15 Best Things to Do in Incheon (South Korea)

This industrial harbour city on the Yellow Sea is in the Seoul Metropolitan Area and shares the same metro network.

After the port was founded in 1884 Incheon became a melting pot, home to the only official Chinatown in Korea and a vibrant international market.

Incheon is the point of departure for a constellation of 168 islands, some joined to the city by infrastructure like the record-breaking Incheon Bridge, and others that are undiscovered holiday escapes as far as four hours away by boat.

The city is evolving at a startling rate, as you’ll discover at the futuristic Songdo International Business District, a new, environmentally friendly cityscape on reclaimed land south of the harbour.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Incheon :

1. Songdo Central Park

Tying together the many green spaces at Songdo International Business District is this 100-acre park, edged by skyscrapers and covering almost a tenth of the district’s total area.

The park is cut in two by a seawater canal that replenishes every 24 hours, and grabbing your attention on the west side is the curving outline of the Tri-Bowl, a cultural centre for exhibitions and live performances.

You can catch a water taxi or hire a pedal boat or canoe for a little voyage on the canal, while there’s a small collection of traditional Korean hanoks (wooden houses) by the water.

Add to all this a deer park, an island for rabbits on the waterway, lots of public art, a variety of gardens and plenty of places where you can just sit and appreciate the greenery and views of the modern skyline.

Some of the music video for Psy’s worldwide 2012 hit, Gangnam Style were filmed at Songdo Park.

The place to get to grips with the sheer size of Songdo International City is Zaha Hadid’s G-Tower (2013), which sits at the north-west end of Central Park, rising to 150 metres and holding offices for international organisations, including the United Nations.

There’s an outdoor observatory at the very top, and a majestic Sky Garden on the 29th floor, with indoor vegetation and a bird’s eye view through the arcing window over Central Park and out to the giant Incheon Bridge.

There are interactive information panels about the Songdo International Business District, coffee stands and machines that take humorous photos and email them to your phone.

G-Tower is free to enter and is arguably the best place in Incheon to watch the sun go down.

3. Incheon Grand Park

In 727 acres in the shadow of two peaks, Incheon Grand Park is a place where you can idle for a whole day in gardens, ecological areas, an arboretum and children’s zoo.

The latter opened its doors in 2001 and keeps more than 200 animals, counting Japanese macaques, Pungsan dogs, sheep and ostriches.

The rose garden is fabulous in summer, and grows around 7,800 bushes from 66 species, and the natural forest is installed with information boards about this environment and its wildlife.

You can rent a bike, tandem or four-wheel group bike to get around, and there’s a multitude of facilities, including a campsite, a small museum dedicated to the environment, an ice rink in winter, an outdoor theatre, picnic areas, a sledding hill and sports pitches.

Come by in late-April, and you’ll be in time for the wonderful Incheon Grand Park Cherry Blossom Festival.

4. Sinpo International Market

The story of this market not far north of the port in Jung-gu begins at the end of the 19th century, when vendors started selling vegetables to the Westerners, Chinese and Japanese who had recently arrived in the area.

The market was officially established in 1970 and has become Incheon’s representative market, especially with the influx of tourists arriving by ferry and cruise boats over the last couple of decades.

There are loads of little stores selling everything from knock-off clothing to cosmetics, bags, fresh produce and cookware, all along a spacious central hallway with a glass roof.

The reason you have to come is to try the delectable street food, like mandu (fried dumplings), jjolmyeon (spicy, chewy noodles) and dakgangjeong, which is fried chicken with a sweet and spicy glaze.

5. Chinatown

The only official Chinatown in Korea is opposite Incheon Station in Jung-gu, and has been around since 1884. These days most of the residents of Incheon’s Chinatown are 2nd or 3rd generation, but there’s still a sizeable population of Chinese expats in the city, numbering around 50,000. Chinatown has lots of architectural flourishes, the most obvious of which are the three paifangs, or gateways.

There’s a school for Chinese expats here, as well as a cultural centre to promote an exchange between the two nations, and you can go shopping for antique ceramics and traditional Chinese tea.

The food is a sort of Korean-Chinese fusion, and a real string in Chinatown’s bow, whether you want to sit down at a restaurant or pick up something as you wander.

Kung pao chicken, sweet and sour pork, up jjajangmyun (noodles with black bean sauce), pineapple tarts, candied strawberries and moon cake (with a sweet bean paste) are available at stalls or show up on menus.

6. Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village

Also by the port and close to Chinatown, this residential area was settled in the late-19th century by newly arrived foreigners.

After a period of decline Songwol-dong had a thinning population, which led to even more young people moving away.

The gloom was lifted with n imaginative regeneration scheme, furnishing the neighbourhood with intricate and brightly coloured sculptures and murals evoking Korean folk stories, international fairytales and beloved children’s characters.

There are endless photo opportunities in Songwol-dong as you stumble upon scenes from the Wizard of Oz, and the likes of Pinocchio, Doraemon, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White, Bambi, the Chinese Seven Fairies and the Japanese Sea Dragon Palace.

7. Ganghwado

Korea’s fifth largest island, in the Han River estuary is just a simple drive Choji or Grandhwa bridges and is often described as a “roofless museum”. During the Joseon Dynasty Ganghwado was often on the frontline during invasions and is peppered with fortifications and important battlefields.

Three to check out are Gapgot Fortification, involved in the 13th-century Mongol invasions of Korea, Gwangseongbo Fortress, scene of a fierce battle during the United States’ expedition to Korea in 1871, and Chojijin Fortress, where the French fleets were defeated in 1866 but also where the unfavourable Japan-Korea treaty was signed in 1876. At Chojijin, see the Yeonmijeong Pavilion where you can set your gaze across to North Korea’s Gapung County.

Land reclamation and a new highway have turned what used to be an island on the north side of the harbour into a contiguous neighbourhood in Incheon.

There was a U.S. Army base on Wolmido from the 1950s until the 90s, and since then the island has turned into a weekend retreat for Incheon.

Wolmido’s first started attracting visitors as early as 1989 with the Wolmido Cultural Street, a promenade edged on its landward side by cafes and restaurants and buzzing with life on weekends when you can watch outdoor performances and sit for street artists.

The restaurants have a flair for seafood, and you can dine with vistas over the water to Yeongjongdo.

There’s an observatory to survey the coast, a museum on Korean immigration, a small amusement park and a blissful swathe of parkland on the island’s hillier east side, topped with a scenic lookout at the highest point for romantic sunsets.

9. Jeondeungsa Temple

Also on Ganghwado and sheltered in ancient woodland is what is believed to be the oldest Buddhist temple in South Korea, established in the 4th century CE under the rule of Sosurim of Goguryeo.

Jeondeungsa Temple’s location made it useful for defence and in 1866 some 50 Buddhist priests took part in the victorious defence of Korea against the French navy, earning a place for the temple in the nation’s heart.

At the Daeungbojeon (Main Hall), a Korean National Treasure, you can read the names of soldiers on the walls and columns of people who fought against the French and wrote their names here to pray to Buddha for good luck.

The canopy over the statue of Buddha displays supreme craftsmanship, while the Yaksajeon (Medicine Buddha Hall) is marvellous, as is the Beomjong Bell, cast back in the 11th century.

At Jeondeungsa Temple you can take part in a temple stay programme, a kind of retreat, for a better understanding of Korean Buddhism and Korean traditional culture.

10. Baengnyeongdo

Even though the ferry ride to this spectacular island is four hours, there’s no lack of passengers willing to make the journey.

Baengnyeongdo is among the five north western border islands and close to the disputed Northern Limit Line.

The island has a population of just over 4,300, and on clear days you can see North Korea’s Changsan Cape.

What draws the crowds are the strange sedimentary stacks, cliffs and outcrops of Dumujin on the north-east coast, given names like Candlestick Rock and Elephant Rock.

On Baengnyeongdo’s coastline are some beaches to take your breath away, some with rather unusual characteristics.

Sagot Beach has something known as diatomaceous earth, which while soft to the touch, becomes hard under pressure, so is one of the few sandy beaches that you can drive on.

Baengnyeongdo is also the cradle of Korean Christianity, as the first place that the Lutheran missionary Karl Gützlaff arrived in 1832, founding the Junghwadong Church, still standing and a crucial pilgrimage site for Korean Christians.

11. Gyeongin Waterway (Ara Canal)

Linking the West Sea (Yellow Sea) with the Han River, the Gyeongin Waterway is an 18-kilometre shipping canal from Incheon’s Seo-gu district to Gangseo-gu, part of Seoul.

This project was ready in 2012 and is Korea’s first inland waterway, and has a few things to hold your interest.

You can catch a cruise boat from the Incheon terminal at Gyeongin Port, while there’s a bicycle path on its banks, totalling more than 41 kilometres and with a handful of shops along the route where you can rent your own set of wheels.

At the east end, by the Han, is Gimpo’s gigantic Hyndai Premium Outlet mall, for international luxury brands at discounted prices.

And if you’re travelling along the waterway keep an eye out for the impressive, man-made Ara Waterfall and the AraMaru Skywalk, a sort of circular bridge projecting out over the cliffs on the north bank.

12. Jayu Park

Notable for being the first western style park to be plotted in South Korea, Jayu Park is spread over Mount Eungbong, just east of Chinatown.

The name was given to the park in 1957 when a statue of General MacArthur was erected here, and translates to Park of Freedom.

Leader of the United Nations Command, MacCarthur planned the successful amphibious landing at Incheon, in September 1950, involving 75,000 troops and 261 vessels.

You’ll find his statue at the summit of Mount Eungbong where there’s a panorama to savour of the port, the West Sea, downtown Incheon and the encircling mountains.

The park is at its best for a brief spell in April when the cherry blossom is out.

13. Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living

The hilly Songhyun Park in Dong-gu has a riveting museum that charts a difficult period in Incheon’s not too distant past.

At the Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living you’ll learn all about the daldongne (moon village), referring to government-designated temporary settlements for the poor that cropped up on Incheon’s hilltops in the 1960s and 70s.

They were called “moon villages”, literally because they had a clear view of the night sky.

Galleries here capture the atmosphere of these humble but close-knit communities, with recreated alley scenes and amenities like a barber shop, grocery shop, water supply area, toilet and shop for coal briquettes.

There are hands-on activities for all family members to try, like dice games and dressing up in old-time costume.

