Our second (and final) trip on Statesmen trains

Just returned from the West Highland Line 3 day trip, having previously experienced the Settle-Carlisle route. We were in the First Class non-dining area, and had lots of room to stretch out as the service was quite quiet. The staff were marvellous; they can’t do enough for you. Tea and Coffee flows pretty constantly, and you receive snack boxes each day (although fewer this time than the Settle-Carlisle route). You can also order sausage or bacon baps from the buffet for delivery to your seat. The scenery is spectacular, and although you miss quite a bit of it on the trip up due to it getting dark early this time of year, you get it to see it on the way back. The long distance does make for long days, as there is a fair bit of waiting in sidings as faster trains pass, and you have to expect early morning departures and late night arrivals. This will have been our final train trip (as no other trips appeal), but we have thoroughly enjoyed both.

There are very few reviews on here for travelling in the First class non-dining, so I hope people find this helpful. This weekend we enjoyed a 3 day trip to the Scottish Highlands and it was absolutely brilliant. We were the first pick up/departure and the train was slightly delayed due to trespassers on the railway line, however there were Statesman staff on the platform who greeted us and kept us fully informed. From the moment we stepped on the train until the moment we left; the staff were all extremely friendly, attentive and looked after us brilliantly. I must mention Zach and Yan who were the main stewards in our coach/carriage and worked tirelessly throughout our trip, and also Molly, Katy and Jan ~ what a credit they all are to the Locomotive Services Group who own the Statesman train. The train was immaculately clean the entire journey, as were the toilets. On our second day they even cleaned all the windows on the outside before we set off for our trip to Mallaig. When I booked the trip the Pullman dining option was sold out, and as I only travel First Class or Upper Class I must admit I was disappointed. However I loved being in the First Class non-dining coach - I did have a nose in the Pullman Dining carriage - and I can honestly say that I actually preferred and felt happier in the more informal First Class, which has no dress code unlike the Pullman Dining which states ‘you can never be too overdressed on board’ We were served tea and coffee throughout the entire journey. Coming home I was offered tea 12 times and coffee 10 times, so you certainly don’t go thirsty. We were also given a snack box each day (see photo for its contents) and biscuits, plus you can also purchase food/drink from the buffet menu and also take your own picnic hampers on board. It truly was a fantastic trip, from passing a snow dusted Ben Nevis to crossing the viaduct featured in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies. The Highland’s are absolutely beautiful, it’s a beauty that’s difficult to describe. My only little niggle was the very poor attitude of a gentleman I spoke to in the customer service office that’s based in Cornwall. His unprofessional manner and unfriendliness in his replies to my emails and on the telephone was astonishing. I had already booked the trip when I contacted him and he actually made me fearful that the rest of the staff would be the same - thankfully I had nothing to worry about as ALL the staff on the train were a pure delight. The trip was a wonderful experience that I would highly recommend and I hope to he back on board very soon. I love their informative and interesting Facebook page too - Locomotive Services Group

statesman trips

Another fantastic trip on Statesman Pullman. A 3 day trip to the Highlands and looked after brilliantly by our Stewards Sam and Cristian with ‘Jakanory’ Jan ably assisting. The recent 1 star reviews are all COVID related and not a fair reflection of the usual impeccable standards of Statesman. We love the Pullman service and look forward to our next trip. 4 x repeat customers, always impressed.

West Highlands Railway- absolutely stunning views all the way. Food and service tip top. Staff all professional friendly and helpful. Warmly recommend

statesman trips

Just back from another fabulous long weekend trip to the West Highlands. Our second trip on the Statesman and thought it couldn't be any better than the first but I was wrong - it was even better. The train, food, staff and even the weather was just superb. You really are treated like old friends when boarding, friendly, smiling faces and always someone there to help with bags etc. Thank you to Sandra and Molly and the rest of the crew but particularly to Declan, Ben and Paul who did such a brilliant job of looking after us and the Nick the chef and his team for producing such fantastic food. Oh yes, and how can I forget Janet - the life and soul of the train! Thank you all and see you very soon I hope! Jane and John

