How To Skip To The Front Of The Airport Security Line…Every Time

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

As air travel approaches pre-pandemic levels and airports become more crowded, security lines are getting longer. But there is a guaranteed way to make sure you get to the front of the line…every time you fly. That means less stress figuring out how far in advance to get to the airport , and less time actually waiting in line.

In this article, I cover the benefits of CLEAR and explain how it is different from TSA PreCheck. I’ll also teach you how to get free or discounted CLEAR membership so you can save both time and money!

Note that this article is not sponsored by CLEAR. I’ve been using CLEAR for the past four years and just want to share how useful it can be to frequent travelers.

What’s the Difference Between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

Cellphone showing CLEAR app (left) and example of a CLEAR booth (right)

Both CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are expedited security programs that travelers can join for a fee. However, CLEAR will get you to the front of the line more quickly.

At most major U.S. airports, there are two main security lanes: one for TSA PreCheck (usually shorter) and one for regular processing (usually longer.) TSA PreCheck is a popular program that many travelers are already members of. It costs only $85 for five years, which is great value. After a background check and quick interview, most people get approval. However, so many travelers are now enrolled in the program that the TSA PreCheck line can often get long.

CLEAR goes a step further. It is a third lane—complete with dedicated customer service agents and actual red carpet—that allows you to skip ahead.

CLEAR uses biometrics, i.e. facial recognition and fingerprints, to identify you at a kiosk. Then you’ll scan your boarding pass and a CLEAR representative will escort you to the front of the line. From there, you’ll go one of two ways…

If you have TSA Pre-Check in addition to CLEAR, then you’ll go to the front of the Pre-Check line. However, if you do not have PreCheck, then you will go to the front of the regular lane instead and have to do the usual screening, including taking off your shoes and removing any devices from your bags.

10 Free Things You Can Get at Airports

Why Should I Get CLEAR?

Basically, you don’t have to worry about how long the security line is going to be. You can leave home (or your accommodation) knowing that you just need to allow enough time to check-in, drop bags (if needed), and go straight to the front of the security line.

Given CLEAR is significantly more expensive than TSA PreCheck, this program is best suited to frequent travelers.

Where Can I Find a CLEAR Airport?

There are 30+ CLEAR airports in the U.S., including 19 of the top 20 (Charlotte is the only one missing.) It covers most of the major airport hubs, as well as secondary airports like Baltimore, New Orleans and Sacramento.

It’s worth checking the CLEAR locations page to see if CLEAR operates at your home airport and/or destinations that you often fly to. You’ll also want to check the operating hours as well as in which terminal/s a CLEAR lane is available.

For example, at my home airport of Austin, the CLEAR lane closes at 6:30pm. That means if I were to fly out on a 9pm flight, I’d want to know that I would not be able to access CLEAR before my flight.

CLEAR has also expanded to operate at sporting and entertainment venues like New York’s Madison Square Garden and Dallas’ Globe Life Field. Finally, it is increasingly becoming common to find a CLEAR lane at one-off events and festivals like Chicago’s Pride In The Park.

How Much Does CLEAR Cost?

The base membership fee for CLEAR is $179/year. However, no one should pay full price (see next section.) If you compare the two expedited security programs, CLEAR will cost you a total of $895 over five years compared to TSA PreCheck’s $85 (less than 10% of the cost of CLEAR.)

Up to three family members can be added for $50/year each. However, children under 18 years old who are traveling with you do not need a membership.

Is There A CLEAR Promo Code?

Not right now, but if you search Google sometimes CLEAR partners with companies and runs special promo codes. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to snag a free or discounted CLEAR membership.

7 Things You Should Never Pack in a Carry-On Bag

How Can I Get a Free or Discounted CLEAR Membership?

Through a frequent flyer program.

The most common way to save money on a CLEAR membership is to apply using your Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus frequent flyer number. (Both of these programs are free to join if you’re not already a member.) Base members of these two programs get a discounted rate of $119, saving you $60.

