Sanford International: What to expect at this year’s golf tournament

Steve Stricker golfing in the Sanford International, a PGA Champions Tour event

By Mick Garry Steve Stricker is the returning champion at the Sanford International and is the only player in this PGA Tour Champions tournament to win it twice.

The 16-time winner on the Champions Tour – who won 12 times on the regular tour – returns as an obvious favorite based on his performances at Minnehaha Country Club , where the best 50-and-over golfers in the world will be competing for a total of $2 million.

His legacy of success travels far beyond the Sanford International, especially the last two seasons. The 56-year-old Wisconsin resident has won an amazing five PGA Tour Champions tournaments during the 2023 season, including three of the tour’s majors.

Since 2000, only Bernhard Langer (seven wins in 2017) and Larry Nelson (six wins in 2000) have won more PGA Tour Champions tournaments in a single season than Stricker, who leads the Tour’s Charles Schwab Cup standings by nearly $2 million with seven tournaments remaining.

No. 2 in Cup standings is Langer, the 66-year-old who won the 2023 U.S. Senior Open this summer for his 46th victory since turning 50. Langer, a member of the Sanford International board and two-time Masters winner, is one of nine of the top 10 in Schwab Cup standings who will be trying slow Stricker down this week at Minnehaha Country Club.

“You look at a guy’s game and if you see that he drives it in the fairway, hits greens and is a good putter – and you don’t many mental mistakes – you're probably going to do OK,” said Andy North, a two-time U.S. Open champion who is a member of the Sanford Health  board of trustees. “That’s how Langer has played for 20 years. Steve is in that same mold. He is going to win a lot more tournaments before he’s done playing. The key is to keep him excited about coming out and playing golf.”

The field will include former Sanford International champions Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Rocco Mediate and multiple-major winners Ernie Els, John Daly, Lee Janzen, José María Olazábal and Retief Goosen.

“The guys really enjoy playing this golf course,” said North, a longtime TV commentator for ESPN. “You have to play a lot of different kinds of shots. It’s kind of like the golf courses that most of these guys grew up playing on tour. It's not one of these 7,800-yard courses where you blast it all over the place. You have to play shots. You have to think your way around this course, something that these guys appreciate as they get older.”

Other highlights include Friday night’s Sanford International Live! Jake Owen Concert at the Sanford Pentagon . Daly, a singer and guitar player in addition to a crowd favorite at the golf course, provides the opening entertainment.

Following Saturday’s second round, the second annual Contest of Champions BBQ presented by the South Dakota Beef Industry Council will take place on the Minnehaha Country Club driving range with live music provided by Jocko Deal.

This year’s free event features five competitors, all smoking brisket for the public to eat and then rate their favorite. The contest is free to attend for all patrons. In addition, the Sanford International will open its gates for free after 4:30 p.m. for anyone in the community who would like to participate in trying and rating the barbecue.

The tournament concludes Sunday with the winner taking home the Sanford International trophy.

General admission concert tickets to Sanford International Live! featuring Jake Owen at the Sanford Pentagon, which include grounds access to the opening round of the Sanford International, are $65. Grounds access tickets, without concert access, for Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Sanford International are $20.

Steve stricker tops robert karlsson in a playoff at 2022 sanford international on eve of presidents cup, share this article.

Robert Karlsson opened with a 62 on Thursday, the best round of the week at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Steve Stricker went 64-64 over the weekend. By late Sunday, the two found themselves tied at 14 under and locking horns in a playoff at the Sanford International.

Karlsson was tied for the lead at 10 under with Jeff Maggert after 36 holes and Sunday, after birdies on Nos. 16 and 17, had a chance to win in regulation with one more birdie but ended up with a par at the last.

Stricker, who won this event in 2018, shot his 17th straight round of par or better and his 12th straight such round at the Sanford on Sunday.

He made quick work of the playoff with a birdie on the first extra hole, the par-4 18th, for his 10th win, and third this season, on the PGA Tour Champions.

“It didn’t break as much in regulation because I was a little bit, I don’t know what happened there, it just kind of rode high. So I had a good feeling for the speed here in the playoff,” he said. “You’re trying to hit a good putt, it’s a tough putt to make, but fortunate that it went in. It was a cool feeling. To make a putt last hole in a playoff in front of all these people is pretty cool.”

Stricker can now turn his sights on Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Presidents Cup, where he will be an assistant captain starting Monday.