We returned home on Monday evening after a three day trip to Fort William, boarding the train in York. From start to finish it was the most wonderful trip, with the added benefit of perfect weather - blue skies and snow capped mountains and views through leafless trees. The food and service on board was outstanding, beating even some quite upmarket cruises. The menus were varied and fresh, and they accomodated my request for no garlic and mustard very well. All the Covid measures on board made the (mostly older) passengers feel very safe. We did rather feel for the crew still wearing masks, but I can see it is a good policy at the moment for reassurance to the more apprehensive. The organisation and attention to detail was excellent and the crew in our coach (Snaefell) were really lovely, able to have the time to chat in between serving delicious food and drinks. We had good company in our coach companions, with plenty to chat about en route. It all made for a very relaxed three days and for a special birthday treat for my husband he was very pleased indeed, the highlight being to see Ben Nevis without it being shrouded in cloud. A first in nearly 75 years!

STATESMAN RAIL (Cornwall) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

What we know: Donald Trump attends Barron Trump graduate high school in West Palm Beach

Since moving to palm beach after his father left the white house, barron has attended oxbridge academy, a school for grades 6-12 in west palm beach where annual tuition is a reported $41,500..

The most anticipated high school graduation since the end of the pandemic took place at Oxbridge Academy Friday morning.

Among the 116 seniors who received their diplomas in the exclusive, private prep school's graduating Class of 2024 was 18-year-old Barron Trump , the son of Donald and Melania Trump. The former first couple attended the ceremony.

On Tuesday, Oxbridge officials reminded the media and the public that the ceremony at the 54-acre campus was private and by invitation only. The school acknowledged "the heightened interest in this year’s event," presumably because of the participation of the Trumps' only child together, and the erstwhile uncertainty over the attendance of the former president and presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee.

Oxbridge Academy graduation: Prep school asks media, onlookers to stay away from ceremony for Barron Trump, other seniors

Here is what we know:

What do we know about the teenager?

About Barron Trump? Not a lot. The youth turned 18 on March 20, and as a minor throughout his father's public life in television, business and politics, he has been kept out of the spotlight and the media headlines.

At 6'7", he is the tallest of the Trump siblings, and rises above his father, who is 6'4". He has been living at Mar-a-Lago with his parents.

Since moving to Palm Beach after his father left the White House, Barron has attended Oxbridge Academy, a college-preparatory school for grades 6-12 in West Palm Beach where annual tuition is a reported $41,500.

What has Donald Trump said about Barron?

Donald Trump has occasionally spoken about his son, mentioning in a pre-Super Bowl interview more than four years ago that Barron liked soccer. He also noted his youngest son is a computer whiz of sorts.

Trump said last week that Barron is “very popular” in school. In a separate interview, he said Barron occasionally offers him political advice.

During a radio interview with the Kayal and Company show on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT in Philadelphia, Donald Trump said Barron advises him from time to time.

“It’s sort of funny. He’ll tell me sometimes, ‘Dad, this is what you have to do,’” Trump said on the show this month.

Where will Barron go to college?

That's another shrouded topic.

Donald Trump in the past has said he believed Barron would follow in his footsteps by attending the University of Pennsylvania. There has also been speculation that the young man might choose New York University in Manhattan, where he spent much of his childhood — and lived until his father was sworn in as the 45th president in early 2017.

But according to what Trump has told Newsweek, it looks like Barron is mulling other options now.

“Right now, he’s doing a great job,” Trump told the weekly news magazine. “He has great marks. He’s going to be going to college soon. And we’re looking at some colleges that are different than they were two months ago.”

Politics 2024: Barron Trump "declined" delegate invite to GOP convention, Melania Trump said in statement

Is Barron Trump into politics?

For three days last week, the answer appeared to be yes.

On May 8, NBC News reported that Barron Trump had been selected as a member of the Florida delegation to this summer's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. As a delegate, he would join his half brothers Donald Jr. and Eric, and half sister Tiffany in casting votes to officially nominate their father as the GOP's presidential nominee for a third straight time.

But then, on the evening of May 10, Melania Trump issued a statement that saying that while Barron was honored to have been chosen, he was declining the opportunity due to prior commitments. She did not elaborate as to what those commitments might be.

If he follows a century of first family history, Barron Trump will not be a political player. Other children of presidents, such as Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton , who spent part of their childhood living in the White House have not pursued political careers.

The exception was the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, Caroline, who served as U.S. ambassador to Australia and Japan.

George W. Bush, the 43rd president, followed his father's footsteps to the White House, but he did not grow up in the presidential mansion. Ditto for his brother, Jeb, who served two terms as governor of Florida and unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2016.

