The Symmetry Series is made out of polycarbonate and synthetic rubber, with raised edges to protect your iPhone’s screen. The case is also compatible with wireless charging. Razer Arctech Pro

2. Razer Arctech Pro for iPhone 12

The Razer Arctech Pro for iPhone 12 is an attractive yet protective case that combines a number of different technologies. First, there’s an anti-bacterial coating for a case that's also drop-certified with Thermaphene cooling technology to help dissipate any heat your iPhone generates. That keeps you in the clear from overheating, as well as ensures your phone stays cool so it's comfortable to hold in one hand.

The Razer Arctech Pro’s reinforced side panels strengthen the case all while working with your iPhone 12 to ensure there's nothing impeding your phone's 5G connectivity. Plus, for Razer fans, the case is emblazoned with the brand's familiar black and green logo.

incipio slim

3. Incipio Slim for iPhone 12

Sometimes, slim protection is all you need. Incipio's lightweight Slim Case for iPhone 12 features a raised-edge bezel to protect your screen while offering up to 14 feet of drop protection.

The Slim is both scratch and discoloration resistant, and still thin enough to allow you to wirelessly charge your iPhone 12. The case’s antimicrobial surface claims to eliminate 99.9% of surface bacteria and germs as well, so you get added protection against the perils of everyday touching. Just maybe wash your hands after taking your phone into the bathroom.

There’s a clear version of the Slim Case, but if you want to show off your iPhone 12’s style, even the three color options — purple, blue and black — are translucent.

Bandolier Emma Pebble

4. Bandolier Emma Pebble Leather Crossbody Bandolier for iPhone 12

Sometimes, the best phone cases do more than just tote around your handset — they’re great multitaskers. The Bandolier Emma Pebble Leather Crossbody case is crafted from classic leather with gold-tone details. It features a special crossbody strap that includes a snapback cover for easy access to your iPhone.

With the strap and bandolier-style design, this accessory essentially transforms a typical case into a small purse that's perfect for holding essentials like credit cards or receipts. It also looks great paired with a formal or casual outfit. No bag? No problem.

Catalyst Vibe

5. Catalyst Vibe Series for iPhone 12

The Catalyst Vibe Series for iPhone 12 is a serious contender when it comes to making sure your new phone is protected. This case comes packing a drop rating of 10 feet, and it's also customizable in a variety of ways.

Catalyst's four-point attachment system lets you strap, hang your phone, or clip the case onto whatever you wish. It also includes a lanyard attachment to make it even easier to carry. There's a mute switch that's simple to handle with a gloved hand too, which makes it a great choice for workers who spend a lot of time outside or in construction areas. Best of all, the Vibe Series is compatible with wireless charging so you can keep your iPhone topped off at all times.

Pelican Protector

6. Pelican Protector Series for iPhone 12

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Sometimes, utilitarian protection that's low-profile but dependable is exactly what you're looking for in an iPhone 12 case. If you want a tough exterior with 15-foot drop protection and added defense against germs with Micropel protection, the Pelican Protector is an excellent option all-around.

Because the Pelican Protector is dual-layered, you can feel confident that your new iPhone 12 will be safe, even if it clatters to the ground for the third or fourth time that day. A lifetime guarantee means you can always get a new case if something happens to the first one.

Mujjo full leather wallet

7. Mujjo Full Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 12

Mujjo's attractive full leather wallet case for iPhone 12 transforms your phone into a functional wallet. Not only does it protect your phone with style thanks to a vegetable-tanned leather exterior that ages over time to add its own patina.

There’s also the attached pouch on Mujjo’s case, which offers a simple way to carry all your essentials when you leave the house. The business-like air of this case makes it appropriate for using during fancy functions or just sliding in your pocket on your way to work. And at $44, it’s relatively affordable while making it look like you paid a lot more for your iPhone 12 accessory.

Smartish Kung Fu Grip case

8. Smartish Gripmunk case for iPhone 12

We've all dropped our phones once or twice (or more, but who’s counting?). The Gripmunk case for iPhone 12 seeks to make sure you can get the best hold on your phone as is possible.

With a "super grippy" texture, this case is made to stay in your hands as long as possible. It features textured sides, a sleek design, and a bezel around the front to keep your phone's screen from touching any potentially compromising surfaces. But most importantly, the Smartish Gripmunk case is so low-profile, you may just forget it's there.

Case-Mate Soap Bubble

9. Case-Mate Soap Bubble for iPhone 12

Are you just not into the generic solid-colored phone cases that dominate retail outlets? Or are you on the lookout for something a little more unique? Case-Mate's Soap Bubble iPhone 12 case is the cure for the common case.

This lightweight case has an eye-catching iridescent swirl effect as well as 10-foot drop protection and MicroPel antimicrobial protection. The case in its entirety also fends off scratches and dings, so while you're enveloping your new phone in some seriously cool-looking designs, you can rest assured that your iPhone 12 will be in good hands. Plus, Case-Mate offers a lifetime warranty to cover any potential issues.

Totallee super thin case

10. Totallee Super Thin iPhone 12 case

The Totallee Super Thin iPhone 12 case targets people who want to feel as though they're using nothing at all. The ultra-thin case features no branding, logos, or designs, and it's nearly weightless.

Totallee’s case fits snugly around your phone, with a raised lip around the camera. It works well with wireless charging to ensure you can connect your iPhone 12 to a charger and walk off for a bit. If you're someone who wants something low-profile but still extremely protective, you may soon find yourself a loyal Totallee customer.

Nomad Rugged case for iPhone 12

11. Nomad Rugged Case

If you don't mind the heavy weight, Nomad's Rugged case will offer your iPhone a sophisticated air while keeping it safe from harm.

The former is achieved by the leather back, which comes in three different colors and ages beautifully as you handle it. Meanwhile TPE sides and lips make sure the front of the phone won't be in danger of scratching, and polycarbonate inner layer protects the iPhone from the shock of a drop. Apparently this case will keep your iPhone intact after a 10-foot drop, so says Nomad.

Native Union Clic Canvas

12. Native Union Clic Canvas

Combine the premium feel of a fabric case with the practicality of a plastic one with the Native Union Clic Canvas case. With raised edges, your display and rear cameras are safe from whatever surfaces you lay your phone on, while the textile portion gives an excellent feel to the case and a unique look.

This case is a practical choice too. It works with MagSafe accessories, adds little weight to the total mass of your phone, and the flexible materials mean it's easy to take on and off.

15:12 cork case

13. 15:21 Cork Case

You can wrap your iPhone with the same stuff you find on pinboards or on the top of wine bottles with this case. Other than feeling unlike any other case you're likely to handle, it's also biodegradable so you needn't feel guilty about disposing of it when it's past its best.

Unfortunately that soft case means it won't be as durable as many of the other options on our list, and therefore won't prevent as much damage to your iPhone. Fortunately 1521 have added a raised lip around the display so you can at least avoid the everyday scratches that can be caused by leaving your phone screen-side down.

Apple silicone case for iPhone 12 in Cantaloupe

14. Apple Silicone Case

Of all the cases produced by Apple itself, this silicone model is our favorite. It blends tactility with protection excellently, and comes in an impressive 15 colors, which should be plenty of choice for even the pickiest iPhone 12 owner.

On the inside of the case, Apple's installed a soft microfiber layer to cradle the phone, and also MagSafe-compatible magnets. That helps ensure any MagSafe accessories you may have still align themselves perfectly, just as Apple intended.

How to choose the best iPhone 12 case for you

When choosing the best iPhone 12 case, protecting your device should be at the front of your mind. You should always consider the kind of material your case is crafted out of, as well as its drop rating for those unplanned spills. The higher the drop rating, the better chances your phone will be protected if it falls to the pavement. If you're more worried about how your phone looks and prefer fun designs to heavy-duty materials, you can make do with lesser drop ratings, thinner phone cases, and even skins instead of cases if you want to skip them entirely.

Phone cases can and do vary in price. However, the amount of money you spend on a case is not directly related to its quality. You'll have to make the decision whether a case is worth purchasing to you personally. This applies to cases with awesome designs or those that are completely shockproof with high drop ratings. In the end, you need to figure out how much each of these cases is personally valuable, price aside.

One important aspect of the iPhone 12 is that you can use the same case you buy for that phone to house iPhone 12 Pro, as the phones are the same size. That way you can simply change out one case for another if you decide to upgrade or pick a different model in the future. You won’t be able to use these cases on an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max, as those are different dimensions.

If you opt for a transparent case, remember that you will need to keep it clean to stop it from 'yellowing'. Check out how to clean a clear phone case for guidance.

Are iPhone 12 cases worth it?

If you're a careful user who can guarantee you'll never drop your phone, then maybe a case is only worth it if you really like the design. For most people though, a case for the iPhone 12 is a cheap way to reduce or eliminate possible damage to your phone. Particularly when you account for possible repair costs.

What's the toughest iPhone 12 case?

Of our options here, the carbon-fiber Catalyst Vibe is the toughest case we can recommend. If that's not quite right for you, then we also like the Pelican Protector for its tough plastic shell.

Are iPhone 12 MagSafe cases worth it?

In short, they're certainly not necessary. The iPhone 12 series introduced MagSafe to the iPhone, which is a combination of fast wireless charger and magnetic aligning ring in the back of the phone. Unless your case is particularly thick, the magnets on your iPhone should still be effective, meaning additional magnets in the case won't be needed most of the time.

Of course, if you don't plan to use any MagSafe accessories, like a wireless charger or wallet, then you certainly don't need MagSafe in your case.

Will the iPhone 12 Pro fit an iPhone 12 case?