14. Incheon Bridge

The longest bridge in Korea, and the tenth-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, the 21.38-kilometre Incheon Bridge ties Yeongjeong Island and Incheon International Airport to the mainland at Songdo.

Incheon Bridge was completed in 2009 at a total cost of ₩2.45 trillion and cut up to an hour from journey times to the airport, enabling Incheon’s growth as an international business city.

The crossing spans the main shipping route in an out of the port and so has a clearance of 74 metres and an enormous centre span of 800 metres.

At this cable-stayed section, the main tower climbs to more than 230 metres.

15. Memorial Hall for Incheon Landing Operation

The Battle of Incheon (Inchon) is remembered at this war memorial, which cuts a powerful outline at the foot of a mountain in Yeonsu-gu.

The hall was inaugurated in 1984 to mark the centenary of the opening of Incheon Port.

The site is crowned with an 18-metre memorial tower and flies the flags of the 16 nations that represented United Nations Command.

In the hall you can discover the ins and outs of the landing operation, a decisive event in the Korean War, browsing artefacts, information boards and an illustrative scale model that sets out the attack in perfect detail.

Outside is a small collection of tanks, missiles and aircraft (Cessna O-1 and F-86 Sabre) together with commemorative statues.

If you feel exhausted from all the sightseeing in Incheon, head to Spasis Jjimjilbang. Being the biggest jjimjilbang in the city, Spasis doesn’t just have the basic spa facilities. In fact, it even features a movie theater, food courts, a gym, and a minibar. Try the different sauna rooms such as the charcoal room, and the salt room, all with different benefits, before taking a dip at the rooftop pool.

It is a hilltop memorial and exhibition hall that commemorates the historic Inchon Landing led by US General Douglas MacArthur. Although the site looks somber, it gives visitors an insight into life during and after the war. Find military weapons, artifacts, and other paraphernalia relating to the war. Outside, see vehicles, tanks, and commemorative statues on display along with the flag of the countries that helped South Korea under the United Nations.

16. Go on a Day Trip to Baengnyeong Island

Baengnyeong Island remains to be one of the most visited sites in Incheon despite the four-hour-long ferry ride. The island, said to resemble a flying ibis, is strategically located near the Northern Limit Line, a disputed location between North and South Korea. While its location may be daunting for some travelers, its unspoiled wonders and history are worth the visit. See the Dumujin Coast’s breathtaking set of sea cliffs carved by tidal erosion and get a chance to spot the rare Chinese egret on the island. Known for sprawling parks, wide swaths of beach, and ancient, colorful temples, Incheon is more than just an airport layover, it’s a well-deserving candidate for a prime spot on your South Korean itinerary.

Explore Incheon International Airport

Most people who visit Incheon do so as transit passengers through Incheon International Airport . But even if the airport is your only experience of this vibrant city, you can still get a taste of the local culture (with a smattering of Duty Free shopping on the side). 

Within the airport itself you’ll find a Korean culture museum, Korean restaurants set in replica hanok (traditional Korean houses), and various performances that include traditional music, dance, and costumes. If you have a long layover, check out the free transit tour service offered by the airport. Tours of various Incheon attractions range from one to four hours and include destinations such as the 4th-century Jeondeungsa Temple, and the world-renowned art gallery at Paradise City, a casino, spa, and entertainment complex.

Visit Korea's Only Official Chinatown

Chinese immigrants began flocking to Incheon after the territory was leased to China’s Qing Dynasty in the 1880s. The area is Korea’s only official Chinatown and home to a modest Chinese community, plus scores of scrumptious eateries proffering Chinese-Korean fare like jjamppong (spicy seafood stew) and jajangmyeon, an iconic dish made from black bean noodles that originated in Incheon Chinatown in the early 1900s.

Exit at Incheon Subway Station (Line 1 on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway) and walk under an ornate 36-foot-tall Chinese-style gateway to find the quintessentially red-hued buildings, colorful historical artwork on Samgukji Mural Street, and the Jajangmyeon Museum, dedicated to the popular noodle dish of the same name.

Get Lost in Incheon Grand Park

For a bucolic countryside experience without leaving the Seoul Capital Area, a visit to the 727-acre Incheon Grand Park is in order. Less than an hour’s drive from Incheon International Airport, the sprawling green space is a natural oasis set between Gwanmosan and Sangasan mountains. Countless diversions are available in the park, including walking trails, sledding hills, an outdoor theater, botanical garden, skating rink, and bike rentals.

Give Thanks at Yonggungsa Temple

One of the stops on the Incheon Airport free transit tour itinerary is Yonggungsa Temple. Although it was originally founded in the 8th century, this quaint temple was reconstructed by the 19th-century politician Heungseon Daewongun, who used the temple as a sanctuary where he prayed for his son to become king. After 10 years, his prayers were heard, his son became King Gojong, and the temple was rebuilt as an offering of thanks.

Go Back in Time at Songdo Hanok Village

A hanok is a traditional Korean wooden house, featuring a gently sloping roof, tile accents, and generally a few large brown kimchi pots dotted nearby for good measure. 

Set within the seaside Songdo Central Park is Songdo Hanok Village, a graceful cluster of hanok houses erected to provide a glimpse into life in a historic Korean village. In addition to featuring prime examples of Joseon-era architecture, there are also free bi-monthly cultural performances, and a variety of Korean restaurants to give your visit a local flavor.

Marvel at Jeondeungsa Temple

Set in Samrangseong Fortress, Jeondeungsa Temple is presumed to be the oldest Buddhist temple in Korea, having been built in the 4th century when Buddhism was first introduced to the Korean peninsula by monks traveling from China.

The temple is famed for its eye-catching architecture, including the impressive Daeungbojeon Hall (the main worship hall) which houses an ornately carved wood canopy as a backdrop for a serene gold Buddha statue. In addition to the hall, which is Korea National Treasure No. 178, other national treasures on-site include the Yangheonsu Victory Monument and the 11th-century Beomjong Bell.

Shop Until You Drop at Sinpo International Market

What originally began as a few vendors selling vegetables to the Japanese, Chinese, and Western settlers who flocked to the area after Incheon Port opened in the late 19th century is now the sizable Sinpo International Market home to over 140 stores.

The extensive market features a variety of wares such as shoes, clothing, and fish, but is mainly known for stalls purveying savory dishes such as dakgangjeong (fried chicken coated in sweet and spicy sauce), mandu (dumplings), and egg tart.

Get Luxurious in Paradise City

Channel your inner 007 with a jaunt to Paradise City , an extravagant hotel, casino, spa, dining, and entertainment complex worthy of a James Bond flick. The massive resort-style complex is billed as the first in Northeast Asia, and highlights include Imperial Treasure (a Michelin-starred restaurant serving Cantonese cuisine), an indoor theme park, and the extensive, ultra-chic Cimer Spa offering indoor and outdoor pools, 11 tranquil rest areas, and a variety of traditional Korean saunas.

A guided tour of Paradise Art Space , the complex’s sleek art gallery, is one of the stops on the free transit tour service offered by the airport.

Ride a Ferris Wheel on Wolmido Island

Set half a mile off the coast of Incheon and connected by a bridge, Wolmido Island makes for a popular weekend destination during warmer months due to its festive carnival atmosphere. Stroll down The Culture Street through various squares that feature imaginative sculptures and regular live performances, pause for a coffee at one of the many sea-view cafes lining the boardwalk, or ride the pirate ship or the 377-foot-tall Ferris wheel in the fanciful Wolmi Theme Park .

Stroll Through Songdo Central Park

The natural centerpiece of Incheon is Songdo Central Park , a pastoral delight juxtaposed against towering skyscrapers. The park was modeled after Manhattan’s Central Park, and in addition to walking trails and picnic areas, it features meadows full of deer, the aforementioned hanok village, and a man-made lake offering paddle boats and water taxis.

Birdwatch at Sorae Ecology Park

Once the Sorae Salt Field that produced the largest amount of sun-dried sea salt in Korea until 1996, the Sorae Ecology Park has swapped the popular seasoning with an array of walking trails and natural beauty.

The park’s history is well-preserved in the form of a Salt Field Learning Center, which allows you a peek at the old salt warehouse, and a chance to experience the art of salt harvesting for yourself. The marshy park is also a prime spot for birdwatching, and is known for the handful of cute wooden windmills dotting its landscape.

Be Enchanted by Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village

What was once a rundown area of Incheon has been transformed into the beloved Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village , a bright, whimsical tourist attraction decorated with scenes from famous fairy tales. Particularly prized among the Instagram crowd, the still-inhabited neighborhood is bedecked with rainbows and castles, and features paintings or statues of classic characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Snow White.

Relax on the Beach

Incheon Airport is set on an artificially created patch of land between Yeongjong and Yongyu islands. This means that's it's only a quick taxi ride away from the broad white-sand Eurwangni Beach .

While the beach is only open for swimming in the summer season, strolls on the sand can be taken year round. It also boasts dozens of seafood restaurants and affordable hotels lining the seafront.

Take a Day Trip to Baengnyeong Island

Although it’s actually a four-hour ferry ride away from Incheon, Baengnyeong Island and its unique landscape are must-sees for those interested in seeing the area’s wild side.

Looking at a map, it appears as though Baengnyeong Island would be across the border in North Korea, but it’s actually one of South Korea’s five northwestern border islands. The remote, windswept island is renowned for its literary history and mysterious rock formations, and the wide, empty Sagot Beach which was used as a military airport during the Korean War.

Incheon, South Korea | 23+ Stunning Things to do in Incheon

Looking for things to do in Incheon? Well, you came to the right place. I moved to Incheon in February of 2019 to teach English in South Korea. When people visit South Korea, they mostly think of Seoul and Busan . Some who do their research know about Daegu, Daejeon, and Incheon.

What is Incheon known for? Incheon is the South Korea’s third-largest city. It is where the Incheon international airport is located and the saying Incheon is known for is “All ways Incheon” meaning that all ways lead to Incheon because of Incheon International airport, the shipping dock, and more.

Incheon South Korea is also known to hold a lot of ex-pats from all over the world and is becoming more popular with the city of Songdo. While living here, I have been able to explore and wander to various places in Incheon and I wanted to share a local’s perspective on things to do in Incheon. What to do in Incheon City – things to do in Incheon, South Korea

Incheon Metropolitan City is probably one of the most undervalued places to visit in South Korea. Most people will skip over it because there is so much to do in Seoul . Most people don’t know where Incheon is even though it is where the airport is. Incheon is quite far from everything, unfortunately, but what makes it great is that it isn’t overtaken by tourists and foreigners like Seoul . You immediately go into Hongdae, Itaewon, Myeongdong, and you are surrounded by tourists. When you visit Incheon, it’s definitely a more authentic feel of Korea. Don’t let Seoul prevent you from experiencing the best things to do in Incheon.