If you have Silver, Gold or Platinum status with either program, the price drops to $109. Top-tier Delta Diamond Medallion and United Premier 1K members get a free CLEAR membership.

Through a Credit Card

Alternatively, you can get discounted membership rates if you hold a specific credit card . If you have a Delta- or United-branded credit card, you get a discounted $109 rate.

American Express Platinum and Business Platinum Card Members get a $179 statement credit each calendar year when using their card to pay for a CLEAR membership. American Express Green Card Members get a $100 statement credit.

Through a Student Discount

Students can get a four-year membership to CLEAR for only $50 per year.

Through a CLEAR Trial Membership

CLEAR offers a free two-month trial . If you do not want to continue to use the service, just make sure you cancel before the trial ends.

How Do I Apply For CLEAR?

  • Click through a cashback portal (up to $6 extra value)
  • Enroll for a free two-month trial ; or click through the Delta , United or student page for discounted membership
  • Take your ID to a CLEAR kiosk next time you fly (no appointment needed)
  • An agent will help you take your biometric information

Note that if your application is denied by CLEAR for any reason, you are entitled to a refund of your membership fee.

Bottom Line

If you are a frequent traveler and value your time, then CLEAR may be worth enrolling in. You can try out the service before you commit by signing up for a free two-month trial. You can also save money on the membership fee by either applying through Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus, or holding a specific credit card. Students get a hefty discount too.

On the other hand, if you are not a frequent traveler, getting TSA PreCheck may instead offer you better value. You’ll still save time compared to the regular line but do be aware that the PreCheck line can still be long, especially during peak travel periods.

Finally, CLEAR also offers expedited security screening at a growing number of sporting and entertainment venues and events, which will become more useful as the world opens back up.

How to Get a Clear Membership Discount Through Airline Loyalty

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. Members of certain airline loyalty programs can save at least $60 on Clear memberships, which allows travelers to speed through airport security. United MileagePlus and Delta SkyMiles both offer discounts on Clear membership to their members, and the savings increase for higher levels of elite status.

Since it’s free to join airline loyalty programs, there’s almost no reason to pay full price for Clear.

The Clear membership allows passengers to skip the ID check and use dedicated lanes to verify their identity at Clear kiosks with facial recognition technology and fingerprint scanning.

This is separate from Global Entry and TSA PreCheck . While Clear allows members to skip the identity verification in favor of biometric screening, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry expedite the physical screening process. Travelers with TSA PreCheck don’t have to take laptops or liquids out of their bags and can keep their belts and shoes on. The services are complementary; they don't overlap.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to get a discount on Clear membership with a frequent flyer membership, elite status or travel credit cards.

Typically, a Clear membership is $189 per year.

How to get the offer

Enroll in Clear before your trip using this link for United or this link for Delta .

Finish your enrollment by visiting a Clear location, where a representative will help capture your eyes and fingerprints. It should only take about five minutes, and you don’t need an appointment.

Start using the Clear dedicated lanes at the airport. Your biometric data (eyes and fingerprints) will confirm your identity. Then keep moving to the luggage screening and body scan.

Further maximize savings on trusted traveler programs

If you want to skip both the identity verification and the physical screening, you’ll need Clear and either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. While Delta and United have similar discounts for Clear, United has a slight advantage credit card-wise. The United℠ Explorer Card already comes with a $100 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee credit, so cardholders could get both Clear and TSA PreCheck and save a total of $180.

If you want to save even more on Clear, one option is through the American Express® Gold Card , which comes with a $100 Clear credit. Terms apply. If you utilize both the credit and the discounts from United or Delta, your Clear membership will effectively only cost $9 per year.

People who have The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express can enroll in Clear and get a statement credit towards the full cost of a membership. Terms apply.

This type of perk makes airport travel more convenient and faster, but it’s probably worth purchasing the Clear membership only if you’re a frequent traveler who consistently flies out of participating airports.

