15 Best Asia destinations in November of 2023 from cheapest to most expensive

November is an excellent time to visit Asia if you can because so many of the best destinations have perfect weather along with small crowds and amazingly low hotel rates. Most of the places on the list below have a pretty dramatic rainy season that typically ends early in November if not in late October, but the big crowds don’t start arriving until the middle of December, which makes for an ideal situation.

Those with two or more weeks in November should consider flying into Bangkok and then visiting at least 3 or 4 of the popular nearby destinations. You’ll be able to find really nice hotels starting well under $50 per night for two people including tax in many wonderful cities. The list below includes a collection of great shopping and eating cities along with islands and beach areas, so it’s wise to mix and match if you have the time available.

This year we’ve ranked each destination from cheapest to most expensive so you can easily make a budget at a glance. If you are looking for cheaper destinations you’ll have many great choices at the top of our list where you can get a nice hotel room for way under US$50 per night. And if you’ve got more to spend you’ll find some amazing places including the Maldives where water villas start around US$300 per night and go WAY up from there. We use our Asia Backpacker Index for prices, which is a daily average of expenses for a budget traveler in each city.

Luang Prabang is a fantastic bargain considering how nice it is, and it’s one of the highlights of the whole region. You can get very nice hotels here for the price of a dorm bed in Amsterdam, and you can eat for a day for the price of a couple beers in most European cities. The hotel rates in 2023 are looking really appealing and you’ll be able to afford more than you probably expected.

Another interesting thing about Pokhara is that it’s one of the world’s cheapest cities for basic expenses such as hotels, food, and drinks. If you want to do a multi-day trek with a good outfitter that will cost quite a bit extra, but if you want to just chill in a lovely lakeside town it will cost almost nothing. Hotel prices in 2023 are looking pretty standard in that there are plenty of decent places that are very inexpensive and the nicer places are just a bit pricey by Asian standards.

This is a city to linger in for those on longer trips because it’s big enough to have everything and yet it’s not as crowded and frenetic as Bangkok or other larger cities. Aside from the dozens of large temples, Chiang Mai isn’t a particularly pretty place, but there are great outdoor activities and hikes all around so there is plenty to like about it. Monthly apartments are also so reasonable here that many expats spend months here while working online. They mostly live northwest of the city walls and moat, by the way.

Parts of Vietnam are still getting some rain in November so this may not be a perfect month to tour the whole country. But the two largest cities, including Ho Chi Minh City (below) are nice enough and you can get cheap flights between them. Hanoi is the cheaper of the two and many think it’s more interesting as well. The food in Hanoi is arguably some of the best in all of Asia, with French influences easy to spot within the more traditional Asian elements.

There is plenty to see and do in Delhi (and New Delhi at its heart), including the famous day trip to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal. Most of India has very nice weather in November so this is a perfect time for a longer visit. The fairly new metro system in Delhi is very impressive and the new airport also makes visiting easier.

This is a very large and busy city that is quite a bit more spread out than Hanoi. Hotels in the central area are also more expensive, but it’s still probably worth staying in the center because getting around is not terribly easy unless you are comfortable riding pillion on a motorbike behind a local who speaks basically zero English.

Hotel deals in Bangkok in November are also very appealing, and you can probably afford a much nicer place than you thought. It’s even reasonably cool (relatively speaking) in the evening this time of year, so wandering the night markets is more enjoyable than it is during the hot months. Hotel rates for November of 2023 are looking extremely cheap even compared to the last few years. It’s a buyer’s market and you’ll be able to afford at least one or two stars more than you probably assumed.

Since the crowds are small in November you can get fantastic deals on hotels here. During the prime months the better beach resorts here can feel somewhat pricey, but in November you can get some of those same places for much less. Bali was really hurt by the pandemic and things are still not back to normal, so hotel prices are much lower in 2023 than they were in 2019. Even more than with the cities above, the beach crowds don’t usually arrive in Phuket until Christmas or so. This means that this is probably the best time of year to visit, with nearly perfect weather and small crowds even on the popular beaches. It’s worth noting that the cheap hotel prices listed just below are real, but they are for smaller family-run places. You may have heard that Hong Kong is now one of the world’s most expensive cities, and in some ways that’s true, especially if you want to buy or rent a luxury apartment. But for hotels you can still get pretty good deals even for places that are well located. And if you follow the local workers into the noodle shops and such, you can eat pretty cheaply and authentically as well.

Hong Kong has changed in the last few years as the mainland authorities are keeping a close eye on everything and dissent is no longer tolerated. As to whether this makes Hong Kong less fun to visit is an open question. Hotels are looking cheaper in 2023 compared to recent years, although still fairly expensive for Asia.

Traveling to Asia in November

asia travel november

When planning a trip to Asia in November considering the weather and what's going on in the countries you want to visit are both important parts of that process.

November typically marks the transition out of monsoon season, bringing drier weather to much of Southeast Asia. While popular destinations such as Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam are just beginning to enter the cool and dry busy season, China , Japan, and the rest of East Asia are already dealing with cold weather. Snow may already be blanketing the tops of mountains.

Even though prices in countries like Thailand will already begin going up in anticipation of the busy season, November is a good time to travel because it's considered a shoulder season. Be aware that crowds surge around Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year.

Meanwhile, things get way more quiet in Bali . The many Australian travelers who frequent Bali are enjoying the warmer and calmer weather at home in the Southern Hemisphere.

So, there are still many places to find sunshine around Asia in November. Add in experiencing one of the exciting festivals taking place in November and the adjacent months and you'll find that fall is a great time to travel in Asia .

Festivals and Holidays

Many festivals and holidays in Asia are based on the lunisolar calendar, so dates can change from year to year.

Here are a few of the big fall events that often take place in November:

  • Diwali in India: Also spelled " Deepavali ," the five-day Hindu Festival of Lights is stunningly beautiful. Dates change every year, but Diwali is usually celebrated between October and December. Diwali is celebrated by people in India , Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, and other places with large Hindu populations.
  • Although seeing the lights, lanterns, and fireworks associated with Diwali is unforgettable, traveling during the holiday can be daunting due to the crowds that gather. Transportation bogs down as millions of people travel to celebrate and visit family members in other parts of the country.
  • Pushkar Camel Fair in India: Whether you're into camels or not, the Pushkar Camel Fair attracts a lot of people and animals. It's the busiest but most exciting time to travel in Rajasthan , India's desert state. You'll wear out your camera at this colorful five-day event held sometime in October and November.
  • Loi Krathong in Thailand: Loi Krathong, along with Yi Peng , is one of the most visually mesmerizing festivals in Asia. Thousands of candle-powered lanterns fill the sky along with fireworks while krathongs (small candlelit boats) are floated on rivers. Chiang Mai, or elsewhere in northern Thailand, is the place to be. Dates vary but Loi Krathong is most often observed in November. The festive holiday is a favorite for locals and travelers alike and so accommodations and transportation will be crowded in Chiang Mai, the epicenter of the festival.
  • Thailand Full Moon Party: The monthly party held at Haad Rin on the island of Koh Phangan is a legend. Don't go near the event unless you're willing to join the all-night dancing fun. Parties aren't always on the exact night of the full moon because of many Buddhist holidays that coincide, so check Full Moon Party dates  before you go.
  • International Film Festival in Goa, India: This annual event is sometimes in November or December. The festival is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia.

Weather varies greatly throughout southeast Asia. November marks the official start of the dry and busy season in Thailand and neighboring countries. The number of rainy days drops off sharply after October. Good weather and the tourist season begins in Sri Lanka as well. But as those countries get better weather, things get wet and seas get rough in Bali and parts of Malaysia. So it's important to do some prior planning.

These destinations have great weather in November:

  • Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand
  • Koh Samet and Koh Chang in Thailand
  • Vietnam (temperatures in Hanoi will feel cool but rain slows)
  • Langkawi Island in Malaysia (some rain)
  • Sri Lanka (particularly the beaches in the south)
  • Rajasthan in India
  • Mumbai and New Delhi
  • Kathmandu (although the Himalayas will have a lot of snow)

One popular destination that has especially widely varied weather patterns in Thailand. While some parts of Thailand are receiving less and less rainfall throughout November, some islands have their own microclimates. The rain dies down severely in Bangkok and Chiang Mai during the month of November. With cooler temperatures and far fewer thunderstorms, November is an excellent time to visit before the crowds pour in for the busy season.

Koh Chang and Koh Samet, both close to Bangkok, enjoy excellent weather in November while Koh Samui and Koh Phangan often receive the most rainfall in November. Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe on the Andaman (west) side of Thailand don't dry up until around December. Phuket and Koh Lanta, although nearby to the other islands are often exceptions with good weather in November. Storms hit sporadically.

You might want to avoid these places in November if you're looking for great travel weather:

  • Northern parts of China
  • Bali (rain every other day)
  • Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia (lots of rain)
  • Perhentian Islands in Malaysia (rough seas and business closures)
  • Tioman Island in Malaysia
  • Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in Thailand
  • Singapore (weather is usually consistent throughout the year, however, the wettest months are between November and January)

Fall foliage in East Asia may still be clinging in southern areas, however, cold weather and snow will already be slowing down business in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas. Some roads and mountain passes in places such as Nepal become impassible.

November In Asia: 17 Gorgeous Locations To Add To Your List

Wow! I can’t believe that we have reached November in Asia. This season of blog posts was just a random inspiration that I had one day. You see, people kept asking what the best season is to visit which place.

Most of the questions were centered around Asia since that was where I have travelled the most. I can understand where everyone is coming from. You want to be everywhere at once, but you also really want to pick the right season to visit the place.

The decision is never easy. Luckily for me, I have been in touch with a lot of travel bloggers who adore travelling in Asia.

Time after time, they haven’t let me down and have shown me parts of the continent that I am itching to head to! Let’s take a look at what November in Asia has in store for us shall we?

Weather in november in asia.

November in Asia sees crazy fluctuations in weather across the continent. Think of it this way. The coldest regions are up north. So Russia, China, Mongolia and the other countries on that belt are blanketed with snow. The mid range countries are cold to cool.

Vietnam for example could see snow in Sapa (though that is more likely in Dec-Jan). Otherwise these places tend to be warm in the day and cold in the nights. Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have the perfect climate.

The diversity in the climate allows you to choose what you want to do. What I mean is you could choose warm luxurious beaches or snow related activities and anything in between!

Cambodia is one of those destinations that is really hard to forget for so many reasons. It has a history that full of horror and yet it has a landscape that is as gorgeous as it as it gets.  Cambodia is one of the countries that has made it onto our list of places to spend November in Asia.

1. Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a great place to spend November in Asia.

Siem Reap is a great place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Siem Reap  is located in the west of Cambodia, around 270 miles from the border with Thailand and 200 miles from Phnom Penh.

GETTING THERE: Travelers can reach Siem Reap directly via international flights can connect via flights from Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Hanoi (and other Asian cities), or can travel by bus from nearby Asian destinations such as Bangkok, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Kampot.

WHERE TO STAY: There are loads of great options of where to stay in Siem Reap and where you choose depends on your budget. The Royal Angkor Resort is a wonderful hotel that offers an oasis of calm in the city. The hotel features 5-star rooms, lush hotel grounds, and an on-site swimming pool and restaurant.

Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor Wat, an incredible archaeological site that features an array of temples that have stood here for over a millennium. From the grand Angkor Wat itself to other famed temples such as Ta Prom and Bayon, this site has easily enough to keep you entertained for two days!

When visiting this impressive site, you’ll be amazed at the incredible structures that were built here so long ago and can really envision what this would have been like as an ancient civilization.

Elsewhere in Siem Reap, there are more modern temples, bustling markets, tasty restaurants, and lively bars to discover. Siem Reap is famed for the aptly-named Bar Street, a fun nightlife spot that features cheap drinks and dancing until the early hours.

As you would expect of a large Asian city, Siem Reap is packed with cultural attractions, quality shopping, sumptuous spas, and an excellent selection of local and international eateries. There is therefore something for every type of traveler to enjoy.

Siem Reap is a wonderful destination year-round, so it makes a great place to escape to during November. No matter whether you spend 5 days in Cambodia or a month, you will always find more than enough to do and Siem Reap is one place that absolutely should be on your list!

Boasting warm temperatures and nine hours of sunshine a day you’ll be able to enjoy the city, but you’ll want to pack a waterproof as Siem Reap does sometimes feature a heavy afternoon downpour.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to book your ticket to Angkor Wat online . That way you can skip the lines and head to all the locations without wasting time.

China has been on my bucket list ever since I was a little girl. Somehow, I have never managed to make it to the country yet.

China is a great place to spend November in Asia even though the temperatures drop markedly at this time of the year. Take a look at the locations that travel bloggers have suggested adding to your list.

Xian in China is a not a very well known destination that is great to spend November in Asia.

