned for a more sculptural effect. Sanders chose a minimal planting pallet to emphasize texture, using shades of green, white, red, dark purple, and even black. Hardscape design connects with the homeowners' honeymoon: it reminds them of a path they took on a romantic walk to a restaurant in Spain.

The texture and color of the concrete was custom matched to the home's exterior and architectural elements. Mediterranean garden plants include pittosporum , pomegranate , dianella, liriope, privet , azalea , and Japanese maple 'Bloodgood'.

Miami Beach Mediterranean Modern

Built in 1934 for the Hoover family of Hoover vacuum fame, this Mediterranean Modern home in Miami features classic architectural elements like stucco walls, red-tile roofing, arched windows and doors, wrought-iron grillwork, and brick outdoor surfaces.  Margaux Interiors  worked with furnishings collected by the owner during her worldwide travels. The house is 5,000 square feet, has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and lots of breathtaking gardens.

Croatian Mediterranean Home

In the small Croatian village of Bicine is a modern interpretation of Spanish Colonial architecture known as Hirundo Rustica. Designed by Rosa Gres , the multi-family house (which is rented out for travelers), features rugged stonework, a terra cotta roof, patios with two swimming pools, courtyards , walkways, water features, saunas, and a children's play area.

Mediterranean Landscaping

A home and guest cottage in San Rafael, California, received a new driveway and landscaping that complement its classic California-Mediterranean architecture. Nearly half of the driveway paving was removed; in its place is flagstone paving and decomposed granite (DG). Designed by  Simmonds & Associates , the garden and planters feature natives that harmonize with the house.

Spanish Eclectic Modern

Parkland Estates in Tampa, Florida, is an upscale neighborhood that features both new and old homes in a variety of architectural styles. This one is considered Spanish Eclectic Modern, and Hittmeier Design Consultants oversaw updates that included a swim-up bar, stairs, awnings, and grillwork.

Vizcaya is a Mediterranean Revival-style villa with Baroque elements that was once the home of businessman James Deering. The estate currently consists of 43 acres, but was previously located on an impressive 180 acres. It took eight years and $15 million to build the villa, and another year to complete the Italian Renaissance-style gardens and Vizcaya Village, which consists of 11 buildings across 12 acres, including greenhouses, fields, staff quarters, a garage, barns, and workshops.

Expect to see Old Masters paintings, decorative arts, and European sculptures in this former residence turned art museum. The Frick Collection is located on Fifth Avenue and is one of the last remaining Gilded Age mansions in New York City. At just 26 years old, future President Thomas Jefferson inherited a plantation in rural Virginia. An architecture enthusiast, Jefferson himself devised a combination of Neoclassical and Palladian architecture for the estate that would come to be known as Monticello. It is now a National Historic Landmark, and, along with the University of Virginia—which was also one of Jefferson’s designs—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If Monticello looks familiar to you, it’s probably because it’s on the reserve side of the nickel.

Frida Kahlo Museum, Mexico City, Mexico

General Views Of Mexico 2019

In 1958, just four years after Frida Kahlo’s death, her eye-catching, bright blue house in Mexico City became a museum. Not only was Frida Kahlo born and raised in this historic home, it was also where she lived with her husband and fellow painter, Diego Rivera, and later, where she passed away. Diego Rivera donated the house in 1957 so that it could be turned into a museum in honor of his late wife. Kahlo’s house has since been operating as both a historic house museum and an art museum for over 60 years, and it is now the most visited museum in Coyoacán. Artworks by both Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are on display in the home.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, MA

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston

The onetime home of Isabella Stewart Gardner was built in 1903 and is a designated Boston Landmark. As is evident when looking at the home's Instagramable courtyard, the building was inspired by a 15th-century Venetian palace. Isabella Stewart Gardner once said that she wanted her extensive art collection to be exhibited “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever.” Well, so far, so good! The museum is home to American, Asian, and European art, including paintings, tapestries, sculptures, and decorative arts.

