There are some heavy and dangerous snakes like King Cobra, Russel viper, Krait and numerous more that can be found in this unique snake park. There are some small animals as well as non-poisonous snakes which can be viewed. There is a railway station just in the city whereas the airport is 100 kms away .

15. Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary

This bird sanctuary is a treat for all the bird lovers as well as adventure lovers as there are some deep rocks, gardens and forest. The atmosphere provides birds a perfect place to breed and stay protected from the shackles of hunters.

Tourist can enjoy a nice trekking route while searching some exotic birds in the North region of Kerala. The railway and airport are 50 km away and cab or car is preferred to visit the place.

Northern Kerala lies in between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. It is quite an underrated tourist destination in Kerala as most tourists tend to flock to South Kerala. Northern Kerala is just as beautiful as the south, only less populated by tourists as it not a tourism oriented destination. If you are looking to travel off the beaten path, then you should definitely consider Northern Kerala.

In this article let’s check out some of the top destinations to visit in Northern Kerala .

Wayanad is easily one of the most beautiful places in Kerala . The sprawling plantations of coffee and spices, the deciduous forests and the many spotless hill stationsmake it an exciting holiday destination in northern Kerala. Chembra Peak, Meenmutty waterfalls, Pakshipathalam, Banasura Sagar Dam etc. are some of the main attractions in Wayanad. One can also shop for Wayanad specialties such as bamboo products, herbal plants, spices and coffee to take back home.

Wayanad district is well connected by road. Guided jeep tours can be arranged to any part of the district with great accommodation scattered throughout. The nearest airport and railway station is Kozhikode.

Formerly known as Calicut, Kozhikode is an important part of the history of South India as it used to be a very important port town. The main market, Valiyangadi, has a history of 600 years. Kozhikode is an important tourist hub of Northern Kerala as the tourists can disperse off to more secluded places from here. The Beypore ship building yard, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary , Sweat Meat Street, Kozhikode beach, Kappad beach etc. are some of the main attractions here. Bekal has Kerala’s largest and best-preserved Portuguese fort from the 17th-century, as well as a beach. Valiyaparamba Backwaters are a northern alternative to the Alleppey backwaters.  Chandragiri Fort, Kareem Park, Kanwatheertha beach, Ranipuram, Mallikarjuna Temple, Ananthapura Lake Temple, Pallikkare beach, Nithyanandashrama, Anandashramam etc. are some other attractions in the Kasaragod region.

Kannur formerly known as Cannanore is a serene little town in Northern Kerala. Blessed with abundant natural beauty, Kannur makes for a nice and relaxing holiday. St. Angelo’s fort, Arakkal Museum, Dharmadam Island, Sri Muthapan Temple etc. are some of the main attractions in Kannur .

Kannur also has the famous Muzhappilangad drive-in-Beach . This is a very clean beach and one can drive on the beach for up to 4Kms.  Kannur has delicious Kerala-Malabar cuisine. Thoughts of Kerala often evoke images of dome-shaped houseboats traversing the backwaters. And neatly manicured tea estates covered in mist on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The lush green beauty of God’s Own Country has stolen many a heart. The result of which was 10 million tourist arrivals in 2011. A large majority of who flocked to the familiar tourist trail in the south of the state, along the backwaters of Alleppey and Kumarakom and the hill station of Munnar. The statistic became my cue to discover places to visit in North Kerala, of which Google could tell me little.

Away from the honeymooners and ‘first timers’, this is a Kerala of virgin backwaters. Where the only boats you ever see are fishing boats, owned by residents of the sleepy villages quietly nestled on its palm-fringed shores. This is a Kerala of blissfully isolated white sand beaches, with no beachside shacks and no sunbathers. This is a Kerala of mist-adorned tropical forests, where wild elephants can be effortlessly spotted as you drive along the main highway.

Behold, offbeat and pristine places to visit in North Kerala, that are still under the regular tourist radar. As always, I try to highlight travel experiences that are environmentally conscious and benefit locals:

Thottada Village, Kannur : Places to visit in North Kerala for beach bums

On the confluence of the backwaters and the Arabian Sea, across a pretty beach, lies the sleepy hamlet of Thottada. On one side, a narrow stretch of backwaters meanders in the shade of tall coconut trees. On the other, the waves of the Arabian Sea caress the golden sands of Thottada beach. One minute, you could be spotting otters, darters, terns and kingfishers along a backwater lagoon. The other you could be strolling barefoot and playing in the waves. Such is the pace of life in this tiny corner of Kannur, reached through a narrow python road from the main town.

The monsoon rains awaken Thottada from its slumber, whipping the backwaters and the sea in full flow. Afterwards, the village transforms with soulful festivities. The Theyyam dance festival has acquired a cult status in the region with traditions dating back a thousand years. A colourful melange of ethnic costumes, face paintings, antique weapons, gaudy masks, folk music, ancient rituals and theatrical art, best experienced in traditional village homes.

Wayanad : for mountain lovers

In the backdrop of the majestic Western Ghats, colourful deciduous and semi-evergreen forests are interspersed with plantations of coffee, rubber, banana, coconut and jackfruit, and sprinkled with rice paddies and lush tea estates. It is here that clouds descend into the wilderness. Herds of wild elephants freely roam. Traditional tribal folk live along the edges of the jungle in houses made of bamboo and cow dung. A big cat (the tiger) may not elude you on a trek through the core zone of the forest. Tiny fresh water islands are strewn along the length of the district for an anytime dip.

This, one of the few private islands on the backwaters, is nature’s most indulgent way of discovering life on the coconut countryside of Kerala. Sleepy villages hide away amid palm trees on the shores. Occasional fishing boats emerge from the mist, and eagles soar in the skies above. This isn’t your houseboat-infiltrated lagoon. Not many people speak languages other than Malayalam here. You won’t find yourself bargaining for a fresh catch of prawn here. This is the serendipity of those willing to get off the tourist trail.

Nice to see someone write about the less touristy shores of northern Kerala. I went to Telicherry (which has some lovely homestays) and Kannur several years ago. Ironically, I never managed to go to the backwaters!

Travelled to Wayanad a year and 6 months back. The whole district is very serene and picturesque. Stayed in Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery and Vythiri. The tales of Pazhassi Raja are a must-learn over there – he’s a local legend. His tomb (a memorial park) is also there in Wayanad, near Manthanawady. Kabini river is pretty much the heart of the ghats of Wayanad. There’s a dam near Kalpetta, the river below which is very full if one goes there after the rainy season. The tea plantations on the route between Kalpetta and Meenmutty Falls are brilliant. The owners of the one we stopped to explore were very cooperative too!

Hi Shivya, Please don’t miss out the great opportunity to visit Palakkad District in Kerala as this District is blessed with all kind of attractions except beach. Rock Garden, Ropeway, Malampuzha Garden, Hanging Bridge, Kava, Palakkad Fort, Jain temple, Thiruvalathur Temple, Chinmaya Mission Temple, Kalpathy Heritage Village, Nelliyampathy Hills, Kanjirapuzha, Silent Valley National Park, Parambikulam Wild Life, Siruvani Forest, Dhoni Forest, Meenvallam Waterfalls are few of the best attractions in Palakkad, which are much more better than other tourist attractions in Kerala. The only sad thing is Palakkad doesn’t have beach.

