No matter how often I cover the problems that come with collision damage under car rental insurance, consumers continue to share their frustrations. A reader recently emailed me:

“I’m interested in finding a complete bumper-to-bumper, ‘drop off the keys at the counter’ car rental coverage when I travel. I recently thought I had complete coverage though a credit card, but when my car suffered a small dent, the car rental company flat-out refused to document that it actually lost income from having the car rental in the shop (which took three weeks to repair a small dent). I was left with responsibility.”

This experience is uncommon, but not unique. Car rental companies desperately want you to buy their collision damage waiver, or CDW (sometimes also known as loss damage waiver, or LDW), and will go to great lengths to make you pay for even the smallest damages if you don’t. Here’s what you need to know before you shell out for car rental insurance on your next vacation.

Car Rental Insurance: What You Need to Know

Person signing car insurance paperwork on a clipboard

The One Way to ‘Drop the Keys and Forget It’

When you buy a CDW, the rental company surrenders its rights to charge you for damage to a car rental—with a few exceptions, such as tire damage or gross negligence. (CDW terms and conditions vary by car rental company, so you’ll want to read them carefully before committing.) But otherwise, no matter how banged up the car could be, you’re off the hook: Just turn it in and be on your way. No other approach—your own insurance, your credit card, or a third-party policy—is as comprehensive or convenient. If you want that full flexibility and peace of mind, pay for CDW.

CDW Insurance Is Ridiculously Overpriced

Typically, a CDW starts at around $30 per day and can go higher. The actuarial cost to the rental company—the amount it would allocate toward a damage pool based on risk experience—is probably just a few dollars a day; the rest is theirs to keep. No wonder the agents push it so hard: It’s clearly a lot more profitable than the car rental alone.

The 16 Best Car Rental Booking Sites

You’ll Pay Up Front for All Damage

You can cover your major damage responsibility by relying on your own insurance, a credit card with insurance, or a third-party policy. But in all of those cases you have to pay a damage claim up front, then recover as much as you can (all of it, you hope) by filing a claim afterward. That means signing a credit card bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars when you return the damaged car, and not knowing if you’ll get that money back.

That’s why some rental companies won’t accept rentals via debit card, or a credit card with a small limit. If you can pay the initial rental fee with a debit card, you may still need to provide a credit card to cover a possible damage claim, which would be filed before you can leave the return counter.

‘Damage’ Is More than Fixing a Dent

If you don’t buy CDW, rental companies can charge for more than just fixing the damage. They may also charge for:

  • “Loss of use,” meaning the potential revenue lost while the car is out of service being fixed, even if the company had lots of other cars available. And they generally figure that daily loss at the full retail rate.
  • Towing charges, if you are unable to drive the car back to the return station.
  • “Diminished value,” or the potential loss of the car’s resale value (because of your damage) when the rental company disposes of it, usually within two years.
  • Administrative fees associated with the claims process.

Most non-CDW car rental insurance will cover those extras. But, in some cases, coverage depends on cooperation from the rental company—and it may not be forthcoming, as our reader’s above wasn’t.

5 Vacation Rental Scams to Watch Out For

You Need General Liability Protection

You should never get behind the wheel of a car—or lawnmower, for that matter—without liability protection. But you don’t buy that from a car rental company: It usually comes with household, homeowner, or tenant insurance, and it covers far more than a car rental. And if your net worth is in six figures, you probably need an “umbrella” liability policy that covers a million dollars or more.

Car rental companies in most countries are required by law to include liability insurance. In the U.S., required coverage can be ludicrously small (usually only the minimum required by the state)—it’s usually much better in Europe. If you don’t have substantial liability insurance, you might consider buying the rental company’s offering. Still, your best bet is to make sure you’re covered 24/7 with your own insurance so you can forget about the rental company’s overpriced insurance.

Alternatives to Rental Company Collision Damage Waivers

Close up of man's hand holding a car key

Alternative #1: Pay with Your Existing Car Insurance

In many cases, if your regular auto insurance covers collision damage to your insured car, it also covers damage to a short-term rental. But this coverage is generally limited to driving in the U.S. and maybe Canada, and won’t cover car rentals in Mexico, Europe, or anywhere else. So, before you plan on using your own insurance, check its coverage. If it does cover rentals, you can place a claim on it. Still, you must typically pay your policy’s deductible, and any claims may cause your rates to go up.

Alternative #2: Use Credit Card Benefits

These days, most credit cards provide “free” collision coverage for car rentals, provided you use the card to secure the rental. A sample credit card benefits statement describes coverage as:

“Physical damage and/or theft of the covered rental vehicle. Valid loss-of-use charges assessed by the rental company while the damaged vehicle is being repaired and is not available for use, as substantiated in the company’s fleet utilization log. Reasonable and customary towing charges related to a covered loss to take the vehicle to the nearest qualified repair facility.”

Note that this typical Visa card’s benefits do not cover diminished value or administrative costs. A few premium credit cards offer primary collision coverage, meaning the card takes full responsibility for the payment. But coverage on most cards is secondary, meaning the card picks up only what you can’t first recover from your own insurance. And you still have to pay the rental company up front, then file for reimbursement from your card issuer.

Another gotcha in the above fine print: This card (and many others) pays for loss of use only if verified by the rental company’s log. Unfortunately, some rental companies don’t cooperate with credit card issuers in providing this type of documentation in a timely manner.

The Ultimate Guide to Travel Insurance: Everything You Need to Know

Alternative #3: Third-Party Car Rental Insurance

If you rent a car through one of the big online travel agencies (OTA) such as Expedia or Priceline , the agency normally offers you the option to buy collision coverage for around $10 a day. That coverage is provided by a third-party insurance company such as Allianz . The cost is a lot less than the rental company’s CDW, but, as with credit card coverage, if you damage the car, you have to pay up front and claim later.

