Travelling from Schiphol? Book your time slot (and follow the dress code!)

Naomi Lamaury

Schiphol Airport is trying out a new strategy to shorten the waiting times for passengers. How? With reserved time slots to pass through security checks and, of course, fashion tips.

Last year, people flying from the airport had to wait up to three hours just to get through security. This year, the airport is implementing new initiatives to avoid repeating this situation for passengers.

So what is Schiphol Airport’s answer to long queues? Handige (handy) 15-minute time slots to pass through the security — and smart wardrobe advice, reports RTL Nieuws .

Did you say time slots…?

Yes, we did. From now on, you can reserve a time slot online up to three days before your flight. If you’re at the security check at your reserved time, you go to a special queue and whizz straight to the front.

Don’t be late though. When you reserve a time slot online, you will receive a QR code by email that you must show at security. If you’re more than 15 minutes late, helaas pindakaas , you will be sent right back to the regular queue.

READ MORE | 19 best day trips from Amsterdam: the ultimate travel guide

Not sure what time is best? Don’t worry, the online reservation system will offer you multiple potential time slots based on your flight details from which you can choose.

What you should know about reserving a time slot:

  • This is only an option for flights flying to European destinations (within the Schengen Area)
  • The time slot is only for passing security checks, it doesn’t apply to checking in luggage
  • For families, a single time slot reservation is enough
  • For group travellers (that isn’t a family), each person should book their own time slot

Schiphol’s fashion tips

Everyone has their own ideas on what the best dress attire for the airport is. There are people in sweatpants and a hoodie, while others go glam wearing suits and high heels.

People watching at the airport. Boy the clothes some people wear! Too funny! — Dramama (@dramama82) August 31, 2012

Schiphol Airport is advising that you maybe shouldn’t wear your main character wardrobe during your travels.

Instead, they advise passengers to wear thin clothing, few layers, and low shoes to pass through security as fast as possible.

According to Schiphol Airport, leggings, sweatpants or jeans with a shirt is the perfect outfit They advise avoiding blazers, hoodies, and boots that you will need to take off when going through security.

The latest Schiphol restrictions

In addition to these initiatives, Schiphol Airport is also reducing the number of passengers departing from the airport during the May holidays (April 29 to May 7) by five percent.

Schiphol Airport is also hiring new staff. The airport has said that they will take on 850 new security staff with an incremental wage increase of 21% (finally!). However, it remains unclear whether their training has already been completed.

Schiphol still faces understaffing in other areas, however. Schiphol spokesman, Dennis Muller, says “We have enough staff there, but we are also short of staff during handling. Those people are employed by the airlines, they are also working very hard on that,” writes RTL Nieuws.

If you’ve got a trip planned for the May holidays departing from Schiphol Airport, make sure to check the time, check your fit and check in!

What do you think about the new campaign? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Naomi Lamaury

It’s a disgrace Schiphol doesn’t get their act together! Other even bigger airports have no problems what so ever…. Ie Rome, Dubai, London….. so why is Schiphol such a mess.

When do you get to lounge 1, 2, 3 or 4 after security, 101 guide for the different lounges at schiphol.

It always used to be a bit of a mystery to me… When do you depart from which Lounge at  Schiphol  when you’re going on holidays? And why is it that sometimes you can go to your favourite store or sushi place and sometimes you cant? Because I’ve been to Schiphol so many times for Your Little Black Book and because they are doing a renovation at Schiphol I got given a guided tour in the area behind the passport control . Regardless the many times I’ve been to Schiphol, I actually discovered some new spots!

In this blog I made a guide about the different departure halls at Schiphol and about the nicest shops and restaurants to go to.

Have fun when you’re still going on holidays this fall!

When do you get here? Whenever you fly to a Schengen country. Think of countries like: Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Denmark and more countries.

Shopping tips: In this departure hall you will find popular See Buy Fly stores, like the  Perfumes & Cosmetics , News & Books (handy to score a magazine for in the plane), Sunglasses  and more. Here you will also find stores like  Hugo Boss,  Gassan Watches & Jewellery  and  Rituals .

