Plymouth Voyager

The original Plymouth Voyager was a twin of the Dodge B-series van from 1974 to 1983. Beginning in 1984 the Voyager name was applied to a new vehicle based on the Plymouth Reliant car. It was first introdouced as a "magic wagon", meaning that is was very similar to a station wagon, however it had more cargo room and removeable seats. The Voyager minivan, along with the similar Dodge Caravan (later joined by the Chrysler Town and Country ) and the French Renault Espace were the first modern minivans; the Chrysler minivans are credited with creating the entire market segment for these vehicles in North America.

The Grand Voyager minivan was longer than the Voyager in both length and wheelbase, and had more cargo space. In addition, engine choices were different in most years to compensate for the greater weight of the Grand Voyager. Otherwise, the two vehicles were substantially the same.

Together with it's nameplate variants, the Dodge Caravan , Chrysler Voyager , Chrysler Town & Country and Volkswagen Routan, the Chrysler minivans have ranked as the 13th bestselling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold. [1]

The first Plymouth Voyager was manufactured from 1974-1983 as a rebadged Dodge Sportsman with 12-15 passenger capacity. The Voyager was Plymouth's first truck-bodied vehicle in many decades.

Generation I 1984-1990

This Generation I Voyager minivan used the Chrysler S platform, which was closely related to the K-cars ( Plymouth Reliant and Dodge Aries ). The Voyager was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1985. [2] A three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a five-speed manual were available with the four-cylinder engines, including the turbocharged 2.5 L engine offered only in 1989 and 1990.

For 1987 the Voyager received minor cosmetic updates as well as the introduction of the Grand Voyager, which was built on a longer wheelbase adding more cargo room. It was available only with SE or LE trim.

The Generation I Voyager minivan was offered in three trim levels; low base , middle SE , and high LE , the latter bearing woodgrain-imprinted vinyl on the sides.

On 1984-1986 Voyagers, five-passenger seating was standard on all three models. The five-passenger arrangement consisted of two front bucket seats and a rear three-passenger bench seat. On base and SE models, the front buckets could be replaced by a 40/60 split three-passenger bench seat, bringing the total number of occupants to six. Seven-passenger seating was an option on SEs and LEs, with dual front buckets, a middle two-passenger bench, and a rear three-passenger bench. SE models could seat up to eight, with both the additional middle two-passenger bench and three-passenger front bench. So, depending on configuration, the base model could seat up to six, the SE could seat up to eight, and the LE could seat up to seven. On base models, the front buckets were low-back items, upholstered with plain cloth or vinyl. On SEs, the buyer could choose between low-back buckets with deluxe cloth or high-back buckets in upgraded vinyl. LEs came standard with high-back front buckets, upholstered in either luxury cloth or luxury vinyl.

For 1987 the six- and eight-passenger options were withdrawn, leaving seating for five standard and for seven optional on the base and SE, and seating for seven with high-back front buckets standard on the LE, Grand SE, and Grand LE. Deluxe cloth upholstery was now standard on base and all SE models, with the luxury vinyl optional on SEs. On LEs, luxury cloth came standard and for the first time, leather seats were available on the LE models.

Generation II (1991-1995)

plymouth voyager rallye

The Voyager was extensively redesigned for 1991, with more aerodynamic styling. They still used the S platform, though it was renamed the "AS platform". These were the last Voyagers that were derived from the Chrysler K platform . The trim levels for the Voyager were the base SE , midline LE , and highline LX ; Grand Voyager trim levels were base SE and highline LE . The SE offered buyers the widest choice of option packages [ verification needed ] , while the LE came with a great deal of standard equipment. The LX was available only in the short-wheelbase version, and was marketed as a more of a sport-luxury van, [ verification needed ] and came with the most standard equipment of them all, including alloy wheels, fog lamps, and wide array of power-operated features. The LE, however, could be ordered with all of these options at extra cost. Although the LX base price was higher than an LE, the LE could be ordered in the extended wheel base model with most of the options featured on the LX, thereby making the Grand Voyager LE the top of the line.

Interiors were much more differentiated in this generation than on the first, which shared many interior components with the Plymouth Reliant on which it was based, including an identical instrument panel and many interior trim pieces, to reduce development and production costs on a vehicle whose success was far from assured. [2]

In later years various trim packages were offered on SE models. The "Sport Wagon" package available from 1993-1995 featured accent color (gray) bumpers and molding, fog lamps, and special aluminum wheels. The "Rallye" package offered in 1995 was more luxury-oriented, with lower body two-tone paint — regardless of upper body color, the lower body was painted "Driftwood Beige" — silver aluminum wheels, and special badging. The font first used for the Rallye's badging was adopted for all of Plymouth's badging from 1996 onward.

Only badging and minor cosmetics differentiated the Voyager from its Dodge Caravan corporate twin. The headlamp trim was chromed on the Voyager but not on the Caravan, and the Voyager's park and turn signal lamps were shorter than those of the Caravan. The Voyager's taillights were horizontally corrugated, while the Caravan's, though the same size and shape, had had a black-mask effect. Voyagers used the chrome or body-colored eggcrate grille characteristic of all Plymouth models of the time, while the Caravan's bore the crosshair design used on Dodge's other models. The Chrysler Town and Country shared the Voyager's headlamps and taillights, but had its own chrome waterfall grille.

This generation of vans brought additional innovations, such as:

  • "Quad Command" bucket seating (1991)
  • Integrated child safety seats (1992), improved design with recliners (1994)
  • Available anti-lock brakes (1991)
  • First driver's side airbag in a minivan (1991), made standard (1992), and first dual front airbags (1994)
  • First minivan to meet 1998 U.S. federal safety standards (1994)

However, the turbocharged engine and Convert-A-Bed feature were dropped. [2]

  • 1991–1995 3.3 L EGA V6, 150 hp (112 kW) 1991-1993, 162 hp (121 kW) 1994-1995

  • 1994–1995 3.8 L EGH V6, 162 hp (121 kW)

Throughout this generation, the original sticker prices for the Voyager covered about a $10,000 range from a base to an LE AWD . [ verification needed ] The prices below are rounded to the nearest 25 dollars.

