There are few stars who could announce 110 arena shows across the UK and near sell most of them out within hours. But then there are few stars quite like Peter Kay .

The Bolton comedy legend will start his mammoth three-year tour right here on home turf in Manchester on Friday night at the AO Arena , swiftly followed by Saturday night at the venue too. It will bring together thousands of comedy fans to witness the Phoenix Nights funnyman's full return to stand-up comedy for the first new tour in 12 years.

Naturally, when the tour was announced , it sent fans into a frenzy. Not least in the rather surprise fashion it came with Peter making an appearance in the adverts of I'm a Celebrity....Get Me Out of Here on ITV.

The tour announcement sparked an unprecedented clamour for tickets when the inital 22 tour dates first went on sale. New date after new date was added to try to cope with demand - and now Peter will play an incredible 110 live shows in total across 2022, 2023, 2024 and right into 2025.

An apology has been isused to Peter Kay fans as many missed out on tickets for his 2023 tour

Peter said after announcing the tour: "It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now." And after seeeing the demand for the shows, admitted he was " blown away " by the fan reaction.

Peter’s 2010 tour still officially ranks with the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time which played to over 1.2m people. He delighted fans when he announced that his new "Better Late Than Never" tour would be sold at the same price as that 2010 tour - with tickets from £35.

He was due to play a 100-gig nationwide comeback tour in 2018 - but only weeks later announced it was off due to "unforeseen family circumstances". So there's huge anticipation for these comeback shows.

Here's more info if you're heading along to the tour.

What time will Peter Kay be on stage?

For the Manchester AO Arena concerts, it has been announced that doors will open from 6pm . Fans are encouraged to get inside the arena as quickly as possible with the live show starting at " 8pm prompt ".

On opening night on Friday, Peter arrived on stage just after 8pm, and there was a 25 minute interval starting just before 9pm. The show finished at 10.30pm.

Times here are only a guide, and audiences should be aware timings are always subject to change - the best advice is always to get in as early as possible to find your seat.

What to expect from the new tour

As to what to expect from the new tour? On opening night TWO standing ovations from fans may give you some idea what you're in store for - a real treat.

There were nods to Peter's famous quips from the past as well as loads of new material - and a simply dazzling finale with some brilliant unexpected moments. You can read our full review of the show here.

Are tickets still available?

The two opening nights in Manchester sold out within minutes of going on sale - as did many, many others of the eventual 110 dates added over the next three years.

But there is still some availability for shows towards the end of the run in 2025. You can find all the ticket links and full list of tour dates in our most recent articles here .

Is there parking at the AO Arena?

Yes, there is a large multi-storey car park based next to the AO Arena, with access through the car park to the main entrance of the venue. Be aware though that after the shows, Trinity Way will be closed southbound between Great Ducie Street and Cheetham Hill Road for up to one hour, to allow concert-goers to safely exit the venue.

If you’re parking at the arena car park, you will still be allowed to exit during this closure but you will have to turn right and follow local diversions.

There are some 7,000 parking spaces at car parks within a short walk to the arena as well.

What are the public transport options?

The AO Arena is within the Manchester Victoria Train Station complex, which serves both mainline trains and a tram stop.

Comedy legend Peter Kay has been away a long time.

Many even questioned if he could recapture the magic from his earlier career but Vanessa Sims, editor of the Lancashire Post and Blackpool Gazette can confirm he DEFINITELY can...

As I made the descent (in the dark) down the million steps from the concourse to the floor of the arena - the sheer scale of the task facing Peter Kay was laid out for all to see.

Not only did he have to make 21,000 people laugh but keep them with him for his two hour show. A tall order for even a seasoned pro.

As I made my way to my seat, I was relieved I had not arrived a few minutes later as Kay took to the stage with a camera and was honing in on the crowd still trying to get to their seats.

It was immediately clear he is literally half the man he used to be.

In fact, I think he even sounds a bit different, if that's possible?

But he still has that special recipe of Kay magic.

He started off the show with a round of 'remember that advert' - which was an instant crowd pleaser.

He even paid reference to the former jingle of Lancashire business Charnock Richard Cycles.

Belting out the Chorley's business' instantly recognisable jingle 'Get yourself to down to Charnock Richard Cycles' accompanied by the crowd - Kay had the room in stitches.

He even went on to describe how he visited Charnock Richard Cycles to buy a bike for his son - but said they were too pedantic over all the extra things the bike could do - when he simply wanted a bike.

He then advised the 21,000 people in the audience 'Don't shop at Charnock Richard Cycles'.