Just try to visit there and enjoy tour travel a good , loving and memorable trip. Please don’t listen what others says to avoid Palakkad trip as there is a big lobby group plays in Kerala to discriminate Palakkad. You have to visit the destination to know more about the same. Then only you will get a clear picture about it.

I’m from Kerala and happy to see Wayanad on the list. I believe it is the best place in the whole of Kerala to visit. Speaking of Kerala’s best kept secrets, Nelliyampathy in Palakkad district and Gavi in Pathanamthitta district could be ideal candidates.

Mean time, Palakkad is also a beautiful spot like Palakkad Fort (Heritage), Temples (Kalpathy Heritage, Jain Temple, Thiruvalathur Temple, Chinmaya Mission Temple etc), Wild Life (Parambikulam Wild Life), Silent Valley (National Park), Siruvani (Forest), Dhoni (Forest), Meenvallam (Waterfalls), Nelliyampathy (Hill Station) etc

People think Kerala means only Munnar, Thekkady, Kovalam and Wayanad. But other spots in Kerala are much more better than this. This is not my word, but this word is from tourist, whose who visited Palakkad. I know Gavi is also a very good spot. But I didn’t visit there. Awaiting a god chance to visit there

hey wait. Isnt thottada closer to thalassery? I just went to this beautiful secluded beach near thalassery, watched dolphins from the sea side and fisherman scouting for early morning catch of kallumakkayi (muscle). Or are you talking of a different beach all together?

Bakel fort in Kasarkod, and Kannur’s Payyambalam Beach, Aralam Wild Life sancutary, Muzhappilangad drive-in Beach, Dharmadam Thuruth are some of the best places to visit in north Kerala. Let’s talk about visiting some offbeat North Kerala places today. Of all the places that we have covered in South India, Kerala is definitely one of our favourites. And that is the reason we keep returning back here. We have already covered some of the best places to visit in Kerala previously on our blog. While most of the people flock to  see beautiful places in Munnar , spend a day in the backwaters of Alleppey and visit the wildlife in Thekkady on their first trip exploring Kerala. And so did we. But ,after few years we started to look beyond these touristy spots for further places to explore in Kerala.

So, few years later we went on a relaxing holiday to Kumarakom by the banks of Vembadan lake . And finally, now we want to cover some offbeat places in North Kerala. As these are unexplored and still pristine to the mass tourist arrivals. In case you are wondering where to head next on your travel adventures, we suggest pick some of these pristine places.

A brief introduction to North Kerala

Formerly known as Malabar, Northern Kerala covers 5 prominent districts of Kerala. Namely Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram. And these are strategically located between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Also, these places in northern Kerala hold prestigious culture and tradition that can be traced from the reign of Cheras. Actually, The Cheras were the illustrious rulers of ancient Kerala and Tamil Nadu. And on a historic note, the entire Malabar region can be divided into three parts:

• Zamorins of Calicut
• Kolathiris of North Malabar
• Valluvakonathiris of Valluvanad.

Today, Northern Kerala plays a significant role in the tourism map of Kerala. And has two of the international airports in Kerala  . Wh ich makes it easy to access these regions from anywhere in the world. Also, from culture to tradition and cuisine, places in North Kerala are different from the rest of Kerala. So, whether you are planning for a memorable family vacation. Or, an audacious solo trip. There are some captivating places in north Kerala that make it the number one tourist destination in India. So, here goes our list of the top offbeat North Kerala places to explore on your next travel adventure.

The Bekal fort is situated at Bekal. Actually, Bekal is a small town in the north Kerala district of Kasargod. And the Bekal fort is acclaimed as one of the best preserved forts in India. Bekal Fort was built by Keladi Shivappa Nayaka. They were a well known ruler of Keladi Nayaka kingdom. Spreading over 40 acres of land, Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala. And it offers a spectacular view of the Arabian Sea. Also, it was once a main military station of Tipu Sultan. The fort features a keyhole structure. And was built in the year 1650. Then, in the year 1992 the Government of India declared it as a special tourist area. Some of the major attractions at the fort include the following:

• Exquisite peepholes
• An old Anjaneya Temple
• Theyyam sculptures.
• An impressive rock garden erected in the parking area, which adds to the attraction of the site.
• Imposing underground passageways and a grand mosque were built by Tipu Sultan, near to the site.

Visiting Hours

Visiting Hours start from 8:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM.

You may allocate a minimum of 1 hour to watch the beauty of the fort and based on your interest level, you may extend it to 2 hours.

Entry Fees for adults is INR15. Visiting is free for children up to the age of 15 years.

How to reach Bekal Fort?

The nearest domestic airport to reach Bekal Fort is in Mangalore. Which is 50 km away from the site. The nearest international airport that connects the major city close to Bekal fort, Kozhikode with rest of the cities in India is Calicut International Airport. Also known as Karipur Airport. 180 kilometres is the distance between Kozhikode (Calicut) and Bekal Fort. And you can always score cheap flights to these airports from nearby metropolitans like Chennai and Bangalore which are well connected with rest of the world!

Travelling to Bekal Fort by Train

There are two nearby railway stations where tourists can get off to reach Bekal Fort. They are Kasargod Railway station and Kanhangad Railway station. And both these stations are 12 kilometres away from the tourist site.

Travelling to Bekal Fort by Road

Bekal is connected through local roads and the nearest bus station, Kasargod bus station is approximately 12 kilometres away.

Best time to visit Bekal Fort

The summer season in Kerala is from February to May. It is one of the unfavourable seasons to visit Bekal Fort owing to the humid temperature. That ranges from 28 degrees Celsius to 36 degrees Celsius.

Bekal Fort in Monsoon

From June to September falls the monsoon season. The abundant rainfall makes the fort more greenish. Thus tourists who love to see the beauty of the fort amidst the lush green scenery. Hence for them monsoon is the favourable season.

Bekal Fort in Winter

The best season to visit Bekal Fort is from October to February. Which is the winter season in Kerala. As temperature varies between 20 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius during the winter season.  Thus it is neither too warm nor too cold.

Edakkal Caves

Edakkal caves are located 1,200 meters above the sea level. They are formed due to two natural rock formations vertically placed on the Ambukuthi Hills. Also, Edakkal caves are strategically located at Edakkal. Which is a small place in Wayanad. Which is the north-east district of Kerala. And hence the name Edakkal Caves. The caves were first discovered in 1890 by the then SP (Superintendent of Police) of Malabar, Fred Fawcett. Edakkal Caves features two chambers and impressive cave paintings that date back to 6000 BC! Thus, these rock engravings form the basic evidence of human inhabitations for historians and archaeologists.