Typical third-party collision coverage includes about the same contingencies as credit card coverage, but because it’s grouped with the booking you won’t have to make any other claims. You can also buy collision coverage independently: Bonzah , for example, sells coverage at around $10-$20 per day.

The Uncertainty Principle

Row of cars on car rental lot

The takeaway from all this: No alternative source of collision damage coverage—your auto insurance, your credit card, or a third party—completely isolates you from risk. Lots of travelers successfully rely on lower-cost alternatives to CDW without encountering any problems, sure. Occasionally, however, your own insurance, credit card, or third-party policy may not cover an unusual charge a rental company might impose.

If you’re unwilling to accept any risk at all, you might want to buy that overpriced CDW. For most travelers and circumstances, credit card or third-party coverage is sufficient, and primary coverage is a lot better than secondary.

Insurance for Rental Car Damage: Where to Get it and Things to Know

man inspecting damage to his rental car

What happens if you get into an accident with your rental car while on your trip?

We’ll answer that question in just a moment, but first, let’s do one of those camera tricks you see on commercials and rewind from the accident to the moment where you had to choose whether to buy a protection plan that provides coverage for damage to your rental car .

How to Get Damage Insurance Coverage for a Rental Car

So, you’re at the rental car counter, you’re presented with the loss-damage waiver form, and your pen hovers above the form before making a decision.

At this point, you’re thinking of your options, which are:

1. Accept the insurance from the rental car company

The knee-jerk reaction is to think that the insurance from the rental car agency is a rip-off, but it will likely get the job done -- protecting your wallet from those magic dents and scratches that always seem to appear between the time you pick up the car and the time you drive it out of the parking lot.

2. Buy a standalone rental car policy from a company

As more people rely on services like ZipCar for their auto-transportation needs, standalone rental car coverage has become more common. For trips where you don’t have a lot of prepaid travel expenses, this coverage can be a good choice.

3. Rely on your standard auto-insurance policy to cover you

If you're hoping a rental car accident won't impact your regular auto-insurance rates, anything other than your standard car insurance is a good choice.

4. Hope that your credit card has rental car coverage

Many travel credit cards include some level of rental car protection, but only if you used that card to pay for the car. And, the devil’s in the details -- be sure to read the fine print.

5. Remember that you got the Rental Car Damage coverage with your travel insurance plan *

Finally, there’s Rental Car Damage coverage through a travel insurance plan . This coverage is great if you have a lot of prepaid expenses – like airfares, hotels, and excursions – especially if you’re buying travel insurance anyway.

Rental Car Damage coverage can reimburse you up to $25,000 if your rental car is damaged through collision, theft, vandalism, natural disasters or any other cause beyond your control while you’re on your trip. The coverage is available as an extra-cost add-on with Generali's  Standard  ,  Preferred  plans and included with the  Premium plan .

Understand Your Rental Car Damage Insurance Coverage

With any rental car damage insurance, it’s important to see exactly what’s covered and at what level. It’s also helpful to be able to see what the policy covers far in advance – as in, not at the rental car counter. If you can get something from the rental car company 10 days or so in advance, great. If not, you may want to consider alternatives, like travel protection .

Finally, note that even though the car rental company may tell you that you have to buy their insurance, that’s not true. You don’t need their insurance to rent a car. However, a car rental company can refuse to rent a car to you if you don’t buy their insurance or supply adequate proof of insurance coverage.

Does All Travel Insurance Include Rental Car Damage Coverage?

Keep in mind not all travel insurance has rental car damage coverage. Some companies may include this as an optional add-on or include it with other plans.  Generali Global Assistance offers travel protection plans with both options.

Does My Personal Car Insurance Cover Rental Cars?

Your personal car insurance might cover rental cars. Remember that it may only be for personal use, not for business purposes. You may need to purchase separate insurance when using a rental car for business. Also, any claims on your personal car insurance might increase your premiums for that insurance.

What Is Covered Under Travel Protection for Rental Car Damage?

Most travel protection plans that include rental car damage coverage may cover damage to the rental car because of collision, theft, vandalism, natural disasters, and more.

Generali Global Assistance’s plans specifically say their Rental Car Damage Coverage is good for “collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail, flood or any cause not in your control, or the car is stolen while in your possession and not recovered.”

And, not only are you insured, but so is your traveling companion, provided you   are both a licensed drivers, and are listed on the rental agreement. Also, in this case, Generali’s Rental Car Damage coverage is primary to other forms of insurance, so it will pay before any other insurance coverage you have.

There are also vehicles that cannot be covered by our plans. These include rentals of trucks, campers, trailers, motor bikes, motorcycles, off-road, all-terrain, or recreational vehicles, vehicles that are older than 20 years, vehicles that have not been manufactured in the past 10 years, vehicles that are rented for commercial purposes, and vehicles that have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of more than $75,000.

What Happens if Your Rental Car Gets Damaged?

Now, let’s return to that scenario we presented at the outset – you know, where you’re debating whether to buy a plan with rental car damage insurance coverage. Let’s say you decided to go with the Rental Car Damage coverage offered with the Generali Global Assistance plans, and you got into an accident, because... of course.

First, you’ll need to do the basics that you’d do with any car accident, like:

  • Calling 911 or the equivalent;
  • Filing a report with the police;
  • Exchanging insurance information
  • Calling for a tow truck, if you need one;
  • Taking all your stuff out of the rental car; and
  • Taking pictures of everything. It literally costs nothing to snap several dozen pictures of everything from insurance information to car damage to the tow truck’s license plate.

