Sizing vintage and secondhand items can be challenging. Size expectations can shift over the years and pre-loved garments may not match their original size label.
Instead of relying on a garment's size label we measure each piece to determine a consistent, modern size. So if you usually wear a Medium in your favorite brands, you will probably be a Medium at Thrilling.
Bring the party with you wherever you go (retro style) with this ultra mid-century, Executair 101 traveling bar set. This MCM vintage set comes in a great lockable navy blue case with a handle and metal hardware around the edges, on the latch, and on the four legs under. The inside has black lining and black leather straps. The kit includes the following: 4 tall glasses, 2 shot glasses, 1 plate, 1 cork screw, and 2 bottle openers. The inner right side of the kit has three spaces for bottles or shakers. The original key is inside of an original tag / key holding pouch inside. This pouch reads "The Original Trav-L-Bar by ever-wear has all genuine top grain cowhide strapping, your key to traveling pleasure". Perfect for your home bar, traveling, or picnics. Cases Loaded: A Boozy History of ‘Trav-L-Bars’ and On-the-Go Cocktail Culture
words: Kelsey Atherton
illustration: Danielle Grinberg
Inside the clipped-shut hard case exterior of my first Executair was a faux-velvet lining, four small metal cups, two metal shot glasses, bar tools, and storage capacity for three bottles. The kit was a package deal: Whenever I arrived at a party, I had my role and conversation starter ready-made. When I called it a night, I was bound for a hangover, as was anyone else who had one too many of my simple-syrup-rich concoctions.
According to a long-saved eBay receipt, a “Vintage Ever-Wear Executair 707 Trav-L-Bar Travel Bar Set with Key Bottles and Accessories” arrived in my life in July 2012. It set me back $50 for the set, $13.17 for shipping. For the next few years, together with my trusty flask , the mobile bar would be a defining feature of my nights out, a growing collection of alcohol-laden suitcases turning every party into an afterparty.
Today, we are living in a golden age of pre-mixed canned cocktails , of portable liquor in discreetly chic packaging. Consider it a side effect of the to-go cocktails of the early pandemic, or the natural outgrowth of hard seltzer brands into more durable, and arguably flavorsome, products. Whatever the cause, for people drinking liquor on the go in a more palatable form than drugstore nips, premixed drinks are to the present what canned craft beer was to drinkers a decade ago.
Before this, underneath the cultural shadow of “Mad Men’s” mid-century stylings, I stumbled into possession of one, then two, then several mobile bars. The Executair offered an alternative to brown paper bags or tailgate coolers. It also represents cocktail culture as affectation and aesthetic, despite the impracticality of mixing drinks on the go.
Mid-Century Marketing
“Trav-L-Bar” first shows up as a coherent phrase in 1956, in the digitized catalogs of both Google Books and the Internet Archive. Fall and winter of that year, especially, saw a flurry of ads for this new mobile bar. The first mention, fittingly, was in the September 1956 issue of Advertising Requirements, a professional magazine of the ad industry.
In a section of “Business Gifts With A ‘Personal’ Touch,” selected by the magazine, the bar is nestled between a skillet with bacon and a French doll. Advertising Requirements described the Deluxe Trav-L-Bar as “a gift for the whole year” that “will be appreciated on trips, picnics, trains, etc.” The case is described as made “of leather-like Surtex,” and is advertised as containing four 8-ounce aluminum glasses, a mixing spoon, a bottle and can opener, and a “bone handled corkscrew.” Not included, but integral to the design, the case has room for, as the ad describes, “two bottles of his favorite brand and a bottle of mix or a cocktail shaker.”
The full size was priced at $16.75, with a smaller case available at $12.75. Adjusted for inflation , that’s $183.52 and $139.69, respectively.
In October 1956, the Trav-L-Bar would get a mention in Financial World as an “Eye-opening gift for the man who has everything,” with the contents listed as “a trim piece of luggage with room for two fifth-bottles of liquor — the product of Ever-Wear Trunk Works, Inc., the unit is fitted with four two-ounce shot glasses, a mixing spoon, combination opener, and cork-screw.”