And the humans that had lived here belong to the Neolithic and Mesolithic age. The cave paintings are in the form of pictures of humans, animals, weapons, etc. We can also see Tamil and Brahmi Script inside the caves. Overall, ‘A man holding a jar’ is the most notable painting made by the inhabitants lived at that time. These are definitely one of the most offbeat North Kerala places that you will ever visit. Or, for that matter, they are very unique in entire India!

Visiting Hours start from 08:30 AM and closes at 04:30 PM. You need to budget at least 3 – 4 hours to trek up the Ambukuthi Hills and explore the wilderness of the caves.

How to reach Edakkal Caves?

Calicut International Airport. Which is about 23 kilometres from Kozhikode, is the nearest aerodrome available. If you take the Calicut – Wayanad route, the approximate travelling time to reach Edakkal will be 3 hours.

The nearest railway station is Kozhikode railway station, which is located 87 kilometres from Edakkal caves.

Travelling to Edakkal Caves by Road

NH 766 is the best route to reach Wayanad. And from Wayanad, it will take only 30 minutes to reach the destination. Actually, we happened to visit the Eddakal Caves on our way back to Bangalore from Wayanad. On the way, we stopped to explore the caves before further continuing our journey. The best time to visit Edakkal caves is from November to March. As, this is the time of winter season and the place will be graced by a pleasant climate, which makes tourists to trek in flocks during this season.

Thusharagiri Waterfalls

Located 50 kilometres away from Kozhikode, Thusharagiri waterfalls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Kerala. Here, the Chalippuzha River diverges into three waterfalls, namely Erattumukku, MazhavilChattom, and Thumbithullum Para. The name Thusharagiri is coined using two words Thusharam. Which means Snow and Giri means hills. The meaning of Thusharagiri is “Snow-Capped Hills.” Falling from an altitude of 246 feet, Thusharagiri Waterfalls can be reached after completing a short trek which starts from a hanging bridge. Also, on the way to waterfalls, travellers can see a Bedda Nut tree. It is a large deciduous tree, locally known as Thanni Muthassi. According to locals, Bedda Nut tree is believed to be 400 years old. The peculiarity of Thanni Muthassi is that it is hollow inside. And at least three persons can stand inside the tree. Also, that is what makes these waterfalls a truly offbeat destination to explore.

If you are planning to travel by train, get off at the nearest railway station to Thusharagiri, that is, Kozhikode railway station. 50 kilometres is the distance between Thusharagiri and Kozhikode railway station.

The nearest town is Kodencherry. From Kodencherry hire a cab or taxi or KSRTC buses to reach Thusharagiri waterfalls.

Summer is generally treated as an off-season for tourism in Kerala. The temperature ranges between 25 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius.

Founded in 1973, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to endangered species of both flora and fauna. It is ranked as the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. Also, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary features both Moist Deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests. And, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an important part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Overall it accommodates 45 species of mammals and reptiles, 203 species of birds, and 59 species of fishes! Actually, India has 14 Biosphere Reserves. Out of which Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is the first biosphere in the list. Spread across Muthanga and Tholpetty, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary conducts ecotourism programmes including jeep safari. So, this makes for the next entry in our list of offbeat North Kerala places to visit.

Erected on the famous Brahmagiri Hills, Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is home to great varieties of bird species and features rolling hills, deep rock caves, and virgin forests. The best time to visit Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is from November to April. Chances of forest fire make it closed from February to May.

Day 01: Arrival at Calicut

You are greeted on arrival at Calicut International Airport/Railway station by The Travel Planners representative and transfer to your Hotel. After relax you can visit Pazhassiraja Museum, Art Gallery, where you can view some of the world famous painting of Kerala’s artist legends like Raja Ravi Varma. Places to see in Calicut

Pazhassiraja Museum

Named after the great freedom fighter, Pazhassiraja Kerala Varma, the Pazhassiraja Museum and Art Gallery exhibits several collections and arts including ancient coins, miniature models of temples, stone carvings, traditional bronze sculptures, mural paintings and artefacts from the megalithic age and the Indus Valley Civilization. The Museum also showcases some of the acclaimed paintings of Kerala's most revered artists, including Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Varma.

When the building was constructed in 1812, it was known as the East Hill Bungalow, but in the year 1980, it was converted into an archaeological museum and was renamed as the Pazhassiraja Archaeological Museum.

Kappad Beach

Day 02: Calicut to Wayanad

In the morning after breakfast drive to Wayanad(110 kms /3 hrs), will take you through the lush green hub of North Kerala. The route to Wayanad itself is thrilling with its exciting hair-pin curves You will be delighted with the mesmerizing sight of hills, caves hiding some secrets of the past, lakes reflecting the surrounding lustrous forests, small streams and miniature water falls caressing the hills and dales. On arrival check into the hotel. Evening you can visit Lakkidi - the Gateway of Wayanad, Pookot lake. The enduring fresh water lake nestled among wooded hills. You may get a wonderful shopping experience at spice garden in the evening.

Lakkidi is often referred to as the gateway to the paradise called Wayanad and is one of the most visited tourist places in north Kerala. Sitting at 700 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in the Wayanad hill station. The area is famous for the bewitching scenic beauty comprising of the lush green hills, gorges and streams that one can see while travelling from Adivaram to Lakkidi through the steep mountains and the serpentine Ghat pass.

Tourists also stop by the famous vantage point, Lakkidi Viewpoint to get a panoramic view of the valley. On the road is a Vythiri is a chained Ficus tree that draws a huge crowd of tourists. Stories have it that the chain holds the soul of a tribal youth who was killed by a British engineer after guiding the engineer through Wayanad�s forests.

Pookot Lake

The Pookot Lake is a natural freshwater lake lying just two kilometres away from Vythiri. Nestled among the wooded slopes and evergreen forests, the Pookot Lake offers breath-taking views and a serene ambience.

The Panamaram rivulet, which is one of the main tributaries of the Kabini River originates from the lake and falls into the Panamaram valley. During their tour to the Pookot Lake, tourists can check out the fresh-water aquarium over there that exhibits an excellent array of freshwater fishes. Apart from the scenic view, one can also enjoy boating in the lake or shop for souvenirs at the Handicrafts and Spices Emporium. The lake is in charge of the South Wayanad Forest Division and is run by the District Tourism promotion council.

Day 03 - Wayanad

Today morning breakfast, today delight in full day sightseeing tour of Wayanadu. Wayanad is probably the best tourist destination to include in the north tour packages of Kerala. You can visit the famous Edakkal caves-There are three caves located at a height of 1000 mts on Ambukuthi mountain. Kuruwa Deep, Kuruwa Island is 955 acres of green forest on the tributaries of the east flowing river Kabani. Tholpetty Wild life sanctuary. You can find here spotted deer, elephants, bison, leopard, tiger... etc. It is a 25 km drive inside the sanctuary wherein you will come across a unique variety of wildlife.

Must visit places in Wayanad

Edakkal caves.

The Edakkal caves are two naturally formed caves located 1200 meters above sea level on Ambukuthi Mala. It takes a 45-minute trek up the Ambukuthi hills to reach the cave. Once you visit the spot, you can see one great boulder wedged between two bigger stones giving it the appearance of a cave. The name 'Edakkal' literally translates into 'a stone in-between'.

