Applying for visa on arrival in Nepal may be all that stands between you and the mountains © My Good Images / Shutterstock

With world-class trekking, mountain biking and whitewater rafting, historic cities and abundant wildlife, it’s easy to understand why Nepal draws so many travelers from across the globe. Few countries in the world fit so many thrilling landscapes – from the towering Himalayas to forested foothills and steamy lowlands – into such a small space.

Deciding to visit Nepal is easy, but the logistics of getting into the country can be a bit more complicated. Here’s our handy guide to the visa requirements for Nepal, including information on tourist visas, how to extend your stay and applying to work or study in the country.

Most travelers can get a Nepali visa on arrival

Here's the good news – for most travelers, the entry requirements for Nepal are fairly simple and pain-free. Indian citizens do not need a tourist visa to visit the country, and most other tourists can get a 15-, 30- or 90-day visa on arrival. This includes visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and most other Western European countries.

When you land at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport , you need to fill in an arrival card and have your photo taken at one of the automatic registration machines – to save time, you can do this online in advance (this must be done less than 15 days before you arrive). If you leave it till you land in Kathmandu, expect the process to take over an hour, with lots of queuing.

Once the paperwork is filed, you must then pay a visa fee of US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days, or US$125 for 90 days at the payment counter. Children under the age of 10 do not need to pay for their tourist visas unless they are US citizens. Payment is accepted in a variety of major currencies but it’s advisable to bring small bills.  Finally, head to the immigration desk with your arrival form, payment receipt and passport, and enjoy Nepal!

Crossing into Nepal overland

You can also cross into Nepal overland via a series of border crossings in the Terai plains, including the busy crossing at Sunauli/Bhairawa, accessible by bus from Delhi and Varanasi in India. You can still get a visa on arrival if you enter Nepal by land, but it's best to bring some passport photos with you, and you'll need to pay the visa fee in cash in US dollars.

Getting a visa in advance will save time

Even if you're eligible for a visa on arrival, the queues for a tourist visa at Tribhuvan airport can move painfully slowly, particularly during the October–November peak season. To save time, you can get a tourist visa in advance from the Nepali embassy or consulate in your home country (or the nearest embassy in a neighboring state).

If you do obtain a visa before you travel, you must enter the country within six months of the visa being issued, though the 15-, 30- or 90-day period only starts when you actually arrive in Nepal. The web portal of the Government of Nepal has a full list of Nepali overseas missions.

Some travelers can get a free visa

Reflecting Nepal's friendly relations with neighboring states, Chinese citizens are eligible for a free tourist visa, while Indian travelers can enter Nepal without a tourist visa. Travelers from many South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries can get a free 30-day visa for their first visit to Nepal in a calendar year. This rule applies to citizens of Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but not to citizens of Afghanistan.

Other travelers must get a visa in advance

Citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Syria and Zimbabwe must obtain a visa from their local Nepali embassy or consulate before traveling. Refugees with travel documents from their host nation must do the same.

Travelers can pay extra for a multiple entry visa

While it's more common to detour from India to Nepal than the other way round, you can turn your single-entry Nepali visa into a multiple-entry visa for US$25 at the Central Immigration Office in Kathmandu or the smaller office in Pokhara . This is helpful if you plan to take a side trip from Nepal to Bhutan or Tibet .

If you are entering Nepal from India and plan to return to India, make sure you get a multiple-entry India visa – obtaining a new visa for India in Kathmandu is a painfully slow and complicated process.

You can extend your visa for up to 150 days

If you decide you need more of Nepal's mountains and monasteries, you can extend your visa at the Department of Immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara, up to a limit of 150 days in any calendar year (January to December). Extensions cost US$45 for the first 15 days, followed by US3 per day after that until you reach the 150-day limit.

Don’t overstay your visa – if you do you’ll be fined US$5 per day and you may have trouble visiting Nepal in future. Make sure you leave a gap of several days between the end of a trek and your international flight home in case there are delays getting back to Kathmandu from the trailhead.

Apply for work and study visas well in advance of travel

If you want to work or study in Nepal, you’ll need to apply for a special class of visa and fulfill a number of strict criteria. The process can be complicated, bureaucratic and time-consuming, as you have to provide recommendation letters, bank statements and other documents. Visit the Department of Immigration’s website for detailed information.

Top 5 airlines serving from Toronto to Nepal

I liked everything accept the delay try to improve in that area

The customer service was very poor. I didn’t get any accommodations for my cancelled flight. I was without any sleep for 36 hours.

Worst ever. No assistance and communication from Emirates crew. No visibility of when the flight is flying. Couldn’t understand if we can go to lounge to take rest. Emirates system at a certain point said flight is not operating and suggested to take the next flight and in few minutes it suddenly opened the gate for boarding. unsupportive and rude crew. Worst experience ever. Flight was delayed by 5 hours so need the compensation for that.

My Experience was ok. But the gentleman next to me vaped the whole flight and the attendants did nothing, whether they were aware, I’m not sure.