You'll have to look at our best iPhone 12 Pro cases page if you've got the iPhone 12 Pro. Its larger camera block, plus some other small body differences, mean it won't fit in an iPhone 12 case.

If you've decided to stick with your trusty iPhone 12 instead of upgrading to the iPhone 14 (or maybe you snagged one for a good price)—great! It's still a nice smartphone that'll last you several years. But slapping a brand-new case on your handset can make it feel fresh. It's also smart to use a case to protect your fragile investment. I've tested more than 50 cases and accessories—ones that are MagSafe compatible and ones that aren't. These are our favorites.

Be sure to check out our other buying guides, like the Best MagSafe Accessories , Best iPhone , Best iPad Accessories , the Best iPhone 14 Deals , and the Best iPhone 14 Cases .

What Is MagSafe?

Some of the cases in our guide are not MagSafe compatible . You might remember the term from the magnetic charging cable on MacBooks of old. Apple has revived the name as a system of magnetic accessories. You can slap items like a wallet or wireless charger on the back of all the iPhone 12 (and forward) models. Apple says its magnet accessories are shielded, so it's safe to use with credit cards (if maybe not hotel key cards).

There are tons of MagSafe accessories now available, and we've rounded up our favorites here , from wallets and wireless chargers to tripods and bike mounts. An easy way to tell a MagSafe case apart from a regular case is to look for a ring of magnets on the inside of it in product images. Brands will also usually indicate whether a case is MagSafe in the product name or description.

If a case or accessory supports MagSafe in this guide, you'll see “MagSafe" somewhere in the product description. Some companies also claim MagSafe compatibility even if their cases don't have magnets. That's because the cases may be thin enough to support other magnetic accessories, but the magnetic connection may be weaker than you'd want. If you buy a case or accessory from another manufacturer, check their website for similar language.

The Official MagSafe Case

Apple's standard silicone case is its best ever. The bottom edge of the phone is fully covered, with tiny cutouts for the charging port and speakers, and the whole thing feels wonderfully soft. The inner microfiber lining ensures that the back of your phone never gets a scratch. Additionally, the edges on the front are raised to offer some protection to the screen if it falls face down. The buttons are easy to press too. This is a MagSafe case, so there's a ring of magnets in the center that securely attaches to other MagSafe accessories, like Apple's wireless MagSafe Charger and Wallet .

I've also tested and like Apple's leather cases ($59) . They hold up well over time and don't attract dust and lint, a problem on the silicone case.

A Good Cheap Case

This case from Spigen is simple, but it includes magnets, so it works with official MagSafe accessories like Apple's Charger and Wallet. You get good protection for very little money. It's made of thermoplastic polyurethane, with a texture on the back that feels nice to the touch. The buttons are clicky, it has a slim profile, and the bumper is sturdy. If you want a clear version to show off your iPhone's color, I'd recommend Spigen's Ultra Hybrid Mag cases .

The Prettiest Cases

If you want to inject a bit of personality into your case, there's no better place to go than Sonix. It has a variety of styles, from glow-in-the-dark to colorful and reflective designs. Better yet, there's MagSafe support. (Sonix also has non-MagSafe versions .) They have a tough bumper, clicky buttons, and raised edges. The plastic they're made out of is also infused with an antimicrobial agent to keep certain types of bacteria at bay.

Sonix also has a nifty MagSafe adjustable stand ($50) that lets you elevate your phone on your desk or nightstand. The phone stays secure via magnets, though the base could be heavier and grippier, as it can slide around. You can attach Apple's MagSafe charger or Sonix's very own to the back to turn it into a charging dock.

★ A fashionable case : I think Sonix's cases look nicer, but Incipio's Kate Spade collaboration ($55) is worth looking at, especially if you're a fan of the brand. It supports MagSafe, has raised lips, and the whole thing is quite grippy.

The Thinnest Case Around

If you despise cases but know you need one, try Totallee. In no way should you expect its cases to protect your phone from a 6-foot drop—they're so thin, it barely feels like anything's there—but they'll eliminate everyday scuff marks. You can choose between matte or transparent. The former is made of flexible plastic and is the thinnest version, and the latter is constructed out of thermoplastic polyurethane, so it will fare slightly better when dropped. There's no branding anywhere, which is a nice change of pace. The sheer thinness of these cases means they work decently well with both the MagSafe Charger and Wallet.

A Sustainable Case

Lifeproof's Wake is made from more than 85 percent ocean-based recycled plastic. It's the way to go if sustainability is a priority for you. The edges are tough and rounded, so if you don't like the flat-edge design on the new iPhones, this will help. The buttons are very clicky (I like the colored accents), and the mute switch is easily accessible. The back has a wavy pattern that looks nice, and it keeps Apple's MagSafe Charger attached (but not the MagSafe Wallet). With every purchase, Lifeproof donates a dollar to a water-conscious nonprofit of your choosing.

Nomad screen protector with iphone

A Screen Protector

It's very easy to install Nomad's screen protector. Clean the iPhone screen with the included wet wipe, dry it with the microfiber cloth, and use the stickers to remove any lingering dust. Then place the alignment tool over your iPhone, remove the backing from the tempered glass protector, and plop it in place! I had a perfect alignment in seconds. Just make sure to press down from the middle and push out to eliminate as many air bubbles as possible.

For Leather Fans

I like sleek and simple leather cases, so this one from Nomad is up my alley. It supports MagSafe, has a polycarbonate body with a thermoplastic elastomer bumper that's slightly raised along the edges, and the inside is lined with microfiber to protect the back of your iPhone. The supple leather is from a long-running tannery in Chicago (Horween), and the bottom has two spots where you can attach a lanyard or wrist strap. Nomad also has non-MagSafe versions for a little less.

★ Another leather case: The vegetable-tanned leather in Mujjo's case ($50) is just as soft as Nomad's, but it has a slimmer profile. The Nomad case will fare better in a major drop, but Mujjo's should survive minor bumps. It doesn't support MagSafe, but it works decently with the MagSafe Charger.

A Great Case From a Black-Owned Business

Pivet is a Black-owned business, which is a rarity in the tech space. I tested and like its Aspect Clear case, but it's also available in a few colors. The buttons are a little stiff, but the company says it's updating the case to fix this. It doesn't work too well with MagSafe gear, but the bumper is sturdy, and it's well-built. It's recyclable, but if that option isn't available, it's made of nontoxic plastic the company claims will biodegrade in landfills or the ocean. We have a deeper dive into the company's claims that you can read here .

A PopSocket Case

If you want your PopSocket attached to a case, go with this combo from Otterbox. There are a wide variety of designs, and if you ever get bored with a look, you can swap out the PopTop whenever you want. It won't work with any MagSafe accessories, but you can still wirelessly recharge the phone. The charging speed is very slow though, so make sure to remove the PopTop for best results.

A Recycled Alternative

This is another great clear option to show off the iPhone 12's colors. It doesn't add much heft, and it has raised edges on the front and a scratch-resistant coating on the back. Best of all, it's made from old CDs and DVDs! The packaging is plastic-free and recyclable too. You'll get a free shipping label with your purchase to ship your old CDs to Nimble for 15 percent off your next order . Nimble says the case is certified for 6-foot drops and has "permanent antimicrobial protection" to block bacteria that cause stains and odors. (It will not protect you from viruses like Covid-19 .)

Apple's MagSafe wireless charger stays on the back of this case (though it can be dislodged fairly easily). The MagSafe Wallet falls off easily, too.

For Ultimate Protection

I hate ultra-thick cases, especially ones that need to be taken apart just to insert the phone. But if you need the most protection possible, the Defender Pro from OtterBox will do the trick. To use it, you need to remove the rubber slipcover, peel apart the polycarbonate shell, and layer the two pieces at the top and bottom of your iPhone. Then snap them shut, wrangle the slipcover back over, and you're done (whew).

If you frequently take your iPhone out of its case, this will be a pain. But it protects the charging port and mute switch, and it's so thick I have a hard time seeing it fail to protect your device. Just know that there's no cover for the screen with this version, but the front has raised lips, and you do get a holster to clip it to your belt. The case also renders MagSafe completely useless, but wireless charging still works!

Image may contain Electronics Phone Cell Phone and Mobile Phone

A Cork Case

I love this cork case from Swedish company 15:21. Cork has a pleasant texture and has some grip to it, yet it's thin and lightweight. The edges on the front aren't raised, and this thing is skimpy enough that it probably won't protect your phone from a drop—just everyday scratches and scuffs. It's made from Portuguese cork, which is recyclable and biodegradable. Plus, trees aren't harmed when cork is harvested . It works well with the wireless MagSafe Charger, and the MagSafe Wallet sticks to the case much better than with many other cases that claim to be MagSafe compatible.

A Fabric Case

If you hate the feel of cool metal, try this suede case from German brand Arrivly. The artificial fibers are soft and velvety. Honestly, you might find yourself petting your phone more often than you use it. It will attract lint and pet hair fairly easily, but it's not difficult to clean. It's not a MagSafe case, but it works well with the MagSafe wireless charger (not so much with the MagSafe Wallet).

Image may contain Electronics Cell Phone Mobile Phone and Phone

A Triple Wireless Charger

If you have an iPhone, you may have other Apple-made products, like AirPods or the Apple Watch. If so, consider one system to charge all of them. I like this one from Belkin. It's completely MagSafe-compatible, so your iPhone 12 can hook up magnetically and will look like it's floating. The Apple Watch attaches to its charger magnetically, and there's a spot for the AirPods case on the base. The minimal design hides away most of the charger and elevates the gear more than any other 3-in-1 I've ever used, making for a very elegant system.

