Arizona is a desert state with a rich history of off-road exploration. There are countless trails to choose from, ranging from easy to difficult. Here are 10 of the best Jeep trails in Arizona:

Broken Arrow Trail: This moderate trail is located in the Coconino National Forest and offers stunning views of Sedona. The trail is 18 miles long and features a variety of obstacles, including rocks, sand, and washes.

Schnebly Hill Road: This easy trail is located in the Sedona area and is a great way to get started with off-roading. The trail is 6 miles long and winds its way through a scenic canyon.

Four Peaks OHV Area: This large OHV area is located near Phoenix and offers a variety of trails for all skill levels. The area is home to the famous “Pinnacles” trail, which is a challenging 4-mile trail with steep climbs and descents.

The Backway to Crown King: This difficult trail is located in the Bradshaw Mountains and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The trail is 24 miles long and is only recommended for experienced off-roaders.

White Pocket: This moderate trail is located in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument and is known for its otherworldly rock formations. The trail is 10 miles long and is best explored with a high-clearance vehicle.

Agua Fria National Monument: This national monument is home to a variety of off-road trails, ranging from easy to difficult. The most popular trail is the “Old Spanish Trail,” which is a 12-mile trail that winds its way through a scenic canyon.

Bulldog Canyon: This OHV area is located near Phoenix and offers a variety of trails for all skill levels. The area is home to the “Hammerhead” trail, which is a challenging 4-mile trail with steep climbs and descents.

Mogollon Rim: This scenic rim offers stunning views of the Mogollon Mountains and is a great place to go for a scenic drive or hike. There are also a few off-road trails in the area, such as the “Forest Road 300,” which is a 12-mile trail that winds its way through the forest.

Chiricahua National Monument: This national monument is home to a variety of geological features, including hoodoos, spires, and balanced rocks. There are also a few off-road trails in the area, such as the “Echo Canyon Trail,” which is a 10-mile trail that winds its way through a scenic canyon.

Montezuma Castle National Monument: This national monument is home to a cliff dwelling that was built by the Sinagua people over 700 years ago. There is an easy trail that leads to the base of the cliff dwelling, but off-road vehicles are not allowed in the monument.

On our guide-led Sonoran Desert Jeep tours, you will see and learn about the stunning scenery that you saw in the popular old Western movies stretched out around you in full-color panoramic views.

Where will you be going? We are permitted to operate our off-road vehicle tours in the Sonoran Desert portion of the scenic Tonto National Forest adjacent to the northeast border of Scottsdale, Arizona. Since our tours are entirely on federal lands where development is prohibited, you will have the opportunity to see the desert as local Native Americans experienced it for hundreds of years before the Valley was settled in the late 1800s.

Whether you are here on vacation, a corporate event, for a bachelorette party, or any other occasion, our fleet of open-air vehicles are modified to carry 6, 7, or 14 passengers each. We can accommodate groups of all sizes for any occasion. For groups of 50 guests or more, please call our office.

2-hour Guide-Led, Sunset Sonoran Desert Jeep Tour

Experience a world-famous Arizona sunset (weather dependent) on our low-speed, bumpy sightseeing tour of the scenic Sonoran Desert via the Tonto National Forest. Your professional tour guide, a certified off-road driver, and the only driver throughout your Jeep tour, will teach you about the Sonoran Desert flora, wildlife, Arizona history, and Native American ethnobotanical practices that helped tribes thrive in the desert for hundreds of years. Your tour guide will take you through stunning scenery on trails that you would otherwise not be able to reach in your rental vehicle.

At sunset, we stop at our panoramic lookout point that overlooks the historic Great Western Trail. Here guests can exit the vehicle and walk around the scenic lookout. Whether you are interested in a couple group photos, or a full Instagram shot with your camera, our tour guides are also great photographers who know where to take the best photos with ideal lighting.

Depending on cloud conditions, the sky typically changes to various shades of pink, red, orange, and purple, all with the backdrop of the stunning Sonoran Desert.

WHAT TO WEAR

Closed-toe shoes are required for when we venture out on foot at our designated stopping points. During the fall and winter months, be sure to bring a jacket. Temperatures in the desert drop ~30 degrees after sunset. We recommend wearing comfortable outdoor clothing that will show up well in your photographs (there will be plenty!)

Scottsdale Adventure Tours is a special recreation permit-holder through the U.S. Department of Agriculture: Cave Creek Ranger District and the U.S. Department of the Interior: Bureau of Land Management. Our Scottsdale departure off-road tours occur northwest of Rio Verde, northeast of Scottsdale, west of the Verde River, and southeast of Cave Creek. Our Table Mesa off-road tours occur northwest of New River and southwest of Black Canyon City.

Note: Our open-air off-road vehicles ensure full ventilation throughout our adventure tours.

Health restrictions: Off-road Jeep tours are rough, bumpy rides through rigorous terrain. Our off-road Jeep tours are not suitable for guests with back problems, neck problems, motion sickness, pregnancy, major medical conditions, or any other health condition that can be aggravated by a bumpy ride through rough terrain. Drive to the Mogollon Rim overlook for breathtaking views all the way to Four Peaks. Amazing excursion down one of the most scenic lookout roads in Arizona – Rim Road. Stop offs at Woods Canyon Lake, stunning rock formations, ancient trees and the chance to see Arizona wildlife in their native habitat. Adding some challenge and seclusion to the well-traveled forest road, the Promontory 4x4 spur trail out onto beautiful Promontory Butte offers a tremendous overlook off the Mogollon Rim.

