10 Around-the-world Cruises for the Trip of a Lifetime

These world cruises offer the ultimate itineraries.

tour by ship

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking world cruise.

See 28 countries on the 138-day Viking World Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to London. After departing from Florida, the Viking Sky will sail the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, stopping in sunny destinations before crossing the Panama Canal to reach the Pacific. From there, the ship will visit destinations in Mexico and the continental United States, continuing on to Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand, and Australia. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and India are among the ports in Asia, then it's on to the Middle East before traveling to Europe, where final destinations include Italy, Spain, and Portugal en route to London. Fares start at $59,995.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Moments in time: world cruise 2024.

Sail around the world in 132 nights aboard the Seven Seas Mariner on a round-trip journey from Miami. You'll spend the days at sea enjoying the luxury ship's amenities, including the spa and several restaurants and lounges, between stops in destinations like Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, UAE, Israel, and Italy, among others. This 2024 world cruise , with fares starting at $73,499, is officially sold out , but you can join a waitlist to be notified of cancellations.

Royal Caribbean

The itinerary aboard the Serenade of the Seas begins in Miami on December 10, 2023, and visits more than 60 countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, French Polynesia, the Philippines, South Korea, India, Romania, and Greenland, before ending in Miami on September 10, 2024. Travelers who don't want to commit to the entire cruise can book shorter segments. Fares start at $59,999 for this cruise that gives travelers the opportunity to visit 11 of the great wonders of the world, including the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, and Chichen Itza.

World Cruise 2024

Enjoy 133 days on Silversea's Silver Shadow with this round-trip sailing from San Francisco. During that time, the ship will visit 65 ports in 14 countries, including Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Japan, and Canada. Fares start at $66,000 for this 2024 sailing, which currently has waitlist availability.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to destinations like the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment, all rolled into one. Some cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. Cruising means seeing the world while unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids and teens -- all for free. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship for you. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with staying at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- all their extras.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their cabins but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors.

Cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes lower. Here's a tip: Many times, the smaller ships from these lines offer the smallest prices.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

Being flexible will get you the best last-minute cruise deals. If you live near a cruise port and can drive, you're probably going to be able to jump on those deals that might pop up a week or two before the ship is set to sail.

If you don't have flexibility with dates and locations, be willing to bend on destination. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise costs on average. When you see it drop, pounce! Many cruise lines update pricing several times every day, so be prepared.

Best cruises in 2020

Part of the appeal of cruising is that there's truly something for everyone. Ships come in an array of sizes, some loaded with so many activities, you couldn't get to them all in a week.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations to which they sail. The Caribbean is a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, also is a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise lines such as Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, Celebrity, MSC and Holland America for a family cruise.

River cruising has been heating up over the past few years, with itineraries that send passengers down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to even more exotic locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam or the Volga River in Russia. Popular river cruises embark in cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. Popular river cruise lines include Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Scenic, Emerald Waterways, Tauck, Uniworld and Crystal.

If you're a thrill-seeker, consider an expedition cruise. These cruises, often onboard small ships, offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world, including Antarctica, Alaska, Australia and Greenland. Passengers will spend their time kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, Hurtigruten, Ponant and Quark Expeditions.

Luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard smaller ships with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be smaller, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships can't -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Azamara, Viking Oceans and Silversea.

Imagine for a moment that you are on the deck of a ship, sipping a glass of wine. You turn your head towards the water just in time to spot a pod of dolphins swimming by or flying fish, providing company in the ocean. After lingering in the sunshine for a while, it's time to head inside for a 3-course evening meal and a splash in the pool before retiring to bed.

Now, what kind of vessel are you on?

No, you are not on a standard commercial cruise ship. You are not on a packed luxury liner hopping between Caribbean islands. You are aboard a modern freighter. Hundreds of cargo ships, carrying everything from fire engines to apples, are crossing the world's oceans, and many are happy to take you along for the ride. Adventurous travelers, including the Transitions Abroad family, have been doing so for years, as have many long before us.

What Does Travel on a Cargo Ship Feel Like?

