Simpson Mine Shaft
This mine shaft is of great importance to Canadian history and metal manufacturing. It is the location of the first copper mine built in Canada in 1846. At this Simpson museum are over 7000 artifacts relating to Canada’s early mining life, domestic life and industry. Today, Canada is one of the world’s major producers of copper, making this the early birthplace of one of Canada’s most lucrative industries making this hidden gem in Ontario well worth a visit.

Historic Mine Trail
A long series of outdoor trails encompass over two hours of walkable trail to discover. The routes follow important historical sites in the history-making of Bruce Mines. For example, one trail is named after a jail site that used to house Ontario prisoners during the early mining era. This might be a small town, but it has a big history hidden in its nature, waiting for travellers to discover.

Bruce Mines United Church
This is a century-old church constructed by early Presbyterian settlers, a relic of history still frequented today and available for public visit. A special attraction that draws visitors is a century-old hand-carved copy of The Lord’s Prayer, made in 1891 as a wedding gift for a parishioner’s daughter.

Group of Seven – Bruce Mines
This Group of Seven interpretive panel located in Bruce Mines in Ontario’s Algoma Country. The interpretive installation depicts the painting of Tom Thomson’s of View Over a Lake, Shore with Houses, c. 1913. Sit and look over the site that inspired this incredible work of art. The Group of Seven was a group of Canadian Landscape painters from 1920 to 1933. They believed that distinct art could be developed through direct contact with the incredible nature of the Canadian landscape and initiated the first major Canadian national art movement.

Bruce Mines is a quiet town on the shores of the North Channel of Lake Huron. It is located on the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 17) and is tucked into a sheltered bay. Celebrating 22 years in 2024! The Sylvan Circle Tour is a self-guided art tour held each September during the beautiful fall colour season.
Travel the picturesque countryside between Echo Bay and Bruce Mines and meet over fifty of the area’s finest artists and artisans at township & community halls on the tour. At each location, you’ll find unique, one-of-a-kind creations, perfect for your home or for gift giving.
The route is well-signed. Exhibitors will demonstrate during the day and local groups sell food and beverages at many sites. A complete route map can be found on the Sylvan Circle Tour website.

Bruce Mines
Revel in serene hills that roll gently in pastoral beauty or taper off to share a big sky view as the Trail guides you to the Town of Bruce Mines. Nestled on the shores of Lake Huron, and located directly on the Trans-Canada Highway, Bruce Mines is a scenic community rich in history that also serves as the civic centre for the neighbouring Township of Plummer Additional. The Town was founded in 1846 as Canada’s first copper mine and is the first Northern Ontario town to be incorporated. Bruce Mines is home to all types of accommodations from camping to full service motels to cottages that include a unique stay in an island lighthouse. The local restaurants serve great food with Northern Ontario hospitality and are known regionally for their homemade pies and butter tarts.
Visitors to this vibrant community can connect to local history with a visit to the museum or a tour of the Simpson Mineshaft , relax on the shores by the public marina, or stage for a rugged excursion on the nearby Voyageur Hiking Trail. In early fall, fortunate travellers in the countryside may catch the exultant rise of Sandhill Cranes as they gather in fields in their hundreds during their annual migration. The community provides several amenities to visitors including groceries, restaurants and free WIFI at the library, making Bruce Mines an ideal stop on your trip along the Lake Huron North Channel.
Just under 4 km north of the Trail, you can visit the Meadowview Alpaca Farm . They offer tours and sell many products made with alpaca wool. If you miss them on the Trail, you can visit their booth at the Johnson Township Farmers Market in Desbarats.

Sylvan Circle Tour – A drive-focused experience that can be followed via much of the local Great Lakes Waterfront Trail connecting Bruce Mines to Echo Bay and looping back through the scenic Sylvan Valley.

Trans-Canada Trail – The Trans-Canada Trail network stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, forming the largest trail network in the world. The Lake Huron North Channel section of the Trail is designated as Trans-Canada Trail.
Voyageur Hiking Trail – The Voyageur Hiking Trail is a collection of wilderness hiking opportunities totaling roughly 1100km in length between Sudbury and Thunder Bay. The Voyageur Hiking Trail and is part of the Trans Canada Trail network. Connect: via Old Garden River Road and Landslide Rd to Hiawatha Highlands Conservation Area.

2. Cloudslee Cemetery
Travelling East from Sault Ste. Marie on Highway 17 go to Bruce Mines and turn left on Highway 638 North. Go 2.6 Kilometers to Cloudslee Road. Turn right and Cloudslee Cemetery is 4.9 Kilometers on the right.
3. Humphrey Cemetery
Humphrey Cemetery is located in Plummer Additional. It is 10.5 Km from the turn off at Hwy. 17 at Bruce Mines or 2 Km north east of Rydal Bank on Hwy 638. Turn left at Nethery Road, a dead end road, and the cemetery is located immediately on one's right at the top of the hill beside a large gravel pit.
4. Plummer Cemetery
At Bruce Mines on Hwy 17, turn onto Hwy 683. Proceed approximately 14.5 kms to Rydal Bank and turn left onto Plummer Road. Proceed 5.5 kms then turn right onto West side road for 2kms. The Plummer Cemetery is on the right.
5. Sands Cemetery
Travelling East from Sault Ste Marie on Highway 17 turn North at Bruce Mines on Highway 638. Proceed for approximately 15 kms and the cemetery is on the right.
6. Trunk Road Cemetery
Turn north on to Highway 638 at Bruce Mines, go 1 kilometer and turn right onto Trunk Road.
7. Rock Lake Aberdeen Cemetery
Travelling East from Sault Ste Marie on Highway 17 turn North at Bruce Mines on Highway 638. Proceed for approximately 17.5 kms and the cemetery is on the left.
