24 Hour Movie Marathon!

A movie marathon blog in search of awesome

Star Trek Movie Marathon

Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship, Enterprise, its…oh…50-or-so-year mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new opportunities to make movies and TV shows, to boldly go to the couch and movie marathon like no one has before!

Ok. A little hokey I guess. But a Star Trek movie marathon? Beam me up! Of course, I say this since I’m mostly thinking of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . I might be forgetting little details like, oh, say Star Trek V: The Final Frontier or Star Trek: Generations .

Regardless, Star Trek has massive staying power, and its only being revitalized further by the rebooted movie series. You can catch up on almost all of them in a mere 24 hours. Only the latest release, Star Trek: Beyond, doesn’t quite fit in. May you watch long and prosper!

Star Trek Movie Marathon Movies

Star trek: the motion picture.

My take: Take Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey and put them in a blender, and what do you get? A lot of looking out the window at spacey stuff. Also features a hot bald chick.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

My take: Captain Kirk expresses his disapproval of Kahn. Brain-eating worms also make an appearance.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

My take: This movie bucks standard utilitarian ethics theory and claims that “The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many”. This is why this movie is shown in so many basic college ethics courses.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

My take: The crew of Star Trek goes back to the 80s! Look at all the wackiness! Why, there’s an annoying guy with a boom box! That Spock doesn’t take any crap! Har! Kill me.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

My take: The movie provides the definitive answer to the age-old question: “What does God need with a Starship?”

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

My take: Klingons recite Shakespeare. Sadly, Star Trek VII, in which the Romulans do ballet, was never made.

Star Trek: Generations

My take: Captain Kirk and Captain Picard meet briefly thanks to some time ribbon or something. It almost had a point.

Star Trek: First Contact

My take: The Borg assimilate earth by going back in time and messing with history. Only the crew of the Enterprise can stop it. Unless they tried the Borg did the same thing again a little later. Ah well.

Star Trek: Insurrection

My take: Mean guys with bad skin complexion cause trouble on a paradise planet. It’s like “Revenge of the Nerds”, but the nerds are evil and it isn’t high school.

Star Trek: Nemesis

My take: Captain Picard’s nemesis is revealed, and its himself: NEGA-PICARD. Or maybe I’m thinking of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”.

My take: Kirk and crew punch and karate chop their way to victory! Except for the planet Vulcan being destroyed. That was a bad day.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

My take: Captain Kirk follows no regulations and nearly gets his crew killed a dozen times. Thankfully Starfleet is attacked and most of the captains are killed. Job security!

AMC Theatres Star Trek Marathon

Not only does this year mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series , but Paramount Pictures also has Star Trek Beyond hitting theaters next month. It's still under a month away from release, but if you're looking to see the movie a little bit early, AMC Theatres literally has just the ticket for you.

The theater chain will be hosting a Star Trek marathon of all three of the films from the rebooted sci-fi franchise, and that includes seeing Star Trek Beyond before nearly everyone else. Find out more about the AMC Theatres Star Trek marathon after the jump.

Here's the list of participating theaters, all screening the films in IMAX (though we're not sure if some of them are LieMAX theaters or not ):

  • AMC Burbank 16
  • AMC Metreon 16
  • AMC Mission Valley 20
  • AMC Orange 30
  • AMC Westminster Promenade 24

Tickets are on sale right now with links to buy them at the corresponding theaters available right here . For the price of $29.99, in addition to your ticket you'll get a lanyard, exclusive poster (yet to be revealed) and a Star Fleet patch. With the goodies included, I guess that's not that bad of a deal.

Seeing Star Trek on the big screen again sounds like a good time, though sitting through Star Trek Into Darkness again probably isn't desirable for most fans. While the sequel was entertaining, the story was messy and convoluted and it wasn't anywhere near as good as the first one. Here's hoping director Justin Lin gets the franchise back on track.

Plus, it looks like Rihanna may have a treat for Star Trek fans tomorrow as well:

Star Trek Beyond," the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin ("The Fast and the Furious" franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In "Beyond," the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Star Trek Beyond is set to arrive on July 22 .

'Star Wars' marathon: All 9 movies coming to 13 theaters nationwide May 4th. Here's where

UPDATE: The Skywalker Saga Marathon will only appear in 13 theaters nationwide. See below for more details.