Xian in China is a not a very well known destination that is great to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION:  Xian

GETTING THERE:  Xian is located over 1,000km away from the capital Beijing. The quickest way to get there is by a flight from Beijing, Shanghai, or another major transiting terminal. Alternatively, you can catch a bullet train. These are two great options to choose between.

WHERE TO STAY:  Xian is an ancient walled city and most of the attractions are within the walls. For this reason, I would choose to stay in the middle of the city, near the Bell Tower.

Xian is a remarkable city with so much to see and do. With the introduction of the subway, it makes visiting the attractions quicker and easier. Although it is quite an easily walkable city.

One of the most popular attractions in Xian is the ancient city wall. It was built in the 14 th  century and is the oldest in China. The Xian Wall has been refurbished over the years, so you are able to either walk or ride around the top of it. It gives tourists a unique perspective on the city as you are looking at everything from above.

The next popular attraction is the Bell Tower, which stands proudly in the middle of the city. This is lit up spectacularly at night. Close to the Bell Tower is the Drum Tower which has the largest drum skin in the world.

Xian also has the oldest and largest mosque. The Great Mosque of Xian was built in the 8 th  century. This is located in the Muslim Quarter in Xian. When you’re in the Muslim Quarter, make sure you pick up a roujiamo, which is a Chinese hamburger. So delicious.

Probably the most visited site in Xian would have to be the Terracotta Army. While this site is quite a distance outside the city walls, Xian is the closest city.

The Terracotta Army is a UNESCO World Heritage site that contains over 8,000 terracotta soldiers and other army personnel in buried pits. The army is a sight to behold and it is worth the visit to Xian just to see this.

India is an intriguing country and it features on almost all our lists. Wonder why? Well, the country is huge, and it has a diverse landscape. From deserts to snow capped mountains, from plateaus to beaches and forests.

This means that the climate varies, and you can find the perfect spot to visit at almost any time in the year. Makes sense that it is featured in our list of places to spend November in Asia, right?

3. Darjeeling

Darjeeling is a gorgeous place in India that is perfect to spend November in Asia.

Darjeeling is a gorgeous place in India that is perfect to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Darjeeling is located in the state of West Bengal in India and is at a distance of about 615 kilometres from Kolkata.

GETTING THERE: The nearest airport to Darjeeling is about 65 kilometres away at Bagdogra, which has flights from various cities in India. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri at a distance of about 70 kilometres and is connected with major cities of India. One can hire a taxi to Darjeeling from both Bagdogra and New Jalpaiguri.

WHERE TO STAY: Muscatel Bhumsang is a 3-star hotel with a nice location and an outdoor pool and comfortable rooms.

Darjeeling is a picturesque hill station in India that is synonymous with one of its famous products, tea! The magic shrub makes its presence felt everywhere in Darjeeling, in tantalizingly sloping rows upon rows of tea plantations that grow the famous black tea of Darjeeling.

Darjeeling has a fairy-tale quality and an old-world charm that dates back to the times of the British Raj in India when it was developed as a mountain getaway.

For many Darjeeling at an elevation of 6700 feet in the Lower Himalayas is an escape from the heat of the plains. But the place assumes its fairy-tale charm in the winters when the nip in the air tinged with the fragrance of tea spins a web of irresistible charm.

There are many reasons to visit Darjeeling and one of the most endearing is the view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and possibly even Mt. Everest on a clear day. Sunrise at Tiger Hill is an ethereal experience, as the first rays of the sun caress the snow-clad Himalayan peaks.

The fairy tale setting of Darjeeling is complete with the presence of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which has a narrow-gauge train running through it. The train dates back to the late 19th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A ride on the cute little ‘toy train’, is a beautiful experience.

The mystical mountainous aura of Darjeeling is heightened by the presence of Buddhist monasteries, the prominent one being the Ghoom Monastery. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute where Tenzing Norgay was the first Director is a place one must visit when in Darjeeling.

No visit to Darjeeling would be complete without tasting its famed tea or visiting its tea gardens. The haunting fragrance of Darjeeling stays with you long after you have left it.

There are tonnes of interesting things to do in Hampi. You can experience local festivities and culture at the Virupaksha Temple, listen to the musical pillars of the  Vijaya Vittala Temple  (one of the most iconic attractions of Hampi), wander through a delicately-designed Lotus Mahal within the royal enclosures, or go bouldering if you are feeling adventurous.

If you are looking for something unique, try the coracle ride on Tungabhadra – definitely one of the most exciting experiences to have in Hampi.

In November, Hampi experiences a dry season and starts cooling down. Temperatures are lower than in summers and ideal for you to go out and explore. A cool breeze blows through the Tungabhadra which makes a walk by the river extremely pleasant.

It is ideal to spend 3-4 days in Hampi so that you can experience the beauty and history of this place to the fullest.

Sikkim is a great place to spend November in Asia.

Sikkim is a great place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: A mountainous State of India tucked in the lap of the Himalayas. On map, it is on the North Eastern side of India, landlocked by Nepal, China, Bhutan and West Bengal (Indian State).

GETTING THERE: One can deboard at Bagdogra (IXU), West Bengal or Pakyong (PYG), Sikkim. Direct international flights are unlikely to be available. The nearest International Airport is Kolkata (CCU), where domestic flights are available to IXU and PYG.

One can avail trains to New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) too and reserve a car from there. In case you are deboarding at IXU, you need to get a car to Gangtok.

WHERE TO STAY: Plenty homestays are available on AirBnB and Booking.com.

Bodhi Villa (West Sikkim), Eshab Honestly (West Sikkim), Mt. Narsing Village Resort (South Sikkim), Sonam Palgye and Hotel Mandala (Gangtok) are few of my top choices.

Sikkim will always be close to my heart. Ask me why? Because Sikkim was my first encounter with the mountains. The ones festooned with snow. While I visited it in the month of the monsoons, I had to wait till mid-October to get hold of the beautiful side of the State.

The first week of November is a good time to visit the Northern district. The first ten days are the best. The snow starts accumulating and the winter ballasts hurl in.

The Eastern district also emancipates the same nippy chills through the high-altitude villages of Zuluk and Gnathang valley. The Western and Southern district are draped in a different color by and large. An azure sky prevails through these districts with a clear view of the mountain range in the skyline.

This is not quite the view for the rest of the year, which is likely to be under the cloudy floats.

And the cherry blossoms burgeon through most of the greeneries. Come November and cherry blossoms are the pièce de résistance here. The majestic Kanchendzonga serenades the corridors of West Sikkim in an impeccably snow-covered view. In November Sikkim does become the Library of Nature’s handpicked Novels.

Varanasi is a popular place in India to spend November in Asia.

Varanasi is a popular place in India to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Varanasi

GETTING THERE: You can either fly to Varanasi or take a train from other major cities in India like Delhi or Calcutta

WHERE TO STAY : Zostel hostel Varanasi

Varanasi is one of India’s most holy cities with its location on the sacred Ganges river. It is also one of the oldest. Varanasi was already mentioned as the city of Lord Shiva in ancient Hindu books like the Vedas and it was the capital of several Indian kingdoms.

For Hindus, Varanasi still holds an important religious significance. They believe that if they are cremated at the ghats of the Ganges river in Varanasi their soul will be released from the cycle of rebirth.

But it is not just death that people come to Varanasi for. People also come to seek their blessings for other major life events like marriage and a newborn child.

Therefore, the ghats in Varanasi are like an open-air temple where prayers and rituals are going on day and night. The ghats were built in the 18th century and a walk among the ghats is one of the best ways to see Varanasi. However, the narrow back alleys behind the ghats have their own charm with colourful houses and hidden temples.

November is a great time to visit Varanasi. Temperatures are pleasant and it’s also festival season. Diwali is celebrated throughout India in late October, but Varanasi celebrates it twice. 15 days after Diwali, Varanasi celebrates Dev Deepavali when the gods are believed to take a dip in the river.

Indonesia has a certain charm that most people find particularly irresistible. Bali in particular lures tourists in by the troves. While we have made multiple trips to the country, we still feel as if we haven’t explored it properly. There is just so much to see. If you are looking for a rather exotic spot to spend November in Asia, consider Indonesia.

Bali has so many gorgeous spots to visit and it is considered one of the most popular destinations to spend November in Asia.

Bali has so many gorgeous spots to visit and it is considered one of the most popular destinations to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Bali

GETTING THERE: Bali is an island and the easiest way to get there is by plane. Denpasar International Airport is well-connected and there are many flights arriving daily. There are also a number of ferry routes to Bali, from Lombok, the Gili Islands and also from Java.

WHERE TO STAY: For very special occasions such as a honeymoon or wedding anniversary: the luxurious Watermark Hotel . For surfers and yoga lovers: the Chillhouse in Canggu and for budget travelers: Wisna House in Sanur

While Bali is definitely not an off-the-beaten-path destination, Bali is a dream destination for all kinds of travellers. There are tropical beaches, beautiful temples, lush jungle with hidden waterfalls and delicious food.

While it’s hard to narrow down a feasible  Bali itinerary , as there is so much to see and do, some of the best places to visit are:

Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida

Getting to these neighboring islands from Bali requires a boat ride from Sanur , but it’s definitely worthwhile to spend a couple of nights on one of these islands (there is more accommodation available on Lembongan).

Go scuba diving to spot the famous manta rays and molas or rent a scooter to explore Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach on beautiful Nusa Penida.

Ubud and Sebatu

While Ubud is the famous name here, Sebatu is a lovely village close to Ubud that’s virtually undiscovered. Here you can see Bali life as it used to be, and still is in those hidden pockets where tourists don’t visit.

Rent a scooter and drive through endless rice fields. Head north and admire impressive Mount Batur and Mount Agung. Get off the main road and find hidden waterfalls, perfect for a swim. The possibilities are endless in the lush green interior of Bali.

Canngu is the place to be for surfing. If you are an experienced surfer, ride the waves and marvel at the beautiful scenery. If you have never surfed before, take a class and learn the basics.

Canggu also has many yoga studios as well as lots of great restaurants and bars. Altogether, it’s a great place to relax and to meet other travellers.

8. Komodo Islands

The Komodo islands are an exotic place to spend November in Asia.

The Komodo islands are an exotic place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Komodo, Indonesia

GETTING THERE: You will need to get to Labuan Bajo first (you can do this either by flight or boat). From Labuan Bajo, you can get to Komodo via boat — there are plenty of local companies offering overnight boat tours that take you to all the best spots in Komodo.

WHERE TO STAY: I highly recommend staying on board a boat tour. It’s the best way to explore everything the island has to offer. The boat tours typically include all meals and snorkelling equipment too, and you can find plenty of cheap ones if you arrange them at the local tour offices (rather than booking them in advance!)

Komodo is one of the most dreamy destinations in the world, and definitely an amazing idea for November in Asia. Filled with beaches and snorkelling spots, this archipelago is perfectly warm during that time of the year and is also not as crowded as the high season of the summer months.

This makes it an ideal November destination especially if you’re a fan of nature and water activities!

One of the most fantastic things to do in Komodo is to hike up to Padar Island for sunrise. The landscape views from the top are absolutely spectacular — it’s definitely one of the best viewpoints in the entire archipelago!

Be sure to also visit the Pink Beach; the sand there does indeed look pink thanks to the red pigment produced by microscopic animals. You can also go snorkeling there as there are gorgeous fishes in the water, and it’s a great place for drone photography as well.

For the clearest white sand beach, head over to Taka Makassar, which is another gorgeous great place for diving and snorkeling too. Lastly, be sure to stop by Manta Point to swim with some beautifully elegant manta rays! It’s truly the experience of a lifetime (and don’t forget your GoPro!).

Japan is one of those countries that we have always wanted to visit but somehow never reached. A country known for its food, culture, cherry blossoms, landscape and more holds a lot of appeal, doesn’t it?

In fact, I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about it from everyone who has visited. Luckily for us, Japan is also one of the best places to spend November in Asia.

Kyoto is a great place to spend November in Asia.

Kyoto is a great place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Kyoto, Japan

GETTING THERE: The nearest international airport is in Osaka, which is only a few minutes away by train if taking the fastest shinkansen bullet train. Kyoto is easily reached by train from my other cities in Japan.

WHERE TO STAY: Vegan Minshuku Sanbiki Neko

Kyoto is a magical place at any time of year, but it’s especially enchanting in November thanks to its spectacular autumn foliage.

Japan has some of the best foliage in the world, and locals and foreigners alike plan their trips carefully around catching the trees at the right time to see them in all their glory. Foliage season starts early in Hokkaido, the most northern province of Japan, and gradually works its way down through the rest of the country.

In Kyoto, the changing colours usually peak around the third week of November, although this varies a bit from year to year depending on climatic conditions. And even within the city, foliage can vary from one spot to another.

Hotels even keep maps in their lobbies that show whether the leaves are mostly green, yellow, orange or red at various Kyoto attractions.

