These may just save my life if I ever become pregnant…

Avatar

Disclosure : I was gifted a case of the Voyager Estate red and white sparkling grape juice.

Immediately when I think about sparkling grape juice, I think of pregnant women and children. I mean why else would you go there?

Recently Voyager Estate in the Margaret River gifted me a case each of their sparkling red and white grape juices for me to taste. I’m quite a fan of the Voyager Estate wines (the alcoholic ones, that is!) so I thought they couldn’t be all bad. And hey, there’s no rules about not spiking the grape juice with vodka now is there!

Before I received the bottles I decided to do some digging into why the heck they are wasting good quality wine grapes on such products and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised and I absolutely love the story behind these alcohol free sparkling wines.

The story behind Voyager Estates Grape Juice

The founder of Voyager Estate, Michael Wright, surprisingly enough was not a big boozer. Yep you read that right! Therefore he began his own side project at the winery and that was to use the same grapes used in the wines to make alcohol free sparkling grape juice. Michael has sadly passed away but the Voyager Estate team like to keep his legacy alive by continuing to make it.

The grapes may change year on year which go into the grape juice however you can be sure that they’re of exceptional quality and are treated with as much care as their award-winning, world-class wines. The grapes are machine-harvested (at about 14-15 baumé, 280-300g/L sugar) and then crushed and pressed immediately after.

The red sparkling grape juice gets its colour from spending 6-8 hours on its red grape skins after crushing. After this the grape juice is filtered to give it that crystal clear demeanour and then diluted to make it not so syrupy. Once at the perfect level the juice is moved into stainless steel tanks to be pressurised with carbon dioxide to give it that lovely fizz.

Voyager Estate Sparkling White Grape Juice 6-pack

So what’s the verdict on this non-alcoholic grape juice?

Firstly, I’m a sucker for lovely packaging. The brown, nearly vintage looking carry pack of six 330ml bottles looks fantastic. It’d look classy to take along to a BBQ or picnic and I’m sure most people would probably think it was alcoholic too. So perhaps a good one to hide the baby news 😉

A case of 24 bottles sells roughly for $100, so you’re looking at about $4 per bottle which is pretty reasonable in my opinion. A great alternative to soft drink which sells at a fairly similar price. The 2012 vintage which I received (haha yes it’s vintage non-alcoholic grape juice of course!) is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes for the white and Shiraz grapes for the red. Personally I preferred the white better, I didn’t find it as sweet as the red, and it seemed to have a touch more acidity which is right up my alley.

Where can you buy the grape juice?

The Grape Juice is stocked at The Boat Shed in Cottesloe , The Re Store in Leederville , The Herdsman in Churchlands , Basils in Mindarie and Liquor Barons in Swanbourne and of course on the Voyager Estate website . If you’re on the East coast of Aussie, then you’ll need to order it online via the website.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Grape Juice

Voyager Estate is a beautiful winery in the always impressive Margaret River region. It is easily one of my favourite parts of the world. It is a foodie heaven and is a veritable treasure trove of incredible wineries. If you’re a wine lover and haven’t already, then a day spent driving down Caves Road is an absolute must! It’s just winery after winery and they have beautiful cellar doors and many have lovely restaurants. On second thoughts, you are going to need more than a day…make it a week!

One such winery is the very impressive Voyager Estate. Founder, Michael Wright chose the site of the vineyards in Stevens Valley because “ it had the ideal characteristics to create wines that are at home amongst the world’s best.  Its geology is the oldest in Australia and the gravel soils, microclimate, aspect and consistent maritime influence make up the foundations of the distinctive Voyager Estate style.”

I’ve enjoyed many bottles of Voyager Estate wines over the years, it’s a well-crafted and entirely enjoyable drop and I’d say that my GG would count their Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot as one of his favourites.

For those however who don’t drink wine, then an option now offered by Voyager is their Sparkling Grape Juice. It is available in both white and red and is made from their Estate-grown grapes, which are selected during the vintage and treated with as much care and loving attention as the grapes they use in their wines.

I recently had the opportunity to try their Sparkling Grape Juice and it is indeed a pleasant drop. Elegantly presented in vintage chic brown cardboard 6 pack boxes, at first glance it is easy to assume that these are a boozy beverage.  Lightly fizzed and not too sweet, I think they work really well for those times you are keen to enjoy a non-alcoholic option. Perfect perhaps for a Dry July challenge or if you have a bun in the oven or it would even be popular with kids as a replacement for soft drinks.

1012602_10152084383111456_4458002893359369540_n

My sister and GG also shared this sentiment and we enjoyed a lovely dinner where VE Sparkling Grape Juice was the beverage of choice. I’d say of the two I preferred the white, just because it wasn’t quite as sweet as the red, which actually reminded me a little of Ribena. Like a grown up, fizzy Ribena drink, nothing wrong with that! A case prices at $100, which translates to $4.15 a bottle, which isn’t too bad when you think about what a bottle of soft drink goes for these days. I’d much rather drink fizzy grape juice then a soft drink where artificial sweeteners and other mystery bits and pieces are thrown in the mix. Keep it au naturale with high quality bottled grape juice.

Voyager Estate Sparkling Grape Juice has been so popular that their 2012 vintage has just sold out, but their next vintage is now available and for details of where you can buy it, just head to their website ! Bottles can be ordered through their website or in selected retailers across Australia including The Herdsman (Churchlands) and the Boatshed (Cottesloe) in the West.

Best virgin moscow mule recipe.

Best Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

Nov 30, 2019

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling Water
  • Fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  • Simple syrup

Instructions:

  • You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
  • Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
  • Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
  • Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
  • Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Moscow Muled copper mugs filled with clear liquid ice cubs and lime slices

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

one whole ginger beside four sliced ginger

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup.

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

Moscow Muled copper mug filled with liquid cranberries and sliced lime

We hope this article has been useful in helping to introduce you to the Virgin Moscow Mule! The Moscow Mule is an incredibly versatile drink, so don't hesitate to let your creativity push you to experiment with new variations. And, if you want to take your presentation and style up a notch, make sure to equip your kitchen bar with a few copper mugs !

Fresh + Delicious Food

Spring berry moscow mule.

Today, I am serving up a fresh, Spring cocktail with a twist on an old favorite: a Spring Berry Moscow Mule. Muddled berries mixed in a spicy, tangy cocktail? Yes, please!

Spring has arrived in the Golden Isles, bringing with it an abundance of sunshine, lovely gusts of wind and the occasional rain shower. Beach season is on and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate after a tough day by the ocean.

Tasty fresh berries abound, too. So, I created this drink as nod to all things Spring. Bubbly and bright, this tasty beverage is super easy to make, too.

The Spring Berry Moscow Mule starts with muddled berries in a chilled, shiny copper mule mug. You can make it any glass, but these copper mugs are so fun and they keep your drink icy longer. Then, I add ice, lime juice and vodka. I give it a good stir at this point. Finally, I top it all off with ginger beer. Make it even more fun by garnishing your cocktail with fresh berries.

Serve up this refreshing Spring cocktail at your next happy hour! Cheers!

Spring Berry Moscow Mule

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of mixed berries plus some for garnishing
  • 4 oz vodka I love Tito's
  • 2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 8 oz alcoholic ginger beer

Instructions

  • Divide berries among 2 chilled copper mule mugs. Muddle gently.
  • Add ice, vodka and lime juice. Stir
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Garnish with fresh berries.

Raise a toast on Mother’s Day with elegant cocktails and appetizers

For a refreshing start, mix up a spanish-inspired yayo or a pomegranate mimosa. for more drama, try a cinnamon-smoked whiskey sour. pair them with garlicky shrimp and brazilian-style cheese puffs..

Three glasses with a dark drink, a lemon slice, and ice set on a wooden surface. Beside them are two small snack bowls, one with olives and the other with nuts.

This Mother’s Day, celebrate Mom with a selection of elegant — but surprisingly simple — cocktails and appetizers. First, a Spanish-inspired yayo, a refreshing concoction that balances the aromatic complexity of vermouth with the crispness of gin and lemon, topped off with seltzer for a bubbly finish. Next, our pomegranate mimosa puts a vibrant twist on a cocktail classic, blending the deep flavors of pomegranate with the subtle depth of Angostura bitters, crowned with sparkling wine. For a more dramatic touch, our riff on the whiskey sour infuses citrus-spiked bourbon with cinnamon smoke — no fancy bar equipment needed. And to complete the menu, pair the drinks with a few savory small bites. Delightfully chewy and cheesy, dainty Brazilian-style cheese puffs come together quickly in the blender. And we sizzle succulent shrimp in a garlicky, paprika-infused oil for our two-minute take on a tapas bar favorite.

Makes 1 drink

This cocktail is traditionally made with a Spanish lemon-lime soda that is less sweet than most available in the United States. We found that combining fresh lemon juice and seltzer water, then upping the vermouth, not only made up for the loss, but also kept our cocktail tasting lighter and fresher. We love the flavor of Spanish Lustau vermouth here, but any sweet vermouth works. Just make sure it’s something you enjoy on its own, as its flavor dominates the cocktail.

2½ ounces sweet vermouth (such as Lustau)

1 ounce gin

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

2 ounces sparkling water

Lemon wedge for garnish

In a glass, stir together the vermouth, gin, and lemon juice. Add several large ice cubes, then top with sparkling water and a lemon wedge to serve.

Pomegranate Mimosa

Inspired by the classic champagne cocktail, we wanted to dress up a glass of sparkling wine without masking the flavor. We kept the bitters, but rather than sprinkle them on a sugar cube — which usually is dropped to the bottom of the glass — we combine them with a bit of tart pomegranate juice, creating a beautiful layered cocktail with a gentle fruitiness.

Two champagne flutes with a champagne with a slightly red tint and pomegranate pieces floating in them.