Even if you have TSA PreCheck® , now might be the time to add Clear® to your list of ways to get through airport security faster. A Clear® Plus memership works like this: After signing up online and completing a short in-person biometric scan to verify your identity, you’ll be able to walk up to a Clear® kiosk at any airport where there is one and scan your fingerprints or eyes (no need to scan your license or passport). Then a Clear® representative will escort you straight to the security checkpoint, bypassing the regular line where the TSA agents check your ID.

With airport security lines commanding extra-long waits nowadays and even TSA PreCheck lines getting longer, Clear® delivers a faster and more efficient airport experience. And with the right credit card or frequent flier affiliation, you can score a free or heavily discounted annual membership.

How much does Clear® Plus cost?

It typically costs $189 for an annual Clear® Plus membership , but there are several ways to lower this number through frequent flier memberships, promotional codes, or credit card statement credits. You can also add up to three family members and friends to your account for an extra $60 each per year. Those family members and friends don’t need to be traveling with you or together to use their memberships. Relatives under 18 years old can always join in the Clear® lane alongside a member at no cost.

Is Clear® Plus worth it?

Overall, a Clear® Plus membership is worth it if you regularly fly through any of the dozens of U.S. airports it currently serves, including JFK, LAX, and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. If you’re a sports fan, your Clear® membership also allows you to skip the line at many major sports stadiums throughout the country, including Oracle Park in San Francisco and Denver’s Coors Field.

Additionally, Clear® has some tools that may expedite your pandemic-era trip. You can store your digital vaccination card through Clear® as well as sometimes upload documents to create a Health Pass for air or cruise travel (when required).

How to get Clear® Plus for free

In addition to offering statement credits covering Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® fees , the Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ) also offers up to $189 in statement credits each year toward an annual Clear® Plus membership fee. Same goes for the Business Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ). While the American Express® Green Card provides a statement credit up to $189 annually, there is, interestingly, no Clear® benefit for Gold cardholders.

You first must enroll for this benefit online or by calling the number on the back of your card. After enrolling, simply charge your annual membership to your Platinum or Green card and days or weeks later a statement credit will appear for the amount paid, up to $189. It’s important to note that while Global Entry and TSA PreCheck credits extend to each additional Platinum card holder , the Clear® credit does not.

It’s also possible to get a free membership as a top frequent flier. If you hold Delta’s coveted Diamond Medallion status, you can get a Clear® membership for free. Likewise, those with United Premier 1K status also receive complimentary membership.

Clear® discounts for Delta SkyMiles members

Anyone with a SkyMiles account (which is free to sign up for) can pay $179 for an annual Clear® membership—a savings of $10 off the full price. If you’re a Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion member on Delta, or have a Delta SkyMiles credit card, you’ll only pay $149. To enroll, simply sign up at clearme.com/partner/delta using your SkyMiles account number.

Clear® discounts for United MileagePlus members

Anyone with a Mileage Plus account (which is also free to sign up for) qualifies for a discounted $179 annual Clear® membership. Those with United Premier Platinum, Gold, or Silver status and United U.S. credit card members can obtain membership for $149 annually. To link your frequent flier account with a membership, add your MileagePlus number when signing up at clearme.com/partner/united .

Combining Amex and airline benefits

It’s possible to combine airline discounts with Amex statement credits to maximize a Clear® membership for yourself, family, and friends. Here’s how. First, enroll for your Clear® credit as a Platinum or Green card holder. Then, sign up for a membership through either Delta’s or United’s partner links for discounted pricing. This way, your membership costs $179 at most. Platinum and Green cardholders will get the full $179 credit.

Is Clear® better than TSA PreCheck?

Although people see Clear® and TSA PreCheck as competitors, they are meant to complement one another. TSA PreCheck is free with over a dozen credit cards and is an essential for travel through U.S. airports. Clear® is an added time-saving service on top of TSA PreCheck at select airports.

