Wonderful roundtrip

It was a wonderful roundtrip at Namibia, Botswana and Simbabwe. Great lodges, best guide Nathan Africa and lots of unforgettable moments. Our guide made everything possible to make it a wonderful trip. We saw lots of animals on our game drives and we had a lot of fun.

Fantastic week in Namibia

Thank you to Africa-Experience for organizing a most wonderful, memorable tour through Namibia. The locations were spectacular, the lodges and their service excellent and made with so much love and respect for people and culture. Most importantly, we could not have asked for a better guide than Gottfried Ekandjo, who is extremely knowledgeable on any topic, forwardthinking, patient and an excellent driver. It will be hard to say Good bye to this beautiful country and its people tomorrow, but hopefully we will have the opportunity to return at some point in the future.

Twenty one days with Obi

We know southern Africa reasonably well but have never visited Namibia. Last autumn, we booked a private 21 day tour with Namibia Experience. The schedule was very capably managed by Dirk in their Operations department and included 13 (just right!) lodge stays around the route. He was always available and engaged immediately with the various queries we posed to him. The tour schedule and pricing offered was clearly set out and the booking process proceeded smoothly to completion. When we arrived in Namibia this February, we were met in Windhoek by Obi, our tour guide who delivered the tour, travelling 5,000 km in total in a big loop around the “must see” locations in the central parts of the country. His demeanour is unfailingly pleasant and humorous and his timekeeping is immaculate. He speaks six languages and switches effortlessly between them. On both tar and gravel roads, his superb driving and car control was everything that we, as nervous passengers, could have wished for! Added to that, he seemed to have the whole route in his head. We never saw him look at a map in those 3 weeks and he navigated his way everywhere unerringly, many times through unsignposted byways, short cuts and dry sandy river beds! On game drives, he displayed his tracking, eagle-eyed visual and identification skills; one day he was locating and affording us a close view of rare desert elephants. and another day picking out animals and birds in the landscape usually in the very far distance (often on the horizon!) and giving us knowledgeable and detailed commentaries. A truly remarkably skilled and accomplished guide, who we consider ourselves beyond fortunate to have been paired with.

Amazing Safari/Grandioses Safari Erlebnis

We just finished a Safari through Kenia including Samburu National Park, Solio Game Reserve, Massai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo West and we are absolutely stunned by this amazing experience. Our guide Simon was an absolute asset throughout our journey and we had amazing sightings with enough time to enjoy Kenya's wildlife. Simon has an amazing knowledge of Kenya's wildlife as well as its nature parks. We will definitely be back to enjoy more of this amazing nature here in Kenya and will always book again with Kenya experience and will also ask for Simon as our guide. Really the highlights of Namibia

We had the most amazing 13 days doing the Namibia highlights comfort tour with Sam. He knows everything about his country and is very happy to share his knowledge with anybody who is interested. He knows the best spots to get the whole Namibian Experience and never gets tired to stop at the perfect foto motives or to answer our questions. Excelent experience

We just did a 10-day trip through Namibia, the whole trip was very well organized, the transfers by land, by plane and the accommodations were first class. The guide who accompanied us for the first part, Steve Brown, was a very good travel companion, he explained everything we needed and made the trip by land very pleasant and easy. Amazing Adventure!

We did a 5 day Game Drive with Witson and were completely delighted with the experience. Witson is clearly very knowledgeable about the animals, region, and culture. He made sure that we had good vantage points to see the animals and educated us about them. He is a very capable driver and we felt safe at all times. The accommodations were varied (tent camps or lodge) but were all excellent; comfortable, in scenic locations, warm, welcoming staff, & great food. We highly recommend Witson & Africa-Experience for a Tanzanian Safari.

Fantastic tour through Kenya

Our whole tour in Kenya was fantastic: from the Aberdares up to Point Lenana on Mt. Kenya, then on safari to Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo West. Our guides during this trip were exceptional, a very big thank you goes to Ramos, Samson, including his whole crew, and to Simon for their knowledge, humour and thoughtful as well as highly competent handling of everything. Best Safari we could have imagined

Our 8-day safari through Kenya with our guide Emanuel will remain in our memories forever. We had really nice accommodations and could visit three different national parks in the 8 days, which allowed us to get a lot of impressions. Emanuel was the best driver we could have imagined. He was very friendly and pleasant. His German is really good. Through him we learned a lot about the animals, the plants and also the culture in Kenya. All in all it was an unforgettable and wonderful trip, where the fun never came too short :-). We would book again in exactly the same way. A clear recommendation!! Best Trip Ever

From the time I walked out the door of the airport in Nairobi, to the time I was dropped off at the resort in Mombasa, every step of my trip was handled flawlessly. The camps and lodges where I stayed were absolutely wonderful. The support team for the Mount Kenya trekking was likewise fabulous (and they got me to the top of Point Lenana). And then, the driver/guide for the safari was first rate, too (and a fount of information for all sorts of things besides wildlife). If I ever get the chance to go back to Africa, these are the people I'm calling first.