At that point you should report the incident to your rental car company and then submit a claim to Generali to seek reimbursement for either the cost of repairs and rental charges imposed by the rental company while the car’s being repaired, or the car’s actual cash value, whichever is less.

Now that you know all the ways you can get rental car damage protection, be sure to consider travel protection for your next trip with a car rental.

Insuring a Rental Car in Mexico

Getting rental car insurance in Mexico may be a bit hard. Don't worry. We're here to help you get prepared.

Mexican Car Insurance Through the Rental Company

If you rent a car in Mexico, start by asking the rental agency for insurance. In most cases, you can get car insurance directly through them. Since most US auto insurers only insure rentals with US license plates, getting coverage through the Mexican rental agency is usually the only option.

Renting a vehicle in the US and driving it into Mexico is a different story. Not all rental companies allow drivers to take their cars into Mexico. You should check with the rental location first. Some rental companies only allow travel to Mexico from certain areas. You may also be charged an additional fee and or may be required to purchase insurance through them.

Mexican Car Insurance Through Your Credit Card Company

Did you know that Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover®, and other card companies provide rental car coverage?

Before you book your rental car, call the number on the back of your credit card. If you book the rental with that card, your card company might offer insurance coverage.

Some companies have additional requirements or don't provide liability insurance, so confirm the details with your card company.

The most important thing to understand about Capital One’s car rental insurance is what it covers. It covers only the following types of losses:

Damage to a rental car caused by a collision.

Loss of a rental car due to theft.

While your card’s insurance coverage will reimburse you for damage to your rental car, an accident can also cause damage to another driver’s vehicle or result in bodily injury.

If you injure someone (including yourself) in an accident or if you damage someone else’s vehicle, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card car rental insurance won’t cover these losses. Here are some items that are not covered by Capital One’s rental car insurance .

Personal liability.

Loss or theft of personal belongings.

Bodily injuries of any kind to anyone.

Damage to anything other than the rental vehicle.

Wear and tear or mechanical breakdowns.

Most likely, you’ll want travel insurance or personal auto insurance to shield yourself from liability, in case you are involved in an accident that damages someone else’s car or causes an injury.

Finally, Capital One car rental insurance covers rental periods of only 15 or fewer consecutive days within your country of residence. Rentals outside your country of residence are covered up to 31 consecutive days.

Certain vehicles

Capital One car rental insurance is meant to cover rentals of non-luxury passenger vehicles. The policy will pay only for the actual cash value of cars with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of up to $75,000 when new, so extremely expensive luxury cars won’t be covered.

If you’re renting a Toyota Corolla, you’re going to be covered. If you want to drive an Aston Martin, you’ll need to find other insurance. Here are some of the types of automobiles that are excluded:

Expensive automobiles with an MSRP of over $75,000 when new.

Antique vehicles that are over 20 years old or have not been manufactured for 10 years.

Vans, other than those designed for small-group transportation and seat up to nine people.

Trucks and vehicles with an open cargo bed.

Car Insurance For Foreign Visitors: What You Need To Know

Just like U.S. citizens and residents, foreign visitors must have car insurance to legally operate a vehicle on U.S. roadways. How much coverage a foreign visitor needs depends on how long they plan to stay in the country.

smiling businessman driving car

Car Insurance For Short-Term Foreign Visitors

Even if you're not a resident of the United States or you have a foreign driver's license, you're required by law to have car insurance if you want to own or drive a vehicle in the U.S. If you're a short-term visitor who's renting a car, you can usually purchase insurance from the rental agency.

When you purchase insurance from a car rental company, they'll ensure that you have enough coverage to meet the minimum requirements of whatever state you're driving in. According to CarInsurance.com , it is the rental agency's legal responsibility to make sure that foreign visitors have enough insurance to meet those requirements.

On the other hand, if a foreign visitor is driving their own car instead of renting, it's up to the driver to make sure that they have enough insurance. While most foreign visitors need a U.S.-based policy, if you're visiting from Canada, your Canadian policy will usually cover you if you're driving your own vehicle in the U.S.

According to ValuePenguin, you can expect to pay between $8 and $30 a day for rental car insurance , depending on the level of coverage you purchase. Whether you stick with minimum coverage or buy extra protection depends on what gives you the most peace of mind and how much money you're comfortable spending.

Car Insurance For Long-Term Foreign Visitors

CarInsurance.com notes that if you are a foreign visitor who intends to buy or lease a vehicle in the United States, you'll need to purchase an insurance policy. If you transport a vehicle from your home country and want to register it, you also have to have insurance. Keep in mind that the process for a foreign visitor to insure a car can be pretty complicated and costly.

In a survey of six of United States' leading insurance companies, ValuePenguin found that only two will insure a driver with a foreign license. Progressive and Farmers will insure your vehicle if you have a license from your home country, while Geico, State Farm, Esurance, and Allstate require you to have a driver's license issued in the U.S. if you want to buy coverage. It should be noted that all six of these companies sell insurance online. You might have better luck contacting another provider over the phone or in person.

If you want to purchase a policy from Progressive or Farmers, here's what you can expect to pay for a six-month policy with minimum coverage:

  • Progressive - $391 if you have a foreign driver's license
  • Progressive - $335 if you have a U.S. driver's license
  • Farmers - $673 if you have a foreign driver's license
  • Farmers - $673 if you have a U.S. driver's license

Unfortunately, if you're a foreign visitor, you'll usually end up paying more for car insurance. As CarInsurance.com points out, insurance companies typically use your driving history to calculate your rates and determine how much of a risk you are to insure. If you have a foreign driver's license, an insurance company can't access your driving record. They'll often charge you the highest rates possible, just to be on the safe side.