Fred Couples, also a 2022 assistant captain, closed his week in Sioux Falls by going backdoor on a closing birdie to shoot a final-round 72.

Couples joins Stricker, Zach Johnson and first-timer Webb Simpson as assistants alongside captain Davis Love III at the Presidents Cup. Couples tied for 38th.

Charles Schwab Cup points leader Steve Alker finished for tied for 58th after a final-round 76.

Colin Montgomerie withdrew from the Sanford before the start of the second round. John Daly withdrew during the second round.

Share All sharing options for: John Daly’s 5-word reaction to epic, double-eagle round at Sanford International will hype up fans

John Daly, Sanford International

A familiar name lurks at the top of the leaderboard at the Sanford International, the PGA Tour Champions event held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He is a two-time major champion, too.

That would be John Daly , who has not yet recorded a top-10 finish in 2023.

But he has a great chance to do so in South Dakota this weekend.

After his spectacular 6-under 64 Saturday, which featured a pair of eagles, Daly sits at 10-under par, two strokes behind Steve Stricker .

“I play for the fans,” Daly said afterward. “I love them. I’ve always loved them, and hopefully, it’ll be fun tomorrow.”

John Daly, PGA Tour, Champions, Sanford International

The last time Daly finished in the top 10 of a PGA Tour Champions event was in June 2022, when he tied for eighth at the American Family Insurance Championship.

Daly has struggled this season, mainly because of his putting and injuries.

“It was great,” Daly said when asked about his round.

“Made putts the last two days, and I don’t think I made hardly any eagles this year. To have two out there today really helped. Hitting the ball pretty good. Playing smart. Got to make putts. Made a few putts.”

The former Arkansas Razorback eagled the par-5 4th and the par-5 12th, as he made three other birdies to accompany one bogey Saturday.

“Hit driver, 5-iron into four and made a good 25-footer down the hill, and driver 8-iron into 12 and made about a 15-footer, so that helps,” Daly said about his eagles.

Daly had quite the gallery following him Saturday, so those eagles certainly fired up the South Dakota fans.

“They’ve always been great. Everywhere I go, they’re just so supportive,” Daly said.

“It’s just good to finally play a decent tournament so far for them because it’s been a rough year with the knees, shoulders, back, and everything. So it’s just great to be able to follow through again. Starting in Canada was the first time I could follow through in about seven years. I’ve had both knees replaced.

“It just feels good to get through the golf ball again.”

Daly will begin his final round in the penultimate group at 1:10 ET. Robert Karlson and K.J. Choi will join him.

Coverage of the final round of the Sanford International begins on Golf Channel at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Doug Barron wins first PGA Tour Champions major at 2024 Regions Tradition

J ust before the start of the final round of the 2024 Regions Tradition, the first of five majors in 2024 on the PGA Tour Champions schedule, Steve Stricker withdrew from next week's PGA Championship, the second major of the PGA Tour campaign. Stricker was in that field by virtue of his win in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

He's also the two-time defending champion of the Regions Tradition at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama, but a final-round 69 left him short of an eighth Champions tour major.

Sunday started with Doug Barron and Ernie Els, both chasing their first PGA Tour Champins major title, tied for the lead.

While Els could only spin his wheels, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish 14-under, Barron, who said he woke up at four in the morning but sounded like he didn't mean to, took control of the event. He followed his third-round 66 – the best round of the day by three shots – with a bogey-free, final-round 68 to finish 17 under and win his first senior major by two shots.

"Today was just a dream come true, beating all these great players," Barron told Golf Channel on the 18th green minutes after his victory. He was in the final group alongside Els and Padraig Harrington.

Barron, 54, earned $390,000 for the win. The total purse for the tournament was $2.6 million. He now has three victories on the senior circuit.

He praised his putting coach for his success on the greens all week.

"I got one of the best putting lessons from my coach back home last week, and I really got my putter going. I felt like I could make an 8-footer again," he said. "It was huge because I didn't hit any fairways. I hardly missed a fairway coming into today."

Steven Alker was solo second after firing a 9-under 63 on Sunday, the best score of the week by two shots.

Stewart Cink finished tied for third with Stricker and Els. Charlie Wi and K.J. Choi tied for sixth. Bernhard Langer, in his second event back after recovering from Achilles surgery, tied for eighth with Kenny Perry. Padraig Harrington, Brian Gay and Stuart Appleby tied for 10th at 9 under. Harrington was in the final group but posted a final-round 74.

