A Little Adventure… Taking a Camel Safari into Pushkar’s Desert

Last updated on August 20, 2023 by Shannon

taking the bus to pushkar

The dilapidated bus that was to be our next means of transportation was my next “welcome to India moment.” The first was the commuter train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad .

In this case, the bus has seen more days on this earth than I have, and the last paint job was administered around the time I weaned from a bottle.

It was a piece of work, let me tell you! I often have to cover my arm and shoulder to protect myself from the slanting sun rays, but in this case, I didn’t wish for tinted windows because the windows were already so dirty and cloudy that light could only seep through.

Getting to Pushkar, India

With no direct trains between  Udaipur and Pushkar , my cousin and I de-trained in Ajmer, a heaving, hot city.

Navigating the clogged streets was like a game of Pac-Man, at every corner a cow, cart, rickshaw, or car to mow us down. From the bus station—which we made it to unscathed—we took the local bus into Pushkar, about 40 kilometers away. My cousin shared with me  stories of the dilapidated chicken buses she encountered during her time in Guatemala with the Peace Corps, but this sketchy, shuddering bus was first for me.

As the only foreigners on the bus, they locals gave us a bit more space than the others. And that doesn’t mean we could sprawl, it just meant that no one else leveraged their bodies onto our two-person bus seat.

camel reflection in the sand

We’re both tall and had belongings too, which also afforded us the courtesy of “private” seats. So, for that bus ride we sat squished thigh to thigh with both of our packs perched precariously on our laps as we navigated the winding roads. But even the blatant stares of curiosity couldn’t distract me from the sheer drop offs that fell away from one side of the road.

As I pondered my death by way of ricocheting from a cliff, several men and women on the bus settled into their seats and locked their gazes to my every move. I talked about the staring in Ahmedabad. At the ashram museum it was coupled with people following us, which wasn’t tolerable, but as time passes I am used to this custom on unabashedly staring at foreigners.

For the locals, there is no shame or awkwardness. And so, they marveled as I applied chapstick. And the women were tickled when we had a moment of re-arranging the bags, everyone’s eyes goggled when I removed my jacket and showed a peek of my now-naked forearm.

Alas though, all good things must come to an end, and so did the “Shannon and Helen Two Bag Circus Show.”  We shot smiles to everyone on the bus, shouldered our bags when the bus driver unloaded them for us, and we hoofed it for the ten-minute walk into the center of Pushkar.

Where to Stay in Pushkar

Our first order of business was to unload our bags in a guesthouse. But we hadn’t booked one ahead of time. We had arrived in early afternoon and we knew we could easily find a place to sleep with just a short wander. The touts were ready as we walked into town, and although we often bypass this cluster, we both accepted a card from a young boy. He assured us that we would love Hotel Tulsi Palace if we followed him.

We had picked out a few places in our Lonely Planet , which we love for transportation and overviews, but the accommodation has been hit or miss. So, we shooed him a bit and went in search of the recommended hotels.

tulsi palace kids

What a bust! They weren’t nice and were overpriced—likely exactly because they are listed in the guidebook.  We returned to the touts, found the boy and followed him through a maze of side streets until we finally arrived at a clean hotel off of the bustling tourist road.

Fast forward ten minutes and we are cozied up with a cup of chai from the owner of the hotel, a mom of several adorable kids who filed past us. She settled us into a super clean room with two beds and hot showers for precisely the price we wanted to pay.

My cousin and I had decided to take a camel safari and she was happy to help us pick one out. We choose anywhere between one hour camel adventures and multi-day camel safaris.

Although I know multi-day trips are popular, and it’s gorgeous to sleep in the desert, but neither my cousin nor I wanted to ride for more than a couple of hours. With the mom’s help, we booked ourselves on a two-hour ride that would take us out of the city and into the surrounding desert.

What to Expect on a Camel Ride in Pushkar

Rising early the next morning, my cousin and I donned our dirtiest outfits that we didn’t mind getting stinky and dusty. With traveling, we’re constantly playing a game to assess and keep clean the freshest clothes until we can find a chance to do laundry. And today was camel riding day—one of the many fun things to do in Pushkar !