Tsutenkyo Bridge, within the grounds of Tofuku-ji Temple, is one of the best spots for viewing the dark red maple leaves.

It’s not far from Vegan Minshuku Sanbiki Neko, a traditional Japanese guesthouse that’s very welcoming and serves some of the  best vegan food in Kyoto  for breakfast. While you’re in the area, also stop in at nearby Sokushū-in, which is equally beautiful but much quieter.

Tokyo is a simply amazing place to spend November in Asia.

Tokyo is a simply amazing place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION:  Tokyo

GETTING THERE:  As Japan’s capital and one of the world’s largest cities, getting to Tokyo is easy. Served by two international airports, Haneda and Narita, if you have a choice of which airport to fly into, always opt for Haneda as it is much closer to the city than Narita, which is approximately a two-hour bus ride from neighbouring Chiba prefecture.

WHERE TO STAY:  Although most first-time tourists to Tokyo gravitate towards staying in the Shinjuku area, local residents and those in the know realize that it’s not the most convenient of areas to stay in as Shinjuku Station is horrendously busy and notoriously difficult to navigate with more than 200 exits!

If possible, try to stay somewhere along the JR Yamanote Line which serves most of the major stations in the city in a circular loop.

If you are looking for an area with some nightlife then Shibuya is the ideal location, whilst travelers who prefer a more traditional neighbourhood should consider areas such as Ueno and Asakusa.

November is one of the best months of the year to visit Tokyo, not only can you see stunning autumn colours in the vibrant red maple trees and golden avenues of ginkgo leaves, but the city also turns into a magical winter wonderland with its many winter light displays, featuring impressive illuminations and special events.

Even if you are touring other parts of Japan during this time, be sure to spend at least  4 days in Tokyo .

I love Malaysia. We have been there so often and each time, we find new reasons to love the country more. Malaysia has a lot to offer. Gorgeous islands, delicious food, wildlife and mind-blowing cities. It is also a great place to spend November in Asia.

Penang is a fun place to spend November in Asia.

Penang is a fun place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Penang

GETTING THERE: Most visitors will arrive via a flight at the Penang International Airport. From the airport, take buses, taxis, or ride-sharing options, such as Grab, to get to your accommodations.

WHERE TO STAY: It’s recommended to stay around the historic George Town area as you’ll be close to the street art and street food.

If you want to experience a place with fewer tourists in November, head to Penang, Malaysia. It is considered the low season due to the rainy season. While you’ll experience off-and-on showers throughout the day, a little rain shouldn’t deter you from exploring this island. The weather is otherwise warm and humid.

Depending on your Malaysia itinerary, you’ll need a minimum of 2 days in Penang to explore. You’ll love spending time around George Town, the UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized historic area.

Try cheap and delicious street food , explore multi-cultural areas such as Little India, and find interactive street art. It’s fun to explore the small side streets to discover hidden and popular artwork such as the boy on a motorbike and boy and girl riding a bicycle together.

A fantastic escape from the main city area is to visit Penang Hill. It’s a tourist attraction area on top of a hill so you’ll get breath-taking views of the island and the waters. You can take either a cable car or hike to the summit. If you decide to hike, start early due to the humidity.

Penang Hill has several attractions such as the “Locks and Love” fence, Owl Museum, Earthquake and Typhoon Simulator, and more. If you have additional time, head to the beaches for relaxation time or Penang National Park for more hiking and nature sightseeing.

South Korea

South Korea is another destination that has become really popular lately. I was glad to see that it also made its way to our list of November in Asia. It is an intriguing country that has many gorgeous locations that are bucket list material. Take a look at what made it to our list.

12. Nami Island

Ever considered spending your November in Asia on Nami island?

Ever considered spending your November in Asia on Nami island?

LOCATION: Nami Island

GETTING THERE: From Seoul you can get to Nami island by subway, bus or tour bus. It takes around 1h 30 minutes.

WHERE TO STAY: There are loads of pensions around Nami Island which you can stay at but as Nami Island is pretty small, most people just go on a day trip from Seoul.

Nami Island is a small half moon shaped island located on the border of Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do Province. It is a popular day trip destination as the island was featured on many Korean dramas and in music videos with the most famous drama being ‘Winter Sonata’.

The most beautiful time to visit Nami Island is during autumn season (October, November) when all the leaves have turned golden. It is truly magnificent and a wonderful place to take pictures. Try to avoid visiting the island during weekends as it gets super packed.

To get to the island , you first have to get to Gapyeong Wharf, which you can get to by bus, subway or a tourist bus. Once you arrive at Gapyeong Wharf, you can reach the island by boat or by zipline. A return ticket by boat is 13$ and this also includes entrance to the island.

You can definitely spend a whole afternoon or day on the island as it is filled with some restaurants, cafes and even small museums. It’s a great place for families, couples or friends to go to.

13. Jirisan National Park

Jirisan National park is an intriguing place to spend November in Asia.

Jirisan National park is an intriguing place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION:  Jirisan National Park, South Korea

GETTING THERE:  Take a train from Seoul to Namsan and transfer to a local bus. Travelers from Busan should take a train to Hadong and transfer to a local bus. There are also tour buses that will take you directly there.

WHERE TO STAY:  You’ll find plenty of hotels that offer spacious accommodation and incredible views of the national park. Stay in   K Jirisan Family Hotel  if coming from Seoul. For an authentic Korean stay, check out Buchongol Pension or Hadong Olive Pension, which both provide a more homely stay and are situated within the park itself.

Jirisan National Park is one of the most incredible places to visit in November in Asia. Home to some of the tallest peaks in Korea, and one of the three ‘mountains of God’, you’ll certainly be impressed by the views here.

The name Jirisan means ‘even a fool becomes wise’ and you’d definitely make a wise choice by visiting here. Make sure you have a camera, a good pair of walking shoes, and get ready for an adventure in the best place to visit in November in Asia.

Korea’s largest national park is thickly populated with an array of magnificent trees showing off their fall foliage as November arrives . Witness star-shaped maple leaves shifting through green, to amber, and finally bright red.

There are plenty of other trees here also displaying their colorful wares in their final flourish. With plenty of dry, sunny days, getting into Korea’s nature is a must-do, and Jirisan is the epitome of late-autumn beauty.

There are plenty of options for experiencing these incredible sights no matter what level of exercise you want. Stroll around the outside of the park on one of the 16 tranquil trekking paths or brave the heights and head to the peaks.

You can do some of them in one day or spend the night at the top in a lodge and wake up early for a spectacular sunrise view.

Pass by gentle streams and waterfalls, ascend to cloud-covered peaks and look all the way out to the coast, meditate and marvel at ancient Buddhist temples, and experience some of Korea’s most amazing traditional foods.

I’d definitely recommend trying  haemul pajeon  (Korean seafood pancake) and  makgeolli  (Korean rice wine) – they’re the perfect combo after a pleasant day in the warm afternoon sun.

Seoul is a popular place to spend November in Asia.

Seoul is a popular place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Seoul

WHERE TO STAY: If you are staying in Seoul its two main palaces, Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, are also excellent places to see fall foliage. They will also be considerably less busy than at their peak times.

GETTING THERE: Seoul is the capital of Korea and   Incheon International Airport has many options for international flights both in and out of the country.

November is a wonderful time to visit Seoul South Korea. The days are cool – the high single digits in Celsius – but the sky is wonderfully clear and bright. The monsoons have finished and the air is dry rather than humid, making it a much more comfortable temperature for exploring South Korea’s capital.

If you are visiting Seoul in early November, you may be able to see the last of the stunning fall foliage. Take a day trip to nearby Nami Island to really experience Seoul’s autumnal colours at their best.

One of the highlights of visiting Seoul in November is the Seoul Lantern Festival. The festival runs from the first Friday in November to the third week of November. Every evening lanterns light up along the Cheonggyecheon Stream until Cheonggye Plaza and Supyogyo Bridge. Make sure you have your camera!

The cooler evenings make this the perfect time of year to end a day of sightseeing with a visit to a Jjimjilbang or a Korean bath house. These public bath houses have both hot and cool tubs and are also well known for their common rooms which are filled with activities like gaming and reading areas.

Another lovely that has cropped up on many of our lists is Thailand. This country was my first experience when it came to international travel and it won my heart. While I haven’t had the chance to make it back there again, one thing that I can say for certain is that the yearning is real.

I mean you could have a whole 1 month itinerary in Thailand planned out and still want to head back to the country to see more. It is that beautiful!

15. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a great spot to spend November in Asia.

Chiang Mai is a great spot to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Chiang Mai

GETTING THERE: Getting to Chiang Mai is very easy – there is an international airport (that serves several budget airlines), a large bus station and a train station where you can take the overnight sleeper train to and from Bangkok.

WHERE TO STAY: The best place to stay in Chiang Mai is in the old town where there is a great choice of accommodation for all budgets which are close to many attractions. If you are looking for luxury try the beautiful   99 The Heritage hotel , and if you are a backpacker, there are a number of highly rated hostels.

Chiang Mai is a charming and laid-back riverside city located in northern Thailand, known for it’s beautiful ancient temples and mountainous landscape. It is the perfect place to visit in November as the famous Yee Peng festival is held this month.

This is the festival where you release floating lanterns into the sky to symbolize letting go of all the ills and misfortunes in the previous year.

The festival is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month every year, which is normally around mid-November and the celebrations last for several days with many concerts, parades and activities taking place all over the city.

The weather in Chiang Mai is also very pleasant in November as it is the cool and dry season. You can enjoy a range of fun activities in the area such as visiting the elephant nature park, jungle trekking and shopping at the epic  Chiang Mai Sunday walking street market .

Culture lovers will enjoy exploring the old town and visiting the many temples, whilst foodies will love the endless street food options in the night markets, plus a variety of excellent cooking classes located in the countryside.

16. Koh Phangan

Searching for a place to spend November in Asia? Consider visiting Koh Phangan.

Searching for a place to spend November in Asia? Consider visiting Koh Phangan.

LOCATION: Koh Phangan

GETTING THERE: Fly to Surat Thani, then take a ferry to Koh Phangan

WHERE TO STAY: Seaflower Bungalows, a great mid-range option

Koh Phangan is a wonderful Thai island to head to anytime of year. Truth be told, November is the rainy season there. However, since I spent two Novembers there, I can tell you it is still a great time to visit, especially if you like smaller crowds and more chilled vibe.

Heavy rains do come, but mostly at night. Having a small raincoat with you will serve as a good backup if a tropical storm comes unexpectedly.

There are less events going on, but the Full Moon party still takes place, of course. Beaches are wonderfully empty and so are the cafés. You can hike Koh Phangan’s numerous trails without sweating like crazy.

November is also a time when waterfalls are at their best. Go see e.g. the Phaeng Waterfall, the largest waterfall on the island. In November it’s also a lot easier with accommodation.

Hotels in Koh Phangan  charge a lot less and you can rent a house more easily too. Just make sure it’s not located up a steep path, where the road could get dangerous after a heavy rain or at a vast flat area where water holds up and serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

It is hard not to fall in love with Vietnam. The country has a varied landscape to explore, amazing cuisine that is famous the world over and has activities for all ages.

We spent three weeks in the country and quite frankly they were not enough. That’s one of the reasons why this country on our list of places to spend November in Asia particularly intrigues me.

Hoi An is an amazing place to spend November in Asia.

Hoi An is an amazing place to spend November in Asia.

LOCATION: Hoi An

GETTING THERE:  Hoi An is 30 kilometres from Da Nang airport, which receives daily flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and several other large cities. Private transfers, taxi or shared shuttles are available to Hoi An.

WHERE TO STAY:  Home style villas are a great way to experience the friendly culture of Hoi An. The Golden Bell  is a beautiful boutique villa which is well situated within an easy bike ride of both the center and the beach.

With wonky Japanese merchant houses still lining the tiny laneways of Hoi An, the popularity of the central Vietnam town has not lost any of its dreamy laid-back atmosphere. It has a timeless and sophisticated – yet crumbling – aesthetic which has stood the test of time.

While the cute lanterns dangling on the worn facades may be required by law, this strange intervention by the government does nothing to dampen the atmospheric glow reflecting on the Thu Bon River.

Hoi An is a beautiful city. Spend your time lazing in friendly lounge bars and cycling dreamy backstreets. Snap up a bargain at one of the many tailors in town. Walk around the old town at night or learn to cook delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

Whatever you choose, no trip to Hoi An would be complete without admiring the Japanese covered bridge – famous for its ornate carvings of monkeys and dogs.

Coffee has a big presence in Hoi An. With tiny independent roasters occupying even smaller charming spaces, it’s one of the best places in Vietnam to café hop.

Once you’ve explored the charming centre, cycle out to An Bang Beach with white sand and palm trees as far as the eye can see and relax with a Vietnamese Mojito from one of the boutique resorts.