There are etchings and line drawings in the cave walls that show that people dwelled here from the prehistoric times. Some of the petroglyphs are as old as 7000 years.

The caves were discovered in 1895 when the Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district, Fred Fawcett was on a hunting trip to Wayanad. There are many myths and legends associated with the Edakkal Caves and the locals consider the caves sacred.

Kuruva Dweep

The Kuruva Dweep is a cluster of islands with densely populated flora and fauna over the Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread over 950 acres of land, the island is a protected river delta. While travelling to this island, you can see rare species of trees, birds, herbal plants, orchids, etc. It takes a few hours to cover the islands by boats and rafts, which are provided by the Kerala Tourism Department. The authorities are strict about maintaining eco-tourism in Kuruva Island, and hence, partying and picnic are prohibited.

Kuruwa Dweep is an uninhabited island that brings its visitors closer to nature and offers a sense of tranquillity. It is truly nature's gift to Wayanad.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary spans over an area of about 344 square kilometres. Established in the year 1973, the sanctuary is dominated by tropical deciduous and patches of semi-evergreen trees as well as tuskers, birds and butterflies. It is also home to various threatened species of fauna including the vultures.

A jeep safari in the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary will help you spot elephants, panthers, tigers, bonnet macaques, bison, sambar deer, bears, Malabar squirrels and the rare Slender Loris all in their natural habitat. Tourists can also see plantations of teak, silver oak, eucalyptus and rosewood trees in the sanctuary.

Day 04 - Wayanad to Kannur

Thalassery is a coastal town of Kerala with a unique blend of history, culture and tradition. Also known as Tellicherry, it was one of the earliest towns to be colonized by the British in the state. Fort St. Angelos

Fort St. Angelos or the Kannur Fort was constructed in 1505 by Don Francesco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy in India. The fort was captured by the Dutch in 1663 and was later sold to the Ali Raja of the Arakkal dynasty. The Britishers then took over the fort in 1790 and turned it into their main army centre in the Malabar region. The primary attractions around the fort include the Mopilla Bay and the Dharamadam Island.

Thalassery Fort

Situated on a rocky cliff on the Thalassery beach, the Thalassery Fort is an ancient monument built by the East India Company to symbolize the power and ability of the imperial rulers. During their colonial rule in India, the fort played a prominent role in supporting the military and commercial activities of the British. Presently, the Archaeological Survey of India supervises the Thalassery Fort.

Payyambalam Beach

The Payyambalam Beach is a well-maintained beach in the Kannur region. It is an ideal location for a family picnic or to just relax in absolute peace. The beach offers surfing and swimming options as well.

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Lying at just about seven kilometres from Thalassery, Muzhappilangad Beach is a popular drive-in beach. You can drive along the 4km stretch of sand while taking in the view of the picturesque Malabar Coast.

1. AlAMIKKALI

Mangalam Kali is a time tested, traditional folk art form blended with music and dance performed in groups of women and men together. It is ritualistic among prominent scheduled tribes of Kasaragod district of Kerala namely Mavilan and Malavettuvan.

Before the social reforms took place in Kerala, These tribes used to perform this musical -dance event in the courtyards of their land lords who provided them work, food and shelter and usually Mangalam Kali was part of a ritualistic event in connection with a marriage in the tribal habitat. The toting tribal used to perform throughout night dancing to the tunes of Thudis, a specialized instrument made of specified wood and leather of wild animals. The performing groups were given food and gifts depending on the landlords. The vocals are usually emphatic on the need to preserve nature and at times philosophical. Mangalam Kali with it's vibrant forms of music and movements will take us to an era of the golden past where tribal were guardians of our flora and fauna and it is very special to Kasaragod and North Malabar.

2. MANGALAM KALI

Alamikkali is a customary art form. The play was widely accepted as a secular way of entertainment where Hindus have an Exclusive night to perform in Muslim customary nitualsAlamis were soldiers of the Mysore King Tipu Sultan who Invaded these parts of Malabar coast during the British Raj. It has a link to the Muharram celebration as well which was related to the war of Karbala. Haxzrath Imam Hussain who faught against the misrule of the dictator yazeedi has faced several atrocities. Yazeedi’s soldiers coloured their body in fearful black to scare the children of Hussain . Hussain’s soldiers were even denied drinking water by putting fire on the pathways to wells. Imam Hussain was brutally killed and even his body could not be allowed to bury property. Alamikkali Players are all Hindus under the Muslim Priesthood.

Alamis with Barefoot visit households as beggars and during their visit they chant traditional songs to suit the situations. They worship a part of hand of Hazrath Imam Hussain which could not be buned when he was brutally killed by Yazeedi. The Body of Alamis are dark coloured with white spots to scare onlookers but their songs pacify also. The Alamikkali was originated from the now famous Alamipalli in Kanhangad where several families of Urdu speaking Hanafi sect of Muslims were concentrated and spread to other parts of the district and to Mangalore.

Suranga (Thurankam/ Surangam) is a unique water management system prevalent in the Kasaragod district of North Malabar and some part of Karnataka. Similar structures known as ‘Qanats’ can be seen in parts of Iran.

It is a narrow horizontal tunnel, barely two –and-a-half feet wide and just over five –and- a- half- feet high, dug manually in to laterite hills. The tunnel that made in search of water sources used to have a maximum height just for a man to carry the soil out on this head.

Water obtained from Surangams was used to store in manmade ponds or ‘Mathakkams’ for irrigation and drinking. The experienced surangam diggers identify water streams inside the slopes of hills by observing the growth of certain vegetation on the suface. The direction and pressure of water flow also be detected by pressing their ears to the soil at night. Water available in Surangas usually has lot of herbal ingredients in it because of the sourcing through roots of several Ayurvedic plants and herbals which are aplenty on the stopes of hills where Surangas were made. Thousands of Surangas can be found in Kasaragod North Malabar.

4. KALARIPPAYATTU

Kalaripayattu, an exclusive martial art form of Kerala has it’s origin from 11th century when the Cholas and the Cheras had major wars between them for the supremacy of South India. The northem style of Malabar Kalari is based on flexible movemonts, jumps and weapons training. The Southern (Kerala ) style has prionty on empty hand fighting and pressure point (marma) strikes.

The Legendary warriors like ThacholiOthenan&Unniyarcha we’re following the Malabar Kalari system Kings of North Malabar were competing each other to establish better Kalaris to impart training to the youth so that they could raise better Armies.

Kalari is run under a Gurikal with a strict regime and generally Nair and Thiyya Youth were admitted to such KalariesAyurveda massaging, swimming, horse riding etc were practiced along with kalarippayattu. This Martial arts are popular in some parts of Kannur and Kasaragod.

5. MANGROVES

Mangroves is a salt tolerant shrub that grows in coastal saline and brackish waters. They have a unique sait filtration system and a complex rooting system with a capacity to multiply very fastly. Mangroves preserve the eco system of coastal areas and to certain extent acts as a natural filter against toxic wastes mixed in sea/ River water. Mangroves is a house to hundreds of creatures small and big. Several breeds of sea fish and fresh water fish are being protected by the natural habitat of Mangroves.

