Tanzania Safari - Compare 4,609 Tours

Tanzania is one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The wildlife viewing is out of this world and big cats are especially easy to see. All members of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) can be found in various Tanzanian parks and reserves, and all five are present in the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Almost 40% of the country is protected and set aside for conservation, which means that it’s easy to go on a Tanzania safari for 2 full weeks and drive from park to park while rarely leaving the bush.

8 Questions About Tanzania Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

tanzania safari holidays from uk

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

“A Tanzania safari can be booked throughout the year, but the best time depends on your interests. If seeing the wildebeest migration is the main focus of your visit, you will have to plan carefully. June to October is the best period to see the migration in the Serengeti, but you’ll have to stay in different areas of the park at different stages of the migration, and as this all depends on the rain, this isn’t completely dependable. If you want to get away from the crowds, you should book your accommodation in the Serengeti away from the wildebeest migration. The wettest months are March to May, and any safari might be compromised at this time.”

Why visit Tanzania, what are the major attractions?

“Tanzania is the quintessential safari destination, offering both quality and quantity. The wildlife viewing is superb and there is just so much choice in terms of places to visit and things to do. In fact, it would be hard to experience all of the highlights even in three Tanzania holidays, let alone one. There are three distinct safari circuits: the most popular Northern safari circuit includes famous places such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The lesser-known Southern circuit centers on Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park. The off-the-beaten-track Western circuit includes Katavi National Park and the chimpanzee reserves on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Avid mountain climbers might be surprised to learn the highest peak in Africa is in Tanzania. Mt Kilimanjaro lies between Kenya and Tanzania but is climbed from the Tanzanian side.”

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

“Tanzania tours are not geared toward big groups. The best way to see the parks is on a bespoke safari for two or four people who book together as a family or group of friends, though that obviously comes at a price. You should budget a starting price of US$500 per person per day, but it is difficult to put a specific figure on a trip, as a lot of variables need to be taken into account. For example, camping safaris are generally cheaper than lodge safaris. Conversely, the Serengeti and some other parks in the Northern circuit have big hotels that are much cheaper than the small, exclusive lodges and tented camps – although the latter are often more basic. The season makes a big difference too. Discounted rates apply if you are willing to travel in the rainy season, while you’ll pay a premium to visit during the height of the wildebeest migration.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Tanzania?

“The wildlife viewing in Tanzania is superb. A Tanzania safari in the Northern circuit takes in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Any of these parks offer fantastic game viewing, although some of it is seasonal. Doing the whole circuit enhances the experience as you’ll be going through a variety of habitats and environments. Due to the sizes of the parks, it is possible to get away from the crowds, but as the Northern circuit is the most popular circuit, you will be surrounded by other tourists at times. If you really want to get away from all that, you can visit the Southern circuit, where the game viewing is slightly more challenging but very good all the same. This circuit is perhaps more suited to repeat Africa visitors who are less driven to tick off the Big Five.”

How safe is Tanzania for tourists?

“Tanzania has a slick and experienced tourist industry, and a Tanzanian safari overall is very safe. That said, there is a lot of petty crime in big cities such as Dar es Salaam, so walking around alone isn’t recommended. Tourists sometimes get targeted in Arusha and other urban tourist hot spots, but most of the time the hassle is benign and is really just touts wanting to sell things (anything from safaris to beaded necklaces). Being firm and standing your ground is usually all it takes to diffuse any situation. In any case, most people on Tanzanian tours don’t spend very much (or any) time in urban centers, so none of this is likely to be a concern.”

How do I select a reliable Tanzanian tour operator?