  • 1991 - $13,250-$21,275 USD
  • 1992 - $13,500-$23,000 USD
  • 1993 - $14,250-$24,000 USD
  • 1994 - $15,525-$25,550 USD
  • 1995 - $16,150-$25,750 USD

Year-to-year changes

  • 1989: Turbocharged four-cylinder engine available with either automatic or manual transmission.
  • 1991: Second generation minivans released. A driver's side airbag was made standard for this year. Integrated child safety seats in the second row bench were optional on 1992 Voyagers. The Grand Voyager was available with a lower-cost powertrain. A 142 hp (106 kW) 3.0 L V6 and a 3-speed automatic could be substituted for the standard 150 hp (112 kW) 3.3 L V6 with its 4-speed automatic. The 5-speed manual transmission could once again be paired with the base engine, which was now the 2.5 liter four instead of the original 2.2 liter four.
  • 1993: On 7-passenger models, the optional "Quad Command" bucket seats replaced the middle bench seat. The right bucket tilted forward to ease entry and exit to the rearmost bench. The front shoulder belts became height-adjustable and rear shoulder belts had lower anchor points.
  • 1994: New bumpers and body moldings, and a redesigned dashboard appeared on all 1994 Voyagers. New safety features which included a passenger-side airbag and side door-guard beams enabled the Voyager to meet all passenger car safety requirements through 1998. A cassette player became standard on all models but the base. Under the hood, a 162 hp (121 kW) 3.8 L V6 was a new option for top-of-the-line Grand Voyager LE models. The 3.3 L V6 had been upgraded to produce 162 hp (121 kW) as well. For 1994 the "10 Year Anniversary Edition" was an option on Voyager SE models; it had unique two-tone paint and badges.
  • 1995: No major changes were made for 1995, except for the new Rallye option package available on SE models. Rallye models came with special silver-accent wheels and special two-toned paint on the lower body.

Generation III (1996-2000)

plymouth voyager rallye

The 1996 redesign used the Chrysler NS platform and included a driver's-side sliding door, a first. The manual transmission was dropped. The vinyl woodgrain-appearance side paneling was no longer available. For this generation the Voyager was available in only base and mid-level SE models, the luxury LX and LE models, as well as the Sport weren't offered, as they were in the previous generation. It appears that "LE" models, of this generation were still sold in Canada [ verification needed ] . Also available was the Rallye (later renamed Expresso ) trim package. Rallyes were simply an SE model with more upgrades (they were still badged as "SE's", with the "Rallye" badge on the front doors, rather than with the "Plymouth", "Voyager", and "SE" badges on the back). From 1997 onward, regular SE's received a "Plymouth" badge in the place of the "Rallye" or "Expresso" badges. Also, for the "Expresso" trim level, there was special grille insignia consisting of two silver lines on a black circular background. Possibly a new logo for it's retro styled future. Four-wheel drive was reintroduced in 1997. The Voyager was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997.

The Chrysler "Pentastar" logo appeared on the keys, steering wheel and on the side mouldings immediately behind the front wheels. The grille now features Plymouth's new "Sailboat" logo.

Base models of the Voyager were offered in most states with either a 2.4 L four-cylinder or a 3.0 L Mitsubishi V6 engine, except in California and several northeastern states, where the Mitsubishi V6 didn't meet emissions standards. In those locales, the 3.3 L engine was offered as the V6 option from 1997 through 2000. The manual transmission, never popular, was dropped. The 2.4 L four-cylinder engine produced more power than the 3.0 L Mitsubishi engine had in the first two generations.

Easy-Out Roller Seats In 1996, Chrysler introduced a system of seats to simplify installation, removal, and re-positioning— marketed as Easy-Out Roller Seats . When installed, the seats are latched to floor-mounted strikers. When unlatched, eight rollers lift each seat, allowing it to be rolled fore and aft. Tracks have locator depressions for rollers, thus enabling simple installation. Ergonomic levers at the seatbacks release the floor latches single handedly without tools and raise the seats onto the rollers in a single motion. Additionally, seatbacks were designed to fold forward. Seat roller tracks are permanently attached to the floor and seat stanchions are aligned, fascillitating the longitiudinal rolling of the seats. Bench seat stanchions were moved inboard to reduce bending stress in the seat frames, allowing them to be lighter.

When configured as two and three person benches (available through Generation IV), the Easy Out Roller Seats could be unwieldy. Beginning in 2001, second and third row seats became available in a 'quad' configuration — bucket or captain chairs in the second row and a third row three-person 50/50 split "bench" — with each section weighing under 50 lbs. The Easy-out system remained in use through Generation V — where certain models featured a two-person bench and the under-floor compartments from the Stow'n Go system.

  • 1998-2000 3.8 L EGH V6, 180 hp (134 kW)

There were not as many trim levels available as the previous generation, which is why the sticker prices didn't go as high. The prices below are rounded to the nearest 25 dollars.

  • 1996 - $16,625-$20,050 USD
  • 1997 - $17,225-$20,750 USD
  • 1998 - $17,550-$22,600 USD
  • 1999 - $18,200-$23,075 USD
  • 2000 - $18,675-$24,075 USD
  • 1997: A CD player was a new option. Other than that, only minimal changes.
  • 1998: Grocery bag hooks were added to the rearmost bench. The Rallye option/decor package was replaced by the Expresso option/decor package (which included new wheel covers, new interior cloth, new 1st and 2nd row bucket seats, a CD player, and a body-colored grille).
  • 1999: A 3.8 L V6 was added to 1999 Voyagers; it was already available on the Caravan and Town & Country. A small cargo net between the front seats, additional standard equipment, and child-safety seats in the second-row buckets were added to the Voyager this year. Air conditioning was made standard on SE and Expresso models. In Canada, the 3.0L V6 was standard equipment.
  • 2000: Now standard was air conditioning, power windows, and power locks(the latter two standard on SE models only). A rear-seat video entertainment system was newly available, dealer-installed on all models.

In 1999 Plymouth's demise was announced, resulting in the 2000 Voyager/Grand Voyager models in the US doing double duty as both Plymouths and Chryslers .

Generation IV (2001-2004 Chrysler Voyager)

For the fourth generation of the minivan in 2001, the Plymouth Voyager was rebadged as the Chrysler Voyager in the US. It was offered in the short wheelbase only. The Chrysler Voyager was renamed Town & Country for 2004, so there was both a short and long wheelbase minivan sold under that name.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Great interior and exterior design. Class-leading features. Price.
  • 3.8-liter V-6 is not available, not the most reliable vehicle on the road.

Changes for 1997 include updated transmission software, an upgraded antilock brake system and an enhanced accident response system that unlocks the doors and turns on the interior lights if the front airbags deploy. Additionally, Plymouth has made improvements to the cabin insulation (to reduce noise and vibration) and cassette stereo units. Standard lighting elements now include front map lights and liftgate flood lamps; a cargo bay power point is also part of the deal. New options include an eight-way power driver seat and an overhead console with a trip computer, compass and outside temperature display. A Rallye decor package is available on SE models -- it includes a roof rack, tinted glass, alloy wheels and various silver accents and decals. Rounding out the changes are new wheel covers for the base model.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager 3dr Minivan and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

First Generation [ ]

The first generation Plymouth Voyager was a twin to the full-size Dodge Ram Van , differing only with a different grille, from 1974-1983.

Second Generation [ ]

In 1985 the Voyager won Car and Driver's Ten Best list. Three trim levels were offered for the Voyager. From 1984 to 1986 the Voyager had standard five-passenger seating. An option on SEs and LEs were seven-passenger seating. But an SE model could have a standard eight-passenger seating. In 1987 the six and eight-passenger seating was dropped.

Third Generation [ ]

Once again three trim lines were available for the Voyager. The "Sport Wagon" package came out in 1993. It was discontinued in 1995. Also in 1995 the "Rallye" package came out. It was more of a luxury package than the "Sport Wagon".