May the fourth be with you . In honor of this year's "Star Wars Day" celebration on May 4, Jedis and Sith Lords alike can spend most of a day in a theater watching the entire epic saga in a row on the big screen, as intended.

LucasFilm announced the Skywalker Saga Marathon Thursday on its website. "This will be a Stars Wars Day long remembered," it began.

While "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, will be widely released, some locations are reporting that the 24-hour Skywalker Saga Marathon will only be available in 13 theaters nationwide.

"The Majestic is one of only 13 locations across the nation hosting this spectacular event," said the Marcus Theaters , "and the only one in Wisconsin."

Along with the mindblowing daylong spectacle of empires, Jedis, princesses, lightsabers, space battles, beeping droids and the eternal struggle of good vs. evil, the marathon also will include an exclusive look at "The Acolyte," a new Disney+ series set during the High Republic era, the release said. Anyone attending the marathon will receive a special limited edition poster.

"We would be honored if you would join us for this rare opportunity to see  Star Wars  as it was intended: on the big screen!" the release said.

Here's what you need to know.

What is the Skywalker Saga Marathon?

All nine episodic "Star Wars" movies shown in a row, along with an exclusive look at the 8-episode Disney+ show "The Acolyte," coming June 4.

Which Star Wars movies will be shown? In what order?

The movies will be shown in chronological order, so:

  • " Star Wars: The Phantom Menace "
  • " Star Wars: Attack of the Clones "
  • " Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith "
  • " Star Wars: A New Hope "
  • " Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back "
  • " Star Wars: Return of the Jedi "
  • " Star Wars: The Force Awakens "
  • " Star Wars: The Last Jedi "
  • " Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker "

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will not be included.

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets go on sale at some theaters 12 p.m. EDT, Friday, March 22, 2024.

Where is the 'Skywalker Saga Marathon' being shown?

So far some of the theaters advertising the event are:

  • Arizona: Harkins at Tempe Marketplace 16 in Tempe
  • El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood
  • Regal Irvine Spectrum in Irvine
  • Alamo Drafthouse New Mission in San Francisco
  • Illinois: AMC River East 21 in Chicago
  • Kansas: AMC Town Center 20 in Kansas City
  • Massachusetts: Showcase Cinema de Lux Legacy Place , Dedham
  • New York: AMC Empire 25 in, New York City
  • Pennsylvania: Regal US King of Prussia in Philadelphia
  • Texas: Cinemark West Plano XD and ScreenX in Plano
  • Utah: Megaplex Jordan Commons in Sandy
  • Virginia: AMC Tysons Corner 16 in McLean
  • Wisconsin: Marcus Theatre's Majestic Cinema in Milwaukee

Prices range from $45 to well over a hundred dollars, depending on what other services, photo ops, costume parties, and food deals each theater is providing.

Fortunately, all the movies are still available on Disney+ with a subscription, so there's nothing stopping you from hosting your own massive marathon.

How long does it take to watch all 9 'Star Wars' movies?

Strap in and get the big bucket of popcorn. Watching all nine episodic "Star Wars" movies straight through would take you approximately 20 hours and 22 minutes, according to movie ticket site Fandango.

Why May 4? What is Star Wars Day?

Fans celebrate Star Wars Day on May the 4th because it sounds close to the classic phrase, "May the force be with you" from the very first movie, "Star Wars: A New Hope."

One of the first appearances was in a London newspaper when it congratulated Britain’s new prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, on her first day of office. The full-page ad read "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!"

May the 4th be with you: How today came to be 'Star Wars Day'

Over the years the catchy (and later, highly hashtaggable) phrase caught on and fans began devoting the day to Star Wars-related celebrations. LucasFilms has often timed "Star Wars" releases, announcements and events for May 4.

Syfy Memorial Day Weekend Star Trek Movie Marathon + Watch Fans Hold Their Own “Trekathon”

| May 27, 2011 | By: Anthony Pascale 68 comments so far

Video: Fans Hold Their Own “Trekathon”

Last weekend a group of friends in Los Angeles sat down to watch all eleven Star Trek feature films in a row, grading each along the way. Watch the time lapse video here:

The Trekathon was organized by Athena Stamos and her boyfriend Brad Hansen. The idea actually came about after they and their friends did a marathon of all 25 James Bond movies earlier in the year ( you can watch that on YouTube ). Both Stamos and Hansen are contributors to CommanderBond.net . Stamos tells TrekMovie that as big Trek fans, Star Trek was the natural choice for their next marathon.