Many transit passengers may want to explore parts of Korea and Incheon is the best location to get a glimpse of Korean Culture. There are a lot of nearby attractions for airport layovers, especially in Songdo international city.

Best time to visit Incheon

The best time to visit Incheon is in the spring, March-May, or fall, September–November, months. The winter months are doable if you don’t mind the cold. The weather can be very cold up to -20 degrees F so be prepared with some thick winter coats. The summer months, however, are extremely humid. The temperatures don’t usually get too high, but the humidity is about 80% and higher. Things to do in Incheon can vary depending on the weather.

How to get to Incheon – Where is Incheon?

Incheon is located in the far west of South Korea. It’s the main area where you will fly when arriving in South Korea.

If you are arriving from the airport then you are already in Incheon. You can easily take the subway to your destination or get in a taxi cab and travel around. If you are new to South Korea, let me explain the ways to travel around South Korea.

One of the best ways to get around Seoul or Incheon is by Subway, they are consistently reliable and always run on time. There are plenty of subways to take and they are easy to get around. All signs are written in English and Korean, just be sure to download the subway app first before arriving in South Korea.

One way to get around Incheon is to take the bus . Buses are very common all over South Korea and especially in the major city propers. It’s one of the best ways to get around. However, if you are traveling during heavy traffic times, it may be the worst way to get around.

The other way to get around is by Taxi, this is perfect for family, people who are struggling with traveling long distances or if it happens to be late at night and past the time when buses and taxis operate. Taxis are very affordable in Korea which makes it a great resource to use. I highly suggest you download the Kakao Taxi app. This is pretty much the uber of South Korea and you can pay the driver with a card or cash. You don’t need to input your information into the app.

Where to stay in Incheon City

There are a lot of areas to stay in Incheon, but I think these are the best places to stay if you are looking for things to do in Incheon or just want a layover hotel .

• Unseo – If you are only in Korea for a layover, I suggest you look for hotels near or in the area of Unseo. Unseo is the next subway stop from the airport. There are a lot of affordable transit hotels in this area and is a very newly developed area perfect to just get a good night’s rest and some food.
• Paradise City – If you want to visit Cimer Spa and enjoy a spa day during your layover or just wanting to stay and be in that area, I suggest you stay at Paradise City. This is a great hotel location for layovers as well since it is very close to the airport and you can easily take a bus from the airport here or even take the subway as well.
• Oakwood Premier in Songdo – Now I suggest Oakwood because it is the most popular hotel to stay at in Songdo, however, you can easily find any hotel or location in Songdo. Songdo is very popular for foreign visitors who are there for work.
• Bupyeong – I suggest staying in Bupyeong if you want to be surrounded by a ton of restaurants and locals. It’s a great place to shop, explore and a very populated area in Incheon.

Things to do in Incheon City – Popular Cafes to Visit in Incheon

Looking for what to do in Incheon? Cafe hopping is probably one of the most popular things to do in Incheon or in fact all of Korea. There are so many cute little cafes within the city which means there are a lot of things to do in Incheon. Many of these cafes are great things to do in Incheon at night.

• Rose Stella Garden Cafe – This is Incheon’s cutest little cafe that has a greenhouse feel. With many of the greenhouse cafes and parks popping up in the area, this is a cafe that is popular because of its quaint charm.
• Daily Oasis – This cafe is for matcha green tea lovers. This entire cafe focuses on the natural earthy flavors of green tea. They have ice cream and desserts along with coffee. This cafe is Instagram-worthy with its cute cactus and cow-shaped cookies.
• Cafe Mug – This cafe is a very cute and relaxing cafe. You can sit on the rooftop under tents, eat dessert, drink coffee or other drinks along with your friends.
• Cafe Valor – Check out this cute Instagrammable Cafe in Incheon. You can easily take photos in their large warehouse filled with the furniture you can purchase.

Things to do in Incheon | Where to eat in Incheon

• Incheon Arts Center – One of my favorite places to enjoy a few good meals and go drinking is to hang on in the Incheon Arts Center area. Near the subway station are a lot of great restaurants and places to drink. This is a pretty popular area among younger people and there is a reason why. Additionally, you can walk to the open park area and view the Art Center and light show as well.
• Chinatown – In Chinatown, you should each the best Jjajangmyeon which is a noodle dish with black bean sauce that is found in South Korea. They have been known to have made this dish since the 1800s. The best restaurant to go to for jjajangmyeon is Mandabok.
• Songdo – If you want more Western food options, I suggest you go to the Technopark Subway station and use exit 2 to get to Triple Street. There you can easily find so many Western Restaurants. You can walk into the mall and find some market-style places to eat at or keep going through the passageway where you can find Mexican food from Coreanos and more.
• Bupyeong – Near Bupyeong Station there are tons of places to eat, shop and explore. Above the large market is also a huge food court where you can get any type of food imaginable.

Where to shop in Incheon – Where to go in Incheon

• Bupyeong Underground Shopping Mall – This Incheon shopping mall is very impressive and super easy to get lost in. It’s one of the biggest underground malls and there is something for everyone here.
• Triple Street – Triple Street is the popular Incheon shopping mall area located in Songdo. This popular area is filled with locals and foreigners from all over. There are more Western brands here like Nike, Adidas, H&M, Zara, and more. You can find a lot to do here and be sure to eat at Shake Shack!
• NC Cube Canal Walk – Another shopping area that is popular in Incheon is the NC Cube Canal Walk. This area is filled with many western brands as well, however, this area isn’t very easy to get to by public transportation.

Visit Cimer’s K-Style Spa at Paradise City

Skincare and spas are very popular all over South Korea. Koreans really enjoy resorts and fancy hotels , it’s part of their culture. Many people will rent a hotel room over the weekend to either spend quality time with their friends or significant others. The Cimer K-Style Spa is a very popular spa in Korea and is quite affordable once you find out everything that this place has to offer. You can enjoy an entire day swimming, enjoy spa treatments, and feeling relaxed. This is the most popular day spa in Incheon and one of the most popular things to do in Incheon during a layover.

Gyeongin Waterway

Gyeongin Waterway – Gyeongin Waterway is a beautiful canal that runs through Incheon and connects the Han River to the Yellow Sea. It’s a great place to take a leisurely stroll, enjoy some fresh air, and take in the sights of Incheon.

Along the way, you can find many restaurants, cafes, and shops. There are also plenty of historical sites to explore such as the Incheon Grand Bridge, which is the longest bridge in South Korea. The Gyeongin Waterway was built in the late 19th century and has been a major transportation route for goods and people ever since. It’s also a great place to take some beautiful photos of Incheon’s skyline.

Bupyeong Underground Market

South Korea is very popular for shopping for clothes, bags, skincare, and more. Bupyeong Underground Market has it all. You can find anything you really want in this area and bargain to the best of your abilities. Underground markets are very popular in South Korea. If you have been to Korea, you probably have explored many of the night markets in and around Seoul.

This is one of my most memorable things to do in Incheon. I remember going to this market quite often as a kid. It’s a great place to shop.

Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living

Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living is a great place to learn about the history of Incheon. This museum was built in the late 19th century and showcases the traditional Korean lifestyle. It’s a great place to learn about the culture and history of Incheon. You can also find many artifacts from the past such as pottery, furniture, and more.

Wolmido and Wolmi Theme Park – Popular things to do in Incheon at Night

So if you happen to miss the boardwalks from the US or want to experience the boardwalk of Incheon, Wolmido Island or Wolmi traditional park is the place to go. Here they have classic wooden roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and carnival games. You can walk all the way to the lighthouse, enjoy street food, buy alcohol at the convenience store and just walk around the boardwalk.

If you are adventurous, one of the most popular things to do in Incheon at Wolmido Island is to ride the Disco Bang Bang. I absolutely hated this ride, but it’s found all over social media and is a very fun ride. There are a lot of people who get on it and there is a DJ who entertains and tries to throw you off the ride. It’s one of the fun things to do in Incheon Korea at Wolmido Island.

Visit Incheon Chinatown and Jajangmyeon Museum

Not too far from Wolmido in Chinatown. Chinatown is a popular destination in Incheon because of the influence of Chinese immigrants and food. Jajangmyeon a Chinese Korean dish, is popular among Koreans. This dish is what they call a Chinese dish, however, you will never see it in a Chinese restaurant unless it is in Korea. This dish is a noodle dish covered in a black sauce with meat and veggies. This is one of my favorite things to do in Incheon when I am craving Jjajangmyeon.

Sinpo International Market

If you’re interested in learning more about Incheon’s past, then be sure to visit Sinpo International Market, which is home to many traditional shops and restaurants. This vibrant market is home to hundreds of stalls selling all sorts of local delicacies. Be sure to try some of the famous seafood dishes while you’re there! Here, you can buy souvenirs, sample local food, and learn about the city’s culture.

Songwol Dong Fairy Land

In the same neighborhood and right next to Chinatown is Songwol Dong Fairy tale village. This is a magical place in South Korea with images from famous Disney characters, fairytale fiction, and more. You can get some of the best Instagram selfies you want here. If you have seen the KDrama “What’s wrong with Secretary Kim?”, you can see the rainbow steps here, where the movie was filmed. Additionally, you can get a stamp with your selfie blasted on it. I used it a lot for my kids at school, which has made it pretty fun to use.

This is probably one of the most visited places and things to do in Incheon.

Sorae Ecology Park

This is probably the least known thing in Incheon and is located in the area I am living in. There is a nice nature walk near my house with old-style windmills. I found it to be a relaxing nature walk and a great way to not feeling like I am in a city proper. I was also able to take some cute Instagram photos (oh don’t mind me) and explore the open space.

Go to the beach on Incheon’s Islands

Incheon isn’t notorious for beautiful beaches but there are a few beaches to go looking for shellfish, swim, and some do have a good view as long as the tide is high. Incheon’s beaches are typically more known for their muddy flats, but it makes for good places for kids and a good place to visit in Incheon.  The water is usually quite shallow and the waves are less harsh. I highly suggest visiting Hanagae Bathing Resort on Muui Island, it’s my favorite Incheon beach.