There's only one LED (for the AirPods), and it's not distracting at all. (It can also charge other third-party earbuds cases with wireless charging support.) The best news is that it supports 15-watt output for the iPhone 12 range, so your iPhone will charge the fastest that's wirelessly possible. Check out our Best Apple 3-in-1 Chargers guide for more recommendations.

Another option: Mophie's 3-in-1 charger ($140) is a great alternative if you'd rather avoid magnets. You can stand your iPhone on it, and there's space to plop your Apple Watch and AirPods. Since it doesn't charge via MagSafe, your phone will juice up slower than on the Belkin.

Anker power adapter

A Charging Adapter

None of the iPhone 12 models come with charging adapters in the box. Plus, the cable it does come with is a USB-C-to-Lightning; you might not have a USB-C power adapter lying around. Rather than buying an adapter from Apple, you should get this one from Anker. It's positively tiny—just a hair bigger than the 5-watt adapter that Apple used to include. However, the Nano Pro can output 20 watts, meaning it can fast-charge your iPhone. It only took around an hour to juice up my iPhone 12 Pro Max from 25 to 100 percent.

Alternatively, you can grab Anker's Nano II 65-watt adapter ($50) . This one has enough power to recharge your MacBook Pro, and it will safely charge your iPhone as well.

USBC Lightning cable

A Durable Cable

If you're using a mangled Apple-made cable to recharge your iPhone, it might be time for an upgrade. Apple's included cable is fine , but I've seen too many in tatters to believe it will withstand long-term abuse. I like Nimble's knit fabric USB-C–to–Lighting cables. They're made from recycled plastic and aluminum, are BPA- and PVC-free, and they ship in plastic-free packaging. They're also just plain attractive.

Hand holding small silver circular disc with an engraved apple logo on it in front of large silver luggage case

Find Your Gear

Frequently misplacing your keys, backpack, or wallet? One of the easiest ways for you to keep tabs on your gear is to use Apple's AirTag (though it's not without its flaws ). You pair it with the Find My app that's preinstalled on Apple devices, and put it in your bag, in your wallet, or on your keychain. If it's nearby, you'll see it on the map and can track it down fairly precisely. If it isn't , don't worry. You'll not only see the last known location, but AirTags also leverages all nearby Apple devices to try and ping its location back to you. You just need to wait until someone with an Apple gadget walks by.

We've rounded up other gadgets you can use to track your gear here . Want to track your dog or your kid? We've got options for that too !

Avoid These Accessories!

I'm not sure what's going on over at Otterbox's headquarters, but of the dozens of accessories I've tested for this guide, Otterbox makes the only three that I wholeheartedly do not recommend: the Otterbox Strada Wallet Folio ($70) , Otterbox Wallet for MagSafe ($40) , and Otterbox Folio Wallet MagSafe case ($23) . Yikes.

With the Strada, the leather doesn't feel real, the volume buttons are impossible to press without extraordinary pressure, and you can fit only two to three credit cards in it. The MagSafe wallet feels shoddy and weirdly sticky. It attracts a ton of dust and lint. The magnet also isn't very strong. Finally, the Folio wallet case is just too darn flappy. The front cover slides all over the iPhone's display, almost as if it was made for a different phone. Stay away.

The Best iPhone Cases for the iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max

A selection of our favorite cases for iPhone 12, arranged on a green background.

By Nick Guy

You’re either a case person or you’re not, but we always think putting a protector on your iPhone is a good idea, especially as repair prices continue to climb . The iPhone 12 is the first major redesign since 2017’s iPhone X, affording case makers an opportunity to come up with all-new designs and to refine models we’ve had good experiences with in the past. No matter what style case you prefer, we have recommendations, and we’ll continue to test as new models are released.

Smartish Gripmunk for iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

Best basic case for iphone 12 and 12 pro.

Like previous versions of the case we’ve recommended going back to the iPhone 7, the Gripmunk for the iPhone 12 is a great slim, protective, and affordable case—but plain.

While there are only three color options, you can get custom prints to personalize the case.

Why it’s great: Even if we aren’t big fans of the name—we preferred its previous name, the Base Grip— Smartish’s Gripmunk has been our favorite case since the iPhone 7 launched in 2016. The iPhone 12 version is no different, as it takes the elements we’ve praised and translates them to the new, flat design. This isn’t a flashy case, but it’s a dependable one.

The side buttons area of the Smartish Kung Fu Grip for iPhone 12.

The Grip is a single piece of a flexible rubber material called TPU, which has enough give to easily install on your phone but not so much that it’ll pull off when you don’t want it to or stretch out over time. The back is smooth while the edges have a slightly pebbly texture and finger grooves that help improve grip. Inside each of the four corners is a small air pocket that may help absorb some shock from drops or falls; we’ve dropped previous iPhones clad in this case dozens of times and never damaged their bodies. The screen is recessed between a protective lip that provides drop protection, but isn’t so tall as to get in the way of your thumb while you’re swiping. It’s unlikely you’ll find a case of this quality at a lower price. Any cheaper, and most cases will lack some—or all—of these highlights.

The bottom port and speaker area of the Smartish Kung Fu Grip for iPhone 12.

One feature that may fly under the radar is Smartish’s custom design option. On Amazon, you can choose the “secret menu,” offering a handful of patterns printed on the back of the case for a $10 premium. On the company’s website , you can upload your own images or text for a truly personalized case. The print quality is high, and it lasts.

MagSafe accessories won’t reliably stick to the back of this case, and the adhesive on accessories like PopSockets doesn’t always stick well either. But you can charge through it with the MagSafe Charger or any other Qi charger .

Other great cases

The Apple iPhone 12 | 12 Pro Silicone Case with MagSafe, shown in dark blue.

Apple’s iPhone 12 | 12 Pro Silicone Case with MagSafe is lined with soft fabric on the inside, and the exterior is a smooth silicone surface that covers the back and edges of the phone, including the bottom edge. Instead of having one long opening for the speaker, microphone, and Lightning port, as cases for older-generation phones did, this case has dedicated cutouts. All of the buttons depress with a satisfying click, not dampened at all by the silicone over them, and even if you have short nails or fingertips, flipping the ring/silent switch should be easy. This case is among the first to support MagSafe, one of the iPhone 12’s all-new features. A magnetic ring inside the case allows you to snap accessories onto the back, including Apple’s MagSafe Charger and iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe . If you’d prefer a less expensive MagSafe case, or don’t like the silicone texture, consider Spigen’s Mag Armor . It’s a good (if unexciting) basic case, and its MagSafe features work just as well as Apple’s.

The Caudabe Sheath case for iPhone 12.

Caudabe’s Sheath offers many of the same benefits as the Gripmunk with a slightly different design. The flexible case’s entire exterior has a rough texture for extra grip, rather than just the edges. Although it’s a bit unusual, we also like Urban Armor Gear’s Mouve . The somewhat bulky case has extended corners for extra protection, and the plastic back and rubbery sides offer a good grip. It’s a fun option if you’re looking for something with a little more character.

iphone 12 travel case

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Leather Case with MagSafe

Best leather case for iphone 12 pro max.

The only downside to the Leather Case is it’ll show wear over time.

Why it’s great: Apple has been selling a version of its Leather Case since 2013, which launched alongside the iPhone 5S. In that time, no one has come close to producing something better. The iPhone 12 | 12 Pro Leather Case with MagSafe is the latest in that line, and it continues to hold the title of “best leather case.” The materials are top-notch, the protection is as complete as this style offers, and the color options are great. And with the introduction of MagSafe on the iPhone 12 models, this year’s version includes MagSafe, too. You can use any of the (currently limited) supply of MagSafe accessories without having to strip your phone down. There’s really nothing else we could reasonably expect from a leather case.

Available in all three iPhone 12 sizes, the Leather Case is a thin, one-piece protector. It’s all leather on the outside, as opposed to some cases that simply have a panel of leather set into a plastic or rubber case. The material feels premium, and it provides grip. Unlike some prior versions, it also goes all the way around the phone’s back and sides, including the bottom edge, which we feel is an important improvement.

The button casing on the Apple leather case for iPhone 12.

The Leather Case has aluminum button covers, allowing the buttons underneath a satisfying feel. There’s a plastic ring around the rear camera array, which is slightly raised on the iPhone 12 Pro Max version. We’re smitten by this year’s color options, particularly the orangey-yellow California poppy.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Most people buy leather for the looks, but any leather case will show wear, and this includes Apple’s version. Across several years, we’ve seen various iterations of the Leather Case reach a pretty gnarly state. What starts out as handsome weathering becomes torn up, often down to the plastic shell underneath. If you plan on keeping your phone for more than a year, you might have to replace the Leather Case at some point. Apple also makes clear that if you use MagSafe, you’ll likely see a ring develop on the case over time.

Nomad’s Rugged Case for iPhone 12, shown in pale orange.

We generally think that if you’re choosing a leather case, you should get something that’s all leather. But Nomad’s Rugged Case is a good alternative if you want something that may be able to stand up to drops a little better, and if you’re okay with a case that’s only partially leather. Its body is flexible polycarbonate plastic, with a smooth sheet of leather over the back.

Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

If you’re looking to ditch your wallet, this case holds as many as three cards without sacrificing a nice design. But you should avoid it if you’re planning to use wireless charging.

Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 12 Pro Max

A wallet for iphone 12 pro max.

You can fit up to three cards, or some cash, in the wallet.