“Tanzania is a popular African safari destination and many large reputable operators working in Africa sell Tanzanian holidays. Most operators offer pretty much the same packages and the differences will mostly lie in the quality of the guides and vehicles. If you have a special interest, you might want to do some research and look for operators catering to that; for example, some packages are more geared toward walking safaris or fly camping (where the whole camp gets set up for you at a special private campsite). You can compare Tanzania safari prices and packages on SafariBookings.com. Always read the reviews as they will give you a good indication of reliability and the quality of the guides.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“The safari industry in Tanzania is well established and there is a good variety of accommodation on offer. Going with an outfitter offering comfortable camping safaris is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it also adds to the sense of adventure. If real camping isn’t your thing, but you like the romance of tented accommodation, there are tented camps (with actual beds and flushing toilets inside) offering different levels of luxury. For those visitors that prefer to spend their evenings in less of a bush environment, there are hotels that provide a total disconnect from the countryside, which also means less chance of creepy-crawlies in your room. The current trend, however, is toward exclusive designer lodges blending into the environment and offering an unparalleled level of luxury and service. The sky is the limit!”

What can I expect from a safari in Tanzania?

“When on a Tanzania tour, you can expect an experience of a lifetime – or maybe the first of many more to come. Once the safari bug has bitten, people tend to return over and over again to experience the African bush. It is hard to stay away for too long. Tanzania is the perfect destination for first-time safaris as the wildlife viewing and African landscapes in the Northern circuit are all you could hope for, and more. Tanzania is also the perfect destination for repeat visitors, as your first visit won’t even scratch the surface of the touring options. Seasoned African safari enthusiasts will enjoy some of the more remote parks, with different animals such as African wild dogs in the Southern circuit and chimpanzees in the west.”

Tailor-made Tanzania Holidays

Welcome to Tanzania, home of sun-scorched safaris, snow-covered peaks and magical spice islands. In this diverse African icon, you could be bouncing across wildlife-spotted savannahs one day and the next, picnicking in a volcanic crater or hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. While many come to witness million-strong wildebeest herds migrating across the Serengeti, Tanzania offers supreme wildlife encounters all year-round. You don’t have to try hard here to spot the Big Five, a cacophony of colourful birdlife or even rare species like African hunting dogs. Explore it all from luxury safari camps where you can take dawn hot air balloon rides, 4×4 game drives and walking safaris with Maasai naturalists.

Just as diverse as its landscapes and wildlife are the welcoming people you’ll meet in Tanzania, who hail from over 120 different ethnic groups. It could be Maasai Chief Lobulo, who’ll proudly show you around his village or Tanzania’s first female guide Mary, who leads tuk tuk tours of her hometown Mto wa Mbu. Then there’s the smiling food vendors frying up Zanzibar pizzas in spice-scented Stone Town while women lay cloves out to dry on the roadside. Perhaps most memorable though are the ancient Datoga and Hadzabe bushpeople who live on the arid shores of Lake Eyasi and continue to hunt with bows and arrows and forage off the land, as they have done for millenia.

Explore Tanzania with help from our Africa team, who can put together the perfect itinerary packed with dream safaris, luxurious lodges and heart-shaping cultural experiences or suggest a small group safari that ticks all your boxes.

Our Tanzania Travel Guide is a good place to start planning with essential travel information, when to travel and how best to get around. Or get familiar with Tanzania’s diverse landscapes with our interactive map  and regional guides.

Tipping : Is expected when you’re on safari or a guided trek in Tanzania. Most tour operators will give you clear guidelines on how to tip but generally, you’ll pay around $10 per group per day for your driver and guide, plus around $5-10 for the rest of your team. Otherwise, hotels will usually have a tip box and when it comes to taxis and restaurants, feel free to simply round up the bill.

Etiquette:   Tanzania is a conservative country, so dress modestly unless you’re staying in a beach resort, covering your shoulders and knees. This is particularly important in coastal areas and on Zanzibar, where the population is predominately Muslim. Public displays of affection are also frowned upon and you should ask permission before photographing locals. You’ll normally be greeted warmly with a handshake, although be sure to offer your right hand as the left is seen as reserved for unclean tasks – the same goes for eating.

Religions : Roughly a third of the population in Tanzania identifies as Christian, another third Muslim and the rest practise a mixture of animist and folk religions. While Christianity was imported by colonial missionaries in the 16 th century, Islam dates back even further to medieval times when Arabic traders established trading stations along the coast and in Zanzibar. You’ll probably notice families dressed in their finest for Friday Muslim prayers and church on Sunday.