Jayu Park is a great place to visit in Incheon. It is located in the heart of the city and offers stunning views of the harbor and the surrounding mountains. The park was built in 1883 by Japanese forces during their occupation of Korea, and it has since become a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

The park features several monuments, including a statue of General Douglas MacArthur, who led the United Nations forces during the Korean War. There is also a memorial to the victims of the Korean War, as well as a monument dedicated to those who died in the Battle of Incheon. The park also features a beautiful fountain and several gardens, making it a great place to relax and take in some of Incheon’s history.

Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Alley (배다리 헌책방 골목)

If you are a book lover or just interested in finding any book store, library, etc. in Korea, one of the places to visit in Incheon is the Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Alley. Like the famous bookstore alley in Busan , these stores are covered from floor to ceiling with books.

Aiins World

This cute little theme park located in Incheon is filled with miniature recreations of world-famous buildings. See some of the famous architectures around the world such as the Great Wall of China, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center with its famous ice rink, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Broadway in New York City.

Ganghwado or Ganghwa Island

Ganghwado is a beautiful island on the coast of Incheon and can be accessed by vehicle by driving over a bridge. It is one of the biggest islands off the coast of Incheon and has a lot of amazing things to see and do. It is located in the yellow sea on the west coast and the only thing that separated this island from North Korea is the Han river. There are a lot of beautiful cafes and restaurants in this area making it a great location to visit and miss the touristy crowds.

Visit Incheon Grand Park

Like Seoul Grand Park, Incheon has its own Grand Park. This is a large-scale park located between two mountains within Incheon. This park includes an outdoor theater, artificial turf grounds, skating rink, botanical garden, bicycle trails, lake, sledding hill, a children’s zoo, observatory, and more. You can easily rent a bike and take a ride around this beautiful park. This is one of the best things to do in Incheon during the spring and fall months.

• Jeondeungsa Temple

Jeondeungsa Temple is a beautiful temple located in Incheon. It was built in the year 678 and is one of the oldest temples in Korea. This temple is known for its unique architecture, which includes a three-story pagoda and a five-story stone pagoda.

The temple also has several other buildings, including the main hall, lecture hall, and bell tower. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the surrounding mountains and forests. Jeondeungsa Temple is a great place to visit if you want to learn more about Korean history and culture.

Baengnyeongdo

Baengnyeongdo is an island located off the coast of Incheon. It is known for its beautiful beaches and stunning views of the ocean. The island is also home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, dolphins, and migratory birds. There are several hiking trails on the island that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also explore the many historical sites on Baengnyeongdo, such as the Baengnyeong Fortress and the Baengnyeong Lighthouse.

Things to do in Songdo Incheon

Songdo International Business District is located in the southernmost part of Incheon. This area became popular because of large companies like Samsung, and Jansen, and add to more of the things to do in Incheon. Many foreigners live in this area because of the large companies so there are a lot of Western restaurants. Songdo is considered to be the newer part of Incheon. You can easily bike the entire parameter of the island and that was the purpose of this location.

Songdo is one of my favorite places to visit in Incheon. Incheon sightseeing has been quite popular in this area and for a good reason as well. I’ve listed the Incheon Songdo attractions and where to go in Incheon.

Picnic and boat ride at Songdo Central Park

One of the most popular things to do in Incheon outside of eating and drinking in Song-do is to visit Song-do’s central park. Central Park is a large park with many walking trails and a man-made river in the middle. Here you can have a picnic, rent small a small boat or kayak with your family and friends, and cruise down the river. Don’t forget to visit the rabbit island.

If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature, then Songdo Central Park is definitely worth checking out. This scenic park features walking trails, ponds, and plenty of green space where you can sit back and relax. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon on a sunny day.

The Tri Bowl is an art center located in Songdo’s central park. This creative architectural building was built with 3 bowl shapes that happen to sit on the water. You can walk on the paved concrete paths underneath the structure. There are some events that are held here that you can enjoy as well. G-Tower Observatory Deck

After visiting the Tri Bowl, take some time to go to the G-Tower. This is a tower a 33-floor, 150-meter skyscraper. There are lots of small businesses located in this tower, but the observatory deck is the most popular location to visit for tourists. You can get the best view of Songdo’s Central Park.

Songdo Hanok Village

This is a modern hanok village since it isn’t in the traditional sense but is made to look traditional. It’s a great way to get some beautiful photos and visit a hanok village in Incheon or in Songdo if only visiting for a layover. They have cafes and restaurants in these hanoks. It was a way to promote some tourism in the area as well.

Incheon Bridge

The Incheon Bridge is a bridge that connects the mainland of South Korea to the island of Yeongjongdo. It is one of the longest bridges in the world, stretching over 10 miles long. The bridge was opened in 2009 and has become an iconic symbol of Incheon.

Visitors can take a walk or bike ride across the bridge and enjoy stunning views of the ocean and nearby islands. There are also several restaurants and cafes located along the bridge, making it a great spot to take a break and enjoy some local cuisine.

There are a lot of amazing Incheon beaches to visit. However, a lot is not easy to get to. Many Koreans will tell you the beaches in Incheon are not great because they are difficult to get to and many do not consist of that beautiful white sand. I have found a lot of the beaches to be quite beautiful if you are willing to commute.

Of course! There are a lot of things to do in Incheon and honestly, I prefer it over many parts of Seoul. You can have better integration with being around Koreans and still can do a ton of shopping, great parks, cafes, and many things to see and do including KDrama filming locations.

What is Incheon best known for?

Incheon is best known for its Chinatown I would say. They are also well known for its Incheon Airport.

What can you do at the Incheon Airport layover?

There are a lot of things you can do. If you are able to travel outside of the airport, I highly recommend you read this post on what to do in Incheon Airport for a layover .

Can I leave Incheon Airport during a layover?

This highly depends on your country and visa requirements. Many Americans can leave Incheon Airport during a layover, however, they do need to fill out a K-ETA which authorizes them to visit. You can easily do that online prior to your trip.

Is Incheon better than Seoul?

I wouldn’t compare the two. They are both quite different and Seoul is very well known for many tourist attractions. Incheon provides a more intimate experience while Seoul really gives you that big city vibe. Both cities are worth visiting and mentioning to make a memorable experience.

Is Korea cheaper than Japan?

100% yes. It’s much cheaper than Japan. That mainly is because Japan has a lot of capital debt while Korea’s debt is fairly low. It is more affordable because of their food culture and importance of accessible and affordable public transportation which many Korean’s rely on a daily basis.

Hi NieNie, I enjoyed reading your blog and amazing info. I’m gonna be visiting Incheon this end of February with my daughters age 22 and 15. We are originally from Vancouver Canada but now lives in California. I think we don’t need to get K-eta. We are exempted, please correct me if I’m wrong. We love Korean food, cafes and ofcourse shopping. We have 10hrs layover and would like my daughters to have the best time in korea. They love Korean food, cafes and skin care. They also would like to try HANBOK dressing and I love spas, parks, nature’s and garden, I could go on lol. Would you kindly please recommend a good itinerary and places to visit that are closer and convenient to get to by subway, walking or taxi? Also, do you think we should book a hotel to rest in the afternoon? We will arrive early morning6:30am in Incheon and our flight is not until 8pm. Hope these are not too much to ask and I apologize if it was. Thank you so much! Mira

Hi Mira, the KETA isn’t necessary until December 31, 2024. YOu aren’t exempted, it’s just been delayed. You could do the Hanbok rental and do all of that yourself. There is also an option to do a layover tour at the airport. You can ask if there is a possibility of renting a hanbok. The Taxi question would depend on what time you will be arriving. You could be stuck in traffic for hours. The safest bet typically is by subway, but keep in mind it’s about 1-1.5 hours to the city center which will take up a bunch of your time. What To Do In Incheon – 9 Unmissable Things To Do In 2024

Many people merely glaze over Incheon as just a layover stop to hop to another country, or else it’s just the airport to transit into Seoul.

What they don’t realise is that Incheon is actually the third largest city in all of South Korea (and the second largest port city at that), and is absolutely, positively worth spending a few days to explore; there are historic buildings to acknowledge, beautiful parks to explore, unique nooks and crannies in the all parts of the city to uncover, and you’re guaranteed to witness some of the best sights in Korea.

Additionally, just when you thought you’ve seen it all with Korea coming up with some of the best street foods you can imagine (spicy rice cakes, fish cake skewers, fried chicken, etc), Incheon might surprise you.

Being so close to the ocean, the city boasts some locally famous dishes that you might just have to try, such as ‘mul-teombeong’ (a hangover soup made from a particular type of monkfish, beansprouts and spicy flavours), loach soup which is eaten with stone-pot rice and scorched rice water, and grilled ‘samchi’ (mackerel), best eaten at Samchi Street in Dong-Incheon, which is exactly what you think it is: an entire food district dedicated to samchi.  

Consistently rated as one of the best airports in the world, you barely need to step out of the Incheon hub to partake in fun and exciting activities. Within the airport itself, you will be able to connect to free Wi-Fi and dine at some world-class restaurants, view cultural performances and learn about the history of Seoul, relax in a spa, race your friends and family at the ice skating rink, and even watch a movie.

Of course, don’t spend all your time at the airport, because Incheon City is just over an hour away, and with the amount of activities you can choose from, you’d want to spend as much time as you can out there be exploring as possible!

How To Get To Incheon

Incheon City is located closer to Incheon Airport than Seoul , however, the transport method there takes a little longer. There are multiple methods to get from the airport to the city, but one of the easiest ways would be to catch the Kangin Transport Bus 306 from Incheon International Airport to Dongincheon Station, and switch to the Wolmido Island Bus 45 to Incheon Station. This should take roughly 1.5 hours in total.  

If you’re planning to do a day trip to Incheon from Seoul, take the Line 1 (Blue Line) from Seoul Station towards Incheon Station. It should be a direct line, and will take just over 70 minutes.

The 9 Best Things To Do In Incheon

1. chinatown  .

Colourful and aesthetic lanterns strung across the building-tops; loud, shrill voices pierce the air as shopkeepers announce their bargains confidently and demand customers to their stalls; the smell of fresh jjajangmyeon noodles permeating through the streets, never wavering and always tantalising.

