There is a lot to do in the surrounding areas of Lubbock, Texas. You can stay in Lubbock and explore some exciting cities of Canyon, New Mexico, and Carlsbad. If you are planning some fun in your free weekend, below are some of the top spots for sightseeing closer to Lubbock.

The summers are clear, hot, and long. The winters are very cold, windy, dry, partly cloudy, and short. All-year-round temperature varies between 29 F to 93 F and rarely goes down 18 F or goes up more than 101 F. The perfect time to explore places near Lubbock for hot-weather activities is from the second half of June to the latter part of August. 

1. Carlsbad, New Mexico

Carlsbad is a small town of New Mexico, popularly known for its scenic caverns, which you can explore in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. There are many things that you can do in the park. It includes going for a tour in the gigantic underground chamber to enjoy a beautiful hike on the top.

When the sun sets, you can look in for a spot near the opening of the caverns and watch the enormous number of bats making their way up for the evening. Although the park is the epicenter of attraction, the town also has plenty to explore. You can enjoy the plants and wildlife in the Gardens and Living Desert Zoo. 

2. Ruidoso, New Mexico

Enjoy a road trip journey within five hours to Ruidoso, New Mexico, if you relish the scenic beauty of the mountains. This charming mountain town is cuddled among the mountains of Sierra Blanca.

You can find plenty of places on rent for your vacation with mind-blowing views. In summers, one can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and rock climbing. There is a chance for you to view and enjoy a live horse race at the Ruidoso Horse Race Course .

3. Canyon, Texas

Canyon gives you a feeling of a small town even though it is closer to Amarillo. The district of the downtown has a conventional atmosphere that takes you to the yesteryears. 5. Santa Rosa, New Mexico

If you want to deceive the scorching summers, consider visiting Santa Rosa. It is slightly under a four-hour drive from Lubbock. It is an ideal place for a quick and entertaining break during weekends. Blue hole, a beautiful spring, remains cool throughout the year. It is the most famous attraction for swimmers, snorkelers as well as scuba divers.

Park Lake is situated within the city only and gives an exceptional combination of fun at the water park and its scenic beauty. 6. Fritch, Texas

Fritch is a small town situated thirty miles on the northern side of Amarillo and has the best-in-class outdoor activities for recreation. You can also visit the National Monument of Alibates Flint Quarry, which is considered the pride of Fritch. It has enormous deposits of solid rocks which were once used for creating tools by the natives. 

The tourist spends their time exploring the petroglyphs engraved by the ancient people and enjoying the park’s scenic exquisiteness. Fritch is in the outskirts of the National Recreational Area of Lake Meredith, having great spots for hiking, fishing, and boating.

1. National Ranching Heritage Center

Termed as one of the beautiful places in America , the National Ranching Heritage Center is one of the free things to do in the city of Lubbock, and it’s also one of the most-loved Lubbock attractions.

Opened in 1976, it is a park composed of multiple different structures that offer an informative glimpse into the history of Western ranching and its architecture.

The complex of the National Ranching Heritage Center comprises 49 different structures, dating as far back to the 1780s and as near as the 1950s.

The oldest building is a replica, but all the others are genuine structures relocated painstakingly from countries across the globe.

Each building is arranged so that they are in chronological order and connected by paths of concrete, allowing you to get the full feel of ranching development over the years.

A trolley comes by every half an hour to bring you through the tour on wheels, with a small fee.

The National Ranching Heritage Center takes up 19 acres of space, and its main building spans 44,000 square feet.

This structure is a ranching museum, covering a large array of different topics that go from cattle rustling to cowboy boots.

You’ll also find stunning sculptures in front of the building, life-sized and well-crafted.

As for the rest of the buildings, you’ll find that they are mindfully furnished to period-correctness!

In April at the National Ranching Heritage Center, a special event called Ranch Day brings the true spirit of Texas with horses, cowboys, and chuck wagons all coming to perform.

2. American Wind Power Center

The American Wind Power Center was created by Billy Wolfe, a home economics teacher and local of Texas, as a labor of love.

Over the course of her adult life, she located, photographed, researched, and put a lot of effort into the preservation of windmills, their importance, and their cultural significance.

For close to three decades, Wolfe worked as hard as she could to purchase hundreds of these structures, aiming to open a museum just for them one day.

The American Wind Power Center, today, is exactly that.

It opened in 1998 and eventually expanded in 2001, and now, it is home to almost 200 different windmills of all kinds, colors, shapes, origins, and sizes.

Windmills played a fairly significant role in the lives and survival of settlers back in the prairie days.

The American Wind Power Center features their stories and highlights their importance with reconstructed windmills and educational information.

Stretched across a large field, the center is one of Lubbock’s most fun places to visit and can be spotted from the road.

3. Buddy Holly Center

The Buddy Holly Center is dedicated to its titular celebrity: Buddy Holly, the rock-and-roll icon that took America by storm in the 1950s.

As a native of Lubbock, Texas, it only makes sense that he is honored here in the city where he was born!

The Buddy Holly Center provides a great glimpse into the career and life of Buddy Holly, ranging from his childhood years all the way up to the height of his performing career and beyond.

Memorabilia of all kinds bring you closer to the talented man, with some highlights being his signature glasses and his Fender Stratocaster guitar.

The former was actually recovered from the site of the fatal airplane crash that took Holly’s life.