United States Car Insurance Requirements

Each state has its own requirements for both driver's licenses and car insurance coverage. For example, according to The Zebra , if you're visiting the Commonwealth of Virginia for more than six months, you have to apply for a U.S. driver's license. You should check with your host state's DMV to see what their requirements are for foreign visitors.

When it comes to car insurance, CarInsurance.com notes that if meet one state's minimum requirements, you're covered if you have to travel to another state temporarily. For example, if you're staying in New York City, you'll have to purchase enough insurance to meet the state of New York's minimum requirements. If you end up having to drive into New Jersey, the insurance you bought in New York will cover you.

Most states, as noted by The Zebra, require you to carry the following types of coverage:

  • Liability Coverage - If you're in an accident and found to be at fault, liability coverage will pay for repairs to the other driver's car and any medical care that the other driver needs.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage - If you're in an accident that's not your fault, uninsured motorist coverage will pay for your own medical care and car repairs if the other driver doesn't have insurance.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - PIP pays your medical bills whether you're at fault or the other driver is at fault.

You can consult your host state's DMV to see what type of coverage you need and how much coverage you need to meet that state's minimum. If you want even more protection, The Zebra recommends adding the following types of optional coverage to your insurance policy:

  • Collision - Collision coverage pays for repairs to your vehicle if you're in an accident that's your fault or a single-vehicle accident. You have to pay a deductible when filing a claim.
  • Comprehensive - Comprehensive coverage pays for repairs if your vehicle is damaged due to vandalism, natural disasters, or animal-related accidents. Like collision insurance, it requires you to pay a deductible.

Keep in mind that most insurance companies sell their policies for six months at a time. If you're staying in the U.S. for less than six months, CarInsurance.com recommends that you ask your insurance company about their cancelation policy. You may be required to pay a cancelation fee for canceling your policy before it expires. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to ask if you can get a short-term policy .

Get car insurance coverage for driving into Mexico

Planning a trip to Mexico? If you'll be driving there, you may want to take a look at your car insurance coverage and see if you need additional car insurance to travel to Mexico.

Your U.S. driver's license is valid in Mexico, according to the U.S. Department of State . But, your U.S. car insurance policy likely does not cover you, your vehicle or your rental car if you get into a wreck in Mexico.

That's where Mexico auto insurance for tourists can help.

What is Mexico tourist auto insurance?

Mexico tourist auto insurance is a car insurance policy, separate from your domestic policy, that helps cover U.S. and Canadian drivers in Mexico.

This type of policy helps pay for medical bills and car repairs if you're involved in a car accident while driving your vehicle with U.S. or Canadian plates in Mexico.

In Mexico, each party involved in a car accident must provide proof of valid insurance or financial responsibility. And, drivers in Mexico must have insurance from a Mexican company.

Allstate works with insurance companies in Mexico to help provide coverage for you and your vehicle.

What does Mexico tourist auto insurance cover?

  • Physical damage and theft This type of coverage may help pay to repair or replace your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in a collision, or by things like fire, hail or falling objects. Coverage limits are based on U.S. labor rates.
  • Bodily injury or property damage you cause to others (up to $1,000,000) If you're found at fault for a car accident, third party liability coverage helps pay for the other party's medical expenses or property damage.
  • Medical payments for you and your passengers If you or your passengers are injured in a wreck, this type of coverage may help pay for resulting hospital bills and services like X-rays or ambulance fees.
  • Legal assistance This coverage may help pay for your legal expenses if you're involved in a car accident in Mexico. Coverage may include legal representation and court costs.
  • Loan or lease payoff for a totaled new car This coverage helps pay off an underwater loan or lease on a car that's totaled in a covered claim. Gap coverage helps pay the difference between your car's depreciated value and what you still owe.
  • Roadside assistance If your car breaks down, roadside assistance helps pay for services such as towing, changing a tire or jump-starting a battery.
  • Medical evacuation If you're injured in a car accident, this coverage may help pay for expenses associated with emergency transportation to a hospital or treatment facility.

It's important to remember that each coverage has a limit , the maximum amount your insurer will pay for a covered claim. And some coverages have a deductible , the amount you pay out of pocket toward a covered claim. Coverages on the Mexico tourist auto insurance policy typically have low fixed deductibles.

Is my rental vehicle covered when I travel to Mexico?

Yes, provided you rented the vehicle in the U.S. and then drove it into Mexico. The following are typically not covered:

  • Rental cars when rented in Mexico
  • Vehicles with Mexico license plates (must have U.S. or Canada plates)
  • Commercial vehicles

How does Mexico car insurance for tourists work?

Whether your trip lasts for a couple days or a couple months, you can tailor your policy to the length of your stay, up to a year. You'll pay your premium at the time you purchase coverage – separate from the regular premium you pay on your domestic car insurance policy. Coverage usually begins on the date selected for the policy to start and can start immediately.

To get coverage on your Mexico policy, you must have similar, corresponding coverage on your domestic car insurance policy. For example, you must have collision coverage and comprehensive coverage on your U.S. policy if you want to buy physical damage coverage on your Mexico policy.

Am I eligible for a policy?

You may be eligible to buy Mexico tourist auto insurance if:

  • You're over age 21 (additional service fee applies for younger drivers)
  • You have a valid U.S. or Canada driver's license

Mexico tourist auto insurance costs will vary based on length of stay, and potentially other factors that an Allstate agent can walk you through. Get a quote for more information on whether Mexico tourist auto insurance should be a part of your travel plans.

RV Rental Insurance: Why You Need it And What It Covers | Money

R enting a recreational vehicle remains popular, not least due to the trends to higher hotel costs and lower gas prices compared with the pandemic levels for both expenses. (Gas prices really count for RVs, since they can travel as little as 4 miles on a gallon of gas, according to rental site RVShare.)