Road & Track’s December 1956 issue would feature the two-bottle version as “just the thing for travel or outdoor entertaining after the races and such.” Yachting magazine said “the handy two-bottle bar unit will suit the skipper who has broken a few bottles handling them the hard way,” noting the bar “contains compactly the wherewithal for a little pre-dinner relaxation after the hook goes down.”
Perhaps the publication most indicative of the Trav-L-Bar’s desired buyer, the December 1956 Playboy included an ad for the two-bottle unit, saying it “saves time, temper, and tips in hotels and trains — helps prevent frostbite at outdoor sports events — just the thing for patio, game room, office, den, or boat.” The copy stressed that the kit’s four 2-ounce shot glasses were made of “unbreakable polyethylene.”
As pitched, at advertisers and the magazine-reading public, the Trav-L-Bar was an invitation to turn any event into a modest cocktail party. It was a tool of leisure, touted to the business class to enhance those already eager to indulge at sea, on long drives, or even while traveling by train. It fit, broadly, into the post-war revival of cocktail parties, of drinking in community as a kind of social game .
The materials of the Trav-L-Bar also speak to the era, and the availability of consumer goods built around technologies refined for war. Plastic shot glasses were light and novel, far better to take on the road than glass. The synthetic Surtex would in 1961 get dinged by the Federal Trade Commission for not actually possessing enough qualities of leather to be “leather-like,” but by then its form and texture were already iconic with the mobile bars.
Case Loaded
My Trav-L-Bar either came or quickly became stained, with the messiness of drink spilling onto the lined interior. The bar came with a trio of labeled vintage bottles, each designed to hold a pint of Scotch, bourbon, and gin. The gin bottle broke quickly, the bourbon one later, and the Scotch bottle still endures. I found, through experimentation, that reused bottles of Pimms or crème de violette liqueur filled the available space nicely.
With crème de violette on hand, Aviations were an easy go-to, though I’d leave the cherries at home. Black Russians, similarly, traveled well, with vodka and Kahlúa holding up to Uber rides better than the mixture would have lasted with milk mixed in. I also, apparently, made a lot of “ Autumn Manhattans ,” a stirred blend of bourbon, sweet vermouth, applejack, and bitters that I had completely forgotten about before writing this piece.
While much of the joy of the mobile bar was finding a table and claiming a corner of a party, the ability to recall what was in a given drink diminished as the night wore on. I took to writing out the mixes, proportioned at a single drink, onto name tags slapped onto the bottles. One night my bar contained a pint of Fireball Manhattan, 1.5 pints of Boston Sidecar, and a pint of Arsenic and Old Lace, a Martini-like cocktail that offers another home for the polarizing profile of crème de violette.
In the summer months, I moved on to Pimm’s Cups, with a second bar to hold premixed Arnold Palmers to which Pimm’s and garnish could be added as the drinks were served. Two suitcases full of pre-mixed drinks became a project in and of itself, especially when I’d bring them to a bar before the house party.
One night out, my bar kit included an unmarked bag of powdered sugar, which I envisioned setting on the bar’s silver tray so I could put a sugar rim on glasses before serving a rum-based drink. It took maybe the second incredulous gasp for me to realize that the whole spectacle of the presentation suggested I was about to invite a room full of strangers to watch me snort a line of cocaine before making them drinks.
The thrill of a mobile bar was in its presence and presentation, the idea that drinks could be mixed from a kit on hand. That promise was in tension with the maximum efficiency of pre-mixed cocktails, bottled the morning before and trotted out after work. Bringing enough separated ingredients to mix meant forgoing precious ounces of hard liquor, and in the end, maximum alcohol won out most nights over an appreciation for the craft.
Perpetual Retro
Ads for the Trav-L-Bar recur throughout the late 1950s up through the 1980s. Trav-L-Bars were promoted in newspapers like the San Rafael Daily Independent , as well as magazines like Newsweek that had a broader appeal than the initial trade and men’s magazines it was aimed at. House and Garden in 1960 described the two-bottle kit as “a convenient bar for the busy man on your list. Ideal for business or vacation trips; for home or office.”
