Claims FAQs

Whether it’s a question about our claim process, when and how to submit a claim, or what to do with claim forms, you’ve come to the right place. Below, Claims at TuGo answers the most common questions we receive.

Have questions about your travel insurance policy? Visit our Travel Insurance FAQs page.

General Claims

Covid-19: claims, tugo telemedicine service.

If you’re claiming for medical expenses, medical providers always have the option to send the bill(s) directly to Claims at TuGo®, but they may have their own protocols that could require you to pay upfront. If that’s the case, be sure to keep all the itemized bills and receipts so that you can send them to us, along with your completed claim form.

For any other type of expenses that require immediate payment (such as hotels, flights, meals, taxis, etc.), you need to pay for these upfront and submit the itemized bills and receipts to Claims at TuGo.

Please keep in mind that if you need to reschedule or book a new flight, Claims at TuGo is not able to do so on your behalf. Airlines have privacy policies in place that require you to contact them directly to make the necessary flight arrangements.

Claims at TuGo’s offices are closed to the public. To start claim as quickly as possible, please submit a claim online with myTuGo. Detailed instructions on how to use myTuGo, along with tips to help process your claim quickly are available here .

Since every claim is different, we work with a number of different providers to resolve your claim. The more parties involved, the longer it could take. However, know that we’re committed to processing your claim as quickly as possible!

On your behalf, we’ll coordinate with:

  • Your attending physician (when the emergency happened)
  • Your family doctor (at home)
  • Other providers (i.e., chiropractors, dentists, etc.)
  • Travel/transportation providers
  • Your car insurance provider

Great question! Here are some tips to help expedite the process:

  • We recommend submitting your signed claim forms online within 60 days from the day you were treated.
  • Make sure you provide all itemized bills and receipts including: • Your full name • Date(s) of service • Amount charged • Type of service/diagnosis • Prescriptions with the itemized pharmacy-issued prescription receipt, not the till or credit card receipt
  • Make sure you’ve signed all required documents

No one likes paperwork… but we need some important details in order to get your claim processed. But we’ll help get you the necessary forms, so you don’t have to track it all down yourself.

On your behalf, we coordinate with a number of parties and each one has its own requirements:

  • The policy Underwriter requires your completed claim form to confirm the claim has been submitted. The decision to pay or decline your claim will be based in part on this information.
  • Provincial Healthcare plans require certain forms to be completed and returned to them. Completing and returning these forms helps expedite the process.
  • Other Insurers (employment/retirement/other healthcare plans, credit card companies, etc.) require an Assignment of Payment. By coordinating with these insurers to whom a premium may already have been paid, we ensure your travel insurance premiums remain low.

Yes. Each form must be completed in full, regardless of the amount of your claim. Incomplete information may result in a delay.

Yes. Once you’ve completed and signed your forms, log into myTuGo, and upload your signed claim forms along with itemized bills, itemized receipts, and other required documents under the Claims section > Upload documents. Make sure to keep a copy for your own records.

Also be prepared to provide:

  • Provincial and extended health information
  • Credit card information for expenses paid by credit card
  • Airline documentation (for Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption policies)

Note : we can’t start your claim without fully completed and signed claim forms, so it’s important that you upload these documents as soon as possible. If original receipts are required, we’ll let you know.

Don't worry; we’ll translate them for you! All you have to do is provide all the documents/receipts you have. However, if you wish to translate them before sending them in, feel free to do so.

  • While you have up to one year from the day of treatment/loss, we suggest that forms be submitted within 60 days. Provincial healthcare plans have tight deadlines for submitting claims. Since we coordinate with these plans on your behalf, if we don’t receive your forms within 60 days of the treatment/loss, your reimbursement could be impacted.
  • You have up to one year after the treatment/loss date to submit all your forms and other paperwork to us. After that, your claim is permanently closed.

Many US medical providers send automatic statements every 30 days to you, without informing us. If you receive any additional bills/statements showing an outstanding balance, upload these additional bills to myTuGo, and we’ll help resolve this issue on your behalf.