A far more intimate and relaxed experience than you might imagine! The experience on board contrasts sharply with the rough and industrial outward appearance a container ship tends to project. You will be one of a handful of passengers among a crew likely to number up to a dozen or a few more. There will be no evening cabaret shows as on a standard cruise, though you may have access to TV, video, and board games in a common area on the ship where passengers may meet the crew. You may even play cards with the crew under the night skies. You might be invited to karaoke with the sailors, and you will almost always dine alongside the captain, who is far more likely to turn up in shorts and a t-shirt than in full uniform. Some cargo ships also offer equipped exercise rooms or pools.

Here was our first taste of the wonders of sea travel. Our introduction to freighter travel was a relatively short 5-day sailing between Australia and New Zealand. We joined the French ship CMA CGM Utrillo in the busy port of Melbourne, where our luggage — including two bicycles and bags — was quickly hauled on board and into a spacious cabin by a host of cheery Filipino deckhands.

What are the Costs of Cargo Ship Travel?

Depending upon your destination (Transatlantic, Transpacific, South Seas, Worldwide, and other special combinations), your daily freighter travel costs will be about $100-$130 per day per person per day with a luggage allowance of approximately 30kg-100kg (66-220lbs) depending on the line you are taking. Generally, US dollars are the primary currency used onboard to buy soft drinks, snacks, beer, and toiletries. You can then use your credit cards at each location you disembark.

What kind of Hospitality Can You Expect on Board?

Our next surprise was how quickly we felt part of the family. Just moments after arriving, our fellow passenger (a French woman "going around the world in 80 days”) hinted that the captain was sure to throw us a welcome barbecue. “He does that for every one new,” she said with a wink. Sure enough, the next evening was spent on the back deck of the ship, feasting on grilled fish and chatting with the seamen as the sun went down.

One of our concerns before sailing was that we'd find the days long. It was just the opposite. There were three square meals a day (hearty plates of meat and vegetables for workers) and our time between eating was filled with strolls around the deck and trips up to the bridge to check our position and ask questions.

Had there ever been stowaways? Yes, once a harmless passenger was allowed to board. What about pirates? Not here, but there were off the coast of Africa. And just how much fuel did a cargo ship need? In the current era of relatively low oil prices, $60,000 U.S. a day will generally cover the trip.

Why is it a Relaxing Way to Travel?

With our curiosity temporarily curbed, we would return to our cabin for reading our books or Kindle, journal writing, and a bit of table tennis if we felt especially energetic. Far away from the hustle and bustle of life on firm land, we were truly relaxed. The experience was in complete contrast to our usual hurried airplane trips.

For Hamish Jamieson, the owner of Freighter Travel NZ and one of only a handful of travel agents in the world licensed to book tickets on cargo ships, the simplicity of being at sea is the main attraction.

“When you're sitting up the front of the bow of the ship, on your own, and all you see is the sea going past and you hear the wind and waves, you're in heaven. For me, an afternoon...sitting right on the bow, watching the world go by with my binoculars, that's my heaven,” he said.

What Kind of Flexibility is Needed for Freighter Travel?

Of course, nothing in life is all smooth sailing. While we didn't encounter any problems during our trip, we did struggle with the uncertain nature of freighter travel before we boarded. Our initial departure date jumped forward first by three days and then seemed to bounce around by 12-24 hours every time we called to check the latest news. Ours was not an uncommon experience and you must prepare yourself for flexibility.

Even ports of call are not guaranteed because on a cargo ship, freight comes first, not the passengers. If the demand is not there for a certain stop, the ship will go where the business is.

“Our trip from the USA to Europe changed three times after initial booking,” said Rebecca Hogue and Scott Drennan, then on a journey around the world without using airplanes . Their initial trip from South Carolina to Belgium was from Florida to Italy. “Had we not been flexible with our departure times and locations, things would not have worked out.”

As Mr. Jamieson is fond of telling his passengers, when you go to sea, there are two things you must pack: a sense of humor and a sense of patience.

What are the Practical Issues?

Your trip may also involve some red tape, particularly concerning U.S. stops. American citizens are not permitted, for example, to travel within their country by cargo ship, although they can make international journeys. Meanwhile, travelers to the United States must have a visa, even if they would not need one to arrive by air. Only Canadians are exempt from this rule.

Be sure to budget time and money to get vaccinations like Yellow Fever if you are going through the Suez and Panama canals. A medical certificate declaring you in generally good health is another typical requirement.

Where in the World Do You Want to Go?