The Trav-L-Bar also repeatedly showed up in advertising trade publications. The September-October 1961 issue of Packaging Design wrote, under the header “Hic Transit,” that “masculine fellowship as found in old-time barbershops and ‘men only’ taverns is the theme of this shipping container for the Royalshire Trav-L-Bar.” Fitting for the publication, it emphasized the “Dark brown inks on the kraft container, which was printed by Stone Container Corporation, give the graphics the appearance of a wood-cut.” The special packaging, featuring several bowlered and mustachioed men in an old-timey bar, could blend in seamlessly with the “ Cheers ” intro.
Ads for the Trav-L-Bar appeared in Sports Illustrated , and began to find a natural home in college newspapers. In 1969, Florida State University’s Florida Flambeau ran an ad featuring two Trav-L-Bars alongside a miniature cooler for a 6-pack of beer, suggesting the direction of the future of portable drinking. The December 1966 issue of Esquire advertised a full spread of Trav-L-Bars , including one that could accommodate five full bottles.
A 1975 spread in Holiday magazine showcased the Trav-L-Bar as an ideal carryon for balloonists. “Our little refreshment stand carries your favorite brand and is ready whenever,” the copy read, echoing earlier pitches, before pivoting right into fiscal responsibility. “And your cost is only 25¢ per cocktail.” Apartment Life magazine included a Trav-L-Bar as part of its 1980 feature on “Aptwares On The Road,” essentials for making a hotel feel like home.
By the last decade of the 20th century, Trav-L-Bar had moved from premium business gift to college kid companion to frugal fancy. In 1997’s “ The New York Times Weekends ,” an excursion to Labervill in Hunterdon County is recommended for antiquing. One store is worth the trip because it “sells ‘20th-century antiques,’ like campy bar ware from the 1950s, including a “Trav-L-Bar” briefcase complete with tumblers for $65.”
Completing the conversion from retro kitsch to retro chic, 2001’s “ Things You Need To Be Told ,” a cheeky faux-’50s style guide by “the Etiquette grrls,” includes a special mention for the Trav-L-Bar. It is “the Brand Name of the Etiquette Grrls Trusty Travel Bar, which is how the Etiquette Grrls Carry Their Gin Around.”
Drinksgiving
My original mobile bars were lost to dumpsters and time, part of an apartment move-out defined by shedding possessions through necessity more than intent. I’ve since received another, as a lovely gift from my spouse who could tell I missed the absurdity of the kit.
Today, Trav-L-Bars can be found for sale across the internet, often under the Executair or Trav-L-Bar name. Modern incarnations exist, from REI padded coolers to Tacticool kits set inside gas-can casings. As some places within the United State loosened, at least temporarily , the rules on open containers and outdoor drinking, the utility of a portable cocktail kit has only increased. Though, admittedly, part of the promise and the thrill with a Trav-L-Bar was the promise of a good night to come, libations ported through the routine of the day waiting for the moment of release.
This year, I dusted off the old Executair, and loaded it up to bring to Thanksgiving. The cocktails planned were the Kir Royale and Sex on the Beach, complete with ingredients to make a mocktail version of each. That meant bringing a reusable grocery bag of mixers and add-ons, undercutting the self-contained joy of the bar, but it meant I got to mix drinks as my family asked for them, and to their specifications.
Ultimately, what makes the bar work, and what I suspect has sustained decades of a second-hand market for the kits, is that it’s about the experience shared together, in an unusual setting . Canned booze is — in form, if not content — identical to soda or seltzer. A mobile bar, even one making mocktails, is crafted on the spot.

When pups fly: BARK Air, the world's first airline for dogs, take first flight
Bark air says that it has taken the 'white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.' that experience comes at a cost..
The first jet charter company in the world in which every passenger is a VIP (very important pup) is now off the ground.
BARK Air , launched by dog toy company BARK in partnership with a jet charter service, is a luxury airline for man's best friend that transports dogs of all sizes along with their owners “in comfort and in style,” CEO Matt Meeker said in a video provided by Reuters that takes the public behind the scenes of the new airline.