We ventured out the front door, and there, in the middle of the paved street with  motorcycles zooming past was our transport for the day: two towering camels named Johnny and Krishna. Each one was accompanied by a super-tanned Indian man attempting to get his camel to lay on the ground so that we could climb onto the camels’ backs.

pushkar camel safari

With a bit of a jolt and some steep angles, we rose into the air and soon towered over everyone on the streets. Once we were up and had our feet securely in the straps, the camel handler clicked his tongue and the Johnny and Krishna started off at a slow and leisurely stroll out of the city.

Pushkar is a small city, so it took just a few minutes to reach the outskirts. At that point the guides were done walking so they easily scaled each camel and road in the seat behind us, steering the camels into the open desert.

desert sand

A camel’s gait is unlike any other animal. At this point I have only really ridden elephants and horses. Instead of the smooth horse gait, or the huge sway of an elephant, this was a more plodding and level gait than the elephant but definitely not anything like the even and measured gait of a horse.

The further we rode into the desert, the fewer people and dwellings we passed. Just a handful of people had built homes into the deep sand. It was a rural life just a short walk outside of the city.

Our guide explained that these half-naked children running past us would never see the inside of a schoolhouse, and the girls would likely be married off as young as possible.

We plodded past them and I felt fleeting moments rush over me. Sadness, pity, humility, empathy. I often try to use my money to support local economies when I travel, but there is a futility to it all when I spot moments like this on the road.

krishna the camel in pushkar

And within a flash we were even past the most remote dwellings and those concerns also passed, they were ruminations to resume another day. In these travels, I see so much that in the moment seems like so simple a problem, that there should be a solution I should help find to affect change. But the moment passes. The thoughts are fleeting and the realization that no solution is as simple as it looks .

Johnny and Krishna plodded on, occasionally trotting, deeper into the desert. A bit later, we took a break under a weak, piddling tree that provided a mere modicum of shade. My cousin and I took pictures with the camels—or at least we tried! These camels proved true all the rumors I had heard about camels being mean and snippy—they really are!

camel photo!

Our guides asked the camels to lay down and then indicated that we could stand near them for some pictures. Krishna the Camel, however, was in a contrary mood. He whipped his head around and tried to nip at me as I approached.

At other times, they bared their teeth and thrashed their head when my cousin and I appeared within in their vision range. Johnny was a character, he let out some very nasty (but entirely funny) belches.

camel laying in the sand

Their antics and bad behavior were funny though, the handlers were there to keep us safe. But my cousin and I maintained a constant vigilance because those camels wanted to cause us bodily harm. But only us, of course, they wouldn’t dare do that to their owners and were perfectly sweet to the two camel handlers.

It was a fun day and after the photos we plodded back into town, changed our clothes and sought out a chai to relax—another successful day!

History of Camels in India

camel safari in gujarat

Camels have played an important role in the history of India for thousands of years. They were first domesticated in the Arabian Peninsula, and were introduced to India around the 4th century BCE by the Persian Empire.

In India, camels were used for a variety of purposes, including transportation, farming, and military operations. They were particularly well-suited to the harsh desert and semi-arid regions of the country, where they could go for long periods without water and carry heavy loads over rough terrain.

In the early 20th century, the demand for camels began to decline due to the increasing availability of motorized vehicles and the development of alternative transportation methods. However, camels continue to play a significant role in the culture and economy of India, particularly in rural areas where they are still used for transportation and farming.

Today, camels are also used for tourism, with camel safaris and camel rides being popular attractions in many parts of India. Camels are also featured in traditional festivals and ceremonies, and are celebrated in literature, art, and folklore.

Best Places to Ride a Camel in India

Although we loved our small came safari in Pushkar, India, there are several other places where you can go on a camel safari or ride a camel—many of them offer longer trips and to places far deeper in the Rajasthani desert. Popular options include:

  • Rajasthan : Rajasthan is known for its vast deserts and camel safaris are a popular activity in this state. Some of the popular places for camel safaris in Rajasthan include Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur.
  • Gujarat : Gujarat is also home to several deserts and camel safaris are a popular activity here. Some of the places where you can go on a camel safari in Gujarat include the Rann of Kutch and the Little Rann of Kutch.
  • Ladakh : Ladakh is a popular destination for adventure seekers and camel safaris are a popular activity here. The camel safaris in Ladakh take you through the breathtaking landscape of the region, including the vast stretches of the Indus Valley and the stunning mountains of the Himalayas.
  • Pushkar : Pushkar is a small town in Rajasthan known for its annual camel fair. Obviously I think this is a great place to go on a camel ride and experience the local culture and traditions!
  • Jaipur : Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is another popular destination for camel safaris. The city is known for its rich history and culture, and a camel safari through the city’s streets and surrounding areas is a great way to explore the region.

It is always a good idea to do some research and book your camel safari through a reputable operator to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Quick Tips: How to Take a Camel Ride in India

where to ride a camel in rajasthan india

Where to Organize a Camel Safari

Pushkar is a great spot for a quick ride just to get the experience but most of the multi-day stops leave out of Jaisalmer, India. Both of these are in Rajasthan, and which you choose largely depends on the length of your trip. Are you keen to take an epic adventure and use the camel as your transport to a new town in India? Then head to Jaisalmer. If you’re just interested in taking a camel ride, then Pushkar is one of the most famous spots for camels in the entire country (they have an annual camel fair here each fall.

How Long is a Camel Safari

A couple hours will satisfy if you have a passing curiosity; the overnight experiences seem ideal with multi-day trips perhaps a bit too long unless you’re a desert and camel enthusiast.

Camel Safari Cost

A few hours shouldn’t cost more than US $15. Price the overnights with several operators to get the best bargain… and always negotiate!

Thanks for the tips and photos. I was trying to arrange a camel trip from home. Now I will wait until I get there and let my host help me get it all sorted out.

Glad you found it helpful! I definitely think that you can easily find a camel trip arranged through any guesthouse in town, for sure. Best of luck and have a great adventure! :)

What a great trip!!!!!!! I love the first picture. Since we are no where near any camel like places, I’ve taken a few camel rides at the Bronx Zoo with my son. It was so fun and I promised him when he gets older we’re going to do it for real:)

Camel rides at home work too if you can’t get to India – but it was pretty neat to be on the camel in the desert surroundings – more atmospheric :)

Nice write up. India is still not on my list of places I want to see.

Got your postcard today! My kids (12,10,8) LOVE it when you send a postcard. We all love your blog and can’t wait for your updates! Take care and stay safe!

Oh I love the camels!!! Those are awesome!

CAMEL SAFARI INSIDE KUTCH

b8

As we all know Kutch has a prominent place in the aspect of tourism. Camel safari is the topic that is to be discussed below. In addition to this Kutch has also developed in other aspects such as camel riding. As we all see camels coming and people who are small in aspect of age climb that and go to ride. But this is said to be unique in the aspect of Kutch region in Gujarat state. Camel safari is the most excited thing in the region of Kutch. Camels are taken to long distances generally when people of Kutch provide a ride. People around Kutch provide this excited ride. Foreign people also show keen interest in enjoying the ride. People come from all over world and climb on to camel. This happens on a large scale only during the months of Rann utsav that is from the months of December till February. The land of Kutch is said to be colorful on the day of full moon and also it is said to be the land of art music and also dance. Camel safari has a good name in countries such as United States of America and Africa. Camel safari is now a days made very much official and costly.

From the past five or six years it has grown up into a large estate of tourism and floating people from all over the world. Cultural interactions are said to be famous in the Kutch region.

Camel safari is mainly done based upon the interest of children and then it matters about adults. Small children really feel excited when they see such large creatures as they are different from human beings. As at that age they have a lot of curiosity they develop a strong desire to climb on that and ride as other people do. This has made the people of Kutch to earn as much money as possible from these aspects. Some old people who also have a small wish or they feel the camel safari as crazy try to climb the camel and have a ride. Kutch people are really lucky as they get revenue based on this aspect.