Fourth Generation [ ]

Something new on the Voyager was a sliding driver's side door. Only two models were available on the Voyager. The Rallye package was still available but was later named Expresso. In 1996 and 1997 the Voyager was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list.

CC Capsule: 1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE AWD – Not Dodging The Options

3-2-2013 003 (1280x852)

Just the other day I went with my folks to an antique show. As we were walking in, I noticed a woody Grand Voyager in the lot. I was drawn to its largely intact Di-Noc paneling, but did a double take when I saw how lavishly this Plymouth was equipped.

AWD - Copy

That’s right, ladies and germs, this is a full-boat Grand Voyager LE, with wood siding, alloy wheels, captain’s chairs in the second row and–wait for it–all-wheel drive!

3-2-2013 001 (1280x852)

Although the ’91 Chrysler minivans got new sheetmetal, interiors and other refinements, they still looked quite a bit like their 1984-90 forebears–and still had much in common under the skin. But AWD was new. A system engineered and built by Steyr-Puch in Austria, it was optional on all three flavors of Mopar’s “garageable van.”

1992DodgeCaravan

When I was 11, my mom finally gave up on Volvo station wagons (us three kids were getting too big and too immature for the single rear seat) and ordered a 1992 Grand Caravan ES in monochromatic white, with charcoal leather, captain’s chairs and AWD. Even then, I recall rarely seeing AWD minivans on the road. Figure 20+ years of attrition, and, well, I considered this Voyager quite a find.

3-2-2013 004 (1280x852)

It even had leather seating, a real rarity in a Plymouth, but I remember the LEs as being awfully plush. I think this one had to have been ordered new by a dealership as a “ringer” to put in the showroom. For one this loaded, I think most folks would have gone for the more prestigious Town & Country. In any event, it’s always nice to see a Plymouth still on the road! Even better, I found a mini CC at the show for fifty cents. You can’t beat that!

We used to have a fleet of Diesel powered, manufactured in Austria by Steyr-Puch, short wheelbase Caravan’s at the company in the late 90’s.

They were awful with their noisy and harsh working engines that were totally inappropriate in a car of that class. But beside them we also had two full-spec Caravan’s that looked similar to the one pictured here. In fact the only missing detail was the wood…

They were white, had leather seats and AWD. And… they were not much better than the Diesels…

Still not very fast, with rather spongy ride and nearly no handling at all. At least compared to VW Sharan that replaced them in 1999.

The only thing they did really, really well was cruising. And – looking at the condition of a pictured car – this one must have had a pretty easy life…

avatar

Were they manual transmission? I don’t know if any were sold in the US, but I was told by some engineers who went to a meeting in Spain that their rental car was a 5-speed Caravan.

Diesel, AWD, 5-speed minivans?

avatar

A former colleague drove a 1st-generation Caravan with a manual transmission, so they were offered stateside for some period. Pretty sure it wasn’t a 5-speed, though. My memory is a little hazy, but I want to say it was 3 on the tree.

He was a frugal fellow. Not sure that vehicle had any options.

I don’t think they were ever column-mounted manuals.

The only manual Caravan I ever drove was a floor-shift five-speed. The shifter was tucked down right next to the driver seat, low to the floor. You’d never know it was there until you reached for the normal column shifter and found air.

So yes, they were definitely offered in America, usually as a low-spec sort of tradesman’s van.

I also drove quite a few manual-equipped Aerostars back in the day. Fleet vehicles.

You can see the Caravan shifter tucked down there in this pic:

plymouth voyager rallye

Wow, the broken tachometer in that pic brings back memories of my Turismo. (Unless the driver shut the engine off while at redline.)

avatar

You could have spec’d a manual in all the early mini vans, even the Astro/Safari.

I think there were manual trans plastic “bullet train” GM vans made for export too.

avatar

If you dont know how to drive a diesel they will be slow.

I think I remember reading that the AWD option was pretty popular. ChryCo was late to the game with the flip & fold rear seat, because packaging issues made it impossible to offer both the foldable wayback seat and AWD. Since they were selling a lot of AWD models, they weren’t willing to give that up. So AWD stayed on the option list; foldable seat did not come until many years later.

avatar

Never thought I would be saying this, but those running boards really ruin the lines of this minivan.

avatar

A rather, uh, thrifty coworker of mine has a nearly identical one with the same running boards. The stuck out to me, as well. In fairness, the different color, non-woody junkyard sliding door does far more to throw off the lines.

I think he’s had it since it was new or almost new. He must be skilled in the black arts in order to keep one of these pieces of crap roadworthy in this part of the country that long.

Yep, fairly rare to see this combination of options. As a kid, I thought the AWD was a gimmick until my uncle had one as a Pioneer sales rep in the late 90s. It matched our Cherokee on some snowy winter pheasant hunts. I’d still take the Jeep for total off-road ability and especially ground clearance, but the MoPar AWD was no joke.

Reliability of the AWD, on the other hand…

Separate memory: the two youngest, hippest, and richest moms in my neighborhood both had Chrysler T&C minivans in the mid-90s. FULLY loaded, one in green, one in white, gaudy gold wheels and pinstripes. It was the last gasp of fancy domestic minivans; from about ’95 on, it was special edition SUV (Eddie Bauer, Orvis) or nothing in the ‘burbs.

In reality, the AWD was reasonably reliable. It was the A604 (or the variously renamed band-aid solutions that the 604 received) that was the problem; it couldn’t handle the extra load of the AWD system.

Great point. I was lumping them together.

If it’s any comfort to Chrysler owners, Consumer Reports rates AWD Toyota Siennas as having Worse Than Average reliability.

I have a very close friend that has an AWD Sienna that has had nothing but problems with it since the first year of ownership. He hates it!!

Haha, my mom was one of those moms when I was a kid. We had a loaded ’90 Chrysler T&C — the first year of the T&C, and in the original bodystyle only for that one year. White, woody package, white painted rims. Even though it was only a mildly dressed up Grand Caravan, people treated it like it was the arrival of some amazing new luxury model (much like when the Navigator was introduced).

I distinctly remember the Infinity stereo with the joystick, the shallow cupholders, and the drawer under the passenger seat. I thought the remote-controlled power vents in the third row were the coolest thing ever (those cranks on lower models were just so ghetto, I thought snobbishly).

The van was a smash hit in the neighborhood and served us well. My parents replaced it with a ’94 Deville, so any and all cool points were not just erased, but we plunged into severe coolness debt for the next six years.

avatar

This may be a rare find, but in my mind still not as rare as the mid- 90s Voyager with the “Espresso” trim package. Years ago a coworker had one, and I always chuckled as I walked by her car and saw the wild and brash cursive script on the side of the car.

Espresso? What the hell does that even mean? Don’t forget we’re talking basic minivans here.

I could never tell what options one would get with that package, other than the goofy decals. But I’m not a minivan expert, and I’m sure there had to be something worthwhile to it.

It was actually Expresso, with an ‘x’. It could also be had on Neons.

I think it was mainly a sticker & cloth package.

Wasn’t it essentially the value package, à la SXT?