Not that good The crew in the plane were rim professional & almost lost in their work distribution

No entertainment u less you pay. Wish there were some free movies

They had superb boarding (started an hour before flight time). Timely pushback from them gate and an early arrival. Flight and service was very comfortable. I wanted to move my flight to an earlier one, only thing was there was no one at emirates in Heathrow to help. Had to call the call the center and pay to change. There were ample seats on the flight though

Check-in counter at the airport took more than an hour of standing in queue with online checkin. And after entering the gate the flight delayed more than 30 mins.

Great flight. Comfortable seats, courteous service, and excellent selection for entertainment.

Had the salad which tasted awfully spat it out but still got food poisoning 1 after running to toilet crew would not let me sit near toilets I was stuck in window seat

they give hard time at checking, they not allow computer bag or purse

Too many boarding protocols. Never experienced with other international flights.

No separate queue for business class/platinum passengers. I had to stay in the long queue to board. I requested breakfast before landing, but the crew didn't offer, except a coffee with milk. No tea with milk was available. Had asked for cookies, but didn't receive them. The crew in the business class was not good in terms of service..

Was required to print a boarding pass, which I'd prefer to avoid. Seat (economy x) was comfortable, service was excellent.

Polite and helpful crew. My son developed fever. Crew members came and gave him medication and also came and enquired about his health several times.

Boarding delayed, no communication. I left the lounge, and heard a final call, boarding started after a 30 minutes.

Okay not so good or great. The flight operated by Indigo is worst from boarding to luggage handling and food. Damaged one luggage and delayed another luggage. Still did not get it, since 2 days.

There was no phone charger, uncomfortable seats, unprofessional flight attendants, didn’t like food

professional crew god service good entertainment need choices for diabetic meal

In spite of placing requests for vegetarian food, I didn’t get it because they ran out of stock. According to crew, only fixed number of vegetarian orders will be carried. Typically, they should have checked and served those who had specifically requested. I was one of those to get the food last.

Excellent service and comfort from the moment you check in. Flight crew is hyper focused on making passengers comfortable and at ease. It’s like a flying hotel!

Nothing really was great as such. Seen other no name airlines perform better.

It was a nightmare. I booked business class ticket from Ediburgh to Beirut via Istanbul to attend a funeral. I had a wonderful experience flying to Istanbul from Edinburgh. Then I could not get a boarding pass issued to Beirut. It seems that although they booked me and I had a reservation number, I had no seat allocated and the flight was full. I was asked to go from one desk to another and made to wait for 2 hours. I missed my flight as I did not have a seat assigned and it was full. The only option was to put me on the next flight, 6 hours later, for a fee of over $400. They said that was the best they can do to 'help me' and to 'take it or leave it'. Well, I was not about to be bullied; I stood my ground. I booked and paid premium for the journey, which was confirmed. The eventually accepted to not charge me extra and i waited a total of over 8 hours in the airport with no compensation. On top of my grief with the risk of missing the funeral service, I had to put up with their indifference and condescending attitude. They spoke about me in Turkish thinking I would not understand (I hold a British passport) in front of me. When they eventually handed my passport and boarding pass back to me, I showed them I was born in Istanbul and that I understood everything and said a condescending 'thank you' back to them in Turkish. You should have seen their faces. I said that consumers have rights and it is a shame that Turkish Airlines does not have good customer service to at least acknowledge and apologize for errors committed by the airline. Blaming the me, the client, for such an error and placing unreasonable ultimatums, rudeness and dismissiveness to be rid of me, particularly when I was vulnerable and visibly grieving was really shocking... The airline taints the city of Istanbul and the people of Türkiye. Such a shame.

Was not able to check in online, so had to stand in line for 90 minutes to get a boarding pass, and I had no luggage to check. Why not let people check in in advance on line? Or at a kiosk at the airport?

There was a Turkish Airlines employee sitting in front of us, we noticed from her conversations we witnessed with the cabin crew and the fact that she boarded business class. She was sat in 16A. Firstly she was talking loudly the majority of the flight with two other men, one of which was leaning over the seat in front of her. This was disturbing as they were talking loudly and we were not able to sleep. The 12 hour long flight turned into a nightmare, even the noise cancellation didn’t work for their chatter. Secondly she requested extra meals from the crew for her male friends. We believe the meals came from business class. They also took their e-cigarettes out and were caught the cabin crew, but no further action was taken. Sitting in economy and seeing this is extremely disheartening. Next time I will book Emirites, I don’t think their staff would be allowed to behave like this.

seat didn't fold children noise in the air plain. no foot space

Flight canceled and then “uncanceled” after I booked are placement. I had to pay for both a Turkish Air doesn’t admit their mistake

I will avoid this airline as much as possible. Service was rude, and I don’t think the crew knew how to answer a CALL LIGHT. I pushed my call light on the ohare to Istanbul and the Istanbul to Thailand flight because I was very very thirsty. NO ONE CAME. I pushed it twice! NO ONE CAME! Why have a call light when no one will come? My experience was the WORSE AND I WILL NEVER EVER FLY WITH THIS AIRLINE AGAIN. The cabin crew needs to learn MANNERS AND BE RETRAINED on their jobs on how to be helpful and kind instead of being short with their customers and ANSWER CALL LIGHTS! I honestly wouldn’t be suprised this airline goes out of business.