Kutch and Rann Utsav , 2023, 2024, Camel safari kutch, desert safari kutch, rann utsav

Here is major attraction of Kutch, Gujarat, Rann Utsav, India

Pooja Bhula

Discover the delights of the desert and the ongoing Rann Utsav in Kutch Under the gaze of the full moon, when the sands of the white rann (desert) glimmer at night, it’s breathtaking! With this description from fellow travellers, I couldn’t wait for the night to arrive. Soon enough, it did. While the full moon did show up, only the stars glimmered. And by the way, it’s not the sand that is white, but the carpets of salt that cover parts of the rann. Yes, salt. You have to taste it to believe it. The view wasn’t as mind-blowing as I had expected, but then again, three busloads of people can make any place seem less serene. This was our second visit to the white rann in 12 hours—my friends and I had come here in the evening for the sunset. Other tourists were going on camel rides, clicking the crimson sun and dancing to folk music…But for me, the beauty lay beyond the crowd, where I could see the rann and the blue sky meet.

Our tents at Dhordo

War, Peace and Love

Early next morning, we left for the Indo-Pak border. Even though nations are only a few centuries old, tools of patriotism like national songs, movies, news reports…are used so well that the border, as a tourist spot, needs no marketing. People will visit anyway. From Tent City Dhordo, where we were staying, the border is almost a four-hour drive. In between, we stopped to hand over our cellphones and cameras to the Border Security Force (BSF) officials near India Bridge. You’re not even allowed to photograph the bridge. Barbed wire fences indicate that the border is not too far; while you can’t go right there, the watch spot is just a few feet away. Tourists are allowed here only during the Utsav. A BSF jawan cued us in about the machinery and equipment, the difference between BSF and the army, the climate and geography of Kutch and more… Interestingly, Kutch gets its name from kutchua (tortoise) because of its shape. Not too far, he informs us, is the largest breeding ground for flamingos in India. The bunkers you see are only used during war, but this border is “peaceful”.

While some found it interesting, others complained it wasn’t worth the time. For me, it triggered memories of KN Daruwalla’s Love Across The Salt Desert that I had read in school. On our way back, I pondered over the charm of old love stories, Najab and Fatima (lead characters) and Daruwalla’s description of the desert as a mirage in the heat where “a depression in the sand looked like a splash of water, a freak, stunted cactus gave the appearance of a grove, and a camel looked like a huge prehistoric animal on the move.

” The vast stretch of desert and nothingness may bore some, but it brought me deep calm. I wondered what it would be like to cross the border on a camel. Do people still smuggle tendu leaves out? What’s life like on the other side? Do spice sellers still live there?

View from Kalo Doongar

Wildlife and Mythology

Soon, it was time to hop off again, this time at Kalo Doogar (black hill), the highest point in Kutch. Guides say that when the Lord Dattatreya stopped at the black hill and found starving jackals, he chopped of parts of his body and gave it to them. As they ate, his body regenerated itself. Wildlife lovers will be glad to know that jackals come to the temple everyday to eat. For nature buffs, the black hill, white sand and turquoise sea create a lovely canvas.

Adventure and Hospitality

We returned to Dhordo by night and the cultural programmes had begun. We didn’t attend them, but we got reviews, “The folk performaces are really good and events are interactive.” At an extra cost you can do dirt biking, desert safaris, hot air ballooning and more. For every meal, you’re offered a combination of cuisines: Kutchi, north Indian, south Indian, Indianised Italian and Chinese. The Tent City is huge, so jeeps and golf carts ply to and fro to take people across. The simple-looking tents are clean, comfortable and mosquito free. A heater-cum-cooler is provided and the attached bathroom is basic, but spacious, stocked with toiletries. Of all the things, what I won’t forget is the hospitality.

Modern crafts at Hodco

Craft and Colour

We were eager to spend at least a day visiting the villages and after interacting with craftsmen at the Tent City’s craft bazaar, we decided on Hodco. The village lies in the heart of Banni grasslands; craftsmen here deal in leather punching, mirror work and embroidery. Their circular houses wear a conical hat and their women, colourful garments and bold metallic jewellery. In the past they embroidered with passion in the heart and art in the mind, but now they tailor their offerings to suit the cost-conscious, industrial culture. As a result, today, the demand for the old work is such that designers are willing to buy garments previously worn by the women of the house. For those interested, homestays are available.