PGA Championship Round 4 live updates, leaderboard: Xander Schauffele beats out Bryson DeChambeau to win at Valhalla

Bryson dechambeau nearly beat out xander schauffele after hitting a clutch birdie putt at the 18th on sunday afternoon at valhalla.

Xander Schauffele, finally, has won a major championship .

Schauffele, thanks to a clutch birdie at the 18th, beat out Bryson DeChambeau to win the PGA Championship on Sunday afternoon at Valhalla . He posted a final-round 65, which moved him to 21-under par for the week and gave him the one-shot win in Louisville. After coming close so many times, he's now won a major championship.

DeChambeau, who was hanging with Schauffele for much of the day, made a huge long birdie putt at the 18th to get to 20-under. That sparked a massive celebration on the final green. He then went immediately to the range to keep working while Schauffele finished his round. DeChambeau's playing partner, Viktor Hovland, had a birdie look to join them in the lead at the 18th, too, but he ended up three-putting for bogey. That earned him a third-place finish at 18-under on the week.

Schauffele, despite having to stand in the bunker to hit his second shot on the final hole, left himself with about a six foot putt for birdie. Though it rolled around the cup, the putt dropped to give him the win .

Thomas Detry finished in fourth at 15-under on the week alongside Colin Morikawa, and Shane Lowry and Justin Rose finished tied for sixth at 14-under.

Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested on Friday morning outside of the course in Louisville, finished at 13-under on the week after he posted a 6-under round to end the tournament.

If you're looking for the leaderboard, click here .

If you're looking for tee times, click here .

And if you're looking for on-course updates ... we've got you covered right here ...

Five winners in five years at the PGA Championship

Schauffele is the fifth different golfer to win the PGA Championship in the past five tournaments since Brooks Koepka went back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. Collin Morikawa won in 2020 — the first major of the year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Phil Mickelson won in 2021, Justin Thomas won in 2022 and Koepka won his third PGA a year ago.

Scottie Scheffler sneaks into the top 10

The top 11 players in the tournament were within eight shots of each other as Scottie Scheffler snuck into a tie for eighth with a 65 on Sunday.

Viktor Hovland finished third three shots back of Schauffele, while Thomas Detry was fourth and three shots back of Hovland. Here's the complete top 10 below.

1. Xander Schauffele, -21

2. Bryson DeChambeau, -20

3. Viktor Hovland, -18

4. Thomas Detry, -15

5. Justin Rose, -14

5. Shane Lowry, -14

5. Collin Morikawa, -14

8. Billy Herschel, -13

8. Scottie Scheffler, -13

8. Justin Thomas, -13

8. Robert MacIntyre, -13

Schauffele quiets the questions about closing tournaments

Xander Schauffele entered the PGA Championship failing to close out two big events earlier this season. He was in the final group at both the Players Championship and the Wells Fargo a week ago and failed to win as Scottie Scheffler took home the title at Sawgrass and Rory McIlroy went nuclear.

Today, he was the closer. He entered with the co-lead at 15-under and shot a 6-under 65 to win by one over Bryson DeChambeau.

Schauffele's 21-under par is the lowest score relative to par in major championship history. He also went wire-to-wire this weekend after shooting a 62 in the first round to open the tournament.

Xander Schauffele wins the PGA Championship

Schauffele gets it to go on the left edge. He's your 2024 PGA Championship winner.

The putt was pretty straight and it hit the left edge of the cup and circled around the back before dropping in.

It's the first major of Schauffele's career.

The putt that made Xander Schauffele a PGA Champion! 🏆 #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/SjBehodFWu — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Schauffele has a makeable birdie putt

Schauffele hits his chip to about 5 or 6 feet. If he makes that birdie putt, he's the 2024 PGA Championship winner.

If he misses and makes par, we've got a three-hole playoff.

Xander was standing so far down in the bunker, and he played his approach perfectly. He'll now have an up-and-down look for a birdie to win this thing from about 35 yards out.

Bryson is in the zone still as he waits for Xander to finish at 18.

Again, here's what the playoff would look like at Valhalla.

In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes, there will be a three-hole aggregate score playoff on holes #13, #17 and #18. If still tied, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff on hole #18, #13, #17 and #18 repeated. #PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Xander Schauffele pars 17

Xander Schauffele just parred No. 17, so he'll head to the 18th tied up with Bryson DeChambeau at 20-under. A birdie or better will win it for him here. If he pars, we're headed to a playoff.

