Starting 1 December 2023, every tour at Hobbiton Movie Set will feature a special experience inside a Hobbit Hole™, meticulously created by the same talented teams that worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Situated in Bagshot Row™, these Hobbit Holes provide a genuine look into the quaint homes of Hobbits as they go about their everyday life in the Shire™.

As you explore, duck your head while navigating the labyrinth of rooms and corridors, all built to accommodate a Hobbit's size. Marvel at the walls, adorned with intricate hand-painted details and carvings, a testament to meticulous craftsmanship. The interiors are further enhanced with vibrant, hand-sewn linens and various ornamental touches.

Discover traces of the Hobbits' ancestral history, with family heirlooms and keepsakes from past generations scattered around. Peek into a pantry brimming with supplies for their seven daily meals, and experience the warmth of a lively hearth, offering a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of these charming beings.

The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour is an essential stop on the itinerary of all visitors to New Zealand that are travelling between Auckland and Rotorua, where you can experience the real Middle Earth. This tour offers an interesting and entertaining experience including the famous Hobbiton film set used by Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Your tour commences with a picturesque drive through a 1,250 acre working sheep farm, with 13,000 sheep and 300 beef cattle, and spectacular views of the Kaimai Ranges.

On arrival your tour guide will escort you through the 10 acre site, with fascinating stories of how the Hobbiton Movie Set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth.

Upon completion of your tour of the set you will return to The Shires Rest, with time to bottle feed the pet lambs and visit the Shire Store. 

The tour spends about 1½ hours walking with stops. Total distance walked is about 1½ kms.

Wheel Chair Access at Hobbiton

There is a portion of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour that is not wheelchair accessible. If you book at least 2 weeks in advance, we can offer you a complementary golf cart to take you around the set, so you can see everything.

Tour Reminders

Please arrive at The Shire's Rest ticketing centre or Matamata i-SITE at least 20 minutes prior to your tour's scheduled departure. Remember, this is a guided walking tour, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable.

Make sure your booking covers tickets for every member of your party, including children aged 0-10 years. It's essential that all guests have their tickets arranged before arrival to enable us to accommodate your group effectively.

Hobbiton Movie Set offers an intriguing and exciting experience that includes the iconic film set of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, directed by New Zealander Sir Peter Jackson.

The most renowned was ‘The Shire,’ the home of the courageous hobbits, which attracted visitors from all over the world to see the famed Hobbit holes, as well as the Mill, The Green Dragon Pub, and other landmarks from the films.

Your guided tour begins with a scenic drive through our 1,250-acre working sheep farm with breathtaking views of the Kaimai Ranges. Examine Bag End, the location where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began. Visit the Green Dragon Inn, the mill, and the Party Tree after becoming lost in the hobbit tunnels. You will see how this gorgeous section of Waikato farmland was turned into Middle-The earth’s Shire.

Daily tours depart at the Shires Rest Cafe every half hour between 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. (extended hours in summer). trips lasting around two hours in length. With freshly prepared beverages available at the Green Dragon Inn when you conclude your tour, you can then return to The Shire Store and spend some time there.

Cafe Shires Rest. The Shires Rest Cafe is a calm place to unwind with a nice cup of coffee and an extensive selection of New Zealand cuisine. We are a fully licenced establishment offering a wide variety of New Zealand beers and ciders.

Soak up the atmosphere of the converted woolshed, where you may unwind on the balcony while taking in the most breathtaking views of rural New Zealand.

Hobbiton & Weta Workshop Unleashed Experience

This small group tour visits Hobbiton and Weta Workshop Unleashed. The day includes a guided tour of Hobbiton and lunch at Shires Rest Cafe. We’ll bring back the Party Marquee luncheon in 2022. Then, visit Weta Workshop in Auckland.

From pick-up to drop-off at Unleashed in Auckland, our guides look after you. Full commentary provides background on Hobbiton and Weta Workshop as you travel.

On the road to Hobbiton, we stop at a tiny cafe for a snack or coffee. Then we’ll transport you to Hobbiton, where a guide will show you the 44 Hobbit holes. 

You may take a photo in a Hobbit house entryway, see the Party Tree, and stand by Bilbo’s Bag End gate overlooking the set and hills. Before your featured buffet lunch in the Party Marquee**, enjoy a free ale, cider, or ginger beer in the Green Dragon Inn. 

After lunch, you’ll receive a $10 Hobbiton gift shop certificate before being dropped off to Weta Workshops Unleashed Experience in Auckland.

You get a 90-minute guided tour of three imaginary movie sets, props, and special effects. You can pound out armour, make tinfoil sculptures, operate on an alien species, and wander around a surreal set with a turquoise river floor, castle tunnels, and grass hillsides.

After your Waitomo tour, we drive back to Auckland with a afternoon tea stop (own cost).

Hobbiton Movie Set And Waitomo Caves Tour

This small group excursion visits Hobbiton and Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. The day includes a guided tour of Hobbiton and lunch at Shires Rest Cafe. In 2022, we’ll bring back the Party Marquee lunch buffet. A guided tour of the Waitomo Caves includes a boat ride through the glowworm grotto.

After lunch, you’ll get a $10 Hobbiton souvenir certificate before heading to Waitomo caves. The drive to Waitomo Caves passes Lake Karapiro and Arapuni Dam.

At Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, an experienced guide will show you the limestone structures and glowworms. Take a boat through the glowworm grotto after the cave tour (subject to water levels). Before leaving the cave, admire millions of southern hemisphere light worms.

Depart from Auckland at approximately 6:00am for your drive south over the Bombay Hills to the lush farmland of the Waikato region. Your Bush and Beach guide will talk about the areas you drive through and its history and give you some background to the movies.

Upon arrival at the Hobbiton Movie Set, you and your fellow  Hobbiton  fans have the first tour on set with a Hobbiton guide.

Take plenty of pictures as you pass Bilbo Baggins’ house, the mill, and the party tree, among other recognizable landmarks.

After your guided tour of the movie set you head to an epic second breakfast at The Millhouse. 

The meal which is exclusive to this tour includes morning staples such as scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and fruit, in addition to creamy mushrooms and grilled tomatoes.

Hobbiton Movie Tour Express from Auckland

This small group tour is an easy day trip from Auckland to the Hobbiton film location. The day includes a comprehensive guided tour of the filming location from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies. In addition to a delicious meal at the Shires Rest Cafe, we will reintroduce the lavish noon feast in the Party Marquee later in 2022.

From the time you’re picked up in Auckland City until the time you’re dropped off, our knowledgeable guides are at your service throughout the day. They provide a comprehensive commentary throughout the journey, including information on the areas you are travelling through and the history of the film set you are seeing. 

On the way down to Hobbiton, there is a quick stop at a local café if you would like to purchase some local baked goods or a coffee (or a “second breakfast,” as we like to call it).

At Hobbiton, you travel down to the actual set and are led on a walking tour of the 44 Hobbit holes by one of the specialised Hobbiton guides. 

You will get the opportunity to have your portrait taken in the doorway of a Hobbit house, visit the Party Tree, and stand by the gate to Bilbo’s house, Bag End, with a view of the entire set and the far hills. 

Before your feast in the Party Marquee** (included in the price), you cross the bridge besides the mill and enter the Green Dragon Inn for a complimentary ale, cider, or ginger beer.

Departure point is outside the port main pedestrian gates. Your guide will be standing outside the exit (port gates) on the grass area holding up a sign board with your names on.

Lord of the Rings filming location Matamata, New Zealand.

Departing Tauranga; we first cross the harbour bridge, which offers great views of The Mount, 232m high and marking the entrance to the harbour of Tauranga.

We then climb up to over 1000 feet to cross the Kaimai Mountain Range , which divides the Bay of Plenty coastal region from the Waikato district, the main dairy farming area of New Zealand.

We soon arrive at  Hobbiton ; the movie set location for Lord of The Rings and associated films, near the town of  Matamata . Enjoy an informative 2 hour tour around the movie set location hearing about all which goes on behind the scenes of making such a successful movie. Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Waikato , this location was chosen for its unblemished landscape.

You’ll be able to walk through a fully furnished hobbit hole and through a tunnel to another then out.

You will get to stand under the party tree, walk past the numerous holes within the Shire, and imagine yourself among the characters. Bilbo Baggins was no typical hobbit , he did not want adventure , but you will have to come and see why he was so reluctant to leave the comfort of The Shire .  At the conclusion of your journey you get a special treat in the Green Dragon Inn where you will receive a local shire ale, cider or ginger beer.

On your return journey to the port we will call in at McLaren Falls & Park, which abounds with a diverse range of tree species & bird-life. You now have the opportunity to walk in our native bush to a beautiful waterfall . It’s in the park you will have opportunity to dress up and become your favorite Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit character. This includes Gandalf, cloak, hat, staff and swords.  Maybe Bilbo and the Sting sword appeal to you more than Gandalf and for the ladies Eowyn and her sword.

Now it’s homeward we travel into Tauranga City , and if time permits we will make a quick stop for you to view the local bees and taste New Zealand Manuka honey or try one of their d elicious ice-creams before we head back along the inner harbor past the local fishing boats, over the Harbor bridge along the port back to your ship with plenty of time to spare to enjoy the beach before sailing time.

Once the transport arrives, you will see some fantastic scenery on route to Hobbiton Movie Set . The stunning Waikato farming location provides unimaginable beauty, with fertile pastures, picturesque green countryside and a wealth of miniature village towns holding a heap of history behind them.

Once you have made your journey to Hobbiton , which is set in the idyllic location of Matamata , you will immediately be immersed in a world of fantasy. You will experience iconic views of the distant landscapes lined with sheep and farm life, and in the distance to the East is where the Kaimi Ranges reside. These areas deliver a true insight of where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies came to life, and where they first began.

There will be a solid two hours for guests to experience everything that the Hobbiton Movie set has to offer. The guides will share heaps of facts and secrets on the filming of Peter Jackson’s fantasy movies and the tour will appeal to fans of fantasy as well as those that are less familiar with the movies.

Hailing from Tasmania, The Wolfe Brothers have gained widespread acclaim for their unique blend of country and rock, characterized by catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and exceptional musicianship. Comprising brothers Nick and Tom Wolfe, along with their live band, the group has solidified their place in the Australian music scene, earning multiple awards and accolades. This tour will mark the band’s first ever visit to New Zealand, something the brothers have been wanting to tick off their bucket list for some time:
