The 8 Most Trusted Travel Brands In The U.S.

With that in mind, for the first time, Newsweek, in collaboration with market research partner Statista (a Germany-based research company. They’ve been around since 2007), ranked America’s Most Trusted Companies in 22 industries:

  • Aerospace & defense
  • Appliances & electronics
  • Automotive & components
  • Construction
  • Consulting & professional services
  • Consumer goods
  • Energy & utilities
  • Financial services
  • Food & beverage
  • Health care & life sciences
  • Machines & industrial equipment
  • Materials & chemicals
  • Media & entertainment
  • Real estate & housing
  • Software & telecommunications
  • Technology hardware
  • Textiles, clothing & luxury goods
  • Transport, logistics & packaging
  • Travel, dining & leisure

Here’s how they came up with their rankings:

We looked at publicly traded U.S. corporations in 22 industries with $500 million or more in annual revenues and then surveyed 50,000 U.S. residents. Respondents were asked about companies they knew well and were, asked among other things, if they believed individual companies treated their customers fairly, treated their employees fairly and would be good long-term investments. The result is a list of 400 companies Americans trust the most, ranked by industry. We’ve also noted the state where each is based.

Of course, with such a broad topic such as “travel, dining and leisure,” not all of the 17 “winners” were actually in the travel business – some were restaurants, and non-travel entities such as movie theater chains and gaming were in the mix.

Here’s the list:

17. Wynn Resorts 16. Bluegreen Vacations (timeshare) 15. Texas Roadhouse (restaurant brand) 14. AMC entertainment (movie theater) 13. Penn National Gaming (gaming) 12. TravelCenters of America (truck stop) 11. Choice Hotels International 10. The Cheesecake Factory (restaurant brand) 9. Hyatt Hotels 8. Regis Corporation (hair salon) 7. Brinker International (restaurant conglomerate) 6. Caesars Entertainment 5. Hilton Worldwide 4. Bloomin’ Brands (restaurant conglomerate) 3. Starbucks (restaurant brand) 2. Liberty Tripadvisor 1. Marriott International

So of the top 17, the ones that were actually “travel” were 4 hotel chains, 2 casino chains, an online travel agency and a timeshare.

Our take on this

Frankly, I think they did a disservice to every single category by making them too broad. For example, travel, dining & leisure could easily have been 3 separate categories. And how did a HAIR SALON get included in the mix??? Getting your hair cut is a leisure activity? No, it’s grooming.

And wait…airlines are listed under transport? (by the way, of the 22 winners in that category, Alaska Air was #11, Delta Air Lines was #19, and #22 was…FRONTIER AIRLINES?!?!?! For being trustworthy? Have they not ever heard of the I Hate Frontier Airlines group on Facebook?) Not travel?

Also, although some of the categories would be ones that almost everyone would know, how many people of their random sample would be familiar enough with, say, construction, consulting & professional services, or aerospace & defense, to vote on them? Would anyone outside the state of Texas know about Magnolia Oil & Gas? And really, how many people in the U.S. are going to have a working knowledge of Century Aluminum, American Tower, or Unifi? How equitable is it when you have those brands getting how many fewer votes than, say, Starbucks, because only niche groups of people would be familiar with them?

I was already skeptical when they referred to their ranking as the “first annual.” There’s no such thing as “first annual” – it can’t be an annual event until it’s already happened at least one other time. “First ever?” Yes. “Inaugural?” Absolutely. “First annual?” Nope.

Well, it is what it is. But I take this one with a grain of salt.

The top travel brands and destinations among Americans in 2022

When we reflect on 2021 to get a sense of where travel brands sit with consumers in the new year, several companies have reason to be optimistic. A new report from YouGov analyzes the brands and destinations that managed to break through and resonate strongly with consumers over the last year.    Using data from YouGov BrandIndex - which measures consumer perceptions toward brands on a daily basis - we determined our travel rankings, basing them on each brand’s average Impression score over the course of the last year. Impression is a measure of whether a consumer has a positive or negative impression of a brand.