But before you get the keys to one of these hotel-rooms-on-wheels, be aware that RV rental insurance can be more complicated – and a lot pricier – to get than coverage for a rental car. Insurance can add upwards of $20 per day to your RV rental costs if you find you aren’t covered by your car insurance at home. And some strategies to eliminate or reduce the cost of insurance for rental cars don’t work for rental RVs; for example, it’s very unlikely you can rely on free coverage through using a particular credit card.

Here’s what you need to know about insuring your mobile home-away-from-home, including tips on finding and buying from the best RV insurance companies.

How does RV Rental Insurance Work?

Like rental car insurance, RV rental insurance offers temporary insurance coverage while driving an RV, camper van or travel trailer. You can buy RV insurance through your RV rental company if your regular auto insurance doesn’t already cover it, at least in part.

Some rental companies let you choose your level of coverage. They then bundle the cost of your insurance policy with your daily rental cost, so you don’t have to worry about making multiple payments.

Because RVs are generally larger and come with more hazards than standard cars, comprehensive coverage is typically more expensive for these vehicles than for a rental car —$70 per day or more, in some cases. Still, renting a small RV is one of the cheapest ways to take a road trip , so that extra insurance cost may be well worth it in the long run.

What does RV Rental Insurance Cover?

RV rental insurance policies cover physical damage to the vehicle while you’re renting it. They also cover your liability if you get into an accident while driving — meaning you won’t have to pay out of pocket for damage caused to another driver’s vehicle. Here’s an overview of what to expect from your RV insurance coverage:

Basic liability coverage is required whenever you rent a car or RV. Each state has its own minimum liability coverage requirements, so you’ll need at least the amount of coverage required in the state where you rent your RV.

The most basic coverage could leave you vulnerable

The most basic RV insurance, whether added by the RV agency or bought by you, generally provides only the state minimum levels of liability. Those levels likely offer less protection than your auto insurance policy and less than experts such as Consumer Reports and the Insurance Information Institute recommend.

An RV has more components that you could damage than a typical car. If you pay for comprehensive coverage on top of collision and liability protection, confirm that it will cover you for, say, fire and smoke damage should you start a fire with the RV’s stove.

To avoid being underinsured, consider increasing the liability you carry on the RV, despite the additional cost. Moving up from the state minimums to a more-than-ample $1,000,000 in liability costs an extra $14.95 a day with MBA Insurance. RVshare’s basic coverage is included in its rentals but only to state liability minimums of up to $100,000, according to the insurer’s website. Stepping up to the Preferred package triples the liability coverage to $300,000 (an amount many experts recommend) but requires you to pay an additional $21 and up a day in premiums.

Your home insurance should cover your personal possessions

As when renting a car, the items you bring from home to the RV should be protected by your homeowners or renters insurance . So you should be made whole if items are stolen or damaged while in the vehicle.

Some caveats do apply to such protection under your home insurance. For starters, the same deductible — likely of $500 or more — applies just as it would as for any other claim under your policy. That means you’ll get little or nothing back unless the value of what’s stolen is substantial.

Also, keep in mind that as with a claim for a loss at home, making a claim for personal items lost during an RV rental could risk an increase in your home insurance premium when you renew. Also, you might face limits on the coverage of valuable items such as jewelry under your home policy, unless you’ve added extra-cost policy “floaters” or “endorsements” for those items.

You can also protect yourself by buying a stand-alone travel insurance policy, which will cover theft of your belongings together with other perils, such as trip cancellation due to accident or illness. A policy typically costs 5% to 12% of the trip’s cost, according to travel expert Rick Steves. He recommends considering if you really require coverage and, if so, making sure that the policy you buy covers your most valuable possessions.

How to get RV Rental Insurance

There are a few different ways to get RV rental insurance: through the rental company, through your auto insurance company or through a third-party insurer. Here’s what’s involved with each.

1. Through the rental company

If you aren’t covered by your own car insurance, you can buy a policy for the RV as an add-on during the rental process. Chances are you will rent your RV from either a commercial rental business or through sharing sites such as RVshare or Outdoorsy. Either way, if you lack your own insurance, you will likely be offered it as part of the transaction. Rental platforms like RVshare can bundle your insurance cost with the daily cost of your rental.

2. Through your auto insurance provider

Before you buy an RV insurance policy from your rental company, check that you aren’t already covered by your auto insurance. Car renters benefit from their auto insurer extending much of the same coverage to the cars they rent as to the vehicles they own. While not all companies allow such coverage for an RV, it’s worth a call to your insurance company to find out.

Even companies that allow it may not do so in all states or for especially long rentals — say, of more than a month. Companies that generally extend coverage include USAA, according to a spokesperson, and State Farm, which allows coverage of an RV in most states under your auto insurance for up to 30 days with no advance notice required, according to public affairs senior specialist Anna Bryant.

However, you should confirm that your collision coverage will extend to the full value of the RV, which will very likely be more than the value of your own car. State Farm is among the insurers that offer this extension, says Bryant. “We understand there may be times we could end up settling a claim on a rented vehicle for more than we would for an owned vehicle.”

3. Through a third-party insurance provider

Some agencies and sharing sites simply arrange to send their renters over to an RV insurance company with whom they contract, such as MBA Insurance. There, the renter selects and pays for the level of coverage they want.

If you’re renting your RV from an individual RV owner on Outdoorsy or another site, they might offer temporary coverage and roadside assistance through a platform like Roamly, which covers the renter and owner together.

What to consider before choosing RV Rental Insurance

Before you start shopping for RV insurance, here are a few important considerations to keep in mind.