"We’re here to revolutionize flying for dogs," says BARK Air's website.
Tickets sold out for BARK Air's first flight , which took off at 4 p.m. ET from New York, headed to Los Angeles. And flights are filling fast for the month of June.
Here's what you need to know about the new airline, including how much flights cost.

Dogs take first Bark Air flight
BARK Air shared details of the company's first flight on Thursday in an Instagram post.
"Right now, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, there is a flight filled with dogs. Unlike any flight before it, these dogs are not merely an afterthought, nor are they treated as cargo or a burden to the crew and fellow travelers. Here, dogs are the foremost priority," the company posted.
BARK Air continued to say that the effort took 10 years, "but we are finally confident that we can provide all dogs with the air travel experience they deserve: one that puts them first."
One user commented that "this really is the pawfect flight!" Another said: "We woof to see this."
BARK Air's prices aren't cheap
Pet owners can expect to pay $8,000 for a one-way international flight and $6,000 one way for a domestic flight that covers both them and their dog.
For now, routes will serve the New York City metro area via Westchester County Airport (HPN), with flights to the Los Angeles area via Van Nuys (VNY) and London, England via Biggin Hill (BQH), according to BARK Air's website.
What to expect flying BARK Air
The company says that it has taken the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”
Meeker said that the airlines caters everything to the dog, "trying to lower their anxiety and their stress, so they have the most comfortable, fear-free experience on an airplane."
Food and water are provided for the pooches, and there's "even a spa treatment that happens in air," Meeker said.
BARK Air says that a concierge will learn a dog's temperament and sensitivities before the flight for the best placement on the plane. Dogs will not be caged or on leashes but will be free to sit on the seat, their human, a bed or wherever comfortable, the company says.
There are designated areas before flights for dogs to go potty and emergency pads will be available during flights.
How many dogs can fit on a flight?
Each flight fits 15 dogs and their humans, according to BARK AIR's website, but it never sells more than 10 tickets per flight. Space while flying is important to how animals roam, the company says.
Though there are additional tickets available if more than one human needs to accompany a dog, kids are not allowed to fly BARK Air. Each passenger must be at least 18 years old.

This Providence, R.I. bar is doubling down on its whiskey
T he East End in Providence has a lot of the elements you’d expect to find in a whiskey bar: moody lighting, leather chairs, dark wood, and sets of deep blue velvet curtains tied off by golden ropes. The bar has lots of little cubbies, and every inch of the shelves is full of bottles of dark-hued liquor.
The bartenders need to climb onto a ladder or onto the bar itself to reach parts of the restaurant’s collection of more than 400 types of whiskey. The East End was opened seven years ago by Gil MacLean (who also owns Bottles , the popular East Side liquor store), and is getting another wave of investment, including doubling down on their late-night and spirit programs, which boasts far more whiskey varieties than many other watering holes around the city. They underwent a three-week renovation in late 2023, and hired Josh Davis as the tavern’s new executive chef. Davis, who previously worked in kitchens in Boston and Portland, Maine, and most notably served as the chef de cuisine for Portland’s Duckfat, is focused on keeping the bar’s approachable menu in tune with customer demands.
The East End will soon be launching a newsletter for new whiskey drops, and will restart product launch events and whiskey tastings that were more prevalent prior to the pandemic, said Hannah Weaver, a long-time bartender who was promoted to East End’s general manager.
“We’ll hold onto some limited editions for a while, and then release them at the restaurant. It’ll feel like you’re getting a final taste,” said Weaver, who said they have a collection of bottles from the early 2010s that haven’t yet been touched.
As old-as-time cocktails — like the Sazerac, Highball, Manhattan, and Whiskey Sour — surged in popularity in the late 2000s and early 2010s, whiskey bars also made a resurgence.
For a time, it felt like nearly every other bar was part of the craft cocktail renaissance, and “mixologists” were attempting to create their own versions of Prohibition Era offerings. Owners advertised their establishments as “speakeasies,” handlebar mustaches became “in” again, and suspenders became a standard part of the uniform. But many of these places had one thing in common: Much of their identity was built on the 21st century whiskey wave. Those on the outskirts of the mainstream who were working with mezcal or rum were still trying to recreate that whiskey taste — smoky and defined.
