Koronadal Travel Guide

Koronadal is a city in the Philippines that is sometimes referred to by its indigenous name, Marbel. It is a rapidly growing city known more for its modern shopping malls and athletic complex than outright tourist attractions.

The greater province, South Cotabato, has a few well-known outdoor attractions, but the city of Koronadal is much more metropolitan and doesn’t have much to offer tourists. The city hosts a range of conferences (mostly domestic) throughout the year.

Koronadal hosts a vibrant mix of cultures, so the most popular time for tourists to visit is during major celebrations like the Hinugyaw Festival. The major ethnic tribes that live in this part of the country are the B’laan and Magunidanao. These tribes traditionally practice Islam, with Christianity more widespread within the city limits.

Travel to Koronadal - getting there

The nearest airport is in General Santos, which can be reached by bus in 1 hour. In General Santos there are regular flights to Manila International Airport (1 hour, 55 minutes). General Santos is the regional transport hub and there are two means of getting to Koronadal from here. Ferries depart from the seaport while buses make use of the provincial terminal.

What to do : enjoy a seasonal festival.

Best time to go : when the weather is coolest, generally late November through early February.

How long? A day or two is more than enough time.

Tidbit : despite Koronadal’s rapid urban development, the region’s biggest industry is still agriculture.

Koronadal attractions

El Gawel Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary : this natural area is part of a new initiative to attract tourists to Koronadal.

Cadidang Cave : this cave is largely unexplored and can be visited by tourists.

Siok Waterfalls : water drops 70 feet over the course of these cascades, creating pools that are popular for swimming.

Hinugyaw Festival : this colorful festival blends Christian and indigenous traditions into a single merrymaking (or ‘hinugyaw’) event.

Tinalak Festival : a few festivities are held here in July to celebrate the birthday of South Cotabato Province.

Marbeleño Mardi Gras : costumes, street parades and plenty of dancing mark this October event.

A Great Adventure Awaits You at Koronadal, South Cotabato

A Great Adventure Awaits You at Koronadal, South Cotabato

Dubbed as the “ Crown City of the South ,” Koronadal is a city whose center teems with everything you want in a metropolis – restaurants, malls and transportation (tricycles, of course). As you move towards the outskirts of the city, you’ll find wide acres of farmland, as well as rainforested mountain ranges.

Given that it’s the capital of the province of South Cotabato, as well as the regional center, the city of Koronadal is home to many modern amenities. Should you want to savor Philippine cuisine , why not dine at the Sabalai Bistro. Or, if you’re looking for a place with an urban ambiance, Cinco Ninas offers just what you want. If deserts are your thing – Filipino at that – Apareha’s can sate your curiosity. Plus, if you’re looking for cow done many ways – fried, boiled or steamed – then Manny’s Balbacua and Bulalo is the place for you.

But other than city amenities, Koronadal also features lovely natural attractions. As you look around, you’re bound to find lots of hills and mountains that you just can’t wait to explore. That said, here are some of the best natural attractions in Koronadal:

Suppon Falls

Located in Barangay San Jose, this falls is a 20 feet cascading beauty. Of course, to see such a pretty thing would need some hard work on your part. Getting to the falls requires about an hour’s worth of hiking from the base of the mountain just to reach the falls.

Siok Waterfall

Siok Falls Image source: www.southcotabatonews.com

This is also called Siok Falls. Located in Barangay Mabini and is taller than Suppon by about 20 feet. This one measures 40 feet and takes double the effort to reach. If it took an hour to reach Suppon, this one takes around two hours of effort on your part. Then again, all hard work is worth it once you get here and dive into the cold water.

Cabillon Falls

Situated in Barangay Cacub, this waterfalls just exudes serenity.

Cadidang Cave

This cave is found in Barangay San Jose. Here, you can see icicle-like stone pendants hanging above. Rising from its floor are columns and cones of stalagmites as well. There are three connected chambers in the cave and you are taken to these places through slender, dark tunnels.

Paraiso Verde Resort

Paraiso Verde Resort & Water Park Image source: gandaeversomuch.com

Well, Paraiso Verde Resort the biggest water park in Mindanao. There are four main attractions, which are the Moby Wave Pool, the Adventura River Rapids, Freestyle Swim Pool and the Wiggles Kiddie Pool. The venue is a modern one and is truly a world-class facility and the first of its kind in the Southern Philippines.

It’s a truly great escape to beat the heat when you’re in the country.

The Farm at Carpenter Hill

This is a garden resort and hotel located in Barangay Carpenter Hill. Amenities here include accommodation, events venues, butterfly garden, plant nursery and a children’s playground.

MATANAO, Davao del Sur (PIA) -- All roads leading to the caves in Matanao, in the province of Davao del Sur, are well-paved and cemented.

This was the guarantee made by Matanao Information and Tourism Officer Clover Jane Chua-Sabornido in an interview by the PIA XI press conference

She said the caves in Barangays Colonsabak and Asbang are the main attractions of Matanao town that entice more domestic tourists.

tourist attractions in koronadal city

“We now have night tourists, but they are mainly domestic tourists who prefer to see the sun in the first hour of the morning,” Sabornido said.

She said the people pay homage to nature by way of celebrating the “Lungib Festival,” a feast of Matanao’s natural resources like the caves, waterfalls, mountain views, and the local culture.

Sabornido said that the original name of the feast was Cave Festival two years ago. Then they rebranded it as “Lungib,” which means caves, celebrated by 33 other barangays in Matanao and supported by the Sangguniang Kabataan, local leaders, and stakeholders.

“The festivities started with street dancing by high school students of the Department of Education and Cave Forum in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), where the discussion revolved around how to preserve the cave resources, the Cave Act and the Wildlife Act, basic caving and the do’s and don'ts, and the spelunking and caving on the third day,” she said.

Sabornido said that aside from the caves, they also take pride in their mountain views and waterfalls, the view of Mt. Apo and all that can be seen from the peak of Barangay Asbang, the Divine Mercy Prayer mountain, farm tourism, the extreme sports complex, a brainchild of Mayor Vince Fernandez of Matanao, and the water tubing activities in Barangay Dungan Pekong.

She said that the distance between Barangay Colonsabak and Barangay Sabang is only five kilometers.

Sabornido said that Matanao is accessible via tricycle from Kilometer 71, at the crossroad of the Davao City-Cotabato City Highway, for P50  per passenger.

She said an electronic jeepney from Digos City to Matanao costs P80 per passenger.

tourist attractions in koronadal city

Sabornido said the people can stay overnight at the houses of the indigenous peoples, who offer their houses for a meager fee.

She said Matanao recorded 100,000 tourists this quarter, which shows that the place is now popular even with local tourists.

Sabornido said they have tinkered with their Facebook page to have more reach, and partnered with the Department of Tourism on Cave Exploration, on the Davao Adventure Challenge, which will be launched this year in Cagayan de Oro City.

She said four houses already offered homestays. (RVC/RGA/JSGD/PIA-Davao del Sur)