Food tips: For sushi and a glass of wine you have to go to Bubbles Seafood & Wine Bar , have a good start of your day with a healthy juice from Juicy Details , and go for coffee to  Starbucks  and order a piece of chocolate at  Café Chocolat .

TIP: in Lounge 1 you will find the Airport Park with a rooftop terrace  where you can go to for some fresh air . before take off. It’s the only spot at Schiphol where you can go outside when you passed Immigration. A very green  park  full with artificial grass and plants. A recommendation for when the weather is nice! (When it rains the Parc terrace is closed).

lounge 2 >> Schiphol guide >>

When do you get here? Here you have to be when you are flying intercontinental with   KLM or Sky Team Partners . Nice to know: from departure hall 2 you can also get into departure hall 3. In Lounge 2 there’e a huge construction going on but the first new stores are already open!

Shopping tips: Did you know you can get Dollars out of the ABN AMRO bank at Schiphol? I always get some out when I go to America to have some cash with me. In Lounge 2 you also find the electronics store, Perfumes & Cosmetics, News & Books and a new store from Gassan Watches & Jewellery. On the first floor there’s the Express Spa. Nice for a massage when you have a delay!

Food tips: In departure hall 2 you can get your favourite coffee at Starbucks, but I like restaurant the  Dutch Bar  at the Holland Boulevard the best. Fresh juices, sandwiches, Dutch ‘poffertjes’ and more. On the first floor there’s a foodcourt

lounge 3 >> Schiphol Guide >>

When do you get here? Here you get to when you are flying intercontinental,  with other companies then KLM or Sky Team Partners.  You can go from this departure hall to departure hall 2 without showing your passport.

Shopping tips: At the  Fashion & Travel shop they have a lot of surprisingly nice fashion brands. From Marc by Marc Jacobs bags to Furla bags and clothing for ladies and gents. Absolutely no boring brands! Whoever has a rich credit card has to go to Burberry and  Hermès for a shopping spree.

For people with a normal budget, like you and me,  Victoria’s Secret  and  Perfumes & Cosmetics  are nice stores to treat yourself. Or go to  MAC Cosmetics  for a quick visit and get your make-up done. Really handy for when you have an early flight and you don’t have the time to do this at home.

Tip for men:  Exquisite Luxury Liquors & Tobacco . Here they sell a very diverse range of different kinds of whisky. I go there a lot to surprise my lover with a present.

Food tips:  For fresh and healthy juices you have to go to Juicy Details , the best coffee you get at  EAST Bar & Bites or Starbucks, at  Bread!  you get the best sandwiches. Good to know: Bread! is open 24 hours a day so if you have a really really early flight or are delayed… you can always go there for something to eat!

LOUNGE 4 >> SCHIPHOL GUIDE

When do you get there? You will only depart from Lounge 4 when you fly to a Schengen country with a low cost carrier. This Lounge is smaller than the other Lounges at Schiphol.

Shopping tips: In the store at Lounge 4 you find different brands, like: Rituals, Tommy Hilfiger, Swatch and O.P.I.

Food tips:  When I fly from Lounge I like to grab a bite and drink at Urban Food Market!

schiphol-overview

PS:  I always used to call the part after the passport control and security, ‘at the back of customs’.  I never knew this is officially only the part of the airport when you arrive in a country. So I really learned something :-).

New look for shopping at Schiphol with a focus on total experience

From now on, passengers travelling abroad via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will see a new positioning strategy for retail and catering outlets at the airport. The focus is on the total online and offline shopping experience and international consumers, with the Dutch icons playing an important role. This new approach will allow the airport to offer both Dutch and international passengers a distinctive and multifaceted shopping and dining experience that can only be found in the Netherlands.

The change means that See Buy Fly will no longer appear as a separate brand in the store image. This is because the airport will be focusing more on creating a broader shopping and dining experience for Dutch and international passengers, while the See Buy Fly concept is mainly associated with price promotions. In addition to the long list of exclusive shops and products, Schiphol also boasts modern restaurants, exclusive museums such as the Rijksmuseum and NEMO, a library and much more. The new positioning can be seen both in the terminal and on all online channels available for consumers to explore.

We want to position shopping at Schiphol in a way that reflects the current trends, in which experience, internationalisation and online are playing an increasingly important role. We are extremely proud to have designed a shopping experience with a look that Dutch citizens will recognise and that offers unique encounters with Dutch icons that international passengers will enjoy.

fashion & travel schiphol

New shopping experience Passengers can see the change reflected in a new visual positioning strategy for shopping at Schiphol that largely includes the colour orange, in traditional and surprising Dutch products, and in well-known and lesser known Dutch and international brands. Inspiring experiences such as the Rijksmuseum and NEMO, which are part of Schiphol’s Holland Boulevard in Departure Lounge 2, will be even more actively advertised to passengers as well.

The new identity will be visible in more and more places. The shopping environment on Schiphol.nl has been designed in the new style with a wealth of product information. Passengers can also browse through and reserve products from the comfort of their home ( Click & Collect ). The new style can be seen in the terminal as well, in the form of new adverts and Dutch products at the shops located both before and after Security Control.

Unique Dutch Experience In addition to the world-class Rijksmuseum and NEMO, there are even more Dutch treasures to discover at Schiphol that make the shopping experience at our airport unique. Examples include the Dutch cuisine at grand café Tastes from the Lowlands, furniture made by leading Dutch designers like Marcel Wanders, and other exciting and sustainable Dutch newcomers such as the Health Food Wall, the Yoghurt Barn and Soup&Bakery by the Verspillingsfabriek. Passengers can also purchase products from a range of Dutch brands, such as Tony’s Chocolonely in Departure Lounge 3.

Schiphol airport amsterdam; terminal 2.

Every time I visit this airport I wish KLM has direct flights to Beirut. Schiphol has positive vibes, a great choice of shopping, amazing food choices and is built to impress. Different from other European airports, and in spite of its load of passengers, you feel neither the rush nor the wait.

schiphol-airport-nogarlicnoonions-1802018-05-14-09-34-49

It starts at the security check where they don’t ask you to remove your shoes or even remove your laptop from the bag. Pass passport control and enjoy a huge terminal spread on thousands of square meters with an attraction around every corner. Mc.Donalds and the food court on the first floor, shopping on ground level with a cafe on every corner.

schiphol-airport-nogarlicnoonions-1582018-05-14-09-34-27

All kinds of shopping, endless choices of food, an internet corner, a corner for babies, a kids playground, relaxing sofas and much more. Visit the technology shop, you’ll like their choices. Try Hermes, it’s one of my favorite brands. Buy cheese and remember Amsterdam.

I’ve only visited Schiphol twice in the last year and will try to pass by again whenever I have the chance to. Check out the hundreds of photos I’ve taken and plan your next visit.

Millennials , aged between their late 20s and early 40s, are approaching the age for major life milestones: they've gained some ground in their careers, some are thinking about settling down with a family, and others have enough disposable income to splash on designer goods.

For the wealthiest among them, luxury status symbols can be a way to showcase your success to others. Rich millennials in the US have been known to splash out on their pets, new laundry rooms, and expensive coffee machines.

And over in China, rich millennials have their own ideas of what counts as a luxury status symbol. They've followed suit in embracing quiet luxury — expensive goods that aren't clocked by the untrained eye — and some are opting to have fewer kids to focus on their careers and are traveling solo.

Here are 11 luxury status symbols for Chinese millennials:

1. They've moved past allegiance with specific brands

Garish Gucci prints and flashy Louis Vuitton logos are no longer a top priority for luxury customers looking to display their style as a status symbol. These millennials are less loyal to specific brands than their parent's generation.

They "seek products and experiences that not only reflect their personal style and aspirations but also resonate with their cultural identity and values," Daniel Langer, a Pepperdine University luxury professor and CEO of the luxury strategy firm Équité, told Business Insider.