Bolton-born Kay is 10 months into a two-and-a-half year arena tour boasting 110 dates.

The show had everything you could want... laughter, tears, music, crowd interaction and a special guest.

Kay's extra special ability to be able to turn the everyday mundane into laugh-out-loud comedy is still at the forefront of his show.

And I've got to give it to him - the show was worth every penny of the £75 ticket price.

As the majority of the crowd settled down to watch the Phoenix Nights star with a two pint special for the extortionate price of £16.95 - he even paid reference to the 'great offer' on the drinks tonight while pulling one of his famous faces.

I'm conscious the tour still has 18 months to go and I don't want to give away his act - but I can't not mention the special guest who appeared in Manchester.

Oasis legend Noel Gallagher took to the spade to jam on stage with the comedy icon.

The crowd went wild to see a fellow Mancunian - who initially they thought was Kay, sporting a mask of Kay, to then remove it to reveal one of Noel Gallagher, before finally revealing himself.

It added a little extra something despite Gallagher not even speaking.

For all those who have tickets to the upcoming gigs - you're in for a treat!

And to Peter Kay - we're so glad you're back - don't leave it as long next time!

'Peter Kay's comeback tour was beyond incredible and featured megastar guest'

Peter Kay disappeared for many years but fans were still eager to catch him on his recent tour, which is why it probably sold out so quickly and there's one reason, writes Daniel Bird

Peter Kay's show at Manchester's AO Arena was one of the best

  • 19:26, 13 Dec 2023

Stand-up comedy in front of a live audience must be difficult but in front of 23,000 people, it must be tough for even the most experienced.

But Peter Kay seemed to be at ease following his recent residency in his hometown at Manchester's AO Arena in the city centre. The comedy legend has already performed eight sold-out shows at the arena and has even more to come in the new year.

In total, Peter is performing 46 shows across his tour which, due to popular demand has had to be split over 2023, 2024 and 2025. It comes as no surprise that the vast majority of these are, of course, in Manchester.

Upon announcing his comeback tour, the legend said: "It's good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there's ever a time people need a laugh it's now," before adding that he was blown away due to the response he received from the public. But what made it so good? Besides the fact he is an utter genius in comedy, Peter made the audience feel as though they were watching him in their local pub.

It didn't matter that he was performing at the UK's biggest indoor arena, with ease, he commanded the stage and had everybody in fits of laughter. Throughout the show, he spotted people from the audience and got them involved with his jokes but we were safely tucked away in the Virgin Red Room so we were safe.

Discussing growing up in Manchester, Peter recalled only having several channels on his TV, saying: "We had BBC One, BBC Two, ITV and ITV2 but there were no Love Island then, Channel 4 was just a star." He even went on to recall a story when he discovered Eric Clapton was a fan of his and once invited him to his house in the South of France, much to his shock.

But it wasn't just comedy that fans were treated to, Peter took to the stage and belted out his own rendition of several classic songs for fans, albeit using a spade instead of a guitar. However, one thing we didn't expect was an unexpected cameo from Oasis legend Noel Gallagher.

It's safe to say that Peter Kay certainly didn't disappoint and there is a reason why he's still one of the most in-demand comics. His show was everything and more.

Although fans were able to purchase tickets, those who use Virgin Red were able to exchange points on their account for tickets to events while sitting in the lavish suite at the arena. But this isn't all, to make the most of a trip to Manchester's AO Arena with Virgin Red, you can even use points for hotels, train tickets and experience days including iFly based at Trafford Park.

Peter Kay at the O2 Arena review: delivered in spades

noel gallagher peter kay tour 2023

Sub-zero temperatures and rail strikes were never going to keep Peter Kay ’s fans away from the 02 Arena. They had anticipated his appearance for five years, when his last tour was cancelled for private reasons. So was the Better Late Than Never show worth the wait ? It was touch and go but eventually it delivered in spades.

Kay has lost some weight, but has hardly reinvented himself for his epic tour, which includes groundbreaking monthly gigs here until 2025. His material still trades heavily on shameless nostalgia. The bulk of his audience looked well over 30 and you might need to be almost twice that age to recognise some of his references.

But there were plenty who clearly did as the first half moved quickly from Christmas Cracker one liners – “karajoke” – to a TV advert singalong. If Kay hasn’t arranged a sponsorship deal or at least substantial free samples of Club biscuits, Mars bars or Fairy Liquid he is missing a trick.

And naturally there were his catchphrases. He can no longer buy garlic bread in Morrisons, he said, because asking for it makes everyone laugh. He claimed that he only appeared in a Doctor Who episode so that he could make a joke about “Dalek Bread”.