It could be called a “value” package, but it wasn’t the “base” vehicle. Back then, the base vehicle, (rather than having it’s own call-out) was just called, get this, the base model. You could purchase a Plymouth Voyager (base), a Plymouth Voyager SE, a Voyager LE, a Voyager Rallye…etc.,etc.

Your typical base vehicles were rarely seen on dealer lots, though. Mostly a fleet sales and rental type of car.

So in the end, yes, somewhat similar to the SXT…one step up from base.

Latte-proof upholstery.

A minivan for the Starbucks set?

avatar

“Expresso” was a decor package on late-90’s Plymouth Neons, Breezes, and Voyagers. It basically added a few more features like upgraded audio system and nicer interior cloth. Neons and Breezes got dark cloth with colorful spots and specks. For some reason Voyagers didn’t get the fun colors.

It was similar to Rallye, Sport Wagon, and 10th Anniversary packages of the past. Just something to advertise to get buyers a little more excited and into showrooms. I actually see a good number of Expressos (relative to the number of Voyagers I see). I can’t say I’ve seen a woody LE in few years though.

plymouth voyager rallye

My wife’s family hauler is actually a ’98 Expresso! Ours is definitely not a base model, in fact it’s got every option aside from Leather. Which is.. odd. And by every option I mean the 3.8 V6 (not anemic 3.0 or 3.3), rear captains, rear A/C, Infinity stereo, alloys, etc. It’s totally oddly equipped.

It also refuses to die, as much as I want it to. It just likes to break in little annoying ways that I can fix < 4 hours for < $100. As long as the kids still spill stuff and track mud and sand into a vehicle, I guess it's what we've got.

We had a “Sport Wagon” version.

I am still unsure what was sporty about it, as I was only a teenager at the time, but it did have some nicer wheels, cladding, and bumper mounted foglamps to dress it up. I believe this replaced the rare “Voyager LX” after the 91 restyle.

It looked like this:

plymouth voyager rallye

The adjective “Sport” is abused in marketing. I can think of Ritter “Sport” chocolates (allegedly made to fit in sport jackets, another odd application), & we have an aging but good Bernina “Sport” sewing machine.

Yes, for many years the sport model had the word SPORT painted somewhere on it, a body-color grille, and maybe one size larger tires.

Garageable? More like garbageable. Lots of reports of quality problems from day one.

But, evidently, whatever issues they had weren’t bad enough to keep Chrysler atop the minivan pile for decades (unlike the equally successful 1957 ‘Forward Look’ cars whose second year sales plummeted because quality was so bad). Even today, of the few remaining ‘true’ minivans, Chrysler still perenially maintains the number one sales position.

With that said, Chrysler’s SWB minivan was really a stroke of genius that, along with creating a whole new market segment, created a whole new suburban dweller descripton – the soccer mom.

I’ve always loved the concept and practicality of the SWB minivan (if not the execution), especially the original.

avatar

In reality, despite Chrysler maintaining that they were the number one minivan they really weren’t until later. The Aerostar was the number one selling name plate for many years, and once the Villager and Windstar came along Ford the company sold more minivans than any other mfg for a number of years.

avatar

Are you saying that the Aerostar outsold the combined sales of both the Chrysler minivans? I’d like to see some verification on that. If you’re hedging your statement by using the term “number one selling nameplate” by limiting it to just the Dodge Caravan, it’s not going to fly.

Great find! I’ve always had a soft spot for these “woody” vans, especially Plymouths. It’s amazing that this one actually has the available leather seats. They were a standalone option for some $1,500 extra. You’re probably right in that it was ordered as a showroom model. In any case it’s a cool and very rare car.

Minivans here mostly hail from Japan the Chryslers we have seem to be newer than this one and I do see quite a few so it looks like after the Jeeps entry into our market Chrysler was on a roll and the Voyagers I see do run unlike most of the Neons and other efforts.

In Norway many of these Plymouths (FWD) was sold with a 2.5 liter diesel engine from VM Motori and the Plymouths was badged as “Chrysler Voyager”. My father had a 3.3 liter V6 and I remember that it was a very good car. My dad often talks about it as the “best car I’ve ever had”. Before the Chrysler he had a Volvo 240 and twice Peugeot 505 GTi. Then the Voyager and then two new Peugeot. He would have been buying an american car if it wasn’t for the Norwegian taxes.

The Chrysler Corp. got a pretty bad reputation here i Norway because of the dieselengine. Samme with Jeep.

NZ Chryslers have the same diesel option even the 300s ours are Belgian sourced I didnt know it was no good as they still use them.

The problems was that the engine couldn’t handle temperature over ca. 90 degrees C, if that happened the heads and headgaskets have to be replacet. This happend quite often as many of the cars was used to tow a trailer or had heavy load. This is the 2.5 R4 engine from VM motori, earlyer on the Chrysler Corp. used a 2.1 liter Diesel from Renault/Peugeot/Citroën. But I’ll think that was just in the Jeep’s.

The 3.3 liter V6 Chrysler Corp. engine was the best I belive, but the automatic Ultradrive had som issues early on.

avatar

This is probably one of the last of the “loaded” Plymouths. Once the Chrysler Town & Country minivan hit the showrooms, there was no reason for an awd Plymouth (with leather, yet) on the other side of the same showroom. I still think that Chrysler missed an opportunity to market the swb minivans and more economical cars as Plymouths.

avatar

Probably but by the time this minivan came out, there was often nothing more than a nametag and possible a grille to distinguish most Dodges and Plymouths across the car lines. At least in the 80s there was some more (albeit still slight since it usually did not involve body changes) distinction. I saw SWB minivans all the way until about 2008.

Minivans were popular from the get go, but got really popular after they came out with the LWB version and the V6 for 1987. I remember when my sister purchased one (yes she did pass on the Astro because it was RWD) and it the dealmaker was the extra room in back. The 4 cylinders were OK, but they were slow especially when the vehicle was loaded. The later models with the 3.3 & 3.8 V6s were pretty fast for a minivan. The vans I have come to see are decently reliable except for the 4speed Ultradrive in the early 90s that often stuck in 2nd gear.

Dodge offered a Turbo 2.5 I4 in 1989 and 1990 to help rectify the power problem, but the V6 proved to be far more popular than the turbo. A fair percentable of the already small percentage of turbos were 5 speeds. If I am not mistaken, the turbo was only available on SWB.

Part of the problem with the Ultradrive was that that was the transmission that drove the switch from the standard Dex/Merc that most every automatic in the US took to the new ATF+3/4. People would not use the proper fluid causing problems in driveability. Additionally, the Ultradrive was electrically operated and like the V864 in the Cadillac in 1981, the computer often got stumped as to when to shift causing constant shifting in the transition zones. Eventually they worked out an algoritmn that took care of most of the problems but the Ultradrive was plagued with reliability problems for quite a long time. My sister’s transmission had to be rebuilt at around 81K when it stuck in 2nd gear and would not budge from that. Apparently that was the default mode when the transmission detected a problem.