Customers want more personal items that reflect their values over a generic symbol of spending power.

It's more about an "inward feeling rather than an outward projection," said Amrita Banta, managing director of luxury insights firm Agility Research & Strategy.

2. Less loud luxury, more quiet luxury

Those who buy from designer brands are doing so more subtly. "Laoqianfeng" — a concept similar to the Western old-money aesthetic — has become a favorite of rich millennials in China. It refers to looking put together in an effortless way.

"This younger cohort is inclined to convey their elevated societal standing in understated ways," Elisa Harca, CEO of consultancy firm Red Ant Asia, told Business Insider.

Harca points to brands like The Row , which exemplify this style. The brand, founded by former child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, prioritizes an anti-trendiness, focusing instead on simplicity, style, and comfort.

Even though the clothes may look understated, the key is in the details. Wealthy customers still want a high standard of customer service through talking one-on-one to sales assistance or being in contact with brands over WeChat to hear about exclusive products, Harca said.

Expect to see these rich millennials mixing luxury casual wear like T-shirts and sneakers with traditional luxury brands, Banta told BI.

3. Group travel is out, solo travel is in

Travel has also changed for today's rich millennials compared to their parents.

When their parts were growing up, China's world tourism was still in its infancy, which meant that organized tour groups were the travel option of choice for those with money. They were attracted to the safety and accessibility of traveling in a big group, said Harca.

But now younger Chinese people, especially those already well-traveled or have studied abroad, are opting for solo travel or traveling with small groups of friends.

Adventurous and immersive experiences to one-of-a-kind destinations are top of the travel list for this cohort — think glamping safaris and trips to Antarctica or Iceland , Banta told BI.

4. Pre-Loved Luxury Fashion

Pre-loved luxury fashion has taken off in the West as a more sustainable way to shop for designer brands. And many rich millennials in China are following suit.

For one, it's more sustainable . Reflecting your values in your purchases is becoming more important for customers, and as such, the environmental impact of the textile industry is a great concern for those buying clothes, said Olivia Plotnick, founder of Wai Social, a Shanghai-based social media agency.

So, luxury consumers are turning to secondhand clothes using platforms like Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal, and Mercari.

For some Chinese people, secondhand clothing items are associated with superstitions of bad luck and negative energy. But these beliefs hold less weight for younger generations, Harca told BI.

An added bonus of vintage and secondhand clothes is that they can be more individual than clothes found on the rack. Finding unique pre-loved clothes is a way to express individuality through fashion choices, Harca said. These items can have a more personal story behind them.

5. Buying products that come with an experience

Social media and the internet have made it easier to identify highly coveted items, so for luxury consumers, these brands are becoming too conspicuous.

Related stories

Instead, they're looking for ways to make these things more individual.

An exec at drinks conglomerate Diageo told BI about how the company is trying to appeal to this type of consumer as its Asian whisky market grows. It's doing so by investing in reopening distilleries like Port Ellen off the coast of Scotland to offer premium whisky tours .

"It's not enough to just say this is 45-year-old Port Ellen cask. They want to say they journeyed to Scotland, tested all these different whiskies, and to tell you about the experiences they had," said Ewan Andrew, Diageo president of global supply chain & procurement.

There are two main reasons customers are drawn to these experiential goods, according to Langer.

First, some people are attracted to brands that make them feel like part of an exclusive club and find their egos satisfied by VIP experiences. Another group finds more satisfaction in the authenticity and individuality of these experiences over overt displays of wealth.

6. Fine dining in Michelin-starred and Black Pearl-rated restaurants

Another emerging hobby among this affluent group is enjoying the burgeoning fine dining industry.

The Michelin Guide , which entered China in 2016, attracted some criticism for being too Western-centric, according to the South China Morning Post . That's where the Black Pearl guide comes in: it was set up in 2018 by Meituan , a Chinese food delivery giant, to appeal to Chinese consumers from a Chinese perspective.