Expect all of the above, and some more, when you visit Korea’s official Chinatown, located right in the heart of Incheon. Whilst you’d be forgiven if you mistaken this Chinatown to be like most other ones where fusion cuisine and a quick snap with the gorgeous lanterns are the only attractions, you’d be surprised to hear that this Chinatown also hosts a collection of museums, galleries, and green spaces to relax and unwind after hours of exploring the streets.

One of the features that has become extremely popular with visitors is getting a snap of ‘Paeru’, which is the enormous entry gate signifying the beginning of Chinatown. It was famously used in the late 19 th century by local Chinese residents to offer their prayers and to protect the area from ghosts. Also located in Chinatown is the Samgukji Mural Street, a 150m long stretch of gorgeous murals displaying significant events that occurred during the time of the Three Kingdoms (Chinese fable). Lastly, don’t forget to visit the Jjajangmyeong museum.

Whilst there isn’t much information displayed in English, the dioramas and models displayed can easily show you how the dish came about from its inception to the rise of its monumental level of popularity today.

• Access : Head to Incheon Station and use Exit 1. Look for the massive gates across the street (‘Paeru’).

2. Wolmido Island

Wolmido was once an island completely disconnected from mainland Korea, but it is now connected via a gorgeous highway. It is considered one of the best getaways from the city of Incheon, as it is only 1km off the coast of Incheon, and extremely convenient to get to. On the island itself, there is a plethora of activities to do, and whether you’re with your family with young kids, or on a romantic trip for two, there’s actually something for everyone.

The Wolmi Theme Park is an extremely popular attraction amongst kids of all ages. It’s quite unexpected that an island like Wolmi would be home to a decent amusement park, but you’d be surprised. The two-story Viking Ship, the 70m high Hyper Shoot Drop, Tagada Disco, and the 115m Ferries Wheel are just some examples of the rides available. It also hosts a large indoor children’s playground that includes water activities such as water boats and a water ball playing arena.  

Wolmi Traditional Park is a beautifully preserved park that you can visit to see luscious vegetation and greenery up-close, with mountains and the ocean in the distance. When you visit the area, you will see that it has been organised into specific areas, such as the ‘Traditional Garden’ section, which boasts a variety of gardens patterned after famous gardens in Korea’s history. There is also a glass observatory at the top of Wolmi Mountain nearby that offers spectacular views of Incheon Port and International Airport.

• Access : From Incheon Station Exit 1, take a right turn, walk 100m, and then take another right turn. Cross the street towards Wolmi-ro, and take Bus 45 at the ‘Dongil Apartment Bus Stop’, and alight at Wolmi Theme Park Bus Stop (7 stops away).  
• Opening Hours : 10:00am – 10:00pm
• Cost : Rather than one entry fee, there is a different fee for each attraction which start from 4,500 won (4$).

• Address : 329, Wolmi-ro, Jung-gu, Incheon
• Access : From Incheon Station Exit 1, take Bus 115/23/45 and alight at Sunchang Corporation bus stop. The garden is on the left.  
• Opening Hours : 9:00am – 8:00pm

3. Sinpo International Market  

Sinpo International Market is a popular market in Incheon, boasting more than 140 stalls which sell all the Korean food delicacies you can imagine. Locals and tourists flock into this market to just feel the vibe of a bustling market kept alive by dedicated street vendors always producing the best of the best.

If you’re a foodie, you can quite literally spend an entire day here sampling all the different foods across the enormous market, and even if you’re not, the overwhelming number of choices you’ll need to make just might mean you’ll try them all just so that you don’t have to make a decision at all.

Smell the fusion of dried fish mixed with spicy rice cake and kimchi as you walk along the market streets, but make sure you try some different versions of ‘dakgangjeong’, which is Korean deep fried crispy chicken cooked in a sweet, sticky sauce, because that’s exactly what Sinpo is famous for!

• Access : Head to Dongincheon Station (Seoul Subway Line 1), and use Exit 2. Head straight until you see Sinpo International Market on your right.
• Opening Hours : 10:00am – 9:30pm  

4. Eurwangni Beach

Whilst Busan holds the title for the best seaside city in Korea, complete with gorgeous sandy beaches that stretch for miles and miles, Incheon’s very own Eurwangni Beach could give Busan a run for its money. Eurwangni Beach is a cozy white sand beach that’s actually quite close to the Incheon International Airport.

As beach destinations are almost never the reason why anyone would visit Incheon, it is normally quiet and undisturbed, making it the perfect peaceful getaway from the city centre. Families with kids will especially enjoy this beach, and can head there with peace of mind, because the gentle slope of the beach means that the average water depth is only 1.5m.  

If you’re after participating in some fun activities, then Eurwangni has you covered. You can go rock fishing, or rent banana boats and jet skis to ride out into the ocean, and for those of you who are after a great spot to view the night sky, the lack of light pollution in this area at night makes it the best spot in Incheon for astronomical observation. Grab a picnic mat, some friends, and head there at sunset for the vibrant red sky, and stay after twilight for some stargazing.

• Access : From Incheon International Airport, Gate 2A, take Bus 302/306 and get off at Eurwangni Beach.  

5. Sorae Traditional Fish Market  

This fish market in Incheon is renowned across the country, and with it being one of the biggest ports in Korea, it’s not hard to see why. Some of the best seafood comes from Incheon, and for visitors in the area, you can try a sample of it right at Sorae Fish Market.

It’s one of the largest wet markets in the country, but it’s retained its roots from conception many years ago, and there is a nostalgic atmosphere in the air as you walk the rows upon rows of seafood vendors selling their best offerings for the day. Come here to see the widest spectacle of seafood you’ve ever seen before.

For those who visit on an empty stomach, you can even purchase the seafood of your choice, and head to one of the nearby restaurants to have it cooked up in some of the most traditional Korea styles.

For those who are unfamiliar with Korean seafood dishes, some examples of popular ones include: ‘agujjim’, which is braised angler fish served on a bed of dropwort and beansprouts and is often very spicy; ‘goddeunggeo gui’, which is grilled salted mackerel, eaten with rice; ‘haemul panjeon’, which is Korean savoury pancake filled with shellfish, cuttlefish, and various other kids of seafood (best eaten alongside makgeolli, a fizzy rice wine); and of course, the famous ‘jjambbong’, a noodle soup consisting of seafood ranging from squid to mussels and served with chewy noodles in a spicy broth.

• Access : From Dongincheon Station, take Bus 21 to Jemjulpo Station. From Seoul Station, take Bus 1301.
• Hours : 9:00am – 9:00pm  

6. Bupyeong Underground Shopping Centre  

All of Asia is renowned for their underground shopping and markets that are brimming with cheap, budget, and discounted items that you never knew you needed. In Incheon, that market is called the Bupyeong Underground Shopping Centre, and it’s an endless maze of more than 1,400 stores selling everything and anything you could dream of, at a fraction of the price you’d expect.  

This would be a fantastic way to spend a few hours getting random knick-knacks to bring home as souvenirs, but if you ever need an actual purpose to head of this market, then it would be for the Korean cosmetics and beauty products.

There are a multitude of stalls selling all the products that you see Korean celebrities rave on about, attributing to their glow-y dewy skin that seem to be the envy of girls all around the world. Their prices are generally better than many of the shops above ground, so this would be a good chance to stock up on items like face masks and creams.

There are also many stalls dedicated to the unique Korean fashion, so you’d be hard-pressed not to walk out of there with at least one shopping bag.

• Address : 7 Bupyeong-daero, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon
• Access : Head to Bupyeong Station ( not Bupyeong Market Station ), and use Exit 6. It is a 5-minute walk away.
• Hours : Hours vary from stall to stall, but are generally opened from 10:00am – 10:00pm

7. Korea-China Traditional Cultural Centre  

This cultural centre is one of those recommendations that you’ll probably glance at and wonder whether it belongs in an article like this, but in this case, it absolutely is. A six-floor complex founded in 2005 to assist with promoting Chinatown, the centre offers an abundance of (often free) activities for visitors to participate in to understand the relationship between Korea and China better.

Whilst it might not sound like the most exciting thing in the world, grasping the basics of the history behind two completely different countries and how they’re now intertwined is a great way to get to know the world. On certain days, there are performances to view, free movie screenings, Korean language classes, and art exhibitions. Why not spend a few hours here, educating yourself on a bit of Korean and Chinese history?

• Address : 1-2 Hang-dong 1(il)-ga, Jung-gu, Incheon 400-031
• Access : Head to Incheon Station. Exit, and cross the crosswalk (you will see the Jung-gu office on the road sign). Head down the big road for bout 5-minutes until you see the Incheon Chubu Police Station. The Cultural Centre on the opposite side.  
• Hours : 9:00am – 6:00pm
• Cost : Adults: 1,000 won (1$), Children (13 – 18): 700 won, Infant (3 – 12): 500 won

8. Incheon Bridge  

Incheon Bridge is just over 21km long, and holds the title of the longest and largest bridge in Korea. It’s even affectionately referred to by locals as the ‘Pride of Incheon’.

Whilst originally created as a convenient transport route to connect Incheon International Airport and the Songdo International Business District, it has now developed a reputation of its own: tourists from all over the country head to the Incheon Bridge during sunset and sunrise to capture the beauty of the sky changing colours over the massive bridge.

It is an absolutely stunning sight, and one that should not be missed if you’re able to head there during those times. Outside of those times, twilight and night time would be the best time to see the bridge as it comes to life with colourful lights, jarring against the dark ocean.  

• Address : Yeonan-dong, Incheon, South Korea
• Access : You might not want to pay the tolls to drive over the bridge, so head to Oceanscope (the Incheon Bridge Observatory) where you will be able to view the bridge from afar. To get to Oceanscope, head to Central Park Station, and take Exit 2. It is a 10-minute walk away, and it’s free to enter.

9. Songwol-Dong Fairy Tale Village  

As part of a revival project from the Korean Government, certain areas in the cities were rejuvenated to bring life back onto the streets. The Song-wol Dong Fairy Tale Village is a prime example of how they’ve done it right.

Located just a 10-minute walk from the station through Chinatown, it encompasses a small village area full of rainbow murals, pink rooftops, orange doors, and everyone’s favourite animation characters splashed all over the walls, floors and footpaths. It’s the type of area you’d stroll through and your day will be brightened immediately.

Think of it as the Alice in Wonderland world coming to life. Families with kids will especially have a grand time here, as kids could spend hours just running amuck, exploring the streets and houses. Amateur photographers looking for the next best place to photograph with have their work cut out for them here.