Fill each flute glass about two-thirds full with sparkling wine, or about 4 ounces for a standard flute.

4 ounces sparkling wine

3/4 ounce pomegranate juice

4 dashes Angostura bitters

Pomegranate seeds, to garnish

Fill a flute glass with sparkling wine. Allow the bubbles to settle, then gently tilt the glass to the side and slowly pour in the pomegranate juice. Top with bitters, then garnish with several pomegranate seeds.

Cinnamon-Smoked Whiskey Sour

A glass with whiskey with two sage leaves on top and orange garnish in the bottom set on a saucer. Beside the glass is a cinnamon stick.

Lake Placid bartender Zachary Blair crafted this cocktail with aged rum but says any hard liquor works. We tried gin, Scotch, and gold rum, but preferred the heft and balance that bourbon gives this citrusy cocktail. Blair recommends using a wine glass to capture the smoky aroma; if the smoldering cinnamon stick is too long to fit under the glass, turn it upright and let it rest on the side of the glass as it smokes.

3-inch cinnamon stick

2 ounces bourbon

1/2 ounce maple syrup

1/2 ounce lime juice

1½ ounces grapefruit juice

2-inch strip orange zest, plus a splash of orange juice

2 sage leaves

Using a brûlée torch, gas stove burner, or a match, set fire to one end of the cinnamon stick. It will burn briefly, then extinguish. Once it does, set it on a plate or other heatproof surface and cover with a wine glass.

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the bourbon, maple syrup, and all three juices. Shake for 15 seconds, then turn the glass upright and double-strain the drink into it. Slap the sage leaves to release their oils, then garnish the drink with the leaves and the orange zest.

Brazilian Cheese Puffs (Pão de Queijo)

Makes 24 puffs

These savory puffs — called pão de queijo — are similar to popovers, with two important differences: tapioca starch (also called tapioca flour) gives them a unique chewiness, while a generous dose of cheese makes them particularly savory.

In Brazil, the cheese of choice is queijo minas curado; we found that more widely available Asiago had just the right balance of salty-sharp flavor to make delicious puffs. Pão de queijo are best eaten within a couple hours of baking, but the puffs can be frozen and reheated in a 350-degree oven for 5 to 10 minutes (do not thaw before reheating).

You will need a nonstick 24-cup mini-muffin pan for this recipe.

When processing the batter, stop the blender and scrape the jar as needed. This ensures the tapioca starch that clings to the sides will be fully incorporated. And no need to worry about overblending — there’s no wheat flour in the batter, so there’s no risk of developing gluten that can toughen the puffs.

186 grams (1½ cups) tapioca starch

2/3 cup whole milk

1/3 cup grape-seed or other neutral oil

1 large egg

1/2 teaspoon table salt

1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

85 grams (3 ounces) Asiago cheese, shredded (1¼ cups)

Heat the oven to 400 degrees with a rack in the middle position. Mist a nonstick 24-cup mini-muffin pan with cooking spray. In a blender, combine all ingredients. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute, scraping the sides of the blender jar as needed.

Divide the batter among the cups of the prepared muffin pan. Bake until the puffs are well risen and deep golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Immediately transfer them from the pan to a wire rack by lifting them out one at a time. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Variation: Brazilian Cheese Puffs With Gruyère and Chives

Substitute an equal amount of Gruyère cheese for the Asiago. After blending, stir in 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives.

A serving platter with cooked shrimp topped with a light red sauce, pieces of garlic, and some green herbs. There are pieces of crusty bread on the side of the platter.

Two-Minute Shrimp With Garlic and Paprika

Makes 4 servings

Gambas al ajillo, or shrimp with garlic, is one of the best-known Spanish tapas. Briny-sweet shrimp are gently cooked in a generous amount of olive oil infused with toasted garlic and, oftentimes, dried red chilies. The dish comes together quickly and easily, and with just a handful of ingredients, many of which you probably already have in the kitchen. In our rendition of gambas al ajillo, we add smoked paprika and pepper flakes, as well as finishing touches of parsley and lemon wedges.

Feel free to use shrimp that are slightly larger or smaller, but be sure to adjust the cooking time.

Serve crusty bread alongside for dipping into the flavorful oil.

1 pound extra large (26/30 per pound) shrimp, peeled, deveined, and patted dry

Kosher salt

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

6 medium garlic cloves, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, plus more to serve

Lemon wedges, to serve

Flaky sea salt, to garnish (optional)

In a medium bowl, toss the shrimp with 1 teaspoon salt, then set aside.

In a 12-inch skillet, combine the oil, paprika, pepper flakes, and garlic. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is fragrant and rust-colored and the garlic is golden brown, about 2 minutes.

Add the shrimp in an even layer and cook, without stirring, until pink on the bottoms, about 1 minute. Flip each shrimp and cook until opaque throughout, about 1 minute longer. Off heat, stir in the parsley. Transfer to a wide, shallow serving dish and serve with lemon wedges. Garnish with flaky sea salt, if using.