Will Donald Trump attend his son's graduation?

Yes, he was there.

Last month, Donald Trump fumed "that I can't go to my son's graduation" because of his ongoing New York business fraud trial. However, the judge presiding over the case dealing with the bookkeeping of an alleged hush money payment to a porn star subsequently canceled court on today, allowing Trump to attend the graduation.

Later today, the former president will jet off to Minnesota to speak at a GOP event there this evening.

Gas prices drop in Texas ahead of record-setting Memorial Day weekend travel, AAA says

statesman trips

AAA has some good news for traveling Texans ahead of a busy Memorial Day weekend .

The association reported gas prices are down across the state, giving drivers a window of opportunity to fill up relatively cheaply before embarking on any trips they may be taking over the holiday weekend. Roughly 3.6 million Texans are expected to travel for Memorial Day, and a record-setting 3.1 million of them are expected to drive, according to AAA.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline across Texas as of Friday is $3.17 , 10 cents less than the price at this time in April, according to AAA . That price is also about 43 cents less than the national average. Gas prices in Texas have remained well below the national average for more than a year.

Demand for gas increased slightly from last week, but there was a "minimal" decrease in supply, according to the Energy Information Administration.

"Fuel prices are in a downward trend, at least for now, heading into of one of the busiest holiday travel periods of the year,” AAA Texas Spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said, according to the release. “Gas prices may fluctuate through the end of May with record travel anticipated for Memorial Day in Texas.”

No plans for Memorial Day? Here are 5 things to do around Austin over the holiday weekend

What are gas prices in Austin?

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Austin is $3.26 , 9 cents higher than the state average but 6 cents lower than the average price in Austin a month ago. Compared to last week, gas costs roughly one cent more in the city.

Of all the cities in Texas surveyed by AAA, El Paso recorded the highest price per gallon of regular unleaded gas at $3.43 as of Thursday. San Angelo had the cheapest gas at $2.95 per gallon.

Letter of the week: Why we must make Putin pay

statesman trips

Wolfgang Münchau’s arguments against seizing Russian assets to pay for weapons for Ukraine (Lateral View, 3 May) seem incoherent to me. They amount to this: we shouldn’t do it because there might be an undefined financial cost to us in the future. The weakest argument is that it might set a precedent for Poland claiming war reparations from Germany, or South Korea from Japan. Aside from the point that such claims may well be legitimate, the idea that our own wrongs should stop us from punishing others makes us hostage to our worst selves. With sanctions having a limited impact on Russia, the defence of Europe is being paid for in Ukrainian blood, with the occasional top-up of weapons and money from us. Why not Putin’s money? Abby Semple, London N19

Fallen giants

It was interesting that Rachel Cunliffe’s persuasive article about the rotting carcass that is the present-day Tory party (Cover Story, 10 May) didn’t reference any of party’s departed “giants”. A recurrent theme of many conversations I have with friends about the state of political life turns on surprise at the rehabilitation – in our eyes – of Messrs Major, Heseltine, Clarke, as well as casualties of the Brexit hostilities such as Dominic Grieve, David Gauke and Rory Stewart. These were serious politicians whose welcome interventions remind us of a time when one’s opponents were decent people with different opinions. Les Bright, Exeter, Devon

One Nation Street

Those who think the Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen has a role in shaping the Tory future (Diary, 10 May) should look at the West Midlands mayoral election, lost by Andy Street. Street was the model of the old centre-ground Tory. The Tories should heed his words after defeat: “The message is clear. Winning from that centre ground is what happens.” Will the right wing of his party believe that?

Damian Green, chair of the One Nation group of Tory MPs, clearly does. He has urged Street to stay in politics, perhaps through a parliamentary seat, as a potential leader. Whether Street heeds that advice will play a major role in whether the Conservative Party has a future. Trevor Fisher, Stafford

Nationalist brigades

Wolfgang Münchau’s statement that the separatist movements in Spain “are stronger than ever” (Lateral View, 10 May) invites comment in light of the advance of Carlos Puigdemont’s party, Together for Catalonia, in May’s elections in Catalonia. Rather than independence, the party’s campaign focused on Puigdemont himself and stressed his ability to defend the interests of Catalonia within Spain.