Changing tastes, market pressures, and the COVID-19 pandemic pushed whiskey into a downward spiral by 2020, but the decline in sales did not last long. Sales for bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, and rye whiskey rose by nearly 7 percent in 2021 to $4.6 billion that year, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.
“Whiskey never goes out of style,” said Weaver.
Weaver — who previously worked in bars and restaurants in Seattle, New York, and Detroit — thinks of The East End’s massive whiskey collection the same way the kitchen thinks about its food. “We want everything to be approachable,” said Weaver. “But with our whiskey, we want it to be educational for the pros, and for those who have never really tasted whiskey before.”
Collectors’ editions of whiskey can run into the thousands of dollars. But Weaver said the bar will build a whiskey tasting flight for any budget — starting at $20. “Understanding and appreciating whiskey doesn’t have to be unaffordable,” she told me.
“At the end of the day, we’re a neighborhood bar,” Weaver added.

Summer is approaching and as the temperatures are heating up, restaurants and bars across the city are tearing down their winterized patio structures and letting the cool breeze blow through.
Chicagoans know to savor any and all bouts of warm, sunny weather. Parks and beaches are a natural draw, but so are restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, where we can laugh with a drink in one hand and a fork in the other amid peaceful vistas or vibrant cityscapes.
But where to snag a coveted chair? To help you out, the Tribune food team’s guide for outdoor patios contains spots where you can read or work for a spell, places with after-work happy hours to treat your team, plus patios fit for date night.
Alfresco your future afternoons away with our list below:

A rooftop patio: Raised in the Loop
Take in skyscrapers and Chicago River vistas at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel’s Raised, where a patio three stories above street level makes fending off the corporate crowd and tourists worth the toil. While sometimes downtown bars skimp on flavor and service for million-dollar views, neither was sacrificed on my recent weeknight visit. Choose from cushioned couches or high-top tables to dine on shared snacks from the new California-inspired summer menu from chef Oliver Melgar, like crunchy-savory ahi tuna tacos with wonton taco shells and avocado mousse, or crispy Taiwanese popcorn chicken with sweet chili sauce. Drinks like a jammy bourbon and red wine concoction or a creamsicle-like mocktail with orange juice and vanilla syrup are the perfect complement to a night out in a city with such stunning views. — Lauryn Azu

Other rooftop patios: Gene’s Sausage Shop and Delicatessen in Lincoln Square, Tavern on the Point in Edison Park, Twisted Spoke in West Town, Open Outcry Brewing Co. in Morgan Park
A newly opened patio: Goose Island Salt Shed Pub in West Town
Goose Island Salt Shed Pub started pouring drinks May 3. Founded by John Hall in 1988 on Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park, the Chicago brewery closed that original location in December and moved to its new home right next to the Salt Shed. The new pub’s patio looks out onto the river and downtown skyline, and has tables with umbrellas and couches to lounge on. Treat yourself to snacks such as pretzels with beer cheese and mustard or fill up on larger meals such as a smash burger with fries. And yes, you can visit the pub without a ticket to see a show. — Kayla Samoy

Other new patios: 101 Club in Streeterville, Casa Chi in Streeterville, Maxwell’s Trading in the West Loop, Kindling in the Loop
A patio to sip coffee and send emails: Beatrix Fulton Market in the West Loop
I usually do my cafe writing cramped in a poorly lit corner, rotating like a sunflower to the nearest open window. Beatrix is a wonderful alternative. There’s flexibility, abundant space and a motivating amount of lovely green plants at the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, bakery and cafe. You could start your morning on the comfy patio couches with a coffee, move into the shaded indoor/outdoor area with a pastry as the heat rises and then grab brunch with colleagues under umbrellas on the restaurant side. The main attraction (besides the free WiFi) is the cafe and bakery with a gorgeous display case of visually sumptuous baked goods. Beatrix’s pastry counter also opens as early as 7 a.m. and the restaurant closes at 9 p.m. at the earliest. — Ahmed Ali Akbar

Other patios to sip coffee and send emails: Build Coffee in Woodlawn, Dark Matter Osmium in Lakeview, Afro Joe’s Coffee and Tea in Beverly, Cafe 53 in Hyde Park
A patio with an after-work happy hour: Nicky’s of Beverly in Beverly
Soak up the sun after work underneath blues-themed murals on stacked shipping containers at this recently redesigned South Side restaurant that has been serving Chicago classics like pizza puffs for two decades. A three-hour happy hour Mondays through Fridays includes deals on beer, wine and craft cocktails, including a delicious watermelon basil vodka smash from mixologist Lizzy Benner. Situated on a bustling stretch of Western Avenue, Nicky’s family-friendly patio is perfect for casual hangouts and people-watching, and its cozy fire pits will keep you warm after the sun sets. — L.A.