Vijay Vilas Palace

Beach Buzz and Royalty

We spent the night at Mandvi, and once the sun rose, we headed to the beach it is famous for. Here you’ll find windmills, a few shacks and coconut and chatwallas peddling up and down. The beach has the Indian stamp of litter, but the blue water is delightful. We also visited Vijay Vilas Palace, a summer palace turned heritage hotel, where several movies have been shot. Those interested in architecture should visit Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal in Bhuj to see a blend of Indian and European styles.

Before leaving Mandvi, we relished Osho’s Kutchi thali. Even on a Sunday afternoon, when most shopkeepers in Bhuj had pulled their shutters down, we managed to find an antique shop that stocks everything from embroidered and painted fabrics and coloured stones to tribal accessories and coins. We bought a little of everything.

Camel Safari

Camel Safari in India

What is camel safari.

camel safari in gujarat

What better way to explore the desert than on the back of an animal that has for aeons been associated with these immense tracts of sand? A camel safari is the perfect way to discover desert regions – especially areas as historically and culturally rich as Rajasthan, or as vast and awe-inspiring as the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. Ensconce yourself contentedly on the back of an ungulate and admire the sand dunes around you extending for miles – as far as your eye can see. A camel can take you places where a jeep or ordinary motor vehicle will struggle to reach (and only the camel can successfully navigate the dunes). Not for nothing is the camel known as the ‘ship of the desert’; for centuries, it was the only means of transport available in these often inhospitable stretches of land. A camel safari, then, makes for a magical journey, one unlike any other you’ll ever experience.

There’s probably no better (or more romantic) way of seeing Rajasthan than on the back of a dromedary. Crisscross the sands during the day – get up close with Rajasthan’s splendid architecture and wonderful hospitality – and sleep under the stars at night. Boasting the awesome vastness of the Thar Desert, Rajasthan is quite obviously the top destination for camel safaris in India. You can tread the caravan routes of old, passing hamlets and desert communities almost unchanged over time. Most of the safaris take place around Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The classic camel safari (among the many worth experiencing) is the Bikaner-Jaisalmer one, which covers (approximately) 25km-30km every day over 11 days. Safaris are of varying duration – you can choose from half- and full-day journeys to month-long tests of endurance. Up towards India’s northern extremity is the stunning Nubra Valley, where safaris are conducted on the rare double-humped Bactrian camel. A ride on the back of one of these magnificent creatures allows you to delight in the valley’s quaint villages and Buddhist traditions, making for a truly memorable experience. Know more about Desert and Camel Safari in India .

Best season in India

In Rajasthan, the winter months (October to March) are ideal, while summer is the best time for a camel safari in Nubra Valley.

Camel Safari sites in India

Rajasthan – Around Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur (also Nagaur, Pushkar, Shekhawati) Ladakh – Nubra Valley (from Hundar to Diskit)

Prior to booking a camel safari, choose your operator with care – make sure it actually is providing the facilities it claims to be doing so. Bring a padded cushion to sit on – a journey on a camel’s back can get rather uncomfortable! Also bring along sunscreen, sunglasses, moisturizer, lip salve, flashlight, toilet paper and a towel, along with plenty of water and warm clothing. Before you embark on a camel safari, here are a few important things to keep in mind: 1. When mounting a camel, lean back 2. When the camel stands up, or sits down, lean back and grip the reins firmly 3. Always grip the reins when the camel is moving – you will be rocked back and forth, though gently! 4. When turning right, pull the right rein towards your right; when turning left, pull the left rein to your left 5. When the camel gallops, pull both reins together slowly, and give the camel a slight kick on both sides 6. To get the camel to stop, pull both reins backwards quickly 7. To get the camel to sit down, pull both reins 8. To get the camel to start walking, pull the reins up 9. Avoid provoking a camel – and don’t give it any food!

Medical concerns

A camel safari can be a test of stamina – especially if you’re planning a ride of a week or more. Even the short-duration safaris demand a decent level of physical fitness. If you’re afflicted by a medical condition, bring the necessary prescribed medication – but it is advised that you get an all-clear from your doctor before going on a camel safari. Also, carry anti-malaria tablets and a first-aid kit. Above all, since you’re out in the desert, drink plenty of water to keep yourself rehydrated.