Download the full report for insights into the trends, challenges and opportunities the travel sector faces in 2022  We looked across airlines, hotels, amusement parks and travel agencies to identify the brands that resonated strongly with US consumers to get sense of their standing in 2022.     Leading all travel brands is Marriott—the world’s largest hotel company—with an Impression score of 44.3. Another collection of hotels under Marriott’s branding, Courtyard by Marriott, also earns a spot on the list at number three (37.2). Courtyard by Marriott has the largest global footprint of all brands in Marriott’s portfolio and is expected undergo a major face lift soon in the form of exterior renovations and landscaping updates by 2024.

In no other country do hotels account for more top ten spots than they do in our US ranking. Their stellar performance this year is likely linked to the popularity of domestic travel in the US amid the pandemic.

Brand USA is a public-private partnership responsible for promoting the U.S. as a travel destination and communicating official visa and entry policies to international leisure and business travelers.

How Brand USA Is Leveling the Playing Field for Travel and Tourism

Brand USA + Skift

Brand USA + Skift

December 21st, 2023 at 10:00 AM EST

With the majority of global travel bookings occurring online, Brand USA and Tourism Exchange USA have joined forces to help introduce international travelers to historically underrepresented destinations, accommodations, activities, and experiences in the United States.

This sponsored content was created in collaboration with a Skift partner.

As global travel spend continues to surge, digital transactions are becoming increasingly dominant throughout the industry. That progress has advanced unevenly, however, and with only about 50 percent of global tours and activities available online — the small businesses that do offer bookings online have limited access to global distribution.

Bridging the digital gap between businesses, communities, and global sellers is crucial for making international travel more meaningful and equitable. Two-thirds of all global travel was booked online pre-pandemic, and Statista projects that number will reach 74 percent by 2027.

That’s why Brand USA , the destination marketing organization (DMO) for the United States, recently partnered with Tourism Exchange USA , a platform where suppliers can manage live availability, pricing, and bookings across multiple distributors. The primary goal of the partnership is to enable small tourism businesses and local DMOs to tap into this demand at a particularly opportune time — according to Skift Research, international travel spend is up 33 percent from 2022.

SkiftX spoke with Staci Mellman, chief marketing officer at Brand USA, and Nate Huff, president of Tourism Exchange USA, to explore why traditional approaches tend to exclude small businesses and understand how their companies’ collaboration is helping bring more international and domestic travelers beyond gateway cities to lesser-known destinations accommodations and attractions in the United States.

Traditional Development Models Present Challenges for Small Businesses

The gap between travelers’ demand for emotionally meaningful experiences and the mandates that major travel companies face to reach commercial objectives is well-documented. But even as small businesses focus on forging emotional connections, it is increasingly difficult to scale their efforts using traditional product development models.

Incurring high manual development costs and investing months or years of work may be table stakes for global corporations — but for small businesses, it can mean the end of the road.

“Even if a small business can take reservations online, they may not have access to global distribution,” Mellman said. “And, even if they’ve solved for distribution on consumer channels, that’s still only the retail side, which means tour operators aren’t able to access commissionable rates. At the end of the day, connectivity is a central challenge for everyone involved, and that’s what we’re trying to solve in partnership with the Tourism Exchange.”

The Exchange serves as a platform fostering diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the tourism economy by connecting historically underrepresented businesses and communities to global markets. By collaborating with the Exchange, Brand USA aims to differentiate the U.S. from competitors through a myriad of unique experiences, empowering new markets and amplifying the impact of international visitation.

Brand USA and Tourism Exchange Collaborate Toward Common Goals

Tourism Exchange USA is an open digital marketplace that connects suppliers and distributors around the world with live inventory and rates. The underlying technology is currently powering independent exchanges in Australia, Japan, and the UK.

“The Exchange is like a digital toolkit,” Huff said. “Our primary function is creating connections between suppliers and distributors — like a match-making service for tourism products. We’re not an online travel agency (OTA), and we’re not trying to provide products directly to consumers. Our goal is to expand the reach and bookability of domestic tourism suppliers globally. We’re letting suppliers and distributors decide whether they want to work together.”