  • If you’re making the claim, you’ll need to sign this section.
  • For minors, the legal guardian must sign this section.
  • If you’re signing on behalf of the traveller, you'll need to include a copy of the Power of Attorney, to show you’re legally authorized to do so.
  • This Authority is needed to request your medical information in order to fairly and accurately evaluate your claim.
  • To coordinate with provincial healthcare plans, the Ministry also requires this Authority.
  • If this section isn’t signed, it will delay the processing of your claim.
  • In order to keep travel insurance premiums as low as possible, it’s necessary to share the cost of your claim with other insurers to which a premium has already been paid.
  • Employers often provide extended health benefits to employees and these benefits often continue into retirement. Since travel insurance supplements your other insurance coverages, you’ll need to share this information with us to process your claim.
  • If you (or your spouse) don’t have extended healthcare, or benefits available through another travel insurance plan, travel supplier or credit card, you must sign to acknowledge this.

You’ll need to complete it, if you have other insurance through a group benefits plan, credit card, etc. However, if your spouse is the primary policyholder, he/she will need to sign it.

If you’re a BC resident, and were hospitalized overnight outside the province, MSP requires this additional form. You’ll only need to complete Section A , and we’ll complete the rest for you.

You have the right to dispute you claim denial. For more information on the Complaint process, click here .

Travelling outside of Canada:

TuGo’s COVID-19 benefit is available to you if, before your departure date, you’re compliant with the most current Canadian federal Government COVID-19 vaccine requirements for entry and/or return to Canada.

Since there isn’t currentlyfederal Government COVID-19 vaccine requirements for entry and/or return to Canada, TuGo’s COVID-19 coverage is provided regardless of vaccination status. If the federal Government of Canada reinstates vaccine requirements for entry/return to Canada while you are away on your trip, we will still provide coverage under the COVID-19 benefit if there was no vaccine requirement prior to departing on your trip.

If the federal Government of Canada reinstates vaccine requirements for entry/return to Canada in the future, we will only provide coverage under the COVID-19 benefit if you meet these new requirements before your date of departure.

Travelling within Canada:

COVID-19 coverage is available regardless of vaccination status.

TuGo’s Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance does not provide coverage if you have to cancel due to COVID-19 travel advisories, border closures, or because you don’t want to travel due to high case levels. However, TuGo’s Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance will provide coverage if you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to your medical condition related to COVID-19 (or the medical condition of those listed in the applicable covered risks).

If you test positive for COVID-19 and are unable to return home as planned, coverage for quarantine expenses is available as follows:

  • If you purchased the COVID-19 Insurance – Unvaccinated plan before December 22, 2021, the quarantine benefit provides coverage up to $150/day per insured person (or up to $300/day per family) to a maximum of 14 days for meals and lodging in a commercial accommodation or medical facility.
  • If you purchased a policy with a trip interruption coverage, the out-of-pocket expenses benefit provides coverage up to $350/day per insured person to a maximum of $1,500 per insured person for reasonable expenses for commercial accommodation, meals, internet, telephone and taxi fares.

It doesn’t matter if the test was taken as a result of symptoms or because it was mandated. To substantiate the claim, proof of the positive COVID-19 test result is required. The proof of test result must include the laboratory or medical clinic name, the date of the result and the name of the person tested.

Quarantine expenses such as meals or accommodations are not covered under the Emergency Medical plan.

If you purchased the COVID-19 Insurance – Unvaccinated plan before December 22, 2021, you’re covered up to $150/day per insured person (or up to $300/day per family) to a maximum of 14 days for meals and lodging, if you have been contact traced for COVID-19 and are unable to return home as planned.

Coverage is not provided under the Trip Interruption insurance plan if you've been contact traced for COVID-19 at your travel destination.

Note : To substantiate the claim, proof that you were advised to quarantine or isolate due to contact tracing is required.

You can start a claim online with myTuGo .

Be sure to include proof of the positive COVID-19 test result (which must indicate the name of the laboratory or medical clinic, the date of the test result and name of the person tested) as well as all itemized bills/receipts for the quarantine expenses.

Most travel-related companies are offering to reschedule flights, provide future credits or refunds.

Coverage is only available for non-refundable, prepaid expenses or change fees. If your expenses are eligible for a future travel credit, we won’t reimburse this portion, however, we will reimburse any amount over and above the amount of the future travel credit.

  • My cruise was cancelled, and the cruise line issued me a future cruise credit. Can I claim? No, TuGo does not provide reimbursements if a future credit is accepted.
  • I booked my flight on points and I have to pay a change fee to reschedule my flight. Can I claim for the change fee? Yes, the change fee is covered.

The  US Dept of Transportation  requires that all US and foreign airlines with flights travelling to, within or from the US provide a refund to travellers when the airline cancels the flight.

For example, if you have a flight to New York with Air Canada, and the airline cancels the flight, you’re entitled to a full refund on their airfare.

These expenses aren’t covered under our policy since they are refundable by the airline. TuGo’s Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance covers non-refundable pre-paid travel costs.

  • Since you’re entitled to refunds when these flights are cancelled by the airlines, you must contact the airline directly.
  • Unfortunately, not all airlines are following these obligations, so you may have to escalate a complaint with your carrier.

The  European Commission  requires that any airline with flights travelling within or scheduled to leave Europe to provide a refund to travellers when the airline cancels the flight. For cancelled flights into Europe, refunds are available for all European airlines. This applies to EU member countries and the non-EU members that are part of the Schengen zone (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland).

For example, if you have a flight from Montreal to Paris with Air France, and the airline cancels the flight, you’re entitled to a refund on your airfare. But if you had booked the flight with Air Canada and that flight was cancelled, Air Canada is not required to issue a refund under the EU’s Air Passenger Rights, although they might choose to do so. If the airline does not issue a refund, you may then claim for the non-refundable expenses.

Most of these expenses aren’t covered under our policy since they are refundable by the airline. TuGo’s Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance covers non-refundable pre-paid travel costs.

If you aren’t feeling well and would like to seek medical advice, but don’t think a clinic or hospital visit is necessary, you can access our telemedicine service instead , 24/7. Simply call toll-free 1-866-419-9038 and within 1 hour, you’ll be connected with an experienced, certified physician.

No, using our telemedicine service doesn’t require you to file a claim afterwards, as long as no other in-person treatment is necessary. And as an added perk, if you have a deductible on your travel insurance policy, it won’t apply to the call or any resulting prescription expenses.

If you are prescribed a prescription, you’ll need to pay the pharmacy at the time of purchase. Official prescription pharmacy receipts are required; this must include doctor’s name, medication name and dosage. You’ll be reimbursed by Claims at TuGo. To receive your reimbursement, email receipt(s) to [email protected] or fax to 604-276-4593, including your TuGo policy number. You won’t need to submit a claim form , as long as no other, in-person treatment is necessary. Remember, prescriptions and tests are only covered for medical emergencies.

If you receive a lab or imaging requisition, lab work or diagnostic tests need to be done within 1 business day of the online visit, to be covered. You’ll need to complete a Claims at TuGo claim form by downloading it from tugo.com/en/claims/how-to-make-claim/ , emailing [email protected] or calling 1-800-663-0399. Remember, lab work and tests are only covered for medical emergencies.

What our customers have to say.

If it weren’t for TuGo, my wife and I would have had to pay over $1,000 USD in an Oahu hospital — just for a few liquid stitches after a minor surfing accident. Luckily, TuGo handled everything and we never had to pay a dime out of pocket.

Both of the agents I spoke with were kind and reassuring. We've had TuGo insurance for several years now. I've compared prices and TuGo remains the best. Now that we've had to use the insurance for an emergency, we're even more convinced  — thank you.

You may think you’re covered,  but you’re probably not.

Most of us think our credit cards, employee group benefits or provincial health care plans will cover us for medical emergencies while we travel, but they won’t cover everything .

Your provincial health care plan won’t cut it

When you travel outside of Canada, your provincial health care plan covers less than 10% of your travel medical expenses – a one-night stay in a US hospital on average costs over $15,000.

Medical treatment in other countries  is expensive

Medical bills, especially from the US, add up quickly. W ithout the right coverage, you could find yourself responsible for paying thousands of dollars—not how you were hoping to end your vacation.

Founded in 1964, North American Air Travel Insurance Agents Ltd., operating as TuGo, is a licensed insurance agency in all Canadian provinces and territories. TuGo is based in Richmond, BC.

TuGo’s insurance policies are underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services and Industrial Alliance Pacific General Insurance Corporation.

To get a quote from TuGo Insurance you need to choose a travel insurance partner in your area. This review is based on information provided by Travel Insurance Office Inc., which is based in Markham, Ont.