Use of plastic: The law bans the use, manufacture, and importation of all single-use plastic bags. Travellers arriving in Tanzania with duty-free plastic bags will be required to leave them at the airport. The government however confirms that reusable zip lock bags are permitted. Plastic bottled water may be provided in vehicles although to stay hydrated on the go, we recommend travelling with a personal, reusable bottle which you can refill at airports, hotels and lodges.

Visas: You can look up the latest advice on https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania . Please be aware that this information can change at short notice.

Vaccinations: Health risks vary depending on the destination so it’s essential to check the specific vaccination and hygiene requirements for Tanzania on the NHS Fit for Travel website .

You’ll experience supreme wildlife spotting all year-round in Tanzania. For guaranteed viewings though, the dry season between June and October draws animals to watering holes and rivers for prime viewing. The Serengeti sees different stages of the famous Great Migration throughout the year but is most visible between June and July when animals make the daring crossing over the Mara River. Visit in January and February and you’ll see thousands of baby wildebeest in the Serengeti.

The green, wetter season between November and May brings lusher landscape and less-crowded safaris but it’s best to avoid the heaviest rain in April and May, which can disrupt roads. Planning to climb Kilimanjaro? Expect year-round icy temperatures. The most popular months for climbing are September and October when there’s less chance of rain and cloud. Along the coast and on the Zanzibar archipelago, migratory whale sharks appear between November and March, while green turtles hatch between April and September.

Tanzania is a huge country that can be overwhelming to navigate. Buses are cheap but the poorly maintained roads make journeys long and bumpy. In towns and cities, you’ll spot dallas dallas buses used by locals, which leave when full and tend to be crowded. Domestic flights are the most convenient way to get around and airlines such as Air Tanzania, Tropical Air and Safari Airlink fly from Dar es Salaam, the country’s key international hub. If you’re staying at high-end safari lodges and tented camps, many will have their own aircraft and airstrips.

Safaris are conducted in shared or private 4x4s, which come with a driver-guide and often a spotter from the Kuria or Maasai community. Many of Tanzania’s northern circuit attractions like the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro are connected by buses or private car journeys, while the more remote southern areas like Nyerere and Ruaha require air links. Visiting Zanzibar? Fly down or take the two-hour AZAM Marine Ferry that leaves a couple of times a week. Scenic trips in Arabian dhow sail boats are common on the coast and islands.

Local Tanzanian cuisine revolves around ugali, a maize porridge found throughout Africa. It’ll be served with grilled nyama choma (roast meat) or hearty stews. Duckling Dar es Salaam is considered a delicacy, flavoured with peppers, onions and tomatoes. You’ll also see chipsi mayai on most menus which is the Swahili version of egg and chips and usually presented as an omelette on top of fries. To finish off a meal, there’s plenty of tropical fruit or the donut-like treat vitumbua. Wash everything down with milky chai, Rooibos or, if you’re brave enough, fiery Konyagi gin.

There’s a strong Asian culinary influence along Tanzania’s coast and in Zanzibar, where dishes are infused with spices like cardamom, cinnamon and clove. Creamy coconut-based curries rule alongside grilled seafood and the Zanzibar pizza, a pocket of fried dough filled with onion, vegetables and meat or even Nutella dessert options. Inland, safari lodges and tented camps serve up lavish international spreads complete with bush breakfasts, game drive picnics and evening sundowners.

Tanzania is a mecca for crafts such as beaded jewellery hand-made by the Maasai and Samburu people. The skilled Makonde tribe create incredible carvings from highly-polished wood, which you can find in local markets. Other common souvenirs include Serengeti landscapes and African drums. Trawl for treasures at Dar es Salaams Mwenge Carvers’ Market and Arusha Central Market or haggle in markets throughout Tanzania. It’s customary to bargain for goods, start at half the quoted price and work up from there.

One of the country’s most unique souveniers is its beautiful Tanzanite, found in the northern hills near Kilimanjaro. This precious, blue-toned stone is the perfect centrepiece for one-off jewelry pieces. If you’re looking for fabrics, you’ll find cotton kikoys worn as skirts or trousers and coloured with natural dyes, as well as bright batik fabrics. Visiting Zanzibar? You’ll probably want to pick up some of its famous spices. The markets here are bursting with bags of fragrant cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg, to name just a few.