The hardest part of booking your cargo ship voyage is deciding where to go. Will it be to South America and around Cape Horn? How about a 55-day round trip from California to Australia and New Zealand via Tahiti and Mexico? Mr. Jamieson offers a few more ideas and favorite voyages based on years of experience.

“For me the ultimate voyage is from Auckland, in New Zealand, to Singapore. It takes 40-45 days to sail what you can fly in just under 12 hours but it visits nearly every island in the Pacific on the way and it stops for 2-3 days. The second choice for me would be from Singapore through to Houston in Texas. It goes up through Thailand, Vietnam, half a dozen ports in China, into Japan, then straight across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal.”

With enough time and money at your disposal--round-the-world trips can take 80 to 100 days or more--there are few places a cargo ship can't reach. Voyage destinations on cargo ships can change, so the many options available will often surprise you. You need to be adventurous enough to do your research, find a specialized cargo ship travel agent (see resources below), and then get on board.

The Golden Rules of Cargo Ship Travel

  • Be prepared to make your own fun. There are seldom programmed activities aside from the odd safety drill.
  • Go before you're too old. An upper age limit of 77-80 years is not uncommon, as no doctor on board and there are often plenty of stairs.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers freighter travel.
  • Be flexible. Schedules can and do change frequently. You may need 2-3 ships to reach your destination.
  • Book in advance. Cabins are limited and the most popular routes can be sold out by ships months ahead.
  • Forget about working in exchange for your passage. Current union rules mean this is no longer permitted.
  • Take a good supply of seasickness pills. While not very common, rough weather can occur, sending tables, chairs, and your stomach flying across the room.
  • Wifi and other modern electronics are now often available on cargo ships for travelers . If connectivity is important to you, ask whether those options are accessible and free in advance.

Jeet's 7 days trip to Andaman

We were welcomed at the airport and dropped at Hotel. The rooms in BayleafIn were very small but clean. Hardly space to walk after keeping the luggage.Food was good. At the evening we were kept stranded at Corbyn's cove and after repeated calls they send us a 4 seater car for 6 for pick up. No proper dissemination of information. Because of this we were late for the light show at cellular jail. Trip to havelock and niel was good but for elephanta Beach travel they provided a jetty without cover. It was difficult for us to sit with children and it was a very slow boat. While returning from Neil our tickets were scattered in cruise ,difficult to travel in such way. No swimming pool at neil island. Had to shift rooms as AC was not working..At portblair I was completely misguided as from 2PM to 4 PM we were kept at hotel due to non availability of vehichle. They didn't show the museum and market got closed while the cab reached. Not a perfect tour as expected. Water Sports at Elephanta beach, Radhanagar Beach and Neil Island tour.

Jits's 4 days trip to Andaman

It was really a great trip. Thanks to Holiday feet. It was a very well co-ordinated and no problem as such. Just one feedback I have whenever there is a payment issue between coordinators in different places, please do not ask us to leave the car or wait until the payment is done. They directly asked us to wait at the beach and saying your payment was not clear so we could not help you. Though the payment was done after few minutes but make sure it's already done or it will be done afterwards. Rest everything was great

While rain is common, your small ship captain can navigate to windward and leeward sides of islands to take advantage of unique microclimates and steer you away from rain storms. Taking a Hawaii island hopping cruise can truly ensure you land in the best weather during your vacation.

An AdventureSmith expert shares his experience on the 8-day Hawaiian Seascapes cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer.

What’s the first question a newly-married couple gets? “Where did you guys go on your Honeymoon?” We are outdoorsy and adventurous. We enjoy hiking and getting out there, we want to experience things that others could only read about. We didn't want to completely rough it on our honeymoon but we also didn't want the resort or the 2,000 person cruise ship.

As I drift off to sleep I begin to dream of the amazing experiences that I couldn't even have imagined only seven days ago. I dream of diving with manta rays, of Pele, the goddess of fire, of paddle boarding at Shark's Fin Cove and swimming in the cool water under the cascading falls of Moâ'oula.

What Travelers Say About Their Hawaiian Island Cruises

We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit!

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

The trip leaders were all excellent. Friendly, accommodating, helpful, fun. No request was ever too much, unless it was unsafe.

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most...mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

Accommodations Review

The room on Safari Explorer was very nice. Bed was very comfortable!