The North Malabar have long stretches of Mangroves and journey through these will have unique experience Sacred grove of north Malabar is mostly associated with some myth or belief that people for generations vouch for the need to preserve it at any cost.

Malabar groves are unique where local community pay obeisance to the serene and elegant spirituality associated with the natural resources like water, forest, herbs, medicinal plants and vanod fauna. People attach even a divinity in such groves and arrange undergo certain nituals and prayers. Several stories are attached to each sacred grove and an unseen command from the force hidden in the darkness of such groves knowingly or unknowingly persuade surrounding people to get disciplined and guided to salvation. Groves are considered as the place where spirits rest at night to guard the land and the people around it. Even in severe drought Malabar groves seem to have abundant water resources to provide the needs of the humans and live stock. Such sacred groves are existing in almost every village in North Malabar.

6. VILLAGES FAMOUS FOR CUISINE

A mix of South Canara, Thulunad, Malabar and Central Kerala Cuisine in a blend, from the unique North Malabar eateries. Food habits of Portuguese through Konkini speaking Diasporas, Arabian Cuisines through Malik Bin Dinar and his team, dishes followed for ages by tribal, European delicacies, central Kerala foodies all got blended in North Malabar providing one of the best delicacies of the continent with it’s varied classifications. Several age old cuisine survived the onslaught of fast food culture of the modern times and North Malabar delicacies are highly nutritious, fat free and provocating Village restaurants who with firewood prepare cuisines have a unique system of maintaining quality and hygiene and each cell of the body gets vibrated with energy while consuming such mouth watering delicacies. 7. NORTH MALABAR SPECIALITY CLOTHING

North Malabar is obsessed with some speciality clothing as people are attached with age old customary costumes. They cherish the way their ancestors loved their costumes to identity themselves. Having a population of diverse cultures and more than eleven languages the heritage costumes are still existing albeit timely modifications. To mention a few.

A) ThalangaraThoppl: Thalangara has a reputation of hospitality and that tiny village crushed between the Arabian Sea and Chandragiri river was once a hub for International trade in locally made ThalangaraThoppi. Thalangara which hosted malik Bin Dinar, the legendary disciple of the prophet and whose memory a famous mosque exists, had boasted of having experts in every house hold for hand women skull cap which was internationally famous. ThalangaraThoppi is outstanding and become a proud accessory for every Muslim of Kasaragod and South Canara, was used to export to Middle East and African countries. Of late because of the flooding of cheap, synthetic varieties of skull caps the demand for ThalangaraThoppi has been dwindling. But the uniqueness of this hand women cap with embroidery and pearls is something worth mentioning.

B) Kasaragod sarees: The weavers of Kasaragod, Kumbala, Udmaetc were very particular in articulating deep coloured, multitextured fabrics women in manual weaving machines and has been well sold in upcountry markets. The Thulu speaking fraternity, Konginis , Kannadigas, Marathas etc are very keen to include Kasaragod Sarees in their costume baskets and of course Malayalees who always go for varieties opt for Kasaragod Sarees. It’s longevity , varied designs and textures are contributing a lot which helped to go for a geographical genom for Kasaragod Sarees.

C) Handlooms: North Malabar was predominantly a haven for handlooms and most of the handloom industries were allgned around Kannur. Kannur established itself as the nerve centre for Handloom exports and several SSI units are doing well in that sector. Kasaragod and other northern parts of Malabar like kumbla, Palvalike, Kadakam, Uppala ,Muliyaretc had been in brisk weaving businessvtill very recently. The quality of North Malabar handlooms ere well accepted in upcountry markets and several cooperative weaving societies wre established to support the weavers. Handlooms of late have become a fad to the young generation as well.

8. YAKSHAGANA BOMBEYATTA (PUPPETRY)

YakshaganaBombeyatta (puppetry) is a popular art form of the State of Karnataka and Kasaragod. The northemmost district of Kerala. The puppet show is a parallel tradition of Yashagana the classical dance –drama prevalent in these regions. The puppets, usually made of wood resemble the Yakshagana performers in costumes and ornamentation.

Typically puppet shows feature stories from epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagawatham where different characters are represented by the colourful costumes of these puppets. Some of the puppets can measure up to 18* in height.

The Story is narrated through chorus songs to the accompaniment of percussion instruments. The wooden puppets are made to dance and act by a well trained team of men and women to convey a whole range of emotions and passions where the puppets represent a range of characters through their diversely colored costumes

9. KASARAGOD – A CRADLE FOR MULTILINGUISTIC CULTURE

Kasaragod was once part of South Canara District of Madras province under British Raj. Invasion afther invasion by neighbouring kings in eight abc nineteenth centuries brought with them people of different cuittures and languages.

ChathrapathiShivaji during his invasion brought several Maharashtrians and thus Marathi came to this land. When Portuguese invaded Goa the Konkinisoeaking Hindus and Christians fled for their lives and were rehabilitated by the British at Mangalore and Kasaragod. This Konkini diaspora spread uptoPayyannur and thus Konkini came to Kasaragod Konkini speaking Hindus were smart businessmen and bankers and they changed the economic scenario of the region as well. Thus a multi social Konkini –Christ – Maratha conglomerate started flourishing in the region with all its diversities. Then came Tipu, the King of Mysore who fought fiercely against the British. He invaded several local kingdoms of Naiks, Ballalsetc and attached several forts including bekalfort . With Tipu Sultan came the Urudu speaking .Hanafi sect of Muslims and they were concentrated around Kanhangad and Uppala. Tipu also brought community by name bhat with Kannada also came from Mysore and they were asked to perform temple priesthood in some places. Several Malayalam speaking Nair families are said to be descendants of some families who migrated from the erstwhile Tipu Kochi Kingdom. Their Malayalam is very different from the natal Malayali families. The most popular language in Kasaragod once was Thulu and that Thulu itself has more than twenty variants depending on the area they lived some of the tribels speak Malakkutiya language which appears a mix of Thulu , Malayalam, Kannada and Coorgie. Another language by name byary is widely used among the Sunni Muslims concentrated in the coastal areas like Kasaragod, Kumbala, Uppala, Manjeswar and in large parts of Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka, Byary speaking community is mostly engaged in fishing and trading.

For all these reasons Kasaragod is termed as ‘BahuBhashaBhoomi’ of about eleven different languages. No doubt all these different languages renders of their own different cultures which enriched North Malabar a cradle of multilanguages and Multicultures

The south of Kerala has the most visited destinations by the tourists. They are unaware of the amazing tourist destinations that North Kerala offers. The northern region is an stacksteroids underrated beauty in Kerala and here is a list of 7 best tourist places in North Kerala. If you are looking for a place to travel during vacation, be it a weekend getaway or a long trip, be it with your friends, with your family or solo, North Kerala has so many amazing places that will satisfy the traveler in you. Here are what you can do in the 7 districts of North Kerala.