Tanzania’s blend of Christian, Muslim and indigenous religions results in a calendar full of vibrant festivals. These include Easter, Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, which may disrupt travel. Unification Day is one of the most important events, marking the April 26 th 1964 reunification of mainland Kenya, formerly Tanganyika, and the Zanzibar islands. This is celebrated across the country with parades and performances. Around the time of the Great Migration in July, the Serengeti Cultural Festival features traditional art and culture displays.

Zanzibar hosts its own range of colourful events too, from Stone Town’s Swahili festival with its traditional music and processions to the Mwaka Kogwa festival. Held over four days in July/August, this holiday is famed for its banana stalk fight, where locals battle to resolve the past year’s conflicts by hitting each other with the stalks. This is followed by musical performances, elaborate banquets and a huge bonfire.

Why go on safari in Tanzania?

If you dream of going on an African safari , Tanzania is a popular choice.

Tanzania is one of the world’s top safari destinations, and the country offers a whole host of unique experiences. You get right up close to impressive wildlife and varied and scenic nature with mountains, nature reserves and lakes. A tour to Tanzania is a safe choice for fantastic experiences all year round – even in the rainy season.

Our safari holidays in Tanzania

We offer a wide selection of safari holidays in Tanzania – with and without a beach holiday.

Below you can read about some of the highlights that await you in this East African country. You can explore all the experiences on the different tours.

Serengeti National Park

Many of our tours take you on safari holiday in Serengeti , the most famous national park in Tanzania, and the epitome of African safari.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the national park is, among other things, known for the annual migration of millions of zebras and wildebeests. Look forward to experiencing endless plains and a sky that goes on forever.

The Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater , located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is an extinct volcano and the largest intact caldera in the world.

Like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the reasons being that several endangered animal species live here, including the black rhinoceros. Fun fact: The only classic safari animal you won’t see in the crater is the giraffe, as the crater ridge is too steep for it to walk down with its long legs.

Beach holiday in Zanzibar

A package holiday combining Tanzania and Zanzibar is a popular choice among many of our guests.

Zanzibar is located just under 50 km off the coast of Tanzania and consists of mile after mile of white sandy beaches that stretch along the Indian Ocean. On Zanzibar, you’ll experience total relaxation surrounded by coconut palms and azure blue water.

If you don’t want to lie on the beach all day, you can go sightseeing in the capital, Zanzibar, where you can, for example, visit Stone Town, Zanzibar’s old town. Zanzibar can also be combined with a safari in Kenya.

Other highlights on a safari in Tanzania

A safari in Tanzania offers experiences aplenty in the country’s exciting national parks.

  • Head to southern Tanzania and discover Nyerere, Tanzania’s largest national park , where authentic experiences await that you won’t have to share with many other people.
  • Experience large herds of elephants in Tarangire National Park , which also offers scenic and varied landscapes and incredible bird life.
  • In Tanzania’s smallest national park, Lake Manyara , which is located at the foot of the western slopes of the Great Rift Valley, you can experience the beautiful lake of the same name, which is known, among other things, for its tree-climbing lions.
  • If you want to up the adventure on your tour, you can opt for a balloon safari , where you soar over the plains of the Serengeti.
  • The nights in Tanzania are often spent in wild camps – camps located in the middle of the wilderness – and this is your chance to get right up close to the African nature.

Combine your Tanzania safari with…

We offer several different combination options for selected Tanzania safari holidays. See your options under each tour.

Experiences in Stone Town

If you love Marrakesh, you’ll love Stone Town – Zanzibar’s old town – too. With its winding streets and beautiful doors, you can’t fail to fall in love with the place. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is in many ways a sensory experience with its smells, sounds, colours, history and culture.

Masai adventure at Osiligilai Maasai Lodge

Get right up close to the Masai culture and gain an insight into the customs and traditions of the Masai people at Osiligilai Maasai Lodge. The lodge enjoys a scenic location in a grassland area with open expanses and a view of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. A stay here is pure self-indulgence.