If you still feel the need to choose one, TSA PreCheck always wins. PreCheck lines are far shorter and faster than regular airport security lines. The annual fee is $85 for five years (and reimbursed by many credit cards ). Not having to remove shoes, electronics, or 3-1-1 liquids makes airport security a breeze.

We don’t recommend getting a Clear® membership without a TSA PreCheck membership. You’ll still fast track to the front of the regular airport security line but will need to take off your shoes and remove your electronics from your bag while going through the checkpoint. This means your time savings are kind of out the window.

In total, the optimal situation is to have both TSA PreCheck and Clear®. It’s the most you can do to make today’s airport experience as fast and efficient as possible. Those who carry the Platinum Card® from American Express can score both for free, while frequent flier members of both Delta and United can land deep discounts on a Clear® membership.

While the offers mentioned above are accurate at the time of publication, they are subject to change at any time, and may have changed or may no longer be available. All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by AFAR.

How to Get a Discount on Clear Membership

By Louis Cheslaw

Clear ClearMe

Clear, the expedited security program , is a big time saver. After a rebranding in 2010, the program has helped countless American fliers speed through the security line at more than 60 U.S. airports, helping to cut down wait time at the airport. While TSA PreCheck allows pre-screened travelers to join a separate, shorter security line, Clear lets members bypass the line altogether. Just find one of their kiosks after you enter your terminal, tap their biometric security screen, scan your eye or finger, and a Clear member will escort you to the front of security (along with your children, provided they're under 18.)

If you're ready to sign up, there are a few options for a free or discounted membership. Currently, Clear has partnerships with two airlines (Delta and United) that grant frequent fliers discounts from their standard price of $179 per year. Even new members can get a discount, so simply creating an account with one of these programs is an easy way to save money on Clear. If you don't wish to sign up with an airline, Clear also offers a free trial to anyone wishing to test out the service and a hefty student discount. Read on for a description of each option, and how to take advantage of them.

Getting Clear with Delta Airlines

Members of Delta's Skymiles program can get Clear for $119. That number goes down to $109 for Delta credit card holders, or fliers with Delta's Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion status. Members of Delta's top-tier Diamond Medallion status get a Clear membership free of charge.

Sign up for Delta Skymiles here. Once you're a member, it's easy to link your membership to a new Clear account.

Getting Clear with United Airlines

As of this week, members of United's MileagePlus program can also get Clear for $119. Similar to Delta, the fee drops to $109 for members of United's Premier Platinum, Gold, and Silver status holders, and anyone with a United credit card . Clear is free for members of United's top-tier Global Services and Premier 1K program. As an additional bonus, Clear's partnership with United means the service is coming to a few new airports, including Newark Liberty International and Houston George Bush Intercontinental, by the end of the summer.

Trying Clear with a free trial

Clear currently offers a two-month free trial, including for families. This is great for those who are doing a lot of summer travel, or simply want to try out the service for a limited amount of time without paying the annual membership fee.

How to get a student discount

Clear currently offers students a discount of $50 per year for four years from the time of enrollment. Anyone studying at a four-year or two-year college or graduate school is eligible for the four-year student discount , no matter if they're in their first year of college or on their last semester.

What is Clear airport security — and is it worth it?

Caroline Tanner

Editor's Note

Clear Plus is an expedited security program currently available at 56 U.S. airports, as well as stadiums and other large venues, with more than 17 million members nationwide .

As a secure identity platform, Clear uses member data, including fingerprint and iris scans, to automate most users' identity verification step in the U.S. Transportation Security Administration screening process. Clear members go through a separate security lane with dedicated kiosks rather than waiting in line for a TSA agent to review their license or passport.

Clear costs $189 annually , but some credit cards cover the cost entirely or at a discounted rate.