My whole body was paining after such long flight. Seats are small. Leg space is too small. Food is good.

Sadly, the plane was extremely old and uncomfortable. The entertainment system broke down completely. We couldn't even charge our phones. The seats were also very uncomfortable, with a very slim seat cushion. It must be the result of having 9 seats where there used to be 8.

Internal air serrulation was poor, felt suffocated after a while. Food was horrible. Seats were not comfortable at all, no leg or arm stretch room at all, even though I am not a big person at all. Dhaka transit passengers' waiting area was also horrible, dirty and unfriendly service. Middle of the journey opening previously checked in baggage was extremely unpleasant experience. I never experienced anything like this before in my 30+ years airplane journey experience.

I like food, look for extra meals or foods please

Late Biman. I will never ever go with Biman again.

There was a lot of kindness on the part of the crew. There was a strong smell throughout the plane.

Their security process is excessive. We were checked when we got off our incoming plane, at the gate and up the stairs when boarding the plane. Come on.

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Air India needs to launch new planes. Seats are worn out, most of the plane's TV screens wasn't working, USB charging ports wasn't working as well so I can charge my phone & watch my download movies, Food was mediocre, the plane smells. How can Air India put through their customers with this bad experience? This complaint needs to get escalated to the upper management. How shameful is the upper management to improve this plane? The flight is going back & forth from NEW YORK & DELHI. Two of the big cities in the world and this is how your experience is for sitting in a plane for 12+ hrs? Get your planes fixed ASAP Air India (TATA Management do your job right).

Broken food table, broken entertainment system, broken remote. Cracks on seat plastics here and there.

The crew smile nicely when you board and exit, in between they are sullen and innattentive

The food was abysmal, entertainment system didn't work. seats were broken, toilets were unclean, I am going to write an official complaint because the experience was below average.

Departure gate flipped twice within 15 minutes. Made passengers to move from one gate to other. Delayed boarding and departure. This is inconvenient for elderly wheelchair passengers and people traveling with children.

Flight got delayed by 3 hours but no compensation or anything

The flight was fine. The cancellation of my flight and the proceeding service was ABSOLLUTELY AWFUL! When my connecting flight was cancelled, there was nobody there to help reschedule a flight, get a refund, find our luggage and above everything else, they kicked us out of the airport since we didnt have a valid ticket (since it was cancelled). here i am 8,000 miles from home, after being on a flight for 15 hours and face 6 hours of delays then finally cancelled and kicked out of the airport with noway to get a refund, find my luggage, get a new flight (except just by a new ticket). And oh, this is at midnight local time. AWFUL.

We chose this trip specifically as we are regular hill walkers and had always wanted to hike in the Everest region of Nepal, but had been put off by tales ...

In the autumn and spring tourist high seasons (late Sept to mid-Nov and late Feb to late March), flights to Kathmandu – Nepal’s only international airport – often fill up months ahead. Most people book tickets through to Kathmandu, but you can also make your own way to a major regional air hub such as Delhi, and arrange transport from there. Airfares depend on the time of year, but timings of the high, low and shoulder seasons are calculated differently by each airline, and may not always coincide with tourist seasons.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Nepal

13 days  / from 2200 USD

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Nepal

Set in the heart of the Himalayas, the landlocked South-Asian country of Nepal is home to a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From wild jungles to ancient civilisations, Nepal offers a combination of history, culture and nature; perfect for the most well-seasoned of travellers.

You can sometimes cut costs by going through a specialist flight agent such as STA Travel (statravel.com) or Trailfinders ( w trailfinders.com), but the best deals tend to be found online (compare prices on an aggregator like w momondo.com or w kayak.com). Round-the-World tickets are worth considering, but cheaper off-the-peg tickets don’t generally allow you to fly both into and out of Kathmandu. Figure on around £1500/US$2400 for a ticket that includes Nepal.

There are no direct flights from London, Ireland or indeed Europe as a whole to Kathmandu, so you’ll have to make at least one stop en route. Fares are seasonal, and airlines generally charge full whack (around £650–900) from late September to mid-November, late February to late March, and during the Christmas period. It’s often possible, however, to find discounted fares (around £550–600), especially on less convenient routes, and prices drop outside of these periods, when you may be able to get a flight for £450–500.

From London , Gulf Air ( w gulfair.com), Emirates ( w emirates.com) and Qatar Airways ( w qatarairways.com ) offer the most direct routings via the Middle East. Another good option is to fly on Jet Airways ( w jetairways.com), Kingfisher ( w flykingfisher.com) or Air India ( w www.airindia.com ) via Delhi. Travelling by other routes takes longer (often with two or more stopovers), but relatively inexpensive deals can often be found on carriers such as Sri Lankan Airlines ( w srilankan.com) and Biman Bangladesh ( w biman-airlines.com). Flights on Thai Airways ( w thaiairways.com ) and Singapore Airlines ( w singaporeair.com) aren’t really worth considering because you’ll have to double back from Bangkok or Singapore.