Ecological concerns

The desert is as ecologically fragile as other ecosystems. So do leave it as clean as you found it – and don’t litter.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

It is a must-see because of its elaborate design, opulent entrances, and breathtaking view of the desert. The fort’s exquisitely carved Jain Temples give even more historical grandeur to the area.

Architectural Style:

The elaborate havelis of the city, which highlight the luxury of the merchant elite throughout the Middle Ages, add to its allure even outside the fort. Architectural wonders Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, and Nathmal Ki Haveli are decorated with elaborate carvings, jharokhas (balconies), and facades that take tourists back in time to the Rajputana dynasty.

The opportunity for a camel safari in Jaisalmer or to take a 4×4 vehicle across the undulating dunes is provided by the desert safari, which is a classic experience. The city holds several festivals and cultural events all year, the most notable of which is the Desert Festival. This three-day festival honours the cultural legacy of the desert with traditional dances, camel racing, and local handicraft exhibits.

Regional Food:

Jaisalmer food

The gastronomic scene of Jaisalmer is a gourmet adventure with a mouthwatering variety of Rajasthani flavours. The emphasis on hearty and flavorful meals in the native cuisine, which includes the well-known dal baati churma and ker sangri, reflects the desert lifestyle. In addition to providing a gastronomic experience, the fort’s rooftop eateries provide expansive views of the city below.

Shopping Spree:

With its vivid fabrics, handicrafts, and jewellery, Jaisalmer’s bustling marketplaces are a shopper’s dream. Renowned for its vibrant vendors offering a wide range of products, from jewellery and traditional Rajasthani puppets to embroidered fabrics and leather items, are the Sadar Bazaar and Manak Chowk.

Jaisalmer’s captivating camel safari usually starts outside the city, creating the perfect atmosphere for an amazing desert experience. Here, the golden tones of the surroundings entice you, and the scent of the desert fills the air.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by their regal friends, the dependable camels. Along the way, these gentle giants provide a means of transportation and as travelling companions across the fascinating Thar Desert. Local tour leaders knowledgeable about the desert environment’s subtleties accompany the excursion, enhancing the experience with a layer of cultural depth.

A desert trip begins from the beginning, which might be a tent in the desert or a site picked out among the vast dunes. The charm of Jaisalmer’s scenery emerges when visitors ride their camels and set off on this epoch-spanning journey, promising an adventure that winds through the undulating dunes, affording views of the desert’s majesty and the peace that exists beyond the city’s busy streets.

A camel safari in Jaisalmer is an amazing experience that forges a strong bond between riders and the captivating desert scenery. With their characteristic swaying walk, camels transform into elegant vehicles that move across the dunes with a natural ease that mimics the beat of the desert.

Participants are taken to a strange world where the stillness of the desert surrounds them, and are only sometimes disturbed by the gentle patter of camel footsteps. The vastness of the surroundings creates a deep bond with nature, and the stillness of the desert turns into a symphony.

The sensory experience is enhanced by this calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere, which enables visitors to recognise the finer details of the desert’s natural grandeur. A mystical trip into the very essence of the desert, where the interplay of light and sand produces a canvas of unsurpassed splendour and the endless horizon beckons with the promise of adventure and discovery, is what a camel safari in Jaisalmer becomes.

10 1

Enchanting Sunsets and Sunrises:

The breathtaking sight of the desert, dawn, or sunset is undoubtedly the highlight of a camel safari in Jaisalmer. This enchanted scene is created as the sky changes colour in a kaleidoscope pattern, illuminating the large dunes with an ethereal glow. In this moment of pure transcendence, nature uses colours beyond description to paint the canvas of the desert.

The shifting hues of the sky produce a spectacular picture as the sun elegantly rises or sets. The bright pink, orange, and red hues bounce off the sand grains, giving the scenery a brilliant vitality. Bathed in this heavenly light, the desert becomes a stage for a visual symphony that captivates the senses and ingrains itself into everyone’s mind.