Next to the building, you’ll find the J. I. Allison House, which is the site where Holly co-wrote That’ll Be The Day.

The FiberMax Center for Discovery features many different interactive displays that discuss equipment, farming methods, tools, and other interesting tidbits of information.

One of the most intriguing points of interest at the FiberMax Center for Discovery is the tool shop, featuring genuine 20th-century objects.

6. Silent Wings Museum

The Silent Wings Museum is situated within what was once the airport terminal of Lubbock.

It is one of Texas’ top places to visit for those interested in the history of World War II, and it is dedicated to glider pilots who fought for the United States in those times.

80% of those glider pilots were trained here, too.

The Silent Wings Museum interprets, collects, preserves, records, and exhibits all sorts of artifacts and information related to the glider program.

A 90-minute tour around the museum gives you a quick look into the world of World War II gliders, showcasing the realities of those who piloted them through photographs and other forms of memorabilia.

The museum is also arranged uniquely, designed to mimic a genuine war zone of the era.

The highlight of the Silent Wings Museum is its WACO CG-4A, a giant glider that has been perfectly restored and is now on display for the public.

It hangs from the building’s ceiling, just low enough for you to look inside as you imagine the amazing bravery involved with descending from 1,500 feet to the ground without the aid of an engine in the middle of a war.

You’ll also be able to view military equipment, smaller gliders, footlockers, uniforms, and glider parts.

With a low entrance fee, a visit here is one of the city’s coolest cheap things to do.

7. Prairie Dog Town

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Lubbock and you love cute little animals, then Prairie Dog Town is the spot for you!

It’s a simple little attraction and is merely a small field filled with these lovely mammals, surrounded by a low wall that you can see over.

It was established in the 1930s by Kennedy N. Clapp and his wife and is situated within Lubbock’s Mackenzie Park.

Prairie Dog Town is the first site just like it to be designated a protected location.

Its humble beginnings involved a mere two burrows and four dogs, but today, it has grown a lot and even features native grasses and irrigation for the animals!

The cute critters in question have free reign of the field, running wherever they like as they check out the cars in the parking lot, perch themselves on the fence, and peek into the entrance road.

They mostly don’t pay too much heed to guests, so you can stand near them without them feeling disturbed.

In addition to all of that, there is no entrance fee to Prairie Dog Town, so it’s one of the city’s free things to do!

Watch these cute prairie dogs play and lounge close to their holes, peeping as they go, standing up to showcase their full length, and often even falling over in the most precious ways!

8. Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark

Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark sits in Yellowhouse Draw, an age-old valley that was once a source of water for those living in the Southern High Plains.

In the early 1930s, Yellowhouse Draw dried up, and settler activity was slowly covered up as sediment formed over it.

A while later, the city decided to try to find the springs and breathe new life into them.

Dredging of the underground springs would soon lead to the discovery of bison kills from the Folsom Period, including one by a Paleoindian group of settlers that were unknown at the time.

Radiocarbon dating eventually revealed that people had been living in the Southern High Plains for as long as 12,000 years!

In the summer, annual excavations are continued at the National Historic Landmark in order to further preserve the legacy and historical remnants of these settlers.

With over 336 acres of land, there are plenty of places to go within the valley, with 4.5 miles of biking and walking trails in one of the city’s best historic locations.

You can find the National Historic Landmark on the Texas Tech University campus.

9. Science Spectrum Museum and Omni Theater

The Science Spectrum Museum and Omni Theater is an amazing and fun location, especially if you’re bringing kids with you on your Lubbock vacation.

Antiques, artifacts, and informational displays about important figures in the community paint an interesting and enlightening picture.

The Caviel Museum of African American History is situated within the first pharmacy to be run and owned by an African-American couple in America, namely Alfred and Billie Caviel.

After five decades of successful business, they donated the shop to the Roots Historical Arts Council and retired, personally hoping it would be turned into a museum for their culture.

In 2015, the museum opened as the first of its kind in the general area.

If you’re planning a trip to Lubbock, we’ve got a “greatest hits” itinerary ready for you.

Many people who didn’t grow up in West Texas only know of Lubbock as the home of Texas Tech University. It has far more going for it than Red Raiders pride though. Nicknamed Hub City, Lubbock sits at the interaction of five major highways (look at a map and you can visualize the “hub” they form), and it serves as an economic and cultural center for the region.

While it may not be one of the biggest cities in the state, Lubbock impresses with how much history it holds in such a dense area with its numerous different museums. Plus, there are plenty of family-friendly attractions to entertain even your youngest traveling companions.

1. Visit Buddy Holly Center

Buddy Holly — the singer, songwriter, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-r, was born and buried in Lubbock, so it’s easy to come across tributes to him around town like the street called Buddy Holly Ave and the performing arts center named after him.

If you’re interested in learning more about his life and legacy, head to the Buddy Holly Center to see memorabilia and exhibits related to the musician. During your visit, make sure to check out the Buddly Holly Statue and the West Texas Walk of Fame in the plaza outside.

2. See the Wildlife at Prairie Dog Town

Have you ever seen a prairie dog outside of a zoo exhibit? Scratch that — have you ever seen a prairie dog in real life? Well, if not, you have a great opportunity to do so while in Lubbock. Over in Mackenzie Park, Prairie Dog Town is home to a protected prairie dog colony, making it one of the more unique attractions in the city.