10 Best Destinations In Asia To Travel This November

1. Dead sea, Israel

Located on the border of the two countries Israel and Jordan, the Dead Sea has long become a coordinate that attracts many tourists to resort and virtual life because it possesses beautiful scenery and is also rumored to be very helpful for our health. Though famous for its name with the word "sea," this closed water area is actually just a reservoir with the highest salinity in the world.

asia travel november

Due to the terrible salinity, except for some microorganisms, no living organism can grow here. That's why this lake has such a creepy name!

This area owns clear blue water, a dry climate, and is always full of sunshine. In particular, the islands made up of small salt dunes floating in the middle of the lake are also the places where many magical pictures were born on social media. In addition, the biggest reason for attracting tourists from far away is because of the rumor that the water in the Dead Sea has healing powers and is very good for human health.

asia travel november

Scientists have determined that Dead Sea water contains a mixture of beneficial minerals. Unlike table salt, the salt in this lake is very bitter, has the effect of helping to treat many dermatological diseases, helps relieve stress, exfoliates the skin, reduces muscle pain, effectively treats arthritis and sinusitis. Therefore, it is not surprising that the number of tourists flocking here is so large!

asia travel november

Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a critical stage in blending these two distinct cultural traditions.

Best Places to Visit in November

With the cold weather and dark nights closing in on us, you may be wondering what are the best places to visit in November. Today I’m going to share with you some warm places to visit in November.

With the challenging year we’ve had I’m sure you’re looking to escape and relax. I know for me, I’m looking to find a warm-weather destination, and South East Asia is one of the best regions for a winter trip.

I hope to provide you with some inspiration today for your next trip abroad.

1 Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai Thailand

November marks the end of the rainy season in Thailand, and so this time of year welcomes back tourists from around the world. One destination that is particularly great to visit during this time is Chiang Mai, located in the north.

The first of the month sees the Loi Krathong festival , where you can see lanterns and flower boats throughout the city. Chiang Mai offers great night markets and nightlife , making it a vibrant and exciting destination.

If you love nature and wildlife, enjoy meeting Asian elephants and going on day or two long hikes in this region.

It’s one of the best places to visit in November in Thailand and offers a lot of affordable accommodation options. Also, consider twinning this destination with Chiang Rai or Bangkok.

2 Boracay, The Philippines

Boracay The Philippines

If you are looking for the best beaches to visit in November, head to the Philippines. My top choice for a beach trip is Boracay , which offers stunning white beaches.

My favorite beach is called White Beach, and I love strolling along the White Beach Path. Also take the Diniwid Beach Road down to a small, peaceful beach.

If you are looking for some shopping following a day of relaxing, enjoy the D’mall de Boracay , which is a busy shopping street.

In November, the average high temperatures will be around 31°C, and the average low is 24°C. Boracay is a great option for travelers of all budgets, with accommodation available to suit all needs.

From the other side of the island, you can get a quick ferry boat to the Negros Island, the 4th Largest Island in the Philippines

If you looking to stay more in the Philippines, check our guide for the best time to visit the Philippines .

3 Singapore

Marina Bay Singapore

For a unique city break, head to Singapore to escape the winter weather. Singapore is an incredible city, with something for all tastes and interests.

In November, expect an average high temperature of around 30°C and a low of 25°C. However, prepare for rain at any time, due to Singapore’s tropical year-round climate .

My favorite places to visit in Singapore include the incredible Marina Bay Sands hotel. Enjoy a day or evening strolling around the Gardens by the Bay, and don’t miss going on the OBCB Skyway .

For families or adrenaline-junkies, head over to Sentosa and Universal Studios Singapore. And for nature lovers, enjoy the Singapore Night Safari.

If you enjoy dining out , experience the amazing Chinatown street food market.

Also, Singapore offers many opportunities of having fun after dark so you should check what are the best places to party in Singapore .

This is a great place to dine on a budget. You will be surprised that Singapore has some good hostel choices, which makes traveling here much more affordable than you may expect.

This city really will keep you busy for a good week or so, which is why it’s one of my favorite places to go in November.

4 The Gili Islands, Indonesia

Gili Meno Indonesia Underwater Statues

Another great destination in SouthEast Asia is Bali, and in particular, the Gili Islands . For some of the best beaches in November, the Gili islands offer something to fit everyone’s desires.

The great thing about visiting Bali is that it is very safe and affordable for any travel budget. There are amazing hostels and budget accommodation options that will help your money go much further.

There are three different islands to choose from: Gili Air, Gili Meno, and the most visited island, Gili Trawangan. The most developed island of Gili Trawangan offers great beaches and nighttime parties.

Located between the other two islands, Gili Meno is the smallest island and is perfect for couples. Gili Air offers an authentic Indonesian island experience. All three islands are great for scuba divers, or beginners who want to complete their Open Water certification.

5 Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok Thailand city overview

If you are looking for another city option for November, consider visiting Bangkok.

The bustling capital of Thailand has direct flights from many places around the world and is a great hub for starting a trip around Thailand. Check our guide for the best time to visit Thailand .

Enjoy experiencing the Thai culture by visiting The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. I love experiencing the floating markets here, as well as the Chatuchak Weekend Market.

For backpackers, don’t miss the famous Khaosan Road nightlife , where many of the budget accommodations are based. Bangkok offers a great contrast between traditional and modern offerings within the city.

Ha Long Bay Vietnam

If you are looking to do an extended trip around SE Asia, I’d also highly recommend adding Vietnam to your travel plans.

Start your trip in Ho Chi Minh City, where I’d highly recommend taking a day trip to the nearby Củ Chi tunnels. Also, you should check the best restaurants to eat and the nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City .

One of my favorite places to visit, which is nice and warm in November, is Hoi An.

This ancient town is lovely for relaxing and strolling around and offers some great shopping and dining opportunities. It’s very walkable, so wherever you stay, you’ll enjoy popping out for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Ha Long Bay is an incredible sight, and I’d highly recommend taking a cruise here if time affords it. Make sure to book the right time as the temperature in Ha Long Bay could be very low in the winter season.

Finally, Hanoi is another excellent destination, with the Bach Ma Temple and affordable markets. Check these day trips from Hanoi if you would like to see what northern Vietnam has to offer.

Angkor Wat Temples Overview

One of my favorite destinations in the whole of SouthEast Asia is Cambodia , and it’s one of the best places to travel in November .

Throughout the country, you can expect high temperatures. For example, in the beach region of Sihanoukville, high temperatures usually reach up to 28°C. This only drops to 20°C after dark.

The capital of Phnom Penh has temperatures in November of between 25°C and 30°C. Of course, no trip to Cambodia is complete without visiting Angkor Wat , the largest religious monument in the world.

If you enjoy the nightlife , this is also a fantastic area for partying in after a busy day of sightseeing. Dining and drinking are very reasonably priced here, so make the most of it!

Vientiane Laos overview

A great country to link with Cambodia is nearby Laos . Luang Prabang makes a good starting point for any trip, with its various temples and cultural sites to introduce you to the country.

Personally, I loved my stay in Vientiane, with the Pha That Luang temple and the Mekong river nearby.

Vang Vieng is also another popular tourist destination. Located on the Nam Song River in Laos, there are also the Tham Poukham and Tham Nam caves to visit.

Also, there are some centuries-old monasteries here that are fascinating to see. In Vientiane and Luang Prabang, expect average temperatures of 23°C.

Petronas Towers Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Linking Thailand and Singapore, Malaysia is one of my favorite parts of this region and is one of the best places to go in November.

Start your visit with Kuala Lumpur, where you can visit the world-famous Petronas Towers (aka Petronas Twin Towers). Enjoy the local food markets and savor the Malaysian cuisine here.

Next up, head to Penang, where you can indulge in even more of the delicious food this country has to offer.

The Kek Lok Si Temple and Penang Hill are two highlights for any visitor.

I find Malaysia to be a very affordable travel destination, and so if you are looking for an extended trip on a budget, this is a great choice this year.

You can also easily combine this trip with Thailand and Singapore by starting in Bangkok and making your way further south.

Pulau Tioman Island Malaysia Travel Guide

Brunei, Borneo

If you are looking for a stop-off on the way to your final destination, consider a few days in the tiny nation of Brunei.

Located on the island of Borneo, the capital of Bandar Seri Begawan is home to the incredible Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosque. There are some great hotel options here, and it’s the perfect new destination to explore on a stopover.

The average temperature for November is a delightful 27°C, perfect for relaxing at your hotel pool.

If you are looking for a destination a little closer to home, I’d also recommend considering European cities and countries. My top choices for November include Greece, Paris, Austria (especially for skiers), Croatia and Portugal.

South-East Asia is the perfect region for any traveler at this time of year, regardless of timing and budget restraints. Whether you enjoy an active or relaxing vacation, one of these destinations listed above will be a good choice for you.

Of course, with these challenging times, take time to check out the travel restrictions for your destination from your home country. You wouldn’t want to have any issues when it comes to entering the country on your trip!

And with most Asian destinations now fully open after years of pandemic restrictions, there has never been a better time to plan a trip. After considering local prices, accessibility and the variety of attractions in each destination, along with traveler feedback, U.S. News ranked the best places to visit in Asia. Contribute to next year's list by casting your vote below.

Sagarmatha National Park

Railay beach, guilin and lijiang river national park.

If your dream vacation involves posting up on a postcard-worthy beach, the Maldives is for you. This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. The best way to experience this slice of paradise? Stay in one of many overwater bungalows , of course.

asia travel november

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

asia travel november

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, visitors can take traditional, wooden longtail boat tours to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay to see the surreal limestone rock formations that rise from the sea. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

asia travel november

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

asia travel november

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

asia travel november

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

asia travel november

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto.

asia travel november

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

asia travel november

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

asia travel november

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

asia travel november

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

asia travel november

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.

asia travel november

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

asia travel november

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

asia travel november

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

asia travel november

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

asia travel november

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

It’s official, Asia is back—brighter, bolder, and more ambitious than ever. The region took longer than others to shake off pandemic-related travel restrictions and border closures, but has returned in full force, eager to remind international travelers what they’ve been missing.

The continent’s titanic expanse of territories has always offered a diverse tapestry of to-dos—but across the region, new experiences, events, and accommodation options await. Sri Lanka is emerging phoenix-like from economic crisis and responding with a new food festival, wellness-oriented retreats, and a hiking trail that snakes through 186 miles of hill country and centuries of history. Mongolia is relaxing visa restrictions to give more people the opportunity to experience its vast, rugged landscapes, and Kochi is setting the bar high when it comes to city-wide sustainability initiatives. In the UAE , a lesser-known emirate is vying for attention, while a Japanese port city is flexing its design muscles.

Expanded green spaces, intriguing boutique resorts, luxury sleeper trains, and the ancient Silk Road: our list of the 11 best places to visit in Asia in 2024, entirely informed by contributing writers and editors spread across the region, is packed with reasons to head east.

Don’t forget to also visit our global list of best destinations to visit in 2024 , vetted by Condé Nast Traveler editors based in the US, UK, Spain, Middle East, India, and China. — Selina Denman & Julian Manning

Bangkok Chinatown, Thailand

Always one of the buzziest districts in Bangkok, Chinatown makes the list this year for its ever-exciting food scene. In the year ahead, expect a new wave of restaurants to sprout in this neon-glowing nexus.

With its mom-and-pop noodle joints, incense-infused shrines, and tuk-tuks clattering through centuries-old alleyways, Chinatown has always been one of Bangkok 's buzziest districts. In the mid-2010s, chefs, mixologists, and gallerists started setting up shop in the crumbling townhouses on the district's outskirts and now, a new wave of restaurateurs is headed for Chinatown's neon-glowing nexus, Yaowarat Road. Among them is Australian chef and Thai food guru David Thompson, who, at his Chop Chop Cook Shop , riffs on recipes—buttered prawns, braised peas—from the Chinese-Western restaurants that were all the rage across Bangkok in the 1930s. Upstairs, Goldsmith Bar transforms ingredients commonly found in the neighborhood—shiitake syrup, osmanthus oolong—into heady drinks, and will soon be joined by a Chinese restaurant on the top floor and rooftop terrace.

Lucky Duck , another newcomer, has taken up residence in a historic building nearby and serves up drinks inspired by old-timey Chinese films. Perennially packed Thai restaurant Charmgang is set to open a more laid-back sibling, Charmkrung, where wines and light bites will dominate the menu; and judging from the many buildings currently concealed by tarpaulin and bamboo scaffolding, more bars and restaurants will follow suit. But how much change is too much? 2024 presents a chance to experience the charm of this storied district while still in flux. — Chris Schalkx

The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival is just one popular event in this central Vietnam city—other attractions, like distinctly local dishes, are on offer year-round.