Wonderful Safari in Kenya

We spent wonderful days in Kenya. Thanks to our guide Simon, we not only saw a lot of animals, but also learned a lot about the locals and life in Kenya. We can highly recommend a tour with Simon and Anna (his Landcruiser)! Everything was always very well organized, also the transfers from the airport to the hotel and back worked out very well and all drivers were always on time and very nice. We enjoyed a great time in Kenya

We enjoyed a great time in Kenya. Our journey was perfectly organized, including the wonderful lodges with best service. Starting in Nairobi, we spent most of the time in the Masai Mara NP. Our guide Manuu, with amazing knowledge of the animals and an unbelievable ability and experience in spotting animals was the essential factor of our wonderful holiday. He is a very good and safe driver and highly empathic. While he answered all our questions we could feel his enthusiasm for nature and for his work. We enjoyed every minute of the safari. We had a great time in Kenya

We had a great time in Kenya. Starting from Nairobi we went to different National Parks together with our guide Simon. He was not only able to show us many spectacular animals, he also could tell us a lot about them. And not only like the normal ones, his eyes spotted many special things our eyes would have missed. So we learned a lot about the different animals, plants and landscapes. But not to forget Simon is a professional and always kind guy who almost felt like family at the end of our trip. Also, the whole trip was perfectly organized and our accommodations were always really nice. Namibia Guided Lodge Tour - Incredible!

What an amazing introduction to Sub-Saharan African! Obi, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of his country: animals, of course, including ornithology, botany, the creepy crawly things, history of the country, ethnic tribes etc He has a dry sense of humor with a deep belly laugh! And laugh did we! Obi went above and beyond the scheduled itinerary: when the majority of the group wanted to continue tracking desert elephants, we did so more than the scheduled morning time but into the afternoon. This is a full on trip with often barely an hour between the arrival time at the lodge and the scheduled sunset drive or dinner. Do not book any extra activities ahead of time as it is best to see what the on-site offerings are. The lodges were very good with friendly personnel and good food - some are amazing!There is a lot of space in Namibia so for the most part, the cabins are large. Your encounters with the wildlife will be unforgettable! Obi is an excellent ambassador for his country and you will return enthralled with all Namibia has to offer!

The best Safari ever!

We had a Safari in Kenya with Emmanuel. It was the best vacation we ever had. Emmanuel is such a nice guy, he always wanted us to be happy, even it tooks a long time and much kilometers to see a rhino or a leopard he made it possible for us. Emmanuel also has a huge knowledge about the animals and Kenya. We are looking forward to see him again… maybe in Tanzania.

Point Lenana - Great Experiance

Perfect Safari Experience

The safari to Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo West was truly one of the most amazing experiences while traveling that we have done so far. First of all, it was very well organized. Beginning with the pick up at the airport, ending with the drop off at our next destination at Diani Beach. They helped us organizing our trip and shared with us their experience in traveling Kenya. The hotels and lodges in the national Parks were exceptional. The safaris itself were very exciting. Our guide Simon seemed to know everything about the parks, where to find the animals and the best spots for photos. He knew every animal, every bird and could tell us a lot of background about the game and the parks and also the people who live there. He was fantastic. We can recommend strongly booking your safari with Africa Experience and especially with Kenya Experience.

Lifetime experience: Best of Kenya

We booked the eight day Safari „Best of Kenya“ with Elefant-Tours and Kenya experience managed the tour at the local level. Fortunately we had Emanual as a driver and guide. He is a very nice guy, always trying to give his best. While driving along on bumpy roads he shared his deep knowledge about the animals, plants and the local people in well spoken German. He did not give up searchng till we all had seen the Big 5. We had an easy going time with him and our fellow companions which turned the whole safari into a very pleasant trip. Always friendly staff served delicious food and the accommodation in tented camps was more comfortable than expected. All that made the trip an exceptional good experience. It was a really great time. One point with room for improvement: The lunch boxes of the Base camp in Masai Mara could need a bit more creativity. 3 times in the row chicken wings ask for little change. Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.

13- Day Uganda Expedition: Experience Moments with Gorillas, Wildlife and Cultural Experiences ( Private tour)

We booked a trip of 12 days with Mukisa Safaris. Our main interest was to the gorillas and the Big 5 of Africa but we experience and learnt more than we anticipated. At the time of booking, we read extensively and basing on the previous reviews that had been posted about Mukisa Safaris, we opted to book with them. I find it pertinent to say that the reviews clearly represent the way Mukisa Safaris organizes safaris. I liked the way Richard responded to our many questions and the fact that he was very open and disclosed to us everything we needed to know and what we didn’t know very important for the success of our trip. We really liked the lodges that were recommended to us especially in Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi National parks. We felt that we were immersed in nature and apart from our usual crazy busy life. The team at Mukisa Safaris ensured that we traveled safely and much appreciation to our driver John and our guide Hamidah who made out holiday very interesting and memorable. Great experiences in the National Park We had a super great, well organized two weeks in the Serengeti National Park, as well as in the Ngorogoro Crater. We were picked up on time at the airport in Arusha at the very beginning and had perfect service from then on. We were together with Jerome D. Swai and the driver Cypiars which both can only be recommended. Jerome cooks wonderful food!!! We did a trip in tents, was just great the feeling to be so close to the wild nature. They have experienced safari guides and staffs are best in the industry.