Viktor Hovland misses birdie putt

Viktor Hovland just left his birdie look on the low side of the cup. He'll finish at 18-under on the week, which will be good for a solo-third finish at the PGA Championship.

It's now down to Bryson or Xander.

Bryson DeChambeau matches the lead at 18

Bryson DeChambeau erupts on the final green. He got his final birdie putt to fall, which moves him into a share of the lead at 20-under.

It'll now be up to Xander Schauffele to win this thing down the stretch.

Robert MacIntyre, after barely missing the rare albatross on his approach, just made the second eagle of the day at the 18th. That moved him into the top 10, and under par for his round. The perfect finish that's going to earn him a significant boost in his paycheck this afternoon.

Well, Bryson landed in the fairway bunker and Hovland landed in the first cut on the 18th. Not a great start on a must-have birdie hole for either of them.

Bryson, Hovland head to 18

Bryson DeChambeau missed a good look at birdie at the 17th, so he'll head to the final hole still a shot back of Xander Schauffele. Hovland missed his birdie look, too, which was better than DeChambeau's by far.

The two need to make a move here at the last if they want to win this. Otherwise, Schauffele will need to just hang on.

Justin Thomas' big finish

The Louisville fans showed Justin Thomas plenty of love as he wrapped up his final round at Valhalla.

What a feeling for Justin Thomas to play in front of his home crowd! 🥹 #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/Jhg3PbwWEk — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Leaderboard reset

With Bryson DeChambeau's last birdie at the 16th, here's how things stand late at Valhalla. We're in for a great finish.

1. Xander Schauffele (-20) (13)

T2. Viktor Hovland (-19) (16)

T2. Bryson DeChambeau (-19) (16)

4. Justin Rose (-16) (16)

Bryson throwing darts

Bryson just smashed this one 220 yards, and landed it within about 3 feet after immediately taking off walking. He's looking at another birdie now at the 16th, which would bring him back within one.

Xander back to the solo lead

Another short birdie putt for Xander and he's back to the lead, -20. And the advantage might be a little bigger. He's got more birdieable holes to work with than Hovland and DeChambeau.

HUGE early step. Xander is feeling it. pic.twitter.com/Gmo5Fq30h7 — Fore Play (@ForePlayPod) May 19, 2024

Xander bounces back

Nails by Xander Schauffele, who drained an 8-footer for birdie at 11 to get back into a tie for the lead.

Let's be clear about something here: Yes, Schauffele has been in the lead most of this entire tournament, but he's not giving this thing away. He's 4-under on his round, it's just that Hovland and DeChambeau are charging.

DeChambeau stays in it

Bryson DeChambeau didn't go for it on the short par-4 13th. Instead, he bombed his drive, leaving himself a short pitch that led to a short birdie that led to 18-under, one back of Hovland.

Behind him, though, Schauffele has a good look at birdie on 11.

Hovland to the lead

Viktor Hovland is pouring in birdie after birdie. A curler on 13 is his sixth of the day. That moves him to 19-under, sole possession of the lead.

Xander stumbles

Bryson saves par with a tough up-and-down at 12. Behind him at the par-5 10th, Schauffele found a trap on his drive, rough on his second, pitched over the green to the fringe on his third, pitched short on his fourth, then missed a short putt for par. That's a bit like giving two back on a gettable par 5.

Schauffele and Hovland are now tied at 18-under.

Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa still hasn't found a red figure. Another missed birdie putt at 10 makes it 10 straight pars. That would be great at a U.S. Open, not so much on Sunday at Valhalla.

Hovland to second by himself

Viktor Hovland is not letting Schauffele run away with it. A dart to the green at 12 led to an 8-footer for birdie. He's got it to 18-under, one back of Xander.

Rory in at 12-under

That's it for Rory McIlroy this week. A birdie at 18 moves him to 12-under. It'll be a top-15 finish, likely, but the major-less streak continues.

Leaderboard Update

Now that the final group has made the turn, here’s where things stand at Valhalla.

Leaderboard:

1. Xander Schauffele (-19)

T2. Bryson DeChambeau (-17)

T2. Viktor Hovland

T4. Collin Morikawa (-15)

T4. Justin Rose

T6. Shane Lowry (-14)

T6. Lee Hodges

Xander Schauffele back up by 2

While Collin Morikawa missed, Xander Schauffele was right on target. He sank his fourth birdie of the day at the ninth, which moved him to 19-under and back to a two-shot lead.

