Star Cruises Set to Restart Operations in Malaysia

Genting Cruise Lines, together with Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) announced that the Malaysian government has granted approval for Star Cruises to restart operations in Malaysia on Dec. 22 2021 with Star Pisces offering cruises from Penang.

The Star Pisces will have five departures every week, offering a series of roundtrip itineraries from Penang, including a two-night ‘Langkawi Escape’ and a one-night ‘Straits of Malacca’ cruise itinerary.

Genting Cruise Lines said it also plans to launch more ships under the Star Cruises fleet, beginning with Star Pisces in Penang, Malaysia.

Star Pisces will initially operate at a reduced passenger capacity of 50 percent with strict enhanced safety and preventive measures that are in accordance with the local requirements and international standards, according to the news release.

All guests and crew must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. In addition, all embarking guests are required to present a negative test result after completing the mandatory pre-boarding Antigen Rapid Test (ART), which will be conducted at the cruise terminal on the day of the departure.

“As part of Genting Cruise Lines, Star Cruises is excited to pioneer safe cruises in Malaysia and to work hand-in-hand with the ministries under the Malaysian government, together with PPC and PPSB to support the country’s National Recovery Plan (NRP), including Langkawi’s international tourism travel bubble pilot program,” said said Kent Zhu, President of Genting Cruise Lines.

“We hope to call on to more Malaysian destinations and to expand our itineraries with the inclusion of regional destinations like Phuket in the near future to spur the cruise tourism industry. We are also actively pursuing with the various port authorities to create a ‘Harmonize Cruising Standards’ for the region in the hope of gradually re-opening international cruising in a controlled and safe manner, which will also bring inbound tourists to Malaysia, especially from our ship in Singapore,” Zhu said.

“With the approval from the National Security Council (NCS) to restart domestic cruise operations, the cruise industry was given a new lease of life to operate once again. PPC, Genting Cruise Lines, PPSB and the respective Government agencies worked very closely to ensure domestic cruises could resume as soon as possible. PPC believes the cruise packages offered by Star Cruises under Genting Cruise Lines will provide Malaysians with a long-awaited holiday alternative, as traveling abroad is presently restricted. We believe the restart of the domestic cruise operations in a safe manner will further boost the tourism sector, as well as the other supporting sectors. It is PPC’s hope that the domestic cruise operations will run smoothly in accordance with the prevailing SOPs and that international cruises will be allowed to operate in the near future,” said Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Chairman of PPC.

Star Pisces bookings will be open in mid-December and available to all Malaysian citizens, foreigners with valid Malaysian long-term visit passes, as well as international tourists that had completed and passed the quarantine and home surveillance order by the Malaysian authorities. 

“Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) is delighted to announce that the cruise industry in Malaysia will be staging a comeback on 22 December 2021. This is truly a joyful occasion as we are looking forward to jump-start the cruise services through the government’s Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan. PPSB will work closely with Star Cruises under Genting Cruise Lines to ensure safe and comfortable cruise trips for everyone. Now more than ever, tourists should no longer be concerned as the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) has been thoroughly inspected for the passengers’ safety through strict SOP and guidelines to curb COVID-19. By working with Genting Cruise Lines, we intend to revitalise the domestic tourism sector and help it reach new heights in the coming years,” added Dato’ Sasedharan Vasudevan, CEO, Penang Port Sdn Bhd.

“Just like many parts of the world that are experiencing pandemic fatigue, residents in Malaysia also deserve a well-earned break. As such, we look forward to welcoming travellers from Malaysia on Star Pisces and to provide them with a safe and ultimately a memorable ‘Super Seacation’ cruise holiday,” Zhu said. .

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 4): Genting Cruise Lines, together with Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), announced that the government has granted approval for Star Cruises to restart operations in Malaysia on Dec 22, with Star Pisces offering safe cruises from Penang.

As the first international cruise line to homeport and resume commercial operations in Malaysia, Genting Cruise Lines said in a statement that Star Pisces will have five departures every week, offering a series of roundtrip itineraries from Penang, including a two-night ‘Langkawi Escape’. This is in addition to its one-night ‘Straits of Malacca’ cruise itinerary as another seasonal option for Malaysians to celebrate a joyful Christmas and New Year during the school holidays, it said.