10500 S. Western Ave., 773-233-3072, nickysofbeverly.com
Other patios with happy hours: Franklin Tap in the Loop (all day, rotating specials), Diego in West Town (Tuesday through Friday 4-6 p.m., Sunday 6 p.m.-midnight), Pilsen Yards in Pilsen (Wednesday through Friday 3-5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 3-4:30 p.m.), Bixi Beer in Logan Square (Sunday and Wednesday through Friday 3-5 p.m.)
A patio that’s dog-friendly with Chicago-style flavor: Justice of the Pies in Avalon Park
If your dog needs a little more space for that big stretch while you’re dining out and enjoying some favorite Chicago-style flavors, then my dog Kōl gives his big paws up to the patio at Justice of the Pies . Chef and owner Maya-Camille Broussard — and her chocolate goldendoodle Milo — clearly had comfort and style in mind when designing the bakery she opened just last year that’s accessible inside and out. You can easily move the lightweight metal chairs to make space for your pup. Then get some sweet and savory treats, including the seasonal Pie La Mode, a cup filled with warm peaches, a salted caramel sauce, vanilla soft serve ice cream and a whole slice of her salted caramel peach pie. The pie is one of Broussard’s signature flavors that goes back to her earliest days at the farmers market on Daley Plaza. — Louisa Chu
8655 S. Blackstone Ave., justiceofthepies.com
Other patios that are dog-friendly with Chicago-style flavor: The Wiener’s Circle in Lincoln Park (char dog), Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park (combo sausage and beef), Bungalow by Middle Brow in Logan Square (Tavern Tuesday veg supreme), Sweet Rabbit Bakery in Roscoe Village (seasonal fruit danish)
A patio for date night: Volo Restaurant Wine Bar in Roscoe Village
Impress your date with an intimate night out dining on flatbreads and charcuterie boards in cozy outdoor cabanas at Volo Restaurant Wine Bar, all underneath twinkling lights once the sun sets. A sizable wine menu features flights of rose on Wednesdays and selections from New Zealand, France and Spain. Pair your bubbly with chef-partner Stephen Dunne’s spring menu including croque-monsieur with ham, gruyere and tender greens, and finish the meal the romantic way with a decadent chocolate mousse. Summer weather calls for spritzes too, and Volo’s six prosecco-based spritzes are $7 during happy hour. — L.A .
2008 W. Roscoe St., 773-348-4600, volorestaurant.com
Other patios fit for date night: Gemini in Lincoln Park, The Hi-Low in Humboldt Park, Kubo in Lake View, Chez Joël in Little Italy
A patio with activities to keep you entertained: Central Park Bar in Avondale
If you’re looking to engage in some friendly competition while relaxing with a beverage, Central Park Bar in the Avondale neighborhood is one of my favorite spots thanks to its bumper pool table. Not nearly as prolific of a bar offering as the standard pool table, bumper pool tables are smaller with built-in obstacles that change up the game. There’s bingo on Mondays, trivia on Tuesdays and crafting events on Wednesdays from June to August, so there’s plenty to do. The bar offers a few prepackaged snacks provided by Beautiful Rind Chicago, but you can bring in food, so grab a poke bowl from Poke Okie just down the street. — K.S.
