Inside the Coronation Street set tour - with soap secrets and strict rules on touching windows

Tours of the Coronation Street set have resumed for the first time in two years - the M.E.N's Dianne Bourne headed along to see what you can and can't do on those famous cobbles

I’m standing with a crowd of excited fans about to head into Manchester's real-life Coronation Street set on the official tour of the ITV soap. But before we are allowed to set foot on to the famous street, our tour guide is taking us through some important ground rules.

“No stilettos have we?" She says, peering at all of our footwear choices. "Because you might struggle on the cobbles, we had a lady had to be helped off them when she arrived in sky-high heels last week," she laughs.

And that's not the only thing we are all warned about. Our guide swiftly informs us: "Continuity is really important as this is a working set, so no writing any rude messages in the dust on the windows or on the cars - because believe me we’ve had that before now as well.”

Read more : "I'm a Corrie superfan and I travel for hours to thank the soap's stars"

This is life on the Coronation Street official public tour - which has just reopened to fans for the first time in two years after the easing of lockdown restrictions. Fans can now book on a series of weekend dates to visit the real-life setting for the world's longest-running soap.

And while you're not allowed to put your mucky paw prints on the windows, you can certainly get up close and personal with all the fascinating features of this most famous faux terraced street. You can even peer inside the letter boxes if you fancy.

how much coronation street tour

Indeed, doing just that reveals one of the many secrets of the soap. For while you will see wallpaper on the immediate wall through the postbox, if you peep a little further you'll see pretty much empty rooms, save the occasional chair or prop.

As you learn on the tour, the majority of the Coronation Street set here at Trafford Wharf Road in Manchester is in fact a facade. That means only the exteriors (and hallways) of the properties and shops here are used for the real-life filming for the TV show.

However, as fans also learn, there are THREE units on this set that have fully-operational interiors. They are the Prima Doner kebab shop, Preston's Petals selling the street's blooms, and the Victoria Street Community Centre a little further up the set.

If you look inside the windows of these three shops, you'll be able to see exactly the same interiors that you see on screen three times a week on the ITV soap. And peek plenty of people do - the doner kebab shop is a particular favourite with fans and it's good to see the 5 Star hygiene rating so proudly displayed in the window!

how much coronation street tour

The set we get to walk around today, on the Trafford side of the MediaCityUK developments, is actually the fourth version of Coronation Street created since the show first aired back in 1960, all the idea of Salford's very own Tony Warren. Back then, of course, the famous cobbles were painted on to an entirely indoor set at Manchester's legendary Granada Studios.

In 1982 the first almost full-sized exterior was created in the backlot of Granada's studios in Manchester city centre. But back in 2011 ITV bosses made the historic decision to start building a huge new site for Coronation Street - moving lock, stock and barrel to Trafford Wharf Road in Trafford Park.

The outdoor set that fans can now visit was painstakingly recreated from the original to cater for the rigours of modern filming, and first welcomed its famous cast and crew in 2013 . And, as our tour guide informs us, it is now the largest static lot production in the whole world.

During the tour we are reminded of many of the famous storylines that have taken place on Corrie over the years - including the tram crash that killed Molly Dobbs and Ashley Peacock back in 2010. We are reminded of hairdresser Maxine Peacock's grisly demise at the hands of serial killer Richard Hillman - and the bench that still remains in her memory outside Audrey's Salon opposite the Rovers Return.

how much coronation street tour

You can poke around The Kabin, and if you're anything like me, be rather aghast at the very dated, faded array of goods on display there. There's also the famous paper boy model that cheeky Norris Cole reckoned contained a secret before he passed away.

Naturally, it's the Rovers that remains the most popular spot on the street for fans to get a photo. The most famous pub in the world, as we are reminded by our tour guide.

You can get as many of your own photos as you like while on the tour, but at the Rovers there's also an "official tour photographer" capturing an image of you and whoever you're with. We rather regretted on relying on this for our mum-and-son image on our tour, as when we arrived at the gift shop at the end it turned out the technology had conked out that morning and our picture wasn't available.