Travellers from Ireland will generally have to journey via London or another European city.

If you live on the east coast it’s quicker to fly to Nepal via Europe and then – typically – the Middle East or India (see below). From the west coast it’s easier to go via the Far East on a carrier like Singapore Airlines ( w singaporeair.com), Thai Airways ( thaiairways.com ) or Cathay Pacific ( w cathaypacific.com). Expect to spend 20–24 hours on planes if you travel via these routes.

Seasonal considerations may help determine which way you fly; note that these airline seasons don’t necessarily coincide with Nepal’s autumn and spring tourist seasons. Most airlines consider high season to be summer and the period around Christmas; low season is winter (excluding Christmas), while spring and autumn may be considered low or shoulder season, depending on your route. High-season prices from both the east and west coasts are around US$1500–2000.

From Canada , the cheapest flights tend to be from Toronto, flying eastwards, and cost around Can$1600–2000 in the high season.

Flying to Nepal from Australia or New Zealand invariably means travelling with Thai Airways ( thaiairways.com ) via Bangkok or Singapore Airlines ( w singaporeair.com) via Singapore, with a stopover en route. Fares to Delhi are about the same as to Kathmandu, so another possibility – although not the most economical – is to fly into India and fly or travel overland from there. A final option is to fly via Hong Kong.

Airfares depend on the time of year. Generally, low season runs from mid-January to late February, and from early October to the end of November; high season is from around mid-May to August, and early December to mid-January; shoulder season takes up the rest of the year. Low-season prices to Kathmandu via Singapore or Bangkok start at roughly Aus$1800 from Australia, and NZ$2400 from New Zealand, and can be several hundred dollars (in either currency) higher in peak season.

From South Africa , Thai Airways ( thaiairways.com ) and Singapore Airlines ( w singaporeair.com) both have regular flights from Johannesburg to Kathmandu, via Bangkok and Singapore, and various carriers travel via India. Expect to pay from around ZAR13,000.

Many travellers combine Nepal with a trip to India, even if they’re just making the connection with a flight to or from Delhi. There are numerous border crossings between the two countries, and overland routes can easily be planned to take in many of northern India’s most renowned sights. Travel agencies in India and Nepal offer bus package deals between the two countries, but these are generally overpriced and it is far better to organize things yourself.

Three border crossings see the vast majority of travellers: Sonauli/Belahiya, reachable from Delhi, Varanasi and most of North India (via Gorakhpur); Raxaul/Birgunj, accessible from Bodhgaya and Kolkata via Patna; and Kakarbhitta, serving Darjeeling and Kolkata via Siliguri. A fourth, Banbaasa/Mahendra Nagar, in the little-visited west of Nepal, is handy for the Uttar Pradesh hill stations and (relatively speaking) Delhi too. All these border crossings are described in the relevant sections of the Guide. Two other border points (near Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi) are also open to tourists, but they’re rarely used. Other crossings near Janakpur, Biratnagar and Ilam rarely admit foreigners.

Flying between Delhi and Kathmandu rewards you with Himalayan views and opens up a wider choice of international flights. Air India ( w airindia.in), Jet Airways ( w jetairways.com), JetLite ( w jetlite.com ), SpiceJet ( w spicejet.com), IndiGo ( w goindigo.in) and Nepal Airlines ( w nepalairlines.com.np) all serve this route.

Travel from Tibet is possible as long as you have the correct permit; entering Tibet from Nepal, however, is limited to group tours. It is also possible to fly to Kathmandu from Bhutan .

The classic Asia overland trip is just about alive and kicking, and several operators, including Dragoman (see below), run trips to Nepal.

If you’re flying into or out of Kathmandu via Delhi or the Gulf, it’s worth trying to book a daytime flight, as the views on clear days are astounding. Flying west from Kathmandu, many flights now take a particularly astonishing route, during which the western Himalayas scroll right past your window. Check in early to ensure a window seat on the best side: on the left on the way in (seats lettered A), and on the right on the way out.

Hikers make their way up mountain range in Annapurna

Sitting on the spine of the world, sandwiched between the superpowers of China and India, you’ll find humble Nepal.

We’re not meant to play favourites, but when you’ve been running Nepal tours for three decades, the country kind of gets under your skin. Picture a tiny Himalayan country where sherpas trudge the mountain paths and prayer flags crisscross the sky, their fluttering Buddhist mantras waving in the breeze. Follow our leaders up to Everest Base Camp, trek the rhododendron forests of the Annapurna, track rhinos through Chitwan National Park or stuff your face with momos in the warren-like streets of Kathmandu's Thamel. Whichever type of  Nepal trip  you choose, we promise you one thing: you’ve never been anywhere like this.

Best time to visit nepal.

Nepal's climate is primarily temperate, with some tropical and alpine regions. From June until August, the monsoon hits, making it too wet and humid for trekking.

The post-monsoon period from September to November is rice-harvesting season and is characterized by lush vegetation, clean air and excellent mountain views. Days are warm and sunny, although nights become increasingly cool. This is the start of the trekking season, which runs until May.