Chrysler hit the jackpot with the Stow-N-Go and the Swivel-N-Go seating. We have rented Caravans on trips before it is a novel and very useful feature much nicer than removing the seats.

plymouth voyager rallye

The SWB Voyagers are still amazing after all these years. Just came back from a trip to Florida (1300 miles each way) and my 95 Sport Wagon with 3.3L got 26 MPG consistently. Only had the second seat installed and still was able to haul 3 disassembled bikes, a TV, two pieces of luggage behind the second seat and still have great visibility out the rear.

We used to have a ’93 Grand Caravan. That rear seat was a bear to remove. The tranny was replaced when it was a couple years old and the paint began to peel off the roof by 2000. From what I remember, it was very thin and would flake right off, making me wonder if it was even bc/cc. The other thing that bothered me was the plasti-chrome trim on the sides looked like crap even when it was just a few years old. Ours had the styled rally wheels on it, the rest of it was a run of the mill blue Caravan. Had good power for what it was and didn’t handle or ride too badly. I thought the dustbuster vans looked cooler but these always seemed more rugged and practical.

Anyone that I know that has owned one of these either loved it or hated it. I know someone that had well over 180k on theirs and drove it into the ground. Another friend had problems from day one and sold his at around 50k because it was always in the shop.

Strange that you could get a Voyager this loaded, this would have been sharing showroom space with the Town & Country, which already came with everything this had extra, except the AWD.

True, Carmine. These vans could be optioned out so many different ways. I had a neighbor that had a loaded green Town and Country with tan leather – AWD – loved it and owned it for years.

Plymouth : Voyager Espresso 1999 white chrysler plymouth voyager espresso 7 passenger minivan w power pack

Mesa, Arizona

I buy storage units that have gone into default. Most of the items I sell here on eBay are things that I have found in those units. INCLUDES: 1999 White Chrysler Plymouth Voyager Espresso 7-Passenger Minivan with Power Package Options There is body damage but in my opinion the vehicle drives great. It looks like the previous owner(s) kept some maintenance records and most of their receipts. Additional Details & Some of the Options:- AM/FM, Tape & CD player ( forgot to check id CD player worked) - Air condition tested and works - Driver & passenger vanity mirrors (electric but didn't light up) - Says Infinity acoustic 10 model speakers on the door panels but I don't know if those are the speakers still installed - Electric seats were tested and work - Electric Windows were tested and work- (2) rear sliding doors- Child protection sliding door- Removable seats- Luggage rack- Storage drawer under passenger seat - There are several other options, I took a photo of the of the original manufacturer sticker so you can see the details. - I have a clean and clear title Known Issues: - There are stains on the upholstery and carpet - The two cords that hold the glove box in place when it's open are broken so it falls - The back and side have body damage - The gas cover is broken off (I have it but its broke) - The ignition key gives me problems turning sometimes. Sometimes it turns without issue and other times I need to spend 10 minutes trying to to turn it. - The roof lining inside is drooping - There are some cigarette holes in seat ( I saw a few on the passenger seat but their could be others) - The back door doesn't open. When I first bought the van the back door opened and closed but didn't quite close completely, it grabbed the latch but did not completely seal the door. I forced the door closed and now it wont open. - I only gave them a quick glance but the back tires appeared ok but the front look bad (low tread). - The electric locks for the front don't lock/unlock with the automatic button (but the back do. The electric mirrors weren't working either. These things could be a simple fix like replacing the fuses but I didn't try and troubleshoot the problems. I did not try every option so I cant guarantee that every option functions properly. If there is something specific you're wondering about just ask. - The overhead lights and electric vanity mirrors on the visors didn't light up (could be a fuse but don't know).- There may be other issues that I missed but I've tried to list any problems I noticed. With all that said, it has been a great minivan and has served me well. However, I am not a mechanic (nor mechanically inclined) and would recommend inspecting it yourself or having someone knowledgeable come look at it before you decide to buy it. Please see photos for product specifics. If there is a discrepancy between the information in the text description and information in the photos please email me and I will either make corrections or try and clarify. Plymouth Voyager

Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler . From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan , along with the Dodge Caravan . As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide. [1]

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

For the 1974 model year, Plymouth marketed trucks under its brand (for the first time since 1942). The Voyager was the Plymouth counterpart of the Dodge Sportsman passenger van alongside the Trail Duster SUV (a counterpart of the Dodge Ramcharger ). In contrast to Dodge, the Voyager was marketed solely as a passenger van; in line with the Sportsman with seating options for 12 to 15 passengers. [2] [3]

Early versions of the Voyager were visually similar to their Dodge counterparts, centering Plymouth badging in the grille (as with Fargo vans and 1971–1973 Dodges). For 1978, the B-pillar underwent a redesign, placing the side door further forward; the dashboard was also redesigned (Dodge would use this design through 1997). Externally distinguished by a new grille, the exterior saw a shift of the Plymouth lettering from the grille to the hood.

For the 1979 model year, Chrysler introduced the second generation of the B-platform vans, marked by a longer front nose (and the discontinuation of big-block V8 engines). Indistinguishable from its Dodge Royal Sportsman counterpart, the revised parking lamps of the Voyager wrapped into the front fenders and the front featured four rectangular headlamps. For 1981, Dodge vans adopted the "Ram van" model nameplate (in line with Dodge pickup trucks); with a lack of large "RAM" badging on the door, the Voyager saw more differentiation from its Dodge counterpart.

Following the 1983 model year, Plymouth discontinued the full-size Voyager, transferring the nameplate to the new minivan models. Thus, the 1983 full-size van would be the final full-size truck offered by the brand before its 2001 closure.

Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich had conceived their idea for a modern minivan during their earlier tenure at Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford II had rejected Iaccoca's and Sperlich's idea (and a prototype) of a minivan in 1974, then rumored to carry the name "Maxivan". Iaccoca followed Sperlich to Chrysler Corporation, and together they developed the T115 minivan — a prototype that was to become the Caravan and Voyager, known colloquially as the "Magic-wagons" (a term used in advertising).

The Chrysler minivans launched a few months ahead of the Renault Espace (the first MPV/minivan in Europe, initially presented to executives as a Talbot (which was made up of Chrysler Europe's disposed assets) in 1979, [4] but not launched until 1984), making them the first of their kind — effectively creating the modern minivan segment in the United States.

In 1984, Chrysler marketed the rebadged Plymouth variant of its new minivan as the Voyager, using the Chrysler's S platform, derived from the K-platform ( Plymouth Reliant and Dodge Aries ). The Voyager shared components with the K-cars including portions of the interior, e.g., the Reliant's instrument cluster and dashboard controls, along with the K-platform front-wheel drive layout and low floor, giving the Voyager a car-like ease of entry. The Voyager was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1985. [6]

For 1987, the Voyager received minor cosmetic updates as well as the May 1987 introduction of the Grand Voyager, which was built on a longer wheelbase adding more cargo room. It was available only with SE or LE trim.

First-generation Voyager minivans were offered in three trim levels: an unnamed base model, mid-grade SE , and high-end LE , the latter bearing simulated woodgrain paneling. A sportier LX model was added in 1989, sharing much of its components with the Caravan ES.