They really manage to bring to life depictions of many Disney Princesses and other prime characters in the animation world, and aside from global phenomenon characters, there is a section that pays homage to all the Korean children folklore characters as well, which is a treat for locals and tourists alike.

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the massive rainbow arch at the entrance (so fitting!).

• Access : Head to Incheon Station, and use Exit 2. Head straight for 200m, and then turn right into the Donghwamaeul-gil road. Look for the bright rainbow arch.

As you can now see, Incheon, one of the most easily accessible cities from the airport, is well worth a visit whilst planning a trip to Seoul.

Of course, everyone visiting Korea would want to experience the capital of South Korea in all its glory, and whilst this article is not trying to take away from that, it’s really just trying to suggest that outside of Seoul, there exists an entire city that may just be worlds away given the sheer number of unique and interesting sights to see, activities to do, and foods to eat.

Soraepogu Port

Soraepogu Port was famous during the Japanese occupation period as a salt-producing area with large salt fields and salt transportation on the narrow-gauge trains of the Suwon-Incheon line. At the fish market in the port, freshly caught seafood like shrimp and blue crabs are actively traded. In particular, you can buy a variety of salted fish such as shrimp ( saeu-jeot ), salted anchovies ( myeolchi-jeot ), salted large-eyed herrings ( bandaengyi-jeot ), and salted clams ( jogae-jeot ).

Since Soraepogu Port is located in Nonhyeon-dong, close to the metropolitan area and Sorae Ecology Park, it's crowded with family visitors on weekends. Sorae Ecology Park, built at the location of the salt fields, contains an ecological exhibition hall, a salt field learning center, and a tideland experience center. Nearby attractions also include Sorae History Museum, Sorae Station, and Salt.

Gwangseongbo Fortress

Gwangseongbo Fortress, located in Bureun-myeon, is a fortress that guarded the Ganghwa Strait. This is where the fiercest battles took place during Sinmiyangyo, an invasion of Korea by 3 US warships in 1871. The Best Underrated Places to Visit in Incheon

Yeongjongdo railbike.

This place is like a dream because here, you get to ride your rail bike along a rail track that runs by the West Sea of Korea. It is located near the Incheon Airport on Yeongjongdo island. If you want to go out with your beau for a romantic but fun day, this should be on your list. It is a unique option amongst all the other Incheon Parks. You can ride a rail bike by the sea while appreciating the beauty of Seohae (West Sea). It covers a distance of about 5.6 km from Wolmido Island to Incheon Bridge, where you can enjoy splendid views along the way.

Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village

This spot can be correctly termed as an outburst or riot of colors – the Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village . This cultural village of Incheon is filled with bright and glittery models of fairies, princesses, and pygmies. Murals and paintings dominate the space, making it the ultimate destination for a day out with your kids. This is one of the most off-beat destinations among the other best places to visit in Incheon.

Songdo Central Park

Songdo Central Park is a seawater park situated in Songdo International City, Incheon, amongst many skyscrapers. It is the first city in South Korea to make a lakeside park using seawater.

When the seawater glistens from the setting sun’s last rays, it looks surreal in Solchan Park. The park looks even better post-sundown because the buildings around it light up in the evening. Incheon Grand Park

Eurwangni Beach

16 Islands in Incheon You Can Get To From Seoul This Weekend

Did you know there are more than 70 islands in Incheon? Not all of them are inhabited, but they are out there. When people think of islands in Korea they often think of places to Jeju or Ulleungdo , but there are way more islands than those hot spots. While island hopping in Incheon is a well known getaway option for Koreans, most foreign travelers never even consider Incheon more than the place with Incheon International Airport.

Suffice to say, island hopping is close enough to Seoulites that there is no excuse not to get away. Looking for some great daytrips from Seoul or weekend getaways that are closer than you realize, then head to Incheon. Here is a guide to 16 islands in Incheon you can visit this weekend.

Here are the islands in Incheon you can escape to:

Yeongjongdo Island (영종도)

Sindo, sido, and modo islands (신도, 시도, 모도), muuido island (무의도), jebudo island (제부도), jangbongdo island (장봉도), yeongheungdo island (영흥도), wolmido island (월미도), seonjaedo island (선재도), ganghwado island (강화도), deokjeokdo island (덕적도), soyado island (소야도), gureopdo island (굴업도), baengnyeongdo island (백령도), daecheongdo island (대청도).

If you’re under the impression that you haven’t yet visited any islands in Incheon, I’d counter that you’re very wrong. Everyone entering Korea has probably come through Yeongjongdo Island and then left just as quickly. Home to the Incheon International Airport, most people head straight into Seoul and never stop to look around but there is quite a bit to do on the island that surrounds Korea’s main airport.

From rocky beaches to sandy beaches, a gorgeous gingko tree forest and everything there is to see at the Paradise City Resort , Yeongjongdo Island should be more than just a quick pass through site to Seoul. • Seaside Park (씨사이드파크):  Opened in 2017, this seaside park is really family friendly with a great playground hidden in the middle and nice walking trails. The park is covered in ginkgo trees that burst into a beautiful yellow in the autumn and there are acupressure trails along the edge to walk barefoot in too. Head down to a beautiful pavilion at one end then head down to the coast to find a rail bike and another great playground to play in. 
• Eulwangni Beach (을왕리해수욕장):  The most popular beach on the island, there is sand and plenty of little restaurants to eat in, camping spots, changing rooms, and shower booths. It’s a great day trip beachside spot that’s easy to get to from Seoul.  
• Seonnyeo Rock Beach (선녀바위해수욕장):  My favorite coastline on the island is at this rocky beach. There is some fine sand but there are a lot of rocks to find sea creatures. Make sure to wear some good shoes as the rocks can be pretty sharp with all of the shells and sea things growing on them. Some rocks are big enough and flat enough to camp out on as well making for some great photo opportunities.

Plan A Trip

• Address: 272 Airport-ro, Jung-gu, Incheon (인천광역시 중구 공항로 272)
• Take the subway out to the Incheon International Airport and from there you can access numerous parts of the island via bus or the seaside train you can transfer to.

Known as the ‘three brother islands’, they are connected to each other via bridges and are small enough that you can see all three in one weekend and travel on foot, bike, or the rentable scooters just off the port.

If you only have a day though, rent a bike or a scooter and you can still see the whole place. The route around the islands was designated as the 53rd Haeannurigil, or 53rd Coastal Trail, in Korea in 2019. Learn about this trio of islands in this guide to Sindo, Sido, and Modo Islands.

• Sugi Beach:  A sandy beach that became popular after being a filming location for the drama ‘Full House’, the waters stay pretty shallow here which is good if you have kids. There’s a nice place to stay here too which is where we stayed when we visited the islands. For most of the day, the tide is out really far and it’s a mudflat though so get your water time in during the morning or evening. From the beach, you can see beautiful sunsets and on clear days see as far as Manisan Mountain on Ganghwado Island. 
• Baemikkumi Sculpture Park: When the tide is out at Sugi Beach, head over to this sculpture park on nearby Modo Island. The Baemikkumi Sculpture Park is a must visit on the islands. Created by sculpture Lee Il Ho, there are cool sculptures on the beach and in the garden of a house where you can get coffee and food.

You can get around the islands in a day and don’t need to stay the night at all. This is an easy islandy daytrip option from Seoul. But, there are places to stay on the islands which make for an awesome beachy weekend getaway if you’re in need of that too.

To get to the islands you need to head to Sammok Ferry Terminal (삼목여객터미널). The ferry terminal is located on Yeongjongdo Island. The ferries are weather permitting so if it’s too windy or rainy, ferries may get cancelled. Just something to keep in mind. That said, the majority of people that visit the islands are actually visiting for just a day trip which is completely possible… if there is good weather.

• Address:  63 Yeongjong haeanbuk-ro, 847 beon-gil, Jung-gu, Incheon (인천 중구 영종해안북로847번길 63 삼목여객터미널)
• Ticket Price:  Adults: W2,000; Children: W1,500; Cars: W10,000 (There are other fees depending if you are taking a larger vehicle, etc. but this is the gist.)
• Where To Stay: We decided to stay for the night on the islands and quite enjoyed having a full weekend away. You can find some good places to stay on Agoda.com like Ongjin Hamil Morning Pension
• Notes:  When you purchase your ticket, make sure you get a round trip option. This will ensure you can get back the same day or the next day if you choose to stay the night. The round trip ticket doesn’t require you to tell them which time you’ll be departing, but it will ensure they don’t oversell the spots and you will get on one.
• Time:  10 minutes; the ferry to the island is quite quick so if you’re taking a car be careful not to get out and get back in too late. The islanders and locals and ferry masters are very quick to get people on and off the ferries so if you hold up the line, you will be yelled at.

Muuido Island (무의도) in Incheon is one of the most popular beach getaways from Seoul and it has become a bit more popular since there was a road that was built from the mainland to the island. Since it doesn’t require a ferry trip anymore, it is just a bit busier than before but still oh so fun.

There are two beaches on the island but the one you definitely can’t miss is Hanagae Beach (하나개해수욕장). There is lots of sand, lots of fun, and plenty of sun.

• Hanagae Beach (하나개해수욕장): Hanagae Beach is one of the largest tidal flats in Muuido and the beach is 1 kilometer long with fine grained sand that leads out to mudflats when the tide is low. Most people that head to the beach try to get there early so they can enjoy the water before it recedes and then they dig for conch, crabs, and clams when the water is out. They eat it up and by the time that is done, the water is coming back in again. One of the coolest things about this beachside area is that there are beach cabins that you can rent for the day and even into the night if you want to stay seaside all weekend.
• The Marine Tourism Trail (해상관광탐방로):  If you walk to the southern end of Hanagae Beach, you’ll find a wooden boardwalk that leads into a forest. Just a few steps inside the forest, you have the option to head up on the trails through the forest on Horyonggoksan Mountain or you can head out to a board walk that takes you over the water when the tide is in. It’s a gorgeous walk… though quite hot in the summer heat. The boardwalk is just 550 meters long and was an addition to the area when the bridge to the island was also built in order to attract more tourism.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE A FERRY! FYI, it used to be that the only way to the island was via ferry but a bridge was built in 2019 so if you read that you must take a ferry on another site, just know that it is outdated information.