Here are the key types of travel insurance coverage offered in TuGo travel insurance plans:

  • Emergency medical insurance: If you get ill or are injured on your trip, travel medical insurance can pay for emergency medical expenses, up to the coverage limits in your plan. These expenses can include doctor and hospital bills, medication and lab work.
  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you cancel a trip for a reason listed in your travel policy, such as you or your travelling companion becoming ill, weather conditions causing a massive delay or you end up losing your job,  trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable costs.
  • Travel interruption or delay insurance: Trip interruption insurance can pay for a last-minute flight home in an emergency and money that you lose if you have to return home earlier than expected, such as non-refundable activities and hotel stays. If your flight is delayed , your insurance can cover the cost of incidentals, such as meals or accommodations, after a specified period of time, usually six, 10 or 12 hours.
  • Baggage insurance: Baggage travel insurance can compensate you up to your policy limits if your luggage is lost or stolen. It will reimburse the depreciated value of your suitcases and what you packed. If your checked bags are delayed, it can reimburse you for the cost of the necessities you’ll have to buy to tide you over.
  • Travel accident insurance:  This coverage offers compensation in the event of accidental death or catastrophic injury from an accident during your trip. Flight Accident Insurance covers injury while you’re on a commercial plane, during a connection or in an airport. Travel Accident Insurance covers death or dismemberment, including the loss of limbs or eyesight, while in transit during your trip.

TuGo allows you to customize the amount of coverage you need. You can choose one of two package options— the All Inclusive Holiday Package or Non-Medical Package—or pick individual insurance plans à la carte. For example, you could choose the Emergency Medical Excluding USA plan with the optional baggage coverage, or the Trip Interruption plan and rental car protection coverage. TuGo also has several optional insurance upgrades to give you higher coverage limits.

All Inclusive Holiday Package: This option includes emergency medical insurance, trip cancellation & trip interruption, accidental death & dismemberment and basic baggage insurance coverage.

Coverage for emergency medical treatment includes:

  • Hospital accommodation up to a semi-private room
  • Physician fees
  • Ambulance services, including ground, air or sea to the nearest hospital
  • Diagnostic lab tests and X-rays
  • Prescription drugs, all in-hospital plus 30-day supply after release
  • Medical appliances, such as a wheelchair, crutches or cane
  • Private duty nursing
  • One follow-up visit within 14 days after the initial treatment for a medical emergency
  • Specific provisions for fracture treatment, including up to $1,250 for X-rays, re-examinations, casting and re-casting, as well as cast removal, after the initial emergency treatment and one follow-up visit
  • Other professional medical services, such as physiotherapist, chiropractor, chiropodist, osteopath, podiatrist, optometrist and acupuncturist, up to $700 per practitioner
  • Emergency dental due to a blow to the face, to the policy limit, plus 30-days of treatment when you return home
  • Emergency dental due to illness or pain, up to $700
  • Unexpected birth of child, up to $25,000 (not payable during the nine weeks before or after your due date)
  • Non-medical evacuation from a remote location, up to $6,000, including search and rescue services
  • Replacement of prescription glasses or contact lenses due to theft, loss or breakage, and/or replacement of a hearing aid due to theft, loss or breakage, up to $1,000
  • Medical follow-up in Canada including up to semi-private accommodation in a hospital, rehabilitation centre or convalescent home (up to $1,000), up to $100 per day for private nursing, up to $300 for licensed ambulance or taxi services and up to $300 to rent or purchase essential medical appliances, for 15 days after your return date

Medical coverage also provides a hospital allowance to cover incidental expenses, such as TV rental and telephone, as well as one-way economy fare to return home if medically necessary (and includes a travelling companion or medical attendant), as well as baggage return, pet return and return of dependent children. If your return home is delayed, this benefit covers meals and accommodations.

Non-Medical Package: If you have emergency medical coverage elsewhere, such as through a travel credit card, the Non-Medical Package provides you with trip cancellation & trip interruption insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and baggage insurance. You can purchase the Non-Medical Package and the Emergency Medical Insurance as separate policies.

Emergency Medical: If you’re only worried about medical emergencies while travelling, this benefit offers all of the medical coverage listed above. There are two plans for travellers outside of Canada: The Emergency Medical Worldwide plan and the Emergency Medical Worldwide Excluding USA plan.