To help you decide whether Clear is worth it, here's what you need to know about the expedited airport security program, including its benefits, potential drawbacks and ways to get a discounted (or free) membership.

How Clear works

Clear requires passengers to first complete identity verification in a separate Clear lane by submitting to biometric authentication (a fingerprint or iris scan) at a kiosk; this replaces the step of using a TSA agent to inspect government IDs and check boarding passes. Note that TSA may randomly select Clear users , like all other registered travelers, to verify their identity by showing an ID at any time.

After verifying a passenger's identity, a Clear representative will escort Clear users to the actual security screening area, bypassing everyone waiting in the first line.

If you're also enrolled in TSA PreCheck , you'll go directly to the TSA PreCheck line.

Additionally, Reserve powered by Clear — which allows travelers to book timed entry through TSA security based on flight departure — is currently available at 20 airports across the U.S., Canada and Europe.

How does Clear compare to TSA PreCheck?

Clear further reduces airport security wait time by automating the identity verification process and whisking users to the front of the TSA line. However, having Clear does not automatically confer TSA PreCheck status, and it's also currently available at fewer airports than TSA PreCheck .

TSA PreCheck members are not guaranteed TSA PreCheck access every time they fly since they can be randomly excluded and sent to the standard line. On the contrary, Clear has no randomized exclusion of passengers. Also, everyone who enters the Clear line is a member of Clear and probably knows how to operate the system.

On the other hand, TSA sometimes adds nonmember travelers who have no idea how it works to the TSA PreCheck line. This can hold up the line. Additionally, TSA PreCheck only works when traveling with a participating airline. In contrast, Clear works when traveling with any carrier.

Clear and TSA PreCheck are restricted to certain hours and may not be available during your flight time.

What's the difference between Clear and Clear Sports?

You can also use Clear at select stadiums via Clear's Sports & Events access, which is free and available to all Clear members for expedited entry to games at participating stadiums. However, this membership doesn't provide access to non-stadium Clear locations like airports.

Once you are a Clear member, you can add up to three family members for $99 each per year. Children under 18 can use the lane for free when accompanied by a Clear member.

Bottom line

If Clear is available at your home airport or one you visit frequently, the program could be a big timesaver for your future travels, regardless of whether you also have TSA PreCheck. There's often just a single TSA staffer checking documents for both the TSA PreCheck line and the regular security line, so enrolling in Clear can save you valuable time.

Additionally, you can stack those expedited line benefits and enjoy more predictable access to security. This means those who check in online without checked bags can arrive at the airport closer to their flight departure time than they normally would — and sometimes avoid long security lines .

Clear membership: the pros and cons.

CLEAR membership offers plenty of benefits, but comes with a hefty price tag.

After a few quiet years during the pandemic, air travel is well and truly back, and airports are busier than ever. Passenger numbers will likely increase considerably over the coming weeks and months as we approach the start of the peak northern summer travel season.

With that in mind, one of the best ways for passengers to make their journey through the airport more seamless is by investing in a program that grants them priority access to various elements of the airport security experience. There are numerous choices available on the market, with the Government-run TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs being among the most common. CLEAR is another alternative, set up by a private company. What are the pros and cons of CLEAR membership?

What is CLEAR?

CLEAR membership utilizes a passenger's boarding pass and biometric details to allow them to skip the identification check element of airport security. The program is available only to US citizens and permanent legal residents aged 18 and older with valid government ID.

At the beginning of 2023, CLEAR celebrated the launch of its 50th airport kiosk, opening up Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) to its members, followed closely by Kansas City International Airport (MCI). Today, CLEAR is available at 55 airports across the US. While this excludes many of the country's smaller regional airports, the majority of major airline hubs have a CLEAR kiosk, including:

  • Hartsfield Jackson-Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Detroit Metropolitan International Airport (DTW)
  • New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

CLEAR membership - the pros

Firstly, the major appeal of CLEAR membership is that it facilitates the airport security experience, with members able to skip the often lengthy identification check line. On busy travel days, this alone can shave valuable minutes, sometimes longer, off the overall airport journey, as well as make the experience significantly less stressful.

