Drivers are being urged to take care ahead of rush hour after a day of wintry weather . Parts of Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas have seen heavy snowfall today (March 9).
Two major roads on the edge of the region are both currently closed in both directions due to heavy snow. The A628 Woodhead Pass is shut in both directions between Hollingworth, in Tameside , and the Flouch roundabout at the A616, in South Yorkshire .
The A57 Snake Pass is also closed, between the A6013 at Ladybower Reservoir, and Hurst Road. Electronic warning signs for the route's closure are also not working, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

The two roads through Derbyshire are major routes between Manchester and Sheffield. Traffic in Tameside is also being affected by roadworks on the A57 Hyde Road, from the Hattersley roundabout to John Kennedy Road, with the eastbound section currently closed off.
Elsewhere in the Peak District, the Cat and Fiddle road, the A6024 at Holme Moss and the A53 between Buxton and Leek are also closed in both directions. National Highways is urging drivers heading between Manchester and Sheffield to use the M60, M62 and M1 instead.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "A severe weather alert for snow in the midlands and north of England was issued for today (Thursday, March 9) and National Highways is asking everyone travelling in these areas to consider if their journey is essential and to go prepared. Preparation includes enhanced around-the-clock vigilance and resourcing along key routes such as the M62, A628 and A66 trans-Pennine locations.
"For safety reasons, the decision has been taken to proactively close the A628. Snow is expected to be persistent and heavy from Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire northwards, with significant accumulations above 100-150 metres.
"Up to 5-10 cm is expected to build up quite widely for these elevations over the course of Thursday and overnight into Friday, with at least 10-20 cm for the Trans-Pennine routes and roads around Sheffield/Huddersfield. There is an increasing risk of 20-30 cm building up on the A628 Woodhead Pass and M62 J21-23.
"For low-lying routes in the North West and North East, especially near coastal regions, accumulations should be negligible. With widespread 40-50 mph wind gusts also occurring at the same time in the North West, drifting snow is another hazard on exposed routes. Coupled with poor visibility, driving conditions are expected to be challenging, particularly on the Pennines routes and during the evening rush hour."

Trans-Pennine corridor
Help determine the future of Longdendale
Please take our quick online survey to have an input to our future campaigning for this stunning and hugely threatened area of the Peak District.
Mottram bypass and Glossop link road
The A57/A628 Trans-Pennine Upgrade Scheme would have profound adverse impacts on the Longdendale Valley and the western setting of the National Park. The proposals are for a dual carriageway bypass of Mottram and a link road to Glossop, with safety measures in the National Park.
By relieving the traffic jam in Mottram, the proposal is likely to increase traffic along several cross-Park routes such as the A624 to Hayfield, A57 Snake Pass, A628 Woodhead and A6024 to Holmfirth, and through the villages of Langsett, Hollingworth and Tintwistle. We fully support the need to alleviate communities along the route of the adverse traffic conditions but believe that other measures should be tried before major road building turns the area into one vast traffic junction.
A628 Woodhead route
The A628 Woodhead route passes straight through the heart of the Peak District National Park which has the strongest protection in the country. Government proposals for upgrading the route would cause immense damage to well-loved landscapes and European nature conservation sites.
Local residents of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle have long endured congestion with air pollution and heavy lorries on their doorsteps. Others are looking for a fast all-weather direct road route connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.
We believe that congestion and connectivity can be significantly improved without building new roads, as shown by research from the Metropolitan Transport Research Unit (MTRU). A package of measures – routing HGVs via the M62, investment in rail and bus services, active travel for local people and slower speeds – would free up road space for longer journeys and contribute to wider sustainability and health objectives in the area.
A new fast trans-Pennine rail link for passengers and freight should be the priority, as supported by the Northern Powerhouse of Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield cities.
Details of the A628 corridor upgrades
These are the piecemeal upgrade plans which will lead to demands for more upgrades rather than resolve the problems along the whole corridor:
- A new dual link road from the M67 roundabout at Hattersley to a new junction on the A57T on Mottram Moor, and a link to the Glossop Spur between Mottram Moor and the A57. These measures aim to free up the Longdendale bottleneck but will also open up the corridor for traffic to divert off the M62 and take the shorter journey. Local people who weren’t using their cars will use them and traffic jams will quickly return along with air pollution and traffic collisions.
- Between Tintwistle and Flouch traffic light cameras, speed cameras and message signs would clutter the route.
- The Hollingworth Tintwistle bypass would then be needed to alleviate these communities.
- Looking further ahead, Transport for the North is investigating a new dual carriageway between the M67 and the M18, joining the M1 in between. This would require a short tunnel under the Thurlstone Moors which would need to be delivered in several parts to stretch the costs over several funding periods.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic
The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.
The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.
The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.
For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
Rosatom obtained a license for the first land-based SMR in Russia
On April 21, Rosenergoatom obtained a license issued by Rostekhnadzor to construct the Yakutsk land-based SMR in the Ust-Yansky District of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
ROSATOM and FEDC agree to cooperate in the construction of Russia's first onshore SNPP
ROSATOM and FEDC have signed a cooperation agreement to build Russia's first onshore SNPP in Yakutia.
Rosatom develops nuclear fuel for modernized floating power units