Münchau rightly points to the rise of the Bildu, the Basque abertzale (left nationalist) party, in the recent Basque elections. Bildu’s strategy to increase its support has been to downplay independence and to focus on socio-economic issues. This does not, however, mean that pro-independence demands will go away. Since 2018 the Socialist government has pursued policies to reduce tensions, partly due to its reliance on the support of Basque and Catalan parties. It is doubtful whether this situation could continue if the Socialist government were replaced by the right-wing Popular Party, especially if it was dependent on the support of the hard-right Vox. Charlie Nurse, Barcelona

On portrayals of trauma

I deeply appreciated Megan Nolan’s devastating and honest piece about Baby Reindeer (Cultural Capital, 26 April). I was disappointed by the programme, which, though it explores writer and actor Richard Gadd’s trauma, does not extend this understanding to others. Its portrayal of Gadd’s stalker feels like an extreme caricature. He gave her character traits that are often invoked to provoke disgust: violence, transphobia, being an overweight woman, and living in a council flat. In a show that seeks to reveal the complexity of trauma, I was surprised that it did little to explore this for the character that most likely had a prolonged history of it. Gadd has vilified and humiliated someone with deeply complex issues in order to have his own story heard. The chasm between public discourse regarding mental health and empathy for those with complex mental health difficulties is stark. Indeed, why has there been such a galvanised attempt to identify and ridicule the real Martha, while less attention has been paid to the identity of Gadd’s rapist? Anna Bowers, London E3

Hit for six

Peter Williams’s review of the new Wisden (Books, 10 May) was an exemplary piece of journalism, distilling large amounts of complex information into succinct, elegant prose and striking imagery; witness “a sort of firework-spangled dungheap vandalising [the] summer” and “the definitive sound of middle-aged men in a shed”. Superb. He even managed to raise a tattered flag of hope in my heart about the game itself – an astonishing achievement, I can assure you. Ric Cheyney, Talsarnau, Gwynedd, Wales

Unburied treasure

I was pleased that you chose to review Alice Rohrwacher’s wonderful La Chimera (Critics, 10 May). It should, however, be noted that the character Italia is a Brazilian member of the Italian diaspora (the name Italia tends to belong to those of Italian heritage born outside Italy – Francis Ford Coppola’s mother was a New York-born Italia). So while Pippa Bailey is right that Italy is “her country”, it is at a certain remove, which I think reinforces the character’s horror at the wilful destruction of Italy’s patrimony.

I am often dismayed by the nonchalance Italy appears to have about its treasures: I was one of the last to see Pompeii’s House of the Gladiators, having visited the site the day before it collapsed in 2010. Christopher Rossi, Enfield, Greater London

Heavenly delights

I thought Colin Richards’ proposed dating of the panels of the Bosch triptych (Correspondence, 3 May) was apposite and amusing. He unwittingly provided the answer to his own request for fellow readers to place the left-hand panel, the Garden of Eden. The year is immaterial, as Wilde would say. In terms of location, it’s as near as dammit to Colin’s address at Spark Bridge. Perhaps just a smidgeon to the north towards Coniston. James Argles, London N4

Texas regulators approve rate hike requested by Oncor

The increase, oncor’s third in eight months, is expected to raise an average customer’s bill by $1 a month.

By Philip Jankowski

2:48 PM on May 16, 2024 CDT — Updated at 7:05 PM on May 16, 2024 CDT

AUSTIN — North Texas residents could see an increase to their electricity bills after state power grid regulators approved a rate hike Thursday for the company that owns power lines in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Oncor’s requested rate hike is expected to add $1 a month to the average residential customer’s bill, according to a company estimate.

It was the third increase the power line company has sought in the past eight months after a new law allowed companies to increase the pace of rate hike requests. Since the law went into effect, those rate increases add up to about $3.40 a month for the average residential customer.

The Public Utility Commission approved the latest increase without comment.

Oncor is a state-permitted monopoly that owns power lines across a vast swath of Texas , including the Dallas area and Midland-Odessa. State law allows Oncor a guaranteed rate of return and reimbursement for PUC-approved investments in the state’s power line infrastructure.

The rate hike amounts to only about one-tenth of a cent per kilowatt-hour.