Safety features included 3-point seat belts for the front two passengers and lap belts for rear passengers. Standard on all Voyagers were legally mandated side-impact reinforcements for all seating front and rear outboard positions. Safety features such as airbags or ABS were not available. [6] The Voyager, along with the Dodge Caravan , are considered to be the first mass-produced vehicles to include dedicated cup holders . [7] [8]

Original commercials for the 1984 Voyager featured magician Doug Henning [9] as a spokesperson to promote the Voyager "Magic Wagon's" versatility, cargo space, low step-in height, passenger volume, and maneuverability. Later commercials in 1989 featured rock singer Tina Turner . [10] Canadian commercials in 1990 featured pop singer Celine Dion . [11]

1984-1986 Voyagers could be equipped for five, six, or seven passengers, with an eight-passenger variant available only in 1985. [12] Five-passenger seating, standard on all trim levels, consisted of two front bucket seats and an intermediate three-passenger bench seat. In 1985, on base and SE models, the front buckets could be replaced by a 40/60 split three-passenger bench seat, bringing the total number of occupants to six. Seven-passenger seating was an option on SEs and LEs, with dual front buckets, an intermediate two-passenger bench, and a rear three-passenger bench. Eight-passenger seating was available on SE models only, with both the additional middle two-passenger bench and the three-passenger front bench. Depending on the configuration, the base model could seat up to six, the SE could seat up to eight, and the LE could seat up to seven.

The two bench seats in the rear were independently removable (though not foldable), and the large three-seat bench could also be installed in the second-row location via a second set of attachment points on the van's floor, ordinarily hidden with snap-in plastic covers. This configuration allowed for conventional five-passenger seating with a sizable cargo area in the rear. The latching mechanisms for the benches were very intuitive and easy to operate.

On base models, the front buckets were low-back items, upholstered with plain cloth or vinyl. On SEs, the buyer could choose between low-back buckets in deluxe cloth or high-back buckets in upgraded vinyl. LEs came standard with high-back front buckets, upholstered in either luxury cloth or luxury vinyl.

In 1985 and 1986, there was also a five-passenger version with a back seat that could be folded flat with the pull of a handle into a bed that filled the rear compartment from the back of the front seats to the rear. This option was known as the Magic Camper. The Magic Camper back seat had an extra rear-facing cushion that formed the back-most section of the bed when folded flat and the seat, though very heavy, was removable. The Magic Camper option included a tent that attached magnetically to the side of the vehicle allowing access in and out of the sliding side door.

For 1987 the six- and eight-passenger options were withdrawn, leaving seating for five standard and seven optional on the base and SE, and seating for seven with high-back front buckets standard on the LE, Grand SE, and Grand LE. The deluxe cloth upholstery was now standard on base and all SE models, with the luxury vinyl optional on SEs. On LEs, luxury cloth came standard and for the first time, leather seats were available on the LE models.

1987-1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE 87-90 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE.jpg

For the first three years of production, two inline-4 engines with 2 barrel carburetors were offered. The base 2.2   L was from the Chrysler K-cars and produced 96   hp (72   kW) horsepower. The higher performance fuel-injected version of the 2.2   L engine later offered in the Chrysler K-cars was offered in the Voyager for the 1987 model year and remained the base engine until mid-1987. Alongside the 2.2   L, an optional Mitsubishi 2.6 L engine was available producing 104   hp (78   kW) . [13]

At launch, the Voyager's low horsepower to weight ratio had not been much of a concern. Its main competitors were the Toyota Van and the Volkswagen Vanagon , both of which offered similar performance. In mid-1987, the base 2.2   L I4 was replaced with a fuel-injected 2.5   L I4, which produced 100   hp (75   kW) , while the Mitsubishi G54B I4 was replaced with the new fuel-injected 3.0   L Mitsubishi V6 producing 136   hp (101   kW) in March of that year.

A turbocharged version of the base 2.5   L producing 150   hp (112   kW) was available in 1989 and 1990. Also in 1989, revisions to the Mitsubishi V6 increased output to 142   hp (106   kW) . In 1990, a new 150   hp (112   kW) 3.3   L V6 was added to the option list. Sales of the 2.5 turbo dwindled as a result, and it was dropped at the end of the year.

  • 1984–1987 2.2   L K I4 , 96   hp (72   kW) , 119   lb⋅ft (161   N⋅m)
  • 1984–1987 2.6 L Mitsubishi G54B I4, 104   hp (78   kW) , 142   lb⋅ft (193   N⋅m)
  • 1987½–1990 2.5   L K I4, 100   hp (75   kW) , 135   lb⋅ft (183   N⋅m)
  • 1987½–1988 3.0   L Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 , 136   hp (101   kW) , 168   lb⋅ft (228   N⋅m)
  • 1989–1990 2.5   L Turbo I4, 150   hp (112   kW) , 180   lb⋅ft (244   N⋅m)
  • 1989-1990 3.0   L Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 , 142   hp (106   kW) , 173   lb⋅ft (235   N⋅m)
  • 1990 3.3   L EGA V6 , 150   hp (112   kW) , 180   lb⋅ft (244   N⋅m)

Both a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a five-speed manual were available with all inline-four engines , including the turbocharged 2.5 L (this was a rare combination). V-6 engines were only offered with the venerable fully hydraulically operated TorqueFlite , until the computer-controlled Ultradrive 4-speed automatic became available in 1989. The Ultradrive offered much better fuel economy and responsiveness, particularly when paired with the inline-four engine.

The Plymouth Voyager was modified for 1991 with new sheet metal. The S platform was still used, though renamed the "AS platform". These were the last Voyagers that were derived from the Chrysler K platform .

Trim levels were carried over from the previous generation. 1991 Voyagers were available in base, mid-grade SE , high-end LE , and high-end LX . The LX which was available only on short-wheelbase Voyagers, was marketed as a sport-luxury minivan and came with the most standard equipment including alloy wheels, fog lamps , and a wide array of power-operated features. [14]

In later years various trim packages were offered on SE models. The "Sport Wagon" package available from 1993 until 1995 featured accent color (gray) bumpers and molding , fog lamps, and special aluminum wheels. [15] The "Rallye" package offered in 1995, took the place of the departed LX model. It was more luxury-oriented, with lower body two-tone paint — regardless of upper body color, the lower body was painted "Driftwood Beige" — silver aluminum wheels, and special badging. [15] The font first used for the Rallye's badging was adopted for all of Plymouth's badging from 1996 onward. [16]

Interiors were more differentiated in this generation than on the first with a redesigned dashboard for 1994 featuring a passenger-side front airbag. [16] and a seating package, marketed as the "Quad Command" seating package, available on SE, LE, and LX models. Quad command replaced the second-row bench with two individual bucket seats with a center aisle to the third-row bench. Interior options varied with trim levels and packages. Cloth seating was standard on all models; leather seating was a standalone extra-cost option on LE and LX models. [14]

Only badging and minor cosmetics differentiated the Voyager from its Dodge Caravan rebadged variant. [16] The Chrysler Town & Country shared the Voyager's headlamps and taillights along with its chrome waterfall grille. In Mexico, the Voyager was sold as a Chrysler and shared the chrome waterfall grille with the Town & Country.