It started back in 1935 by one K. N. Clapp in a move against the extinction of the black-tailed prairie dog. There’s no fee to visit, and it’s pretty darn cute seeing the little critters pop up from their burrows.

3. Satisfy Your Curiosity at the Museum of Texas Tech University

Boy, is there a lot going on at the Museum of Texas Tech University . There are six different collections, including art, anthropology, and paleontology, and their objects are spread across nine permanent galleries plus seven more galleries for temporary and traveling exhibits. From Southwest Native American pottery and handwoven rugs to fossil vertebrates from the Triassic period, there’s plenty to look at.

The icing on the cake? Admission is always free. As if you didn’t have enough to see already, there’s also the Moody Planetarium inside the museum, which puts on shows Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (there is a fee for those).

4. Explore the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater

There’s so much to discover at the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater . This kid-friendly spot has three floors of permanent displays and over 250 interactive exhibits about science from nanotechnology to space exploration. Don’t just stop at those though!

While here, you’ll also be able to see the city’s only public aquarium and live animal shows. There’s also a movie theater with a 58-foot screen so whatever you’re watching (maybe a documentary about the universe or a film about aircraft carriers) feels like a truly immersive experience.

5. Learn at the National Ranching Heritage Center

When you look at West Texas’ history, ranching is a crucial part of it — back then and to this day. You can learn all about it as well as ranching across North America at the National Ranching Heritage Center , close to the Texas Tech University campus.

It’s a 27-acre museum complete with an outdoor historical park that has 55 structures like windmills, barns, and residential buildings (almost all of which are a century or two old). You’ll also be able to see exhibits on things like oil production, contemporary Western art, spurs, and memorabilia from the TV Western drama 1883 .

6. Go for a Ride at Joyland Amusement Park

Anyone fancy a trip to an amusement park? Another spot within Mackenzie Park, Joyland Amusement Park has been around since the late 1940s (although under a different name). The small, family-operated amusement park has over 30 rides and attractions, including kiddie rides like antique cars, family rides like the classic carousel, thrill rides like rollercoasters, and water rides like a log flume.

Hours of operation differ throughout the year, so make sure you check their opening times online before your visit. Buy an armband at admission and you’ll get access to all the rides in the park.

7. Play at the Park

Mackenzie Park (or Mackenzie Main City Park) has come up a couple of times now and for good reason. It’s the city’s biggest park, and aside from Prairie Dog Town and Joyland Amusement Park, which we’ve already covered, there are some other highlights in it worth checking out.

There’s the Meadowbrook Golf Course , a disc golf course, a sculpture garden, and equestrian trails. Another nice park to spend some time is just south of there: Mae Simmons Park . This park has a disc golf course too along with some nice fishing opportunities.

8. Check Out the American Windmill Museum

If you spend any amount of time around Lubbock, then you’ve seen your fair share of wind turbines. In fact, this area, the High Plains region, has more wind turbines than any other in the state. Fittingly, there’s the American Windmill Museum in Lubbock where you can view displays on the history of wind power, from the early commercial windmills to the massive wind turbines used today.

The museum has over 150 windmills/wind turbines, and it’s the largest windmill museum in the world. Everything’s bigger in Texas, y’all.

9. Stop by the Silent Wings Museum

Before you even step foot in the Silent Wings Museum , there’s history around you. The museum is dedicated to the World War II military glider program, and the institution itself is located on the airfield where the glider pilots actually trained — inside a former airport used during the 50s and 60s.

As you walk around the museum, you’ll learn about the role the gliders played in the war operations and what it was like for them in combat. One of the highlights here is seeing a CG-4A glider, one of the few of its kind that’s fully restored.

10. Check Out the Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark

Human presence in the area where Lubbock is today dates back thousands of years, and one great place to appreciate the long history of that inhabitation is at the Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark .

Part of the Museum of Texas Tech University, this landmark is an archaeological site and natural history preserve with evidence of occupation from 12,000 years ago. There are 4.5 miles of trails to wander, and as you walk along, you can learn about the local excavations here as well as the native flora and fauna.

11. Stroll Around the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum

You don’t need to leave Lubbock’s city limits to enjoy a bit more of Mother Nature. Inside Clapp Park, Lubbock Memorial Arboretum spans 93 acres and offers a peaceful place to go for a stroll (there’s an easy, 1.18-mile trail).

While here, have a look at differently themed gardens like the Sensory Garden (there’s a bed for each of the five senses) and the Rose Garden. The arboretum is open every day of the week, and it’s free to visit at all times. You’re welcome to bring your dog, but you’ll have to keep them on a leash.

12. Have a Sip at McPherson Cellars Winery

Feeling a little thirsty after running around town? Off to McPherson Cellars Winery you go. Housed in an old Coca-Cola bottling plant downtown, this winery is run by winemaker Kim McPherson, whose father is Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson was one of the pioneers of the modern Texas wine industry.

Swing by for a tasting Tuesday through Thursday in their designated tasting room, or their courtyard if the weather is nice, and join a tour if you like. If you’re coming with a group of six or more for tasting flights, then you’ll need to make a reservation in advance.

13. Go for a Drink at English Newsom Cellars

If you need more wine in your life, there’s also English Newsom Cellars . Situated south of the city center, this family-owned winery is a pretty spot to slow down for a bit and enjoy the good life.

