30 Days Without Alcohol: Timeline & What to Expect

Completing 30 days without alcohol is a huge accomplishment and it’s within your reach. In 2024, 25% of US adults who regularly drink alcohol completed the Dry January challenge. Whether you’re participating in a sobriety challenge like Dry January or Sober September , cutting alcohol out for good, or somewhere in between, there are certain changes you might expect during month one of sobriety. Of course, everyone’s experience will be somewhat different. But knowledge is power, and to help set expectations, I’ll be sharing some common experiences I’ve seen with my recovery coaching clients, and in my own sobriety journey.

It’s also vital to consult a medical professional before you stop drinking. Alcohol withdrawal is a serious medical concern, and you should make a plan with your physician to ensure that you can start cutting back safely.

What Are the First 24 Hours Without Alcohol Like?

The first 24 hours alcohol-free, also known as ‘day one,’ can be challenging, scary, and motivating all at once. Physically, you may experience acute withdrawal symptoms , which can occur within one week of quitting alcohol. These uncomfortable symptoms can include:

  • Cold sweats
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Unquenchable thirst

Acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms can range from mild to severe, and the severe symptoms can be dangerous or even life-threatening. That’s why that initial physician consultation is so important, and with Monument, you can see a physician using your existing health insurance. Prices for visits are completely transparent and you’ll be told upfront what the cost will be based on your specific insurance.

On the emotional side, many people experience a strong self of resolve in the first 24 hours. Thinking thoughts like “that was my last drink” is common, and the good news is – that truly can be the last time you drank. There can also be a mix of anxiety and excitement when anticipating the journey ahead. It’s completely normal to feel a wide range of symptoms and emotions at the start of 30 days without alcohol. Reaching out to a sobriety community or speaking with a specialized therapist can help you feel supported and encouraged as you begin this rewarding experience.

The First Week Without Alcohol

Sometimes the second day can be even harder than the first, because many of the physical symptoms remain, yet that previous excitement around the initial decision not to drink may be wavering. This is natural, especially because you may start experiencing alcohol cravings at this time. There are lots of tools to help curb cravings, including medication to stop drinking . Seeking out sobriety tools can help you get through urges without relying solely on willpower.

During these first few days of sobriety, you may have trouble sleeping. Night sweats , insomnia, and frequent sleep interruptions are to be expected. These sleep disturbances occur because your body is adjusting to the absence of alcohol. Soon you’ll be on your way to more restful sleep, but in the meantime, developing a relaxing alcohol-free nighttime routine can help minimize discomfort.

By the fourth day of sobriety, many of the physical symptoms of acute withdrawal may start to subside. (Reminder: withdrawal can be dangerous, and you should speak to a physician before cutting back.) However, other symptoms may linger for weeks or even months, which can be a sign of post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). You can learn more about PAWS in this alcohol recovery timeline . No matter the duration of your withdrawal symptoms, know that they will pass.

It’s likely the past few days have been challenging as your body is healing from the effects of alcohol. There may be some thoughts like “do I really have to do this for 25 more days!?” Remember that it will get easier, and you only have to get through one day at a time. Social gatherings may seem like too much right now, and it’s okay to give yourself some extra rest and time to heal.

By day 6, you’re likely to have experienced some fluctuation in your mood and motivation. Your mental health can also be affected in the first week of sobriety . You might experience mood swings and intense emotions that alcohol was previously numbing. Engaging in alcohol therapy can help you work through these feelings with expert guidance.

Making it through the first week is an amazing achievement – go you! The worst of the physical symptoms will most likely be behind you, and you’ll have made it through a weekend without drinking. You may have also had to say no to alcohol when in a social situation, which can be really hard. Soak up the feeling of accomplishment!

"Future you is so grateful for the work you're putting in right now"

The Second Week Without Alcohol

Okay, one week down. As you spend less time and energy managing physical symptoms, you may be wondering – what do I do with all this free time I used to spend drinking or recovering from drinking? Feelings of boredom are common around this time. Finding fun alcohol-free activities can help you distract yourself from alcohol cravings and build new routines.