Gorilla tracking in Uganda

Round off your tour and combine your Tanzania safari with a trip to Uganda, where you’ll head off in search of the fascinating mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where almost half of the world’s free-living mountain gorillas live.

Book safari packages to Tanzania including flights

All our safari holidays in Tanzania are package tours.

This means that when you book a safari tour, the price includes flights (return flights as well as domestic flights), transfers at the destination, accommodation, planned safaris and other excursions.

Visit our practical information about Tanzania page for more information on what you need to take care of yourself (things such visas, vaccinations, etc.).

Answers to frequently asked questions about safaris in Tanzania

Where should i go on safari in tanzania.

Tanzania offers many exciting safari parks, and the one you should choose depends entirely on what you want to experience.

Most people do what’s known as the “northern circuit” – i.e. in northern Tanzania, where the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire are to be found. You could also head to southern Tanzania, where, among other places, you’ll find Nyerere National Park – formerly Selous Game Reserve.

If you dream of experiencing the Great Migration on your tour in Tanzania, you should go on safari in the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater. If you’d like to see elephants, Tarangire National Park is the obvious choice, and if it’s birds that interest you, Lake Manyara offers a wide selection of bird species.

We offer safaris in both the north and south, and our tours typically combine several different national parks, giving you a broad insight into Tanzania’s nature and wildlife.

How much does it cost to go on safari?

The price of a safari in Tanzania varies depending on the length of the tour, the itinerary and the departure date.

All our safari tours include flights, transfers, safaris, national park fees and more.

Tours cost more during peak seasons, e.g. during the summer holidays and over Christmas and the New Year, but less off-peak. It is typically cheapest to go on safari in Tanzania in April and May. You can see our minimum prices on each individual safari tour.

Request a quote to obtain the final price based on your departure date, airport, and any adjustments/upgrades.

When is the best time for a Tanzania safari?

You can go on safari in Tanzania all year round, and all months offer fantastic experiences.

Many of our guests prefer to travel during the dry seasons (January–February and June–October), when the weather is generally hotter and drier.

When you go on safari in the dry season, the animals can be easier to spot because they gather around the waterholes when they start to run out of water – and this happens especially at the end of the dry season.

However, you can travel in the rainy season and come home without having experienced any rain. In the rainy season, the rain usually falls as torrential showers, which only last a few hours before clearing up again.

What clothes should I wear when going on safari?

There are no rules about what clothes you should wear when you go on safari. However, we recommend that you wear light/neutral clothes. Avoid stark, bright colours, white, dark blue and black – dark blue and black in particular attract tsetse flies.

Read more about what to wear and get our packing list for safari in Tanzania here .

Is it safe to go on a safari holiday in Tanzania?

Yes, it’s safe to go on a safari holiday in Tanzania.

The animals are used to there being cars around, and they don’t view them as a threat. Our guides also have a deep understanding of animal behaviour and the park’s rules. At the accommodation or wild camps that do not have a fence, you’ll be accompanied by a Masai person after dark.

How long do you need for a safari holiday?

We recommend that you have 3–4 days of safari when you’ve travelled so far. Our shortest safari holiday in Tanzania lasts 7 days (including outbound and return journey) and includes 4 days of safari, in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, among other places.

The length of your tour depends on how much you want to experience and whether the tour rounds off with a beach holiday.

What type of cars are used on game drives in Tanzania?

On the safari part of the tour, you’ll drive in a 4WD Landcruiser seating up to seven people. The roof can be opened in all cars.

It is also possible to have your own private car (with driver) for an additional fee. Please contact us if you’re interested in receiving more information on this.

Where do you spend the night when you’re on safari in Tanzania?

When you’re on safari in Tanzania, you typically spend the night in lodges, wild camps or other camps.

Lodges refer to cabins of varying sizes and often have pools, restaurants and other nice facilities.

Wildcamps and other camps are typically located at the border of or in the national parks themselves, and you spend the night in permanent tents, which are full height and have solid floors. The tents also have a shower and a toilet.

Can children come on safari?

It’s an amazing experience to take your children on safari in Tanzania.