1. Insurance requirements

Ensure you’re clear on the insurance requirements in the state in which you’re renting the RV. These requirements might be different from those in your home state. The basic insurance plan offered by your RV rental company should meet local bodily injury liability and property damage liability requirements.

2. The value of the RV

If you get into an accident and your insurance coverage is lower than the cost of damages to your RV, you might be liable to pay the difference. That’s why it’s essential to know your vehicle’s value and insure yourself accordingly.

If you’re renting a pop-up trailer or fifth wheel, the value of your rental is probably lower than a Class C RV or camper van. Talk to your rental company about the value of your RV before committing to a plan.

3. Deductibles

Along with choosing your level of coverage, you must select your deductible. A higher deductible can sometimes mean a lower premium. However, you will have to pay that higher amount in case of an accident, so you shouldn’t consider a low deductible as an easy way to cut costs without giving through to how much you could actually afford to pay if the worst were to happen.

4. Additional coverage options

Your RV rental company or third-party insurer might offer additional coverage options, such as towing and labor, roadside assistance, glass replacement and more. Additional coverage isn’t required to rent your RV, but it might provide more peace of mind as you set out on your road trip.

What is the average cost of RV Rental Insurance?

On average, RV rental insurance costs between $15 and $30 per day, but it could be many times higher than that, depending on the extent of coverage and the value of your RV.

Factors that affect RV insurance cost

Determining the cost of your RV insurance policy are a number of considerations, including:

  • The type of RV (Class A, B or C, or a travel trailer). Class A motorhomes generally have the highest insurance premiums, while a policy on a tent trailer or fifth wheel is generally more affordable.
  • The age of the RV
  • State minimum liability requirements
  • Your driving record
  • Any add-on coverage you choose
  • The deductible you select

5 tips for finding the right RV Rental Insurance

You can’t skip the need for insurance if you’re renting an RV. But you can take some time to compare your options and ensure you’re getting the best coverage for your trip, experience and budget.

1. Check with your auto insurer first

Before you buy an insurance policy from your RV rental company, check with your auto insurer. Chances are high that you’re covered under your normal auto insurance, although the odds drop significantly if you’re renting a larger RV (that weighs more than 12,000 lbs) or for a period of 30 days or more. Your insurance company might also offer additional temporary coverage for the length of your trip.

2. Know the value of your RV

Even if you haven’t picked out the exact RV you want to rent, you should know your vehicle’s class and estimated value before you start comparing policies.

3. Consider your priorities

If you need to pay for coverage, are you prepared to pay a higher deductible for a lower premium? What add-on coverage, if any, do you want for your trip? Review your options and ensure you know the type of coverage you’re looking for before requesting a quote.

4. Get quotes from multiple providers

Whether you’re buying insurance from a rental company or a third-party provider, ask for an insurance quote before you buy your policy. Comparing quotes can help you get the best deal for the coverage you’re looking for.

5. Make sure your personal possessions are covered by your home insurance

Adequate coverage is about more than the RV itself. Check whether your homeowners or renters insurance provider will cover loss or damage to your personal items while you’re on the road.

What are the Best RV Rental Insurance Companies?

Plenty of companies that offer auto, home and travel insurance also offer RV rental insurance. Here’s a quick breakdown of three popular RV insurance providers.

Keep in mind that these are third-party providers. You should compare quotes from these companies with your rental company’s policy to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

  • Nationwide: Multiple discount options available, optional towing coverage, and the option to bundle with your auto or renters insurance
  • Progressive: Flexible deductibles, offers accident forgiveness, optional roof malfunction and pet injury coverage
  • Good Sam: RV-specific insurance agency that’s ideal for full-time RVers

What's RV insurance?

RV insurance is a lot like car insurance. Most states require a minimum amount of liability protection for motorhomes. For campers and travel trailers that you're pulling behind a car, liability extends from the auto policy of the towing vehicle.

If you're financing the RV, some lenders may require you to have comprehensive and collision coverage.

Whether your RV is your primary residence or just for recreational use, you can customize a policy to fit your needs.

Insurance for travel trailers

If you get comprehensive or collision coverage, you also get vacation liability coverage with travel trailer insurance. This helps protect you if your property’s damaged or if someone gets hurt in or around your trailer.

If your trailer is less than one year old, consider adding total loss protection. You can also add personal effects coverage to help protect the stuff you keep inside your travel trailer.

Ways to cover your motorhome

RV insurance may cover damages and injuries if you cause an accident. You may also be able to add coverage to pay medical, hotel, transportation and windshield repair costs.

Plus, get up to $99,000 in coverage for personal property in your motorhome. We cover luxurious Class A models, Class B campervans and Class C mini-motorhomes.

Insuring a pop-up camper

On top of comprehensive, collision and vacation liability coverage, you can also insure personal property inside your camper.

Add total loss replacement to campers less than one year old to replace your pop-up with the same model or later if it’s totaled.

Coverage for slide-on campers

We offer standard coverage options like comprehensive, collision and vacation liability. You can also get total loss replacement coverage and personal property insurance.

Because you load these types of RVs onto the bed of a truck, we also provide roadside assistance for your slide-on camper and the vehicle towing it.

Insurance for fifth-wheel trailers

You can get comprehensive, collision, roadside assistance and vacation liability coverage.

If your fifth wheel is less than six-years old, consider adding Roof Protection Plus®. This helps repair or replace your roof if it malfunctions from wear and tear, or it damages other parts of your fifth-wheel trailer.

RV insurance FAQ

Comprehensive coverage can help pay for water damage repairs resulting from weather-related incidents.

Recreational coverage can help protect your RV inside and out while on the road or at a campsite. You may want to consider it if you use your RV part time.

Full-timer's offers broader coverage to help protect those who live in their RV most of the year. It includes personal liability, medical payments and storage shed coverage. It also has loss assessment coverage, which can cover RV association fees to help pay for damages to shared areas.