Lyndhurst Mansion, Tarrytown, NY

USA - New York - Lyndhurst Estate

This spooky Gothic Revival mansion, built in 1838, was once the home of railroad tycoon Jay Gould. It sits on 67 acres and overlooks the Hudson River. The National Historic Landmark home was used as a filming location for The Blacklist, Project Runway, House of Dark Shadows, and Night of Dark Shadows, to name a few. Former owner Jay Gould had a 243-foot yacht built so that he didn’t have to take the nearby railroad built by his archnemesis, Cornelius Vanderbilt. Talk about rich people problems...

Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon, VA

Estate, Property, House, Natural landscape, Home, Building, Tree, Cottage, Manor house, Mansion,

Mount Vernon began as a one-and-a-half story home built by George Washington’s father, Augustine, in 1734. It went on to become the plantation of George and Martha Washington, the first President and First Lady of the United States of America. The architectural style of the home is described as loose Palladian, which is a European style inspired by Ancient Greek and Roman structures. Mount Vernon was expanded twice during George Washington’s lifetime, in the late 1750s and in the 1770s, and it was his home until his death in 1799. In 1858, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association acquired the historic home and saved it from ruin by restoring it.

Events held at the home have included appearances by fellow novelists Judy Blume, Stephen King, and John Grisham.

Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England

Landmark, Palace, Architecture, Classical architecture, Building, Sky, Château, City, Stately home, Cloud,

To end this list with a bang, look no further than Blenheim Palace, the former home of Consuelo Vanderbilt and her husband, the ninth Duke of Marlborough. It was the $2.5 million dowry of Consuelo’s father, William Kissam Vanderbilt—which translates to $76.8 million today—that made the restoration of this historic palace possible. Blenheim Palace has been used as a filming location for a variety of films, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Gulliver's Travels, Cinderella, Spectre, Orlando, Transformers: The Last Knight, Dolittle , and Hamlet . It was also the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.

20 Stunning Mediterranean Mansions

mediterranean mansion tour

Mediterranean architecture is a unique look that combines the look and architectural elements of several Mediterranean countries. Some of the biggest influences have come from Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Over time, countries from all over the Mediterranean region have all contributed elements of the style that influence our take on the style. Today, Greece, France, even the Balkans, Turkey, Morocco, and even Algeria inspire the style that are often seen in the states with a strong Spanish history, such as California and Florida.

Some of the key elements often seen on these styles of homes include, arches, red tiled roofs, and rough or rugged looking plaster that was made to appear like plastered adobe. Other details might include decorative carvings and big, heavy doors, terra-cotta floors, and stucco walls. Many people like the Mediterranean look of a home.

There is something mysterious and intriguing about the design and gives you a feeling that you have stepped back in time to another place an era. Houses of any size can be built using the Mediterranean design, however, large homes and mansions are some of the most common to see, and some of the most impressive.

If you love the Tuscan, Southwestern, Moroccan or Spanish Mediterranean look, you can create the same design styles for your home. Here are some tips.

Architectural details for Mediterranean homes

When you see a Mediterranean style home, there are many similarities among the homes in architectural details. Depending on your personal taste, your preferences, your budget and builder, certain details will vary, however, here are some common features to see on any Mediterranean style home:

Balconies with arched windows and doors, stucco exteriors, terra-cotta tiles, stately columns, wrought iron gates, brick and wood shingles, stone, a low-pitched tile roof, solid antique wood door with knocker, courtyard, patio or lanai. Warm browns, golds and yellows, cream, terra-cotta, and shades of reds or rust, are common colors to see the exterior painted.

Landscape is as equally important to keep in synch with the style of the home. You will want to choose plants and foliage that go with the Mediterranean look. Water fountains, walkway lighting, garden areas of walkouts and patios, and gravel walks are ways to give your yard a touch of class and Mediterranean style.

Interior details

A Mediterranean home doesn’t stop at the front door. Keep the theme rolling on into the house and here are a few ideas on how to bring this style inside, too. Wrought iron isn’t just for outdoors, it is often used inside a Mediterranean style home, too.