You can try some of their locally produced wine in the tasting room, and you can also hop on one of their wine tours, which include a special barrel tasting (you get to sample the wine directly from the barrel!). If you come on a Saturday evening, you can check out their Food & Wine Market where good bites, sips, and live music await.

The Joyland Amusement Park originally opened in the late 1940s but was called the Mackenzie Park Playground. Despite the best intentions, after almost 30 years, the park began to seriously deteriorate. But it was saved by the Dean family who would fix it up and name it the Joyland Amusement Park. Ever since the Dean family purchased the amusement park, it has been one of the most popular Lubbock attractions.

The park is now being run by the second generation of Deans and is continuing to provide a day of family fun. There are now over 25 different rides. They range from kiddie rides, family rides, water rides, and thrill rides. There is a large variety to choose from, but the majority of the rides are classified as ‘thrill rides’. Buddy Holly Center

You can’t visit Lubbock Texas without a trip to the Buddy Holly Center. Lubbock’s most famous resident was born there and grew up there. He would go on to perform on local TV shows, open for Elvis Presley on several occasions, and eventually was signed to Decca Records. Buffalo Springs Lake

FiberMax Center For Discovery

The FiberMax Center for Discovery, or what was formerly known as the American Museum of Agriculture, is a great activity in Lubbock for the whole family. The museum changed its name in 2012 when it added a new state-of-the-art exhibit hall to the museum grounds. There are several buildings on the museum grounds and each focuses on a different aspect of American agricultural history.

It features a large collection of agricultural equipment that the city started collecting in 1969. There is also a large conference center with a catering kitchen and an outdoor patio. Robert Bruno’s Steel House

Head just a little outside of town to Ransom Canyon to see this odd-ball hidden gem in Lubbock. Robert Bruno’s Steel House is a very unique Lubbock attraction. Made by renowned sculptor Robert Bruno, the house resembles a four-legged UFO. It sits, perched on the side of a hill, surrounded by ordinary suburban homes. Bruno saw the home as a bit of a hobby and worked on it sporadically from 1973 until his death in 2008.

You can easily drive by the home and view it, but please remember it is private property. Although they are used to curious onlookers, it’s still respectful to not trespass. If you absolutely must see the inside of the UFO home, you can, but by appointment only. Private tours are available by appointment on the weekends, and there is a fee per person for the tour. If you are a fan of weird architecture, it may be worth it though. The home is full of bizarre angles, gorgeous stained glass, an almost completely wooden interior, and different unfinished areas. It’s definitely one of the weirdest and coolest Lubbock attractions.

Lubbock Lake Landmark

Sometimes called the Lubbock Lake Site, the Lubbock Lake Landmark is a protected state and federal landmark. On the 336 protected acres, there is an important archeological site and a natural history preserve. You can visit the landmark from Tuesday through Sunday for self-guided or guided tours. It’s one of the coolest free things to do in Lubbock.

The archeological site has evidence of use by the ancient cultures on the Llano Estacado that dates back nearly 12,000 years. It is truly incredible. Archeologists have also found evidence of long-extinct species in the layers of dirt and sediment at the Lake Lubbock Site. While you visit, you may even get the chance to watch archeologists as they continue to dig and find new evidence or early life in the area.

Antique Shopping

Moody Planetarium

The Moody Planetarium is part of the Museum of Texas Tech University campus. It is open for shows Tuesday through Saturday, and there is a small admission fee per person. Ticket pricing is based on age and students get a discount and military and veterans get in for free. With over 40 different shows, there is something to appeal to everyone at the planetarium.

Because they offer 40 different shows, you’ll want to check their schedule to see when they are running the show you are interested in. The selection has a good balance of educational shows as well as more strictly entertaining shows. They also have educational shows that are aimed at different age groups. Their entertainment shows include a laser show set to Pink Floyd, Metallica, and even Michael Jackson music.

Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theater

Sadly across America there are very few Drive-In theaters still operating. They were once a classic American past time and now it’s incredibly hard to find one running. If you’ve never been to the Drive-In, or even if you have, and have always been curious about the experience, we suggest a trip to the Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theater. They are open year-round and you can typically see two to three movies for the price of one at a traditional movie theater.

Stars & Stripes has a large car lot that looks directly at a massive screen which the movies then get projected onto. You use your car’s radio to listen to the movies. While you’re there you can enjoy classic diner food like burgers, hot dogs, and nachos from their snack bar. You can also sit out on the snack bar’s patio and enjoy the movie. The movie selection varies, but it is typically a selection of new releases with both kid’s movies and more adult movies. Although they do have weekends that are either just kid’s movies or just adults movies. A night at the drive-in is a really cool experience that everyone should get to enjoy, at least once.

While Lubbock may not be one of the more touristy cities in Texas, it’s still full of fun attractions that are unique to Lubbock. Whether you are interested in museums, rock n’ roll history, antique shopping, outdoor sports, or wine tasting, there are activities in Lubbock for everyone.

This vibrant West Texas university city is a wonderful place for arts and culture, and a genuinely fun and interesting place to visit, with things to do in every season. Lubbock claims to have more live music venues per capita than any city in Texas , with trendy and intimate venues tucked away around the city and particularly in the Depot District.

The city also has an abundance of unique museums, some of which focus on agriculture, heritage, history, and aviation. Several of the museums even offer free admission.

