Nelly Korda wins Mizuho Americas Open, captures sixth title in last 7 LPGA Tour starts

JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY - MAY 19: Nelly Korda of the United States plays her shot from the fourth tee during the final round of the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National Golf Club on May 19, 2024 in Jersey City, New Jersey. (Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images)

Nelly Korda’s run of dominance continues. After Rose Zhang ended Korda’s streak of consecutive LPGA tournament titles at five last week, Korda rebounded this week to win the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National on Sunday and capture her sixth win in her last seven starts.

With the victory, the 25-year-old from Bradenton, Fla., became the first player to win six or more tournaments in a season since South Korea’s Inbee Park in 2013. She’s the eighth player since 1980 to accomplish the feat, joining Betsy King, Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Lorena Ochoa, Beth Daniel, Yani Tseng and Park.

On Sunday, it came down to the last hole. Korda, the current top-ranked women’s player, entered the final round with a two-shot lead over Australia’s Hannah Green. After a rocky front nine, in which she bogeyed three times, Korda birdied the 10th, 13th and 15th holes. Green’s scorecard matched on those holes, and the two entered the 18th tied at 14-under, but a final bogey ultimately sunk Green as Korda finished the round with a one-stroke lead at 1-under 71.

After carding a 2-under 70 in the opening round, Korda improved in Rounds 2 and 3, with a 4-under 68 and 7-under 65, respectively. Her 65 on Saturday tied her lowest round of the season — the final day at the Ford Championship, which she won in March.

Sunday’s victory is just the latest in what has been a remarkable 2024 campaign for Korda, who is now the first American woman to win six or more times in a season since Daniel won seven titles in 1990. Korda scored her fifth straight tournament win at the Chevron Championship last month, joining Nancy Lopez (1978) and Sorenstam (2004, 2005) as the only players to go five-for-five on the LPGA.

Zhang — the 20-year-old Californian — snapped Korda’s run with a win last Sunday at the Cognizant Founders Cup, recording a two-shot victory over Sweden’s Madelene Sagström (Korda finished the event tied for seventh). There was much hype surrounding Zhang, who won last year’s Mizuho Americas Open in her pro debut, entering this year’s tournament, but she withdrew due to an illness after completing three holes Thursday.

“I was really looking forward to trying to defend my title, but unfortunately spent the last 12 hours with really bad intestinal pain,” Zhang wrote on her Instagram story.

Zhang was among 10 players who withdrew from the event in the first two days, with seven of those withdrawals due to various illnesses and the others due to injuries, according to the LPGA.

As for Korda, she managed to avoid those setbacks en route to her 14th LPGA Tour win Sunday, as she continued to show why she’s the golfer to beat.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Nelly Korda won a back nine showdown with Hannah Green of Australia with a par on the 18th hole to capture the Mizuho Americas Open by a stroke Sunday for her sixth win in seven starts on the LPGA Tour this year.

The victory made the 25-year-old American the first player since Inbee Park (2013) to record six wins in a single season.

“Oh, my gosh, six," Korda said. "I can’t even really gather myself right now with that, the head to head that Hannah and I had pretty much all day. Wasn’t my best stuff out there today, but fought really hard on the back nine.

"It was just amazing to share the stage with Hannah.”

Korda also bounced back from seeing her record-tying five-tournament winning streak snapped last week by Rose Zhang at the Cognizant Founders Cup. Zhang withdrew Thursday after three holes with an intestinal issue.

After playing the front nine in 2-over, Korda matched birdies with Green on the 10th, 13th and 15th holes at scenic Liberty National to stay tied with Green, whose two wins this year made her the only other multiple winner on tour this year.

Korda, the third-round leader by two shots, shot a final-round 71 and finished at 14-under 274. Green had a 70 and finished at 275.

After Korda put her drive in the fairway on the the par-4, No. 18, Green pulled her drive into the left rough. Her second to the green was short and left and still in the rough. After Korda hit her approach to 15 feet from the hole, Green's chip over a bunker landed 10 feet in front of the hole and then rolled back a little.

Korda putted to tap-in range and finished out, while Green's putt to extend the tournament to a playoff never touched the hole.

Korda then raised her hands and accepted the cheers from the crowd in this event held with a view of the New York City skyline and Statue of Liberty in the background.

Jennifer Kupcho, who lost this event in a playoff with Zhang last year, finished tied for third with rookie Gabriela Ruffels of Australia and Ariya Jutanugarn and Chanettee Wannasaen, both of Thailand.