A modern beach city located amid dozens of UNESCO -recognized sites in the country’s heartland—including the ancient port city of Hoi An and the former imperial capital city of Hue—Da Nang is one of Asia’s big post-COVID success stories, with 2023 international arrivals exceeding pre-pandemic figures, thanks in part to new flight routes that make the City of Bridges easier to get to than ever. In 2023, Vietnam Airlines reopened its popular Tokyo route, Taiwan ’s China Airlines started direct flights from Taipei, and several Southeast Asian budget airlines launched flights to the city, with plenty more in the works. Every June, more than 150 daily flights deliver tourists eager to witness the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival.

Son Tra Peninsula—located just 20 minutes from the city center—is another tourist draw, home to a 17-story, 220-foot statue of Lady Buddha, as well as endangered red-shanked douc langurs that live in the peninsula’s nature reserve. Central Vietnamese food specialties like Mì Quảng, the official noodle soup of the region, and Bánh Xèo turmeric crepes, should be another feature of any travel itinerary.

Hotel and resort developers are taking note of Da Nang’s newfound popularity. On Son Tra Peninsula, the Bill Bensley-designed InterContinental Sun Peninsula Resort recently completed an extensive 10th-anniversary renovation that includes a new club lounge, villas, and spa concept. IHG Hotel Group’s voco Ma Belle Danang opened in the city in 2023, and 2024 will herald the arrival of Da Nang’s first Mandarin Oriental property and an outpost of the wellness-driven Southeast Asian Fusion Hotel group. — Dan Q. Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

Go for: lesser-known walking trails, new vantage points, an international folk festival

The Mustang Trail Race is just one of many events on the horizon for Kathmandu Valley designed to encourage visitors to...

The Mustang Trail Race is just one of many events on the horizon for Kathmandu Valley designed to encourage visitors to embrace and immerse themselves in the Himalayan landscape.

Kathmandu Valley’s standing as Nepal ’s cultural hub will be revived in early 2024 with the return of the International Folk Festival-Nepal in March—its first in-person iteration since 2020—and the biennial Film Southasia , South Asia’s premier documentary festival, later in the year.

Atop Kathmandu Valley’s picturesque ridges lie the emergent destinations of Dhulikhel and Chandragiri, replete with hidden trails that are an unexpected alternative to Nepal’s more well-trodden and strenuous trekking routes. In Dhulikhel, Thai hospitality outfit Dusit Hotels and Resorts recently launched a charming luxury resort , while nearby, the Namo Buddha Eco Resort offers an opportunity to explore Nepal’s sustainable agricultural practices.

Bolstered by a commitment to improve the country’s tourism infrastructure with the launch of Nepal’s Tourism Decade in 2023, 2024 will see the Kathmandu Valley continue to serve as a gateway to the rest of Nepal’s tourism hotspots, with improved road and air connectivity between Kathmandu and the valleys of Pokhara and Mustang. As the 2024 additions to Pokhara’s hospitality landscape, such as Le Glamour Luxury Resort , set up in lofty vantage points across the valley, easier access to the once-remote Mustang Valley is similarly leading to the introduction of luxury accommodation options such as the stunning 29-suite Bill Bensley-designed Shinta Mani Mustang, and events such as the Mustang Trail Race, designed to encourage visitors to fully immerse themselves in this singular Himalayan landscape. — Amulya Gyawali

In Kobe, Japan, design-forward spaces, like the new Officine Universelle Buly skincare shop (left), are creatively building on its seafaring heritage.

Sandwiched between steep mountains and sparkling seas in southwestern Japan , the port city of Kobe is seriously strengthening its design credentials. Taking centre stage is Vague Kobe , a new creative space by Teruhiro Yanagihara Studio (TYS). Spanning the upper levels of an elegant former 1930s bank, it houses a gallery, bookstore, café, wine bar, flower shop, and design studio. In a perfectly measured showcase of contemporary Japanese design—and a reflection of Kobe’s seafaring heritage—renovated interiors combine crafted walls of traditional Japanese plasterwork and clean minimalist lines with large windows, stone floors, and ornate tilework.

Further proof of Kobe’s design ascendency was the arrival of French artisanal perfume and skincare brand Officine Universelle Buly in mid-2023, its shop and café interiors flamboyantly layered in signature style—from Kobe beef-inspired expanses of red-veined marble to chocolate-like lacquerware and “dripping” lamps. Recent plans by Trunk , arguably Tokyo’s hippest hotel group, to make Kobe the setting for its first hotel outside the capital is further evidence of the city’s prominence. And Kobe Port Tower —a panoramic observation deck on the shores of Osaka Bay—will reopen in early 2024 with a string of new facilities, including a new museum showcasing light-themed artworks and a fancy 360-degree revolving café bar. — Danielle Demetriou

Kochi, India

Go for: sustainable initiatives, stunning waterways, local festivals

Kochi's draws are modern and old-school in equal measure. For one thing, Kochi's 10 islands will become fully solar-powered by 2024. But local festivals like the ancient temple gathering of Thrissur Pooram and the Kochi-Muziris Biannale maintain the texture and history that make the place special.

Kochi’s waterways have lured visitors for centuries, its verdant backwaters, lagoons and rivers as attractive to travelers today as they were to Arab, Chinese, and European merchants in the 1300s. As one of the first in the world, its water metro system—a socially inclusive transport option connecting 10 islands along a 50-mile network—was already revolutionary when it launched in 2021, but will set the bar even higher by late 2024, when it becomes fully solar powered.

The move is part of a wider effort to transform Kerala ’s financial and industrial capital into a solar powerhouse. The city’s international airport (CIAL) is the first in the world to operate solely on solar energy and was recently upgraded with the introduction of a dedicated business jet terminal that’s the largest in India. This will be complemented by a refreshed airport hotel in mid-2024, as the current property is brought under the Taj banner and upgraded accordingly. Improvements are also underway at Kochi’s 150-year-old Ernakulam Market, which is set to unveil its years-in-the-making redesign in early 2024.

On a wider scale, Kerala Tourism 2.0, the state’s $43 million 2023-2024 sustainable tourism initiative, will focus on improving infrastructure and travel corridors between Kochi and less-visited destinations such as Munnar and Kozhikode—as well as local festivals, from the ancient temple gathering of Thrissur Pooram to the Kochi-Muziris Biennale . Meanwhile, responsible tourism operator The Blue Yonder —which created a twilight dining experience inspired by Kochi’s historic Chinese fishing nets in 2023 in Ezhikkara—offers opportunities to experience conservation-focused mangrove trails and climate-resilient Pokkali rice farms, alongside it revamped 2023-2024 Nila River voyages: two-week odysseys along the state’s cultural lifeline, from the Palakkad gap to Ponnani. — Taarika John

Go for: improved access, unique cultural festivals, and unscripted adventure

Thrillseeking adventure travelers will always find something to love about Mongolia and it will never be easier for them...

Thrill-seeking adventure travelers will always find something to love about Mongolia, and it will never be easier for them to do so than in 2024 with the first direct US flights, a new crop of nationalities who can visit visa-free, and more.

Mongolia has long been the destination for thrill-seeking adventure travelers—as participants in the wonderfully chaotic Mongol Rally will attest—but the country is expanding beyond that niche as its tourism board sets its sights on attracting a million tourists per year. In 2023, the country launched visa-free travel for a further 34 nationalities—bringing the total up to 61—in a campaign that is set to run until 2025.

The launch of new luxury lodges, cultural tours, and the announcement of the country’s first ever direct US flight, coming in 2024 to the $650-million Chinggis Khaan International Airport, further signal Mongolia’s tourism ambitions.

Following the success of the rugged-but-chic Three Camel Lodge , Mongolia’s luxury accommodation options are expanding with places such as Yeruu Lodge , which opened in 2023. Offbeat cultural experiences are one of the most compelling reasons to visit the country’s vast, rugged expanses and local operator Breanna Wilson offers some of the best. After a successful season of horse trekking and the Naadam Festival—a colorful display of strength, horsemanship, and marksmanship—in 2023, Wilson is expanding her 2024 tours to include a digital nomad week, a women-only retreat in Orkhon Valley, and a three-day archery training session with Namnaa Academy , an organization that began reviving the ancient art of mounted archery in 2020. — Ali Wunderman

Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

Go for: exhilarating adventure sports, luxurious accommodation options

Adventure tourism developments are in the works in Ras Al Khaimah's rocky mountains (and along its undersung coastline), with Jebel Jais acting as the home base for a burgeoning hiking and ziplining scene.

With its rocky mountains and low-key coastline, Ras Al Khaimah has long served as a weekend escape for UAE residents. But with several adventure tourism developments in the works and an influx of luxury properties lining up to open in the UAE’s fourth-largest emirate, there’s plenty happening now to put Ras Al Khaimah on the global tourism map. On an island just off the coast, the 174-room Anantara Mina Al Arab Resort , home to the country’s first overwater villas, will welcome its first guests in January—to be joined by a 155-room Nikki Beach Resort in 2026.

But most of the action is happening on the slopes of Jebel Jais , the UAE’s highest mountain. Among the peaks that are already home to the world’s longest zipline, adrenaline-lovers will soon be able to launch themselves into the blue beneath the canopy of a paraglider with the new Jais Wings experience. And if all that activity leaves you longing for a comfortable place to rest, the 70 luxurious rooms at nature-focused Saij Mountain Lodge will be perfect for bedding down once it opens in 2024. To top it all off, Qatar Airways resumed operating daily flights direct from its Doha hub to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in November, making this lesser-known emirate more accessible than ever. — Nicola Chilton

Saudi Arabia's Red Sea has both untouched desert and vibrant coral reefs—both of which will be part of an ambitious sustainable tourism development in the destination in 2024.

Creating a completely new tourism destination in an area of pristine natural beauty—including coral reefs that are home to critically endangered species, unspoiled desert, and dormant volcanoes—is a fine tightrope to walk. Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea aims to navigate these challenges with ambitious efforts that will make it a center of regenerative tourism, powered by 100% renewable energy. Only 22 of the more than 90 islands in the area will be developed, and nine have been designated as protected conservation areas. While many of the sustainability efforts will be behind the scenes, some are visible—and visitable.

New mangrove parks will be populated with trees currently being grown in a mangrove nursery (the project aims to plant 50 million by 2030). The first phase of the destination, which includes 16 luxury hotels, is powered by 760,000 solar panels, and the world’s first zero-carbon 5G network has already been installed. Three resorts— Six Senses Southern Dunes , Nujuma, and The St. Regis —are set to open in the coming months, each with its own strict program of sustainability measures, ranging from light-touch modular structures to intelligent landscaping, smart waste management, and local sourcing. Transport within the destination will be by e-vehicles, and hydrogen-powered seaplanes will eventually transport visitors between the islands. Whether a luxury tourist destination can ever truly be sustainable remains to be seen, but the efforts being made in the Red Sea are certainly testing the hypothesis. — Nicola Chilton

Singapore's glamour has always been legendary, but things will be taken up a notch next year as Belmond returns with its long-awaited Eastern & Oriental Express—a new journey will take passengers from Singapore to Malaysia and back again come February.

Even by Singapore ’s hyperkinetic standards, 2024 is shaping up to be an unusually livewire year. March will usher in Taylor Swift hype at the National Stadium in Kallang, as the pop star lights up the waterfront venue in her sole South East Asian stop on the record-shattering The Eras Tour. Hotel bookings have reportedly surged in anticipation, right on the heels of a string of high-profile openings in 2023, including the much-anticipated Mondrian Singapore Duxton near Chinatown. Relaunches and openings will continue into 2024, with the Grand Hyatt on the plush Orchard Road-Scotts Road juncture unveiling a completely new look, and Raffles inaugurating its villa-style spa and resort on Sentosa Island .

Singapore is also adding exciting accoutrements to its impressive green quilt. At Gardens by the Bay , the country’s landscaping masterpiece, the longest sculpture in the world—a 300-foot parade depicting 60 endangered animals cast in bronze—is on display until May. Cycling paths are coming to 10 additional neighborhoods (Jurong Lake District and Punggol among them), and some will be linked to the city’s more than 300km-long green network of park connectors. A 755-foot-long forest trail and a lagoon pool will be among the highlights of the soon-to-reopen Big Sister’s Island marine park.

Not to forget Singapore’s legendary glamour, which holds sway over everything, as Belmond returns with its long-awaited Eastern & Oriental Express , kicking off a new journey from Singapore to Malaysia and back in February. In September, the country has its annual date with Formula 1 at the iconic Marina Bay Street Circuit, which, as F1’s original night race, is set against a dazzling backdrop of skyscrapers and city lights. — Lakshmi Sankaran

The Silk Road, Uzbekistan

Go for: the ancient charm of the Silk Road charging into the future with new high-speed rail routes

Samarkand is one of four cities in Uzbekistan benefitting from a renewed interest in the Silk Road, with Afrosiyob, a new high-speed rail network linking its minarets and turquoise-blue tiling with the country's capital of Tashkent—and more. Routes to Khiva, 2024's tourism capital of the Islamic world, will come online next year.