For an insightful look at how farming and agriculture have developed over the years, the FiberMax Center for Discovery is well worth a visit. Fantastic displays showcase the equipment used by farmers over the years.

Many of the displays in the Alton Brazell Exhibit Hall are interactive and the simple push of a button will bring up a 3D blacksmith discussing his craft, activate an animatronic farmer at work in the field, or start other unique programs.

One of the most impressive exhibits is the 20th-century tool shop , with hundreds upon hundreds of small tools mounted in an intricate design on the walls. A touch screen allows you to find out what each tool was used for.

Other displays include a room dedicated to more than 700 toy tractors, a well and drilling exhibit, and a seed showcase. Of particular interest to children of all ages is the Cotton Harvesting Experience that shakes, rattles, and makes you feel like you are driving the machine through a cotton field.

As you drive along America's highways, you will no doubt see the giant modern windmills off in the distance. For a greater understanding of these towering machines and how they developed from their humble beginnings, a visit to the American Windmill Museum is in order.

Here, you will find the world's largest collection of windmills spread across 28 acres. Artfully displayed in two custom-built massive buildings are more than 200 windmills dating from the 1860's to the present day.

Also of note is an impressive 6,600-square-foot model train display highlighting the relationship between the railways and windmills. The trains run around the entire building on two levels, joined by a one-of-a-kind spiral track that makes the climb possible.

Alongside this display is the largest collection of miniature houses in America and the Garrison Millstone room, dedicated to historical grinding millstones dating from the 1700s onwards.

Outside the two main buildings, in the Lineberry Windmill Park , is an assortment of windmills, including a massive Vestas wind turbine and a replica of a 1621 Post Mill windmill.

The National Ranching Heritage Center offers a unique look at the evolution of ranching and the associated architecture of the West.

This complex displays 49 historic structures from the 1780s to the 1950s. All but one of the structures was relocated here from other counties. The oldest building represented is a replica. The buildings are laid out in chronological order.

The center is a great place for strolling, as the buildings are spread across 19 acres and linked with concrete paths. If you prefer, a trolley runs on a 30-minute schedule. A small fee is charged per passenger.

The main building is a 44,000-square-foot museum with displays related to ranching; topics range from cowboy boots to cattle rustling. In front of the building are a series of 42 beautiful life-size sculptures.

If you find yourself in Lubbock in April, you might be lucky enough to visit during Ranch Day , when cowboys, chuck wagons, and horses perform.

You can combine your sightseeing at the National Ranching Heritage Museum with a stop at the nearby Museum of Texas Tech University.

This area has numerous fast food restaurant options, or nearby is the more upscale Cocina de La Sirena restaurant, less than 10 minutes away.

Housed in Lubbock's former airport terminal, the Silent Wings Museum is dedicated to America's glider pilots of WWII, 80 percent of whom were trained here.

The highlight of the aircraft on display is a perfectly restored WACO CG-4A. This giant glider is hung from the ceiling but low enough to the ground to allow you to peer inside and imagine what it must have been like to descend, without an engine, from 1,500 feet in the air to a remote airstrip in a country in a state of war.

Also on display are other aircraft and related items, including a smaller glider, glider components, and military equipment that was typically transported by gliders, such as bulldozers and Jeeps.

The walls and displays show photographs and other artifacts and memorabilia. A 15-minute documentary details the exploits and bravery of the WWII glider pilots.

The 1950's American rock-and-roll icon, Buddy Holly, was born in Lubbock, Texas. For a look at his life and career, the Buddy Holly Center is a great stop.

Memorabilia from his childhood right through to his performing days are on display. Some of the notable items from the collection include Holly's Fender Stratocaster guitar and his signature horn-rimmed glasses that were recovered from the airplane crash site where he was killed.

You can see several of his guitars on display, along with personal items, records, and more. In front of the museum is a giant sculpture of Holly's trademark horn-rimmed glasses.

Beside the main building is the J.I. Allison House , which is the home where Buddy Holly co-wrote the hit song That'll Be the Day . Across the street from the center is a larger-than-life size statue of Buddy Holly with his guitar. Behind the statue is the West Texas Walk of Fame .

Prairie Dog Town is simply a small field full of prairie dogs, but it offers unlimited cuteness and it's hugely popular with visitors. It's also free.

A very low wall surrounds the main area, where you can see dozens of the little fellows at any given moment, but the prairie dogs run freely all over the area; along the entrance road, in the parking area, even sitting on the fence.

They go about their business, with little regard for visitors standing just a few feet away. You can watch them playing or hanging out by their holes, standing up on their back legs, peeping loudly, and then falling over in dramatic fashion.

This free museum features collections on a variety of topics, including natural history, anthropology, paleontology, fine art, textiles, and various changing exhibitions.

Some of the most visually impressive exhibits at the Museum of Texas Tech University are the huge dinosaur skeleton replicas that dominate some of the large rooms and halls. You can also see a replica of a mammoth skeleton in the Ice Age exhibit.

The Diamond M Gallery Wing showcases works by a number of western artists. Also of note is the colorful collection of Southwest Native American pottery and textiles. Changing exhibits compliment the permanent displays and create ongoing reasons for return visits.