Crew & Guides Review

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

Traveler Advice

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

This is a well tuned adventure. The staff are very experienced with the itinerary, the excursions and activities, the ship, and seemed to really enjoy working with each other. The itinerary is busy if you participate in everything, but allows opting out choices for people who want to relax. The route is a slow pace, and flexible to allow for sudden changes in weather or whale sightings. The weather was perfect, and we got up close and personal with whales, dolphins, green sea turtles and many fish while snorkeling. We also got insights into life in the less visited islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i.

The rooms are pleasant, simple and functional. There was plenty of hot and fresh water. The beds are very comfortable.

The food was excellent - local, varied, and very flexible. The pastry chef was even more amazing. For this particular chef, he seemed to love garlic and salt. I would recommend easing up on both.

It's a fabulous adventure.

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper.  They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

Best Fleet Week NYC 2024 Activities for Families

The Intrepid Museum acts as a home base for many Fleet Week activities, including the return of its popular annual summer movie nights series on Friday, May 24, when it offers a FREE screening of Top Gun: Maverick .

If that's too late for your crew, consider visiting during the daytime for tons of FREE fun on the pier outside the museum, where fun-filled activities abound from Saturday, May 25-Monday, May 27. Take in demonstrations at the US Coast Guard Dive Training Tank, climb aboard an Air Force flight simulator, or try on tactical gear and pose for a "Selfie with a Soldier" courtesy of the US Army.

Legoland Westchester, The Planetarium Guy, Epic Balloons, and other kid-centric entertainers provide fun diversions, and kids can lend support to troops by joining the USO to sign a flag and send a message of gratitude to active duty service members.

Beyond the Intrepid Museum, Times Square is a hub of activity, with pageantry on full display during nightly concerts from the Navy Band North East's Brass Band, US Fleet Forces Rock Band, and the Marine Corps Band.

Ships Visiting Fleet Week NYC 2024

Of course, what would Fleet Week be without the fleet? Several ships are set to sail into New York Harbor, docking in NYC's waters and offering FREE tours so visitors can get an up-close view of military vessels from the United States fleet. Two German ships also join the celebration. Here's when and where you can tour each ship:

  • Manhattan's Pier 88 South: Amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, tours on Saturday, May 25 from 9am-4pm
  • Manhattan's Pier 90 North: Baden-Württemberg-class frigate FGS Baden-Württemberg and Berlin-class replenishment ship FGS Frankfurt am Main, tours on Saturday, May 25 from 9am-4pm
  • Manhattan's Pier 86 (near the Intrepid Museum): US Naval Academy Yard Patrol Boats, tours on Thursday, May 23-Friday, May 24 from 10am-5pm; USCG cutter Sturgeon Bay, tours Thursday, May 23-Monday, May 27, 10am-5pm
  • Staten Island's Homeport Pier, freedom-class littoral combat ship USS Marinette, legend-class cutter USCGC Calhoun, keeper-class coastal buoy tender USCGC Katherine Walker, tours Thursday, May 23-Monday, May 27 from 8am-5pm

A note about ship tours: Go early in the day! Lines can get long. Pack plenty of patience, snacks, and comfortable shoes. Last year, adults had to present a valid ID at security, which included bag checks and walking through a metal detector. We did enjoy a rocking live band and museum-style information displays while we weaved our way through the queue.

Intrepid Museum's Memorial Day Ceremony

A poignant highlight of the Fleet Week festivities is always the Intrepid Museum's Memorial Day Ceremony. Held on Monday, May 27 at 10am, visitors can join civic and military leaders for a wreath-laying ceremony on Pier 86, followed by a flyover from US Navy jets. It's a touching tribute to service members who have given their lives to protect our freedom.

2024 PGA Championship odds, predictions: Five sleepers who could surprise by claiming Wanamaker Trophy

The second major championship of the year isn't immune to the occasional long-shot winner.

sahith-theegala-usatsi-cbs.jpg

The PGA Championship returns to Valhalla Golf Club for the first time in a decade. Back in 2014, it was Rory McIlroy who raised his second Wanamaker Trophy in a race both against the dark and the likes of Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. While McIlroy was the favorite to take home the title at the onset of the week, the man who he played alongside in the final pairing on Sunday, Bernd Wiesberger, was a bit of an unknown.