• Address:  151-8 Hanagae-ro, Jung-gu, Incheon (인천 중구 하나개로 151-8)
• By Public Transportation: Go to Unseo Subway Station and go out of exit 2. Walk around to the main road and go left to the bigger road and cross the street to find the bus stop and catch bus 6-1. The bus will take about 50 minutes but will take you all the way to the beach.
• Admission:  Adults: W2,000; Children: W1,000*
• *The admission fees may be waived. Seems like people used to pay it but we didn’t so not sure when they make people pay or not.
• If you want to stay in huts make sure you bring CASH!  They are W40,000 ~ W50,000 depending on whether it’s high season or low season.

This island is accessible and inaccessible so be aware. There is a road that is revealed when the tide is low twice a day. You can drive in, spend the day, and then drive out again. Don’t miss the low tide though because then you could be stuck until the water recedes again. The island is fairly small so it’d be a fun day trip if you want to do something different.

There are a few options to check out like The Falcon Rocks (매바위). At the tip of the island are three massive rocks. They’re completely engulfed by water during high tide, but can be seen up close and personal during low tide.

You can also walk on the boardwalk (해안산책로). There is an 800-meter-long boardwalk that goes along the beachside of the island. There are installations, benches, and of course the ocean views to enjoy. There are also cafes and restaurants along the way so it’s a good connector if you want to walk and just decide as you go where you want to stop for a rest, a view, or some food.

Then, there are mudflats. Since it is the west coast, there are mud flats and everything fun that goes along with them like hunting for sea creatures and shellfish when the tide is out. If mud flats aren’t your thing, there are also the mountains of Dangsan (당산) and Tapjaesan (탑재산) for a bit more exercise. Head up to get that higher viewpoint of the ocean outstretching into the distance. There’s even a small amusement park on the island if you’ve got kids and are looking for something fun to do with them

• Address : 190-2 Jebu-ri, Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do (location of a park on the island).
• As I said, you need to be aware of the tide schedule. But to get to the island, you can catch a bus from either Sadang or Suwon Station. Once you get to the entrance road to the island, there’s a shuttle bus to help you across. Having a car or renting one would be ideal for this trip, but it’s definitely possible to do it with public transportation. The bus runs at 30-minute intervals and the last bus leaves Jebudo at around 8.30 PM. 

Jangbongdo means ‘Long Beach’ and is known for camping, hiking, and bike riding. Jangbongdo is a popular island for the trekkers among us. There are seven trekking courses along the ridge and coast of this island so a lot of people head out there for one-day trekking adventures. The seven routes include: Sinseonnorigil (8.2 km), Haneulnadeul-gil (3.2 km), Gubineomeo-gil (4 km), Jangbonghaean-gil (4 km), Yadalineo-gil (4.6 km), Handeulhaean-gil (3.5 km), and Jangbongbomul-gil (4.4 km).

Except for the 1st and 2nd courses across the central part of the island, they are all coastal walks along the sea. The most popular courses are the 2nd and 4th courses. Most people take a local bus from the port to the final stop at the beach, walk along the coastal road, and then take the path up and over. You could either trek for three and a half hours, or for up to seven hours if you’re really into it.

As a mysterious aside, there are numerous stories about ghosts on the beach on the island and these ghosts tell of good fishing spots or are known to bring wealth. More recently though, it was discovered that the ghost lights were produced from the element phosphorous which was being given off from beneath the water. This element, additionally, attracted fish to swarm to eat the nutrients and thus of course would become good fishing spots. Anyway, ghosts or phosphorous, it’s a fun sight to see.

• There are one or two ships heading to Jangbong-do almost every hour from 7:10am to 8:40 pm. It takes about 40 minutes to depart from Sammok Port (삼목항) and arrive at Jangbongdo via Sindo Island (신도). Right at the port, you’ll want to visit the tourist center to get directions and maps detailing the trekking courses. They have much more information there than you’ll find online and will be up to date with any changes in paths or issues that may have come up due to weather. 

Yeongheungdo has 17 trekking trails that take visitors along the coast as well as inland. Each trek is said to have a different feel it is said. This island is good for a whole weekend away with camping and trekking in mind. Yeongheungdo is actually relatively easy to get to if you’ve got a car as it’s connected to the mainland via a bridge.

This is a popular island for campers and has five registered campsites for tourists to the island. If that’s not your jam though, it’s also got some glamping options too. The exact address I’m giving you is for a beach to visit since the island doesn’t actually have a specific address of it’s own. This is one of the more popular islands in Incheon for getaways as mentioned. They see about three million visitors a year.

• Simnipo Beach (십리포해수욕장): This beach on the northern end of the island is popular because of the hornbeam habitat that is there. 100 years ago, locals on the island planted several kinds of trees hoping to protect their crops from the strong ocean winds but the only trees to survive were the hornbeams. Today, this area is labeled a “Rare Coastal Plant Zone” because of this. It’s a really interesting sight to see.
• Address: 420-26 Yeongheungbuk-ro, Yeongheung-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon ( 인천광역시 옹진군 영흥면 영흥북로 420-26)
• Take a subway out to Oido Subway Station. From there you can take bus 790 out to the island. After entering the island, you can transfer to another local bus to get to the different parts of the island that you’re looking to see.

Wolmido is one of the easiest islands to get to out in Incheon and since it features a boardwalk and amusement park, it’s one of the most touristy of the islands as well. You can easily get to this island via the Seoul subway system too so there’s really no excuse not to go at least once.

Besides the amusement park and boardwalk side of the island that looks out to sea, there is also the Wolmi Traditional Park on the island. Designed as an ancient Korean garden with a Hanok house, garden, and ponds, the environment is really calming. 

• There are a few different ways to get to Wolmido Island. Easily accessible by car if that’s how you are traveling. The island is also accessible via the Seoul subway system. Take a subway out to Incheon Station and outside of exit 1, you can get local bus 2, 10, 23, or 45 to go out to Wolmido. Just outside of the subway station is also the station for the Wolmido Sea Train if you want to hop on to that to get a ride and sea the island from above including the largest mural in the world!

About 500 meters east of Daebudo, Seonjaedo is connected to the mainland via the Seonjae Bridge. The island is also connected to Yeongheungdo Island to the west via the Yeongheung Bridge. The island was originally known as ‘Soudo’ and ‘Dogudo’ during the Goryeo period into the Joseon Dynasty. This is a narrow island that sits between Daebudo Island and Yeongheungdo Island so most people are going to the former or the latter but not stopping in the middle though you certainly can!

• Take a subway out to Oido Subway Station. From there you can take bus 790 out to the narrow island. Get off at the beginning or the end depending on which beach you want to check out.

Another popular island for day trips from Seoul, Ganghwado is the fifth largest island in Korea so it’s not unknown in the least. There are ancient artifacts like the Goindal Rocks that were designated as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and chic cafes. • Haeden Museum of Art (강화도 해든 뮤지엄):  An interesting art museum on the island. If you’re looking for something to get inside away from the heat in the summer or want to see some interesting art and mirror corridors, this is where  you should go. Check out what their current exhibition is.
• Ganghwa Anglican Church of Korea & Yongheunggung Palace (용흥궁):  The church was first constructed by Bishop Charies John Corfe in 1900 and was named for Saint Peter and Paul. The church is quite interesting and the wooden interior will give you all of those old western church vibes. Just next to the church is the palace where King Cheoljong, a Joseon ruler who reigned from 1849 to 1863, lived until his ascension to the throne.
• Huae Dondae (후애돈대):  This Dondae is one of many built in 1679 by 4,300 military, 8000 Buddhist monks and soldiers from three provinces. The platforms held four cannons. You can find a few of these sites on the island as you drive leisurely around.
• Joyang Bangjik (조양방직):  Joyang Bangjik is an old textile factory that has been turned into a very cool cafe complex. Walk through the front gate and you’re welcomed into the cafe on your right where you can buy a coffee or juice and then head into the main building to find a seat among the numerous options. Take a seat at the long benches in the center or spread out at the tables that are along the walls.

There are a few different ways to get to Ganghwado Island. Hopping in the car is the easiest if you have one.

• By Bus:  From Hapjeong Subway Station, go to the bus stop in the middle of the road between exits 10 and 5. Take bus #3000. It goes by 34 stops and takes about an hour and twenty minutes.

Deokjeok-myeon has 42 uninhabited and inhabited islands and Deokjeokdo is the largest of the inhabited islands and acts as the passage to all of the others through boat transfers. Deokjeokdo means ‘Island of Virtue’ and is considered one of the most beautiful and most tranquil islands in Incheon.

There is everything from trekking and swimming to fishing on the island to enjoy. This is an up-and-coming island that has been gaining popularity with local tourists in recent years.

• Neungdong Jagal Beach: This beach is beautifully covered in black pebbles, or the ‘jagal’, in all sizes. Koreans will tell you to walk barefoot on the stones for a natural acupressure effect. The scenery is said to be rather exotic with red rugosa roses on the sandy hills and a thick reed forest at the entrance. 
• Seopori Pine Tree Trail: Walk along this trail that backs Seopori Beach and is lined for 500 meters with sand dunes and pine trees. This area was awarded first prize in the ‘2010 National Beautiful Forest Competition’ for having such a beautiful traditional village forest. The trees are over 200 years old and it’s said this is the place for forest bathing on the island.
• Bijobong Peak: If you want to take in those breathtaking views out over islands, inlets, and water, then you need to head up to Bijobong Peak. There is a well maintained trekking trail to take travelers up to Buksubong Peak and Bijobong Peak. It’s not incredibly difficult and you can often see families with young children on the trails. Walk through red pine trees, Korean hornbeams, and oriental oak trees to find the peak with all of the views. Descend back down to Batjireum Beach and find a wooden deck for yet more beautiful views.

• Make your way out to the Yeonan Port Terminal in Incheon first. From there, you can get a ferry out to Deokjeokdo Island. They fun four times a day to the island and three times a day returning to the mainland.. The first ferry runs at 8:00am, then 9:10am, 9:50am, and 3:00pm. The ferries from Deokjeokdo Island returning to the mainland run at 9:30am, 3:30pm, 4:30pm. The ferry takes about an hour and a half.
• Where To Stay: A lot of people camp out or stay for the weekend. There are a few places listed on Agoda like Ongjin Goldstar which look simple but good.

Just 500 meters south of Deokjeokdo Island and connected via the Deokjeok-Soya Bridge, Soyado is an easy addition to a trip out that way. It’s pretty similar to Deokjeokdo Island and is actually nicknamed ‘Small Deokjeokdo Island’. The highest peak at the center of the island is Guksabong Peak at 158 meters and then there are other peaks on the island forming a nice mountain range to walk along.