CLEAR is available at airports across the country, from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Miami International Airport (MIA), and unlike its competitors, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, it can also be used at selected sporting and music venues.

When it comes to signing up, it is quicker and easier to register for CLEAR than it is for the likes of TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. An appointment is not needed to register - applicants simply complete the online application form and then go to any CLEAR kiosk to finalize their enrolment. This is significantly easier than applying for Government-run schemes such as TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, which often require applicants to go through an arduous screening and interview process.

What To Expect At A Global Entry Interview

In addition to the perk of being able to skip the identification line at airport security, CLEAR members also get complimentary AVIS Preferred Plus membership, which is the middle tier of the car rental company's loyalty program. This gives them a car upgrade subject to availability, as well as access to exclusive offers and promotions.

CLEAR membership - the cons

The major drawback to CLEAR membership is its price. Coming in at $189 per year, CLEAR is significantly more expensive than the Government-run TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs, making it more ideal for those who travel very regularly rather than the occasional traveler. For comparison, TSA PreCheck costs $78 for five years, and Global Entry is currently $100 for five years, although this is set to increase to $120 in October 2024.

However, CLEAR has teamed up with both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, and membership discounts are available for eligible SkyMiles and MileagePlus members. Each of these popular airline loyalty programs offers a $10 discount, bringing the price down to $179 per year. For those with a higher tier status, the discount rises to as much as $40, and for Delta Diamond Elite and United Premier 1K members, CLEAR membership is free of charge. Active military personnel and veterans can also benefit from a special price of $99 per year. Meanwhile, American Express Platinum credit card holders can also obtain CLEAR membership for free.

It is worth remembering that the benefits of CLEAR membership only apply to one element of the airport security experience - the identification check. Passengers still need to be screened in the regular screening line, and will need to remove liquids and electronic items from their bags, as well as remove certain items of clothing, such as shoes and belts, as normal. However, it is possible to combine CLEAR membership with TSA PreCheck membership in order to beat the lines at both stages of the security process.

A Brief Guide To TSA PreCheck

The availability of CLEAR kiosks is not as widespread as TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, and not all airports across the US facilitate CLEAR membership (although most major airline hubs do). CLEAR has 67 locations throughout the country, including 55 airports, while TSA PreCheck privileges are available at more than 290 airports.

FlyClear.com is now ClearMe.com

FlyClear was the first version of the Registered Traveler Program that is now operating as CLEAR on ClearMe.com.

The program was operated by Verified Identity Pass and reached over 200,000 members before it ceased operations on June 22, 2009.

In 2008 a security breach of member private data occurred and subsequently created several issues for the program such as bad PR, legal expenses, and some loss of confidence from its members.

After the program shut down in 2009, Alclear LLC later purchased the company and restored operations with past membership agreements intact .

The benefits originally listed on FlyClear.com were as follows:

Clear members do not waste time in airport security lines. They are in control of their time and their schedule. Get through security faster, in under four minutes. Don’t worry about unpredictably long lines. Access a designated security lane with special benefits. Allow our attendants and concierges to help you as you go through the Clear lane. Use your Clear card at airports nationwide.

Proposed bill would ban Clear users from skipping security lines at California airports

C alifornia lawmakers are looking to crack down on airport line-jumpers with a proposed bill that would ban security screening company Clear from general security lines across the state.

The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Josh Newman, a Democrat who represents the 29th Senate District.

Newman told CBS MoneyWatch the bill, which is set to come before the California State Senate's transportation committee on Tuesday, lets wealthier people skip in front of passengers who have been waiting to be screened by Transportation Security Administration agents, and that the bill aims to resolve a "basic equity issue."