A division under Hong Kong-listed Genting Hong Kong Ltd, Genting Cruise Lines said it is also the first international cruise company in the world to successfully restart operations with Dream Cruises, starting in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong since July last year.

It plans to launch more ships under the Star Cruises fleet, beginning with Star Pisces in Penang, following its valuable experience and expertise in implementing safe cruises.

“As part of Genting Cruise Lines, Star Cruises is excited to pioneer safe cruises in Malaysia and to work hand-in-hand with the ministries under the Malaysian government, together with PPC and PPSB to support the country’s National Recovery Plan (NRP), including Langkawi’s international tourism travel bubble pilot program.

Review of superstar gemini.

The 1992-built/2022- scrapped SuperStar Gemini cruise ship is owned by GHK (Genting Hong Kong, part of Genting Group Malaysia) and managed by GHK's subsidiary Genting Cruise Lines via the Star Cruises brand. Fleetmates were Star Pisces , SuperStar Aquarius (sistership), SuperStar Libra . The liner's building cost was USD 240 million. The drydock refurbishment in 2013 cost USD 50 million.

The vessel (IMO number 9008419) was last Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308272000) and registered in Nassau .

In late-April 2022, was announced that the docked in Malaysia ships Star Pisces and SuperStar Gemini (both in George Town Penang ) and SuperStar Aquarius (in Port Klang ) are listed for scrapping and soon to be beached at Alang India . According to online media sources, the liners' last crew signed off on May 17th, as new/skeleton crew were hired to take them to the scrapyard for dismantling and recycling.

In June, the vessel was renamed GEM and reflagged to St Kitts & Nevis (MMSI 341492000/registered in Basseterre ). On June 5th, the ship left Penang en route to Colombo Sri Lanka , arriving and anchoring off the coast on June 17th. On July 14th, MV GEM arrived and docked at HIP-Hambantota International Port (Sri Lanka) for a month-long layup. The sistership MV ARIUS (SuperStar Aquarius) arrived there on July 11th.

SuperStar Gemini's AIS transmitted for the last time on November 22, 2022 (at 20:34 UTC) showing the vessel en route to Alang.

History - construction and ownership

Star Cruises is part of Genting Cruise Lines (subsidiary of GHK-Genting Hong Kong Corporation) - the world's 5th-largest cruise shipowner, after Carnival Corporation , RCG-Royal Caribbean Group , MSC and NCLH-Norwegian . The company (listed on Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange) dominates the Asia-Pacific cruising market. Star Cruises was established as a subsidiary and travel brand of Genting Group of Malaysia (incorporated in Bermuda in 1993), with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China .

The fleet's first ships were two cruiseferries bought from Rederi AB Slite (1947-founded/1993-bankrupt, see VIKING LINE ). In the following years, Star Cruises purchased several other second-hand ships, then followed two newbuilds - SuperStar Leo/Norwegian Spirit (1998) and the sistership SuperStar Virgo (1999).

The 1750-passenger ship SuperStar Gemini was built in 1992 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique (shipyard in Saint-Nazaire France ). The first name of the vessel was ms Dreamwar and it was constructed with the idea to sail for Norwegian Cruise Line . In 1998 the cruise ship was upgraded (lengthened), at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany and her name was changed to Norwegian Dream. The ship was added to the fleet of Star Cruises at the end of 2012 as SuperStar Gemini. In the period between 1995 and 2008 SuperStar Gemini was sailing under the name "MS Gemini".

During the lengthening process in March-May 1998, the vessel was cut in half and a new 40-m / 130-ft long midsection was added. The maximum passenger capacity was increased significantly. SuperStar Gemini naming ceremony was held on 5 December 1992 at Port Everglades , the place where the vessel started her first cruise to Bermuda the next day.

Star Cruises ships are recognized by their funnel design. Star Pisces was the first with such design. Later the company based all of its ships on the Star Pisces' funnel design.

Decks and Cabins

SuperStar Gemini provides a total of 765 staterooms in 14 categories. The largest accommodations are the Junior Suites (370 ft2 / 34 m2). All suites are equipped with HDTV, DVD player, mini-fridge, separate lounge area.