These rates do not appear on electric bills as line items, though companies like Oncor charge customers a $4.23 monthly fee. Instead, they are charged to retail electricity providers and are presumed to be baked into the total rate customers pay for using electricity. Oncor estimates its total rate cost for the average residential customer is about $50 a month.

Oncor is seeking to raise more than $81 million from the higher rate for new power line infrastructure.

“With historic growth across our service area, our team remains focused on making important, strategic investments in our electric infrastructure and system to help continue safely and reliably serving new and existing customers,” Oncor spokeswoman Cynthia Cano Valdespino said in an emailed statement.

The pace of these rate hikes has doubled since the Texas Legislature passed a law last year that permits power line companies to seek two rate changes per year, as opposed to one. Senate Bill 1015 , authored by Sen. Phil King, R-Weatherford, also reduced the scrutinization process for rate cases.

Oncor’s distribution rates have risen 13.7% since the law took effect last year. And the rates have increased by 36% since 2017.

“Even with this change, Oncor rates continue to be among the lowest electric delivery rates of any investor-owned utility in Texas,” Cano Valdespino said.

King did not return messages to his office seeking comment.

The first-term senator sent a letter to the utility commission last month saying the point of the legislation was to mimic how similar rate hikes are handled for another component of power line companies’ revenue streams.

“The entire point of SB 1015 was to streamline an inefficient, litigious process” for rate increases, King wrote.

The new law put a 60-day deadline on power distribution companies’ requests for rate increases. And since its implementation, some aspects of the quasi-judicial process have been eliminated.

'I don't think that's wise': Video captures herd of bison charging tourists in Yellowstone

statesman trips

If you needed a reminder as to why you should avoid approaching giant wild animals while enjoying the great outdoors, a recent video out of Yellowstone National Park may jog your memory.

A video taken by Adella Gonzalez on Wednesday captured the moment tourists at Yellowstone learned this lesson the hard way when they found out just how fast wild bison can run.

Gonzalez told newswire service Storyful that she was on vacation at the park with her family when she noticed a group of bison ambling near a walkway. Keeping a safe distance, Gonzalez used her phone camera to zoom in and capture the herd, which she said was being approached by some brave tourists.

“We noticed tourists getting very close to the bison," she told Storyful.

A group of roughly eight bison can be seen shambling across a pathway in the video, walking past a man who appears to be sitting very still on a bench.

As the bison continue to take their leisurely walk across the path and back into the grass, another group of people can be seen deciding to get closer and cross mere feet in front of the herd.

“I don’t think that’s wise,” a woman can be heard saying before the bison begin to seemingly feel a bit claustrophobic, moving to charge at the group.

"The pack of bison began to get agitated and started running,” Gonzalez told Storyful.

Most popular national parks: What is the most visited national park in the US? Answers to your biggest park questions

Sure enough, the bison in the video pick up the pace and begin charging at the tourists, who quickly notice and begin to flee. The bison can be seen giving chase as the group hightails it out of their way.

“Oh my heavens…Oh no! Don’t run! Holy cats! Oh my god! They’ve got the zoomie zooms!” a woman in the background says as she watches the pursuit.

Luckily for the visitors, they were able to get out of the way in time, allowing the bison to continue running their intended path unfettered.

"I hope they're OK," says the voice behind the camera.

Luckily everyone was OK, according to Gonzalez, who reported no injuries as a result of the encounter.

Do not approach the animals, says National Park Service

Like any other wildlife living in the parks, the National Park Service advises tourists never to approach bison and to watch the protected animals from a distance.

According to the organization, bison are the largest land mammals in North America, with males weighing up to 2,000 pounds and females about 1,000 pounds. They are also agile and can run up to 35 miles per hour - "faster than you," points out NPS.

"Seemingly docile, mammals such as bison and elk account for most of the wildlife-human encounters. Visitors and wildlife can get injured - sometimes these encounters are deadly," advises NPS. "Protect these wild animals and avoid hazardous encounters by keeping your distance. For their safety and yours, stay at least 25 yards from all wildlife."

To drive the point home, the NPS webpage dedicated to Yellowstone features several videos of bison encounters gone wrong - one such clip shows a "bison goring at West Thumb" in which a group of tourists surrounding a bison gets a scare when the animal uses its powerful horns and head to launch a man feet into the air amid a chorus of screams.

"While bison may seem as harmless and slow, they can be very dangerous and fast. This video shows what can happen when you approach too closely," says the caption.