Elsewhere he compared the past to the present. Blockbuster Video to Netflix, chunky mail order catalogues to Amazon. No book token prizes for guessing which ones he prefers.

One change to Kay was that even he now talks about his mental health, albeit lightly. He explained that his OCD means he has to eat every baked bean in the can and puts tape around hotel door frames so keep light out. The latter led into a stand-out anecdote about a family trip to New York dominated by a search for an English cuppa.

Now that Kay is 49 and genuinely middle aged rather than prematurely middle aged there was the inevitable routine about intimate medical examinations. His account of being treated for kidney stones had the entire male contingent laughing and wincing simultaneously. My legs remained firmly crossed throughout.

A vein of sentimentality ran through the show too, most notably when he talked about his late grandmother. Kay took a break from the relatable quips to play a recording of their conversation about her funeral plans while a montage upped mushiness levels to new heights.

And then suddenly he was gone, before returning and asking everyone to keep his spectacular encore secret. Let’s just say it was not strictly comedy but as it shovelled surprise on surprise it certainly put smiles on everyone’s faces.

Next show January 21, then one monthly until April 2025; theo2.co.uk

Peter Kay ’s fans think he looks ‘unrecognisable’ in a new video.

The comedian, 49, was seen in a clip filmed earlier this month with musician Bryan Edery when the latter posted a backstage video captured after one of Peter’s gigs.

In the footage, shared on Instagram and taken at London ’s O2 arena, Peter wore a black tracksuit and quipped that he was about to eat ‘two lamb bhunas’.

Bryan captioned his post: ‘I was fortunate enough to be invited by my good friends to see Peter Kay’s amazing show at the O2 .

‘And then very lucky to meet the man himself backstage. Go and see Peter’s show, it’s incredible.’

It didn’t take long for Bryan’s followers to comment on Peter’s appearance, with one person writing: ‘Bloody hell what happened? Didn’t recognise him.’

Another social media user penned: ‘Wow that’s some mega weight loss Peter lad.’

Someone else added: ‘He looks much healthier than he’s ever looked,’ and another person echoed: ‘He looks as fit as a fiddle and very healthy.’

‘I wouldn’t have recognised him,’ chimed in another Instagrammer.

Back in November, Peter confirmed that he’d be embarking on his first stand-up tour in 12 years .

'The Jonathan Ross Show', London, UK - 18 Nov 2017

‘It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now,’ the funnyman said at the time.

‘And with the  cost of living  at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.’Confirmation of his 2023 tour came after Peter  took a break from the limelight  in 2017 and cancelled his nationwide tour, citing family circumstances as the reason at the time.

He has since started slowly returning to public life with various surprise performances and charity events,  recently delighting fans at the Dance For Life show in Liverpool  for Cancer Research in August.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Peter’s reps for comment.

Peter Kay fans divided after 'heckler' halts M&S Bank Arena show

The comedian has split fans' opinions after he joked with an apparent heckler

Peter Kay at the first night of his first tour in 12 years in Manchester

Fans of Peter Kay have been left divided after the stand-up comedian allegedly evicted one man from his show at the M&S Bank Arena last night.

Fans shared clips and opinions on social media as the Bolton-born comedian made his long-awaited return to the stage for his comeback arena tour. The 49-year-old hadn't hit the road for 12 years before his much-anticipated return at the end of 2022.

Peter Kay was moved to tears on his first appearance on stage before announcing more dates on the tour at the beginning of last month, with the comic playing the arena on Friday, January 6, and Saturday, January 7.

As people raved about how good the show was on social media, some found it difficult to move past the ejection of one fan who was in the seats on the ground floor in front of the stage. In videos seen by the ECHO, Peter Kay is sat on the stage joking about the supposed heckler being taken out of the gig.

He said: "Oh, it's all kicking off here. Where's my phone? He's a bit of an a******e, he's a bit annoying.

"I like a laugh, I'm a comedian but I can tell all them people round there are getting a bit nowty now. He likes the limelight, I know I do but I'm on stage."

Sue Lindsay said on Twitter: "@peterkay_co_uk absolutely top entertainment at the M&S Bank Arena last night. Expert way of dealing with a k***head heckler as well, think 13,000 people were glad to see him escorted out."

Kieran Hodge thought it was an overreaction. He wrote: "@peterkay_co_uk first half [was] funny tonight until you decided to throw that feller out for asking for an autograph, doesn't look good mate I thought you was one of us."

Although Jake Highes backed the comedian up. He replied: "Think there was more to it than that, everyone around him seemed p****d off."