When you go on safari with children, it’s good to be aware of the length of the tour, driving distances and your children’s age and travel experience. All our safari tours in Tanzania can in theory be done with children. If you’re travelling with young children, however, we recommend that you choose our family safari in Tanzania, where the focus is on shorter driving distances and child-friendly lodges.

Tanzania safari highlights

A giraffe standing in the grassy plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania

Find the Big Five

Jump into a specially designed safari vehicle and journey deep into the vast, grassy plains of the Serengeti to search for the Big Five (the lion, the leopard, the bush elephant, the Cape buffalo and the rhino). The animals are active at different times of the day, which is why we head out on four game drives – two in the early morning and two in the late afternoon – for the best chance of spotting Africa's most iconic wildlife.

A dazzle of zebras in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Explore Ngorongoro Crater

At 20 kilometres wide and 600 metres deep, the scenes of Ngorongoro Crater's craggy volcanic peaks and lush grasslands are almost as impressive as the 30,000 animals that call it home. Traverse the crater floor in an open-roof 4WD to track down large game and smaller critters. If you're lucky, you might see lions, leopards, elephants and hippos. And if you're really lucky, maybe even an endangered black rhino.

A local shepherd from the Masai community in Tanzania

Meet local communities

You might come for the Big Five, but you'll stay for the culture and hospitality. Home to over 120 tribes, the little town of Mto wa Mbu is home to diverse cultures, languages and customs. Visit a local community to learn about traditional ways of life, sample banana beer, meet some local craftspeople and share a homecooked meal with a family in their home. This is the Tanzania most travellers don't see.

Two cyclists posing for a photo in the Serengeti, Tanzania

Cycle alongside antelope

Swap four wheels for two on an epic cycling-come-safari adventure through some of Tanzania's lesser-known landscapes. From cycling in the shadow of Mount Meru to whooshing past wildebeest and millions of flamingoes in Lake Manyara, cycling allows you to go where cars can't and immerse yourself in the wildness and beauty of the African bush at a slower pace.

When's the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

The best time to go on safari in Tanzania is generally during the dry season from June to October. The drier weather makes it easier to track wildlife as vegetation is thinner and higher concentrations of game congregate around permanent waterholes. Tanzania has two rainy seasons – the 'long rains' from April to May and the 'short rains' from November to December. The long rains bring high humidity and tropical downpours while the short rains see brief showers. Despite the rain and the thicker vegetation which can make it more difficult to spot wildlife, it's usually less crowded, everything lush and green, and there are more baby animals around.

If you visit between May and September, you may get to experience the annual Great Migration (there's no way to predict when it'll happen, but it's usually within these months). This epic natural phenomenon sees millions of wildebeest (often mixed with herds of zebra and antelope – followed by hungry lions!) travel across the Serengeti in search of water as the dry season sets in. As you can imagine, this is the experience of a lifetime.

Am I guaranteed to see animals?

We can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, but you’d have to be seriously unlucky to see no animals at all. On our safaris, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of species and your expert driver and local leader will be on hand to point you in the right direction (literally).

What are the "Big Five"?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for a safari in Tanzania?

Loose, light layers in neutral colours are the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our  ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari in Tanzania?

It depends on the trip style you've chosen. On our Basix trips, you’ll have a cook travelling with you who'll whip up a variety of local and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there'll be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. One thing's for sure: you definitely won't be going hungry on safari!

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have private bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Will I be able to use my mobile phone on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however, internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t think twice about emails and social media when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Are Intrepid's Tanzania safaris accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our  accessible travel page  for more information.

Depart London on your scheduled, overnight flight to Kilimanjaro international airport.

On arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel just outside Arusha. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to settle in and relax.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Following breakfast, you will depart your hotel for your first taste of African safari in the beautiful Tarangire National Park. Open the roof of your jeep to view wild elephants marching across meandering rivers set against a background of grassy savannahs interspersed with the iconic Baobab tree, Africa's 'Tree of Life'. As well as reputedly home to the largest elephant population in the world, Tarangire is also thought to be Tanzania's premier bird watching destination. Following your safari leave the park for your accommodation on the shores of Lake Burunge.

