Grayson Murray, Winner of Two PGA Tours, Dies at 30

Mr. Murray, who was outspoken about his depression and alcohol abuse, had begun a comeback after several volatile years, winning this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

By Emmett Lindner

Grayson Murray, the professional golfer who won two PGA Tour titles and was outspoken about his battles with depression and alcohol, died on Saturday. He was 30.

His death was confirmed in a statement by the PGA Tour, which did not give a cause.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” the tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, said in the statement.

After a successful 40-foot putt to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, Mr. Murray rose to 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking, a career high. The event marked the height of a comeback run after several volatile years as Mr. Murray struggled with his mental health.

In a news conference after winning the Sony Open, Mr. Murray said that for a time he would drink during tournament weeks.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year, but also feeling like I was invincible,” he said. “I’m a different man now, and I would not be in this position right now, today, if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”

He added that he had attended rehabilitation for a month, and said, “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

Mr. Murray had failed to gain P.G.A. status for several months last year after a series of off-course events mirrored a decline in his play.

A 2021 alcohol-related incident at a hotel bar in Hawaii led to his suspension from the P.G.A. Afterward, he posted to social media.

“Why was I drunk?” he wrote, adding that he was as an “alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

The golfer Phil Mickelson, who has struggled with a gambling addiction , responded at the time on social media , saying “If I can help in any way I’d be happy to.”

This year, Mr. Murray played well enough to qualify for the Masters Tournament and PGA Championship. On Friday, he withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

Grayson Murray was born on Oct. 1, 1993, in Raleigh, N.C., according to an ESPN biography. A list of survivors was not immediately available.

He attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State Universities, and at 16 became the second-youngest player to enter the Korn Ferry Tour, according to the P.G.A.

He continued to gain prominence, playing in the U.S. Open at the age of 19 and clinching a win at the 2017 Barbasol Championship, sinking a 5-foot putt for a one-stroke victory.

After losing his PGA Tour card for the 2023 season, and following an angry outburst directed at Mr. Monahan, he seemed to have found his swing again. He won two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments last year, regaining his P.G.A. eligibility, and finished in the top 10 at two events.

President of PGA Tour Superstores on Planning For The Future

By kathlene bissell | mar 28, 2023.

PGA Tour Superstore, White Plains,Syndication: Westchester County Journal News

Recently, I sat down with Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstore, for a one-on-one interview to discuss the growth of the company and her part in it.  In addition, Spiegel was a guest on The Golf Show 2.0 podcast. This is Part II of a two-part article. Part I can be found here.

If PGA Superstore is any guide, golf is definitely on the upswing. Their business is beyond good, according to Jill Spiegel, the relatively newly appointed president of the company.

“The first half of ’21, we did more business than we did in all of 2019, which was unbelievable,” Spiegel said about the company’s success, even though the pandemic wasn’t over in 2021.

Some of the company’s growth came from expansion, but their same-store growth was up nearly 60 percent. These days, sales and the number of stores continue to expand.

“Our average volume has increased dramatically,” Spiegel added.  “It’s really a combination of both.”

"“It’s not just about transactions. it’s about relationships, and we really feel that way when we have customers come in.”  —  Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstores."

In 2019, eCommerce was a much smaller part of their overall business, Spiegel said, but when they were faced with shutting down stores in 2020, online tripled. Today, eCommerce sales are not the lion’s share, nor do they want it to be.

“It contracted a little this year (2022), but it’s still so much higher than it was back in ’19,” she noted, adding that they really prefer having customers come into the stores.

“We don’t want to do eCommerce business in place of brick and mortar,” she said.

"“It’s an experience (when you come to the stores), and you don’t get that same experience on the website as you do when you’re in the store.”"

She looks at it as omnichannel. A lot of their customers utilize online information to research what products are available, whether clothing or equipment. Then they come into the stores for the purchase. Or they come to the stores to be fit for clubs or for a lesson.

Right now, she believes it’s a good balance, but eCommerce is significantly lower than 40% of sales.

The main focus for Spiegel in the upcoming months is to execute the expansion without losing what they believe is great customer service in every store.

“A lot of our markets were new last year, and we have eight more scheduled for this year,” she noted.

In 2022, they opened eight PGA Tour Superstores.

Three of them were in California: Pleasanton, Cupertino, and Torrance. (They already had a store in East Palo Alto.)  They debuted in the Milwaukee market. They also added stores in Tampa, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Rockville, Maryland.

“By the end of this year (2023), we’ll have five stores in Chicago, more than we’ll have in any one city,” Spiegel said about the continued growth.

States with the most to date are Florida with 10 locations and Texas with nine.

“We look at where we go based on how much golf is played,” she noted.

States with the most golf courses, according to the National Golf Foundation are, in order, Florida (1238), California (964), Michigan (860), New York (830), and Texas (819).

In theory, that should be an indicator of where stores will open in the future. But some locations are just golfier than others. Like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where PGA Tour Superstore started as Martin’s Golf & Tennis.

This year, PGA Tour Superstore plans to open in another eight locations.