The Emergency Medical Excluding USA provides coverage for outside of the United States, except for:

  • Flight stopovers or flight layovers in the U.S. up to 48 hours
  • Transit through the U.S. by car, van, truck, recreational vehicle, motorcycle, bus or train for up to five days to your travel destination and up to five days to return from your travel destination

Keep in mind that if you are travelling by cruise ship and the cruise departs from or stops at any ports in the U.S., you must purchase a Worldwide plan for the full duration of your trip.

It’s important to note that there is a waiting period with the emergency medical insurance that is laid out as follows:

  • If your policy was purchased within seven days after departure, there is no coverage for any disease or illness (either arising or exhibiting symptoms) during the first 48 hours of the effective date, and any related expenses after the first 48 hours, or
  • If your policy was purchased more than seven days after departure, there is no coverage for any disease or illness (either arising or exhibiting symptoms) in the first seven days from the effective date, including any related expenses.

Family & Friends: This plan is available with the Emergency Medical plan and covers up to two travellers aged 59 years old and under and up to six dependent children. The travellers named in this plan do not have to be the parents or guardians of the dependent children.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption: This coverage option reimburses you for insured travel expenses (such as hotels or prepaid excursions) if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered risk. The benefits depend on the reason for the trip cancellation or interruption.

Trip Interruption Only: This coverage option reimburses you for insured travel expenses (such as hotels or prepaid excursions) if you have to interrupt your trip after departure due to a covered risk.

Accidental Death or Dismemberment: This coverage option offers reimbursement in the event you die, or lose the use of one or more limbs, during a flight or while entering or leaving a common carrier, defined as a boat, cruise ship, airline, bus, taxi, train or other similar vehicle that is licensed and intended to carry passengers for hire. This plan also includes a 24-hour Accident benefit of $25,000 that is paid out in the event of death or dismemberment as a result of an accident in any other situation.

MyFlyt Service: When your flight is delayed by two or more hours, this service automatically gives you access to an airport lounge, as long as you register your flight at least one hour before the original scheduled departure time. If the airport lounge is overbooked or there is no airport lounge, you will instead receive an immediate $40 cash payout via Interac , PayPal or bank transfer. (The bank transfer can take up to 72 hours, depending on your bank.) This service is available at no extra cost to anyone with TuGo travel insurance, even if you don’t have trip interruption coverage.

We’ve highlighted the key benefits for each coverage option available for the single trip plan when travelling outside of Canada to help you identify which is the best fit for you.

The price of a TuGo travel insurance plan depends on factors such as the cost of your trip, your age and the amount of coverage you choose.

Here are some examples of the cost for TuGo single trip plans for healthy travellers based in Ontario. These quotes assume a $0 deductible for the emergency medical insurance and that the insured will not be travelling through the US.

To access a quote from TuGo, you must select a travel insurance partner in your area. These sample quotes were sourced from Travel Insurance Office Inc. Actual prices may differ depending on your choice of travel insurance partner.

It’s easy to build a quote with TuGo as you can click on and off the coverage options you want to create a customized insurance plan.

Note: The All Inclusive Holiday Package is not available (N/A) for the couple travelling to Mexico as they are older than the 59-year-old maximum age limit.

With your Emergency Medical excluding USA coverage, you can also add an optional deductible, or the amount you will pay out of pocket before your coverage kicks in. Here’s how the purchase of a deductible affects your premium.

Baggage Insurance: This optional coverage can be purchased to increase the amount of baggage coverage from $500 to $1,500 per insured to a maximum of $3,000 for the Family & Friends plan. This benefit also covers the loss of currency due to theft up to $100. If your baggage is delayed by 12 hours while travelling, this benefit will provide up to $200 for personal necessities.

Rental Car Protection: This optional coverage provides up to $75,000 for physical damage to a rented or leased vehicle, in lieu of any collision damage insurance purchased from the rental or leasing agency. Physical damage in excess of $2,000 must be documented by a police report.

Sports & Activities Coverage: This optional coverage can be purchased as an add-on to an Emergency Medical insurance plan. This add-on does not increase the maximum limits of the plan, but provides coverage for activities otherwise excluded from coverage. The coverage provided under this endorsement is as follows:

For all ages: TuGo will cover medical and related expenses for an acute, sudden and unexpected medical condition while participating in, training for or practicing for the following sport or activity, if you select the sport or activity when completing your application.