It can be used as stairwell railing, in chandeliers and sconces, or other various areas in the home. High ceilings with rustic wood beams are popular in this style home, along with bright kilim textiles.

Wood burning stoves are a great addition, especially in an old rustic kitchen décor. For a textured look on the walls , layers of glaze and paint can be hand-rubbed onto plaster as well as sand-textured walls to give depth to the walls, making it appear old and old-world. Hardwood flooring or terra-cotta or Mosaic designed tiles on floors, counters, and in bathrooms are both in-tune with this style of home.

Warm, neutral colors that echo earth and sea, are the most common colors seen inside a Mediterranean home. They flow nicely with the theme.

Accessories

Don’t forget about accessorizing your home. The accessories inside your home help complete the look. Choose accessories that have a sense of old world style; Filigree light fixtures, a wrought iron fireplace screen, or place a couple bronze urns on a shelf or mantel, as an example. Painted ceramics, glazed vases, rustic candleholders, among other pieces, can really add to your Mediterranean theme.

What travelers say about their Mediterranean trips

Travel tips for tours to the mediterranean.

Visit a local vineyard.  Many of the world’s best wines are produced in the Mediterranean. Travelers on our Mediterranean tours will visit vineyards and wineries in Italy and Greece to learn how grapes are grown, harvested, and transformed into world-class wines.

Explore ancient ruins.  The Mediterranean is home to some of the world’s most important ancient ruins, from the Parthenon in Athens to the Colosseum in Rome. On our Mediterranean trips, travelers can get a chance to see what life was like as early civilizations developed.

See why traveler Donna says ancient ruins are among her top 10 reasons to visit the Mediterranean  →

Go island-hopping.  The Mediterranean is studded with postcard-worthy islands, and no two are exactly alike. Our Mediterranean tours offer the chance to hop from Ischia to Capri in Italy. In Greece, travelers can hopscotch between Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and other dreamy island gems.

The Mediterranean is a year-round destination, but here are a few things to keep in mind when considering going on a trip to the Mediterranean.

Peak season in the Mediterranean falls during June, July, and August, when temperatures are at their warmest and most beach-friendly. This is also peak travel season in the region, so travelers on Mediterranean vacations during this time are likely to encounter larger crowds.

In shoulder season, which falls during April and May, temperatures are pleasant and crowds are significantly thinner, making it the best time to visit the Mediterranean for travelers who prefer calm and quiet.

In fall and winter, crowds all but disappear, as do peak-season prices on everything from food to souvenirs. Travelers who visit the Mediterranean in winter can enjoy holiday festivals, food, music, and decorations throughout the region.

The Mediterranean is home to more cultural, architectural, and natural treasures than we can count. Here are a few of the highlights you can experience on our Mediterranean tours.

  • The Parthenon.  Perched atop the Acropolis in Athens, this iconic marble temple was built between 447 and 432 B.C., during the height of the ancient Greek Empire. Travelers who visit Greece on trips like our  Italy & Greece tour  can see it up close during a guided tour.
  • The Greek Islands.  With their laid-back beaches, charming villages, friendly locals, and distinctive architecture, it’s no wonder the Greek Islands are a popular vacation spot for travelers from around the world. Want to visit several on a single trip? Our Mediterranean vacation packages make it easy.
  • Cinque Terre.  These five, traffic-free fishing villages in the Italian region of Liguria perch along a six-mile stretch of the Italian Riviera and are linked together by scenic footpaths. Each village is packed with pastel-hued homes and offers travelers who book Mediterranean tour packages a distinctly different, but decidedly relaxed, vibe.
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia.  Overlooking the azure Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. Visitors who travel to the Mediterranean in the summertime can enjoy its sparkling beaches, as well as boat rides along its dramatic coast.
  • Venice.  Arguably one of the most romantic cities in the world, Venice is built across 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea and is known for its network of canals. Travelers who book Mediterranean travel packages that include Venice can explore the city’s canals on a gondola ride, and visit other major landmarks, such as St. Mark’s Square.