Suppliers can opt in to direct relationships with distributors, who can set their terms, commission rates, and other variables. Any qualifying business or travel product seller can connect through the Exchange, including accommodations, attractions, experiences, events, and retail products. And while offline businesses can use the platform to transition online, businesses with an existing digital presence can use it to achieve both market and channel expansion.

“Maybe a business already has a product on Google and TripAdvisor, but they are interested in connecting directly with market-specific international channels,” Huff said. “As we continue to grow our global connectivity, we hope to offer niche opportunities for businesses to connect internationally, expand market reach, and consider how that diversified approach benefits their broader revenue management objectives.”

Creating Prosperity and Increasing Equity Through a National DMO License

Today’s primary distribution channels on the Exchange leverage global relationships with OTAs, but there is planned expansion into booking sites, tour operators, DMOs, and more. Brand USA’s engagement helps push this vision further by investing in a National DMO License, lowering the barrier of entry for regional, state, and local DMOs to join the Exchange.

“The National DMO License connects Brand USA’s mission of creating community prosperity and directly addresses some of the challenges we are hoping to alleviate for destinations across the U.S., like moving visitors beyond gateways, improving equity of travel’s economic impact, and better connecting visitors with authentic experiences and communities across the U.S,” Mellman said.

Through the collaboration, Brand USA and Tourism Exchange hope to bring tens of thousands of new U.S. travel products online in the next five years. Travel South USA , the first region to take advantage of the new license, has already worked with individual states and local DMOs to promote educational sessions and in-person workshops that have reached hundreds of destinations, suppliers, and distributors.

“We’re excited to be the first region to adopt the Tourism Exchange USA platform,” said Liz Bittner, president and CEO of Travel South. “We are convinced this is game-changing for hundreds of small tourism businesses. This fall, we have invested time and resources in training hundreds of DMOs and their business partners through webinars, presentations at state tourism conferences, and one-on-one meetings. Our goal for international visitation is to reach $10 billion by 2026, and having our authentic food, music, culture, and outdoor experiences available for sale through our valued travel trade partnerships worldwide is vital to our growth. As DMOs, we must include destination marketing and stewardship, which makes it imperative to clear the path for bookings using technology advancements.”

Progress to Date and Future Outlook

Recognizing that this evolution is a marathon, not a sprint, Brand USA’s initial efforts have focused on education and early adopters. After the first year of the partnership, 13 states are actively participating in the Exchange, with 20 states expected to be fully onboarded by 2024.

Already, the Tourism Exchange has signaled its growing significance in shaping the future of the U.S. travel industry by integrating into existing workstreams, participating extensively in trade shows, and participating in global development efforts.

“There are so many amazing places and memorable experiences that want to welcome more visitors but haven’t had the tools,” Huff said.

“By improving the reach of these businesses and communities, we’re expanding international audiences’ understanding of what’s available to them across the U.S.,” Mellman said. “Research shows that when travelers understand the full breadth of experiences available, they tend to stay longer and do more or demonstrate higher intent to return sooner. That’s exactly what we want to achieve.”

I'm a Beauty Editor Who Never Checks a Bag—These Are the Mini Products I Always Pack

The first slice of sunshine and thoughts of nipping away for a long weekend reign supreme. Some respite in Ibiza (I'm thinking of the wellness sect, obvs, not the dancefloor in Pacha) or a warm Tuscan patio with a glistening glass of rosé, wherever the air is warmer and the nights run long is where I'd like to be. What I don't like is having to pay over the odds to take a suitcase with me. So, I've adapted, learning to squeeze everything I might need into an Easy Jet-approved carry-on. And not the type you shove into the overhead compartment, the one that you have to cram under the seat in front of you. Don't believe me? I did 10 days with just shy of a small backpack's worth of belongings thanks to a few handy hacks.