Which will bring the total to 66. They expect to be in the mid-70s by 2024, and by 2026, the company plans to have nearly 100 stores.

One factor in the choice of the store location is real estate availability and price. PGA Tour Superstore looks for deals in or near existing shopping areas. For example, they purchased the leases of many Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores and converted them to PGA Tour Superstores.

“A lot of our stores the last year have been Toys R Us or Babies R Us, and we were able to get into some very expensive markets with advantageous pricing because of that,” Spiegel explained.

"“We entered the Boston market with three stores. I think all of those were either Toys or Babies, and one of the California stores we opened, the one in Pleasanton, was a Babies R Us.”"

Their real estate division is always on the lookout for opportunities.

But with expansion comes the challenge of providing the same consistent service at each location. Recently they had what they call their annual summit, which they were not able to do during the time of COVID. While they usually do them in Atlanta, this time, it was held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

“We trained 240 of our club fitters across the company,” Spiegel explained.

"“It’s an amazing event. All the OEMs (equipment manufacturers) come in. It’s a big demo day. It’s educational classroom teaching, and then they go out on the range, and they talk equipment. Not only is it great training and great information, it’s a cultural infusion as well.”"

Spiegel said she had received many thank you emails from club fitters who attended. That is just the tip of the golf tee when it comes to training.

PGA Tour Superstore also built a new training center and performance facility in Atlanta on the second floor of their offices. The Atlanta training center is a replica of a store with the studios, the repair area, and the instruction bays.

“We bring in fitters, we bring in service people, like people who are doing repairs and putting on grips and bending clubs,” she explained.

Instructors are also included in special training sessions.

“When we have new people, they come in every week for training because we want consistency in how you’re fitting and how you’re teaching and how you’re putting grips on,” she noted, adding that it was a multi-million dollar investment, but worth every penny.

Each skilled area is a niche, and PGA Tour Superstore wants to create consistency from location to location.

“The repair area is hard to do. It’s kind of a lost art, so it’s like how do we find those people, and get them trained up,” she added.

Spiegel is enthusiastic about the challenge of making it all work, from finding new store locations, to seeing new customer service staff get training, to seeing the stores open, to visiting a store after it opens, to seeing customers come through the door.

But the goal is to provide a solid, dependable customer experience that’s as identical as it can be whether it’s in Seattle or Orlando. The customer service personnel, she notes, are what make it work.

"“What we always worry about is, because we are growing double digits every year, how do you protect the culture? The two most important groups of people in our mix are our associate and our customer,” she insisted.  “It’s not just about transactions. it’s about relationships, and we really feel that way when we have customers come in.”"
Next. Jill Spiegel, President of PGA Tour Superstore, Heads Up Next Expansion. dark

What’s ahead? More stores, for sure, and in the future, maybe some international locations.

In Canada, she pointed out, 15 or 16 percent of the population plays golf compared to the US which is closer to 7 or 8 percent.

Breaking news, elites might laugh at red lobster closing, but middle america grew up on it.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

They said the shrimp were endless, until the shrimp ended them.

Last summer, Red Lobster, a pillar of American casual dining since 1968, offered Americans a delicious deal — $20 endless shrimp as a permanent menu item (rather than a limited-time special).

We tied on the bib and ate it up, costing the company $11 million and forcing it into Chapter 11  bankruptcy this week .

Red Lobster will initially shutter at least 48 of the 578 restaurants it operates in 44 states — with dozens more closures to come.

A plate of endless shrimp from Red Lobster on a table.

To coastal elites, who enjoy access to a true buffet of seafood restaurants, this crustacean cataclysm was one big joke.

“Red Lobster Waiter: Sir, are you done? You’ve had 561 scampi and 20lbs of popcorn shrimp. Me: We’re done when I say we’re done, podcaster and writer Trung Phan memed on X with a still from “Breaking Bad” and the text, “Red Lobster’s bankruptcy explained.”

The riffs rolled in on Reddit , too, comparing Red Lobster customers to the “remorseless eating machine” Homer Simpson during his gluttonous visit to  the Frying Dutchman’s all-you-can-eat seafood buffet .

That stinks, because for millions of landlocked Americans the death of Red Lobster threatens a vital culinary lifeline.

Bill Darden, founder of Red Lobster and Olive Garden, holding a sign.

I grew up in Nashville, Tenn., before the foodie revolution, when fried river and lake fish were the sole “seafood” option on the menu.

My first memory of trying shellfish was at a special lunch I had with my late grandfather at a Red Lobster, where else?

As a boy, pulling pieces of lobster meat from the fire engine red shell of that alien sea creature, dipping each piece into melted butter, seemed beyond extravagant.

Today, dining at a Red Lobster forms one of my most vivid memories of my grandfather.

I’m sure that there were other restaurants boiling lobster, searing shrimp or chilling crab in Nashville in the mid 1990s.

I’m also sure that they cost far more than our family’s dinner budget at that time.

While the diversity of dining options from Nashville to De Moines has improved dramatically over the past two or three decades, affordability has only gotten worse.