I'm sure that was just an opening glitch, and for those who do want to purchase a souvenir photo, prices start from £10 in the gift shop. There's also the likes of Corrie biscuits (£4.95), fudge (£2), jam (£2.95), magnets (£2.50), and some rather fabulous leopard print mugs emblazoned with one of Bet Gilroy's most famous quotes: "This isn't a smile, it's a lid on a scream."

how much coronation street tour

Or, you can snap up one dedicated to the soap's iconic Ken Barlow for £12. His famous quote? "I happen to think that I'm a great guy".

For those hoping to bump into an actual Coronation Street star while on the set visit, I'm afraid that's highly unlikely to happen. The tours are only booked on days when filming isn't taking place on the set, so the only chance you've got of seeing a famous face is if they happen to be at the studios to pick up a forgotten lunchbox or whatever.

You do, however, get to find out plenty of little soap secrets - and, new for the return of the tour in 2022 are some of the latest shops and additions to the street, like the Shuttleworth funeral parlour on Victoria Street and the new EE shop (replacing the former Costa coffee shop). I did try and badger out of the guides where the exciting new addition to the set is going to be - the new shopping mall - but everyone's lips were sealed.

how much coronation street tour

But you do get to discover where the Weatherfield Police Station is hidden away, and whether the cars are "real" or not on the street. And, in case you're wondering, all the number plates are registered to Coronation Street.

And, as for the random doorways we stroll past on our visit? Well apparently they're secreted about the set to be used as the doorsteps of characters that occasionally crop up - even if they supposedly live 30 miles away from Weatherfield.

How much are tickets?

Tickets (including booking fee) cost £35 per person and £32.50 for under 8s, while carers go free. Tickets are available to purchase now at www.coronationstreettour.co.uk .

Is it worth it?

If you're a massive fan of Coronation Street, it's worth every penny, pretty much - particularly if you never been on previous tours or to the old Granada Studios.

You can take as many photos of you like of all the exterior sets, and heck, even play act your own scene at a favourite spot (like outside Underworld) if you fancy.

However, I went with my six-year-old son George who is obviously a little too young to appreciate Corrie just yet. And, aside from enjoying peeking in the letterboxes, he was dragging his feet and moaning: "Can we go home now?" from about 15 minutes into the tour.

It also does work out quite expensive if you're planning on taking children along, as it's only discounted for under-8s, and even that is a pricey £32.50 compared to the adult £35.

So my advice would be to make sure you're going with people who have a similar passion for Corrie as you do.

And be prepared for all eventualities with the weather - as the tour is ALL outdoors on the Trafford Wharf Road site. It takes around 90 minutes so comfy shoes are a must.

When can you go?

General public tours on the Corrie set are operating during daytime hours on select Saturdays, Sundays and occasional Bank Holidays.

The dates currently released are for Saturday 2nd April 2022, Sunday 3rd April 2022, Saturday 9th April 2022, Sunday 10th April 2022, Saturday 16th April 2022, Sunday 17th April 2022, Saturday 23rd April 2022, Sunday 24th April 2022, Saturday 30th April 2022, Sunday 1st May 2022 & Monday 2nd May 2022.

Tour bosses say more dates for Summer will be "announced soon".

The rapidly-approaching coronation of King Charles could cost an eye-popping amount while also bringing benefits to the U.K. economy.

The British monarch’s crowning has had varying costs attributed to it leading up to the widely-anticipated event scheduled for Saturday morning. In some reports, it has been projected the cost will come out to $125 million (£100 million), while others have pegged it lower, around $60 million (£50 million).

Many outlets credited security as factoring into the estimated price-tag . Some U.K. residents have bemoaned the estimated costs, pointing to the cost of living crisis.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport told FOX Business that for national state occasions, the U.K. government provides money. The coronation cost was not provided ahead of the event, something typical for such festivities.

TICKETMASTER FACES ROYAL CONTROVERSY OVER CORONATION CONCERT

FOX Business also reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.

The famed Westminster Abbey will host the coronation, during which Charles will don the 22-carat gold, precious jewel-encrusted St. Edward’s Crown and Camilla will wear the 2,000-diamond Queen Mary’s Crown. Other regalia, including the Imperial State Crown, Sovereign Scepter, Sovereign’s Orb and Coronation Spoon will appear.

The abbey will also have over 120 flower varieties provided by the non-profit Flowers from the Farm.