Winter (December to February) is dry and clear, with temperatures dropping below freezing at high altitudes, although in Kathmandu, it can still sometimes reach a pleasant 25ºC.

Spring (March to May) is warmer and is a particularly beautiful time to visit as the rhododendrons and the orchids are in flower.

Culture and customs

With more than 30 different ethnic groups and a wide range of religions and language dialects, Nepalese society is rich in diversity. With Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian influences, Nepalese food, clothing, customs and music vary, depending on what area you're travelling in and what ethnicity people belong to or identify with. Learn more about regional culture on Our 15 day Tamang Heritage & Langtang Valley Trek .

Hinduism is the dominant religion, followed by Buddhism. Standing alongside these religions, there are also small populations of people who follow Islam and Christianity. Simultaneously, animist beliefs and belief in spirits is common throughout Nepal, particularly within rural communities.

Like India, the caste system exists in Nepal, as does the custom of arranged marriage. As one of the least urbanized countries in the world, life differs greatly between the rural and city-dwelling populations, with rural people largely living a very simple, traditional life - slow-paced, village-based, in connection to their family and local community. Nepalese people are generally very friendly and welcoming of travellers. Experience Nepal from a new perspective on our culturally-centred 13 day Nepal Women's Expedition.

Eating and drinking

With Tibetan, Chinese and Indian influences, Nepalese food is flavoursome without being too spicy, filling without being rich and reasonably priced for travellers on a budget.

Things to try in Nepal

These fried or steamed dumplings are usually filled with meat or cheese. Comparable to Tibetan momos, kothey are flavoursome snacks that can usually be bought cheaply from street stalls or markets.

Popular with vegetarians and vegans, this lentil soup is usually served with rice and found almost everywhere in Nepal. A safe yet tasty choice for everyone.

This spiced meat curry will usually consist of chicken, buffalo or mutton, as beef hardly features on the menu in Nepal for religious reasons.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Nepal shares borders with  China  and  India  and is home to a wide range of landscapes and habitats. As much as 75% of Nepal's land is dominated by hills and mountain ranges, including the world's highest mountain, but there's so much more to this region than Everest.

A lot of the country is known as the Terai region, characterized by forests, plains, marshes and scrub and within these varied landscapes are the many impressive animal species that inhabit this region. Chitwan National Park is perhaps one of the best places in all of Asia to see its incredible wildlife. Home to a variety of common and protected species, you may be able to spot some exciting house names like the single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros, leopard and the Bengal Tiger.

Experience the beauty of wild Nepal on our 11 day Family Holiday with Teenagers .

History and government

Early history.

Nepal has been inhabited by people for more than 2,500 years, with evidence suggesting tribes of mountain-dwelling people moved to the area from China and other Central Asian regions. Due to a lack of archaeological evidence, little is known about the early periods of history in Nepal, with legend and folklore providing the backdrop to this kingdom of mystery. Ruled early on by the Kirati Dynasty, Nepal continued to be ruled by a succession of dynasties until the Malla Dynasty emerged in the 12th century. During this time, the kingdom expanded rapidly and widely before evolving into small communities with local rule. By the 15th century, many temples and palaces had been built in Nepal, some of which are still in existence either as functioning temples or UNESCO World Heritage sites. The kingdom of Nepal was unified by King Shah in 1768 and went on to sign commercial treaties with Britain in 1792 and 1816 after hostilities with the British East India Company. Visit a relic of Nepal's royal power on our One Week in Nepal Tour .

Recent history

Nepal held its first elections in 1959, but with the king dissolving parliament and banning political parties soon after, Nepal's monarchy retained power. After decades of pro-democracy movements, Nepal was finally declared a democratic republic in 2008, with Nepal's monarchy being removed from power after ruling for more than 240 years. Nepal celebrated its Year of Tourism in 2011, with arrivals increasing year upon year since 2006 due to increased infrastructure, expansion of air travel and the enduring popularity of the Himalayas and mighty Mount Everest. Learn about Nepal's climbing history at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara during a Nepal trekking tour.

Arguably, the most interesting shopping in Nepal can be found in Kathmandu - with its vibrant local artistic community populating the markets and laneway shops with colourful art and handicrafts.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring some items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events in Nepal

Phalgun festivals.

Kathmandu explodes into a whirlpool of colour, dance, music and rhythm with the annual Phalgun festivals - Losar, Shivaratri and Holi. Expect everything from public bathing ceremonies to people committing extreme feats of weight lifting with their body parts! With Tibetan rice wine flowing and an amazing array of festive food on offer - this is a great time to be in Kathmandu.

Indra Jatra

This eight-day festival held in Kathmandu features ceremonies, dancing and displays of spirituality, but none of these events compare to the spectacle of the third day when Kumari (the living goddess) tours the city streets aboard a chariot. Other popular gods also come out to play and parade, as masked dancers perform in Durbar Square in this exceptional display of local culture.