1. Calicut ( Kozhikode )

Kozhikode also known as Calicut, is the place where Vasco Da Gama landed when he came to India. It is famous for its beaches, food and the polite auto rickshaw ( tuk tuk ) drivers. Kappad beach has a stone monument to commemorate the landing of Vasco Da Gama. Kozhikode beach is a spot where you can visit to see the breathtakingly beautiful sunset. There are small vendors in the beach who sell delicious salted food like mangoes, pineapples and so on.

Beypore is known as the land of boat makers in Calicut. You can see manually wood carved boats called “uru” in the Beypore port. The tasty food is another factor that sets North Kerala apart from the other parts of Kerala. It will be a great miss if you don’t devour on the scrumptious biriyani when you visit Calicut.

2.  Wayanad

“Land of paddy fields” Wayanad has a lot of attractions to offer. From tea plantations to dense forests, dams to magnificent waterfalls the list is endless. It is an ideal destination to getaway from the city life.

Trekking to Chembra Peak is an activity that you can indulge in when in Wayanad. There is a heart shaped lake that never dries on the way to the peak. You can see the stone age carvings of 6000 BC in the Edakkal cave. It takes almost 45 minutes to climb the cave but what you see on the top will be worth it.

Boating in Pookode Lake is a must do activity when in Wayanad. The lake has the shape of Indian map. Freshwater fish and different varieties of birds add to the beauty of the lake. Exploring tea garden, staying in a tree house, visiting the wildlife sanctuary, visiting the Meenmutty waterfalls are a few other things you can do in Wayanad.

3.  Malappuram

Malappuram is one among the places to have pure good quality air certification in India. It’s historic monuments and natural attractions attracts the tourists to this place. Kottakkunnu is a recently developed tourist destination in Malappuram. It has ruins of an old fort constructed by Zamorins of Kozhikode.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is home for over 60 varieties of migratory birds and 100 varieties of native birds.Migratory birds such as terns, seagulls, turn stones and so on can be see in the months of November to April. Nedumkayam Rainforest, Adyanpara Waterfalls, Kodikuthimala, Biyyam Kayal and Kozhippara waterfalls are a few other places you can visit in Malappuram.

4. Kasargod

Kasargod is another less explored beauty which consists of beaches, historic monuments, wildlife sanctuaries and backwaters. Built 300 years back, Bekal fort is one of the well maintained forts in India. It is surrounded by the beautiful beach and also provides a good view of Arabian Sea. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to cover the whole fort. A trip to Kerala is incomplete without exploring it’s backwaters in the houseboat. 6. Palakkad

“Rice Bowl of Kerala” Palakkad is a beautiful town with timeless landscape. It has huge acres of lush green rice field which is a feast to the eyes of the viewer. The largest reservoir in Kerala Malampuzha Dam is located here. Another major tourist attraction, Malampuzha garden is in the front of the dam. The beauty of the garden will take your breath away.

Tipu sultan fort located in Palakkad has an awestricking architecture and interior. If you are someone who enjoys beautiful aesthetic you have to visit this place at least once in your lifetime.

Nicknamed as the second Ooty – Nelliyampathy Hills, is perfect for a weekend getaway. Dense forests, waterfalls and trekking trails are what Nelliyampathy consists of. 7. Thrissur

Calicut (a.k.a. Kozhikode)

Between the lush greenery of the Western Ghats and the azure waters of the Arabian Sea is the historical port town of Kozhikode, previously known as Calicut. Kozhikode was once the entry point and trade centre for foreigners in India. Southern India has a history of trade with the Arabs, the Europeans and the English who made Kozhikode a very significant port town.

Kozhikode is also the most important city for north Kerala tourism as it happens to be the central point from where tourists can travel to the more secluded countryside. At Kozhikode, visit the Beypore shipbuilding yard to see how trading ships are constructed, drop in at a Kalari school where traditional Kerala martial arts are taught and shop at the bustling marketplace, the sweet meat street and Mananchira Square. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary located on the river islands is great for bird watching. The best time to visit the city is in January during the Malabar Mahotsavam.

A quaint little place in the Kasargod district of north Kerala, Bekal is famous for the well-kept Bekal Fort, the golden beach stretching along the sea surrounding the fort, the pleasant backwaters, pristine hill destinations and water sports facilities. The Bekal Fort has a unique keyhole shape and was built in the 17th century for the sole purpose of protecting Bekal against enemies entering via the endless expanse of the Arabian Sea. Guruvayoor (in Thrissur)

Guruvayoor is a temple town dedicated to Lord Krishna surrounded by hills, fresh green fields and a winding river. The Guruvayurappan Temple dates back to the 16th century and the town abounds in legends, mythological stories and elephants.  At night, the temple is lit up with a thousand oil lamps making the walls shimmer.  A dance form specific to Guruvayoor, Krishnattam, is performed in the evening here. Witness an artist enacting the birth of Krishna in a spellbinding performance. A local legend has it that at one such performance, the idol of Krishna was moved to dance by the brilliance of the performance.

Guruvayoor Temple has the unique distinction of owning the largest number of elephants. The best time to visit is during Utsavam in February and March. The start of the temple festival is marked by ‘Anayottam’ or the elephant race. Thousands of musicians and artists flock this temple town during Utsavam to participate in the festivities. While in Guruvayoor, also visit the  wild and beautiful  harbour at Chettuva Backwaters and  Blangad Beach for a mesmerising sunset and a pleasing evening stroll.

Silent Valley (in Palakkad)

The huge expanse of luxuriant greenery enclosed on three sides by high ridges is broken only by River Kunthi descending from the lofty Nilgiri hills to traverse the tropical forest. Silent Valley is opulent in natural beauty and thriving in forest life that really comes alive during monsoons. There is lush greenery everywhere and lurking within it are animals like the lion-tailed macaque, leopard, Nilgiri tahr, tiger, Malabar giant squirrel and hordes of elephants. North Kerala

North Kerala includes the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Malabar is a commonly used name for these areas, although Malabar in true count is a larger chunk extending further up and down.

If you have been to Kerala before and want to travel off the beaten paths, it is time to look seriously at the North.

Plan properly, because North Kerala in general is not as tourism oriented as the South. By doing your research in advance and isolating the best places to see and stay, you can have a great time up North.

For Kozhikode, history is rich and so is local food. Looking at a town which appears nothing more than ordinary, it is hard to picture such ancient glory.

 To the core, Kozhikode is a trader’s place. The main market, Valiyangadi , has a history of 600 years.

That is only the tip. And the iceberg, submerged in oblivion, is a tradition of sea trade of thousands of years. Do you know that Phoenicians, Arabs, Chinese and even King Solomon traded with the ancient kingdom of Kozhikode?

If seeing is believing, get to Beypore, a seaside village where an umpteenth generation of skilled workers toil in the daily grind of manual ship making. Machines are a big no, and with bare hands they bring to existence large Arabian ships known as Urus. Beypore ship building has lasted thousands of years.

While ship making caters to curiosity, remember, there is a fine beach at Beypore too.