Playing hours before the leaders teed off, Wannasaen had the best round of the day with a 7-under 65. Jutanugarn had a 70, Kupcho shot 71 and Ruffels had a 72 in finishing third for the second straight week.

After being tied for the lead by Ayaka Furue of Japan and Kupcho with nine holes to play, Korda and Green turned the tournament into a two-player race with their matching birdies to open a four-shot lead over the rest of the field. When one hit it close, the other followed.

Furue finished in a large group at 9-under.

The win was the 14th for Korda and she joined a list of players who have won six times in a year since 1980: Betsy King (1989), Annika Sorenstam (1997, 2003), Karrie Webb (1999, 2000), Lorena Ochoa (2006, 2008), Park, Beth Daniel (1990) and Yani Tseng (2011).

Korda earned $450,000, bringing her career earnings to $11,880,981 and her season earnings to $2,943,708.

Concert review: Rank-rising country artist Riley Green

Country artist Riley Green has quickly been rising in the ranks of modern country music, and with an energetic show like he put on at Northern Quest Resort & Casino it isn’t difficult to understand why.

Green is on the “Ain’t My Last Rodeo Tour” in support of his second full-length album of the same name, which was released in October of last year. Last month, he also released a 7-track EP titled “Way Out Here.”

Green’s performance on May 16 was a windy one in Airway Heights with concert goers struggling to keep hold of their hats and done-up hair – but that wouldn’t stop Green and company from keeping the music loud and the energy high.

The show began with an outstanding video introduction featuring Green’s beloved corgi, Carl, before Green appeared sporting an Atlanta Braves cap, a red solo cup, and an acoustic guitar.

Vocally, Green’s southern roots were apparent, but the accent didn’t hinder his deep and strong voice that remained powerful throughout the evening. He performed a range of songs from his multiple albums and EP releases thus far, including preverbal fan favorites such as “Different ‘Round Here,” “I Wish Grandpa’s Never Died” and “When She Comes Home Tonight.”

Green and the band kept the energy up and weren’t afraid to have a good time with consistent stories, song context and fan interactions as the show progressed – including Green signing hats mid-song a number of times. On the production side, fan experience was obviously very important with those in the crowd being given their time to shine on the big screen nearly as frequently as Green himself. The pre-recorded visuals and impressive light show were also

On the instrumental end, it was difficult to not notice how great the mixing was – something a fair number of bands and production crews can struggle with in real time. Each instrument was in perfect tandem without taking over Green’s vocals. Each instrument was given their time to shine but the electric guitar and drums were usually driving the performance with the pedal steel also given a noticeable place in the mix, a beautiful instrument that can get left out of the show at times. Various instruments instrumental to country music but seemingly forgotten by many of the modern radio hits were explored throughout the night, including the pedal steel, banjo, and mandolin. The band was outstanding and tight as can be, but Green himself is arguably at his best when the sound is stripped back, such as when performing a newer fan favorite in “Jesus Saves” with nothing but an acoustic guitar.

Two openers joined Green, one of which being rising country artist Ella Langley. Langley impressed right out the gate with strong vocals, particularly an impressively powerful chest voice. Langley herself interacted with the early crowd frequently, told a few stories, and wasn’t afraid to let how good of a time she was having come across. Later in the night, she would join Green for a beautiful cover duet of Jamey Johnson’s classic “In Color.”

Green was also joined by ‘90s country hitmaker Tracy Lawrence. Lawrence came through in performing the classics like “Time Marches On” and “Paint Me A Birmingham” along with many others. At 56, Lawrence is an older performer and the age can be a little obvious at times, but the hits still hit and he was seemingly as high energy as ever. Lawrence performed a section of covers during his set (including the timeless Charlie Daniels Band hit “The Devil Went Down To Georgia where fiddle player Joe Caverlee truly shined) and would also join Green for a cover of the beloved tune “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” by the recently deceased Toby Keith.

Overall, Riley Green and company put on a great show all around with high energy, prominent fan experiences, and musical excellence with a perfect mix of southern rock and neo-traditional country roots.

Packers ticket prices reflect a tougher, more balanced schedule, except for game in Brazil

green tour giannone

GREEN BAY – Hands down, the most expensive game on the Green Bay Packers' schedule will be the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil. That is, if you can get tickets.

Otherwise, tickets are slightly higher, overall, than they were at this time last year, but prices are more evenly distributed than last season. The average lowest get-in price for 17 games in 2023 was $324. This year it is $347. The price is determined by averaging the lowest prices on Friday at 11 secondary marketplaces.