But both guides are still popular with luxury consumers, according to Banta. These customers like to tick off highly rated restaurants in their own city and wherever they travel.

7. Choosing not to have kids

There's also been a cultural shift in societal attitudes toward marriage and parenthood, changing how wealthy millennials approach life milestones.

Some see having kids as a bad investment . Instead, this generation is more inclined to prioritize personal freedom, career development , and individual pursuits over starting a family, according to Harca.

8. Those who want kids are keen to maintain a level of luxury after giving birth

Luxury postnatal retreats have become popular with wealthy millennials, and some can cost over 200,000 yuan ($28,000) a month, Banta told BI.

Some new mothers in China have been flocking to these luxury post-natal retreats in Singapore, Bloomberg reported . The centers offer around-the-clock care for new parents including lactation consultants, nannies, and chefs.

The custom of staying inside your home for a month to recuperate after childbirth has been documented as early as 960 in China.

Modern iterations of these retreats are taking the concept to new, luxurious heights.

Some of these retreats in Singapore, like Clover Suites, offer month-long trips for new mothers, which include aesthetics clinics, herbal baths, and in-house physiotherapy centers. At Clover Suites, new mothers can expect restaurant-style meals and can enjoy some rest while nurses or nannies take care of their children.

And when they come back home, they're sure to spend on expensive luxury cots too, Banta added.

9. Splashing out on luxury home decor

Chinese millennials are investing their money in luxury home décor to elevate their living spaces and enhance their quality of life, Plotnick told BI.

She added that brands like Tom Dixon and Muuto are popular choices for furniture, lighting, and home accessories in China.

"They are designing every room with painstaking detail," according to Banta.

10. Splurging on wellness

Luxury wellness and self-care products, such as skincare, beauty , and wellness supplements , are all gaining popularity among health-conscious Chinese millennials, Potnick told BI.

Potnick pointed to one popular brand, mesoestetic , which offers aesthetic treatments like peels and facial needling.

The pandemic spurred the wellness trend, particularly for Gen Z and millennials.

Post COVID, people became more interested in wellness supplements to aid diet and improve health, Gabriella Tegen, cofounder and CEO of e-commerce subscription platform Smartrr, previously told BI . And getting regular aesthetic treatments has become a top priority for affluent millennials, Banta told BI.

McKinsey 2024 wellness report showed that 85% of its survey participants from China had purchased more in the longevity and healthy-aging category in the past year than in prior years, with Gen Z and millennials leading the charge over older generations.

11. Brands that stand for something

This cohort of wealthy millennials in China is more concerned about shopping from sustainable brands .

Eco-friendly materials and sustainable production are an increasingly important consideration for luxury purchases, Plotnick said.

Independent luxury brands that offer more authentic products and those that draw on cultural heritage are also highly in demand, she said.

How to Navigate London’s Wondrous (and Very Big) V&A Museum

Paintings, ceramics, photography, fashion, furniture and more: The Victoria and Albert Museum is a treasure trove of art and design. Here’s one besotted visitor’s plan for taking it all in.

In a museum gallery full of replicas of centuries-old sculptures, visitors are tiny in comparison to a huge sculpture of a nude male figure: Michelangelo's David.

By Andrew Ferren

Andrew Ferren, a frequent contributor to the Travel section, has visited the V&A dozens of times and looks forward to exploring the new satellite buildings when they open in East London in 2025.

Even for someone who loves getting lost in museums — especially “everything museums” like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York — London’s Victoria and Albert Museum might have been my Waterloo. The statistics are daunting: 5,000 years of artistic production with more than 60,000 works on view (from a collection of some 2.8 million) in about 150 galleries beneath 21 acres of roof.

The V&A typically draws around 3 million annual visitors, but even on the busiest days, the museum has the space and setup to largely avoid the sense of competing with the crowds. Since visiting the permanent collection is free (some exhibitions cost up to 20 pounds, or about $25), once you’re in the door you can just start wandering. Step right for medieval mosaics and Renaissance tapestries or go deep for 1940s Paris fashion, Baroque sculpture and, beyond that, Buddhist art.