Also located in the Museum of Texas Tech is the Moody Planetarium . A modest fee is charged to enter and to enjoy any one of over 40 shows that take place on a regular basis. In addition to shows that take you deep into the cosmos, the planetarium also offers fantastically choreographed laser spectacles with accompanying rock, country, and pop music.

This unusual piece of architecture seems somewhat reminiscent of Antoni Gaudi's creations in Barcelona. Made completely of Corten steel and balancing on four legs, the house's only entrance is via a narrow walkway connecting the home to the hillside.

Curved walls that meld into the roof, oddly shaped windows, and its raised position, give the appearance of an alien spaceship hovering over the ground.

The house, which looks out over Ransom Canyon and the blue waters of the lake below, is uninhabited and unfinished inside. In February 2022, the home was sold by the late owner's daughter and plans are afoot to turn it into a vacation rental, although many people consider this a far-fetched idea.

The house was built more than 30 years ago by Robert Bruno and completed shortly before his death in 2008. The Steel House is located about 15 minutes east of Lubbock, in the community of Ransom Canyon.

The Science Spectrum & Omni Theater features more than 250 permanent, interactive exhibits spread over three floors. In addition to the permanent exhibits, there is an ever changing series of traveling shows.

The center offers live animal shows, where you can get up close and personal with a wide variety of critters from around the world. The Omni Theater is another popular tourist attraction here, showing feature films on a giant screen.

The Lubbock Children's Museum , geared towards kids five years old and younger, is included with the regular admission. The Science Spectrum & Omni Theater has the city's only aquarium, and the aquatic animals featured are all from the Brazos River watershed.

The Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark is on the campus of Texas Tech University, directly west of the Berl Huffman Athletic Complex.

Hodges Park is a large natural environment park that is along the northern bank of the Bow River. The park is to honor former Calgary Alderman Dale Hodges in recognition of his over 25 years of public service and his contributions to the Town.

Aztalan State Park was established in 1952. It is a National Historic Landmark and contains one of Wisconsin’s most important archaeological sites, showcasing an ancient Middle-Mississippian village that thrived between A.D. 1000 and 1300.

The park covers 172 acres (70 ha) along the Crawfish River.

Mr. Hyer named the place Aztalan because, according to Humboldt, the Aztecs, or ancient inhabitants of Mexico, had a tradition that their ancestors came from a country in the north, which they called Aztalan.

The possibility that these may have been remains of their occupancy, suggested the idea of restoring the name.

Located in the Texas Tech campus, The National Ranching Heritage Center is a place that’s been frozen in time – in 19th Century America, to be exact. It’s designed to give you a feel of what life was like on a working ranch all those years ago.

Visit the old, authentic buildings and see what they were like to live in through superb indoor displays and exhibits. Best of all, the center hosts exhibits and activities that focus on specific aspects of ranching history, like their History of Beef exhibit.

The Caviel Museum of African-American History is just one of the projects hosted by the Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council. 7. Remember a rock n’ roll icon

One of America’s most beloved icons of rock ‘n roll was born in Lubbock. The Buddy Holly Center is noted for containing the famous Fender Stratocaster recovered from the airplane crash that took his life. Also on display are his iconic horn-rimmed glasses, which also survived the crash, and other personal items, guitars, and paraphernalia.

You’ll know you’re in the right area when you see the statue of Holly and his guitar and close by a huge sculpture of the glasses that made him famous.

8. See what a real heavy metal house looks like

Just a little way down the road from Lubbock you’ll find a really oddly-shaped building standing on a small hill. It’s not a bizarre spaceship or even a sculpture. It’s a house-made entirely of steel, by artist Roberto Bruno. It’s even more remarkable for being entirely hand-crafted, a real personal achievement for Bruno who worked on it for 35 years!

Sadly, the house isn’t architecturally perfect, but it can be visited by curious tourists. It’s quite a marvel to see, despite not being finished.

9. Catch the Wind

Of all the things you might expect would have a museum dedicated to it, windmills would not be at the top of your list. Yet the American Wind Power Center is the largest of its kind in the world, and one of the most popular things to do in Lubbock. The park has over 160 different types of windmills on display, as well as other related items and paraphernalia.

Many of the structures are rare, including 1920-era electricity-generating wind machines. Several of the units remarkable still generate power and water, which is either used by the museum or sold back into the city power grid.

Lubbock is experiencing above-average economic growth, which makes it a fast-growing city. As a result, crime stats temporarily trended upwards around 2011-2015. In recent years, though, crime rates have been declining.

The National Ranching Heritage Center, or the NRHC, spans an impressive 16 acres and has an amazing 48 buildings on it, some of which date back to the 18th century. The NRHC has been lovingly preserved and can be visited throughout the year, when guests here can take a tour of the center and learn how life would have been in days gone by for the ranchers who lived and worked here. There are also events held throughout the year, including during holiday season such as Candlelight at the Ranch in December, so make sure you check what’s on when you are in town.

2. Buddy Holly Center

One of Lubbock’s most famous sons is the musical genius Buddy Holly, and with that in mind visitors should head to the Buddy Holly Center in the Depot Entertainment District of the city, itself also something of a cultural landmark. The center features a static exhibit that will tell you all about Buddy Holly’s life and impressive musical career, and you will find period artifacts that belonged to the musician as well as anecdotes and other antique memorabilia. Part of the center is also the Allison House which was the childhood house of Jerry Ivan Allison who was a drummer for Buddy Holly’s band The Crickets, and who collaborated with Holly over the years to write some of their greatest hits. The house is much as the Allison family left it, and there are antiques that will give guests a unique glimpse into this special time in the history of the house.