Leave Tarangire and make your way up into highlands of the Great Rift valley for a relaxing stay overnight. Stop en route at the Mto Wa Mbu Village, where approximately 120 tribes reside, and have a local lunch. You will then continue onto Karatu where you will visit a coffee plantation.

This morning you will drive into Ngorongoro National Park. This exhilarating journey climbs up to the rim of the crater into mist-shrouded mountain forests over 2300 metres above sea level and then down into the semi-arid planes of the park. You will then have an opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai village. Sit on cowhide beds inside a thatched hut as the village chief's son explains in English the way of life, history and proud traditions of his people as well as showing you around the Kraal - a truly amazing experience and a great privilege. Continue on to Africa's best and most famous wildlife reserve, the awe-inspiring Serengeti National Park*. Enjoy an afternoon safari at one of the greatest wildlife-watching destinations on earth. Afterwards, arrive at your lodge for an unforgettable two-night stay in the heart of the wild Africa. *Packed lunch en-route to Serengeti

The Serengeti - meaning 'endless plains' in Maasai - stretches over 1.5 million hectares and is home to the annual Great Migration, in which over two million antelope travel north up to the Maasai Mara, following the ancient rhythms of the African seasons. This really is one of the greatest shows on earth. The Serengeti is also renowned for its predators, especially lions. Watch these majestic creatures in their natural habitat alongside leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, giraffe, zebras, buffalo and much more against the spectacular backdrop of rolling grasslands dotted with flat-top acacia trees and rocky outcrops. Today's full day safari is a highlight of the tour and a once in a lifetime experience.

Today you will leave the Serengeti and travel to the Ngorongoro Crater. Over three million years old, this ancient crater is the largest caldera - collapsed volcano - in the world and home to the highest density of lions and predators on the planet. Endangered black rhino are protected within the crater, hippos cool themselves in the soda lakes whilst giant-tusked elephants roam the grasslands and leopards recline on acacia trees in the enchanting Lerai forest. A truly magical day of safari awaits. Afterwards, ascend the ridge to spend your last night up in the mountains.

This morning will be at leisure before departing for your overnight stay in Arusha.

Breakfast & Dinner

This morning will be at leisure before your afternoon transfer back to Arusha in order to catch your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival transfer to your chosen beach hotel.

This day is yours to spend at leisure.

The week on safari could not have been better. It was our best holiday yet. This was due in large part to Zablon our guide who found so much wildlife fir us. The lodges overall were very good. The Blue Bay hotel was excellent and the staff so friendly and helpful.

Ranjit Manghnani

Fantastic safari holiday and the highlight was the Elephant chasing after our 4x4 jeep and to see a Fully grown Leopard walking across our path.

Anne Watson

We have just returned from the most amazing holiday on safari to Tanzania. Our guide Zablon was amazing. There is nothing we could fault on this holiday. Even the weather although the tail end of the wet season was perfect. We did fill in a questionnaire before we left. Our stay in Zanzibar while at a lovely hotel, The Sultan Sands, where the staff could not do enough for us. We were met at the airport and transferred. Arranging to meet the rep the following day. Unfortunately all the information was in French and he seemed very surprised that we did not speak French in England. We arranged a taxi through the hotel to take us out. While none of this spoilt our holiday in any way, we have travelled with you many times and thought this was not up to your usual standard.

Anna Shapter

I was absolutely thrilled with the holiday. It was a dream come true and far better than I had dared to hope. Everything in Tanzania was wonderful, all the hotels were superb, the food was fantastic (and I am a fussy vegetarian), the organisation marvellous and the guides truly lovely – helpful, informative, nothing too much trouble and great fun. Tanzania is a lovely country and the safari ‘parks’ utterly unbelievable both in the amazing amount of wildlife and the glorious vistas which the best camera in the world would have difficulty in photographing. The standard of the hotels was truly astonishing, the food and service excellent and overall made the holiday – especially as a single traveller – amazing value for money. The overall holiday was wonderful and my thanks to absolutely everybody concerned for making my dream come true. I am definitely thinking of doing Costa Rica next year.