Sacrificing multiple pairs of shoes, wearing your chunkiest item on the plane and waiting until touchdown to buy shampoo , conditioner and body wash are all valiant ways to reduce your bag size. The next very best thing is to shrink your washbag. Not the number of items (by all means, bring three types of SPF ) but the size of each one. I'm talking, of course, about minis; travel-sized haircare, skincare and make-up that slot together inside the minuscule transparent bags handed out before airport security.

best travel sized beauty, travel size skincare, mini skincare, mini makeup

And don't think I'm skimping. I still take enough that, should the fancy take me, I could whip out a smoky eye or slather myself in body highlighter. I'm not trying to take the things I like away, just edit them down to the most bag-friendly size. Here are the mini beauty buys and travel-sized gems your next hand luggage holibobs could do with.

1. THE BEST TRAVEL-SIZED SKINCARE

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Spf30 20ml

SPF is an everyday thing, not just a holiday thing. Sorry to be that person but skin cancer doesn't discriminate between you on the beach and you waiting for the bus. With that said, picking one that works for both is ideal. When it comes in a super small size, like this 20ml winner, even better. The big-size Unseen Sunscreen has been a staple in my routine for yonks, it's genuinely invisible and can be spread on without a mirror. As with all SPFs though, reapplication is key. Fortunately, this mini can be slipped into a pocket or stashed in a clutch.

best travel sized skincare, mini skincare, mini SPF

I'm generous with almost all of the beauty products that come across my desk. This SPF, though? Not at all. My daily sunscreen of choice, it protects my skin and doubles up as a beautiful, luminous primer. It's slightly tacky to the touch which means it sinks into skin quickly and doesn't slide around like thinner, more wet SPFs can. It comes in two travel-ready sizes, 30ml and 10ml, and is gentle enough for ridiculously sensitive skin like mine. In fact, the skincare ingredients Dr. Sturm has included (vitamin E, beta-glucan and purslane) can help irritated, stressed skin recover more quickly.

The Dewy Skin Cream

Ok, I'll admit I'm not generous with this product either. Tatcha's Dewy Skin Cream is a bestseller for a reason. It's hydrating without being gloopy or wet and gives skin a plump, natural-looking glow. No glitter or iridescence in sight. Why's it so good for hols, you ask. Well, it's intensely moisturising and softening, thanks to hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting algae and is exactly the thing to help soothe your skin after a day spent in the heat. All sizes are under the 100ml hand luggage limit but the 10ml is perfect for one to two-night stays and the 50ml for longer jaunts.

Murad Aha/bha Exfoliating Cleanser Travel Size 2 Fl. Oz.

In our small bag world, there's only room for one cleanser. In my world, it's this one: the Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser. Think about it. You're coating your skin in SPF, sweating as the day goes on and likely swiping your face with your hand to wick off some of that moisture. That's a lot of stuff sitting on your skin; some good, others not so good (read dirt). When it comes to getting rid of it, an exfoliator that can efficiently break it down is best. This one has salicylic, lactic and glycolic acid to sort out excess oil, dead skin cells and dullness. Because we're working with limited space, my tip would be to use this for both of your double cleanses. Or, if you happen to pick up a bottle of micellar water, use this second.

Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm

Solid and soft to begin with, this cleansing balm quickly melts to oil when applied to the skin or rubbed between palms and breaks down everything – including waterproof mascara – easily. It's round (something to think about when playing the game of carry-on Jenga) and small enough to work at 50ml.

best travel sized skincare, best mini skincare

I don't buy into the shtick that micellar water doesn't deserve a place in your skincare routine. It's available almost everywhere, doesn't cost the earth and removes make-up efficiently. I wouldn't use it as my sole cleanser but, as a first step, it's brilliant. It's an open secret that insiders swear by the Bioderma Sensibio one but I'm not picky. The Garnier micellar water is as good and, like the Bioderma, can be picked up at the Boots before your gate's called.

2. THE BEST TRAVEL-SIZED MAKE-UP

Saie Glowy Super Gel Mini - Sunglow

My obsession with the beauty brand Saie is well-documented. I just wrote about the Glowy Super Skin Foundation , saying that the skincare-infused product is one of the very best out there for a beautifully dewy base. If I had to pick a favourite though, it would be this, the Glowy Super Gel Mini. Equal parts primer, luminiser, highlighter and skincare, it goes on like a gel – smooth and hydrating. In a pinch, I'd eschew all other complexion make-up, taking this and this alone as my base and highlighter of choice.