Syfy’s Memorial Day Weekend Star Trek Movie Marathon

Syfy can help you do your own “Trekathon” as they kicks off summer with a Star Trek movie marathon. Over the weekend of May 28-30th Syfy will air all the original series movies and all the TNG movies except Insurrection . There are also a couple of TNG episodes thrown in. Here is the full schedule. You can fill in the gap by renting the remaining two Star Trek films and remember the 2009 Star Trek film is available on Netflix streaming.

Have you ever done your own Trekathon?

What about you? Have you ever watched all the Star Trek movies in a row in a short period of time? Does watching the films one after each other change perceptions of some of the films? Tell us about it in the comments below.

Glad to see some love for Star Trek III.

Boy I wish I had Syfy… How come no Insurrection?

Typical SyFy (pronounced per “Big Bang Theory”) programming. Wouldn’t a marathon be more enjoyable IN ORDER?! Frakking mindless dolts!

I did this at Kent State, all the movies up to Generations were shown I think it was at the time, talk about getting a headache. It was fun though.

Glad to see Syfy keeping with Scifi. Most especially Star Trek. With some Tng and Enterprise. I guess they have gotten the message from all of us fans. I may do my own marathon and watch all of the Trek Movies on Blurey. Except for TMP as I prefer the Directors Edition. Wish they would get that on Blurey.

Nemesis and NO Insurrection?? WTF? At least INS was entertaining! At a marathon years ago, after viewing TWOK and TSFS consecutively, it was the consensus that TSFS was in fact the better film…

I remember in September 2006 having a star trek day at home for trek’s 40th birthday

Had three tv’s, the pc and a portable dvd player in different rooms in the house with different trek series/movies on all day in the different rooms.

The brother and myself were alternating between rooms watching bits here and there.

It sounds pure naff, but it was an absolutely great day. So cool switching between the rooms.

Have I ever had a Trekathon? Yes,and it was awesome! :)

My life is a trek marathon heh

I’ve never really done it but since I own them all on DVD/Blu ray now (series and movies) I easily could whenever I wanted to.

In fact I’d probably just watch them on blu ray over on SyFy. I was VERY disappointed one time when I turned on SyFy, they had First Contact on and it was in SD. I was like “screw this, I’m gonna go put my blu-ray in!”

Back in the early nineties I worked in an appliance store like Best Buy. I took ST’s II, III, and IV and edited them so that they played as one long movie and played it on all 100 TV’s every day for months. I loved that job!

Meh… the Canadian chanel “Space” did all the Trek movies (‘cept the new one) last weekend (Victoria Day longweekend) all weekend.

Qapla’

Wish i had friends around here who would do that with me =(

Back when there were only 9 Trek movies, I watched them all in one marathon, because my Math teacher didn’t believe I could. I got up at 3 AM and finished Insurrection around 9 PM. I actually tried this once and failed, not because I was unwilling, but because my VCR broke halfway through Star Trek VI.

The second time it worked, though.

God, I want to do this!

No, I have never had a Trek marathon. Because my one friend hates Star Trek and doesn’t want anything to do with it, and all the Trekkies I meet are at least 20 years older than me, and I would feel stupid if I sat and watched all the films myself.

Ugh…I’m a closet Trekkie against my will.

Either way, I MUST watch first contact. Bad me for not buying it for 6 dollars when I could have.

#10,Rah, :)

Is it just me, but I like Final Frontier … it’s everthything I like, the troika and proper sci-fi. Just the end is crap – and even so a guy pretending to be god is crap .. love it.

20. I agree and here’s why.

1. Everyone’s together and where they should be. (Proper stations)

2. We have the Enterprise. (1701-A, but that’s OK)

3. Bridge config just like TOS.

4. TOS audio effects. ( Bridge, Shuttlecraft, etc.)

5. TMP soundtrack.

STV may have had bad special effects and anticlimactic ending, but I think that it was more like an episode of TOS than any other movie. Just pure Star Trek. Loved it.

Thanks for embracing the good in ST V!

In addition to everything you mentioned…we have:

Assault phasers Jerry Goldsmith score Shat’s hot daughter and Harve Bennett cameos “I lost a brother once. I was lucky enough to get him back.” “I’ve always known, I’ll die alone” and….Kirk Fu!!!!!