3. Silent Wings Museum

Many people won’t know that Lubbock was once a training ground for glider pilots during the Second World War, and with that in mind the Silent Wings Museum is now dedicated to their memory. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the men who served their country as American Glider Pilots, and will tell visitors the history of the Glider Program through a series of engaging exhibits. There is a C-47 plane on display as well as a theater and a Second World War antique glider which has been lovingly restored.

4. CapRock Winery

Nestled just outside of the center of Lubbock is the CapRock Winery which is known primarily for its gorgeous architecture and stunning vineyards. The wines here are a range of both red and white varieties, and as the winery has been here since the early 1990s, they certainly know what they are doing when it comes to wine production. You can come here and visit the tasting rooms to sample the latest blends and pick up a bottle or two to take home with you as a souvenir of your trip.

5. Caviel Museum of African American History

The Caviel Museum of African American History is one of the newest museums in Lubbock, so with that in mind make sure you check out this relative newcomer to find out all about African-American history in the region. The museum aims to tell the story of this history through a range of exhibits that include artwork as well as period artifacts and antiques. Permanent exhibits at the museum also feature displays that tell the stories of prominent local figures who helped to pioneer African-American history in Lubbock.

6. Cactus Theater

The Cactus Theater certainly has a very Texas-themed name, but it is also something of a historic landmark, having first opened its doors in the 1930s. At the time it was the first theater of its kind in Lubbock, and was slowly and painstakingly restored in the 1990s when it reopened after several years of closure. The theater is now known for its performances that include Broadway shows, musicals, live theater, and concerts, so if you are in the area make sure you check out what’s on.

7. American Wind Power Center

If you want to come to the largest windmill museum in the world then you need to head to the American Wind Power Center which has over 170 preserved windmills that stretch over 28 acres. As well as the gorgeous scenery here which takes in lush landscapes and grassy hills, you will also learn all about the interesting history of wind power in the United States. There is over 33,000 square feet of exhibition space here to be enjoyed, including windmills, replica houses, and even a G-scale train that runs through the museum.

8. Museum of Texas Tech University

Lubbock is known for being the home of the Texas Tech University, so with this in mind it stands to reason that there is a museum dedicated to the university here as well. The museum features over 5 million exhibits related to Texas Tech and you can learn all about arts, natural sciences, and humanities subjects that are studied here. There is also the Moody Planetarium that has laser and star gazing shows here daily, so budding astrologers should not miss the chance to come here for a whistle-stop tour of the night sky.

9. Ballet Lubbock

Ballet Lubbock was first established in 1969 and is known for being one of the premium cultural experiences in all of Lubbock. If you happen to be here during the holidays then you are in for a treat as you can catch a performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ which is performed every year by Ballet Lubbock. Throughout the rest of the year there are other shows and performances held by the dance company, so be sure to check what’s on when you are passing through so that you can take in the talent of these local dancers.

10. Bayer Museum of Agriculture

The Bayer Museum of Agriculture is also known as the American Museum of Agriculture, and is dedicated to the strong history of farming in the Lubbock area. To that end, the museum has a range of exhibits that will take visitors back in time to the days when agriculture was just getting started here, and you can expect to find a range of antique items on display. Some of these include old-fashioned pedal tractors as well as a model of a blacksmith’s studio from the 1920s. There are also galleries dedicated to the history of cotton production in Lubbock and many of the exhibits are interactive in order to give you a hands on experience as you walk through the agricultural history of this city.

11. Charles Adams Gallery

Part of the Lubbock Cultural District, the Charles Adams Gallery is known as one of the hottest spots in town if you are looking for an evening of art and culture. The gallery has a variety of both static and rotating galleries that feature a range of art work, including local, regional, and international pieces. In the past the gallery has featured works by powerhouse American artists such as Andy Warhol, so make sure that you check out what is on when you are in town, especially if you want to find out more about art in this part of the United States.

12. Joyland Amusement Park

Nestled in Mackenzie Park, Joyland Amusement Park is known for having over 30 rides that will appeal to visitors of all ages who want to visit. These include rides for adrenalin-junkies such as roller coasters and log flumes, or you can enjoy something more relaxing in the form of old fashioned carousels and arcade games. You will also find a range of traditional all-American amusement park snacks here, and as there are rides to suit all age ranges, this provides fun for all the family if you happen to be in the area.

13. Legacy Play Village

If you want to learn about the history of the South Plains then this is the place to come, as Legacy Play Village is dedicated to teaching children all about this period in time. The village was built by local Lubbock residents and has a range of pavilions and picnic area and is the perfect place for children to explore as they also take in the history of this part of Lubbock.

14. Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark

If you want to know more about how human life first came to Lubbock then make sure you visit the Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark. Here you will find this amazing preserve that shows evidence of human life from 12,000 years ago, and there are archeological and historical treasures dotted around the landmark to fill you in on the cultural significance of this area. There is a 3 mile trail here where you can hike to the Yellow House Canyon and there are a range of events held throughout the year that will tell visitors more about the archeological significance of this area, such Archeology in Action nights where excavation crews actually work in front of visitors. If you want to know more about how the first Americans would have lived in this region then this is definitely not to be missed during a trip here.