You might encounter feelings of restlessness or irritability around this time. The road ahead might feel long. When these feelings come up, it’s a great time to connect with others who are farther along in their journey, whether locally or through online support groups .

Around day 10, you might experience your first full night of quality sleep. You might realize you’re having more dreams than you did before, and waking up feeling more rested and energized. If this doesn’t happen for you at this time – don’t worry. Everyone’s recovery from alcohol looks different.

By now you might be feeling great in the mornings, have less alcohol-related anxiety, experience more mental clarity, and feel a deeper sense of appreciation for waking up without hangxiety or shame.

While this is often a time people experience much higher quality sleep, it’s also common to have vivid dreams of drinking alcohol and wake up disoriented. Dreaming about alcohol is a totally normal part of any sobriety journey.

Alcohol cravings may continue to arise well into week 2 and beyond, and are likely to be strongest at a particular time each day. Try to schedule a rewarding activity for this “witching hour” timeframe. Each time we make it through an alcohol craving, we get stronger. We realize that these cravings will subside naturally on their own.

Another week down! You rock. While everyone’s timeline is different, many people start to feel the benefits of sobriety more fully with two weeks down. If this is enough motivation to take you into week 3, that’s great. If you’re feeling like you can use some encouragement heading into the second half of the month, you’re not alone. Check in via a support group or with your therapist.

"7 ways to have a happy hour without alcohol: drive up to a sunset view with friends, have an alcohol-free cocktail tasting, go to a yoga or dance class, head to the park with a frisbee or other games, seek out food & snack happy hour deals, visit or volunteer at an animal shelter, do a hands-on project like painting or baking"

The Third Week Without Alcohol

By the start of three weeks without alcohol , it’s likely you’ll have developed new ways to fill the time you once spent drinking. Maybe you’ve picked up a new workout routine, daily journaling practice, or started a new podcast. Having activities to look forward to is a big step in recovery.

In addition to healthier activities, at this point, you’ll likely enjoy a more normal appetite. It’s common to maintain a more steady diet in sobriety, instead of skipping breakfast the morning after drinking, for example.

Many people report less intense alcohol cravings during this timeframe. However, it’s worth mentioning that alcohol cravings can be replaced with cravings for sugar. Many alcoholic beverages are high in sugar, and your body is still in recovery mode. While turning to sugar instead of alcohol is okay in the short term for most, you should work with your physician and therapist to identify healthier ways to cope with cravings.

Day 18! Keep up the nice work. Speaking of work, you’ll likely experience increased productivity and concentration at whatever it is you’re doing, whether that be working, studying, or reading.

By this time, it’s likely you’ve seen a few of the people closest to you (friends, family, coworkers). Without the influence of alcohol, you might notice that you’re arguing less, and can have more authentic conversations. If you’re still feeling irritable, or if you’re not on the same page as your loved ones, that’s okay too! That’s also common, and a great topic to discuss in a support group .

Did you find the fountain of youth?! Probably not, but with almost 3 weeks of sobriety behind you, you may feel – and even look – rejuvenated. Often our skin improves as a result of cutting alcohol out of our lives, including fewer bags under our eyes. Just one of the many reasons to love sobriety .

Each week feels like a milestone, and this week might feel like your best one yet. You may feel a boost in your overall wellness and satisfaction with life. 21 days is a major accomplishment, and something to be really proud of.

"having a craving? Practice S.O.B.E.R. Stop: pause all activity and focus on yourself. Observe: Focus your senses on the craving and take time to sit with it. Breathe: Take a few deep breaths or do a breathing exercise. Expand: think past the craving and consider the consequences if you did drink. Respond: address the craving like it's a person and tell it why you won't drink today."

The Fourth Week Without Alcohol

Alcohol causes inflammation , and it can take a few weeks for this side effect to wear off. By the fourth week, inflammation-related symptoms may improve, and you might notice a slimmer face, reduced bloating, and less joint pain.

You may still feel post-acute withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and fatigue. This is totally normal as your body adjusts to its new normal without alcohol. Post acute withdrawal symptoms can persist on and off for weeks or even months.