Why it’s great: Features like Apple Pay and Apple Wallet make it easier to digitize credit cards and carry fewer of them. That makes a wallet case that carries just a handful of essentials more and more practical. Smartish’s Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 has been our favorite wallet case for years and continues to be our top pick for the iPhone 12. It builds off the basic Gripmunk design, with an added pocket on the back for up to three cards.

A side view of the Smartish wallet case.

Because it’s molded TPU, the Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 is the same thickness whether you have cards in it or not; a raised piece of material on the inside provides tension to hold them in place even if you’re carrying fewer. Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 also covers a greater portion of your cards than other cases, leaving only a thumb-sized portion of the edge exposed on the left so that you can push the cards out. The design makes it easy to insert and remove those cards when you want to, but even with vigorous shaking, they otherwise stay in place.

Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 is thick enough that it likely won’t work on most Qi chargers (it didn’t on our top pick ), and it definitely won’t work with MagSafe.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Any case that carries cards is going to add bulk to your phone. While Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 is thicker than a bare phone or one in a basic case, it doesn’t feel overly thick. The card holder’s tapered edges help it fit comfortably in your hand. If you want the flexibility of having cards attached only when you want them, and separate when you don’t, Apple’s Leather Wallet with MagSafe is a better option, because it attaches to MagSafe-compatible cases and can be detached when you don’t want it on your phone.

The Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 2. case in magenta.

Smartish has a second wallet case, Wallet Slayer Vol. 2 , that’s also very good. Its body is mostly the same TPU material, but the card holder part is faux leather with room for the same three cards. There’s also a slot where you can insert a card to use it as a stand. We prefer Vol. 1 because it covers up more of your cards, but Vol. 2 is a little thinner. If you want a more premium wallet case, consider Mujjo’s Full Leather Wallet , which adds a card pocket to the back of its great leather case.

iphone 12 travel case

Smartish Gripzilla for iPhone 12 Pro Max

A more protective case for iphone 12 pro max.

Extended corners and shock-absorbing rubber inside should help prevent damage to your phone.

Why it’s great: Not everyone needs a super-protective case, but if you know you’re likely to drop your phone a lot or put it in otherwise precarious situations, the Smartish Gripzilla offers more protection than our other recommendations do. This case is designed to help you hold on to your phone and, should you drop it, to help your handset survive the fall. The grooves molded into the sides of the case are a perfect fit for fingers, and they’re deep enough to allow a really good grip without being especially obvious. A piece of soft rubber lines the inside of the TPU case, and that component, combined with raised corners with air pockets inside, should help absorb the shock from drops (nothing is a guarantee, though). Even with the case’s relatively thick material, it’s still easy to press the buttons and get to the Lightning port.

The protective inside of the Smartish Gripzilla iPhone 12 case.

Cases in this category are often expensive, suggesting a correlation between price and protection. But the $20 Gripzilla proves that’s not necessarily true. That price is affordable for a case, period, but particularly so for a case that will give you extra peace of mind.

Despite the Gripzilla’s size, you can still use a Qi charger or even a MagSafe Charger to power up your phone while it’s inside the case.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: By definition, a more protective case is bulkier than a less protective one. We don’t think the Gripzilla is a brick, but it does make the phone about 50% thicker, adding ⅛ inch.

The OtterBox Symmetry Series iPhone 12 case.

You can find such great cases at such fair prices that we don’t think it’s worth it to spend extra money on a bigger brand name. But if you’re willing to do that, OtterBox’s Symmetry Series stands out. The company has done an impressive job of slimming down one of its flagship models over the years, to the point where it doesn’t feel bulky the way you’d expect an extra-protective case to feel. The buttons click great, the colors are very nice, and you can wirelessly charge through the case. It’s also available in an equally great MagSafe version .

The Speck Presidio2 Pro case for iPhone 12.

We also like Speck’s Presidio2 Pro , and the Presidio2 Grip variant. The dual-layer plastic and rubber cases are both advertised as surviving 13-foot drops, and it certainly feels like they would. The Pro version has a finger-grease-attracting soft-touch finish that otherwise feels nice, while the Grip adds raised ridges, molded into the plastic (on previous iterations of the case, the ridges were rubber and would tear).

The Spigen Liquid Crystal, shown on a red iPhone 12.

A flexible plastic case with lots of protection and minimal branding, this model is the best clear case for the iPhone 12.

Tiny dots along the back of the case help prevent unattractive air gaps.

iphone 12 travel case

Spigen Liquid Crystal for iPhone 12 Pro Max

A clear case for iphone 12 pro max.

The rubbery material provides more grip than hard plastic.

Why it’s great: Using a clear case is a great way to show off an iPhone’s design while keeping it protected. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have some particularly nice color options, and Spigen’s Liquid Crystal case lets you display them. Made from a single piece of TPU, a flexible rubber-like plastic, this Spigen case is simple and protective. We like that its edges are totally transparent, in contrast to some other cases, which have colored borders that detract from the whole clear thing in the first place. The back panel is inlaid with a repeating series of small dots that prevent a “water splotch” look, something that used to be common on transparent cases. All the openings are properly sized, and the buttons click well.

The textured back cover on the Spigen clear case.

The Liquid Crystal doesn’t have a MagSafe ring, nor does it claim official support for that feature. We found that the MagSafe Charger worked through this case, but the Leather Wallet didn’t adhere strongly enough for us to be sure it wouldn’t accidentally fall off or get knocked off.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: All transparent cases yellow to some degree over time. It’s usually a gradual process, and you may not even notice the effect unless you compare your worn case against a brand-new one. Although we expect the Liquid Crystal to show its age at some point, it’s not expensive enough for us to be too mad about that.

Available colors: crystal clear

The Smartish Kung Fu Grip Nothin’ to Hide, shown on a red iPhone 12.

Smartish makes a clear variant, Nothin’ to Hide , of our main pick, and it’s just as great as the opaque options. Liquid Crystal is better if you want a truly, wholly clear case, but consider the Grip if you’re okay with frosted edges. ESR’s Air Armor and Metal Kickstand Case are good alternatives if you want extra protection or a kickstand, respectively.

Any transparent MagSafe case is going to have to compromise: the magnetic ring is going to show through no matter what. Our favorite approach comes from Sonix, with The Match . The designers embraced the ring, making it a part of the design while still offering a transparent case. There’s a metallic overlay on top of the ring, with ribbons extending from the top and bottom, to the edges of the case. It’s a handsome design that looks far better than the approach of just sticking the magnet in there.

Don’t buy a thin case like this for drop protection; it will help prevent scratches.

iphone 12 travel case

Caudabe Veil for iPhone 12 Pro Max

A thin case for iphone 12 pro max.

The Veil is the next-best thing to having a totally bare phone.

We think you should choose a case that offers some shock-absorbing qualities, but we also understand there are those who want the thinnest possible case and are willing to give up more significant protection. In that case, we recommend Caudabe’s Veil . Among a handful of nearly identical thin cases, it’s better enough to earn our recommendation.

All the cases in this category are essentially the same superthin piece of plastic molded to wrap around the phone while adding next to no bulk. The Veil, and the rest, don’t have any sort of soft materials or air pockets for absorbing shocks, or button coverage. They’re better suited for adding some grip and preventing scratches to the iPhone’s rear glass than preventing breaks.

The port area of the Caudabe Veil case, shown on an iPhone 12.

We prefer the Veil to the competition because it has just a bit of texture, providing for a better grip than cases with a totally smooth surface. It’s not rough or uncomfortable in any way. Otherwise, there are no material differences between this case and the rest of the many superthin cases we’ve tried.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: As mentioned, the Veil (and every other superthin case) won’t do much to prevent your phone from breaking if you drop it. Only choose it if you’re comfortable with that compromise. The color options are also more limited than we’d like. If you prefer this style but want a different color, check out the competitors we mention below.

Available colors: black, frost

The Totallee Thin Case, on an iPhone 12.

Totallee’s Thin Case and Peel’s Super Thin Case are identical to one another, and similar to Caudabe’s Veil. Both have a smooth surface, rather than the textured finish we prefer on the Veil, but they offer a wider color selection. They also each have a two-year warranty with one free replacement during that period—that’s double what Caudabe offers—but they’re a little more expensive to start. Choose one of these if you prefer the colors or think you’re likely to take advantage of the warranty.

Quad Lock Case for iPhone 12 Pro Max

An accessory-friendly case for iphone 12 pro max.

You can swap between activities without having to remove or otherwise change out your case.

The Quad Lock Case is the best option if you like to use your phone for activities like riding a bike or motorcycle, running, looking at directions while driving, and more. The sleek TPU case has a clever attachment mechanism on the back that works with an array of accessories, but it isn’t much thicker than a standard case.

We like the Quad Lock because you can use it just as you would any other case without much extra bulk, and it has the widest and most secure range of mounts we’ve found among the cases like it. On the back of the case is a roughly 1¼-inch, X-shaped mounting point housed in an ever-so-slight bump. Each of the mounts has a corresponding relief of that shape, allowing for a twist-and-lock attachment: Just twist a quarter turn, and the pieces lock in place.

A close up of the attachment connection area on the Quad Lock iPhone 12 case.

Compared with other accessory cases, Quad Lock’s lineup is more robust with a dozen different mounts. This includes the Car Mount , Sports Armband (our upgrade pick for the best armband ), Belt Clip , Bike Mount (a staff favorite), Out Front Mount (also for bikes), Wall Mount , Universal Adaptor , Home/Office Desk Mount , and Tripod Adaptor . If you don’t find yourself going back and forth between at least a couple of these accessories, the Quad Lock system likely doesn’t make sense for you. But if you can see yourself snapping your case in place when you want to go for a ride or a run, it’s a great option.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Quad Lock case comes only in black, so if you’re looking for something with a little more personality, it may not be for you. If you use a wireless charger, you may find that the extra thickness either prevents or at least interferes with charging (MagSafe charging simply doesn’t work). Quad Lock sells an expensive wireless charging head that works with its car and desk mounts and addresses the problem for those who encounter it.