It’s easy to spend an entire day in the V&A. Here’s a plan for making the most of your visit. But first a bit of background.

An eclectic treasure trove

If the British Museum is known as Britain’s attic — an abundance of artistic and cultural relics from the realm and around the globe — then the V&A is the country’s classroom. It, too, is a trove of exemplary works, from exquisite Raphael drawings to groovy 1970s plastic radios; Coptic tunics to Alexander McQueen couture gowns; vividly hued Islamic tiles to a bunch of grand English beds. These objects were displayed not just to delight connoisseurs, but to provide great art and ideas to educate British designers, manufacturers and workers in good taste and technical prowess.

The museum was the pet project of Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria, who had seen firsthand that British manufactured goods were not always top of the class. By displaying applied arts (textiles, ceramics, glass and other manufactured objects) alongside fine arts (architecture, painting and sculpture), the new museum would democratize aesthetic appreciation and inspire better designs for better products.

Originally known as the South Kensington Museum, the V&A opened in 1857 in temporary structures while new buildings were constructed. Incorporated into the new museum were libraries and schools for science and art, including one for women. The leading artists of the time, such as Frederic Leighton and William Morris, contributed to its décor. Such was its embrace of modernity, that the world’s first museum exhibition of photography (the medium was “invented’ only in the 1820s) was held here in 1858.

Though Prince Albert died in 1861, the museum continued to expand. In 1899, Queen Victoria laid the cornerstone of a grand new entrance wing along Cromwell Road and renamed the complex the Victoria and Albert Museum.

If that sounds fusty, it’s not. More than 165 years after its opening, the V&A’s pioneering spirit hasn’t faded. Its fashion blockbusters, like “Naomi: In Fashion,” celebrating the model Naomi Campbell (opening June 22), are must-see shows. And its outreach programs, studio classes and parties engage the public as few museums do. Recently, the V&A’s reach has been growing, with offshoots such as the Scottish V&A Dundee , a kid-centric Young V&A and two new museum buildings — one featuring nearly 250,000 works — opening in East London in 2025.

Many contemporary artists and designers claim the V&A as among their favorite museums, and one to which they return again and again. Though neither artist nor designer, I, too, claim the V&A as a favorite museum and have visited dozens of times, often for less than an hour just to wow my young kids with the monumental plaster casts of European monuments or even just to get out of the rain.

But I knew there were still sections I’d never visited. So, after an absence of three years, I spent a day there and came up with a game plan for others to navigate those vast halls.

Get there at 10 a.m., when the doors open, so you can breeze through the ground-floor galleries while they are still virtually empty and then head to more remote parts.

Since fabrics are fragile and fade, the fashion exhibits are changed regularly and there’s always something fresh and engaging to see. From there, wind past the entrance through the arts of Asia, from the elegantly simple furniture of Ming China to the intricately carved lacquerware of Japan, to the eye-poppingly vivid blue tile reliefs and stunning silk carpets such as the 16th-century Ardibil carpet from Persia.

Then into the Cast Courts, three huge galleries packed with full-size reproductions — plaster and metal casts — of sculptures and building fragments from around Europe. Exact copies of medieval tombs line the floor while masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David, Trajan’s Column and Renaissance church facades rise toward the ceiling. One can easily get stuck here, awed by the scale and charmed by the concept of corralling massive replicas from across the centuries into a playground for architecture buffs.

From there it’s an easy slide into the adjacent medieval and Renaissance galleries, which cover Europe from 300 to 1600, and where the colorful fourth- and fifth-century tapestry fragments on view or the radiant gold-backed mosaics from Ravenna, Italy, reveal that the Dark Ages were not entirely devoid of light and color.

The later galleries reveal just how connected and sophisticated many parts of Europe were in the Renaissance. Exquisite regional products — metalwork and armor from Germany, shimmering lusterware ceramics from Spain, tapestries from Brussels — became sought after on an international marketplace.