Unknowns, long shots, sleepers -- whatever you want to call them -- they have made contending at the PGA Championship somewhat of a habit over the years. Some have even proven to be victorious. While Brooks Koepka was hardly a sleeper in 2023, Mito Pereira was the definition of one at Southern Hills. Standing on the tee on the 72nd hole with a one-stroke lead, the Chilean looked primed to cash a 200-1 ticket for his faithful backers. Instead, heartbreak ensued.

That type of emotion can only stem from the underdogs; just ask Phil Mickelson. At age 50, Mickleson became the oldest player to win a major championship with his unlikely triumph at the Ocean Course in 2021. Getting the better of Koepka on Kiawah Island, Mickelson cashed his sixth major victory and a hefty 250-1 price tag for his fans.

Here's a look at some players who may follow in the footsteps of Wiesberger and Pereira as potential contenders this week at Valhalla. Perhaps one will take the path of Mickelson straight into the winner's circle at the 2024 PGA Championship. You can also check out a full slate of PGA Championship picks and expert predictions ahead of the year's second major.

The five best bets to win this year’s PGA Championship

To identify PGA Championship contenders, we can combine current form with what we know about this year’s course, Valhalla in Louisville.

tour by ship

Predicting the PGA Championship winner is a much different beast than doing so for the Masters , considering that Augusta National hosts that tournament every year and thus has some extremely sticky course history (i.e., certain types of golfers seem to play well there every year). Because the PGA Championship is played on a different track each year, course history is generally thrown out the window, though this year’s host, Valhalla in Louisville, has hosted the tournament three times, most recently in 2014, and a number of golfers in this year’s field were among the participants 10 years ago.

So we’re left to rely a whole lot on current form, which has proved to be a good predictor for PGA Championship success. We’ll combine that with what we know about the course to try to identify a winner.

Here are a few aspects I’m considering:

  • The PGA Championship is the only major championship that does not extend invitations to amateur players, though 20 spots are set aside for PGA club professionals. Therefore, the tournament annually garners the highest strength-of-field rating as compiled by the Official World Golf Ranking. Though the PGA has produced some surprise winners in the past 15 years — Jimmy Walker, Jason Dufner and Y.E. Yang say hello — it has become increasingly unlikely that an unheralded player will topple the world’s greats.
  • As with all majors, the PGA Championship winner almost always enters in great form: 17 of the past 18 champions made the cut in their previous tournament, and the one exception — Brooks Koepka last year — plays on a LIV Golf circuit that does not have cut lines. Three of those 18 champions were coming off a win, nine finished in the top five in their previous outing (including Koepka last year), and all but two finished in the top 20 in their most recent event.
  • Of the past 20 PGA Championship winners, 15 had won a tournament in the same calendar year. Nineteen had at least three top-10 finishes, and all 20 had at least one top-20 finish in the same calendar year (although the PGA Championship used to fall later in the year, allowing for more time to accomplish such feats).
  • Five of the past six PGA Championship winners already had a major win on their résumés. The one who didn’t — Collin Morikawa in 2020 — has since won another major (the 2021 British Open).
  • This is another issue of small sample size, but in the four PGA Championships played in May since 2019, three of the winners also finished in the top 10 in that year’s Masters. (Phil Mickelson, the outlier in 2021, finished tied for 21st at Augusta that year.) This year’s Masters top 10: Scottie Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, Xander Schauffele, Tyrrell Hatton, Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris.

After some tinkering, Valhalla will play long — 151 yards longer than in 2014 and the third-longest course among PGA Tour venues this year. It also should be firm and fast, unless it rains a whole lot to take the starch out of the greens, as happened 10 years ago. The rough will be up, too. However, low scores were predominant the past two times Valhalla hosted the PGA Championship. In 2014, when Rory McIlroy won the tournament at 16 under par, there were 179 rounds below par, fourth most in tournament history, and 58 players finished under par, with 14 of them at least 10 under. In 2000, Tiger Woods and Bob May set what was then the PGA Championship stroke-play record at 18 under before Woods won in a playoff.

Valhalla, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus , also has a number of quirks ( some would say to its detriment ). The par-5 seventh hole features a split fairway, which allegedly rewards drives that choose the riskier left path. There’s also an elevated island green at the par-4 13th (island greens on par-4s are relatively rare) and a horseshoe-shaped green at the finishing hole.

In general, we’re looking for big hitters (McIlroy ranked second in driving distance when he won at Valhalla in 2014) and — considering the course’s length — players who are accurate with long irons on their second shots.