It’s possible that you may experience a setback somewhere throughout your journey, whether it’s a few weeks in, or a few months down the road. It’s important to remember that setbacks don’t erase progress, and to re-engage with your support systems in order to combat complacency. And if you do drink one day, remember that a 96% sober month is still pretty amazing.

Time to check in with your doctor, perhaps? Health improvements can be super encouraging. Getting your liver or blood pressure checked by your doctor can help you feel motivated to continue the journey of recovery, and reduce long-term effects of alcohol on the body .

Perhaps a weekend falls on day 26. You might realize that you look forward to weekend mornings now instead of dreading hangovers and hangxiety . Spending quality family time or pursuing our hobbies becomes much more fulfilling than alcohol use. Now you can check out the farmers’ market, go on a long walk, or make some progress on that DIY project.

You might feel a surge of excitement that you’re so close to achieving your goal of 30 days of sobriety. Take time to look back and reflect on how far you’ve come! Journaling can be a great way to document the ups-and-downs, and learn from your past experiences.

With almost 30 days sober, you might start looking ahead, too. You might think: “I like how I feel now. I should stay sober.” You might also think, “Good to know I can do this! Should I go back to drinking, with this new perspective?” All of these thoughts are normal. This is a great time to imagine your ideal self , and reflect on your values and goals. Working with a therapist can be especially helpful in identifying next steps.

After contemplating your future with alcohol, you might also experience stronger than usual alcohol cravings. You can get through them! Learn on the strategies that have worked for you in the past to get through these urges.

You did it! Day 30 is a monumental accomplishment. You’ll have navigated some obstacles, started exploring new routines, and expanded the tools in your sobriety toolkit. You feel better mentally and physically, and proved that you can do hard things. Remember to take time to reflect and relish in your incredible progress.

What Happens After 30 Days Without Alcohol?

After a month of sobriety, you might start to consider if abstinence or moderation is right for you. Reflecting on what you discovered over the last 30 days and working with a therapist can help you determine what next steps are right for you. And remember, you’re not alone in your recovery journey. Some people choose to explore moderation, and others decide to continue with total abstinence. Keeping the alcohol withdrawal experience in mind can motivate you to build upon existing progress so that you don’t have to go through those symptoms again.

Sobriety Sampling: Voluntarily Quitting Alcohol for 30 Days

Can taking a short break from drinking make a difference absolutely..

Posted April 26, 2022 | Reviewed by Abigail Fagan

  • Taking a 30-90 day break from alcohol can put you in a better position to succeed in learning to drink in moderation.
  • Even a month-long break from alcohol is associated with healthier drinking over time. You can break free of problematic drinking habits.
  • Taking a time-limited break runs counter to the traditional abstinence-only approach—but it may be the approach that works for you.

There is evidence that taking a short break from alcohol can yield significant benefits and initiate meaningful change, especially in people concerned about the negative impact that drinking may be having on their lives.

If you or a loved one is a heavy drinker, taking a short break from drinking can open new possibilities, including learning to drink in moderation.

Can one month without drinking really open the door to change?

A. Washton

“Dry January”—voluntarily quitting alcohol for one month to start off a new year—is a growing phenomenon here in the United States and in parts of Europe. Several studies have found that in the months following completion of a “Dry January” many participants drink less, drink less often and feel a greater sense of self-control over their drinking. A study of 857 British adults found that at a six-month follow-up, the month-long break from alcohol was associated with healthier drinking.

An “Experiment with Abstinence”

Addiction psychologists, especially those practicing within a harm reduction or motivational model (the present author included), often suggest (similar to “Dry January”) a trial of “Sobriety Sampling” or an “Experiment with Abstinence” as the first step for individuals who do not want or need to stop drinking forever.

Taking a time-limited break runs counter to the traditional abstinence-only approach in the addiction field. In the traditional approach, anyone suffering from a significant alcohol problem should abstain permanently and completely from alcohol.

The evidence for sobriety sampling

The evidence shows that trying out or “experimenting” with change even for a relatively short period of time (as many “Dry January” participants experienced) can yield significant benefits and “jump-start” more lasting change.

I often suggest a period of 30-90 days to my clients, leaving the final decision up to the individual.