Sally Marston tweeted: "@peterkay_co_uk Saw you tonight [at the] @MandSBankArena & I can honestly say, I laughed, cried & felt every emotion possible.

"You are so talented & so glad you got rid of the heckler. Please continue being you."

Peter Kay brought to tears on opening night of comeback tour

Comedian appeared overwhelmed by reception as he took to stage at start of first comedy tour in 12 years

  • Peter Kay review – from tried and tested everyman routine to jaw-dropping pageant

Peter Kay was moved to tears on the opening night of his first live comedy tour in 12 years.

The comedian received a rapturous standing ovation that lasted several minutes, with audiences chanting his name, as he took to the stage on Friday.

He appeared overwhelmed by the reaction, pausing to lean against a stool on stage before standing up and dabbing his eyes.

“Oh Jesus look at me, I mean what’s that all about? … how am I supposed to do bloody comedy now?” he asked audiences, prompting the first laughs of the evening.

He reportedly added: “Lovely Manchester you made me cry … where did it come from, all that emotion?”

The two-hour show included Kay’s famous garlic bread routine, which was given an Italian makeover, and jokes about modern technology (“What did we do before Amazon? Catalogues!”).

The live tour marks Kay’s return to standup comedy after being largely absent from the public eye for the last four years.

Friday’s show at the Manchester AO Arena is the first in a mammoth arena tour spanning from December to August 2023.

He is due to visit locations including Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield, Belfast, Newcastle, Glasgow and Dublin, with the run ending on 11 August 2023 at the Sheffield Utilita Arena.

Following the announcement, Kay’s official website appeared to crash briefly under increased online traffic.

The live tour is the comedian’s first since 2010, when he scored the Guinness world record for the biggest selling run of all time, playing to more than 1.2 million people.

Kay, from Bolton, has been largely out of the spotlight in recent years.

He returned to the stage in August 2021 for two special charity events to raise money for Laura Nuttall, a then 20-year-old with an aggressive type of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme.

There was also a brief return in January 2021 when he appeared on BBC Radio 2 to chat to Cat Deeley – who was filling in after Graham Norton left the station – about his love of music, mixtapes and the musical Mamma Mia!

He also made a surprise appearance at a charity screening of his series Car Share in 2018.

Kay cancelled his last tour in December 2017, citing “unforeseen family circumstances”.

Over the past few years, Kay has delighted fans with his hit Bafta-winning TV series Car Share and standup routines.

Noel Gallagher 'shows no signs of healing his decades long rift with brother Liam as he enjoys nights out with the Oasis star's nemesis'

Noel Gallagher is showing no sign of squashing the feud with his brother Liam, as he's reportedly formed a surprise friendship with Peter Kay .

The former Oasis singer, 55, has allegedly become close with the comedian, 49, who famously called Liam, 50, a 'k**bhead' at the 2010 BRIT Awards .

Having attended the funnyman's recent Manchester gig, it has been claimed Noel hit it off with Liam's nemesis Peter after they met backstage.

A source told The Sun : 'Noel went to Peter's Manchester gig last week and they met backstage and got on like a house on fire.

'They spent time together after the show and it was a great laugh. Peter is a huge fan of Noel's and it was a pleasure for him to welcome him.

'Noel surprised some of the crowd at the arena who had no idea he'd be making an appearance.'

MailOnline has contacted Noel and Peter's representatives for comment.

Peter's feud with Liam stems from an on-stage encounter at the BRITs.

Picking up the gong for Best Album of 30 Years for the 1995 record (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, the Oasis star swore his way through his acceptance speech, before hurling his microphone and award into the audience.

Making his acceptance speech, the frontman thanked the early members of the band, with the exception of older brother Noel, who walked out on the group last summer.

Arriving alone on stage, he yelled into the microphone: 'Listen kids. I want to thank Bonehead, Guigsy and Alan White. The best band in the f**king world. Live forever.'

It was after he threw his microphone and award into the crowd and sulked off the stage, Peter remarked: 'What a k**bhead.'

A furious Liam later tweeted: 'Listen up fat f**k as a real northerner I was brought up 2 say s**t 2 people's faces not behind their back. Live forever LG.'

Peter wrote on his website the next day: 'So it was the Brits last night and I was honoured to be asked to host the show, especially with it being 30 years old.

'Congratulations to all the winners, including Noel Gallagher, who sadly didn't get a mention (and who thankfully isn't a k***head).'

More recently, Liam proved the quarrel was still ongoing when asked if he would be attending one of Peter's comeback gigs, saying, 'F*** him the balloon knot.'