  • Comfortable walking shoes.  No matter which of our Mediterranean tours you choose, be sure to bring sturdy shoes with a good grip. They’ll keep your feet and ankles happy while walking on cobblestones, uneven streets, hiking paths, and other surfaces.
  • A day bag.  Keep your water, wallet, sunglasses, extra layers, and other essentials handy in a small backpack, crossbody, or tote.
  • A shawl, wrap, or cardigan.  A light layer will add a touch of extra warmth during outdoor dinners by the water, and protect your shoulders from the sun during the daytime.
  • A good camera.  And an extra memory card or two to capture the Mediterranean’s natural, architectural, and cultural treasures.
  • Sun protection.  Think brimmed hats, sunglasses, and SPF for any time spent outside, especially during walking tours on sunny days.
  • A swimsuit and sandals.   Because when you spot the crystal-clear waters that lap at the Greek Islands’ beaches, you won’t be able to resist getting in.
  • Light, loose clothing.  If you plan to visit the Mediterranean in the summertime, when temperatures can be hot, pack lightweight, loose clothing that will help keep you comfortable and cool.
  • Fresh seafood.  Plucked straight from the Mediterranean Sea, local seafood, like anchovies, mussels, and other shellfish, is as fresh as it gets, making it a must-try when visiting the Mediterranean. Try it prepared simply (a squeeze of lemon and little else) or cooked into a filling pasta dish.
  • Kopanisti.  Thick, creamy, and with a peppery flavor, this spreadable sheep’s-milk cheese is often served with bread as a starter on the Greek island of Mykonos.
  • All the fresh fruit.  Thanks to the Mediterranean’s mild climate, a variety of fruits grow in the region are far superior in quality to those we often find in grocery stores. Stop at a local market to taste whatever’s in season. If you like olives, be sure to get your fill when you visit the Mediterranean.
  • Pesto.  The Ligurian Coast is famous for this basil-and-oil delicacy, making it a must-try when you visit Italy’s Cinque Terre.

Although the Mediterranean sees plenty of sunshine and warm weather in the spring, summer, and fall, winters here can be on the cool side. Be sure to check weather forecasts before you travel to the Mediterranean so you can pack accordingly.

With “her signature warmth and Southern charm” ( E! Online ),  the  New York Times  bestselling author of  The Summer of Songbirds  and the Peachtree Bluff series presents a tender and touching novel about a young woman who discovers the family she has always longed for when she spends a life-changing summer in North Carolina.

Present Day: Keaton Smith is desperate for a fresh start. So when her mother needs someone to put her childhood home in Beaufort, North Carolina, on the market—the home that Keaton didn’t know existed until now—she jumps at the chance to head south. But the moment she steps foot inside the abandoned house, she’s confronted with secrets about grandparents who died in a car accident before she was born. And as she gets to know her charming next-door neighbor, his precocious ten-year-old son, and a flock of endearingly feisty town busybodies, she soon finds she has more questions than answers.

1976: After meeting her adoring husband Townsend, Rebecca “Becks” Saint James abandoned the life she knew and never looked back. Forty years later, she’s made a name for herself as the best hostess North Carolina has ever seen. Her annual summer suppers have become the stuff of legend, and locals and out-of-towners alike clamor for an invitation to her stunning historic home. But she’s struggling behind the façade. Becks strives to make the lives of those around her as easy as possible, but this summer she is facing a dilemma that even she can’t solve. And as the end of the season looms, she is brought to a decision she never wanted to make.

As both Keaton and Becks face new challenges and chapters, they are connected through time by the house on Sunset Lane, which has protected the secrets, hopes, and dreams of the women in their family for generations. For fans of  Summer of ‘69  and  The Notebook ,  A Happier Life  explores the power of family, the bonds of friendship, and the boundless nature of love.