This generation of vans brought additional innovations, including:

  • "Quad Command" bucket seating (1990)
  • Available All-wheel drive (1990)
  • Available anti-lock brakes (1990)
  • First driver's side airbag in a minivan (1991), made standard (1991), and first dual front airbags (1993)
  • Integrated child safety seats (1991), improved design with recliners (1993)
  • First minivan to meet 1998 U.S. federal safety standards (1993)

The turbocharged engine and Convert-A-Bed feature were dropped. [6]

  • 1991–1995 2.5   L K I4 , 100   hp (75   kW) , 135   lb⋅ft (183   N⋅m)
  • 1991–1995 3.0   L Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 , 142   hp (106   kW) , 173   lb⋅ft (235   N⋅m)
  • 1991–1993 3.3   L EGA V6, 150   hp (112   kW) , 180   lb⋅ft (244   N⋅m)
  • 1994–1995 3.3   L EGA V6, 162   hp (121   kW) , 194   lb⋅ft (263   N⋅m)
  • 1994–1995 3.8   L EGH V6, 162   hp (121   kW) , 213   lb⋅ft (289   N⋅m)
  • 1991: Second-generation minivans released.
  • 1992: A driver's side airbag was made standard for this year. Integrated child safety seats in the second-row bench were optional on 1992 Voyagers. The Grand Voyager was available with a lower-cost powertrain. A 142   hp (106   kW) 3.0   L V6 and a 3-speed automatic could be substituted for the standard 150   hp (112   kW) 3.3   L V6 with its 4-speed automatic. The 5-speed manual transmission could once again be paired with the base engine, which was now the 2.5   L I4 instead of the original 2.2   L I4.
  • 1993: On 7-passenger models, the optional "Quad Command" bucket seats replaced the middle bench seat. The right bucket tilted forward to ease entry and exit to the rearmost bench. The front shoulder belts became height-adjustable and rear shoulder belts had lower anchor points and the horn button was black.
  • 1994: New bumpers and body moldings, and a redesigned dashboard appeared on all 1994 Voyagers. New safety features which included a passenger-side airbag and side door-guard beams enabled the Voyager to meet all passenger car safety requirements through 1998. A cassette player became standard on all models but the base and a CD player was available on all models. Under the hood, a 162   hp (121   kW) 3.8   L V6 was a new option for top-of-the-line Grand Voyager LE models. The 3.3   L V6 was upgraded to produce 162   hp (121   kW) as well. For 1994 the "10th Anniversary Edition" was an option on Voyager SE models; it had unique two-tone paint and badges.
  • 1995: No major changes were made for 1995, except for the new Rallye option package available on SE models. Rallye models came with special silver-accent wheels and special two-toned paint on the lower body.

The 1996 Plymouth Voyager was redesigned from the ground up. The previous K-car automobile platform and architecture were replaced with modern components and utilized Chrysler's cab-forward design. The third generation redesign was built on the new Chrysler NS platform and included a driver's-side sliding door, a minivan first.

The Voyager was listed on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. [17] [18]

1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE silver.jpg

In a shift from previous minivans, the third-generation Voyager was marketed as the entry-level Chrysler minivan rather than as a direct counterpart of the Dodge Caravan. While sharing the same bodyshell, the Voyager and Caravan saw significant changes in body trim and feature content. Distinguished by a dark gray egg-crate grille (a body-color grille became an option in 1998), the Voyager used matte gray bumpers across all trim levels with matte gray side moldings. Before the calendar year 1996, the NS Voyager was produced with the Pentastar grille emblem and rear badging carried over from the previous model year, shifting to the "sailboat" Plymouth grille emblem and new badging in script font afterward.

The Voyager retained the base, SE, and LE trims from its predecessor. To reduce model overlap, the LE trim was discontinued in the United States (in favor of an expanded Town & Country range). [19] To allow the Plymouth brand to remain competitive, the Rallye option package was introduced on the SE trim; [20] along with exterior badging, the Rallye offered interior content featured in LE-trim Voyagers and Caravans. For 1998, the Rallye trim was renamed Expresso. [21]

Third generation Voyagers and Grand Voyagers were equipped nearly identically to their Dodge counterparts, save for front fascias, badging, and the wheels on LE-trim vans, which are shared with the Town & Country. However, to maintain its position as the entry-level minivan, the Voyager was never produced with automatic headlights, fog lights, power driver's seat and power mirror memory, or auto-dimming rearview mirrors.

All-wheel drive was also discontinued in some markets. The vinyl woodgrain-appearance side paneling was no longer available, as the new side sheet metal was no longer flat. [22]

Third generation Voyagers introduced a new system of rear seats to simplify installation, removal, and re-positioning — marketed as "Easy-Out Roller Seats". All Voyagers and Grand Voyagers were equipped with this feature. When installed, the second- and third-row seats (either bucket or bench seats) are latched to floor-mounted strikers. When unlatched, eight rollers lifted each seat, allowing it to be rolled fore and aft. Tracks had locator depressions for rollers, thus enabling simple installation. Ergonomic levers at the seatbacks released the floor latches single-handedly without tools and raised the seats onto the rollers in a single motion. Additionally, seatbacks were designed to fold forward. Seat roller tracks were permanently attached to the floor and seat stanchions were aligned, facilitating the longitudinal rolling of the seats. Bench seat stanchions were relocated inboard to reduce bending stress in the seat frames and allowing them to be lighter.

  • 1996–2000 3.0   L Mitsubishi 6G72 V6 150   hp (112   kW) , 176   lb⋅ft (239   N⋅m) (not available in certain U.S. states, 3.3   L V6 offered as standard equipment in those states instead)
  • 1996–2000 3.3   L EGA V6 , 158   hp (118   kW) , 203   lb⋅ft (275   N⋅m)
  • 1996–1997 3.8   L EGH V6 , 166   hp (124   kW) , 227   lb⋅ft (308   N⋅m)
  • 1998–1999 3.8   L EGH V6 , 180   hp (134   kW) , 240   lb⋅ft (325   N⋅m)
  • As running changes during this model year, the Pentastar front logo and rear badging carried over from the previous generation were replaced with the new "sailboat" logo and script font, while the front interior door panels were redesigned, losing the discrete grab handles in favor of ones integrated into the armrests. Another running change saw the elimination of the plastic intake manifold cover from the 3.8   L engine.
  • The base engine is now the 2.4 L DACT engine with 150 hp.
  • Optional rear sliding doors .
  • A CD player was a new option. Other than that, only minimal changes.
  • Grocery bag hooks were added to the rearmost bench. The Rallye package was renamed Expresso and now included new wheel covers (if equipped with steel wheels), a standard CD player, and a body-colored grille). SE models with optional low-back seats and LE models received updated cloth upholstery. As a running change during this model year, the HVAC vents on the driver's side and in the center of the dashboard were changed to a more conventional design.
  • The 3.8   L V6 was available for front-wheel drive SE models. A small cargo net between the front seats, additional standard equipment, integrated child-safety seats, and second-row buckets were added to the Voyager this year. Air conditioning was made standard on SE models. In Canada, the 3.0   L V6 was made standard equipment. 1999 also saw the addition of a one-year-only 15th anniversary "Platinum Edition", to mark Caravan's 15th year of production. This package was offered on various trim levels and included Platinum Metallic paint along with fender badges.
  • Now standard on all models was air conditioning, power windows, and power locks (the latter two standard on SE models only). A dealer-installed rear-seat video entertainment system was newly available on all models. The 2000 model year offered packages that included the "2000+" and "Millennium" packages. These only added unique fender badges on vans with popular equipment. As Chrysler withdrew the Plymouth brand, the Voyager was marketed by both Chrysler and Plymouth during this model year.