Carving your own path

In such a sprawling museum, there is no single logical or even chronological path to follow. For many, that’s part of the V&A’s appeal: the quirky juxtapositions one encounters roaming its six floors (the ground floor is numbered zero, so the “fourth floor” is actually the fifth level; the V&A also has a -1 basement level).

So on my visit, once the galleries started filling up at midday, I took the elevator to the remote fourth-floor ceramics galleries and then made my way to the lower floors.

On the fourth floor, it feels as if virtually everything ever made of clay or porcelain — Ming, majolica, Meissen, you name it — is displayed in floor-to-ceiling cases, including stacks of Chinese bowls salvaged from a ship that sank in 1400 off the Malay Peninsula.

Just when you think one can’t stretch the clay any further, you get to a display about Josiah Wedgwood and his innovative Jasperware that became the rage around the world in the 18th century. (The V&A also has an outpost in Stoke-on-Trent dedicated entirely to Wedgwood). The remaining fourth-floor galleries showcase furniture from the last 600 years.

The third floor offers a similar range of media and epochs — from international glass in all its facets to architectural models. One might expect Venetian Murano glass to reign supreme, but the quirky and colorful 18th-century German enameled glass, as well as green-hued glasses and goblets adorned with blobs of glass steal the show.

On the second floor, a network of long galleries offers deep dives into religious stained glass, small-scale bronze sculptures, English paintings and drawings, as well as tapestries. Nearby, gorgeous murals by Frederic Leighton push the V&A propaganda in themes like “The Arts Applied to War” and “The Arts Applied to Peace.”

Also on the second floor, the Photography Center recently expanded its galleries to become Britain’s largest photography exhibition center. Part of a display called “Design: 1900-Now,” features a recent acquisition: a store-bought snorkeling mask that had been adapted by an Italian designer into a functioning oxygen mask during the darkest days of the Covid crisis in 2020.

In a country famous for its crown jewels, the V&A’s spot-lit jewelry gallery packs in everything from fifth-century Byzantine bracelets to jaunty 1970s body jewelry. Standouts include the Townshend jewels — a virtual encyclopedia of gemstones, from colored diamonds to opals, each set in individual rings and displayed in swirls of brilliant color.

And finally, stretching almost across the entire second floor is a display of every imaginable type of ironwork. Seeing these works, such as the monumental 19th-century Gothic Revival choir screen from Salisbury Cathedral, calls to mind the Goethe quote that “architecture is frozen music.”

Take a break then keep going

Even if you’re not hungry, head to the ground level to the Refreshment Rooms, the world’s first museum cafe, which opened in 1868. Designed by the leading talents of the day — James Gamble, William Morris, Philip Webb, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward J. Poynter — the original decoration remains largely intact, a snapshot of Victorian modernity. Back in the day, each room had a different menu and proposed clientele, but today, for about £10, visitors can choose from a buffet of hot English fare, quiches, sandwiches, beer, wine or soft drinks, and take their meal into whichever room they find most pleasing.

Back in the galleries, I had saved what I considered the best for last: some two dozen British galleries (spread between levels 1 and 3) that tell the country’s history from the Tudors to the Victorians through paintings, furniture, clothing, musical instruments, textiles and truly fabulous beds, including the Great Bed of Ware, a massive four-poster built in 1590 for an inn. It measures nearly 11 feet on each side, supposedly able to accommodate four couples. Centuries-old graffiti covers practically every plank, and its fame merited a mention in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”: “… as many lies as will lie in thy sheet of paper, although the sheet were big enough for the bed of Ware.”

And then finally, the most extraordinary works in the museum, shown in a cathedral-like space: the famous Rafael cartoons for the tapestries that were created to adorn the Sistine Chapel in 1515-16. Commissioned by Pope Leo X, Raphael painted the designs on paper, which would have been used as the guide for the weavers to follow. Now owned by King Charles III and considered among the greatest works of Renaissance art, they were created as part of a manufacturing process, so it seems wholly appropriate they are on loan to the V&A, where fine art and manufacturing go hand in hand.