Vanish Airbrush Concealer Travel Size

I'm not a full face person. Instead, I like a concealer that sorts out my dark under eyes, corrects the redness around my nose and eyes and lasts the day long. Only two fit the bill for me. The Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer – a waterproof, highly pigmented without looking flat or dull product – and the dewy Make Up By Mario Surreal Skin Concealer. They both blur the skin but steer well clear of looking cakey or seeping into cracks. The fact that Hourglass sell one that's smaller than the average lipgloss makes it my item of choice for holidays or last minute office touchups.

Skin Nova

Little says holiday more like coating every exposed bit of skin with something golden and gleaming. What make-up artist and Viece founder Jamie Genevieve has created in Skin Nova is the perfect thing for it. Ostensibly a primer, it can also be used for myriad other things. Daubed on post-concealer for a wash of luminosity or smoothed onto collarbones, shoulders and thighs.

Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder Mini - Crystal 3g

Even though powder doesn't count towards your liquid allowance, carting around a full-size one isn't necessary. I throw this Nars pressed powder into my washbag, mostly for the fact that it's so small I can easily take it out to dinner should the weather get the better of me. It includes flashback technology which means it won't look stark or pasty in photographs and can be pressed in with a puff or swept on with a brush. Instantly mattifying, it doesn't rid you of glow – just sheen.

best travel sized makeup, mini mascara, travel mascara

So much of what makes a fantastic mascara is down to the brush. Formula fanatics don't @ me. I know the ingredients, viscosity and longevity play a crucial role but a good brush, that separates, fans and lengthens is priceless. Ilia's viral Limitless Lash Mascara comes in a dinky 3g/3ml size and includes the brand's patented double-sided brush. One side sorts out the curl and volume, the other helps to lengthen and separate.

Contour Stylus

Trust me, contour sticks, bronzing balms and cream blushers all count as liquids in the eyes of border security. The multiple run-ins I've had with uniformed-people proves that. Rather than nix the possibility of a carved out cheekbone though, pick one that runs smaller and thinner, like the Victoria Beckham Beauty Contour Stylus. On first glance, you might think it too narrow to create the type of shadow that looks like believable contour. But, it's thinness is what makes precise application that much easier, avoiding the muddy demarcation that can happen when contour is taken too low on the cheek and jaw. Plus, it can double as eyeshadow. A two-fer.

best travel sized beauty, mini beauty, best travel blusher

Refy's cream blush is a holiday no-brainer for a number of reasons. It holds up in hot (and cold) weather and doesn't look obvious on the face. It's highly pigmented, so you'll get a lot of colour payoff even when using a small amount, but it's soft enough to melt into the skin without disturbing what you've already got on. Think real flush, not stripe of blusher.

3. THE BEST TRAVEL-SIZED HAIR PRODUCTS

Color Wow Travel Dream Coat Supernatural Spray 50ml

The first time I used Dream Coat, it felt like a revelation. Not only did my hair not fluff up and frizz as it likes to do but even a hot bath couldn't shake the sleekness. Three days later, my hair was as smooth, albeit a little dirtier, as when the blow-dry had originally been done. Naturally, it became a non-negotiable holiday item. My failsafe for when I want my hair to resist the effects of hot or muggy weather, it's a product I've put multiple friends onto.