If seeing is believing, what about tasting?  The culinary delights of Kozhikode are simply good at overpowering our tastebuds. The recent Malayalam movie “Usthad Hotel” is quite insightful about Kozhikode, in narrating what happens when heart goes into cooking.

Although there are tourist spots such as Sweat Meat Street (SM Street),  Mananchira, Valiyangadi, Mishkal Masjid, Kozhikode beach, Pazhassi Museum, Planetarium and Science lab in town, you are better off in leaving town early to explore the wider district.

Beypore beach and Uru building yard, Tali Temple, Thusharagiri waterfalls, Kappad beach, Canoli canal, Elathur canal, Korappuzha River, Kallai, Lokanarkavu Bhagavati Temple, Peruvannamuzhi Dam and Kakkayam are tourist spots remote from Kozhikode town.

Simply stated, Wayanad defies descriptions.

North Kerala visit without Wayanad, misses the beat, even for those who are convinced that they had a great time elsewhere in North Kerala.

Wayanad district, a mega hill station throughout, is a great venue for nonstop sightseeing. Waterfalls, lakes, shrines, sanctuaries.... you name it, Wayanad has it. Of course, beaches are missing, and that get more than compensated for in the neighbouring district of Kannur, where God has bestowed some of the best beaches of his own country .

Lakkidi, Vythiri, Chembra, Banasura Sagar Dam, Meenmutty, Soochippara, Kanthenpara and Chethalayam waterfalls, Meppadi to soochippara scenic drive, Muthanga wildlife sanctuary, Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary, Pakshipathalam, Kuruva Island, Pookode Lake, Neelimala View Point, Sunrise Valley, Karalad Lake, Edakkal Cave, Tirunelli temple, Allikkunnu Church, Korome Mosque, Thrissilery Shiva Temple, Valliyoorkav Bhagavathi Temple, Seetha Lava-Kusha Temple, Paingatteri Agraharam, Chain Tree, Wayanad Heritage Museum, Muniyara, Uravu, Pazhassi Raja's Tomb, RARS, E3 Theme Park, Phantom Rock and Boys town .....sorry, I did not mean to overwhelm you, the list of tourist attractions in Wayanad does add up significantly.

Memorable for beaches, Kannur has plenty more up the sleeve.

If you are planning to stay in Kannur town, avoid the crowded mid city, an unpleasant experience. The outskirts are more spaced out and hence better.

Kannur city has a few attractions, may take half a day max to cover all. Fort of St. Angelo ( Kannur fort ), Mappila bay, Arakkal Museum are conveniently located in the city outskirts, within easy riding distances.

CVN Kalari in Kannur town is one of the best places in Kerala to experience Kalarippayattu , in its authentic form. Kalarippayattu is an age old martial art, way back from the Vedic times.

Payyambalam , the mainstream beach of Kannur, is a bit disappointing nowadays. A classic case of tussle between two govt departments has put the development of a beach of great potential in a state of limbo.

If you are looking for a hideaway place, blissful beyond belief, check Ezhara beach , part of Kizhunna Ezhara belt. The beaches of Kizhunna, Kadalai, Thottada, Meenkunnu and Chala are all marvels, lined up along the same shore.

Beach talk is incomplete without Muzhappilangad , the drive-in-beach. Created by nature with firm sands, Muzhappilngad, alone attracts many visitors to Kannur, die hard driving fans included.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and the best reminder is Dharmadam , the emerald island aesthetically placed just across the drive-in-beach. By the way, thanks Keats...

In Kannur, Muthappan is almost a household name. We see that name on buses, auto-rickshaws, shops...pretty much everywhere. Muthappan is the deity of North Kerala, and even more so for Kannur.

The main Muthappan Temple (called Madappura) is at Parassinikkadavu , about 16 kms from Kannur. Everyone is welcome, caste and creed not bars. It is a must visit place for those who are interested in culture and religion. At Parassinikkadavu, there is a Snake Park, backwaters and one of the largest Amusement Parks in North Kerala (Vismaya Park).

Far away locations in Kannur District are Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Central State Farm, Pythal Mala, Kottiyoor and Ezhimala beach.

W ith varied landscapes and stunning backwaters, Kasaragod is blessed. One of the prettiest places in Kerala is its northernmost corridor.

Kerala being a mega feast for eyes, very few ventures to reach all that far up. That is changing, as travel folks are discovering two standout locations – Bekal and backwaters.

Bekal attracts most of the visitors to the district. Bekal has a fort, beach, and more importantly, a touch of class.

Valiyaparamba Backwaters has come up as a northern alternative to Alappuzha and Kuttanad waters. Scenic charm alone is winning universal appeal.

Kappil is the local answer to a secluded and heavenly beach. And conveniently, Kappil is only 6 kms from Bekal.              

Kanwatheertha beach, Kareem Park, Ananthapura Lake Temple,  Mallikarjuna Temple, Pallikkare beach, Ranipuram, Chandragiri Fort, Anandashramam, Nithyanandashramam, Madhur Ganapathy Temple, Palakunnu Bhagavathi temple, Mallam Temple, Mallik Deenar Mosque, Bela Church, Kottancheri Hills, Hosdurg fort, Ammadam Kavu and Kottappuram   are the other notable tourist attractions in the district.

A Road Trip Through Untouched North Kerala, Far From The Tourist Trails

A honeymoon destination, a family trip, a wellness break, a luxury getaway: Kerala has become a one stop solution to all these travel needs. A typical Kerala holiday generally includes a stay on the traditional houseboat, a few nights in a fancy resort, Ayurvedic massages, and an array of foods like meen /fish, sadhya , puttu kadala , stew, and the good old beef fry. But, did you know that Kerala also happens to have the longest drive-in beach in Asia? Did you know that Kerala has a strong influence of not only Portuguese settlers, but also Arabic, French, and British? Did you know that Kerala has a unique cuisine called Moplah under its wings, which is a beautiful fusion of Arabic and Kerala cooking? All of these lesser known facts constitute the offbeat, less travelled, and gorgeous region of Northern Kerala.

In this article, we give you a road-trip itinerary to explore the Northern region of Kerala, far away from tourist trails and with a charm quite unknown to the Southern region.

Depending on where you are headed from, you can either start your journey from the northernmost tip of the state, Kasargod and head towards central Kerala or choose to start from Kozhikode and and drive up North. For those flying in, Mangalore(Karnataka) is a perfect place to start your journey from the northernmost corner.

Kasargod is located an hour away from Mangalore, Karnataka and offers a ton of things to do, see, and experience. Kasargod houses the famous Bekal Fort, a 368 years old marvel that spreads over 40 acres of land. The fort shares boundary with the sea and the waves continuously crash into its heights giving the audience a splash of cold showers every few minutes.

The silent backwaters of Northern Kerala

Contrary to the common perception, the northern region of Kerala also has gorgeous backwaters. The good news is that there are not more than 20 houseboats in the backwaters of Neeleshwar (30 minutes from Bekal) which means that you won’t be struggling for parking spots for your boats or waving at strangers as you cruise on the northern backwaters. Also, unlike the south, houseboats in the north are allowed to dock in the middle of the waters making your overnight stay all the more surreal.