The boat has 13 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

SuperStar Gemini is operated as a "freestyle" cruise ship, which means passengers have the choice to dine when, where and with whom they choose. All food presentation is a treat for the eye. All meals are included during the voyage at the main dining restaurants.

Itineraries

SuperStar Gemini itinerary program was based on Asian voyages.

In 2017-2018, the ship was home-ported in Laem Chabang-Bangkok (Thailand) . The ship's new deployment was for the period December 17, 2017, through April 27, 2018. From Thailand, SuperStar Gemini operated 3-night roundtrips to Sihanoukville Cambodia and Koh Samui Island (departures every Sunday), 2-night roundtrips to Sihanoukville (departures every Wednesday) and 2-night roundtrips to Koh Kong Island (departures every Friday).

For 2018-2019 winter season (November 5, 2018, through April 28, 2019), the liner was homeported in Malaysia (ports Langkawi , Port Klang , Penang ) and Thailand ( Phuket ). The 3-night itineraries were mixed with 4-night (departing February 6) and 2-night (departing February 10) special voyages visiting Langkawi, Port Klang, Penang, Phuket, Krabi , Singapore .

The vessel (Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard/hull number 103348) was launched in 1992 as "MS Dreamward" for Kloster Cruises (now NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line ). The first drydock was for lengthening (March thru May 1998) conducted in Bremerhaven Germany (at Lloyd Werft's yard). The stretched by 40 m/130 ft ship was then renamed "Norwegian Dream". As SuperStar Gemini, the ship was transferred to Star Cruises in 2012. The only sistership is SuperStar Aquarius/Norwegian Wind/MS Windward (1993-built/2022-scrapped).

The ship is powered by MAN marine diesel engines (model 8L4054) with total power output 18,64 MW.

Being part of the Asia-Pacific leading cruise line, Star Cruises Gemini ship offers amazing journeys across the high seas. In 2013, the vessel underwent a major USD 50-million refurbishment. Drydock 2013 was the time when SuperStar Gemini was upgraded with a new navigational system, lots of new onboard features, new hull design.

In the period February 7-16 (Chinese New Year), Star Cruises designated SuperStar Gemini as "hotel ship". During this time, the vessel was permanently docked in homeport Sanya China (at Phoenix Island International Port). This way, Star Cruises introduced (for the first-ever) in Asia the "Floating Hotel" cruise vacation concept, providing a unique holiday vacation experience. The "cruise deals" were inclusive of stateroom, onboard dining and entertainment, as well as all onboard holiday-themed events (Valentine's Day dinner, Lunar New Year family dinner, live magic show performances, kids programs). All main onboard venues (including the 11 restaurants and the Theater Lounge) remained open during the nights. There was also an extensive night-life program. "Hotel ship" tickets prices per night / per person started from USD 78 (Inside Cabin fare based on double occupancy).

PETALING JAYA: Genting Malaysia Bhd says neither the company nor its deputy chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay participated in talks with the government about opening a casino in Forest City, Johor.

The company denied claims made in a Bloomberg report on Thursday that Lim was involved in discussions with the government last week on operating the casino.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) had also denied the report, which claimed discussions were held to discuss the opening of the casino at Forest City.

“Genting Malaysia Bhd wishes to state that neither the company nor Tan Sri Lim was involved in any such discussions or meetings and the claims made are untrue,” Genting Malaysia said in a statement.

It also urged all parties to immediately cease publication and dissemination of the misinformation, remove the claims and to provide necessary clarification to the public to prevent further confusion.

“Genting Malaysia Bhd shall not hesitate to take further action deemed necessary to protect its interests and its stakeholders,” it said.

Anwar had also earlier affirmed that there were no plans to issue the country’s second casino licence to Forest City.“Those who raised the issue of a casino licence lied. It is not true. That’s a lie,” said Anwar.

BCorp had said the article included “inaccurate information” that misrepresented its supposed involvement in discussions with the Prime Minister regarding the Forest City project.

The company’s statement said BCorp founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan had not participated in any such discussions and refute the inaccurate claims presented in the article.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi had also refuted the report that there will be a casino opening in the state.“The rumour is seen as an act of sabotage with an ill intention to taint the name of Forest City and Johor,” Onn Hafiz said in a statement.