2924 N. Central Park Ave., 773-698-6063, centralparkbarchicago.com
Other patios with activities: Park and Field in Logan Square (bocce ball), Kaiser Tiger in West Loop (bocce ball and bags), Parson’s in Logan Square (pingpong), District Brew Yards in West Town (board games)

Severe Storms and Tornadoes Cause Destruction in Several States
Severe weather hit several parts of the united states over the weekend, killing more than 20 people and leaving hundreds of thousands without power..

Follow our updated coverage of Tuesday’s severe weather here .
Severe weather stretching across the Midwest and East Coast on Monday disrupted plans for millions of Americans trying to make it home after a busy weekend that was expected to break records for Memorial Day travel. The disruptions followed storms and tornadoes that killed at least 23 people in the South and left hundreds of thousands without power.
Flights at airports from Atlanta to Boston experienced ground delays and stops as severe weather, including heavy rain and potentially damaging wind and hail, moved into much of the Eastern United States on Monday afternoon and evening.
Parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were under severe storm watches through late Monday, and a tornado watch was issued for an area from northern Maryland through eastern North Carolina, including Washington, D.C. Heat and more thunderstorms were forecast for Texas and the Southern Plains on Tuesday, including possible hail and strong winds.
Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said that they had worked with the airlines to plan for the expected weather disruptions over the Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, 2.9 million people were screened at U.S. airports , the Transportation Security Administration said — a single-day record.
By midday on Monday, La Guardia Airport in New York City had reported average ground delays of 100 minutes. Flights were also delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world. And ground stops and major delays were reported or expected at airports in Chicago, Virginia, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia and Cleveland because of the storms, according to the F.A.A.
In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency on Monday morning after four people were killed over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, Gov. Beshear announced a fifth storm-related death in the state, a person who died from a heart attack while cutting fallen trees. More than 150,000 customers in the state were without power at midday after damaging winds.
Elsewhere, a tornado left at least seven people dead in North Texas, including two children ages 2 and 5. Eight people were killed in Arkansas, and two died in Oklahoma as severe storms swept through the region, flattening hundreds of buildings and blowing away homes. And severe thunderstorms in Virginia resulted in at least one fatality, officials said.
Share of customers without power
Thousands of others in the South and the Midwest were without power on Monday, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us .
Later on Monday, severe thunderstorms were expected from Texas to New York, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said . Flash flooding was possible from Maryland to the Catskill Mountains in New York, the Weather Service said , and tornadoes were possible in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Forecast risk of severe storms for Monday
The system was the latest to pummel the region over the past few days. Five people were killed and part of a city was obliterated in Iowa last week after a powerful tornado hit.
President Biden issued a statement of condolence to those affected by the storms, and he thanked emergency responders for their work.
“Jill and I are praying for those who tragically lost their lives as a result of devastating tornadoes that tore through Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, leveling entire communities and leaving a path of destruction in their wake,” Mr. Biden said.
Mr. Biden said that the federal government was “ready to provide support as needed.” He noted that the Memorial Day holiday storms came just weeks after counties in the Midwest and South were recovering from severe weather.
On Sunday, severe thunderstorms in Howell County, Mo., produced hail the size of baseballs and tornadoes that downed trees and damaged homes near the town of Mountain View, said Kelsey Angle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.
In Kentucky, Governor Beshear deployed the National Guard to help state forestry workers clear downed trees and dangerous debris. He activated the state’s price-gouging statute to prevent price increases on necessary supplies, and said he believed that the state would qualify for public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Emergency workers have reported high water, fallen trees and other dangerous conditions in about a third of Kentucky’s 120 counties, mostly in the western part of the state, Jim Gray, the Kentucky transportation secretary, said at a news conference. The storms also impacted nearly 100 state highways.
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott s igned a severe weather disaster declaration that covered 106 counties. Officials estimate that nearly 100 people were injured over the weekend, more than 200 homes were destroyed and over 220 buildings were damaged.
Johnny Diaz and Mike Ives contributed reporting.