Xander Schauffele is playing LIGHTS OUT. He moves to 4-under on the day! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/7LX0xtGKCK — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Playoff Scenarios at Valhalla

If needed, here's how the playoff would go down at Valhalla.

Collin Morikawa misses another birdie

Collin Morikawa had a great look at birdie at the 9th, but he just missed. He'll make the turn at even par for the day, which has him two back of Xander Schauffele. A frustrating start for him for sure.

Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau now 1 back

Xander Schauffele's lead is back to just a single stroke after both Viktor Hovalnd and Bryson DeChambeau birdied the 10th. Both guys had very short birdie putts after missing eagle opportunities, which moved them to 17-under.

Just a casual 248-yard 6 iron from Bryson DeChambeau 🤷‍♂️ #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/3ZQRZ2uIBn — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Free Scottie!

Scottie Scheffler bounced back with a 6-under round on Sunday to end what was a very weird PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler ends at 13-under

Scottie Scheffler's week is finally over. He just posted a 65 in his final round, which dropped him to 13-under on the week. After his arrest and chaotic day on Friday, that's an incredible finish for the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world.

Final-round 65 for Scottie Scheffler! He currently sits T7 after a strong finish @PGAChampionship . pic.twitter.com/T2e6CAKL6f — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 19, 2024

Despite landing in the bunker at the 7th, Xander Schauffele still went up-and-down for birdie. He's now at 18-under on the day, which gives him a two-shot lead yet again.

Another birdie for Xander 🐦 His lead is back to 2. pic.twitter.com/1AFfGH01ZB — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 19, 2024

Almost everyone is going low so far today. Morikawa is still at even par, and slipped to T4, while Theegala is 1-over and now four shots back.

Morikawa and Theegala are the only players in the top 15 that aren't under par for their rounds — Joel Beall (@JoelMBeall) May 19, 2024

3 straight for Hovland

Viktor Hovland sank his third straight birdie, and he's now tied with Bryson DeChambeau at 16-under. He's now just one back of Xander Scauffele, and he just stuck a close shot at the par-3 8th. He'll have a look for a share of the lead.

That's 3️⃣ birdies in a row for Hovland! He's within 1 of the lead. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/NOTn0ENiHt — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Scottie Scheffler bouncing back

It's too late to make a difference, but Scottie Scheffler is on a roll on his back nine. He's made five birdies thru seven holes on the back side, which has him at 13-under now for the week. If it weren't for a rough outing on Saturday, he'd be right in this.

Here comes Bryson

Bryson DeChambeau just putted in a birdie from well off the green, and then sprinted off to the right celebrating. That's back-to-back birdies for him now, which has him just a shot off the lead.

What a ROAR for Bryson. pic.twitter.com/MjNaMO7wVx — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) May 19, 2024

Schauffele pushes the lead to 2

Xander Schauffele birdies No. 4 to extend his lead to two shots after Collin Morikawa missed his birdie putt.

Schauffele has birdied No. 1 and No. 4 so far as he looks for his first major win. There are five players at either 14-under or 15-under.

2-under thru 4! @XSchauffele leads by 2 after a hot start @PGAChampionship . pic.twitter.com/AggGJvlvjn — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 19, 2024

Shane Lowry gets robbed of an eagle by the flagstick

The flagstick kept Shane Lowry from tying Xander Schauffele at 16-under.

Lowry hit a beautiful chip from in front of the green on No. 4 that was dead center of the cup but had a little too much speed. The ball ricocheted off the stick and somehow stayed out.

Lowry had to settle for birdie and is tied with Collin Morikawa a shot back.

SO CLOSE! Shane Lowry hits the pin on 4. ⛳️ He settles for birdie on four to move into second. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/Z636PLaPXA — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Scottie Scheffler is on a birdie tear

Scottie Scheffler moves to 11-under after a birdie on No. 13 and has now birdied four of his last six holes.

Shane Lowry moves to 14-under

The top five players are now separated by just two shots after Shane Lowry birdied the par 3 No. 3.

DeChambeau now two back of Schauffele

Bryson DeChambeau hit a fantastic second shot to set up an easy birdie putt on No. 2 to move to 14-under and two shots back of Xander Schauffele.

Xander Schauffele birdies No. 1

Xander Schauffele birdies his first hole to get to 16-under and one shot clear of Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala.