Available colors: black

The Spigen Gearlock Bike Mount Case, shown on an iPhone 12.

Spigen’s Gearlock Bike Mount Case is quite similar to the Quad Lock Case (to be honest, it feels just shy of a knockoff). It utilizes the same sort of twist-to-lock attachment system for accessories and comes only in black. It has a layer of shock-absorbing foam inside, which gives it a leg up over the Quad Lock, but it falls short when it comes to accessories. In contrast to the dozen mounts Quad Lock offers, Spigen only has a universal adapter , bike stem/handlebar mount , out front bike mount , and action cam mount adapter .

I’ve been Wirecutter’s case reviewer since 2014, and in my career as an accessories writer, I’ve reviewed around 2,000 iPhone cases. That number spans multiple generations of Apple devices, including every iPhone since the iPhone 4 and every iPad. I’ve probably handled more iPhone cases than almost anyone on the planet, so I have a particularly experienced perspective and depth of knowledge when it comes to these items.

When choosing the best cases, we consider a huge number of factors, from objective measures such as physical dimensions and level of protection to subjective assessments of look and feel.

Although we have been testing cases for many years and have had some consistent picks across multiple iPhone generations, no case automatically becomes a pick just because versions of it have been picks in the past. With the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 mini, and 12 Pro Max in hand, we put each new case on the phones to see how well it fit and functioned.

While we have a variety of recommendations across various styles, we consider all of our picks on the following criteria:

  • Drop protection: We seek out cases that can adequately protect a phone without adding unnecessary embellishments or too much bulk. We don’t conduct drop tests, but we do look for cases that are obviously capable of withstanding some impact. (Even a heavy-duty case can’t guarantee that your phone will survive every scenario intact—for example, a direct hit to the screen will still do damage.) The obvious exception here is superthin cases, which purposely compromise some drop protection in favor of a thinner profile.
  • Full coverage: As a general rule, the more of the phone that a case protects, the better; we prefer cases that protect everything but the phone’s screen. The best cases provide button protection with tactility that mimics—or in some instances even enhances—the way the buttons feel on a bare iPhone. We also like cases that don’t leave the top or bottom edge of the phone exposed, though such exposure isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker. On the other hand, we don’t consider cases with a circular opening to expose the Apple logo on the back of the phone because they offer less overall protection with no real benefit.
  • Raised front lip: As Apple’s case guidelines (PDF) explain, “Exposed glass on the device shall not come within 0.85 mm of a flat surface, such as a table or floor, in any orientation when the case is attached.” A lip around the edges of the phone’s display helps prevent cracked screens—one of the biggest worries with any smartphone—but it also helps to keep the screen from getting scratched if you place the phone screen-down. We use a 0.85-millimeter feeler gauge, per Apple’s guidelines, to test each case.
  • No wireless interference: A case shouldn’t reduce performance with any wireless signals—Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC (near-field communication, necessary to use Apple Pay), or Qi wireless charging. In our tests, we verify that each of these features works with the case on. Although wallet cases may properly support wireless charging, you shouldn’t expect them to, and if you need wireless charging we recommend that you look at a folio instead. Additionally, the case shouldn’t prevent you from using any gestures. That’s an especially important consideration with the iPhone 12 series, which relies on an upward swipe from the bottom edge of the screen as a primary interaction.
  • Broad aesthetic appeal: Although you can find a case suitable for any aesthetic preference, we look for cases that have simple, even elegant designs—cases that are likely to appeal to most people—rather than models that adhere to specific aesthetic choices.
  • MagSafe: Apple’s MagSafe system is a bit of a complicated beast. It refers to both magnetic wireless chargers and accessories, as well as cases with a magnetic ring built in to support them. A case without the magnetic ring may still support charging with a MagSafe charger, as long as it’s thin enough, but likely won’t work with a car mount or wallet. At this early point, it’s mostly just Apple cases that fully support MagSafe, but we expect many more to add it soon. In the meantime, we’re testing each case we recommend to see if wireless charging through the case works, at least.

We’re getting more cases as they become available, including thin and folio-style cases, and we’ll continue to spend time with our early favorites. We expect to update this guide and add more information regularly.

ESR’s Soft Case is the first third-party case to work with the MagSafe attachment and charging system thanks to an embedded magnetic ring. Unfortunately, the case itself feels very cheap, and the material around the Lightning port and mute switch pulls away too easily and feels like it may rip with normal use.

Moment’s Thin Case is made of TPU and is quite similar to Smartish’s Gripmunk, though significantly more expensive. It has shock-absorbing air pockets along the inner perimeter but no grips on the sides. If you’re into photography and third-party camera lenses, it’s worth considering because it’s compatible with Moment’s Drop-in Lens Mount (one is included), which allows you to attach the company’s lenses .

Spigen’s Liquid Air Armor comes in only one color—black—and the raised triangle pattern on the back probably isn’t for everyone. If you like the look and feel, though, it’s a good, inexpensive option with a fair amount of grip and notably clicky buttons. The company’s Neo Hybrid takes that same design and adds a plastic border, which provides some contrast but doesn’t necessarily look better.

Most basic cases are primarily flexible plastic or rubber. Caudabe’s Synthesis , on the other hand, combines a frosted, hard-plastic back with a shock-absorbing border. We found the buttons to be a little stiff (Caudabe says it’s tweaking them), and we generally prefer a case made of TPU or a similar material, but the Synthesis has a sleek design that makes it a good option for those who prefer plastic.

We don’t like the one long volume button cover on the BodyGuardz Split , and we found its many edges to be unpleasantly sharp to the touch.

The buttons on Urban Armor Gear’s Outback Bio are very difficult to press unless you hit them dead-center.

Urban Armor Gear’s Anchor is hard to install, and we don’t like the single long volume button or hard plastic back very much.

Incipio’s Organicore’s volume buttons are far too stiff. We couldn’t tell when presses were registering or not registering without looking at the volume indicator on the phone’s screen.

We found the buttons on Incipio’s Duo Case to be far too stiff, and we don’t like the creaking noise the dual-layer case makes as the rubber rubs against the plastic, especially during installation.

OtterBox’s Figura is a surprising miss, considering it comes from a respected case maker and is the first third-party case with MagSafe that Apple has featured in its stores. The soft TPU case doesn’t look or feel like it should cost $50, and the MagSafe element, a flat panel with the embedded magnetic ring, looks more like an afterthought than an intentional design. The Aneu feels better, with a hard plastic back and rubber edges, but again, it doesn’t feel like a premium case, just a fairly nice one.

Lifeproof’s Wāke is a simple plastic shell with a few design flourishes. While we appreciate that it’s made from recycled materials and the company makes donations to water-based charities when you buy the case, it’s simply too expensive for what you’re getting.

Caseology’s NanoPop (from the same parent company as Spigen) feels similar to Apple’s Silicone Case, which isn’t our favorite texture, and it’s too thin to make us feel well-protected from a drop.

Caseology’s Legion has edges that are so roughly textured, they feel like sandpaper. It’s just not pleasant to hold.

We don’t like the fake-metal look of Caseology’s Parallax , and overall, we think the design is more niche than general interest.

Caseology’s Dual Grip is a plastic shell, the least impressive case style. It offers virtually no shock protection. You can do far better for the price.

Tech21’s Evo Slim is just a very plain, thin TPU case that feels like it should cost $15, not $30.

The buttons on Gear 4’s Rio Snap feel mushier than we prefer, and while it’s a totally fine case, it’s not worth its significant price premium over the MagSafe cases we recommend.

Apple’s Leather Sleeve is more useful for protecting your phone when you’re not using it than when you are. The idea is that you’ll pull your phone out of the leather pocket when you need it. A small window displays the time and will show you if a call is coming in, but despite the earpiece cutout, you can’t actually answer calls while the phone is in the sleeve. We also didn’t see any other notifications pop up through the window. In addition to the phone itself, there’s room for two or three cards, and the Leather Sleeve comes with a color-matched wrist strap. It also supports MagSafe charging and changes your phone’s screen to match the color of the leather variant you choose while it’s in there. We think most people should get a case that protects their phone full-time, rather than spend $130 on one that only offers part-time coverage.

Mujjo’s Full Leather Case is the next-best case compared to Apple’s, but there’s no good reason to choose it over the Apple option. The bottom edge is exposed, and the buttons, which are molded into the leather, and squishier.

ESR’s Slim Full Leather Case simply feels too cheap. The pebbled-leather case costs half of what Apple’s does, but the material feels half as premium at best. We give ESR credit for the nice buttons, but we think that if you’re going to choose a leather case, you should spend a bit more and get the real deal.

Urban Armor Gear’s Metropolis LT is a fine option if you want something a little more protective, but for the same price as Apple’s Leather Case, we prefer full leather, as opposed to just the panel set into rubber.

Bellroy’s Phone Case (also available in a wallet variant) combines rubber and plastic, and on our review unit, the volume buttons’ tactility was too far dampened to be enjoyable to use. The same goes for its 3-card wallet case , especially when you take its high price into account.

Spigen’s Slim Armor CS is a bulky-feeling case. It can hold only two cards underneath its slide-open door, and the design makes us worry that the door could snap off.