The camels’ stoic silhouettes against the changing sky’s colours make the sight more lyrical. These wonderful creatures’ outlines mix perfectly with the undulating dunes, becoming a part of the desert’s living artwork. This idyllic scene perfectly captures the spirit of a desert safari: a well-balanced blend of the natural world’s splendour and the rich cultural legacy of camel travel. Since dawn and sunset are such profoundly alluring times of day, many safari operators carefully arrange their itineraries around them. The camel safari is not just a trip across the desert; rather, it is a well-planned experience that takes place against the majestic backdrop of nature. This is made possible by participant positioning that allows them to watch these breathtaking displays.

These breathtaking moments—the sun setting or the first light of dawn lighting up the dunes—become the heart-stopping pinnacle of the camel safari. They encapsulate the essence of Jaisalmer, an old city where time appears to have stopped and where each dawn and sunset serves as a reminder of the desert’s ageless appeal.

Camping Opportunities During a Camel Safari in Jaisalmer

Safari in the Thar Desert

Nighttime camping in the desert is an incredibly immersive experience that adds to the charm of Jaisalmer’s camel safaris. Travellers get the rare chance to spend the night beneath the vast, starry canvas of the Thar Desert as the sun sets over the golden sands.

Nestled against the serene desert landscape, tent accommodations offer the ideal combination of cosiness and genuineness. These tents are designed to recreate Rajasthani culture’s ancient elegance, providing a comfortable haven amidst the great expanse. The warm illumination of the lanterns creates an intimate mood, adding to the wonderful aura. The tranquillity of the Thar envelops travellers beneath the starry sky of the desert. The desert night’s stillness transforms into a calming song, and the unbroken vistas of the sky above are captivating. The camping experience gains something magical from each sparkle in the night sky that tells a tale.

The focal point of the evening is a campfire, around which stories of the desert are exchanged and camaraderie is sparked. As they enjoy the warmth of the fire and the traditional Rajasthani food, travellers congregate around. The rich flavours of regional cuisine and the aromas of spices heighten the senses, providing a gastronomic trip that reflects the authenticity of the desert surroundings.

The camp is enveloped in the calm of the Thar as night falls, offering a break from the bustle of contemporary life. Under the starry sky, the soft swing of the tent transforms into a cradle and the rhythmic noises of the desert night into a lullaby. Time seems to stand still on this night, enabling visitors to experience the desert’s essence in its most unadulterated state.

Travellers awaken to a fresh day in the middle of the desert each morning as the first rays of dawn wash the dunes with gentle hues. In addition to giving the camel safari an extra element of authenticity, night camping provides a deep connection with the Thar Desert, which stays in the memory of those lucky enough to spend a night beneath its starry embrace.

Camel Safaris in Jaisalmer and Bikaner: What to Know

Explore the Desert on a Camel Safari in India

camel safari in gujarat

Like in Jordan , one of the most unforgettable and enchanting experiences you can have in India is to ride through the rippling, windswept desert on camel back and camp out under the stars. Taking a camel safari will also give you the opportunity to witness the rustic, rural desert life of India. While the desert can be barren, it's also surprisingly well populated. Here's what you need to know to plan your trip.

Where Can You Go on a Camel Safari?

The most popular place for camel safaris in India is in the desert around Jaisalmer , in Rajasthan. To have the best experience, it's important to consider which location is most suitable for you. Most tourists head to the Sam sand dunes, which are unappealingly commercial and crowded these days. The sand dunes near Khuri village in Desert National Park are more peaceful but have started to attract their share of tourists. If you book a camel safari package from Jaisalmer, it will most likely include a stop at abandoned Kuldhara village on the way to Khuri.

Bikaner, also in Rajasthan, is another popular option for camel safaris. However, the desert is nowhere near as impressive as Jaisalmer. You'll be disappointed if you go there expecting undulating sand dunes because they no longer exist. Instead, the safaris generally focus on visiting isolated desert villages.

Great camel safaris can be done at lesser-known Osian (about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur on the way to Bikaner. Stay at Reggie's Camel Camp or Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp . The interesting temples at Osian are an added attraction. Manvar Desert Camp and Resort is an exclusive option in the desert at Khiyansariya (between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner).

Many camel safari companies will allow you to choose your route, so you can decide if you want to take the road less traveled or the more touristy track. Be specific about it. Otherwise, you'll most likely end up in close proximity to lots of other tourists around Sam or Khuri in Jaisalmer.