Mani Rimdu Festival

Offering a rare chance to observe the Sherpa culture of the Everest region, this festival held at Tengboche Monastery features days of meditation cycles, religious ceremonies, masked dances and parades. This holy time for Buddhists sees locals travel by foot to receive blessings en masse against a stunning Himalayan backdrop.

Nepal travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Nepal?

All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas are obtainable from embassies abroad, land borders (including borders with India & Tibet) and on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan Airport.

Getting a visa at the airport or land borders can sometimes take time due to long queues. There have been instances when travellers are asked to show proof of exit from the country, i.e. flight tickets. You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars (subject to change, cash only). Other currencies are also accepted, although rates may differ.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Nepal?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Nepal, it's considered polite to leave service workers in restaurants and cafes a 10% tip if a service charge hasn't already been included in the bill.

What is the internet access like in Nepal?

Travellers will be able to access the internet in large cities like Kathmandu. Smaller towns, isolated areas and rural villages may have limited to no access, so prepare to disconnect when leaving the city.

Can I use my cell phone while in Nepal?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in urban areas, but can be patchy and less reliable in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated on your phone before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in Nepal?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in Nepal. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they aren't usually provided.

What will it cost for a...?

Nepal's currency is the Nepalese Rupee. The cost of food and necessities differs depending on your elevation, with Kathmandu being cheaper.

Here's what you can expect to pay in Kathmandu for a:

  • Bottle of water (approx 50 fl oz) = 25-50 NPR
  • Cappuccino = 100-300 NPR
  • Cup of tea/chai = 10-30 NPR
  • Bottle of domestic beer = 200-500 NPR
  • Meal (inexpensive restaurant) = 150-500 NPR

Can I drink the water in Nepal?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Nepal. Filtered water is a better option, try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Nepal?

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, restaurants and medium-large shops in tourist areas. Smaller shops, cafes, market stalls and places in remote areas probably won’t have facilities that support credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover expenses while in rural areas or when visiting smaller vendors and bazaars.

What is ATM access like in Nepal?

ATMs can be found in Nepal's large cities. Smaller towns and isolated areas will have very few, or none at all, so have enough cash to cover purchases, as ATM access may not be available.

Is Nepal accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely   accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Airports are not yet equipped to international accessibility standards and there are few (if any) adapted vehicles available for hire. Only a few high-end hotels have custom built bathrooms ie. with safety rails or roll in showers. Getting around can be challenging for travellers with disabilities as pedestrians often share the road with vehicles, cities and towns are crowded and streets winding and chaotic. Rickshaws and taxis can be hired easily in Kathmandu, although traffic congestion can be severe. Porters and assistants are readily available for trekking trips. The country is keen to make headway in the accessibility space, with an annual conference on Accessible Tourism being held since 2014 and a shift towards more positive attitudes in the way people with disabilities are perceived in the region. The first “accessible trekking trail” in the country was opened near Pokhara in 2018. Travel companies have arranged custom treks and adventures in Nepal for travellers with disabilities, including on the popular Everest Base Camp route.

Is Nepal a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travellers are part of the LGBTQI community. It’s important for our travellers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQI people. We recommend you visit  Equaldex  and/or  Smartraveller  before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQI-related laws.

Nepal legalized homosexuality in 2007 and implemented protection by law on the basis of sexual orientation the same year. The new constitution of 2015 also contained a number of provisions for the LGBTQI community, including the right to have preferred gender on ID cards and allowance of some gender neutral terms. It is expected that future ratifications of the constitution may include legalization of same-sex marriage. Nepal recognizes a third gender (meti). Nepal Pride is an annual event held in Kathmandu since 2001 and the Nepal Tourism Board is keen to promote the country as an LGBTQI-friendly destination. Despite the openness of the laws, many LGBTQI Nepalis face discrimination and societal pressure for heterosexual marriage, with harassment and violence, particularly for transgender people, not uncommon. For the LGBTQI visitor to Nepal it’s unlikely you will experience any difficulties or hostility. Holding hands with your partner is socially acceptable, but public intimacy is generally frowned upon as Nepal is still quite conservative in this regard.

Does my trip to Nepal support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Nepal directly support our foundation partners, Forget Me Not and Seven Women.

Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not reunites children in institutionalized Nepalese orphanages with their families. Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Nepal travel advice

Latest updates: The Need help? section was updated.

Last updated: April 5, 2024 07:23 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, nepal - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Nepal due to the fragile political and security situation.

Petty theft is common, particularly near tourist sites, on buses and in hotel rooms.

Take particular care when walking around Kupandol, Sanepa and Thamel, popular tourist spots in Kathmandu, where pickpocketing is common.

  • Do not leave personal belongings unattended. Armed robberies, particularly of solo trekkers, occur occasionally
  • Exercise caution in and around Kathmandu and other cities
  • Do not travel after dark

Festival season

There is a significant increase in crime, including thefts, purse and bag snatchings, pickpocketing and break-ins, during the festival season, which extends from September to November. Maintain a high level of personal security awareness and ensure that your personal belongings and your passports are secure.

Women’s safety

Women are vulnerable to harassment and verbal abuse. Dress conservatively, particularly in remote areas.