In essence it’s a tough pick for the best safari companies as best is relative and times change. Moreover, companies evolve for better and unfortunately others for worse. There are also local based companies that have competence and overall good service.

This is not a definitive, or updated list of the world’s ”best” safari companies. I think A&K should surely make the proper list, along with & Beyond. But someone has rightfully pointed out that these companies are quite expensive. A few years ago, I enjoyed a fabulous African Safari in Kenya with Shoor Safaris ( http://www.shoortravel.com/ ) at much cheaper rates using the same properties I was being offered by a top US operator. So do shop around and book wisely.

Based on the dates you posted the article, that was true but now things have really changed. Those tour companies that are not keeping up with the advancement of technology especially online marketing are being overtaken by smaller operators who have invested heavily in online marketing.

Most of the companies listed above are very expensive. I found a newer tour operator based in the US that runs their trips out of an office in Tanzania. They where almost half the price of the quote I got from Micato and 35% less than Thomsons. Our trip was great. I guess that the others charge more because they have a name. Anyway, check them out and see if they can do your trip cheaper http://www.etripafrica.com .

Good Safari.

I have gone through the list of safari companies listed and while it is true that they do offer great services, I am not sure that they are the top 10. There are a number of companies operating regionally and internationally that offer just as good or better services.

Another thing is there are some good companies who have had their names sullied by one disgruntled client over the most minor issue. Tour guides are humans and something like a flat tire is something that is sometimes unavoidable. However, some clients since they book these tours way in advance a few things could have happened in the months leading up to the safari making them wish they hadn’t booked. Take the world economic crisis, a client books his safari one or two years in advance only to lose a job. So reviews by clients should be taken in totality not from one disgruntled client.

I have seen the list of the top 10 safari companies doing safaris in Africa. In Uganda you have listed Volcanoes only. There is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Advantage Safaris ltd, website http://www.advantage-safaris.com . They organize the best birdwatching, gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking and family holidays in both Uganda and Rwanda. The guides and safari drivers employed by Advantage Safaris ltd are the best in the industry.

All safari goers should be a little wary of the ‘group style’ safaris on offer. Remember that you are trying to get close to wildlife and be sensitive as well as be educated. Larger groups, of say 16 people or more, in numerous vehicles can find this a little difficult. Large groups are often led by ‘an expert’ with driver/guides in the other vehicles. Whilst this keeps the cost per head down some the overall ‘life time experience ‘ can get a little diluted by sharing one so called ‘expert’ between 16-20 group members.

Tanzania is a wonderful safari destination but you cannot beat a small group of up to 8 visitors being guided by two excellent guides in two well equipped vehicles. Guides that know the back roads and want to explore.

Camp in remote locations, don’t be surrounded by cement in a lodge. It costs more but these basic rules can get a visitor closer to that dream vacation.

I agree that it is impossible to limit the world’s best safari companies down to a list of 10, especially when each safari company is focused on a different region and/or type of trip (adventure, family, honeymoon, luxury, etc.). In many cases it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

Thanks for the feedback, you definitely have a point here. Of course, they can't possibly make a "real" top 10 out of the thousands of safari companies out there. But then again, how would you do it? Did you check out their methodology? Basically, it is based on surveys that follow specific categories: education, sustainability, quality of service and spirit of adventure.

About the "trip of a lifetime" experience. This goal should always be on top of the list, totally agree with you. The question is: are they all going for it? I don't think so. I have read a few stories where people were really not well catered for. In my opinion, there are always companies out there that are looking for a quick buck no matter what… even if it has to be at the expense of their clients.

Not quite sure what you're trying to imply about the recession bit. Did you read that? Possible but am not aware of it.

Interesting topic that is being discussed here. I must say though that the premise of NG a bit of an awkward one is. 'Delivering a trip of a lifetime the first time'?? In my opinion a safari outfitter should ALWAYS try to achieve this goal the first time. Now NG suggests that there are a number of operators out there that are not doing their utmost to accommodate clients the first time and that they will only do so in times of recession.

I therefore dare to say that this survey is absolute nonsense, as NG will not have the possibility to survey 100's of operators. Why? Because they have other things to do than being a consumer watchdog on safaris. I am not implying that the mentioned companies are no good, I am just saying that out of all the thousands of companies selling safaris, you can not just make a list of 10.

Hi to both Stella and Robin! Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond to your messages. I want to echo what Jane said in her text and to thank you for what certainly was a “bucket list” experience. I, like Jane, have enjoyed relating to friends and family what a fabulous trip this was.

At times now that I’ve returned to “life as I know it”, I pinch myself in wonder! Was I really there? Then I look at my pictures (Yes, Jane, I am going through them! We need a date to get together to share photos! And we want some of Robin’s also!) and remind myself of the wonder of it all. I really WAS there!

People ask me for a favorite moment or what stands out as the most amazing thing I saw. I am hard pressed to narrow it down to just a single experience or sight. To a person, the people we met all along the way left such positive impressions in my head and heart. And for me the time spent on the drives as we searched for animals was nothing short of magical.