This tour is accessible to most people with an average level of fitness and normal mobility. It involves full days of sightseeing, often on foot and includes some hiking, climbing of stairs and getting on and off 4X4 vehicles. Many of the roads in Tanzania are unpaved and so journeys can sometimes be long and bumpy. Please note that this tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

The currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (Tsh) but USD ($) is also widely accepted. Credit cards are not widely accepted and some establishments only accept Tanzanian Shillings, so it is advisable to have cash in both currencies. You can exchange money before you leave the UK and there will be access to ATMs in most major cities (not available in the reserves) where you will be able to withdraw money in the local currency.

Zanzibar's currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). We recommend that you exchange your currency before you leave the UK. It is important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in your local currency.

As normal practice you may be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card, you may be asked for a cash deposit. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels as well as American Express.

You will need to take money with you to cover any personal purchases such as souvenirs, laundry, any meals not included in the itinerary as well as drinks and any additional snacks. We recommend you take a minimum of GBP £200 per person. It is a good idea to try and maintain a supply of small notes and change in either the local currency or US Dollars for tipping or small purchases.

Tipping It is at your discretion to tip your driver/guide, waiters, porters, and housekeepers. We recommend tipping approximately $2 per person per day for waiters, porters, and housekeepers and $7 per person per day for your driver/guide. This is a total of $56 per person to budget for tips on your trip for the driver/guide plus extra for the other staff. Tips are accepted US dollars ($).

The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 6, and the maximum will be 20. If in the unlikely event there are less than 6 people booked on your tour date, we will endeavour to reduce any disruption to your holiday and try to operate your tour with lower passenger numbers. Your stay in Zanzibar is not escorted by a tour guide. Your time here will be free to do as you wish. Details of your departure transfer will be confirmed by your guide at the end of your tour at Kilimanjaro airport, before you begin your extension stay in Zanzibar.

Throughout your tour, you will travel in a 7 seater vehicle that is adapted for both open road driving as well as safaris.

Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character, and can range from business hotels to camps. Hotel accommodation is generally rated as local three to four-star standard, but please note there is no international classification system for hotels, and differences in facilities and quality do exist between the UK and Tanzania. All group tour hotels have private bathroom facilities, other facilities differ depending on the accommodation. The safari lodges may also have restrictions on electricity accessibility at certain times of the day. Western and international food will be served however some establishments will serve traditional meals giving you a chance to experience local flavours. Vegetarian and Vegan options available, please request prior to departure. Please contact Customer Experience for questions about other dietary requirements or allergy information. Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island and very conservative. Beach wear is acceptable at the beach or the pool, but modest dress is encouraged elsewhere. Woman – cover shoulders, midriff and legs to below the knees. Men – shorts are acceptable but working around shirtless is not. During Ramadan, both men and woman need to keep legs completely covered while in public. Due to the weather in Zanzibar, lightweight clothing is essential.

Holidays to tanzania.

There can be few places on earth with the diversity of this fabulous East African nation. From the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro to the golden sandy beaches of Zanzibar , a holiday to Tanzania is quite extraordinary.

Wide open plains which abound with wildlife, volcanic craters and lush forests are all waiting to be discovered on a Tanzanian safari . Heading out in the early morning or late afternoon in search of game is the most exciting part of a safari and spotting that first lion or elephant is a truly memorable experience.

The Serengeti is possibly one of the best wildlife viewing regions in the world, particularly during the wildebeest migration which moves through the park November to July. The open nature of the terrain makes it easy to spot large prides of lions and a huge variety of other plains animals. On the edge of the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater attracts both bird and wildlife with its permanent lakes, swamps and tropical forests.

Pink Flamingos

East of the Serengeti, on the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, is beautiful Lake Manyara. Large flocks of pink flamingos come to the lake to feed, along with a profusion of other wildlife. Nearby Tarangire National Park is famed for its unique baobab trees and large herds of elephant, zebra and other animals.

Indian Ocean Bliss

When the safari is over, however, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean await. The old spice island of Zanzibar offers a fascinating mix of cultures, incredible beaches and top class resorts, and makes a perfect combination with the mainland’s wildlife.