Both options let you add vacation liability protection. This helps cover bodily injury and property damage costs while you're on vacation in your RV.

It may provide liability coverage for travel trailers and campers, as long as your vehicle is towing them.

Your auto insurance usually won't pay to repair or replace your RV.

It depends. If you're renting an RV, your cost and coverage will depend on the rental location and the type of RV.

It usually won't cover:

  • RVs with more than four wheels.
  • Drivers not listed on your policy.
  • Rentals longer than 30 days.
  • The full value of the RV.
  • Certain damage to the RV while it's parked.

Rent a Car in Moscow and other Russian Cities

Driving in Russia is very cheap: the petrol costs only about 60 ¢ per liter (€2 per gallon), the infrastructure is relatively good, and there's almost no road toll charges, so it's a great way to explore the country, especially if you're two or more.

In order to rent a car in Russia you just need your driving license (the plastic card one), a credit card, and your passport — no extra paperwork is needed (you don't even need a translation).

The insurance excess and security deposits are usually limited to about €200, and the daily rent is about €20 for a standard car and €30 for an SUV. We've partnered with the two biggest car rental aggregators, so you can use the form below to find the best car rental deals for Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities from major local and international providers, such as Hertz, Europcar, Avis and others.

Option #1: RentalCars.Com

Option #2: cartrawler.

Use this aggregator if you're renting a car for a longer period — two weeks and more — or if you're renting a car in Siberia.

Aldi has recalled a brand of tortilla wraps and a police investigation has been launched over fears they "may have been tampered with". Read this plus all the latest consumer and personal finance news below - and leave your thoughts in the comments box.

Inheritance tax receipts surged to a record high last year due to the government freezing the threshold at which you start to pay.

Official figures show the government received £7.5bn in inheritance tax (IHT) receipts in the financial year to the end of March - an increase of £400m on the same period the previous year.

Inheritance tax is a tax on the estate of someone who has died - including all property, possessions and money - and is only charged above the tax-free threshold of £325,000.

This threshold has been frozen by the chancellor until 2028.

So, with inflation boosting the value of people's estates, more and more people are being dragged above the threshold.

The standard inheritance tax rate is 40%.

Jonathan Halberda, specialist financial adviser at Wesleyan Financial Services, says more families "can expect to be caught in its net" as inflation pushes the value of estates up higher.

So what can be done to ensure families can keep their wealth?

Use the inheritance tax spouse exemption

Mr Halberda says if you leave your entire estate to your spouse or civil partner, there will be no inheritance tax to pay - even if its value exceeds £325,000.

Make a will

Doing this can mean you can distribute assets to take advantage of tax-free allowances.

"Assets in trusts are no longer in your name and therefore not considered when valuing your estate for inheritance tax," Mr Halberda says.

Gift giving

Gifting money or assets to loved ones before you die can avoid inheritance tax, but there are limits on how much you can give away and who to.

Gifts to charity

Leaving gifts to registered UK charities in your will is exempt from inheritance tax.

The FTSE 100 has hit another all-time high this morning following its record performance yesterday.

The index, of the 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange, soared to 8,071 points shortly after the opening. It marks a new "intraday" (during the day) record.

Later in the morning, the FTSE 100 eased back to 8,060 points, but was still up nearly 0.5% on yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

It comes after the index reported a record-high closing figure of 8,023 yesterday following a fall in the value of the pound. A lower pound makes it cheaper for foreign investors to invest in FTSE companies.

One of the reasons the pound is falling against the dollar is interest rates are expected to stay higher for longer in the US - meaning investors will get better returns on their US investments.

The strong performance this morning raises the prospect we could see another record close at the end of today's trading.

Danni Hewson, from investment platform AJ Bell, said the figures were "psychologically important for investors and for London markets as a whole" as the capital has been lagging behind its rivals, particularly the US, in recent years.

Among the firms doing very well this morning is JD Sports. The retailer's shares are up more than 7% in early trading following reports that it is set to buy US rival Hibbett for $1.08bn (£0.87bn).

On the currency markets, £1 will buy you $1.23 US or €1.15, similar to yesterday's five-month lows for the pound.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil is up almost 1% at nearly $88 (£71) this morning.

Aldi has recalled one of its products and a police investigation has been launched over fears it "may have been tampered with".

The supermarket has pulled its Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps White, citing safety fears over the "possible presence of metal".

The recall affects items with best before dates up to and including 29 April 2024, and with a pack size of 8x62g.

Anyone who has bought the item is being urged to bring it back to their nearest Aldi.

Notices have been posted at the stores telling customers not to eat the wraps.

Aldi said its products go through "rigorous safety and quality checks" and the item was being recalled as a "precautionary measure".

"As there is an active police investigation we are not able to comment any further on this matter at this time," it said.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also said Signature Flatbreads UK, which makes the wraps, is "working with the relevant food and police agencies to investigate the cause of the contamination".

No other items from the company are affected, it said.

Doubts have been raised over the government's ability to unveil tax cuts ahead of the next general election after official figures revealed borrowing was higher than expected in the past year.

The Treasury borrowed £120.7bn in the financial year ending March 2024 - down £7.6bn from the year before, according to provisional estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

However, the figure is £6.6bn more than forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) only a month ago.

Overall, government debt was around 98.3% of the UK's annual gross domestic product (GDP) in March - up 2.6 percentage points from the previous year and at levels not seen since the early 1960s.

Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist from Capital Economics, said: "If the chancellor was hoping March's figures would provide more scope for tax cuts at a fiscal event later this year, he will have been disappointed."