Schauffele's second shot barely got over the bunker in front of the green but rolled out to give him a decent look for birdie that he converted.

Didn't take long for @XSchauffele to make birdie 💪 A strong start in pursuit of his first major victory @PGAChampionship . pic.twitter.com/kGJQNDJq0k — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 19, 2024

Sahith Theegala gets to 15-under with a 55-footer

Sahith Theegala has joined Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa at 15-under with a remarkable 55-foot birdie putt on No. 1.

Sahith Theegala starting things off RIGHT‼️ He birdies 1 and moves into a tie for the lead. 💯 #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/3s69WnNQyI — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

Here we go ...

Everyone is now on the course, including the co-leaders, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.

Schauffele's drive on No. 1 tricked into the right rough; Morikawa found the fairway.

Up ahead, Bryson DeChambeau had a good look at birdie on No. 1 to get to within a shot of the lead but pulled it. Can't let those opportunities slip by on a day like today when red numbers are there for the taking.

Logjam is jamming up

With some of those atop the leaderboard now on the course, 17 players are now within five shots of the lead. That includes Justin Thomas (-11), who holed out from the greenside bunker at No. 3.

Xander Schauffele Wins First Major Title at PGA Championship

John schwarb | may 19, 2024.

Xander Schauffele is finally a major champion.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Xander Schauffele is a first-time major champion, winning the PGA Championship on Sunday by one shot over a hard-charging Bryson DeChambeau.

The 30-year-old from San Diego, Calif., shot a final-round 65 at Valhalla Golf Club with a winning birdie at the 72nd hole, completing a week where he opened with a major championship-record-tying round of 62 Thursday and ended at 21 under par, setting a 72-hole scoring record.

Schauffele led or co-led after each round, but came to the 18th hole Sunday tied with DeChambeau at 20 under after the captain of LIV Golf's Crushers team capped off a thrilling bogey-free 7-under 64 with a birdie at the par-5 18th.

Schauffele’s drive at the last caught the left rough next to a fairway bunker, requiring him to stand in the bunker for his second. He hit an iron up the left side leaving a 36-yard pitch shot, which he hit to 5 feet. His putt caught the side of the cup and rolled in.

The putt that made Xander Schauffele a PGA Champion! 🏆 #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/SjBehodFWu — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

The world No. 3 came into the week as arguably the best player in golf to not yet own a major. He had 12 top-10s in majors including top-3 finishes in the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. He had won seven times previously on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open.

He proved nearly unflappable in the final round. He went out in 4-under 31 and after a bogey at the par-5 10th hole stuffed an iron shot into the par-3 11th and made birdie. He then added another at the 12th to maintain a one-shot lead.

Collin Morikawa co-led after 54 holes with Schauffele but had an ice-cold putter in the final round, making 14 straight pars, a bogey at the 15th and a too-late birdie at the 18th to finish an even-par round that left him tied for fourth with Thomas Detry at 17 under.

Viktor Hovland, perhaps now the best player without a major, finished solo third at 18 under. He and DeChambeau, playing together in the third-to-last group, put on a fabulous show with 13 combined birdies. But the Norwegian needed to birdie the last to match DeChambeau and missed a 10-footer. He then missed the par putt for his lone bogey of the day but third place was already secured.

The course was ripe for picking Sunday just as it had all week. Scoring got progressively lower with every round, bottoming out at 69.256 for the final round. Schauffele and Shane Lowry both tied the record low rounds in a major with 9-under 62s.

At the 72nd hole, DeChambeau drove into the left fairway bunker and with an awkward stance, hit a low iron flew out to the left of the green. He chipped up to 10 feet, 9 inches, and his birdie putt wouldn’t have gone in if it was 10 feet, 11 inches.

Bryson DeChambeau is FIRED UP 🔥 He a grabs share of the lead‼️ #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/jCyFzp6QYh — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 19, 2024

DeChambeau then headed to the range for a possible three-hole playoff, and could only watch as Schauffele birdied to win it.

Defending champion Brooks Koepka finished T26 , shooting his best round of the week on Sunday with a 66 but his hopes to defend vanished Saturday with a 74.

Scottie Scheffler also shot his best round of the week on Sunday, a 65 to surge up to T8, eight shots back. He is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in Louisville following his arrest Friday morning on multiple charges, including second-degree assault on a police officer stemming from an incident while he was driving into the course.