Buckingham Palace has said that Charles will wear vestments that were featured in prior coronations, and that he and his wife will sit at certain points in historic Chairs of Estate and Throne Chairs made for previous such occasions.

Before and after the ceremony, processions will take place, with the Gold State Coach that sports gold leaf, painted panels and sculptures expected to carry Charles and Camilla in the latter one. They will use the Diamond Jubilee State Coach for the pre-coronation journey from Buckingham Palace.

Compared to that of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, the king’s coronation is expected to have 75 % fewer guests on the list and run less time. Some 2,000 guests have received invites , including Prince Harry and first lady Jill Biden.

KING CHARLES III'S CORONATION BOOSTS UK TOURISM AS REGION STILL RECOVERING FROM LOCKDOWNS

With the event itself taking place Saturday, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will have a bank holiday Monday in honor of it, according to the U.K. government. That means many businesses will have their doors closed for that day.

Reuters reported that a spokesperson for the palace highlighted projections of the economy seeing over $1.25 billion in benefit from the coronation and noted it provided important opportunities for leaders to get together.

"It’s not for me to say how accurate those figures are but certainly the theory pertains that the celebrations are an enormous economic boost to the nation," the spokesperson told Reuters.

VisitEngland said last week that the U.K. economy would see a $1.5 billion (£1.2 billion) lift, a figure the tourism agency attributed to some 4 million U.K. citizens having domestic trips planned for the coronation weekend.

In England and Wales, drinking establishments and clubs will get two hours more than normal to operate from May 5 to May 7, according to a licensing hours order passed for the coronation. Those extra hours, the Center for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) projected, could net $130 million (£104 million).

QUEEN ELIZABETH II, BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY'S NET WORTH

With tourists from all over the world, some $293 million (£233 million) could also be brought in, according to Cebr .

The coronation will come nearly eight months after the passing of Queen Elizabeth , whose reign lasted seven decades, at her Balmoral estate in Scotland back in September. It is the first since 1953.

Twilight is going on UK tour with a live orchestra – here's how to get tickets today

You better hold on tight spider monkeys because Twilight in concert is coming to London this October. Here’s how you can get tickets to see Bella and Edward’s first outing, accompanied by a live orchestra.

About three things we are absolutely positive. First, Edward is a vampire. Second, he'll be returning to UK screens this autumn for a live concert of Twilight. And third, we're unconditionally and irrevocably, in love with this idea.

This October, Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight is celebrating its 16th anniversary with a touring production of the on-screen film accompanied by a live ensemble of rock and orchestral musicians.

The YA classic will be shown on the big screen at seven different cities throughout the UK while a 12-piece orchestra performs the film’s music live on stage.

Played by an ensemble of rock and orchestra musicians, fans of the film will get to hear live renditions of Carter Burwell’s original score as well as iconic hits from the soundtrack like Full Moon and Supermassive Black Hole.

In fact we would say that it’s the hard-hitting indie songs, as well as the blue-washed lenses, that make this first film so memorable. First coming onto screens in 2008, the film stars Kristen Stewart as our own personal brand of heroine, Bella Swan, and Robert Pattinson as vampire Edward.

More like this

We'd be shocked if you aren't familiar with this classic love story, but just in case, here's what you need to know: The quiet and reserved Bella Swan moves to the small and rainy town of Forks, Washington to live with her dad, and soon comes across the mysterious Edward Cullen and his very pale family. As more strange incidents occur, Bella falls in love with Edward at the same time she discovers he’s a vampire.

Dramatic, romantic and iconic, Twilight is a film for the ages. Here’s how you can get tickets to see the film in concert this autumn.

Coronation Street tragedy as Roy Cropper left to die in devastating prison collapse

Roy is found collapsed in his cell in Corrie

It all becomes too much for Roy Cropper ( David Neilson ) in Coronation Street next week as he collapses in his cell.

Roy is currently behind bars for Lauren Bolton ’s ( Cait Fitton ) murder. His friends and family are in the stressful position of trying to find a shred of evidence that proves he is innocent, fully aware that if time runs out, he could spend the rest of his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

When Roy calls the cafe hoping to speak with Nina ( Mollie Gallagher ) in upcoming episodes, Shona (Julia Goulding) passes the phone to Carla (Alison King) but she hangs up, pretending it was a dodgy line.

Back in his cell, Roy has another flashback of Lauren. This time, she is seen approaching the counter in the cafe, and Roy notices there’s something odd about her clothes.

Nina waits for Roy in the prison visiting room in Corrie

Roy’s chain of thought is lost due to a prison officer banging on the door. Back in Weatherfield, Bobby (Jack Crawford) tells Carla he reckons Roy must’ve kept quiet about the false statement.

In the prison visiting room, Nina explains to the prison officer that she’s waiting for Roy.

But just as the officer lets himself into Roy’s cell, he finds him collapsed on the floor.

Later in the week, Mary (Patti Clare) visits Roy in hospital.

When he reveals that he keeps trying to remember the details of a conversation he overheard between Lauren and Max (Paddy Bever), Mary urges him not to give up – if it’s of significance, it’ll come to him eventually.

During Roy’s latest meeting with Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown), he updates her about Lauren’s necklace. Roy suggests that if they can trace where it is from, they might be able to track her mystery boyfriend.

It’s a good lead – but will it be enough?

A scroll for the king, a website for the people: Coronation document to be released digitally

The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — It is a record fit for a king, but it’s going online for everyone to see.

King Charles III gaped at the 70-foot-long (21.4-meter) hand-lettered scroll as it was presented to him earlier this week at Buckingham Palace, thanking the artisans who produced the document that serves as the official record of his coronation almost a year ago.

Known as the Coronation Roll, the document is the latest edition in a tradition that stretches back to the coronation of Edward II in 1308. But for the first time ever, a digital version of Charles’ scroll will be available to view online beginning Friday.

“Thank you very much,’’ Charles told heraldic artist Tim Noad and calligrapher Stephanie Gill, who worked on the project for 56 days straight. “I cannot tell you how grateful I am.”

The scroll, which consists of 56 pages stitched together by hand and contains about 11,600 words, is the first to be printed on paper, rather than vellum, reflecting the king’s views on animal welfare. Vellum, made from animal skins, was long prized for manuscripts because of its texture and durability.

The document gives a detailed description of the coronation ceremony on May 6, 2023, from the procession into Westminster Abbey, to the anointing and crowning of the king, as well as a list of all those who took part and the official guests.

The online presentation includes a video and photos from the event, together with interviews with some of the participants, such as Penny Mordaunt, who as lord president of the Privy Council held the sword of state throughout much of the two-hour ceremony.

The physical scroll will be stored at the National Archives, alongside the 17 historic Coronation Rolls that have survived.

“Originally, they captured who came, what claims they had to perform at the service at the coronation; this is all part of establishing that relationship between the King and the leading subjects,’’ said Sean Cunningham, head of medieval records at the National Archives. “So the new roll is kind of the final version of this, in that it takes elements of those earlier allegiances, oaths and homages and incorporates a kind of narrative story of what happened on the day.”

When the document was unrolled for the king to inspect on Wednesday, Queen Camilla peered at it and said: “Goodness me, I won’t attempt to read it without my specs.”

Charles, who noted that past rolls were written in Latin and French, replied: “At least it’s in English.”

Professor T's season-3 ending finally solves show's biggest mystery

Jasper finally learns the truth about his father's death.

preview for Ben Miller's Professor T trailer (ITV/PBS)

Professor T season-3 finale spoilers follow.

Who killed Jasper's father in Professor T?

What happens to adelaide after she reveals the truth about jasper's father's death.

What happened to Jasper's (Ben Miller) father has been a question that has long plagued fans of Professor T almost as much as it has troubled the enigmatic criminology lecturer himself.

Since that dramatic season-one finale it has been teased that Jasper either killed his abusive father or that he may have been otherwise involved in his not-so-sweet papa's death.

After years of being subjected to his father's cruelty, Jasper's patchy, fragmented memories hint that he may have acted impulsively to protect his mother, Adelaide (Frances de la Tour).

"He has these really strange visions of being a child and holding a shotgun to his father's chest," Miller told The One Show .

Avid fans will know that this moment occurred at a younger Jasper's seventh birthday celebrations, during which his father turned violent against Adelaide.

Jasper's initial attempt to defend Adelaide failed and he was pushed away by his father which led to him taking up the gun.