For centuries, traders journeyed along the ancient Silk Road, weaving westwards from China to Iran and Turkey, sharing their stories and cultures alongside textiles, tea, and perfume. Today, four cities in Uzbekistan —Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara, and Khiva—are benefitting from renewed interest in this historic route. Explorers may once have had to contend with long, arduous journeys on camel-back, but new Afrosiyob high-speed trains have become a lifeline linking Tashkent, the country’s capital, to Samarkand and Bukhara. In 2024, this 373-mile rail network will extend to Khiva, making it even easier to explore Uzbek Silk Road cities.

While Samarkand’s minarets and turquoise-blue tiling are hallmarks of regal Timurid architecture—evident in the towering monoliths of Registan Square— Bukhara is the site of beguiling mosque complexes and age-old rug-making traditions. In Tashkent, the host of 2024’s FIFA Futsal World Cup , heritage is combined with a more cosmopolitan verve, and Swissôtel is slated to open its first property here in 2024.

Khiva, the latest rail stop, has also been declared 2024’s tourism capital of the Islamic world, perfectly positioning it to showcase the mud-and-straw walls and impeccably preserved fortifications of Itchan Kala , a UNESCO-certified inner city with over 50 historic monuments. — Lakshmi Sankaran

South and central Sri Lanka

Kayaam House is one of several openings that signals the luxury and wellness boom marking Sri Lanka's tourism industry right now.

Rising from economic uncertainty, Sri Lanka ’s tourism industry is in the midst of a luxury and wellness boom—from its tea-filled highlands to its palm-fringed shores. In the south of the country, new luxury resorts continue to entice. Among them, Kayaam House and Ahu Bay by homegrown luxury travel specialist Resplendent Ceylon; a Hilton resort next to the Indian Ocean-bordering Yala National Park, one of the best places to spot Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards; and the art deco-inspired The Charleston , which opens in December in the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. The already established Kalukanda House —a villa in surf town Weligama by British-Sri Lankan interior designer Dee Gibson—is making its mark with retreats centered on female empowerment, with yoga, breath work, reiki, and Ayurveda included.

A comprehensive renovation of the nine-room Meraki , which employs local women and offers yoga, holistic treatments, island-sourced vegetarian fare, and artisanal crafts in the Polhena Beach district of Matara, is set to be unveiled in early 2024; and luxury fitness getaway Makahiya is gearing up to launch its own brand of bespoke retreats.

In January, the Galle Literary Festival will return after a five-year hiatus, with appearances by literary figures such as Shehan Karunatilaka and Alexander McCall Smith, while Gourmet Galle , the country’s new food festival, will spotlight 12 chefs in 12 venues, ranging from beaches to paddy fields, over a 12-week period from January to March.

Inland, development of the Pekoe Trail , a new nearly 200-mile network of hiking routes that snakes its way through Sri Lanka’s highlands, continues. Traversing historic tea plantations, colonial estates, local villages, holy shrines, and forests brimming with biodiversity, it’s a novel way to experience Sri Lanka’s lush hill country, particularly when paired with stays at boutique properties such as W15 Hanthana , the luxurious Goatfell , or the Kelburne Estate , scheduled to open in December 2024. — Zinara Rathnayake

Our 21 day tour was excellent. We were picked up at the airports, the hotels etc spot on time. Our guides (particularly Ann) were amazing. They were so accommodating. Because there were only two of in our group we were able to see and do so much more. We went to several villages, went to numerous schools, went to lotus farm, etc etc etc. the accommodations were fine, rooms clean and beds comfortable. I would not hesitate to travel with Hoi An express in the future

Cycle Vietnam Tour

Cycle Vietnam

This a perfect tour if you set your expectations right. The support crew is amazing, attentive to every detail and is really putting their whole heart into their work. The food, the 3-4 star hotels, the bikes were all good. However, the tour is really geared towards people heavily interested in cycling. We visited a temple or an attraction every couple of days. Boat, train, homestay were all welcome additions, but the rest was cycling through fields and villages, and occassional pool / beach in the hotel. As a tourist visiting Vietnam only once, I expected more tourist activities (historical / architectural landmarks, shows, wild animals) or adventures (kyaking? ziplining?). Most days finish at 4-5 pm, so we did have time for that. The cycling itself could be structured differently: we often cycled when heat is at peak, but never cycled after 3pm. Finally, be aware that it is Ok to cycle at your own pace and stop / take pictures whenever you want. The group will be waiting for you at the next junction. Knowing that from start would save me some incovenience. If you are Ok with all of these, you will have the best time.

Cambodia Intro Tour

Cambodia Intro

A memorable 10 days for sure!! As someone who had always wanted to visit Cambodia, my experience with IntroTravel and our guide Seyha exceeded my every expectation. On top of the already well-planned itinerary, Seyha always went above and beyond with recommendations and helped organize additional activities that suited our group’s interests. He took care of our every need throughout the trip as well. 10/10 would recommend both our amazing guide and Intro to anyone thinking about traveling somewhere new!

Southeast Asia Encompassed Tour

Southeast Asia Encompassed

I've traveled to Southeast Asia and to South America with G Adventures on 'Classic' style tours, and both trips were wonderful. I traveled solo, but I found like-minded travelers in my group. All the logistics are taken care of so you can just enjoy the experience. The CEOs and local guides make sure you know what to expect, what's needed, optional activities, meal suggestions, etc. for each day. There was a good balance of scheduled activities and free time with flexibility to seek your own interests. Accommodations were mostly clean and comfortable. Overall very good value for the money, in my opinion. Also, G makes a point to give back to local communities and provide local cultural experiences not often found with other group tours. If you want to see the major sites, but also dive a bit deeper, without the hassle of doing all the legwork yourself, find a G Adventures tour and go!

Wanderlands Bali & Lombok - 13 Days Tour

Wanderlands Bali & Lombok - 13 Days

We really liked how perfectly organized everything was. No waiting times for transport, great tips from our guide Stacia (also for ongoing travels after the official trip!). The Tour is full of amazing and really interesting activities, but also great impressions of the local life in Indonesia. Our highlight was a diving class (optional activity), visiting the luwak coffee Plantage and the impressions of Gili. When choosing this tour you should know that there is not much time to chill at the pool, because of the lots of fun activities. So probably book few more days to chill at the pool or ocean and do nothing. Furthermore you should be aware that you will mostly visit restaurants that are really western style and aren’t that authentic. So if you are really into Asian food probably think of visiting some special restaurants on your own. All in all we would totally recommend. Enjoy your trip!

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days Tour

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days

Amazing tour with John! If you don’t have much time, this is the best one you could do. All the main spots, seen at appropriate times. Enough times to relax even if we’re quite busy. Favorites: kimono rental, the temple stay and the red gates at 6am.

Japan Adventure

Had the best time on this trip! Everything ran smoothly and was organised which is exactly what I wanted, whilst seeing the best bits of the country and doing some amazing activities. Zoe was fantastic and lead us round like a pro, she was knowledgeable and fun. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Northern Thailand Adventure Tour

Northern Thailand Adventure

It's a great, action-packed itinerary, which I really enjoyed (as an experienced traveller in Thailand.) Our guide, Max, was awesome and he made the trip for me. Max is intelligent, very professional and good fun. The hotel in Chiang Mai was below par and I fed that back to TruTravels. Is this an issue? Well yes: you spend 5 nights there. The free breakfast at the WangBurapa Hotel was awful (and I'm not fussy) and they don't clean the pool. I would have given this trip 5 stars if it wasn't for the WangBurapa Hotel.

Was a great experience! Thank you
Sang is a great tour leader. He is very helpful and likeable
This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!

The 30 best holiday destinations in November

30 best holiday destinations in November from the Caribbean to Stockholm

November means winter is fast-approaching the UK , which equals getting up and going home in the dark, usually in the pelting rain, no winter coat on earth a match for the season’s creeping damp. It’s almost NHS-prescribed that you pick a November holiday destination to survive until the sunlight finally peeps through again around March . Happily, the Caribbean is basking in a mellow, pre-Christmas glow, while the rainy season has dried up in East Africa and South-east Asia. And if you want to see how winter is really done, leave behind our soggy isles for epic white-outs in the extreme north and south. So, without further ado, these are the 30 best holiday destinations in November. For more, see our guide to where is hot in November .

Lisbon, Portugal

Temperature : 20°C high; 12°C low Season : autumn Travel time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

As most of mainland Europe shivers, Portugal remains enviably mild: Lisbon ’s average November temperature is 18°C. Of course, it’s not just the weather that makes this cobbled capital so alluring: now ranking among Europe’s coolest city breaks , it’s a hive of high-end but refreshingly affordable restaurants , raucous hole-in-the-wall bars and covetable concept stores (not to mention those cute, canary-yellow vintage trams). Lisbon was even named Europe's most budget-friendly city break for 2023 . Make time to explore neighbourhood-of-the-moment Cais do Sodré, a formerly sketchy part of town that now has a spruced-up riverfront promenade, cool warehouse conversions and fab food stalls at Time Out -curated Mercado da Ribeira.

Where to stay: Tropical-themed The Ivens gets our pick for one of the best new hotels in the world for 2022. If you're after a view, try this rooftop Airbnb near Alfama or Memmo Alfama which has one of the best rooftop pools in the city. For more, see our edit of the best hotels in Lisbon .

Sayulita, Mexico

Temperature: 33°C high; 20°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 15 hours Time difference: GMT -5

Join the hippies in this Pacific coast surf town, where brightly painted design boutiques and vintage surfboard shops rub up against al pastor stands and street eats sold from wheelbarrows. Less glam than Tulum , but much hipper than resort-y Puerto Vallarta further south, it’s an easy-breezy scene, more catching waves and afternoon Margaritas than yoga and cold-pressed juice. An absence of major hotels, in favour of hippie-chic guesthouses ( Casa Love and Petit Hotel Hafa are favourites), gives the impression of a best-kept secret – but, come Christmas, Sayulita is packed. Nip in just before peak season, though, and not only have the summer rain and humidity finally eased off, but it’s the best time for whale watching, too. Or consider staying in Sayulita’s quieter neighbour, San Pancho. The small hotels here are closely tied to the community. Tailwind Jungle Lodge , for example, hosts community events, donates to sustainable development in the area and promotes local businesses to guests – and it’s just a 30-minute drive to Sayulita for a day’s surfing.

Where to stay: Just 36 guests are given the run of green jungle, white beach and blue water across 250 acres at Imanta Resorts Punta de Mita .

Athens, Greece

Temperature : 18°C high; 12°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 3 hours 40 minutes Time difference: GMT+2

Athens makes a brilliant and warm weekend city break , where the new youth culture is breathing life into this historical city and hip young start-ups are booming in the face of austerity. Performances spaces, art galleries and quirky bars have sprung up in once-gritty neighbourhoods, and high-end shops have been reborn as restaurants. Go in November, when it's cool enough to wander around the Acropolis and the Parthenon and still have a crisp blue-sky backdrop to your Instagram shots. The fact that you'll also skip the crowds is the cherry on top.

Where to stay: Foodies won't want to miss xenodocheio Milos , a hotel by chef Costas Spiliadis. For something playful, check in to one of the compact but comfy rooms at Gatsby Athens . Design hotel NEW packs a punch, with upcycled furniture and a rooftop restaurant. For an eco-friendly trip, consider a stay at the Coco-Mat hotel , where the all-natural, locally handmade mattresses and linens are just the tip of their stay-natural philosophy. There are also wooden bikes for eco-friendly sightseeing, an onsite herb garden and homemade, seasonal food. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Athens .

Antigua and Barbuda

Temperature: 29°C high; 23°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 8 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT-5

Friday nights in Antigua go something like this: rum punch and barbecued spiny-tailed lobster, dancing barefoot on the beach in the moonlight, and walking home sandy and dishevelled but happy the next morning. The island is as wild and wonderful as it is flashy - away from the five-star hotels and super yachts, you can still find empty white-sand beaches. Support conservation and biodiversity by booking an ecotour at Wallings Nature Reserve , the first-ever community-managed national park. Learn about the history and the wildlife as you hike this not-for-profit sanctuary. Antigua's little sister Barbuda is more go-slow, with a handful of low-key hotels.

Where to stay: We recommend Jumby Bay , a secluded 300-acre island off the north coast of Antigua.

East Sussex England

The South Downs, England

Temperature : 11ºC high; 3ºC low Season: autumn/winter Time difference: none

Fairweather walkers should probably stick to summer. But for blustery yomps along the beach or over Downs, followed by local ales fireside in some toasty, well-restored boozer – which the area has in spades – autumn is a treat of a time for a South Downs weekender. South Downs National Park spans 165 conservation areas, more than a dozen European wildlife sites, and thousands of listed buildings and monuments, with the South Downs Way stretching 100 miles. The walk is broken up into short sections and is nicely signposted for cyclists and walkers. Visit The Sustainability Centre , which hosts workshops for children and adults throughout the year. And on 5 November it hosts the most spectacular Guy Fawkes’ Night anywhere, when the market town of Lewes becomes the bonfire capital of the world, with processions, fireworks displays, flaming tar barrels and burning effigies illuminating its streets.