Just thinking about this makes my butt hurt.

And what is this thing you call “friends”? What is that? Oh! You must mean humans who will descend upon your dwelling and consume mass quantities of green beer and snackage…

Trek 5 is a good rek Movie. May be at the bottom of the best list but still is good Trek. I wish that paramount or CBS would let the Shat or themsleves redo the Fx for Trek 5. That would make it a much better movie. Example. TMP was a good movie but with the Directors Edition it is now much better.

Why are they not showing them in order? The dorks!!!

Done these a few times w/ movies & series. After the Star Trek Borg dvd collection I watched “The Neutral Zone”, then the borg eps from TNG, VOY, & First Contact, & “Regeneration” from ENT. That was a fun day.

Bourbon and Beans. Part of my Memorial day menu. Lol.

lol everybody left for Generations in the vid hahahah

They probably left because of the effects of the bourbon and beans…either that or they are members of the BBK movement…

Channel 4 did this in the UK last year, no big deal…

Looking at the time stamp, the lighting and the changes in clothing, it appears that Generations was the following morning.

Insurrection worse than Final Frontier? Teh Frak?

I miss Twilight Zone marathons. Wish ScyFy was doing that too.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up.

I always tend to put III and IV together and watch those.

II can be seen on its own

TMP is awesome by itself

V is my favorite

VI is a great stand alone

VIII is great!

IX is ok for me

X is ok for me

XI is great!

I agree that Star Trek II and First Contact are the best followed closely by Star Trek (2009), but there is no way Insurrection is the worst! It is the one TNG movie that seems most like an expanded episode of the series. Plus it was cool for Picard to finally get some action. I would say Generations or Nemesis were worse than Insurrection.

What an epic adventure! I’d love to do this with friends and fans one day!

And it was the only movie that had an opening “teaser” before the credits….adding to the effect of a TOS episode.

In 1991 the Crest Theater in Sacramento hosted a 25th Anniversary marathon of all the Trek films relased to that point. The films ran back-to-back with a short meal break between III and IV. Those of us who stayed all the way through received little pins with the words, “Sit long and prosper!”

39. Right. Forgot about that.

BTW, I was just wondering. Was TMP the first movie based on a TV show?

I don’t understand why people like Insurrection. It was a total stinker. Writing, effects, and ESPECIALLY editting… just terrible. Nemesis may have felt a little heartless, but it’s infinitely more watchable than Insurrection, which is just complete crud, the low point of the franchise.

Yes, it was like a two part episode. But a very poor two parter, like how when you look at Time’s Arrow now without the veneer of childhood and the fun of it, it’s actually an incredibly cheesy episode.

Insurrection thoroughly deserved it’s place on the bottom of the list. Say what you like about The Final Frontier, but it at least had snappy dialogue and some great troika scenes.

As for the first Film based on a TV show, I can’t be sure that it was the first, but there was a Doctor Who film (roughly based on the series, with similarly named characters played by different actors, the same props and aliens, but significantly altered backstory and framing) made in 1965.

I saw all 10 films between an early viewing of STXI and the actual release (when I saw STXI for the 2nd time) – about 5 days, I think. I’ll do it again for STXII – if it ever comes out! I am watching all the HP films with other fans as a countdown to DH2 starting Sunday via Twitter and Livestream. Check out hpmoviereview.wordpress.com if you are interested.

I love TREK V, warts and all, for many of the reasons cited above. I’ll take it over any of the TNG movies.

I can’t believe FIRST CONTACT tied for first! (Which is to say, I can’t believe it made it that high, not that it “didn’t win.”) Well, OK … I can believe it … but I also lament it. :-P Some nice scenes and moments in isolation, but it wasn’t what I wanted from a TNG film — especially not the “Borg Queen.”

#12 Tiberius – “An explosive combination”

Yes, I once played the movies, 1-9 consecutively one summer Saturday in 2002 from about 11AM until 1 or 2 in the morning. These were the single DVD versions, only the TMP Director’s Edition was available at that time. My friends watched intermittently for the duration. I hope to arrange another Blu Ray marathon a weekend or so prior to the next Trek movie in 2012.

There have occasionally been movies based on TV series, but they were usually extended versions of the shows – the Adam West “Batman” movie, for instance.

STTMP, however, was probably the first “big-budget” movie based on a TV show.