Jasper's involvement in the season-one finale, present-day case – where a young man confessed to killing his own father – triggered the memory of his own gun-wielding incident during which his father urged Jasper to "pull the trigger!"

A gunshot sounded but it was unclear whether or not it was from the present-day Jasper, who had lifted a gun off his mantlepiece, or seven-year-old Jasper, fresh from shooting his father.

This flashback certainly doesn't align neatly with that of his father hanging dead from the ceiling – a supposed suicide. The lack of clarity surrounding this event has formed the basis of this three-season-long mystery.

Finally, Professor T 's season-three finale puts an end to all the speculation in answering that burning question. Was Jasper responsible for his father's death?

ben miller as jasper tempest in professor t

Did Jasper kill his father in Professor T?

The answer is revealed when Jasper begins probing into the reason behind Adelaide's recent injury.

Her fall down the stairs leading towards the attic has caused him to wonder what she was up there looking for.

He enlists the help of his reluctant therapist Dr Helena Goldberg (Juliet Stevenson).

After some gentle persuading Helen relents to enter the attic on his behalf and rummage for clues.

Helena very quickly discovers some diaries belonging to Adelaide and a damaged trophy of Jasper's, tinged with dried blood.

Despite bringing them down from the attic for Jasper to have a look at, neither one of their codes of ethics will allow them in good conscience to breach Adelaide's trust by reading her diaries.

The trophy, however, does trigger the memory of his seventh birthday and the image of his father's feet swaying in mid air.

Jasper is then able to recall the voice of a male. No more comes of it but Helena can't let the smear of old blood go and so obtains his father's autopsy report.

juliet stevenson, professor t, season 3

After contacting the coroner who filed the report Helena learns that the bruising around Jasper's father's neck, caused from the hanging, may have occurred after his death. The fatal head injury, however, that "was apparently suffered when the rope was cut and his body fell," may not have occurred from the fall.

No police investigation was carried out at the time because that same coroner was influenced by an eyewitness – Adelaide's very good friend and respected professor of criminology Wilfred Hamilton (Douglas Reith).

The pieces begin to whir into place and Jasper deduces that the voice he heard in the cellar that day was Wilfred's. Filled with emotion, Jasper heads straight to the hospital to speak to Adelaide.

When he arrives, an agitated Jasper finds Wilfred there waiting for Adelaide to return from physio. He confronts Wilfred about being present at his father's death and bluntly asks, "Did you kill my father?" Before accusing him of the murder and covering it up.

Adelaide returns ready to tell him the truth. It is then, during their chat, that Jasper discovers he did not kill his father and that his memories hadn't been entirely complete, but if not him then who?

douglas reith, professor t, season 3

Adelaide admits to Jasper that she was the one who killed his father.

Explaining the truth of that night she proceeds to tell him: "Your father loved you Jasper, but he had problems."

She shares how his drunk father had hit her and held Jasper up by the throat after he'd attempted to come to her rescue.

Fearing that he would kill Jasper, Adelaide panicked and hit him with the trophy, delivering the fatal blow. While the young Jasper ran to the cellar, Adelaide called Wilfred who helped her cover up the murder as a suicide.

Jasper still can't recall any of the details and becomes distressed by the fact that, in all these years, his mother did not confess to him.

"My whole life, I've been blaming myself. He did it because he was ashamed of me because I was not worth living for," he tells Adelaide which leads to a devastating exchange between mother and son.

Jasper calls her a narcissist, implying that she kept the truth from him, not for his well being, but for herself.

Adelaide killed Jasper's father and so, with that knowledge, the law-abiding Jasper is compelled to inform the police.

Helena attempts to dissuade him as he makes the call but he tells her, "If I do not tell the truth, I do not know who I am."

Thankfully, it doesn't take much persuasion for him to be convinced to listen to Helena's advice and he hangs up the phone, shortly before breaking down into his handkerchief.

His tears are a manifestation of his breakthrough as a beaming Jasper admits, "I did not know I could do that."

He goes back to see Adelaide who is ready to take the burden off Jasper and confess to the police but there is no need, he has decided against reporting her.

She smiles and puts her hand on his own latex-bound hand when Jasper does the most remarkable thing. He takes off his glove and touches his mother's hand, bare skin to bare skin.

It truly is a special moment, one he marks by commenting: "This is not unpleasant."