The 1996-2000 Dodge Grand Caravan (twin of the Voyager/Grand Voyager) received a "Marginal" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 's 40   mph offset test. The structural performance and restraints were graded "Acceptable", but the foot injuries were very high.

In the NHTSA crash tests, it received 4 stars for the driver and front passenger in the frontal impact. In the side-impact test, it received 5 stars for the driver, and 3 stars for the rear occupant, and resulted in a fuel leak that could cause a fire hazard.

'02-'03 Chrysler Voyager '02-'03 Chrysler Voyager.jpg

Following the retirement of the Plymouth brand after the 2000 model year, the Voyager nameplate was continued by the Chrysler division. While used by all exported Chrysler minivans since 1988, in North America, the Chrysler Voyager served as the lowest-trim Chrysler-brand minivan. Offered only in a short-wheelbase configuration, the Voyager continued with matte-black bumpers and exterior trim. Following the 2001 introduction of the RS-generation minivans, the Voyager was distinguished by a winged Chrysler emblem atop a black plastic grille (a shape adopted by the later PT Cruiser ).

For 2004, Chrysler discontinued the Voyager in the United States and Canada, replacing the model line with the Dodge Caravan and a short-wheelbase Town & Country (the Voyager remained in Mexico through 2007). In markets outside of North America, the nameplate remained in use through 2016 for all export versions (as both a Chrysler and a Lancia).

After skipping the 2008-2020 fifth generation, the Voyager nameplate returned to use in North America for 2020 production, slotted below the Chrysler Pacifica and effectively replacing the Dodge Grand Caravan .

97 plymouth Voyager Rallye-no start

  • Add to quote

Hi all, I am new to the dodge forums and am having a problem with my van. The wife was driving the van home from work a while ago when it stalled while slowing to make a left hand turn. she was able to get it started and when she step on the gas it lurched foward and stalled again this time would not re-start. When I got to the van I checked the fuel pump and couldnt hear it run at key on. I proceeded to check fuel pressure and nothing at the fuel rail, so I then checked fuses and relays and all were fine. So I bought a new fuel pump and installed and now can hear it run at key on, and there is sufficent fuel pressure at the injectors and still no start. So after that I checked for spark and got nothing. so just on a whim I replace the coil pack to no avail, at this point I called up a buddy with a Snap-On scan tool and got the following codes, P1389- no asd relay output voltage at pcm P1388- asd relay control circuit-open/short P0353- ignition coil #3 Primary circuit. so asd relay I asked my self so I find relay switch it around and nothing different happens. I got on here and started searching around and noticed alot of people describing some of the same symtems and kind of referred to the crank position sensor and cam position sensor, so I replace both of those as well to no avail. at this point I have no further clue as to what to look at except possible pcm issues, which I can get a new one for fairly cheap but I have already dumped some money into this trying to fix this thing and dont want to buy a computer I cant return if its not the issue. so any suggestion please would be greatly apprectiated

well one month later got my van running with a junkyard PCM, ran great for about 2 days. Now I have a completely new problem. While driving the van today at 55mph the van just stalls out, tried cranking the motor, turned over just fine but would not fire, about 5 min. later while holding the gas pedal to the floor while I cranked it I got it to start but it it just stuttered and shook and the rpms would not go above 1000 rpms, popping and missing the whole time, also had a nice sulfer smell while it was running let off the gas and it just goes dead. So I leave the van to get ahold of a buddy with a tow truck, left the van on the side of the road for about 5 hours, got the van home tried to start it, starts fine but seems to missing on 1 or 2 cyl. It revs up fine but just has a continuing miss the whole time. The only other thing that is out of the ordinary is the Service Engine Soon light is lit and occasionally flashes, tried to reset the PCM thinking I could clear the SES light but did nothing different. Now I believe I may have a clogged fuel filter, what are your thoughts.

plymouth voyager rallye

On my 96 ram, the flashing CEL was the prelude to total computer failure. Replaced the computer and the cel stayed off and the truck ran fine.

When you got the PCM from the junkyard, did it match exactly? It must be the exact match.year, model, engine size,ac,theft control and all. The numbers on your PCM must match the numbers on the replacement PCM. You can check your own codes with the ignition switch method. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Then turn it to OFF-ON-OFF-ON as fast as possible. Your check engine or service engine soon light will begin blinking codes. All codes are in two digit format and will blink that way. As an example-one blink..pause...two blinks is a code 12. Five blinks...pause five blinks is a code 55. Those two codes most people will get. Code 12 is battery recently disconnected and 55 is end of message....telling you diagnosis is done. Any other codes may be the source of your problem. Try putting your old coil back in,it is possible to get a bad coil from the manufacturer. If this gets rid of the miss, return the new one as defective. There is also the possibility you got a PCM from the junkyard that was ready to go itself.

Thank you for the info on how to check the codes through CEL I knew you could do that on other vehicles I just didnt know how on these. And yes part numbers on the computers where identicle except the date and time stamp and as I stated the van ran absolutly perfect for 2 days after install. Now when i read the codes through the light I got codes 12, 43, 55 so I will do what you recommended and swap out coil packs and get back to you on the results. after I swap coils do I have to reset the PCM?

Disconnecting the battery is always the safest way to work on anything electrical. Doing so resets your PCM. You'll also be able to tell if the same exact code comes back or is now not present.

swapped coil pack still have same misfire code and definate miss, I am starting to think that I did get a bad PCM from the junkyard, I guess I will have to do some more junkyard searching or just spring for a new one. thanks for all the help and advice.

There is always the possibility of a corroded, or broken, connection between the coil pack and the PCM. Might want to make sure before purchasing one. You might also want to go over any ground straps and verify they have good connection.Disconnect the four prong plug from the coil and do this test. By doing the test in the picture you should know which direction to go. If the test light functions correctly in all the cylinder's you have two bad coils, bad spark plugs, bad plug end or bad spark plug wires. If it doesn't function correctly in any of the tests it can be either the PCM or bad connections.

I tested the connector on the coil with a test light and one of the leads is giving power full time the other three had no reaction what so ever, not a flash not a nothing, now Im completely fooled as to why it runs if im not getting any signal to the coil.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

plymouth voyager rallye

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