Dark Shadows– 1970. Movie made from popular gothic soap. (I believe they’re remaking it now with Johnny Depp?)

Trek ff dont forget the uhuru fan dance heheh–also shats directing isnt too bad–more than a bit of a homage to leans lawrence of arabia–oh yeh n kirk shouting i need my pain—spocks antigrav rocket boots–sybok–etc..

TMP on now. DEFINETELY better engine room than 09.

The Morning

Ukraine’s new hope.

How an aid package from the U.S. could affect the war.

A soldier holding a grenade launcher runs through smoke in a forest.

By German Lopez

You have probably read that the war in Ukraine is a stalemate. But conditions have changed in recent months — in Russia’s favor. It has captured more territory, and it seems likely to launch a larger offensive later this spring or summer. In the meantime, Ukraine’s ability to fight back has deteriorated since the U.S. largely stopped sending aid in December.

The $60 billion in Ukraine aid that the House passed over the weekend has the potential to change the situation yet again. The Senate is likely to pass the bill in the coming days, and President Biden has signaled that he will sign it.

In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain how the aid package could affect the war.

Ukraine’s needs

American funds will help Ukraine restock two things that have played pivotal roles in the war: artillery shells and antiaircraft munitions.

The war has often revolved around artillery, which are large guns that armies use to fire explosive shells and hit targets from a great distance. Both sides have used artillery to kill troops and destroy tanks and bunkers from miles away, weakening the enemy before an attack. Artillery has also stopped advancing armies.

In recent months, though, Ukraine has started to run out of artillery shells. Russian forces have fired five to 10 times as many shells as Ukraine. “That’s just not sustainable,” my colleague Eric Schmitt, who covers national security, told me. “Ukraine would eventually have to give up territory and pull back.”

Ukraine has also relied on antiaircraft weapons, such as U.S.-made Patriot missiles, that can shoot down planes and missiles. The threat of these weapons has kept Russia from unleashing the full might of its air force, because it fears that Ukraine would destroy its expensive planes. Russia has instead resorted to long-range missiles, and Ukraine has shot down many of them.

But Ukraine had started to run out of those munitions, too. Last week, President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Ukraine’s short supplies for its inability to stop a Russian missile barrage that killed at least 17 people north of Kyiv. “This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment,” Zelensky said.

The new artillery and anti-air munitions will start to arrive in Ukraine just days after the bill becomes law. The $60 billion will pay for several months’ worth of weapons.

Some of the aid will also go for training. That support will help address another Ukrainian shortage — in personnel — by allowing the military to prepare newer recruits for the front lines more quickly. It will also help teach Ukraine’s forces how to use some of the advanced weapons they are receiving from Western allies, including Abrams tanks and F-16 jets.

What comes next

Once the aid starts arriving, Ukraine is likely to put it to work on the eastern front, where Russia has recently taken the city of Avdiivka. It could halt Russia’s recent progress and prevent much larger advances. Some analysts have worried that an undersupplied Ukraine would struggle to defend the countryside around Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, after Kyiv, and its remaining territory along the Black Sea coastline.

“With more aid, Ukraine will probably be able to solidify its defenses and keep its most important cities,” said my colleague Julian Barnes, who covers intelligence and national security.

If all goes well, Ukraine could launch an offensive campaign in 2025, perhaps to retake territory in the country’s east and southeast. One important goal: to drive a wedge between Russia’s holdings in the eastern region of the Donbas and the southern peninsula of Crimea.

Ukraine’s official goal is to retake all of the Donbas and Crimea. Many experts are skeptical that Ukraine can do that, especially after last year’s disappointing counteroffensive. And some critics of the aid package argue that it won’t even allow Ukraine to stop Russia’s advance. Senator J.D. Vance, an Ohio Republican, says that U.S. manufacturing can’t currently keep pace with Russian weapons production. The war simply matters more to Russia than the West, and Russia is dedicating more resources to it, these critics have argued.

Still, most experts believe the additional aid will make a meaningful difference. They worry that an easier Russian victory could encourage it to invade other countries, or encourage China to invade Taiwan, by undermining confidence in the U.S. and its allies.

The most realistic scenario for Ukraine is probably not a return to the prewar borders. The nation would be smaller, but it could retain most of its territory, then integrate itself economically and strategically with Europe. That’s a lot better than outright defeat.