Last season, prices ranged from $366 to $90, with five games in the $200 to $299 range. This year, prices range from $296 to $98, not counting Brazil, with 11 games in the $200 to $299 range.

Green Bay Packers Tickets

As for Brazil, only one of the secondary marketplaces we regularly survey was offering Brazil tickets. The lowest-cost ticket on VividSeats on Friday was $1,173. Locally, Event USA in Ashwaubenon sold game packages for $3,395 and more. Packages that include transportation, hotels and other amenities were $6,200 and higher. Not that they won't sell. Dennis Garrity, president of Event USA, said fans were putting down deposits before the final pricing was even determined.

Even at those high prices, tickets might be hard to find. The Packers are the most popular NFL team in Brazil and fans there will be scrambling to go to the game themselves. Arena Corinthians stadium has a normal capacity of 49,205, and even if expanded to 65,000 seats, as it was for the World Cup in 2014, it would still rank among the smallest in the NFL. Lambeau Field's capacity is 81,000.

More: Packers to open 2024 NFL season in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Philadelphia Eagles

This time of the year, it's a sellers market. Prices will change as the season nears, and again during the season as the quality of various matchups become known.

The six most expensive games as of May 17:

  • Packers at Eagles, Sao Paulo, Brazil, $1,173.
  • Vikings at Packers, $296
  • Lions at Packers, $285
  • Packers at Bears, $278
  • Colts at Packers, $271
  • 49ers at Packers, $270

The five least expensive games as of May 17:

  • Packers at Jaguars, $98
  • Saints at Packers, $137
  • Packers at Vikings, $142
  • Packers at Rams, $164
  • Dolphins at Packers, $179 (Thanksgiving)

How do we come to these ticket prices?

For our look at Packers' tickets prices, we average the lowest ticket prices at 11 secondary-market websites:  Event USA,   Gametime ,  Green Bay Ticket Service ,   SeatGeek ,  StubHub ,  TicketIQ ,  Ticket King ,  Ticketmaster ,  TickPick,   TicketSmarter  and  Vivid Seats .

Note that ticket brokers can add fees on top of the prices listed here, so actual costs might be higher.

The following are secondary market ticket prices as of Friday and our guesses as to why they are where they are.

Sept. 6, 7:15 p.m., Philadelphia Eagles, Arena Corinthians, São Paulo, Brazil, Peacock (NBCUniversal) and local stations in Green Bay/Milwaukee

Face-price range: N/A

Average lowest-cost seat: $1,178

Range of lowest-cost seats: $1,178

What is special about this game:  A very small sample size for this game, but accept that it's going to be more expensive than the Packers game in London in 2022. Packers fans in Brazil are nuts about this game.

Sept. 15, Noon, Indianapolis Colts, Lambeau Field, FOX

Face-price range: $132-$175

Average lowest-cost seat: $270

Range of lowest-cost seats: $236-$330

What is special about this game:  Season home opener and the only time Green package ticket holders will see the Packers until mid-October.

Sept. 22, Noon, Tennessee Titans, Nissan Stadium, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $202

Range of lowest-cost seats: $137-$241

What is special about this game: Packers head coach Matt LaFleur coached for the Titans for one year before getting his first head-coaching job in Green Bay. He's 1-1 against his former team.

Sept. 29, Noon, Minnesota Vikings, Lambeau Field, CBS

Average lowest-cost seat: $296

Range of lowest-cost seats: $207-$425

What is special about this game: The Vikings and Packers won road games against each other last year. If the Packers want to keep pace with the Detroit Lions for the division championship, they will need to win divisional games. This game is twice as expensive as the game in Minnesota near the end of the year.

Oct. 6, 3:25 p.m., Los Angeles Rams, SoFI Stadium, CBS

Average lowest-cost seat: $164

Range of lowest-cost seats: $139-$203

What is special about this game:  Five of the last six games, dating to 2015, between these teams were at Lambeau Field. The Packers won all the home games and lost the one road game, but that was before SoFI Stadium opened. USA Today ranked SoFi the second-best stadium in the NFL, for Packers fans contemplating a trip.

Oct. 13, Noon, Arizona Cardinals, Lambeau Field, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $206

Range of lowest-cost seats: $209-$254

What is special about this game: Green package ticket holders return to Lambeau. Arizona doesn't promise to be a great team this season, but mid-October is the best time to see a football game at Lambeau Field.