More protective

Lifeproof’s Nëxt is one of the most expensive cases we’ve tested so far, and although it promises to survive drops from 2 meters, it doesn’t offer the waterproofing or dustproofing the brand was once known for. Those aspects may be less important as iPhones themselves become more resilient to the elements, but we don’t think there’s any reason to spend $80 on a case that offers only drop protection.

Lander’s Vise makes the iPhone’s buttons feel stiff, and the covers are in line with the rest of the case, so they’re difficult to feel by touch even though they’re ribbed. The hard-plastic ridged back is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing; we lean toward the latter camp.

The Lander Torrey is a rather plain-looking case—not a bad thing in and of itself—that makes the phone’s buttons far too hard to press.

Casetify’s Ultra Impact comes in a wide range of see-through colors, including totally clear, and you can add up to eight characters printed along the back for free. Rubber bumpers on the outside of the four corners certainly offer extra protection, but they’re kind of ugly, and we just can’t deal with the brand’s name being printed around the camera lenses.

To quote the kids, ESR’s Machina Tough Case ain’t it. Although it does feel like it’ll stand up to a drop, the fake bolts make it look more like a toy than something worth throwing on your $800-plus phone. Some people will like the built-in kickstand.

Only a small percentage of people need the level of protection offered by OtterBox’s Defender Series Pro (or its belt clip), but if you do need that, it’s not a bad option at all. Yes, it’s expensive, and yes, it’s bulky. But it is thick in the right ways, with plastic and rubber layers and a foam cushion inside, all in the name of drop protection.

Generally we don’t like multi-piece cases because they’re a hassle to put on and remove. OtterBox’s Commuter Series falls into that category; we’d rather spend $10 on the slimmer, one-piece Symmetry Series.

Speck’s Presidio2 Armor Cloud certainly feels like it could take a tumble, but if you’re going to be spending this much on a case, you deserve more than just one color option.

The buttons on Speck’s Presidio Perfect-Clear and Presidio Perfect-Clear with Grips are far too tight. The kind of pressure we’d normally expect to trigger them doesn’t even register. They’re a little bit better on Presidio Perfect-Mist , but still don’t feel quite right.

Incipio’s Grip is a fairly simple case, mostly plastic with some rubber for shock absorption. The raised, repeating trilobe pattern along the edges may feel too sharp for some people’s tastes, though.

Incipio’s Slim is a no-frills option that just doesn’t feel like it justifies its $40 price tag.

Survivor’s Strong , Endurance , and Extreme are cases in the same family, on a continuum of protection. Strong is rated to stand up to 10-foot drops, Endurance can take 14-foot falls, and Extreme should survive 16-foot tumbles. We’d rather see one great case than three, especially with such minor distinctions between them: Who wouldn’t rather have the extra 6 feet of drop protection? The cases otherwise look and feel nice if you like the styling, although we wish the volume buttons were a bit more distinct from one another, and that the two-piece Extreme came with installation instructions.

We don’t have any complaints about Gear4’s Wembley Palette , other than its limited color options. The TPU case is lined along its top and bottom edges and corners with D3O, a shock-absorbing material that should help mitigate damage from drops without adding much bulk. If the case came in more than just the translucent gray color option, it’d have more broad appeal.

On the other hand, Gear4’s Holborn Slim doesn’t feel like a $40 case. Although it also integrates D3O, it feels like a cheaper option and less protective.

Transparent

Apple’s Clear Case with MagSafe is a disappointing miss. We much prefer a case with some obvious drop protection to this model’s fingerprint-magnet polycarbonate body. The buttons are just a bit more flush to the case than we prefer, and the bottom edge is open, leaving it exposed to damage. The MagSafe inset is a mixed bag: Although it’s functional, providing support for charging and accessories, the large white ring and vertical line underneath mar the otherwise clear case.

Caudabe’s Lucid Clear is a somewhat slippery piece of plastic with no button protection. You can do better for the price.

Nimble’s Disc Case is one of many eco-friendly cases appealing to green sensibilities. It’s made of recycled CDs, it comes in plastic-free packaging, and the company offers free recycling for an old case when you order. To some people, those aspects are worth the premium. We’re not fans of the volume button cover, though, which consists of one long strip rather than designated “up” and “down” protectors. Our review unit also arrived with a gnarly smell, but that dissipated over a few days.

Spigen’s other transparent case, the Ultra Hybrid , is perennially popular. Instead of being all flexible plastic, it has rubbery sides and a hard back. Our main issue with the case is how it handles the buttons: The covers are flush with the body of the case, with only small indents at the top and bottom differentiating them. Finding them by feel is more difficult than on most cases that have raised protectors.

The BodyGuardz Stack has a frosted perimeter as well as along the bottom third of its back, which may turn off some people who want a wholly transparent case, but our bigger concern involves its jiggly-feeling volume and power button covers—they would absolutely drive us mad over an extended period.

Rather than being totally clear, the BodyGuardz Avenue is available only with a black or blue border. The case makes the buttons hair-trigger sensitive yet dampens the clicky feeling, and we found the edges where the back meets the sides to be uncomfortably sharp.

Casetify’s Impact Case has a tacky-feeling back that may grip pockets too tightly, as well as overly pronounced logos circling the camera array.

Griffin’s Survivor Clear is a good option if you’re looking for a clear case that might offer a bit more protection, as it has impact-absorbing material around the entire perimeter (making it look more frosted than totally clear). We found that the volume buttons felt a little too flush with the side though and would prefer if there were more than just a small indent dividing them.

The border on Caseology’s Skyfall is plastic painted to look like metal, which we find to be generally cheap looking.

Tech21’s Evo Clear is a nice option if you’re OK with a slightly bulkier clear case that promises 12-foot drop protection.

Gear4’s Crystal Palace Snap with MagSafe is very difficult to install, and we don’t think it looks much nicer than Apple’s transparent case.

Accessory-friendly

Rokform’s Crystal Case and Rugged Case are both bulky, heavy cases that work with a proprietary magnetic accessory system. They both block access to MagSafe charging and standard Qi charging as well.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Let’s face it: stepping out for the day with “just the essentials” isn’t as easy to pull off when you’re traveling. Between the size of your phone, cash, passport, and other just-in-case items, it’s not quite as easy for everything to fit in your pocket when you’re away from home. So condensing as much as you can is key. Yes, having your credit and debit cards stored in your digital wallet definitely helps, but you still have important travel essentials like foreign currency or identification cards to account for. If you’re searching for a minimalist solution to feeling weighed down by too much stuff, phone wallets are a great alternative for housing all of the precious cargo you need by your side. We’ve found convenient picks that carry cards, cash, even picks that have a bottle opener (who knew!), all in one easy-to-manage case.

Best Overall

Casebus mychal wallet phone case.

Equipped with a card holder, camera lens protector, and a metal kickstand all in one, this wallet phone case is highly functional.

It is not MagSafe.

Don’t be fooled by its slim design and lightweight material — the functionality of the Casebus Mychal Wallet Phone Case is hard to beat. The raised bumper interior absorbs the shock from falls, and the high-quality exterior offers a strong layer of protection for your phone. A card slot on the back holds your credit cards, and the convenient finger cut out provides easy access. Its sturdy metal ring stand is perfect for hands-free viewing while you’re on a plane or train, and the sliding camera cover protects your phone’s camera lens from scratches and smudges. This case has more functions than you might have realized you needed!

Best Magnetic

Bellroy mod phone case + wallet.

The easily removable magnetic wallet matches seamlessly with the case.

It’s only compatible with the iPhone 14 and 15 models.

Tech forward with high design in mind, we love the beautiful streamlined Bellroy Mod Phone Case + Wallet. Bellroy’s smart ModRail system keeps the wallet firmly attached to the phone case, so even though it’s magnetic, it won’t fall off as it shifts in your pocket or travel bag. The hidden trap door compartment cleverly secures your cards in the wallet, and the minimalist design maintains a thin silhouette. While this phone wallet currently only supports the iPhone 14 and 15 models, we love that it’s compatible with wireless charging and can fit up to three cards.

The Details: Leather with microfiber lining | Fits iPhone 14 and 15 models | 1 card slot to fit 3 cards | Supports wireless charging

OtterBox Detachable Folio Wallet

It's extremely lightweight and works well with an OtterBox case you might already have.

The case is sold separately.

If you’re an OtterBox loyalist , this detachable folio will pair well and give you added safety. Available in fun colors like strawberry pink and boat captain blue, we love this as an alternative to the more neutral colors of other popular folios we’re used to seeing. This detachable folio wallet is meant to pair with an OtterBox MagSafe case , and is a great way to up the functionality and privacy of your smartphone. It’s also a little more lightweight than the standard folio, which is great for lightening your travel load.

The Details: Synthetic leather | iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 | 3 card slots | Supports wireless charging

Best Leather

Mujjo full leather wallet case.

The premium European leather ages beautifully and can withstand wear and tear.

The leather pocket is a snug fit for cards.

Made from premium European leather, this is a step above your average phone case. Not only does the shell of the Mujjo Leather Wallet Case age beautifully, but it also stands up well to wear and tear. The machined-metal buttons add a touch of sophistication, too. Whether you’re in a car en route to your next sightseeing destination or lounging in your hotel room, there’s no need to remove your case to charge up thanks to the MagSafe compatibility which accommodates wireless charging. The leather pocket holds up to three credit cards, but it might take some elbow grease to access them the more cards you pack in. Compatible with the iPhone 14pro , iPhone 15 pro and Samsung Galaxy S9 , this case is well worth the upgrade.