• Tteppuri Beach: Named for the reeds that thrive there, Tteppuri Beach is a beach, similar to the Jindo sea parting with its own miracle parting. Soyado Island is actually one of nine places in Korea with this sea parting that creates a path in the ocean. The path here is relatively short, but is a distinct path. Find out when the tide goes out to see it. 
• Note that you can get to Soyado Island on a boat bound for Deokjeokdo Island from Incheon Port Passenger Terminal. For the return though, make sure you’re there earlier than the scheduled departure time as arriving boats tend to depart immediately after all passengers that are waiting climb aboard.

Called the ‘Korean Galapagos’, Gureopdo Island is known for it’s unpolluted natural beauty and thus trekkers and backpackers love it. Trekkers hike slowly along the Gaemeori Ridge enjoying the views and if they’re lucky, may spot a herd of wild deer that call the island home. This is an island that will make you feel like you’ve left Korea all together when you visit.

• Gaemeori Hill:  The hills on this island are all below 100 meters in height, so the trekking that has become quite popular here isn’t so difficult and offers beautiful views with sea breezes. 
• Gureopda Island Beach: Find soft fine sand and clear water on this beach that stretches out before the clear transparent sea.
• Boats to this island have a different schedule on the odd and even numbered days of the month so make sure you check closely when you are hoping to arrive and depart. The trip is just under an hour on an odd numbered day but will be more than 2 hours on an even numbered day so keep that in mind. Again though, check an updated schedule if you plan to go.

The northernmost island in South Korea, I saw a picture of this island last year and it is amazing looking. Located just below the demarcation line, on a clear day you can see North Korea. It takes four hours to reach this island from the Passenger Terminal at Incheon Coastal Wharf. Baengnyeong Daecheong National Geopark was established in 2019 and since then, the island has been gaining more interest from visitors. The island has just under 6,000 residents and 177 households on the island so there are some established places here.

This area is also home to the spotted earless seal that travel freely between North and South Korea. Look out to see and you might be able to spot them.

The original name of the island was Gokdo Island. There are two stories about why the name was changed from Gokdo Island to the present Baengnyeongdo Island. The first story is that the name was changed to describe the island’s shape like a white ibis (Baek) with two wings spread out flying in the sky (Nyeong).

The second story is that, a long time ago, in a village on an island in the Yellow Sea, a scholar fell in love with the district magistrate’s daughter. They promised to get married, but, learning this, the magistrate disapproved and sent his daughter off to an isolated island. The scholar looked everywhere for her, but to no avail. Then, one day, he saw a white crane in a dream, and the bird flew down with a white paper in its beak and gave it to him. Surprised, he woke up to find a piece of paper with an address written on it. The scholar went on a long journey to locate the written address. He took a boat in Jangsangot, came to Baengnyeongdo Island, and found the magistrate’s daughter! They then lived happily ever after. As the information of the island was given by a white crane (‘baekhak’), the island was named ‘Baekhakdo’ or ‘White Crane Island,’ which has eventually been altered to ‘Baengnyeongdo Island.

• Ferries head to Baengnyeongdo from Incheon’s Yeonan pier, departing at 8:00am, 8:50am and 1:00pm; return ferries are at 8:00am, 1:00pm and 1:50pm.

Located near Socheongdo Island and on the way to Baengnyeongdo Island, this island is known for the beautiful beaches. This island is actually nicknamed the ‘beach island’ or the ‘treasure island’. During the Joseon Dynasty, this island was used for farming and then in 1428, a cattle ranch was established on the island as well. 

• Nongyeo Beach: On the northwestern coast of Daecheongdo Island, the reflections on the water here are breathtaking. The sand is firm here and no footprints are left as you walk over it, but the rocks and water here are just stunning.
• Seopungbaji Rock: The name means the rock that protects from the winds from the Yellow Sea with all its body. Surrounded by cliffs 60 to 70 meters high, you won’t feel like you’re in Korea standing up and looking out from here. Visitors head here to catch boats out to sea for fishing excursions where they can eat the freshest catch. 
• Okjukdong Sand Desert: Called the “Sahara of Korea”, this sandy desert is 2 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. The sand dune is pretty stunning for sitting on an island such as it is. Look out for the quirky camel statues to take photos with.
• Ferries headed for Baengnyeongdo Island (백령도) stop at this island too.

There are some spectacular places to visit in Korea and when it comes to traveling around, Incheon should absolutely not be overlooked. As people tend to head to the east coast or southern seaside areas, Incheon is quietly sitting nearby with breathtaking sites and plenty of islands to choose from. On the saddle-back beaches, the water dropped withing just a few feet of the beachs, into a very deep, crystal clear blackness. And than those two small beaches, the granite island rose from the water up the sheer cliff sides of the peaks, with the base of the cliffs being under-cut by the coursely lapping waves.

…Further, I seem to recall that it took about an hour to get to the island from the mainland. So assuming the boat was doing 17K per hour (the cruising speed of a LCVP of that era), that would put the island somewhere between 12k and 20k from shore with a 25% margin of error.

Can you help me find an island we used to visit when I was a young teen in the 1960s? It is located somewhere off the coast of Inchon. We used to go as part of school trips, taking a World-War-II era landing craft that fit about 20-30 of us. The trips took us out over the horizon where we continued out for some time after the mainland had disappeared. The island stood alone, with no other islands in sight. It had one large peak that stood about 100-200 meters high, and one smaller peak about half that size. The tops of the peaks themselves were about 100 meters apart. The peaks sloped down toward one another to a saddle-back beach that ran between the peaks, from one side of the island to the other. The sand consisted of quarts pebbles about the size of peas that were a bit sharp and uncomfortable on the feet. The sand stretched for about 75 meters from the beach on one side of the island to the beach on the other side, and stretched about 100 meters from the base on one peak to the other. I would not say that the big peak was any more than 400 meters around its base at the water’s edge. Except for that beach, there was no other access to the island, as there were sheer cliffs all the way around the ipeaks except for the saddle-back beaches. There were no buildings, antenna, or any other signs of mankind on the island at that time. It would be great if I knew the name of the island so that I could refresh those childhood memories by “visiting” the island virtually through Google Earth and image searches on Google. 'K-Royal Culture Festival' Draws Over 600,000 Visitors to 5 Major Palaces, Jongmyo Shrine

SEOUL, May 9 (Yonhap) -- During the 10th anniversary of the 'K-Royal Culture Festival,' it has been tallied that over 600,000 visitors flocked to Seoul's major palaces and Jongmyo Shrine.

According to the Cultural Heritage Administration's Royal Palace and Jongmyo Shrine Headquarters and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, a total of 601,135 visitors participated in the K-Royal Culture Festival held from April 27th to May 5th.

This figure includes visitors to the five major palaces such as Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung, and Gyeonghuigung, as well as participants in performances and experiential events.

Among them, foreigners numbered 155,291, accounting for approximately 1/4 (25.8%) of all visitors. This represents nearly a threefold increase compared to last year (55,424).

A foundation official explained, "During the festival period, we expanded the admission passes to the five major palaces without restrictions and increased programs tailored for foreigners to attract international visitors."

The K-Royal Culture Festival, held at Seoul's major palaces and Jongmyo Shrine, takes place twice a year in spring and autumn. This year's autumn event is scheduled to open on October 9th.

Arrested US soldier to be held for two months in Russia on theft charges

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Army soldier arrested in Russia last week was being held in a pretrial detention facility, the Army said Tuesday. Russian reports said he would be held for two months pending an investigation.

Staff Sgt. Gordon Black flew to Vladivostok, a Pacific port city, to see his girlfriend and was arrested after she accused him of stealing from her, according to U.S. officials and Russian police.

The Army confirmed Tuesday that he had not sought clearance for the international travel and it was not authorized by the Defense Department. Under Pentagon policy, service members must get clearance for any international travel from a security manager or commander and that was not done.

The State Department strongly advises U.S. citizens not to go to Russia, and given the war in Ukraine and ongoing threats to the U.S. and its military, it is extremely unlikely he would have been granted approval.

The regional branch of the Russian Interior Ministry said in a statement Tuesday that Black and his girlfriend had a conflict and she reported him to the police, claiming that she found cash missing after he stayed with her.

The statement said Black was arrested at a hotel in Vladivostok.

Russian media reports quoted Elena Oleneva, a spokesperson for Vladivostok courts, as saying the city’s Pervomaisky District Court on Friday ordered Grant held in custody until July 2. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

The U.S. Army is also conducting an administrative investigation into what happened.

Black was on leave and in the process of returning to his home base at Fort Cavazos in Texas from South Korea, where he had been stationed at Camp Humphreys with the Eighth Army. The U.S. officials said Black, who is married, met his girlfriend in South Korea. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel details.

“Official and leave travel is currently restricted pursuant to the DoD Foreign Clearance Guide.” said Cynthia Smith, an Army spokeswoman, adding that “There is no evidence Black intended to remain in Russia” after his leave time ended.

Smith said Black enlisted in the Army in 2008, and deployed to Iraq from October 2009 through September 2010, and to Afghanistan from June 2013 until March 2014. He is an infantry soldier.

According to Smith, Black signed out for his move back home and, “instead of returning to the continental United States, Black flew from Incheon, Republic of Korea, through China to Vladivostok, Russia, for personal reasons.”

According to the U.S. officials, the Russian woman had lived in South Korea, and last fall she and Black got into some type of domestic dispute or altercation. After that, she left South Korea. It isn’t clear if she was forced to leave or what, if any, role Korean authorities had in the matter.

Smith said that an official from the Russian Interior Ministry informed the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on Friday that Black was arrested on Thursday in Vladivostok, “for theft of personal property.” The embassy and Eighth Army notified Black’s family of his arrest.

Russia is known to be holding a number of Americans in its jails, including corporate security executive Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The U.S. government has designated both as wrongfully detained and has been trying to negotiate for their release.

Others detained include Travis Leake , a musician who had been living in Russia for years and was arrested last year on drug-related charges; Marc Fogel, a teacher in Moscow, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison, also on drug charges; and dual nationals Alsu Kurmasheva and Ksenia Khavana .

The arrest comes less than a year after American soldier Travis King sprinted into North Korea across the heavily fortified border between the Koreas. North Korea later announced that it would expel King , who was returned to the U.S. He was eventually charged with desertion.