Oct. 20, Noon, Houston Texans, Lambeau Field, CBS

Average lowest-cost seat: $237

Range of lowest-cost seats: $207-$293

What is special about this game:  Again, a great time for football at Lambeau Field, and the matchup between the Packers' Jordan Love and Houston's C.J. Stroud should be a good one.

Oct. 27, Noon, Jacksonville Jaguars, EverBank Stadium, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $98

Range of lowest-cost seats: $80-$145

What is special about this game:  This year's bargain game. Jacksonville was 9-8 last season, the same as the Packers, but they didn't make the playoffs. This might be a game where Packers fans save their money to pay for three divisional road games after the bye week.

Nov. 3, 3:25 p.m., Detroit Lions, Lambeau Field, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $285

Range of lowest-cost seats: $235-$358

What is special about this game:  As with the Vikings, the Packers swapped road victories with the division-winning Lions in 2023, although Green Bay's Thanksgiving day victory in Detroit set the stage for its season-ending rush to the playoffs. The Packers defeated Super Bowl winning Kansas City the next week to prove the victory in Detroit was no fluke.

Nov. 17, Noon, Chicago Bears, Soldier Stadium, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $278

Range of lowest-cost seats: $226-$337

What is special about this game:  The Packers are riding a 10-game winning streak against the Bears and are 50-15 since Brett Favre was made the Green Bay starter in 1992. The Bears will trot out another quarterback meant to stem the tide, NFL No. 1 draft pick Caleb Williams, which explains why this is the third most expensive (non-Brazilian) game on the schedule.

Nov. 24, 3:25 p.m., San Francisco 49ers, Lambeau Field, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $271

Range of lowest-cost seats: $236-$327

What is special about this game:  This is a grudge match. San Francisco is 4-2 against the Packers since Matt LaFleur was named head coach. Three of those, all Packers losses, were playoff games. On the other hand, the Packers won four of the last five regular-season games against the 49ers.

Nov. 28, 7:20 p.m., (Thanksgiving), Miami Dolphins, Lambeau Field, NBC

Average lowest-cost seat: $179

Range of lowest-cost seats: $157-$207

What is special about this game:  This is the first of four consecutive prime time games for the Packers. Another matchup of good young quarterbacks but it's also during the hunting season and only four days after the San Francisco game, which probably explains the price.

Dec. 5, 7:15 p.m., Detroit Lions, Ford Field, Prime Video

Average lowest-cost seat: $245

Range of lowest-cost seats: $201-$311

What is special about this game:  The Packers won in Detroit on Thanksgiving in 2023. If they want to win the division, they might have to do that again. Detroit fans have been on a year-long high because of their team's resurgence, so this game might get more expensive.

Dec. 15, 7:20 p.m., Seattle Seahawks, Lumen Field, NBC

Average lowest-cost seat: $259

Range of lowest-cost seats: $207-$310

What is special about this game:  Seattle is another of the many 9-8 teams in 2023. The Packers and Seahawks had an intense rivalry for a while, but Green Bay won five of the last six games dating to 2015, which cooled things a bit. Not every team can get beat repeatedly and still claim a rivalry, re: the Bears.

Dec. 23, 7:15 p.m., New Orleans Saints, Lambeau Field, 7:15 p.m., ESPN

Average lowest-cost seat: $137

Range of lowest-cost seats: $112-$158

What is special about this game:  The Saints also were 9-8 last year, and have the great good luck to be the only team traveling to Lambeau Field in December, where Matt Fleur is 16-1 during that month.

Dec. 29, Noon, Minnesota Vikings, U.S. Bank Stadium, FOX

Average lowest-cost seat: $142

Range of lowest-cost seats: $113-$228

What is special about this game:  The price of this game likely reflects the uncertainty of Vikings fans over the coming year. They replaced quarterback Kirk Cousins, now in Atlanta, with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy, which leaves a lot of unanswered questions, despite the talent surrounding him. This is another game where the price could increase if the Vikings are playing well, and if the Packers need to win this game to make the playoffs.

Chicago Bears, Lambeau Field, Jan. 4 or 5, time and network to be determined

Average lowest-cost seat: $207

Range of lowest-cost seats: $180-$275

What is special about this game:  Packers-Bears is usually enough, but these teams played the final game last season, a must-win for Green Bay to make the playoffs. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams will have an entire season under his belt by this game, so it could be one worth seeing.