The Details: Leather | Fits iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphones | 1 card pouch to fit 3 cards

Aulumu G03 Carbon Fiber Card Case

It has a bottle opener, kickstand, and built-in ruler.

It’s probably best to remove the attachment when charging your phone.

MacGyver is exactly who comes to mind when we see all of the features of the Aulumu G03 Carbon Fiber Card Case. Made of lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum, it comes with a stainless steel kickstand, a built-in bottle opener, and a mini-ruler. This is the phone wallet equivalent of a Swiss Army knife — and it’s TSA-compliant! It’s also equipped with an Apple AirTag holder that gives you added peace of mind on the go. Last but not least, you get an included RFID-shielding card and a replacement elastic for your finger holder. The Aulumu connects to your phone via a magnet and is MagSafe, though at its top capacity of 12 cards, I’d probably remove the attachment when charging my phone.

The Details: Aluminum and carbon | Fits most smartphones | 12 card slots | Supports wireless charging

Best Silicone

Karrint soft liquid silicone phone wallet case.

The no frills design is simple yet effective.

It can only hold a maximum of two cards.

When looking for a sleek, functional phone case , silicone is usually your safest bet. It’s a lightweight material that provides basic protection, and this one from Karrint comes in ample color options (and at a great price!). This silicone design is a great choice that will keep your phone scuff-free. It’s also not bulky, so you can easily grab some juice from your wireless charger without having to remove the cover from your phone. Space in the card slot is limited, however, so you’ll only have room for two of your most important cards.

The Details: Silicone | Fits most smartphones | 1 card slot to fit 2 cards | Supports wireless charging

Best Popsocket

Popsockets popwallet.

We love the fun design options of the PopWallet.

The adhesive of the PopWallet doesn’t stick to all materials.

If you’ve grown to love the comfortable, ergonomic design of the PopSockets, combine it with the PopWallet for casual ease and to help you reduce the bulk of your everyday wallet. The comfortable PopSockets design acts as a stand for hands-free viewing and combines with the PopWallet to house your bank cards, identification cards, business cards, and other valuables. To retrieve your cards, there’s the easy push and pull feature. Though the adhesive of the PopWallet will likely not stick to silicone or textured phone cases, it’s compatible with any smartphone.

The Details: Polycarbonate | Fits most smartphones | 1 card slot to fit 3-5 cards

Best Wristlet

All saints fetch phone wristlet.

Bloomingdale's

This style has two phone pockets that are roomy enough to last you through a few phone generations.

You will have to take your phone out to charge.

Behold: an updated version of a wristlet that’s the perfect “errand bag.” This leather All Saints bag, with its seven slots, has room for all of your cash, points cards, and ID cards — and of course, your cell phone. At about eight inches by four inches, this wristlet fits easily in a larger purse and can serve as an oversized wallet. With both an exterior slip pocket and an interior snap pocket for your phone, there are ample choices whether you’re looking for more security or easier access to your phone. Great for travel, the inner pocket of this wristlet can hold your passport as well as foreign currency.

The Details: Leather | Fits most smartphones | 10 card slots

Best Crossbody

Bandolier mila magsafe charging crossbody.

Bandolier Mila

This timeless, minimalist design is an easy replacement for a purse.

Bandolier has limited options for Androids.

Bandolier’s high quality pebble leather designs always put style at the forefront and turns your phone into a beautiful accessory on its own. The Mila MagSafe Charging Crossbody combines a phone case with the luxury handbag feel, giving you the option to be conveniently hands-free. The crossbody design makes this style convenient for travel days spent exploring or day-to-day errands. The snap cover compartment hides your cards so they’re not on full display — like when you may put your phone down at a restaurant. The two-slot card holder is a great upgrade for you to separate identification cards and bank cards or hotel room keys. Best of all, this design is compatible with MagSafe charging.

The Details: Leather | Fits most iPhones  | 2 slots to fit 4 cards

Best Standing

Journey ezmo magsafe wallet & phone stand.

We love that it doubles as a stand.

It doesn’t come with a case, so consider this if you’re also looking for protection for your phone.

The classic leather cardholder gets a tech upgrade with the Journey Ezmo wallet and phone stand. Lightweight and easy to use, this stand is made with high-quality vegan leather that magnetically attaches to your phone. If you prefer to use your phone sans a case and let the sleek design of your phone do the talking, then this wallet is for you. It’s sturdy, but doesn’t take up too much real estate. This case also has RFID protection for your cards. The slim, streamlined design is compatible with iPhone 12 models and newer. To make it compatible with an older iPhone or an Android, you can simply attach a magnet ring. While this doesn’t come with a phone case, it can be used with a MagSafe case of any brand.

The Details: Vegan leather | iPhone 12 to iPhone 15 | 2 card slots

Tips for Buying a Phone Wallet

Know what size will fit your device.

Some phone wallets attach to your phone case while others are a part of your case. Know the size and model of your device, or actual dimensions so that the phone wallet will fit. Some designs are only compatible with iPhones due to charging and magnetism, so make sure the style you’re selecting is compatible with the model you have.

Choose the best style and capacity for your needs

Is your wallet bursting at the seams? Well, a phone wallet might be an adjustment – albeit a welcome one – for you. Alternatively, you might be a minimalist who just carries around a couple of important bank cards. What are you using the phone wallet for? Consider if it’s serving as a replacement for your purse or travel bag (in which case you might want a wristlet) or just supplementing your purse or tote. Maybe you might want a folio that could fit your passport as well. If you’re carrying the phone wallet in another purse, consider what style and design will suit your needs.

Prioritize durability and added protection

Not all phone wallets come with cases, so if you want added protection for your phone, a case is a necessary add-on. Decide if you will be attaching your phone wallet to a case you already have, and if so, make sure it will stick to the case's material.

A phone wallet attaches to your phone via a magnet or adhesive, and can attach directly to the phone itself or to a phone case. A phone wallet case is a phone case that has the addition of card slots to place bank cards, identification cards, or cash. A mobile wallet is the digitized wallet system of your bank cards, grocery cards, airline or train tickets etc, uploaded into the wallet app on your smartphone.

Depending on the size of the phone wallet, you can use it for identification, credit cards, business cards or even folded bills! Leave room for a RFID-blocking card if security is a concern, since not all phone wallets come with this feature.

Not all phone wallets are MagSafe and compatible with wireless chargers. Read the specifications before purchasing. Some phone wallets require you to remove your cards to charge, or remove the case. Others work seamlessly with wireless charging. If easy charging is a priority to you as you’re traveling and on the go, be sure you’re getting one compatible with wireless charging.

Hard to beat

Speck cases.

I have expensive tastes, and I personally like Speck's Presidio2 Armor Cloud (white model on the right in the photo). But the Presidio2 Pro (gray case in the photo) is also excellent. If you want an apple clear case, Speck has several models for iPhone 12 case to choose from, including the Presidio Perfect-Clear with Grips.

All the new models have very good drop protection (13 to 16 feet, depending on the model) as well as Speck's Microban antimicrobial protection.

Top cheap case

Spigen ultra hybrid.

If you're looking for a cheap clear case for your iPhone 12, Spigen's Ultra Hybrid is a good value at around $14 to $15, depending on the trim color and which version of iPhone 12 you have (yes, there are a few color options).

No drop rating is listed for the case, but Spigen's transparent cases feel like they offer reasonable protection. If you want a tough case with stronger protection, the Spigen Tough Armor case is an option for $15, but I personally prefer Spigen's Ultra and Neo Hybrid cases. Note that a lot of these cheaper clear cases have a habit of turning yellow and degrading over time (and becoming less translucent), but they're cheap enough that you probably won't mind shelling out for a replacement case for your Apple iPhone if that happens.

spigen-ultra-hybrid-iphone-12

Built-in stand and grip strap

Clckr cases.

I've recently become a fan of Clckr's cases, which feature a built-in stand and grip strap that folds out and clicks into place on the back of your phone. Clckr sells just the stand-strap accessory to stick on the back of your phone or on a case, but the case with the integrated stand accessory is better and comes in a few different styles, including clear (I like the Saffiano blue but it's currently only available in black).

The cases aren't rugged but they're protective enough, with raised edges to protect the screen. The one I used with my iPhone 11 Pro for several months held up well.

With the stand clicked in place, you can use your device hands-free in either portrait or landscape mode. Note that you can wirelessly charge your phone with this case on, though you have to be more careful about placing it in the right spot on a wireless charging pad for it to work. The new models have antimicrobial protection.

clckr-iphone-12-3

Excellent under $20

Cyrill cases.

I only recently learned that Cyrill is a sister brand to Spigen and its cases are arguably slightly better, although they cost a few bucks more. We're linking to the Leather Brick case, pictured here in tan and navy (it's faux "vegan" leather), but the Silicone case (pictured in light blue) and transparent Cecile cases are also good. The Silicone case is basically a knockoff of the Apple Silicone case without the MagSafe feature.

cyrill-iphone-12-cases

Best slim OtterBox case

Otterbox symmetry series.

OtterBox's super protective Defender series case is available for all the iPhone 12 models with Magsafe compatibility, but most people want something less bulky. The Symmetry series is slim with beveled edges, making it a good mix of sleek and protective. A raised bumper helps act as a screen protector.

Multiple color options are available, including clear, and I'm digging the clear version of the Symmetry Plus Pop case, pictured in the middle, which integrates a PopSockets PopGrip and is wireless charging-compatible, which is important.

OtterBox's Commuter case offers slightly more protection and is also pretty slim and has grips on the back.

otterbox-iphone-12-cases

Artist-inspired

Casely cases.