10 potential benefits from short-term abstinence

Some potential benefits (not an exhaustive list!) that you might accrue from an experiment with abstinence include:

  • It can put you in a better position to succeed with moderation after breaking your habitual drinking pattern that has gone on “automatic pilot.” Temporary abstinence can be a good launching pad for attempting moderation considering the useful information it provides about the role of alcohol in your life and what triggers heavy drinking.
  • It provides a unique opportunity to see things through a “different set of eyes” and to acquire valuable information about ways in which you think, feel, and behave in the absence of alcohol that is simply not attainable by other means.
  • It helps to reveal the nature and extent of your attachment to alcohol, including the degree to which you rely on altering your mood with alcohol to cope with stress , other negative emotions, and have fun.
  • It gives you greater access to your emotions and an opportunity to learn how to deal with them more effectively.
  • It gives you a chance to experience rapid change and build greater confidence in your ability to exert self-control.
  • It helps you identify more clearly the internal (environmental) and external (emotional) “triggers” of heavy drinking.
  • It can help you rapidly reduce conflicts with family members and significant others (e.g., spouse, parents, etc.) and begin to increase trust.
  • It gives you an indication of how easy or difficult it is for you to actually stop drinking.
  • It exposes voids and unmet needs in your life that you may be trying to cope with by distracting yourself with alcohol.
  • It may enhance or restore the effectiveness of prescribed medications you are taking for other problems such as depression or anxiety .

There are lots of things you can do to maintain your sobriety, starting with the physical. Read on for some tips that will help you figure out how to stay sober for 30 days.

What Happens After 30 Days of Sobriety?

Before we dive into the specific ways that you can stay physically sober for 30 days. Let’s talk about what happens to your body after you’ve been sober for 30 days.

Something that holds a lot of people back from pursuing sobriety is a fear of the unknown. Addicts want to know what to expect and be prepared for when they give up their drug of choice. They might find themselves googling “30 days sober what to expect”.

Let’s not sugar-coat it. There are going to be challenges when you begin your sobriety journey. There will be times when you don’t feel very well physically. Luckily, though, the benefits you will experience being sober for 30 days will far outweigh the negatives.

When you know the physical benefits when you give alcohol for 30 days may motivate you to take the plunge and seek Alcohol Abuse Treatment. Here are some of the main changes that you can expect:

Common physical symptoms of withdrawal you can expect to experience during your first 30 days of sobriety.

During the first 30 days of sobriety, it’s common to experience withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms include headaches, chills, mood swings, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and intense cravings. If you or a loved one are currently experiencing withdrawal symptoms, please call Sobriety Solutions.

Liver Relief

Withdrawal symptoms are challenging to handle. There are a lot of positive things that go on when you give up alcohol, though.

For example, your liver gets to experience some relief now that it’s no longer working overtime to detox your body. It can focus on other vital processes, such as fat and hormone metabolization.

Weight Loss

Many people find that they lose weight after they get sober which is especially true of people who have been relying too heavily on alcohol. When they stop consuming so many calories from alcoholic beverages, they’re able to shed excess pounds and reach a healthier weight and feel more energetic. Here is a story about one man’s journey with sobriety and weight loss. Jason lost 100 pounds after getting sober.

Decreased Heart Disease Risk

Sobriety decreases your risk of serious illnesses like heart disease. When your liver doe not have the burden of alcohol and can function properly, your cholesterol levels can improve. An alcohol-free liver, in turn, helps to minimize your risk of experiencing heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues.

How to Stay Sober for 30 Days

Are you feeling a little more motivated to begin your 30-day Sober challenge? If you want to experience the physical benefits of sobriety but aren’t sure how to stay sober for a month, here are some things you can do:

Remove Yourself from Temptation

Hip man under water sitting in chair reaching for alcohol bottles floating. He is trying to stay sober but alcohol temptation is all around.

One of the most important things to do if you want to get and stay sober is to remove yourself from temptations physically.

For example, you can (and ought to) stay away from parties where you know alcohol will be present. Avoid spending time with friends or family members who consume these substances, too. You might even need to look into moving to get away from roommates who might tempt you (intentionally or otherwise).

Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

The period of trying to attain and maintain sobriety can be a lonely one. Sobriety can be isolating, especially if a lot of your friends or family members consume alcohol and have no interest in giving up.

In addition to minimizing the time you spend around these people, surround yourself with positive influences. Hang out with people who are going through or have gone through the same situation as you. Or find those who are sympathetic and won’t put you in temptation’s way.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a great place to meet people who have been in your shoes before and are currently in a place you’d like to be. You can click HERE to find an A.A. meeting near you .

It helps to have ideas in mind for how you can distract yourself during this time. Things like writing in a journal or going outside for a 10-minute walk can help you to clear your head and control your urges.

Before you embark on your sobriety journey, think about what you’re going to do when a craving arises. That way, you’ll have already decided and won’t have to rely solely on willpower to get you through.

Engage in Meaningful Activities

Woman walking down a country road with the evening sun shining a beautiful peaceful life.

Now is an excellent time to find a meaningful activity or perhaps several meaningful activities that you can become involved. Look for activities that will fill your time and help you feel better about yourself and your situation.

Exercising is a popular option for those looking to stay sober, as are outdoor activities like hiking. These activities produce endorphins and can help to minimize some of the physical effects you’ll experience after giving up drugs or alcohol.

Consider participating in charity work, too. Volunteering for a local organization will give you a sense of purpose, and you’ll have an opportunity to make new friends.

Manage Stress

Asian man listening to music

It’s imperative to manage your stress when you’re working towards your 30 days of sobriety challenge. When stressful situations arise, you’re likely going to feel more of an urge to return to your old habits.

It’s good to have a plan for how you’re going to manage urges when they happen. It also helps to proactively participate in activities that will reduce your stress and help you to be less reactive. Meditation, yoga, journaling, breathing exercises, and playing or listening to music are all great options to consider.

Manage Physical Pain and Symptoms

Man from behind with doctors hand on shoulder

You also ought to make sure you have options available to help you deal with physical pain and other symptoms of withdrawal.

Talk to your doctor about medications that can help to ease withdrawal symptoms. Managing withdrawal is not something that should try to accomplish on your own. Sobriety Solutions is here to help you navigate a successful detox from alcohol.

Participate in a Treatment Program

Speaking of treatment programs , Sobriety Solutions has year’s experience helping people successfully get sober. We are committed to helping you or your loved one achieve and maintain lifetime sobriety.

Participating in the Sobriety Solutions outpatient and PHP program gives you access to additional support and provides you with a chance to surround yourself with positive influences. You’ll also be able to separate yourself from many temptations and triggers physically.

Dave Andrews

DAVE ANDREWS is the last quit or cut back drinking resource you’ll ever need. More than a tagline, this is Dave’s mantra, one that arose out of his own battle with alcoholism and enabled a mission of helping those in a similar struggle. His story of personal turnaround, recovery, and reinvention is more than inspiring. In association with top success coach and best-selling author, Jack Canfield, Dave is the author of “The 30-Day Sobriety Solution®: How to Quit or Cut Back Drinking in the Privacy of your Own Home,” a guide for helping people thrive in sobriety. Published by Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, in January of 2016.

In drawing from his passion for coaching and family counseling, Dave is a game-changer for those who are trying to gain traction in recovery, experiencing peaks and valleys, yet falling victim to bad habits. His message of people owning their own recovery finds its outlet in his motivational speeches, workshops, and broadcast media appearances. With his wife, Dave co-owns the Whole Hearts Family Center, which provides coaching, counseling, and art therapy for children, teens, and adults. His commitment to excellence is also reflected in his deep community involvement and work with nonprofits, most notably serving on the board of Young People in Recovery.

Specializing in early sobriety, Dave focuses on eliminating addictive behaviors and paving the way for positive change. He gets to the underlying causes of what holds people back, providing them with a roadmap for creating an amazing breakthrough. David is a leader by example, encouraging others to commit to a goal and assume accountability for their actions. His supportive, proactive approach to recovery guides people to new milestones in sobriety, enabling them to accumulate success incrementally during the most trying periods.