TuGo will cover up to the policy limit of $10 million for these activities:

  • Backcountry skiing or snowboarding
  • Downhill freestyle skiing or snowboarding
  • Downhill mountain biking
  • Ice climbing
  • Mixed martial arts
  • Mountaineering
  • Rock climbing

TuGo will cover up to $500,000 for these activities:

  • Football (American and Canadian)

Using the sample quote (above) of a couple going to Mexico, adding scuba diving over 40 metres to their Emergency Medical Excluding USA coverage will add $191.68 to their premium.

Unstable Pre-Existing Medical Condition Coverage: This add-on can be purchased as an endorsement to an Emergency Medical Insurance Worldwide plan or Worldwide Excluding USA plan. It provides the following benefits:

TuGo will pay for the reasonable and customary charges for medical and related expenses up to the policy limits incurred due to a pre-existing medical condition that was not stable before your date of departure. TuGo will not provide coverage for any medical condition that is not stable on or within the seven days before you leave on your trip.

Using the sample quote (above) of a couple going to Italy, adding the Unstable Pre-Existing Condition coverage to their Emergency Medical Excluding USA coverage will add $95.26 to their premium.

TuGo Travel Insurance FAQs

Does tugo pay for medical costs upfront.

According to the company, in many cases TuGo can work directly with the medical service provider, such as a hospital or clinic, to pay expenses directly due to its “network of preferred providers.” However, some hospitals will require a deposit upfront or will require you to pay expenses out-of-pocket. In this case, TuGo suggests opening a claim immediately and submitting your signed claims forms and any original itemized bills and receipts.

Does TuGo cover COVID-19?

Emergency medical care for COVID-19 is covered up the policy limits if before your date of departure you are travelling with all federal travel vaccine requirements issued by the Government of Canada for entry or return to Canada, if there are any. The company notes that as there currently is no federal vaccine requirement, TuGo’s coverage is provided regardless of vaccination status.

Does TuGo offer coverage extensions?

Yes. Your coverage is automatically extended for up to seven days if your return home is prevented due to a transportation delay. If you, your travelling companion or family member are hospitalized, your coverage will be extended for the length of your hospitalization, plus up to seven days after discharge. If you, your travelling companion or a family member are unwell but not hospitalized, your coverage will be extended for up to seven days. If you, your travelling companion or your family member are quarantined due to a positive COVID-19 test, your coverage will be automatically extended for up to 14 days.

You can also request an extension if you want to stay longer on your trip, provided you have not submitted a claim and have no intent to submit a claim, your policy has not already expired and your trip length is not longer than two years from the effective date of the original policy. If you have Emergency Medical insurance coverage, you can request an extension if you haven’t seen a physician or other registered medical practitioner since you left on your trip and you’re not currently experiencing any symptoms or have no reason to seek medical attention.

Does TuGo require a medical questionnaire?

Yes. Travellers aged 60 and over are required to complete a medical questionnaire to determine your insurance premium when purchasing the multi-trip annual worldwide medical insurance, the single-trip worldwide medical insurance and the single-trip excluding USA. medical insurance.

If you have to make a claim and if during the claims process TuGo discovers your answers to the medical questionnaire are false or inaccurate, a $15,000 US deductible will be applied to your claim, in addition to any other deductible you may have selected. Coverage will not be provided until you correct your answers and pay any additional premium that may be required.

Does TuGo have any age restrictions?

Yes. The All Inclusive Holiday Package is only available for travellers 59 years old and under. All travellers aged 60 and over are required to complete a medical questionnaire to determine their insurance premium. The company notes that its Emergency Medical insurance “covers all ages.”

When does my coverage with TuGo begin?

In general, if you purchase cancellation coverage, it begins the day you buy your policy and ends the day you make a claim or leave on your trip. Your interruption coverage, if purchased, begins when you leave home. Your delay coverage begins once an insured risk prevents you from returning home as scheduled.

Can I get a refund with TuGo?

In general, you can request a cancellation and full refund of your contract before the effective date of the contract (or the date the coverage begins) or during the 10 days following the date of purchase, with some exceptions. If your trip is cancelled before any penalties from the travel suppliers apply, you’ll get a full refund, less an administration fee.

Does TuGo offer a free look period?