In 2022, US consumers spent an average of 11.3% of their disposable personal income on food, both at home and at restaurants — the most since the 1980s — according to the most recent data from  the USDA .

Beyonce accepting the Innovator award at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards, holding a trophy in hand.

The inflated price of food is just one knot within a tangled trawling line of  cost of living pressures  that Americans are facing.

No, wonder Red Lobster’s 64 million annual customers ate so many shrimp.

As more Red Lobsters close, the void will be most acutely felt by middle and working class African Americans, who have been particularly loyal to the restaurant group memorialized in the lyrics of Beyoncé’s “Formation.”

Red Lobster founder Bill Darden opened his first restaurants in the Jim Crow south of the 1930s and was known for  defying local segregation laws to welcome everyone to the table.

That may have been more than half a century ago, but it’s a legacy not easily forgotten.

“Sure, we like fish and a good deal — Red Lobster represented something like the strip mall version of the beloved fish fry — but we like being treated equally even more,”  wrote Robyn Autry, a sociology professor and director of the Center for the Study of Public Life at Wesleyan University, following the announcement of Red Lobster’s woes.

One of the many social-media memes following Red Lobster's Chapter 11 announcement.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for a bad guy to blame for the fall of the house of the Cheddar Bay Biscuit, forget middle America’s waistline.

The true culprit is a familiar figure, the grime reaper of many once-great, American-made businesses: rapacious private equity.

In 2014, Red Lobster founder Bill Darden sold the chain to Golden Gate Capital, a private equity firm, for $2.1 billion.

Today its largest shareholder is seafood distributor and Chicken of the Sea owner Thai Union Group.

A plate of shrimp and vegetables from Red Lobster's Endless Shrimp meal deal.

Together, Golden Gate and Thai Union drove Red Lobster into the ground,  strip mining the company  until it was $1 billion in debt, according to its bankruptcy filing.

The restaurant chain has had five CEOs since 2021.

Fishier still: Thai Union used Red Lobster to  unload its own shrimp supply .

Bilge-rat executives love to blame their customers when the claw starts to pinch, but they were right about one thing: It  was  gluttony, or rather greed, that bankrupted Red Lobster.

But the culprits were big business — not big eaters.

Two-time pga tour winner grayson murray dies saturday morning.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning, the Tour confirmed.

Murray withdrew Friday late in his second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

In a memo to the membership that was released Saturday afternoon, commissioner Jay Monahan wrote: “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. There is nothing we can do but mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Monahan said that, after a conversation with Murray’s parents, tournament play at Colonial would continue.

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” Monahan said. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Murray, 30, won the Sony Open in a playoff earlier this year, ending a six-year winless drought during which he’d struggled both mentally and physically.

Murray, who was profiled in this in-depth piece by Golf Channel in 2017, had been open about his battles with anxiety and depression. He said in January that he sought treatment in the past few years for alcohol abuse but had been sober for several months.

“Grayson was the absolute best,” his caddie, Jay Green, told GolfChannel.com via text message. “Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.”

Following his victory at Waialae, Murray spoke optimistically about his future, saying that he had rediscovered his faith and was engaged to be married to Christiana Ritchie, whom he met in 2021.

“I wouldn’t trade anything,” Murray said at the time. “I have a beautiful fiancée. I have beautiful parents. I have beautiful nephews, siblings. Everyone in my life right now who is close to me, who has been through the struggles with me, it’s all a team effort. I think this is just the start of something really special.”

Growing up, Murray was one of the best prospects in the country, winning the prestigious Junior Worlds three times and becoming, at age 16, then the second-youngest to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour. Though he bounced around in college, Murray made an immediate impact once he landed on the PGA Tour, claiming the 2017 Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old rookie.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year but also feeling like I was invincible,” Murray said in January. He said he often drank to excess while at tournaments while battling his personal demons.

Murray, who spent time on the PGA and Korn Ferry tours over the last five years, regained his PGA Tour status this year after winning twice on the secondary circuit in 2023 and believed he was better equipped to handle the challenges of Tour life.

“It took me a long time to get to this point,” he said. “That was over seven years ago. I’m a different man now.”

Murray had made the cut in the first two majors of the year, including last week at the PGA Championship, where he tied for 43 rd .

Francisco Lindor gets roasted for baffling strikeout

Francisco Lindor takes strike three

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was responsible for perhaps the least competitive strikeout of the MLB season during Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Lindor was facing Giants reliever Randy Rodriguez in the bottom of the 7th with a runner on second base. He worked a full count, and then inexplicably gave up on a 3-2 slider that caught the corner of the plate.

What in the World???!!! pic.twitter.com/q3SyTyREdx — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) May 25, 2024

There is a difference between getting fooled by a breaking ball and not even trying. This is the latter. Lindor was never going to swing at that pitch even if it was a fastball down the middle. Maybe he forgot the count, but that seems unlikely. He certainly did not try to call time. He just stared at it.

Lindor came into Saturday’s game hitting just .208 on the season. Mets fans have tried a whole host of ways to support him and get him going, but even the most sympathetic among them will struggle to have anything positive to say about that plate appearance.