Jump back in for a rough and rocky ride through rustic Mead Ranch to visit Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery. My wife and I had a Fantastic Creekside Jeep Tour recently. We were in the brand new 11 passenger vehicle!! We toured the forest and mountains surrounding Christopher Creek. We made several interesting and beautiful stops along the route. The guide was very informative and interesting as well. My Husband and I recently took this tour and highly recommend it. Our tour guide Lisa was wonderful. We had a great time and learned so much about the area. We visited the hatchery that has recently reopened, We hiked to a Beautiful waterfall, and she showed us many spectacular views for Photo Ops. This tour did not disappoint!

My family and I are from Phoenix and we spent this weekend camping, hiking, swimming, exploring here in Payson and this was our favorite part of the trip. Jeff Curl made the booking quick and easy. Welcome (Yá'át'ééh) to AZ Canyon Jeep Tours Website!

My name is Deswood Yazzie and I am the owner of AZ Canyon Jeep Tour. I am a full blooded Navajo (Diné) born and raised in the canyon. I have been a guide for 30 years plus. I grew up learning the Diné (Holy People) way. We have struggled hard since coming and as of today we continue to struggle.

The canyon we call Tseyi (Canyon de Chelly) is referred to by our Navajo Elders as “a place within the rock.” Canyon de Chelly embraces the history of the human spirit, a place of refuge, a source of strength, protection and peace.

Our tours will take your back to Anasazi times. The Anasazi's were the first early people of the canyon. They inhabited the canyon from 2500 B.C.E. to 1300 A.D. Around the 1200’s they migrated from the canyon; throughout the southwest they left behind dwellings, handmade tools and wares.

After the Anasazi migrated from Canyon de Chelly the Hopi's arrived and utilized the canyon for ceremonial purposes, cultivating and other uses. It was the Hopi’s that planted the thousands of peach trees that were destroyed by the U.S. Calvary along with Colonel Kit Carson and William T. Sherman during a “Scorched Earth” Campaign.

During your tour we will learn about the people and the events that went on in Canyon de Chelly. We will view the ruins of the early people, and admire their beautiful artwork in the forms of pictographs and petroglyphs, all created by the early people, which included the Hopi and the Navajo people.

Available Tours:

➤ 3 hour tour (most popular).

This tour will take you into Canyon de Chelly , where the first stop is Kokopelli Cave. We will then continue on to:

• Petroglyph Rock
• First Ruins
• Junction Ruins
• From there we will go to the South Canyon and visit White House Ruins (Restrooms available and vendors are selling jewelry, arts and crafts)

… then back to the Junction and up the North Canyon to continue on to:

• Bare Trails Ruins
• Round Corner Ruins
• Ledge Ruins (Restrooms Available)
• Our final stop will be Antelope House Ruins (Concession stands, along with Native Arts and Crafts, and restrooms are available)

➤ 4 Hour Tour

This tour is the same as the 3 Hour Tour, but we will continue past Antelope House to:

• Standing Cow Ruins. There you will see the Spanish Mural Panel.
• Along the way you will see Navaho Fortress Rock This is where the Navajo (Diné) took refuge from the Spanish soldiers and the U.S. Calvary. This is where you will also see the entrance to Black Rock Canyon.

➤ 6 Hour Tour

This tour is the same as the 4 Hour Tour, but we will journey all the way to:

• Mummy Cave Ruins then back South Canyon to continue on to…
• White House Ruins (or vise verse with Spider Rock)
• Spider Rock
• Then to North Canyon’s Antelope House Ruins

Yes, our jeeps are temperature controlled with heat and air.

4 adults and 2 small children (small 3rd row seating). Seats are custom for Jeep Wrangler.

All tours must be cancelled prior to 48 hours of scheduled departure time for a refund. 

Cancellations  48 hours or less  of scheduled departure time will not be refunded. We will do our best to reschedule your tour if desired. 

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to scheduled tour. No refund will be granted for late arrivals or no shows. We will attempt to reschedule you. Thank you.

We had an awesome tour with Matt. Soldier's Pass was amazing with so much history behind it. We especially enjoyed climbing straight up the rock to see Devil's Kitchen and the Seven Pools. Matt knew everything about the whole area and the rock formations up above. If you are thinking of booking a tour, be sure to use Red Rock and ask for Matt as no one else could have done it better.

Took a Red Rocks Jeep Tour with “Little Deb” this afternoon! The scenery was awesome and she told some very good stories. Her family is 5th generation Arizonans and she is an authentic pioneer. We were whisked through town and then into the backcountry where the red rocks rose to the sky!! I loved the ride and the commentary! Hopped into her Jeep as she was the only woman guide. I loved hearing her perspective! Worth the money, highly recommend.

We booked a tour for the first afternoon/evening we were in Sedona and this excursion did not disappoint! The Canyons and Cowboys Tour was a fun introduction and history lesson to the beauty of Sedona! One of the best parts of our tour was our fantastic guide, Tim. He not only filled us in on the history of where we were but made us laugh and have a great time. Book this, you won’t be disappointed!

From the moment we walked into the office the staff were open and friendly. Our driver "Zane" was an interesting guy and told us a lot about the area as well as the geography and local plant life. We stopped at a couple of places where we could walk around and he offered to help us with pictures. On the drive back he also helped us plan the rest of our time in Sedona by giving some great suggestions for places to see before we left.