15. Mackenzie Park

Majestic Mackenzie Park sprawls over an impressive 248 acres in the city, and as such this is also the largest area of parkland in the city of Lubbock. The park has a huge range of activities for visitors to enjoy, including a newly installed and fully serviced golf course, as well as the well-loved Joyland Amusement Park which sits in the center. There are more low key activities here such as a disc gold course, and even a unique Prairie Dog Town, where visitors can see these cute indigenous animals in their natural habitat. There are hiking and equestrian trails all over this area, so you can explore the park in a range of different ways, and there are also delightful gardens dotted across the landscape that tell the story of Lubbock.

Visit Wine Country

More than 90 percent of the wine grapes grown in Texas are grown in the High Plains region, so Lubbock’s wine scene is thriving.

English Newsom Cellars offers tastings and tours. All of their wines are made exclusively from their own grapes, making them one of only a handful of wineries in the country that have full control over everything from how the grapes are grown to how the wine is produced and bottled.

McPherson Cellars has been in the McPherson family for more than 40 years. The winery is located in Lubbock’s Depot Entertainment District inside a restored Coca-Cola bottling plant, and the wines have won more than 600 medals in various competitions.

Llano Estacado Winery is the largest and bestselling premium winery in Texas. Since 1976, when they put West Texas on the viticultural map, they’ve been winning domestic and international awards.

If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, West Texas Wine Tours will take you on a 6-hour tour in a limo bus to learn about West Texas wine culture and visit several wineries.

Discover The Cultural District

Lubbock’s support of the arts is evident in the fact that the city was the first to be recognized as a cultural district by the state of Texas.

On a visit, you can explore world-class venues such as the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts , a visual and performing arts center located in the heart of the cultural district. The main building houses four art galleries that host more than 20 exhibitions each year. The 159-seat Firehouse Theatre hosts concerts, dance performances, theater productions, and film programs. Also on campus are the Christine DeVitt Icehouse Gallery, Clay Studio, Graffiti Education Building, and an outdoor plaza and stage.

Next, explore the Charles Adams Studio Project , a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to developing and sustaining a working artists’ community. View the artist studio spaces and then participate in a workshop. The Charles Adams Gallery features work by regional artists.

Cactus Theater

Catch A Show In The Original Live Music Capital Of Texas

Live music is a nightly occurrence in this mecca for singers and songwriters. Take in a live performance at one of the local bars, a tribute show at the Cactus Theater, or an arena performance at the United Supermarkets Arena.

The Cactus Theater opened in 1938 as a movie theater featuring 720 seats. In 1993, the building was purchased by Lubbock music producer Don Caldwell to provide a venue for West Texas performers.

Located on the Texas Tech campus, the United Supermarkets Arena is a 15,000-seat multipurpose facility that hosts performers such as Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, and Elton John, plus sporting events.

Learn About Buddy Holly’s Life And Career

The newly opened Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences is a cornerstone of the downtown revitalization project and will be the future home of the city’s ballet and symphony. In addition to two theaters, the campus includes an event space, a bistro, and a ballet academy. The iconic guitar wall is a sculptural installation designed by Texas artist Brad Oldham and depicts Buddy Holly playing a Stratocaster. The sculpture is made from 9,000 guitar picks.

At the Buddy Holly Center , you can learn about the brief life and blazing musical career of Buddy Holly, a Lubbock native. View the displays and watch the documentary film that chronicle Holly’s life and his impact on the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the worldwide music scene.

In addition to Buddy Holly, exhibits highlight other musicians of the era. Also on the property is the J.I. Allison House, where J.I. Allison, drummer for The Crickets, lived as a teenager and where he and Holly wrote many hit songs, including “That’ll Be the Day.”

Watch Prairie Dogs Play

The cuteness factor is overwhelming at Prairie Dog Town , a wildlife park where you can watch prairie dogs in their natural habitat. This free park was established in the early 1930s as the first protected prairie dog colony of its kind and started with four dogs and two burrows. The colony was moved to its current location at Mackenzie Park in 1935. A 2004 survey found that the park is the fifth-most-visited attraction in Lubbock by visitors from outside the city.

For lunch, head to Evie Mae’s to sample barbecue that topped Texas Monthly ’s top 10 list of best barbecue joints. Evie Mae’s uses oak wood because of its efficient heat curve and mild smoke, and the flavor seeps in from the smoked wood. Order a combo plate to sample a variety of meats, and go for the green chile cheese grits as a side.

Las Brisas Southwest Steakhouse

For dinner, head to local favorite Las Brisas Southwest Steakhouse . Choose from seafood, Southwestern-style dishes, and steaks cooked at 1,800 degrees. To really savor the steaks and unique toppings, try the filet duo with two 5-ounce filet medallions, one topped with a crab beurre blanc and the other with a wild mushroom peppercorn sauce. It’s served with vegetables and truffle mashed potatoes.

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.

The Book of Mormon

Carol of Lights 

The Carol of Lights is one of Texas Tech University’s largest annual events. The event begins with university choir holiday performances which are followed by the famous lightshow. The crowd celebrates as the campus illuminates with hundreds of thousands of red and white holiday lights. Hosted every December, join the multitude of attendees to celebrate this holiday season the Red Raider way.