Brooklyn, New York-based Casely makes "cute and protective" cases that have a variety of graphic artists behind their designs. The cases usually start at $25, but the online store often offers discounts.

casely-iphone-12-cases

Enhanced MagSafe option

Apple cases with magsafe.

MagSafe accessories will still stick to your phone if you have a standard thin case, but not nearly as well as if you use one of Apple's MagSafe cases, which have their own set of embedded magnets that line up with the magnets in your phone.

Apple's Clear Case with MagSafe is nice because it allows you to show off your phone's colored finish and the embedded markings tell you exactly where to attach the MagSafe charger for optimal charging speeds (you apparently need Apple's 20-watt USB-C charging to get the maximum 15-watt wireless charging speeds). The only issue with the clear case is that it leaves the bottom of your phone exposed.

If that bothers you, the Silicone case (pictured, left) with MagSafe is the better option. It works the same way as the Clear case does, with an embedded magnet ring, you just can't see it. The Silicone case is available in eight color options.

MagSafe stuff isn't cheap, but it is fun to play with magnetic objects and they do offer some conveniences. The bottom line is that if you do want to try MagSafe accessories and to protect your phone with a case, you're best off with one directly from the Apple Store, or another MagSafe-certified case.

apple-iphone-12-cases

Best wood case

Kerfcase plywood case.

KerfCase has been making handmade wooden cases for a while, and its new Plywood case is not only more durable but less expensive than some, starting at $50, with 6-foot drop protection and a limited lifetime repair warranty. I like it better than other wood cases I've tried. It's also worth noting that Apple's MagSafe charger will stick to the back of it, and KerfCase sells matching charging docks for the Apple MagSafe charger (yes, it's an accessory for an accessory).

kerf-wooden-iphone-12-cases

Slim, stylish, protective

British case-maker Gear4, now owned by Zagg, makes cases that are right up there with OtterBox and Speck, all of them lined with the company's D3O shock-absorbing material and featuring beveled edges to protect your phone. My favorites include (from left to right) the Wembley Palette, Crystal Palace Iridescent, Battersea and Piccadilly. All of them are rated for 13-foot drop protection and the Battersea is rated for 16 feet.

gear4-iphone-12-cases

Premium case for a little less

X-doria raptic cases.

X-Doria's Raptic cases come in a variety of styles and cost a little less than competing premium cases from Speck and OtterBox. The thicker Raptic Shield (pictured on left) costs $30 while the Raptic Air (pictured on right), which I personally like, is also $30. The Shield has 10-foot drop protection while the Air is rated for 13-foot drop protection. Both have an antimicrobial treatment.

x-doira-iphone-12-cases

Teen spirit

Casetify cases.

Casetify is known for eye-catching designs on the back of a clear case. They're relatively slim, sleek-looking cases that offer decent protection and come in a variety of design patterns, with some definite appeal to teenagers. Some of the designs are hit-or-miss but I liked the samples I got. I should note that prices appear to have gone up.

casetify-iphone-12-cases

Best mounting case

Rokform's been making tough iPhone cases for years and aside from their durability, their key feature is the ability to use them with various mounts -- including bike and motorcycle mounts -- that are sold separately. I personally prefer the Crystal series but the Rugged case is slightly more, well, rugged.

Rokform's cases have removable magnets and they're compatible with wireless charging if you remove the included center magnet. "With the lower magnet still intact, you can still wireless-charge while utilizing magnetic mounting and all of our mounts," Rokform says.

rokform-iphone-12

Slick design

Bodyguardz cases.

BodyGuardz was initially known for its screen protectors, but in recent years it's put out some interesting iPhone cases. I personally like the $45 Harmony (pictured left), which has a more square bottom. The Stack (picture in the middle) is $25 while the Avenue (on right) is no longer available. They come in a few color options.

bodyguardz-iphone-12-cases

Affordable wallet case

Smartish cases.

Smartish's affordable, simple, slim cases and wallet cases return for the iPhone 12. The Wallet Slayer 2.0 case (pictured on left and right) costs a little more now ($30) but comes in a variety of designs. It holds three credit cards plus cash and you can use one of your credit cards as a kickstand.

smartish-iphone-12

Slick leather option

Torro cases.

UK-based Torro makes some nice leather-clad cases that aren't too expensive (a leather case typically tends to cost over $50). The Torro Leather Bumper ($38) is a pretty straightforward bumper case with a leather back. It's one of the better leather cases you'll find for the money. The case is available in multiple colors.

torro-iphone-12-cases

Clean look, lanyard-friendly

Catalyst vibe and influence.

Like Lifeproof, Catalyst made a name for itself with waterproof cases, but it now focuses on standard protective case options and has two new models for the iPhone 12: the Vibe (left) and the Influence (right), which has a see-through frosted back. Both cases have perforations on the corners that allow you to attach various accessories (sold separately), such as lanyards and carabiners. The Vibe is rated for 10-foot drop protection while the Influence is rated for 15 feet.

catalyst-iphone-12

Swanky leather

Nomad cases.

Nomad makes a line of nice iPhone 12 Horween leather case styles that are designed to develop a "rugged" patina as the oils from your skin interact with them over time. The new Rugged leather case options are available in black, brown and a lighter natural color that I like. They're rated for 10-foot (3-meter) drop protection.

Affordable crossbody wallet case

Smartish crossbody case.

I'm personally not a crossbody case guy (meaning a case with a long strap so you can wear your phone like a purse), but some people love them. You can find some fancy ones out there that cost a lot of money, but if you're looking for something simpler, the Smartish Crossbody case is around $30 and comes in multiple colors. The iPhone case design incorporates some faux leather and the case offers decent protection along with three slots for storing up to five credit cards and cash in the wallet compartment. You can choose to go with a shorter hand strap or the longer adjustable crossbody strap.

Old favorite

Incipio cases.

Incipio has an assortment of cases for the iPhone 12 lineup, including the sturdy Duo with 12-foot drop protection, the Slim, the Grip and the Organicore, an eco case that's 100% compostable. All are available in multiple color options, and the Slim comes in a variety of translucent options.

Eco-friendly clear case

Nimble disc case.

You know all those compact discs you no longer listen to? Well, Nimble makes translucent iPhone cases out of them. They have antimicrobial protection, are scratch-resistant and aren't supposed to turn yellow over time. While the Disc Case is slim, it's rated for 6-foot drop protection.

Flashy design

Case-mate cases.

Case-Mate makes a variety of color cases, some of which have glitter integrated into their translucent designs. I only got a look at the twinkle ombre iPhone case, but the iridescent soap bubble and tough groove cases also look cool.

Best selfie case

Halo lumee x paris hilton.

If selfies are your thing, then you're probably aware of the LuMee cases that have built-in lighting. This Paris Hilton-endorsed Holographic version has an iridescent design. It charges via USB-C and gives you 30 minutes of "studio lighting" at full brightness. The case does allow wireless charging and you can adjust the brightness levels of the light.

Refined brute

Pelican cases.

I wasn't a fan of earlier Pelican cases, which were very protective but just a little too bulky (and ugly), but in the last couple of years (starting with the iPhone 11), the company, now owned by Case-mate, added some slimmer designs, including two that I like: the Protector (pictured, middle in camo color) and the Rogue (at left and right), which has a soft rubber bubbled pattern.

Best case for add-on lenses

Moment cases.

Apple upgraded the cameras in its iPhone 12 models, with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max offering step-up camera options (the iPhone Max is the best in the imaging department). But a select few accessory makers like Moment allow you to enhance your shooting with add-on lenses and filters. Sold separately from the case, the lenses aren't cheap, but they are high-quality.

Moment's iPhone cases include an insertable mount that can be removed when you're not playing around with any optional lenses, which are easy to attach. Its Thin Case is a simple but attractive rubberized case made of compostable bioplastic that's rated for 6-foot drop protection. Cases with wood and canvas on their backs are also available.

Best gaming case

Razer arctech pro.

Razer, which makes laptops and gaming accessories (among other products), also makes iPhone "gaming" cases. They have something called Thermaphene-Based Heat Dissipation that "redirects trapped heat through a thermally conductive lining adjacent to vented airflow channels to significantly improve cooling compared with traditional cases." It's a bit of a gimmick, but it seems to help a little when you're playing graphics-intensive games for long periods.

Razer had a slim Arctech case for the iPhone 11, but right now it only has the Arctech Pro for the iPhone 12 and 13 models. It was redesigned from the previous year's Arctech Pro -- it seems even more protective -- and adds an antibacterial coating.

Best case for festival lovers

Wildflower x coachella case.

Showcase your love for music festivals with the Wildflower x Coachella iPhone 12 phone case collaboration. I love the fun design of the case, which includes palm trees, flowers and the iconic Coachella ferris wheel. The case itself is decent quality and offers a medium level of protection for your phone without being too bulky.

Classy slim cases

Moshi cases.

I've always liked Moshi cases and the company's made versions of its iGlaze, Altra and Vitros cases (pictured from left to right) for the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max. The Altra is the most distinct-looking and has a geometric rubber finish that makes your phone nice and grippy. It also includes a lanyard. Not pictured is the Overture (coming soon), a two-in-one folio wallet case. You fit your iPhone into a slim shell case that then magnetically adheres to the cover, which has slots for storing credit cards and cash. Moshi's cases range in price from $35 to $50.

Cheap clear case [Out of stock]

Youmaker clear case.

There are plenty of inexpensive clear cases and iPhone 12 accessories on Amazon. It seems to be a perfectly good clear case that offers decent protection with raised edges. Whether it will yellow over time, I can't tell you, but it seems like a good value.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

iphone 12 travel case

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.