If you do want to go on an offbeat sightseeing tour, Vedic Walks offers an overnight Desert Camel Safari and Camping Experience near Pushkar. It includes a safari through villages and a unique spiritual walking tour of the town. Dharma Camel Safari is another option in Puskhar that gets good feedback.

In addition, it's possible to go on a camel safari in the the alpine desert in Ladakh, mainly in the Nubra Valley from Hundar to Diskit . The camels on these trips are the double hump Bactrian variety.

Reputable Camel Safari Companies in Jaisalmer and Bikaner

Be sure to take care when booking your camel safari as the business is very competitive and it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Cheaper deals may seem appealing initially, but you'll find that the quality of food, bedding, and other necessities is lower. There will be more people in the group too. Make sure you find out exactly what the arrangements will be, such as whether dinner will be provided at a nearby village or a cook will make it for you over an open fire in the desert.

Most hotels and backpacker hostels in Jaisalmer sell camel safaris (for a commission). However, it's better to go with specialist operators, so you can be sure of what you're getting. Recommended ones include Sahara Travels (next to the Fort gate), Trotters Independent Travel , and Real Desert Man Camel Safaris. Their websites contain details of the various safari packages available. The safaris offered by Shahi Palace, Hotel Pleasant Haveli , Wanderlust Hostel , and Toffu Hotel and are also decent. Many offer non-touristy options away from the crowds.

If heading to Khuri, you can arrive by 4 p.m. and negotiate your camel safari directly with the camps there (they're all situated in a row). On a standard evening safari, you'll spend sunset in the sand dunes and return to the camp for dinner and a cultural program, before leaving for Jaisalmer at about 8.30 p.m.

If you really want to go off the beaten path and have a rustic experience, far from the tourist trail, try The Adventure Travel Agency in Jaisalmer. They'll take you a long camel safari out towards Barmer, sleeping under the stars on army bedding in the dunes.

There are fewer options for camel safaris in Bikaner. The oldest and most well-known operators are Vino Desert Safari, Rao Bikaji Camel Safari , and Camel Man.

Duration of Camel Safaris

It's possible to go on a quick camel safari and return the same day. However, most people prefer to go deeper into the desert for a few days. Many choose the overnight option, which is sensible as it can become monotonous otherwise (and you're likely to end up with a sore bum). This consists of riding the camel into the desert, watching the sunset, having dinner, star gazing, waking up for sunrise, and then riding back. Desert sunsets and sunrises are pretty darn spectacular!

Longer options, up to 30 days are available for hardcore enthusiasts! You can get an itinerary tailored to meet your needs.

How Much Will it Cost?

The price of camel safaris varies according to the route, standard of food and comfort provided. In Jaisalmer, rates start from around 1,000 rupees per person for a reputable sunset camel ride into the dunes and cultural program. Expect to pay 1,600 rupees upwards for a full-day (sunrise and sunset) camel safari package. Quality overnight camel safaris start from around 1,800 rupees per person. However, this can increase to 3,000 rupees for top-of-the-range camping (or glamping!) facilities.

Prices can be negotiated, so don't book anything in advance.

What to Expect

Riding a camel can become surprisingly uncomfortable after a while. Many people complain of having very sore legs and bums by the end of their journey.

On the most basic safaris, you'll be sleeping out under the stars either on a camp bed or on the ground. There are no toilets on these safaris. You'll have to go wild! The more luxurious safaris have established camps with Swiss tents and attached toilets.

The best time is during the cooler dry months, from September to March. After March, the desert becomes unbearably hot, and then the monsoon season starts. It doesn't rain much though, and temperatures remain high. Camel safaris usually depart early in the morning to allow some distance to be covered, and a suitable camping spot to be found and set up, before dusk.

What to Take with You

Bring something comfortable and padded to sit on to make the journey less painful if you're going on a longer safari.

Other useful items to bring include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, toilet paper, flashlight, insect repellent, water bottle, toothbrush and toothpaste, sleeping bag liner and plenty of warm clothing as it can get cold in the desert at night. Do be aware that you won't be able to bathe in the desert, so wet wipes will definitely come in handy as well.