A night on the boat and another on land gives enough time to explore the area. If looking for luxury stay, choose Neeleshwar Hermitage , a wellness resort located on the beachfront.

As you drive down from Kasargod, make the next stop in and around Kannur. Like most Kerala towns, there’s nothing ‘happening’ to experience in the city: the city is about the small things. Take your car and drive to Muzhappilangad Beach - Asia’s largest drive-in beach! Much like most of Kerala, the beach is perfectly clean and apt for a calm evening walk or a drive.

While in Kannur, eat the famous breakfast of the region - Kappa(tapioca) with Mutton Chaap. A small eatery in the town centre, called Onakkan Bharati, serves a pretty delicious serving of it. Next, head to the beaches, temples, or sample more food around the city. If you happen to be traveling in the region through the months of October - May, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the ancient ritual called Theyyam . Theyyam is a highly ancient dance, art, worship form performed in the northern region of Kerala and parts of Karnataka - a spellbinding performance you don’t want to miss.

Biryani, beaches, cricket, and natural beauty of a quaint little town will be your next stop on this trip. Thalassery! Not more than an hour away from Kannur, Thalassery can be your base for the night or a day trip from Kannur itself. Given Thalassery isn’t a popular tourist destination, it may not be the easiest to find great accommodations here unless you manage to get a booking at Aisha Manzil, a unique boutique homestay located in the heart of the town.

The MOST important thing to do when in Thalassery is to eat the original Thalassery biryani at the original spot itself: Paris Restaurant! Previously a printing press, this humble eatery has been responsible for creating generations of biryani lovers across Kerala and beyond. You may find inspired versions of this style of biryani in other parts of Kerala and India - don’t miss the original when here.

In the evenings, take a walk into the fish market of Thalassery and find vendors selling fresh mussels, spices, pepper (Thalassery is where the namesake pepper comes from), and seafood bhajji (fritters). You could also pack away treat for family and friends at the Mamballi Bakery (137 years old and probably the first bakery in the state to make cakes) that makes delicious rum - infused plum cakes.

If these aren’t reasons enough to make you fall in love with Thalassery, then this will: Thalassery also happens to have a privately owned (now taken over by the government) island called Dharamadam located just a few metres off its beach. Interestingly, this island can be walked to in low tides. Island hopping has never been easier!

As you begin the ride towards Kozhikode, break for lunch at Vadakara and eat your way through the cuisine of this region that includes Mandi rice, Shawarma, Arabic Mutton Majboos, Arikadukka (stuffed mussels). MRA Restaurant located right on the highway is highly popular among the locals and those crossing the highway regularly.

From Vadakara, Kozhikode is not more than a hour away. Unlike the small towns of Thalassery and Kannur, Kozhikode is a contrast. Stay away from the malls and tall buildings and find the real gems of Kozhikode in its lanes. Visit the Mishkal mosque that barely fits the image of a traditional mosque - no minarets, no capulas, and built like a traditional Kerala Hindu home. How secular is that!

Unlike the South, North Kerala has been able to absorb many cultures into its fabric: Moplah cuisine of Kozhikode, a rich amalgamation of Arabic and Kerala cooking, will tell you that. To taste Moplah foods, snack away at Zain’s Hotel and gulp them down with a hot cup of Sulaimani chai (tea). You may want to save some appetite for Kozhikode’s favorite biryani at Paradise!

With happy tummies and smiling faces, head to Beypore Port and watch the making of Uru boats (old style wooden boats that were used by Arabic sailors and are still used by sailors for various purposes). If you are a history enthusiast, you may also want to locate Vasco da Gama’s point of arrival that happens to be in Kozhikode as well.

As you drive down from Kozhikode, you could stop for lunch at Kadalundi to eat what I can only describe as the ‘best fish meal in the world’ at Ballettans Meenu Kada that operates out of his house.

The 'chechi' behind the show

You can end your trip in Kozhikode or choose to further explore the region by heading to the Silent Valley National Park located off the Malabar coast. The park, rarely travelled by tourists, continues to remain pristine and boasts of housing rarely seen species of flora and fauna including the lion-tailed macaque.

For those heading to Bangalore, take the Wayanad - Bandipur route to spot wild elephants, deers, and more on your way back.

Next time you plan a trip to Kerala, give the south a miss and head to North Kerala. The unique food, the deserted beaches, the silent backwaters, and the multicultural facets of the region will leave an impression for a lifetime.

Kerala is not only about the beaches of Kovalam or the hills of Munnar or the backwaters of Alappuzha; it is also about the rich cultural ethos and the natural wonders of North Malabar. North Malabar is an un-spoilt terrain, with pristine waterfalls, verdant woods and picture-perfect villages.

How far can you go to explore North Malabar? Let’s find out!

Here we present to you some of the wonders explored by the four-day SMiLE Ambassadors Tour for tour operators conducted by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) in the first week of December 2018.

The experience began with the unfolding of a marvelous performance of traditional puppetry of Kasaragod, Yakshagana Bommayatta. Against a dark backdrop, the tiny wooden dolls in vibrant costumes and headgears played out the stories of the great Indian epics.

The aesthetic odyssey continued with the witnessing of a flamboyant performance of Kalaripayattu at the Bekal Fort beach. With intricate techniques, flexibility of body and hand movements, the performance grabbed the interest of audience. The cool breeze and the setting sun added more charm to the whole arena.

One main attraction of the expedition was a journey to a farm house situated in a small village awash with huge leafy trees, majestic coconut palms and slender arecanut trees. An array of sumptuous regional delicacies made from lemon grass, centella (a medicinal plant), tender coconut, jaggery sweet, Manjal Ada (steamed cake wrapped in Turmeric leaf) and so forth welcomed the guests.

Exploring Suranga was truly exciting. Suranga is a traditional water harvesting system which is similar to a horizontal well or cave excavated in hard laterite hills. Adventure-lovers entering these labyrinthine Suranga’s will get a rare opportunity to literally experience Mother Earth at close quarters. Claustrophobes will be advised to maintain a safe distance but they will yet be able to appreciate the ingenuity of the unlettered and ancient inhabitants of this area.

Another interesting destination was a tribal colony called ‘Pattala’ situated at Banam near Nileshwaram where Malavettuvar tribe received the guests with a tribal dance - Mangalam Kali. Little girls in traditional attires excitedly showcased a charming performance of what was once a nuptial dance.

Wonders didn’t stop there, the zig-zag roads then led to a recently found Natural Cave at Koovappara.

Watching the performance of Alamikali, an indigenous tribal art form of Kasaragod, turned out to be a unique experience. Originally performed by ‘Alamis’, the soldiers of Tipu’s army to commemorate the Karbala war, a vital event in the history of Islam, today it stands as a proud testimony to the spirit of religious harmony in the region. Theyyam performances were also conducted as part of the event.

A visit to the recently opened Kannur International Airport marked the end of this excellent experiential tour.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”  

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting. 

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits. 

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day. 

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms. 

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins. 

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.