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Republican state Sen. Janet Nguyen told Politico she understands the frustration stated in Newman's bill and that "it becomes a haves vs. have nots" where people who can afford Clear jump in front of everyone else. However, a spokesperson for Nguyen sought to clarify to USA TODAY on Tuesday that Nguyen had not reviewed the bill in its entirety when she spoke to Politico last week.

"When it comes to making one’s way through airport security, the quality of that experience shouldn’t be contingent on a traveler’s income or willingness to pay," Sen. Newman said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. "And yet, in many of California's airports, travelers who choose not to participate in the Clear concierge screening service are subject to the indignity of being shunted aside to make way for those who do," the statement continues.

"This is inequitable, especially in light of the fact that it's their tax dollars which fund airport security services in the first place," Newman's statement reads.

What is Clear?

According to its website, Clear charges members $189 a year and allows customers to verify their identities at kiosks upon arriving at airports, where customers can their boarding pass and eyes or fingerprints. After identity verification, a Clear ambassador will then escort customers to the front of the security line.

The service is currently being used in dozens of airports across the country and in major California airports in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, as well as in many sports stadiums and other venues.

"We are proud to partner with nine airports across California − creating hundreds of jobs, sharing more than $13 million in annual revenue with our California airport partners, and serving nearly 1 million Californians," a Clear spokesperson said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY.

"We are always working with our airline and airport partners as well as local, state, and federal governments to ensure all travelers have a safer, easier checkpoint experience,” the statement reads.

What does SB-1372 propose?

Newman's bill, SB-1372, would require third-party vendors like Clear to get their own dedicated security lane, separate from the one used by general travelers. The bill would apply to new agreements between public airports and third-party security services after Jan. 1, 2025.

He told Politico he is not trying to ban Clear but believes its system is neither efficient nor secure.

"SB-1372 doesn't seem to terminate the Clear concierge service at airports; instead, it seeks to have Clear and other third-party screening services operate separate lines for subscribers, thereby eliminating the friction and frustration caused by the current system," Newman said in a statement.

While the bill faces support from union groups representing flight attendants and TSA employees, it faces strong pushback from six major airline companies: Delta, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Southwest and United.

The airlines, in a letter to Senate Transportation Committee chair Dave Cortese and published by Politico, said the bill "not only threatens to increase fees on air carriers but also severely restricts airports' ability to manage lines at the security checkpoint, resulting in a negative travel experience for our California customers."

The airlines argue that SB-1372 could eliminate millions in revenue dollars currently paid by Clear, which could further increase air carrier operating costs in the state and leading to increased fares.

The Northern California branch of the American Federation of Government Employees, a federal employee union group, argued in a letter to Cortese that "expedited screening service providers no longer make meaningful contributions to aviation security, and their continued presence at California's airports instead degrade the public's traveling experience."

Sarah Nelson of the Association of Flight Attendants, a union group representing flight attendants in the U.S., said it is concerned by "continuing reports about irregularities in Clear's verification of passenger identification," raising concerns about the integrity of aviation security, according to a letter to Cortese also published by Politico.

Lawmakers consider bill that would ban CLEAR program at California airports

By emma goss • published april 23, 2024 • updated on april 23, 2024 at 7:40 pm.

A bill making its way through the California legislature takes aim at third-party vendors like CLEAR Plus which, for $189 a year, allows travelers to move to the head of the security screening line.

“Travel is hard enough, and so having this ability to skip a line is helpful,” said Charity Wallace, who was traveling through SJC with CLEAR.

The bill, introduced by Southern California State Senator Josh Newman, wants the general public to avoid ending up in line behind those willing to pay more.

That bill would require third party vendors like CLEAR to get their own TSA screeners through the federal government and create a whole different line.

Get a weekly recap of the latest San Francisco Bay Area housing news. Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.

AT SJC, airport management worries that that requirement would mean CLEAR would vanish from California airports.

Six major airlines also came out against the bill, noting that if CLEAR is cut from airports, airfare may go up.