Where to stay: At The Pig in the South Downs , featured on our 2022 hot list of the best new hotels in the world. We also love The Star , a wonderful 15th-century inn given a fresh makeover in 2021 by Olga Polizzi.

Temperature: 4°C high; -2°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 2 hours 50 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

November brings Iceland ’s dark winter nights and, with them, the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Oh yes, you’ll be told to manage your expectations, that aurora-hunting is a tricky business, but in a country where it’s not unheard of to see the dance of the green veils as you exit the airport, you’d have to be rather luckless to miss out. Stack the odds in your favour by staying somewhere as deliciously remote as Deplar Farm . Iceland’s best hotel is a high-end hideout on the remote Troll Peninsula , with diversions ranging from sensory-deprivation pods to heli-skiing excursions.

Where to stay: Scandi-rustic Deplar Farm is the most extraordinary stay in the country. The newly opened Reykjavik Edition is a great central option, with a notable rooftop terrace for viewing the northern lights. For something private, rent this unique glass cabin on Airbnb . See our guide to the best hotels in Iceland for more recommendations.

Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Temperature: 25°C high; 10°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 11 hours Time difference: GMT-8

Frank Lloyd Wright said Arizona deserved its own architecture; that the state invited a distinctive, desert aesthetic. So he set about scattering that legacy across the barren landscape from his winter home and studio, Taliesin West in Scottsdale – just outside the state capital, Phoenix, and perhaps the ultimate manifestation of mid-century Arizona style. So it was only a matter of time until Phoenix dropped its decades-long reputation as an arid, old-school spa town and adopted that of an edgy, visual arts hub. Inevitably, the hip young things descended, bringing cool and culture, too. Taliesin West is now an art museum and architecture school; downtown, Bentley Gallery at Bentley Projects shows exciting mid-career artists under the exposed pipes of a restored warehouse and former laundry. Today’s Phoenix is the sort of place to drink cocktails in an Art Deco landmark (Bitter & Twisted), before retiring to a fabulously retro hotel designed by a Wright protégé, once frequented by Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant ( Hotel Valley Ho ). For the best view of the city, though, you’ve got to hike up red-rock Camelback Mountain – an easier proposal in November’s mid-20s temperatures.

Where to stay: We love The Phoenician , set across 250-acres of the Sonoran Desert. Or choose a hotel that takes advantage of their place in the ‘Valley of the Sun’ and using solar power, including The Phoenician and the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale .

Essaouira, Morocco

Temperature: 22°C high; 15°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 6 hours Time difference: GMT+0

For a blast of winter sun a short hop away, Morocco is ideal - even for a weekend break. Along the coast are windswept beaches and surf towns such as Taghazout and Tamraght, where it's all about chilling out in the sun. Essaouira is a feast for the senses: freshly-caught fish is grilled over smoking-hot coals in shacks right on the harbour, and shisha smoke rises from rooftop bars. Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens used to hang out here, and it's still a free-spirited place, with dozens of independent galleries and boutiques selling locally made pottery and crafts. Make time for a spot of ethical shopping. Mashi Mushki, which sells locally made art and crafts, donates a portion of profits to Project 91, which helps young people in Essaouira find employment. Swanky (and sustainable) boutique hotel Villa Maroc sells Argan oil made by a local cooperative.

Where to stay: At Didier Spindler's maximalist B&B Dar Adul . For something more romantically rustic try Villa Maroc or Auberge Tangaro .

Tenerife

 Tenerife, Spain

Temperature : 23ºC high; 18ºC low Season: autumn Flight time from UK : 4 hours 30 minutes Time difference: none

Short-hop year-round sunshine is what Tenerife is known for. Which is great – but beyond the beaches and the package-holiday crowds, there’s another side to this Canary Island which delights the more curious traveller: architecture in the colonial towns of La Laguna and La Orotava, low-key restaurants in fishing villages such as Garachico, lunar landscapes to walk in its blackened interior, and contemporary art and architecture in the capital Santa Cruz. The waters around Tenerife are busy with whales, and with whale-watchers. Not all whale-watching trips are responsibly operated – check out their eco-certification first. Whale Wise Eco Tours use solar-powered electric boats to minimise noise and carbon footprint. Plus, 200 miles out in the Atlantic, the island is one of the best places in the world for stargazing .

Where to stay: Families love the pink palace that is The Ritz-Carlton Abama . For something more boutique, book a room with a terrace at La Laguna Gran Hotel.

Temperature: 30°C high; 21°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 7 hours 25 minutes Time difference: GMT+3

If what you want is a hit of winter sun, somewhere remote with wide open spaces, and just a short flight away from the UK, then Oman may just be the place you were looking for. Muscat is where you'll find age-old traditions, elaborate mosques and scent-filled souks. On the west coast, the Musandam Peninsula has empty coves and always-warm green-blue water, hidden by the imposing Hajar mountains. For more dramatic scenery still, travel along the southern coast, camping among the dunes in goat's-hair Bedouin tents. Choose an overland camping adventure with Responsible Travel that spirits you across the desert from the capital, Muscat, to incongruously green Salalah in the south. As well as visiting traditional fishing villages and learning about Bedouin life from local guides, you’ll stop by Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve and the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary.

Where to stay: The Chedi in Muscat is made up of low-built villas set in gardens of oranges. At Six Senses Zighy Bay, the pool villas embrace traditional Omani style and are carved out of stone. For a grown-up mountain retreat, try Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort , one of Oman’s most ambitious wilderness hotels.

Namibia

Namibia, Africa

Temperature : 31ºC high; 16ºC low Season: dry season/winter Flight time from UK : 10 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

The vast, remote landscapes of Namibia are some of the most magnificent on earth. Mountainous dunes, endless empty desert, untouched savannah where the big hitters of African wildlife roam: elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, rhinos, giraffes. In recent years, a crop of knock-out new camps is allowing wildlife lovers to discover the farthest stretches of this country. While November brings the start of the rains in Namibia, this is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to wildlife variety and sheer drama.

“Across most of southern Africa, November is an interesting month. It is a time of transition – giving travellers an amazing experience of the end of the dry season and the spectacular breaking of the rains,” says Chris McIntyre, founder of specialist tour operator Expert Africa . At the tail end of the dry season, wildlife gathers at the waterholes in places such as Etosha National Park. Then as the rains roll in, when storm clouds gather over the mountains and plains, the landscapes begin to bloom again.

“Swiftly following the greening of the land is a flush of new life, as more insects, reptiles, amphibians and migrant birds appear on the scene,” says McIntyre. And as it’s low season, prices are appealing low, too.

Where to stay: Many of Namibia’s incredible new lodges are eco-friendly with a minimal footprint and work with local communities and conservation groups. In the Huab River valley, Damaraland Camp is a pioneer of community-based tourism – a partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the local Torra Conservancy. Hoanib Valley Camp works with the local community and Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Expert Africa can arrange bespoke itineraries to Namibia. We also love Habitas Namibia , a wellness-focused, people-driven safari camp.

Verbier, Switzerland

Temperature: 3°C high; -6°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 1 hour 40 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

In Switzerland ’s Verbier, the emphasis is on fun. The smugly proficient can get their free-ride fix with the best back-country skiing in the Alps. The forever hopeless can just park their planks and whoop it up tobogganing instead. The apres scene is second-to-none: Farm Club has been a snooty institution for nearly half a century, with its haughty door policy and past guests including Diana Ross. And the hotels aren’t your average chalet set-up, belonging to the likes of Design Hotels and Small Luxury Hotels Group. Several lifts open in early November (weekends only), thanks to good snow cover at higher altitudes – your best chance to ski in and then ski the hell out before the high-season crush.

Where to stay: Paris-based cocktail crew The Experimental Group are behind speakeasy on the slopes Experimental Chalet .

New Zealand

Temperature: 22°C high; 12°C low Season : spring Flight time from UK: 24 hours Time difference: GMT+11

On New Zealand 's South Island, you can ski in the morning and sunbathe in the afternoon. It's action-packed, with wild swimming, white-water rafting, glacier hiking, bungee-jumping, sky-diving, horse-riding… On the North Island, you'll find hot springs – pure bliss – and off the coast of Auckland, some of the most amazing beaches you'll ever see. Take a couple of weeks out to do a classic campervan trip when the islands are at their most Middle Earth-y. New Zealand has its own breed of super lodges in superlative settings, from remote bays to rugged mountaintops and beside lakes so enormous and awe-inspiring it's difficult to comprehend. Visit the small seaside town of Kaikoura, not far from Christchurch, is widely hailed NZ’s most sustainable spot. Known for its resident sperm whale population and regular blue whale sightings, the town has established a community trust, Whale Watch, owned by the local Maori people. Not only is this a multi-award-winning, responsible whale-watching operator, but it reinvests profits in community education and employment, and the local environment. Check out the brilliant Hapuku Tree Houses and Lodge too, with locally sourced food, composting and recycling programmes, salvaged interiors and a native tree-planting scheme.

Where to stay: Matakarui Lodge in Queenstown is the country’s favourite lodge.

Kerala

Kerala, India

Temperature : 31ºC high; 24ºC low Season: dry season/winter Flight time from UK : 10 hours Time difference: GMT+4.5

November marks the beginning of Kerala's dry season and the end of the monsoons, which bring God’s Own Country bursting forth in verdant green, from its palm-lined lakes to the richly biodiverse slopes of the Western Ghats. This is India at its most chilled, its sandy shores quieter than those in Goa , and the scent of Ayurvedic oils in the air. Exploring is a hassle-free delight here – pootling around the backwaters by boat for an insight into local life, or hiring a motorbike to seek out new beaches, or putting up at homestays with families.

Where to stay: The quiet colonial streets of Fort Cochin – one of the most charming places on the entire planet – are home to many lovely places to stay. One of the loveliest is Malabar House , Cochin’s original boutique hotel, arranged riad-like around a courtyard pool. Now their properties include a houseboat on Lake Vembanad.

Valletta, Malta

Temperature : 20°C high; 13°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 3 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Down in the southern Med, between Sicily and the North African coast, November does not mean gloomy dark afternoons and morning frosts. Even though you might spot the odd red telephone box, that’s as far as the British influence extends – sunny Malta gets eight hours of shimmering rays a day this month, while the mercury floats, or perhaps gloats, at around 20°C. Better still, this is a European autumn sun break with more going for it than beaches (though it has those, too). Capital Valletta’s honey-coloured forts are so cinematically good-looking, they starred in Game of Thrones as King’s Landing, and the old town’s palazzos are lately finding new life as high-design hotels, such as millionaire philanthropist Mark Weingard’s upcoming Iniala Malta.

Where to stay: 66 Saint Paul’s on balconied Ursula Street has a tiny rooftop pool. Another option is Domus Zamittello , a restored baroque masterpiece with painted coffered ceilings.

Temperature : 23°C high; 8°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 12 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT+4:45

November is the optimum time for trekking in the Himalayas: it's not too hot, the sky is clear enough to see where you're going, the peaks and high passes are clear enough for trekking, and it's the tail-end of high season. (Note: porters are a common feature of Himalayan trekking, and while this does provide much-needed employment to impoverished rural Nepalese people, you must ask tour operators about policies on porters’ rights, and check the weight of loads they’re expected to carry: 25kg is the recommended maximum). Whichever route you're taking – the Annapurna Circuit and Everest are breathtakingly beautiful at this time of year – you're likely to pass through Kathmandu. The gateway city is a remarkable place to spend a few days in before or after trekking: for the Buddhist monasteries and stupas, gardens, enchanting old buildings and colonial air, shopping and the insanely good street food.

November ushers in Egypt ’s mild winter, more akin to a good summer in England : Cairo this time of year basks in an average temperature of 25°C. It’s ideal weather for exploring the Pyramids of Giza, just a half-hour drive from the chaos of Cairo’s downtown. Tempted to take a boat trip down the Nile? Resist the big cruises, which are notorious for pollution, and opt for a small group sailing excursion on a traditional felucca instead.

Where to stay: At one of Cairo’s most prestigious hotels; the Nile Ritz-Carlton or the The St. Regis Almasa .

Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, USA

Temperature: 21°C high; 2°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 10 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT-8

There's nothing more dazzling than the firework-bright lights of The Strip at night. Nothing more tempting than the red and black flashes of a spinning roulette wheel. Nowhere more excessive, high-octane and brilliantly bonkers than here. And what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Then get the hell out of Vegas on a road trip from here down to New Mexico, through the canyons of Utah via the awesome Grand Canyon. Many national parks have Native American reservations nearby: an area allocated to indigenous people removed from their ancestral lands to make way for the park. If possible, visiting these reservations with a community guide is a great way to learn about the landscape’s history and support their economy. In the Grand Canyon, it’s possible to hike down from the rim into the remote Supai village, home to the Havasupai tribe for more than 1,000 years. Here there’s a campground, lodge, store and café – attempting to hike in and back within a day is not encouraged – but you must reserve in advance to enter.

Where to stay: At Resorts World Las Vegas , the first new resort to be built on the Las Vegas Strip in more than a decade.

Time’s running out to get to Cuba before it’s changed forever. The big resorts haven’t got to all the beaches yet, and Havana still has that rickety, time-warp romanticism going on – but for how long? Warm and sunny November is the ideal time to swing by before crowds fill out December to February. The silver lining? A fast-evolving boutique bar and hotel scene, catering to a more sophisticated traveller: in Havana, the colonial-cool of Twenties-era Casa Habana, or cocktails at 304 O’Reilly, a toy warehouse turned gin bar. Make time to escape to the Caribbean shores of Holguín, where you’ll find small, thatched, barefoot beach hotels with not a hint of a package deal.

Where to stay: Beach-front Villa Maguana is set in the Guantánamo Province of Cuba.

Temperature : 18°C high; 5°C low Season: dry Flight time from UK: 22 hours Time difference : GMT-4

A wild frontier, Patagonia is the vast and empty tip of South America . For every photogenic massif and glacier, there’s about a million more miles of desolate, scrubby steppe. Finding the glimmering diamonds in the rough is half the satisfaction, though: Welsh tea shops, teal lakes and crackling glacial tongues in Argentine Patagonia; then puma-tracking safaris and unforgettable treks in Chilean Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park, accompanied by the unearthly trio of granite peaks that give this rugged wonder its name. Mid- September to early May is the established season; December to February bring hiking hordes. Nip in during November when mild temperatures are ideal for outdoor adventure and spring’s a-blooming. Torres del Paine rewards the effort with several polished overnight options: try the geodesic domes of EcoCamp, or lakeside five-star humdinger Explora, which has views you’ll struggle to believe However, due to a lack of rules around land sales, large swathes of Patagonia have been bought up and turned over to either heavy industry or unscrupulous developers. This isn’t just bad for the natural landscape, but also for the Indigenous peoples for whom this environment is sacred. Make sure to visit national parks and local communities so that your money goes towards the right people and projects. Tour operators such as BlueGreen Adventures employ regional guides and source from locally owned businesses.

“There are no guarantees in life but elk and taxes,” says the Yukon tourist board — but the chances of catching the Northern Lights in this Canadian hinterland are comfortably high. That’s because it’s such a stark wedge of territory — tundra and forests, lakes and mountains, the same size as Spain but home to just 40,000 hardy locals — creating ideally remote, unpolluted conditions for watching those elusive lights dance across the sky. November is considered the beginning of aurora season in most destinations, with some Scandinavian spots not fully open until December, but the Yukon’s nightly shows start as early as August. Still, with enough snow for days of dog-sledding, temperatures have yet to plunge to the fearsome depths of January and February (averaging -22C).

Where to stay: Tagish Wilderness Lodge is in a prime spot for viewing the northern lights. As are the glass chalets at the Yukon River Valley’s Northern Lights Resort & Spa .

Where better than the Great White South for a wintry getaway? Snowscapes don’t get more epic than Antarctica ’s, a bright-white wilderness so pure, you’d swear it’s CGI. A trip to the end of the world is far from barren, though. Keep busy gaping at far-off, frosted summits and colossal, mint-blue icebergs; snapping breaching orcas and stumbling penguins; not to mention getting jelly-legged on homemade Ukrainian vodka at the world’s southernmost pub. Expedition boats visit the peninsula November to March, when the Antarctic summer makes penetrating pack ice possible (temperatures hover around a toasty 1C). Landings get progressively muddier and boot-blighted as the season wears on; find the freshest powder in November, the first time tourism touches the continent after a seven-month break. Just make sure your tour operator is registered with IAATO, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. Membership demands strict adherence to a code of conduct that is respectful of both the landscape and its wildlife.

Where to stay: At Whichaway Camp , on the edge of an ice lake – one of the most exclusive places to stay on the planet.

Temperature: 14°C high; -5°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 10 hours Time difference: GMT-7

In the likes of California , Arizona and Texas , the dusty desert cities have gone hipster; in Colorado, its cute little mountain towns are wending the same way. Telluride’s Victorian streets are now packed with fancy tacos, craft cocktails and bespoke ski shops; Boulder has bicycle cafés with taprooms and espresso bars; Aspen is still Aspen, glamorous and pricey, and resolutely on-trend (farm-to-table restaurants, speakeasies). High up in the Rockies , ski season has started, the towns have recovered from summer madness, but the December masses are yet to invade.

Seoul, South Korea

Temperature: 12°C high; 2°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 11 hours Time difference: GMT+8

Seoul is an exciting city break with just the right mix of ease and exoticism: transport and general infrastructure are both exemplary, and there are also enough Confucian temples and dog cafés to keep a curious foreigner on their toes. South Korea ’s flourishing economy has made its capital a hi-tech, high-design hub, positively pulsing with dynamic and fashionable youth culture. But the remnants of more austere and traditional times remain: cobbled streets and classic architecture , eccentric flea markets and scent-filled street-food alleys. November’s autumn colours make perfect portraits of Seoul’s many parks and hiking trails, while mild temperatures and low rainfall create a sweet spot for pavement-pounding (summer is wet and humid, the winter frigid).

November is a wonderful month for a short break in southern Spain, when the summer crowds have gone home and it's still T-shirt weather. Cádiz is a charming place, hanging off the edge of Spain, bleached white and with the sound of flamenco in the air. A hip new hotel scene is putting Seville in the limelight but still both cities are quieter than touristy Granada and Córdoba. Beyond Marbella's beach clubs, head out to the Sierra de las Nieves national park to go swimming in natural rock pools and kayaking on the dam. Málaga has carved itself a new reputation, with an offshoot of Paris' Pompidou Centre, a glassy cube on the dockside, joining The Picasso, Carmen Thyssen and Contemporary Art museums.

STEAK! TANGO! WINE! FOOTBALL! SHOES! Yes, Buenos Aires is the indisputable heartland of red meat, and red wine (don't tell the French). It's a colourful place: leafy in the north, with faded townhouses fronting beautiful Italianate façades in the south and bright and bold houses in La Boca near the old port. In San Telmo, the rhythm of tango is unmistakable. And the barrio of Boca is so crazy about football even the houses are painted in home colours. But it's a little-known fact that the Argentine city also has some of the best shopping in the world now that creatives are setting up on their own and opening concept stores in Palermo's crumbling casonas.

November is a great month to go to Hong Kong. It's not too steamy for sundowners in one of the rooftop bars overlooking Victoria Harbour, which lights up at 8pm every night for a light show; or for moseying around Chinatown. Foodies are spoilt for choice here, but make like the locals at street-food stalls in Wan Chai. Shopping and art are big business too. What's surprising, though, is the choice of beautiful beaches and hiking trails on surrounding islands such as Lantau and Lamma.

Where to stay: At swish Rosewood Hong Kong , right on the city's harbour.

dubai desert

Temperature : 31°C high; 20°C low Season : winter Flight time from UK: 7h Time difference : GMT +3

November is the start of proper winter in the UK, so you can’t be blamed for craving a dose of serious sunshine. Dubai is a clever contender – far enough away that the weather is almost guaranteed to be perfect but close enough to home that you won’t be struck down with jet lag for the entirety of your stay. Of course, there are glitzy hotels and beach clubs drawing in visitors. But there’s a lesser-known side to the city, too – some of our favourite things to do in Dubai include having supper in the desert at Sonara, where wood-fired pizzas and cocktails are served among the dunes and the opportunity to go on a desert safari, with Platinum Desert Safari.

Where to stay: Book into new opening Atlantis the Royal – a bells-and-whistles stay that bills itself as “the most ultra-luxury experiential resort in the world”.

Spring in Japan gets a lot of airtime. But for those in the know, autumn is every bit as beautiful as the trees flame into burnt orange and glorious red hues. In the capital, spend days hopping between Tokyo’s best restaurants and art galleries before catching one of the super-efficient trains to Kyoto, where the temples are surrounded by beautiful autumn foliage, or Osaka, where you can visit beautiful landscapes such as Minoo Falls. Just north of Tokyo, Nikko has World Heritage-listed temples and widescreen views of burnished gold and orange.

Where to stay: There are big hitters in Tokyo such as the Aman and the Mandarin Oriental . Try the Ace in Kyoto , or book the St Regis Osaka , which is spread across the top 16 floors of a skyscraper.

Temperature : 6°C high; 2°C low Season : winter Flight time from UK: 2h 40m Time difference : GMT +1

This is not the destination for a blast of sunshine and heat. But it can't be denied that some cities are simply better in winter . Toward the end of the month, you might get snow – and the city looks especially lovely when dusted with a frosting of white. You can eat at some of the world's best restaurants , such as Frantzen if you're planning to splash the cash, and you'll also find some of the best bars in the world here, too . Lucy's Flower Shop is set in the basement of a centuries-old building and serves up some of the city's best cocktails.

Where to stay: Ett Hem is an ultra-stylish townhouse hotel that's been drawing discerning travellers since 2012.

Moving around Moscow

Moving around Moscow Russia is complicated. Luckily, we had a car. But even with a car, you might find yourself stuck in traffic jams for hours. By the way, locals use traffic apps to avoid jams. It’s best to combine car and metro sometimes. Our friends live in one of the apartment block districts. My first impression – wow, these houses are huge! Russians like to build big. And they have to – with an eight million people city! The house we stayed in had 20 blocks, and it’s not even the biggest out there.

If you are planning to stay in a hotel, here are some good budget friendly options for centrally located hotels – Mayakovka House 3*, Matreshka Hotel 3*, CityComfort Hotel Arbatskaya 3*

If you are looking for a European style pedestrian  street with shops, cafes and galleries – have a look at old Arbat. The street is not too long and there is a lot to see: many historical buildings, monuments and Russian style gift shops. Although it’s quite commercialized, we loved it nevertheless – it’s a nice break from heavy traffic of other main streets. Make sure to check out Varenichnaya N.1 with it’s famous Soviet style food. The prices are very good and the food is delicious! Definitely one of the best places to visit in Moscow!

Metro in Moscow Russia

Some Moscow metro stations are true pieces of art. The metro was open in 1935 and today it is 5th longest in the world. We visited 3 stations – Kievskaya, Ploshad’ Revolyutsii and Belorusskiy Vokzal.

Radisson River Cruise

A great way to end the day in Moscow is to board one of Radisson River cruise ships-restaurants. The ticket costs 750 Rubles (10€). Departure from Radisson Royal Hotel (hotel “Ukraina”). During the 2,5 hour cruise you can observe well lit facades of the famous buildings and parks, while enjoying a cup of coffee or a delicious dinner. Some of the famous attractions along the way include Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University,Central House of Artists, Peter the Great monument, The Cathedral of Christ the Savior, The Kremlin, Saint Basil`s Cathedral, Kotelnichevskaya Embankment Building and many more.

Some other cool places we visited:

General impression

Yes, we loved Moscow, although the weather was nasty, it was cold and dark and we got splashed with grease from passing cars. It’s all part of the experience. We loved the people. People are really friendly and nice. Of course, there are many tourist traps, just like in any big city these days. But somehow we felt a little but like home. The city is overwhelming – it’s huge! It’s difficult to move around by foot – huge distances are exhausting. So bare in mind – you will need to use the metro a lot and make a list of your preferred places to visit in Moscow. And it’s hell at peak times – very crowded. So planning your visit is essential, especially if you are looking to visit multiple places. I’d say – one major attraction per day is enough. Just take it easy – beauty is in small details. Take your time to slow down and notice them! Oh, almost forgot – please, PLEASE, don’t come here in winter months, because it’s just so much prettier in summer!

Thanks for the post, I really wanna go to Moscow now! 🙂 I’ve seen so many pictures of the metro and it is absolutely stunning.

I beg to differ on visiting during the winter. I was there in January 2017 just after Orthodox Christmas and New Year celebrations, and the city was absolutely magical. Blanketed in snow, with colorful, sparkling Christmas light displays all over town, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. We were there for a specific reason (auditions for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, so the dates were fixed), and I can’t lie–January in Moscow was a tough sell. But by the end of the first full day, every single client with me was completely enthralled by this urban winter wonderland. Perhaps at other times in the dead of winter it might be less charming, but in mid-January it was gorgeous and memorable. If one is dressed appropriately for the cold, it’s a truly special time to be there. I expect to take another group in October and am a little disappointed that I can’t give them that same experience.