Female tourists travelling alone are more at risk of violent attacks.

Advice for women travellers

Political tensions

While Nepal continues its transition to a stable democracy, the political situation remains fragile and tensions can increase with little notice.

Acts of violence

Small-scale, politically-motivated attacks occasionally occur, especially in Kathmandu. Past attacks have led to injuries and sometimes caused deaths. Foreigners have not been targeted. Further attacks are likely.

Demonstrations

Political protests are common in Nepal and sometimes result in violence. Transport and public services may be disrupted at short notice.

Politically motivated protests have been particularly volatile in Kathmandu as well as in Nepal’s southern region bordering India, which has at times resulted in supply shortages and affected border crossings.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

General strikes (locally referred to as bandhs) are a popular form of political expression and can occur on short notice throughout the country. Such strike action can affect access to services. While bandhs are usually peaceful, riots and violence are possible. During a bandh, businesses and roads may close and transportation services may be unavailable or severely disrupted.

Avoid travelling on public transportation during or immediately preceding bandhs, as tourists have been injured. Transportation to and from airports throughout Nepal could be affected. Army and police checkpoints are frequent, especially at night.

Follow the advice of local authorities and respect curfews and roadblocks.

Trekking and mountain climbing

Many popular trekking trails ascend higher than 5,500 metres.

A number of hikers and guides have been stranded, injured or killed while trekking. You may experience acute mountain sickness at high altitudes and should be well informed on possible hazards in the high mountains.

Drops in temperature and changes in weather conditions, including blizzards and avalanches can occur suddenly in mountainous regions at any time of year.

If you intend to trek:

  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you're properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes or ski slopes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails or slopes

Emergency services such as evacuations and rescues from remote areas are available but can be hindered by:

  • the lack of immediate payment to helicopter rescue services
  • a positive response from clients of their insurance companies
  • limited access to regular phone service in many trekking areas

There have been helicopter rescue scams in the past. Ensure that you are dealing with reputable helicopter companies. Check with your trekking agency for updates on the security situation in the area.

Trekkers’ Information Management System

All trekkers must purchase a trekkers’ information management system (TIMS) card from one of the following entities:

  • the  Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal
  • the  Nepal Tourism Board
  • an authorized trekking company

National park permit

You must obtain a national park entry permit before entering official trekking regions or routes such as those in the Annapurna, Everest and Langtang regions.

Permits may be obtained from the national tourism board after arrival in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

More about trekking permits - Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal

Organize white-water rafting excursions through reputable agencies only.

Due to an energy shortage, electric power cuts, termed “load shedding,” are a year-round occurrence. They occur frequently for short periods and without advance notice.

Public transportation

Most public buses are often poorly maintained and accidents involving buses, often causing injuries and fatalities, are common.

Avoid travelling on overnight buses.

Tourist buses are generally safe.

Boat accidents are common due to the overloading and poor maintenance of vessels. Do not board vessels that appear overloaded or unfit, especially where there are strong currents.

Road safety

Exercise caution when travelling by road as road conditions and driving standards are poor and traffic laws are not enforced.

Drivers often drive at excessive speed and often do not yield right-of-way to pedestrians.

Many mountain and hill roads, which can be hazardous even in the best weather, are intermittently impassable during the monsoon season due to landslides.

Traffic is congested in the Kathmandu Valley.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance constitute a risk in parts of the country, including in some trekking areas. Follow the advice of local authorities, and only travel on well-used roads and paths.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Travellers going to countries in South Asia should speak to a health care professional about getting vaccinated.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination.

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Cholera is a risk in parts of this country. Most travellers are at very low risk.

To protect against cholera, all travellers should practise safe food and water precautions .

Travellers at higher risk of getting cholera include those:

  • visiting, working or living in areas with limited access to safe food, water and proper sanitation
  • visiting areas where outbreaks are occurring

Vaccination may be recommended for high-risk travellers, and should be discussed with a health care professional.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.

  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Outside the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara, medical services and facilities do not meet standards you might expect in Canada.

Most hospitals require up-front payment or confirmation of insurance coverage prior to commencing treatment. Following an incident or accident, you should contact your travel insurance company without delay.

Trekkers may experience frostbite and acute mountain sickness (AMS) at high altitudes. AMS can be deadly.  Medical evacuation to Bangkok, Thailand, New Delhi, India, or Singapore is often necessary for serious conditions. Carry medical and first aid kits.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences, including life imprisonment, and heavy fines.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Nepal.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Nepal by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Nepal to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

The currency is the Nepalese rupee (NPR).

The economy is largely cash-based; however, credit cards can be used in major stores, hotels and restaurants. ATMs are available in larger cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Earthquakes

Nepal is located in an active seismic zone and there is a continued risk of earthquakes, aftershocks and landslides.

Become familiar with local earthquake safety procedures. In the event of an earthquake, exercise caution, follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media.

Monsoon season

The rainy (or monsoon) season extends from June to September. Severe rainstorms can cause flooding and landslides, resulting in significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, and hampering the provision of essential services.

Tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons and monsoons

In mountainous regions, avalanches present a risk and have resulted in fatalities. Monitor local media and weather forecasts and follow the advice of local authorities.

Japan foreign minister visiting to widen scope of bilateral ties

Japan foreign minister visiting to widen scope of bilateral ties

Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamikawa Yoko is set to visit Nepal on May 5. She will be the fourth Japanese foreign minister to come to Nepal since the two countries established diplomatic relations in September 1956.

This will be the first visit to Nepal by a Japanese foreign minister since 2019 and also the first to the country for Kamikawa, who is from Shizuoka prefecture at the foot of the highest peak of Japan, Mount Fuji, the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu said in a statement.

Kamikawa will arrive in Kathmandu after completing visits to several other nations including Sri Lanka, according to officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions will revolve around broader issues of bilateral and mutual interests including Nepal’s vote and support in several international elections at the United Nations and other multilateral forums where Japan is contesting.

“There is also a strategic motive behind the visit as Japan is embracing its role as a middle power and wants to expand its footprint in Asia,” a joint secretary at foreign ministry said. “This is not solely focussed on bilateral relations.”

Against the backdrop of growing rivalry between the US and China, Japan remains a key ally of the US, the joint secretary said. “Kamikawa’s visits to Nepal and Sri Lanka are also intended to send a strategic message to Beijing that Tokyo is also exerting its strategic leverage in the region.”

She will arrive on May 5 and will return on the same evening, Amrit Bahadur Rai, foreign ministry spokesperson said. “We will review all aspects of our relations and discuss possible areas of cooperation. So far no agreement or understanding has been scheduled for signing during the visit.”

Experts, meanwhile, say Nepal should revisit and reorient its ties with Japan, one of the country’s major development partners, and focus on diversifying exports, especially in agriculture, dairy, and fruits-related products. They also suggested Nepal should seek Japanese support in education, health, skill development and earthquake preparedness, among other sectors.

During the visit, the Japanese side will pledge its support for Nepal’s bid to graduate from Least Developed Countries (LDC) and beyond as external support to Nepal will decrease after graduation, a foreign ministry official privy to the visit said.

“We expect to get Japanese support and commitment during the visit,” the official said.

Nepal aims to graduate to a developed nation status by 2026, but certain indicators remain unfavourable.

Both sides will announce the commemoration of the establishment of 70th years of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan in 2026 which will be marked by some high-level visits and some special functions in both capitals.

The Japanese embassy in Kathmandu in a statement expressed hope that the foreign minister’s visit “will give a good impetus for further strengthening our friendly relationship towards the year 2026, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal.”

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to make an official announcement of the Japanese foreign minister’s visit.

The foreign ministry official told the Post that Nepal plans to propose some projects to the Japanese side and the Ministry of Finance is compiling the list.

But former foreign secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai, who also served as Nepali Ambassador Japan, said that “time has come to reorient and revisit our ties with Japan and we should seek some specific assistance from Japan for mutual benefits and for reducing our import dependency.”

“We have to focus on assistance in agriculture-related products such as buckwheat, ginger, turmeric, dairy products, yam, and fruits which have high demand in Japan,” said Bhattarai. “There are also other areas of cooperation, including education, health, skill development, mountain training, development of Lumbini, and earthquake preparedness.”

Japan has a long history of assisting Nepal in agriculture, skill development, education, health, tunnel, transmission lines, and water resources. It has also been providing assistance to hundreds of small projects.

Former ambassador Bhattarai says Nepal could benefit if it is able to engage in commercial scale farming of agricultural products by maintaining Japanese quality standards. This will also help create jobs and standardise our agriculture sector, he says.

As of now, Nepal’s exports to Japan include pashmina, woollen goods, carpets, handicrafts, garment, Nepali paper which is used in making the Japanese currency notes, jewellery items, leather goods, and silver ornaments. Nepal imports vehicles, electronic items and their spare parts, various kinds of machines, medical supplies, textile, and luxury items from the east Asian kingdom.

Bhattarai also suggested that officials should seek Japanese assistance for building teaching hospitals in all seven provinces. The Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital was built with Japanese assistance.

The Nepali Diaspora in Japan is also growing, with as many as 100,000 Nepali nationals currently estimated to be living and working in Japan, thus making them the seventh largest migrant community, according to the Japanese embassy statement.

During her stay, the Japanese foreign minister will meet President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha, among other senior officials.

She will be meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shrestha three times—during a one-on-one, at the delegation-level talks, and at a dinner to be hosted by Shrestha, according to a foreign ministry official.

Japan is contesting several positions at the United Nations and other multilateral forums and seeking our vote, the foreign ministry official said. “It is up to us to commit and assure them on that.”

Bhattarai, the ex-envoy, said there are areas like mountaineering where Japanese are very keen to help others. “The Japan Alpine Club is considered the world’s best mountaineering training centre, with which we can partner,” he added.

“Millions of Japanese want to visit Lumbini, we can bring them here. On seeking development assistance and cooperation, we lack adequate homework, follow-up, or coordination among relevant ministries for effective implementation of projects,” said Bhattarai.