Yes. TuGo gives you 10 days after the application date of the policy to review and cancel your contract if you’re not satisfied with it. A full refund is available as long as no travel has taken place and your policy has not expired.

The specific coverage may vary depending on the plan you choose, but here are some common types of coverage that TuGo Travel Insurance typically provides:

TuGo’s Top-Up Travel Insurance: Your Questions Answered

Think you’re sufficiently covered by your work benefit or credit card travel insurance for your next trip? Think again! One reason why you’d want—and need—to top up your existing travel insurance policy is that it may not cover the entire length of your planned trip.

For example, if you have a group plan from your work that offers only up to 30 days of coverage, and your trip is 45 days long, you can get TuGo Travel Insurance as a top-up policy to cover the remainder of your trip; in this case, it’d be 15 days. The additional days you purchase with TuGo ensures that you’ll have coverage for the entire duration of your time away.

5 frequently asked questions about top-up travel insurance

Topping up travel insurance might be more common than you think. Here are some common questions from travellers:

1. Why do I need to get top-up travel insurance?

It’s generally not a good idea to get coverage for only a portion of your trip. Top-up insurance covers you the day after another travel insurance policy expires, in effect extending your coverage, so you won’t be left unprotected for any number of days. When in doubt, it’s best to top up your insurance to ensure continuous coverage for those unexpected medical emergencies or accidents while you’re away .

Note: If you have travel insurance coverage from another provider, you should always verify   that they allow their coverage to be topped up by another provider (such as TuGo), as they may void or restrict your coverage if you don’t extend or top-up with them directly.

2. What are my top-up travel insurance options with TuGo?

At TuGo, you can get the following Emergency Medical Insurance plans to top up your existing coverage:

Multi Trip Annual Emergency Medical Travel Insurance

  • Within Canada

Single Trip Emergency Medical Travel Insurance

  • Worldwide excluding USA

If you’re unsure whether to get single trip or annual coverage for future travel, consider the value of an annual travel insurance policy , if you plan to travel more than once in a given year.

3. I’m already with TuGo—can I top up an existing TuGo plan?

If you already have a TuGo Travel Insurance policy and would like to add more days of coverage to that plan, you can ask for an extension. Extensions are available to TuGo customers if your current policy hasn’t expired/lapsed, or if you haven’t submitted or plan to submit a claim.

There are also instances when your existing coverage will be automatically extended, at no additional cost to you. Read more about how to extend your TuGo travel insurance policy .

If you’re ready to extend your existing TuGo coverage, call TuGo Customer Service at 1-855-929-8846 or email us at [email protected] .

4. How many days can I top up a policy with TuGo Travel Insurance?

If you’re 59 years old or younger, you can top up your coverage for up to 365 days. If you’re 60 years old and over, you can get coverage for up to 182 (6 months) or 212 days (7 months), depending on your home province.

5. Can I still top up my policy if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you can top up your travel insurance policy if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Coverage for your pre-existing medical condition would need to meet stability requirements that are based on your age, and total trip length, including the number of days you’re topping up with TuGo. Here’s how pre-existing medical conditions can impact insurance claims .

Happy travels,

Justin

Hi, I have recently graduated from university (23 years old) and live in Ontario. I am travelling to France to work leaving end of September and returning for Christmas on December 19. I am returning to France January 1 to work until May 1 2017. I may travel in Europe after May 1 returning to Ontario Canada late summer. I have no specific medical insurance beyond OHIP at this time. What is best approach to medical insurance while I am away?

Hi Shirley, Thank you for your query! We’re so happy to hear that you’re embarking on a European adventure – it sounds very exciting. Most Canadians don’t know that provincial health coverage (such as OHIP) only pays for less than 10% of health care costs in case of a medical emergency when travelling outside Canada ( http://blog.tugo.com/en/blog/provincial-health-care-coverage-outside-canada/ ), so it’s a great idea to consider travel insurance for your upcoming trip. In your case, since you’ll be taking multiple trips to, from, and within Europe, it’s best to choose a multi-trip annual policy. Learn more about it in our blog post ( http://blog.tugo.com/en/blog/4-things-to-know-about-multi-trip-annual-travel-insurance/ ) or connect with our customer service toll-free at 1-855-929-8846 or by email at [email protected] for more details on coverage options before your trip. Bonne chance! Shweta