Here are a few bets worth considering at this year’s PGA Championship. All odds taken Wednesday morning from DraftKings Sportsbook .

Scottie Scheffler (+400)

We were on the world No. 1 to win the Masters , which he did, for a second time. Picking Scheffler to win a golf tournament kind of feels like cheating at this point — he followed up his win at Augusta with another one the next weekend and has won four of his past five starts, with the one miss a tie for second — but until someone takes him down, he needs your consideration, even at semi-ridiculous odds. The one caveat this week is that Scheffler’s wife just gave birth to their first child , so who knows where his mind is. Still, Scheffler doesn’t seem to get fazed by much.

Rory McIlroy (+750)

While Scheffler was on baby watch, McIlroy filled the void with two wins in three weeks, one in a team event with Shane Lowry and another when he shredded Quail Hollow’s back nine to race past Xander Schauffele on Sunday at the Wells Fargo. And now you’re telling me he gets to play an arguably easier course, and one at which he already has won? If Scheffler is the world’s best golfer at the moment, McIlroy is the one with the most momentum, and he has to be a consideration at Valhalla.

Brooks Koepka (+1600)

The defending tournament champion enters in fine form, having won the most recent LIV Golf event in Singapore earlier this month and tied for ninth in the tournament that preceded it. Koepka’s Grand Slam record is absurd: In 39 major championship appearances, he has five wins (three at the PGA), four second-place finishes and nine other top-10s. Koepka hits the ball a mile, and it’s hard not to like his chances this week.

Bryson DeChambeau (+2800)

DeChambeau no longer is cartoonishly muscle-bound, but he still has plenty of power off the tee — he leads LIV in driving distance — which should serve him well here. DeChambeau has finished in the top eight in three of the past six majors, including at this year’s Masters (at a course where he previously never played well), and he has four top-10s on the LIV circuit this season. Plus, his 2020 U.S. Open win was at Winged Foot , which might prove to be a favorable comp to Valhalla.

Max Homa (+3500)

Three of Homa’s six PGA Tour wins have come on long, upper-echelon courses (Quail Hollow, Riviera and Torrey Pines). And, thanks to a tie for 10th at last year’s British Open and a tie for third at this year’s Masters, he finally has shaken his reputation as a guy who never shows up at majors. Homa trailed just two players in strokes gained: approach on his way to a tie for eighth last weekend at the Wells Fargo, one of three top-eight performances over his past six tournaments.

Sepp Straka (+8000)

Straka isn’t the longest off the tee, but he’s one of the most accurate, which should serve him well if the rough is an issue at Valhalla. The Austrian with the Southern accent (he moved to Georgia at 14) has quietly been putting together a solid season, with top-16 finishes in five of his past six tournaments, and he’s becoming quite the big-game hunter in majors: He tied for seventh at last year’s PGA, tied for second at last year’s British Open and tied for 16th at this year’s Masters.

Taylor Pendrith (+18000)

Pendrith, who ranks ninth on the PGA Tour in driving distance, has had a weird year. He scored his first PGA Tour win at the Byron Nelson a few weeks ago — on a TPC Craig Ranch course that matches Valhalla in length — and has four other top-11 finishes, two of them at elite-field events (the Farmers Insurance Open in January and the Wells Fargo). But he also missed five of six cuts in one stretch, his hopes doomed by inaccuracy off the tee and grim approach play. If the Canadian can show consistency, he could be worth a look down the odds board, or as a top-10 or top-20 play. Pendrith was never really in contention at the Wells Fargo — it was a two-man race between McIlroy and Schauffele — but he finished a respectable 10th, and there’s no reason for his odds this week to be the same neighborhood as those of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who probably have no shot.

As of Wednesday morning, here were the odds to win the PGA Championship of the leading contenders, according to DraftKings Sportsbook:

  • Scottie Scheffler: +400
  • Rory McIlroy: +750
  • Xander Schauffele: +1400
  • Jon Rahm: +1600
  • Brooks Koepka: +1600
  • Ludvig Aberg: +2200
  • Bryson DeChambeau: +2800
  • Collin Morikawa: +3000
  • Max Homa: +3500
  • Joaquín Niemann: +3500
  • Wyndham Clark: +4000
  • Viktor Hovland: +4000
  • Patrick Cantlay: +4000
  • Cameron Smith: +4500
