No. 1 Guided Tour of Český Krumlov Castle

The first sightseeing route is entered from the 3st castle courtyard. The route informs the visitors about the  standard of living and everyday life  in an aristocratic residence in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. 

The chapel is presented for the introduction of this route. Then follow 5 rooms that make up a dwelling unit of a representative character, the „Renaissance Rooms“ dating from the years when  Wilhelm and Peter Vok  of Rosenberg (second half of the 16th century) ruled in Český Krumlov. The second part of the sightseeing tour presents the  Eggenberg Hall , the Baroque Schwarzenberg suite (18th century), the castle picture gallery, and it ends in the  Masquerade Hall  with painted Rococo decoration from 1748.

Sightseeing route I - the Castle Chapel

The chapel was first mentioned in 1334 and its present-day appearance results from an adaptation from 1750 - 53. The stucco decoration was made by Matyáš André and the statue of St. George is by J.A. Zinner. The painting of the Virgin Mary on the high altar was painted by Ch.L. Philippot.

Český Krumlov State Castle and Château

Český Krumlov State Castle and Château, the second largest castle and château complex in the Czech Republic, is one of the most important monuments in Central Europe and forms one of the city's main landmarks.

In addition to the castle interiors, which are presented to the public by two sightseeing routes, the complex offers a wide range of other historical delicacies in the form of the castle tower, a symbol of the rich history and artistic beauty of Český Krumlov, the Baroque castle garden from the 17th century and the Baroque theatre.

Basic tour I.

Original historic castle interiors from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The tour route includes, among other things, the castle chapel of St. George, the Eggenberg Hall with its "golden" carriage and the famous rococo masquerade hall. Open from 1 April to 31 October

Basic tour II.

The second tour route introduces visitors to the history of the Schwarzenberg family. It begins with a visit to the Schwarzenberg portrait gallery with paintings of the most important members of the family from the 15th to the early 20th century, passes through the original historic interiors from the 1st and 2nd half of the 19th century and ends with a tour of the unique connecting corridors of the shell bridge. Open from 1 May to 30 September

Baroque Castle Theatre

The Baroque Theatre at Český Krumlov Castle represents the advanced Baroque scene. It is one of the most comprehensively preserved Baroque theatres in the world, with its original theatre building, orchestra pit, stage and machinery, hundreds of theatre costumes and costume accessories, sets and scenic accessories, lighting fixtures, librettos, etc. Thanks to sensitive restoration, the Baroque Theatre has become a unique monument of world importance. Castle Museum and Castle Tower

The Castle Museum will take you back to the times of the Lords of Krumlov, the Rožmberks and other important noblemen who lived in Český Krumlov and changed its face over the centuries. There are many valuable exhibits from the castle's depositories. A climb up 162 steps to the observation gallery of the castle tower rewards visitors with a view of the entire town and its surroundings. Open all year round

Stables and saddlery

The exhibition in the 5th courtyard includes carriages, preserved chaps, halters, smokers, baroque saddles and other parts of equestrian equipment. The most eye-catching artefact is the Schwarzenberg carriage for the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa in Prague, pulled by a ceremoniously dressed six-carriage team. The princely stables were built between 1750 and 1752 to house the half-breeds used by the nobility for rides around the area. Open in July and August

Baroque Castle Garden

The Baroque garden from the second half of the 17th century is situated on the hill and slope southwest of the castle. It consists of four parts: the terrace of the so-called "Steppe Garden", the terrace of the so-called "Summer Riding Hall" lined with a backdrop of mature lime trees, the Lower parterre with a hint of reconstructed rococo decoration and a cascading fountain, and the Upper Garden with its open garden, music pavilion, rococo Bellarie summerhouse and square castle pond. Study Centre

Part of the château complex is the reconstructed building of the Study Centre in the first château courtyard. It offers the possibility of long-term study stays, accommodation, but also facilities for workshops, concerts and other social gatherings.

Český Krumlov Castle - Residence of the South Bohemian aristocracy

Český Krumlov Castle is one of the most important monuments in Central Europe in terms of architectural level, cultural tradition and scale. Perhaps due to hidden position in a remote corner of South Bohemia. Its building development has been preserved with the original layout, material structure, interior installation and architectural details from the 14th to the 19th century. 

The monumental Český Krumlov Castle complex excels for its level of architecture, cultural tradition and area, and is rightly part of the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. The castle, bulit by the Vítkovec family and rebuilt in the Renaissance style under the Rožmberks extends along a rocky promontory above a meander of the Vltava river and consists of 41 separate palaces and outbuildings, and a 12-hectare ornamental castle garden.

Besides the Renaissance Rožmberk interiors and Baroque Schwarzenberg apartments of the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries, other interesting rooms are open to visitors. The true gem is the Baroque theatre with a full preserved set of scenery, costumes and props - unique in Europe. There is also a Castle Museum and the Stables with a Carriage and Sleigh collection have been recently opened. The extensive Gothic cellars house contemporary Czech and central European ceramic, glass and fine art galleries. Visitors can choose from nine tours and exhibitions, which include the Golden Eggenberg Carriage or the famed trompe d´oeil Masquerade Hall.  

A worthy assessment of the area by both domestic and foreign experts resulted in the acquisition of historic monument preservation status. In 1963, the town was declared a Municipal Preserve, in 1989 the castle became a National Monument, and in 1992 the entire complex was included onto the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Monuments.

The Administration of Český Krumlov Castle as a functionary of the Heritage Authority in České Budějovice attends to the operation of the structures, especially castle tours, maintenance, construction, and restoration work, and also participates in the arrangement of cultural and social activities at Český Krumlov Castle.

Castle No. 59 - Castle Tower

Location: The tower, surrounded by the residential palace of the Little Castle, is situated on a narrow rocky promontory towering above Latrán and the Vltava River between the Ist and IInd Courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle .

Technical parameters

Historical building development: The origins of this structure are partly Gothic and partly Renaissance, as is evident from the tower\'s external appearance. The tower as well as the Little Castle is a segment of a structure dating from the first half of the 13th century. The oldest part of it is the groundfloor and first floor. The origin of the second floor is around the 14th century, while the third floor is part of the Renaissance belfry. We can not eliminate the Gothic origin, however, due to the bell dated 1406. Under the architect Baldassare Maggi of Arogno , the castle was remodelled and converted from a plain Gothic palace into a Renaissance residence, and the tower was provided with an arcaded gallery at the top in 1581. In 1590 the tower was decorated with mural paintings and figural and architectural motifs by Bartoloměj Beránek - Jelínek . In 1947 an ambitious reconstruction of the tower was realized. The gallery is decorated with arcades on 19 columns .

There are four bells hung in the tower, the heaviest of which has an estimated weight of 1,800 kg and dates from 1406 . Other small bells, known as the clock bells, have been hanging in the lucerne atop the tower for 400 years.