Starbucks lowers guidance, promises new drinks and deals after customer traffic fell in weak Q2

Starbucks lowered expectations for its full-year sales and profit Tuesday after a disastrous quarter that saw a slowdown in store visits across the world.
The Seattle coffee giant said revenue for the January-March period dropped 2% to $8.56 billion. That was far short of Wall Street’s forecast of $9.12 billion, according to analysts polled by FactSet. It was the first time since the end of 2020 that the company saw a drop in quarterly revenue.
“Our performance this quarter was disappointing and did not meet our expectations,” Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan said during a conference call with investors. Shares in Starbucks Corp. tumbled 12% Tuesday in after-hours trading.
Starbucks said a mix of issues impacted sales. In the U.S., the company saw a sharper and faster decline in consumer confidence and spending than it had anticipated. The Conference Board, a business research group, said Tuesday that U.S. consumer confidence fell for the third straight month in April as consumers continue to confront elevated prices and high interest rates.
Bad weather also closed some U.S. stores briefly during the quarter, Starbucks said.
In China, Starbucks said the post-COVID recovery has been choppy, and it’s also seeing increasing price pressure from competitors.
Starbucks is also facing ongoing boycott of its stores for its perceived support of Israel in the war in Gaza. Customers in the Middle East and elsewhere began boycotting the brand in the fall after it sued Workers United , the union organizing its workers, over a pro-Palestinian message posted on a union social media account.
Starbucks has said that the lawsuit was aimed at stopping the union from using the company’s name and logo, which it says confuses customers. Starbucks and the union have paused the court case and are now in mediation. But the company has also taken steps to undo the damage. Last month, Starbucks donated $3 million to World Central Kitchen to provide food aid in Gaza.
Starbucks said its same-store sales — or sales at stores open at least a year — dropped 4% in its fiscal second quarter. Wall Street had expected a 1% increase, according to analysts polled by FactSet.
In the U.S., customers spent more per visit, but that wasn’t enough to overcome a 7% decline in transactions. In China, the company’s second-largest market, same-store sales plunged 11%.
Starbucks said it now expects full-year same-store sales to be flat or fall by single-digit percentages, down from growth of 4% to 6%. It also said it expects full-year revenue growth in the low single-digit range, down from 7% to 10%. It’s also forecasting flat to low-single digit earnings growth, down from 15% to 20%.
Narasimhan said Starbucks will try to boost U.S. store traffic this summer with new drinks, including the brand’s first energy beverage. Later this year Starbucks plans to introduce sugar-free customization options for most of its beverages, another effort to draw in customers.
After a successful pilot, the company plans to start offering overnight service in many markets, Narasimhan said. And it’s trying to improve product availability and service speed. Narasimhan said Starbucks lost some customers because of short supplies of its potato, cheddar and chive bakes after introducing them earlier this year.
Narasimhan also said Starbucks plans to open its Starbucks Rewards app to non-Rewards customers in July so they can take advantage of the deals it offers. Narasimhan said that change is aimed at occasional customers whose visits to Starbucks dropped off during the last quarter.
“In this environment, many customers are being more exacting about where and how they spend their money,” Narasimhan said. “We need to be able to reach and communicate with our customers in a way that demonstrates our value.”
Starbucks’ net income dropped 15% to $772.4 million, or 68 cents per share. Wall Street had expected an 80-cent per share profit.
Starbucks’ comments were echoed earlier Tuesday by McDonald’s , which also reported lower traffic in key markets like the U.S. and the United Kingdom as inflation-weary customers eat out less often. Like Starbucks, McDonald’s said it plans to boost deals and messaging about product value.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report
A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.
The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.
It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.
The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.
On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.
Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.
Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.
The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."
"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.
Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.
Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.
On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).
Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