It's not too late to book summer travel deals, these expert tips make it easier

Brian Kelly of The Points Guy explains "the goldilocks window."

For anyone still in planning mode for summer vacation , some experts say right now may be the best time to book the trip.

Founder of The Points Guy Brian Kelly explained to "GMA" that the best booking timeframe, known as the goldilocks window, can offer travelers serious savings.

"When traveling internationally, you wanna book at least 60 days in advance and domestic, the sweet spot is usually 45 days," he said.

While airlines are already bracing for record travel this summer, Kelly said to go with the deals rather than the specific destination.

"Demand for travel is strong, especially intergenerational travel," he said. "I recommend -- choose the destination where the deals are so you can spend less on airfare and hotels and spend more at your destination."

Whether you prefer road trips or all-inclusive resorts or cruises, travel experts are seeing deals across the board if you know where to look.

"We've seen great airfares this summer to Hawaii -- JFK to Honolulu we're seeing in the $400 [range] which is 40% below historical prices."

International hotspots this summer like Europe for example, has airfare that's 10% less on average than the same time last year, according to travel booking site Hopper. The average summer airfare, Hopper found, is $325 domestically and $1,000 internationally.

And Kelly reminded that the key to getting the best deal is knowing how and where to save.

"There's not one day of the week where cheap fares magically appear. If you travel on Tuesdays and Saturdays in general, those days are cheaper than flying on a Thursday, Friday or Sunday," he said.

Golden rule for booking flights: Advanced purchase requirement

Travel expert Scott Keyes of Going.com and formerly Scott's Cheap Flights, regularly reminds people to follow his golden rule of air travel : back-timing when to book based on your departure date, in order to align with an airline's "advanced purchase requirement" found in the fine print of the fare terms and conditions.

"Pull up a calendar and circle 21 days before your travel date," he said. "That needs to be your sort of drop-dead date to get your flights booked by."

Why it works.

The 30-Day Sobriety Solution is the result of seven years of research & development , and most importantly, listening to people just like you. Feedback is why this program works , and is how we will improve it, so please let us know what you think.

REACHING YOUR PEAK

If you have ever climbed a mountain you might remember looking up towards the top and thinking,   ‘that sure looks far away!’ You also might remember the first time you looked back on that hike, and how surprised you were to see how much distance you covered in a short amount of time. It might seem like your goal is impossibly far away or you might think sobriety means sacrifice, boredom, and maybe even suffering. If so, t hat’s okay.

Trust us when we tell you that w hatever the top of your mountain represents—it's far easier to reach than you think.

YOUR PERSONAL BASECAMP

Just like a basecamp provides supplies, shelter, and communications for mountain climbers, this website   provides the content, tools, and resources you need to succeed in sobriety .

time travel technique 30 day sobriety

The Phases, Solutions, Action Steps & Forums

Success starts here.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could learn things more quickly , and  be able to recall the information when you needed it (not ten minutes after). It's actually a lot easier than most people think. And is also why we say, “Success Starts Here. "

Research has demonstrated that you are able to retain more information, more easily, when you have a way to “organize” what you are learning. And when you combine this with the use of images, the results can be surprising. To some extent we all do this naturally. If you have a conversation about something you love doing, you will connect that conversation to other memories and experiences from your past, and therefore your retention and recall will be greater. But if you have a conversation about something that bores you, or maybe you don’t understand, it will become a distinct memory quickly.

The important takeaway is when you give new information a place “fit in” you give yourself a huge advantage. This dashboard is your 30-day visual snapshot of the whole program. One that helps you create a framework now, instead of later (this is why most speed reading courses tell you to be sure to read the table of contents first).

In many ways this dashboard is the ‘heartbeat’ of your program. From this page you can access any of the 30 solutions, any of the message boards for these solutions, and all of your action steps within about 10 seconds. You also can clearly see the progress you have made, as well as see what lies ahead.

And, most importantly, our hope is this resource will make it easy for you. Easy to use the site. Easy to know what to do next. Easy to find other resources when you need them. And, ultimately, easy to succeed. Where sobriety is second nature, and you finally get to see your other goals, dreams and desires become a reality. So go take a look around and then get started!