Basically, there might come a time when you can't make decisions for yourself - and in that event, having a lasting power of attorney (LPA) in place would allow someone who you trust to make decisions for you.

It's probably more important than a will in some cases because it affects decisions made about you while you're still living and breathing.

Here's what you need to know about LPAs...

What is a power of attorney?

It's a court-issued document that enables you to appoint someone (or a group of people) to make decisions on your behalf if you don't have the mental capacity to do so.

You're essentially giving them authority to manage your finances or make health and welfare decisions.

There are two types of LPA:

  • Property and financial affairs
  • Health and welfare

How do you apply for one?

There are two ways: do it yourself through the government website or have a solicitor draw one up.

To set one up you must:

  • Be over 18;
  • Have full mental capacity;
  • Pay a fee to register it, unless you are exempt.

How many people can you appoint?

There is no limit but solicitors generally advise no more than four.

Your attorney needs to be 18 or over and they could be a partner, relative, friend or even a professional, for example a solicitor.

If you do decide to appoint more than one, you need to decide how you want them to act - either "jointly", which means all the attorneys have to agree, or "severally", where they act on their own.

Why are LPAs important and what happens if you don't have one?

If you don't have an LPA in place and you lose mental capacity, your loved ones must apply to the court of protection for a deputyship order - this can take anywhere between eight and 12 months.

"Power of attorneys are as important, if not more important, than wills because your choice of attorney can influence you while you are alive, whereas a will is dealing with things after you've died," Caroline Foulger, partner and head of private client at TWN Solicitors, told the Money blog.

"If you lose capacity for whatever reason you're at a crisis point and decisions have to start being made potentially about selling your house, how to fund care etc.

"If you don't have an LPA in place and you have to go down the route of being under a court protection there is a timeframe where nobody can help you and things don't get done."

Penny Wright, a partner in the wills, probate and estate planning team at Gardener Leader, said many assumed that a spouse or a next of kin automatically had such powers but that was not the case.

"That's a common misconception," she said.

"To access your funds, to pay your bills, to arrange your care and make medical decisions on your behalf - it's not automatic."

'Treat it like house insurance'

Joanna Grewer, partner at Roythornes Solicitors, said a power of attorney was "like an insurance against mental incapacity".

She said: "We insure our houses so why shouldn't we insure the ability for someone to make decisions for us when we are not able to make them for ourselves?"

What are the costs?

If you were to make your LPAs using the government website you pay an £82 registration fee per LPA.

The price will be more if you chose to instruct a solicitor.

Ms Wright said a typical charge for LPAs at her firm would be £650 + VAT for one type or £950 + VAT for both types (health and welfare as well as property and financial).

Turkey has become the latest country to allow Britons who can work remotely to apply for a "digital nomad visa".

People who earn $36,000 (just over £29,000) a year and are between the ages of 21 and 55 will be able to apply for the visa.

Italy opened applications for a similar scheme in the last few weeks.

Unlike the year-long visas being offered by Italy, it is unknown how long the "digital nomad visa" will last for in Turkey.

According to the Go Turkiye website , applicants are required to provide the following:

  • A travel document/passport valid for at least six months as from the date of arrival in Turkey;
  • Diploma or certification of degree document showing that you are a university graduate;
  • Document showing the applicant works in the Digital Nomad field - jobs that use technology and communication tools to complete work remotely;
  • Biometric photo.

Potential home buyers have more choice this spring than they've had in the last five years, analysis shows.

The number of homes on the market has risen 20% compared with a year ago, property website Zoopla has revealed.

But it's what's going on in some coastal areas that was most striking when we looked through the data.

Supply has improved the most in Cornwall (+159%), North Kesteven, Lincolnshire (+155%) and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (+146%) - where prices have also increased significantly over the last five years.

In the South West, agents have two-and-a-half times more homes for sale compared with spring 2022.

Zoopla says this is due to house prices rising significantly in these areas, tempting homeowners to sell up.

But the return to the office, with less working from home, means many potential buyers are not as motivated to move to the coast for a lifestyle change.

This is having a knock-on effect on the time it takes to sell a property. It's taking 20 days longer to sell in Cornwall compared with spring 2022, and 23 days longer in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The national average is 16 days longer compared with spring 2022.

On the overall picture, Izabella Lubowicka, senior property researcher at Zoopla, said: "The current spring boost in supply on the market is giving potential buyers more choice than ever, but affordability continues to impact budgets. Sellers putting their homes on the market need to keep that in mind and ensure they are pricing their property realistically in order to achieve a sale."

Virgin Media is under pressure to urgently improve after being ranked the worst broadband firm for customer service.

The provider came bottom for customer service, quick and helpful responses, and technical support in the annual broadband customer satisfaction survey by Which? - initially released several weeks ago.

A number of customers also shared their experiences with Which? - including Michael Barraclough from Bradford.

The 62-year-old said he got in touch with Virgin Media after two weeks of broadband signal issues - but the ordeal went on for six weeks and took a total of 18 phone calls to resolve.

At the other end of the scale, Zen Internet took first place for overall customer service - with a satisfaction score of 84.

Utility Warehouse and Plusnet also performed well with satisfaction scores of 74 or 72 for overall customer service.

Which? has today called on Virgin Media to "make urgent improvements and demonstrate that it is making it easier for customers to get timely and effective solutions to their problems when they need help".

A Virgin Media spokesperson told the Money blog: "We are investing and making changes across our business to deliver tangible customer service improvements and ensure all customers receive the best possible service.

"For example, we're multi-skilling our teams and rolling out new IT platforms that make it easier for customers to get support and have issues resolved the first time they get in touch."

It said the Which? annual survey used a sample size of 0.01% of its customer base, and on average 95% of customer complaints were resolved during a customer's first initial call.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