A Tour of Laurel's Mediterranean Mansion: The Marcellino House

Home Town lovers who turn into Laurel visitors have an obsession with seeing the renovated houses on the show. Most people don't know that there are a plethora of treasures scattered around the historic district of downtown that never made it onto the big screen. One of the most beautiful and historic houses has remained Laurel's best-kept secret—until today!

Nestled around the corner from the Lauren Rogers Museum and a brisk walk from downtown, this Mediterranean mansion is a breathtaking sight for visitors and locals alike. The terra-cotta facade, green shutters, and landscaping meld so ideally, a passerby could easily believe they've transported to Europe.

The Marcellino home remains a local treasure, a testament to Laurel's history, and a surprise in the middle of a southern Mississippi town. Mrs. Dawn Marcellino graciously opened her home to our team and allowed us to take a peek into her family's four-story home so that we could share the beautiful history with you, dear reader.

FRONT EXTERIOR

"In the state of Mississippi, there are four houses built with poured concrete rebar around the turn of the century, and two of them are sister homes. Our house is four stories and made with foot-thick concrete rebar. They [contracted builders] built the house with electricity, which was very new at the time. We didn't see any sign that it was originally outfitted for gas, but they ran conduit for the electrical wire through all the concrete walls."

mediterranean mansion tour

"At the time, there were barely any houses around this one. It wasn't uncommon for people to have small pastures around their houses, but what we've seen in pictures is that there were dirt sidewalks, and then eventually they put board sidewalks with wooden bricks."

mediterranean mansion tour

FIRST FLOOR: ENTRY | SITTING ROOMS

"This is a big house for Jerry and I, so that's why we like to host people from all over the world— missionaries and friends. That's why we feel like we're here. My dad gave us this gift, and we just take care of it. We hope to serve God's people and enjoy this gift for a time."

mediterranean mansion tour

In true southern fashion, Mrs. Dawn offered us tea and poppyseed bread upon arrival. We sat in their fabulous glass-paneled room that would make an en Plein air artist weep.

mediterranean mansion tour

 DINING ROOM

"The dining room is the room you see when you first walk in. It's where we shared holiday meals with our seven children, but now our family has grown so much, it's hard to fit all of our kids, their spouses and children in this room. It's a good problem to have."

mediterranean mansion tour

"We've collected furniture from all over the world. These burl walnut pieces are from France and Italy."

mediterranean mansion tour

 SECOND FLOOR: MAIN BEDROOMS

mediterranean mansion tour

"There used to be an open well underneath the house. It was cutting edge at the time to have an open stream running under the house with the furnace sitting on top. They think that's how the family humidified their house in the winter."

mediterranean mansion tour

The third floor is the intimate family space. Floral wallpaper covers one room while others take on a bold color or a neutral palette. T his space reflects their family's personality while preserving the history and character of its past owners as well.

mediterranean mansion tour

"This small room is off of our master bedroom. It's where we have Christmas with the kids, but now we've got too many to fit in there. We used to cram in there and drink hot tea, eat pumpkin bread and open their stockings."

mediterranean mansion tour

REAR EXTERIOR

The Marcellino house has seen many things since it was built over 112 years ago. The history continues with the birth of their seven children, their daughter's wedding in the backyard, and the continuation of hospitality that they've extended to missionaries from all across the world.

mediterranean mansion tour

"This house has been a blessing to our family, and we hope that it continues to be a place where we can bless others."

Be on the lookout for Laurel's historic house tours soon or plan a visit to Laurel soon to see all that our hometown has to offer. Until then, support American-Made makers and creators here!

Tour a Malibu Home That Was Designed to Look Like a Mediterranean Resort

The stars seem to have been aligned for Lala Reimagined —a West Coast studio founded four years ago by Lia McNairy and Azar Fattahi—right from the get-go. Their very first clients turned out to be dream clients, who hired them, in fairly rapid succession, to design three different properties in California, including this Spanish colonial ranch near the beaches of Malibu.

“Our first project was their house in Los Angeles; we were in the middle of renovating it when the pandemic began and they acquired this property,” Fattahi says. “They put so much trust in our hands, it’s been an unbelievable synergy of a relationship.” The clients, Anjannette Padilla-Ryan, a clinical psychologist, and her husband, Tom Ryan, president and CEO of Paramount Streaming, made the purchase with the goal of having a place to retreat to with their three school-aged children.

“It’s only a 45-minute drive in good traffic but it just feels like hundreds of miles away,” Ryan says. “The kids can run around and go to the beach.” Perched on a Malibu hilltop surrounded by five acres of greenery, with ocean views to the south and mountain views to the north, east, and west, the 6,000-square-foot home does indeed seem like a faraway retreat. Taking advantage of the idyllic setting, Lala Reimagined’s team set out to create a space that called to mind the Argentario coast of Tuscany, specifically the rustic yet glamorous Il Pelicano , an iconic resort awash in sunny yellow and fresh green hues.

“We wanted it to feel like they traveled to one of their favorite spots in France or Italy, like a beautiful boutique hotel on the Mediterranean,” says McNairy, who worked as a creative director in the fashion industry before teaming up with Fattahi. “We used a lot of wicker, a lot of vintage pieces sourced from flea markets, and also high-end pieces, but nothing too precious.”

The summer vibes are strong in the entryway foyer, where the designers placed two straw armchairs with bright yellow cushions next to a wall hung with colorful ceramic plates. A couple of steps down is the main living area, which has wooden beams on the ceiling and terra-cotta tiles on the floor and is decorated with an eclectic “high and low” collection of furniture: ’60s armchairs with pistachio cushions perched atop wicker frames and a mushroom-shaped ceramic stool from Urban Outfitters .

Sunlight floods into the grand space through a series of French doors, which open onto an elevated veranda with sweeping canyon vistas. Down the hall, in the primary bedroom, the designers veered from the Mediterranean theme to add a bit of SoCal character, seen in an electric blue wooden bed set against a plum wall and in the en suite bathroom in a hot pink woven pendant from Mexican design studio Mestiz .

“We [aim to] source pieces that no one’s ever seen before,” Fattahi says, adding that they are always seeking out design galleries, craftspeople, and antique shops around the world. Most of the pieces in the Malibu house were newly purchased and required a bit of patience. The pink-and-green Milanese tiles in the primary bathroom, for example, took eight months to arrive, and a set of arched cane chairs from a studio in Australia, took all of a year. This was fine with the homeowners, who welcomed the designers’ ongoing presence and even asked them to work on a third property, a 10-acre estate in Palm Springs. “We’ve become very close friends,” Padilla-Ryan says. “We work together really well.”

Set on a hillside with views of Malibu’s mountains and seashore, this colonial-style home feels worlds away from the bustle of nearby Los Angeles. Lia McNairy and Azar Fattahi of Lala Reimagined designed the house to look like a resort on the Mediterranean, with special nods to Italy’s Il Pelicano, an iconic 1960s hotel filled with yellow, green, and terra-cotta hues. By the entrance, the yellow-and-black wool rug is by Temple Studio .

“We were on the hunt for another project when we came across these chairs,” says Fattahi of the living room’s vintage wicker armchairs with draping pistachio cushions. “They shifted the whole design and became what we built the room around.” Though the designers kept the home’s original floors and built-in recessed mantle, they retiled the fireplace with porcelain earth-toned tiles from Wow .

Unlock the past: Explore 19th century mansions, historic homes

Localish logo

GALVESTON, Texas -- Visitors have a chance to explore Galveston's rich history through its architecture.

"People love to come down and walk through the houses," Will Wright of Galveston Historical Foundation said.

The foundation runs Historic Homes Tour, which is held annually during the first two weekends of May.

The tour gives people an opportunity to step inside these private residencies that are often closed to the public. A few of the homes were built in the 19th century and work has been done to preserve its history.

"It's great to always look back at the past and keep things as they were so we can go back and see it, and enjoy the details," Homeowner Julie Lee said.

This year marks the tour's 50th anniversary. Tickets are available online .