Remember, though, be generous when applying it to damp hair. A few spritzes won't cut it, unfortunately. Then, make sure to spend enough time on each section while blow-drying to seal it in. It might feel more laborious in the moment but, days later, when your hair looks and feels just as smooth, you'll be grateful.

best travel sized haircare, mini hair care, best hair oil

Davines are synonymous with understated, luxurious haircare that takes a real stand on environmentally-beneficial practises, sustainable packaging and, put plainly, just trying a bit harder to be good to the planet. They also make some of the most beautiful hair products going. This one – the famous Oi Oil – is packed full of roucou oil and is lightweight, moisture-rich and non-greasy. It helps with frizz, post-swimming tangles and adding heaps of shine. Stunning.

best travel haircare, pattern beauty curl gel, best curl gel

Whenever Tracee Ellis Ross speaks, I listen. The actor and founder of Pattern Beauty is one of the most considered and truly involved (side eye, many celebrity beauty brands) people in the industry and her brand is a testament to that. This gel is medium-hold, so you won't get any of the crispy stringiness that stronger gels can create. Instead, aloe vera, coconut oil and cacay oil help fortify curls, kinks and coils – at home and away.

Almost Everything Cream

There isn't a holiday or overnight stay in the last year that I haven't taken a bottle of the Hershesons Almost Everything Cream with me. It works as a leave-in conditioner, styling cream and flyaway smoother but also for detangling, slicking back and frizz control. A slightly thicker cream, my fine hair only needs a little bit to get the full effect, it adds shine and hydration without looking greasy or shiny on the hair. If you're trying to save space in your bag (aren't we all?) take my word for this part-mask, part-primer, part-texturiser being a ridiculously useful addition.

Wave Spray Travel Size

Sometimes, good hair needs a little extra help. And, if the hair you want is effortless-looking, tousled waves, that extra help comes in the form of Ouai's mini Wave Spray. Forget the scratchy, drying salt-sprays of your tweens, this spray uses rice protein and coconut water to create texture and movement in the hair. If you love it, Ouai sell a travel-sized leave-in conditoner and hair oil, too.

Peyton Manning Talks Importance of 'Mega-Brands' Marriott and Hilton in History Channel Series — When to Watch

The former football player exclusively talked to T+L about why the "iconic" brands were featured in the series.

Hilton and Marriott are getting their time on the silver screen. In an upcoming episode of the History Channel's The Mega-Brands That Built America, executive produced by former quarterback Peyton Manning, viewers are given a front-row seat to the dynamic changes of how the two hotel brands transformed from bare-bones inns to luxury properties.  "I don't think you can mention hotel Mega-Brands without Hilton and Marriott. They're two of the most iconic hotel brands around the world," Manning exclusively shared with Travel + Leisure. "The story about how they were founded is amazing — as you will see in the episode — and the paths they took to become the Mega-Brands they are today is inspirational." The episode, titled “Suite Dreams: Birth of the Modern Hotel,” brings the ‘Mega-Brands’ to life through detailed historical video reenactments spotlighting the business rivalry between Conrad Hilton and J.W. Marriott, as each hotelier aimed to expand their hospitality empire.  "Traveling across the country, you see the names Hilton and Marriott everywhere and not just in the big cities,” Manning added. “Part of the origin story of both brands is finding accessible options for travelers and that is true today." In addition to the historical reenactment scenes, the episode weaves in cultural commentary from leading voices in business and technology, who share context on how hotels have evolved over time. The experts featured include author and business executive Bill Rancic, former Travel Channel host Adam Richman, historian Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, and more.  When reflecting on the first wave of new hotels in the 1930s, Bill Rancic remarked how the founding and growth of the hotel mega-brands was “genius”. “There is a one-stop shop for business travelers, and the whole landscape of hotels changed forever,” Rancic says in the show.

As both Marriott and Hilton continued to grow, they would span countries and add different brands to their portfolio. Marriott owns 30 different brands including the St. Regis, W Hotels, Ritz Carlton, and Westin. Hilton owns 22 brands including Waldorf Astoria, LXR, Conrad, DoubleTree, and Embassy Suites.  The Mega-Brands That Built America is produced by Manning's production company Omaha Productions, in partnership with Lucky 8 Productions and History Channel. The episode airs Sunday, May 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Each new episode of the series will also stream on The History Channel app,  history.com  and across major TV providers’ VOD platforms the day after it airs. Viewers can also watch it ad-free by downloading to own on Amazon Prime Video or wherever you prefer to purchase your favorite series.

City Cruises celebrated the 35 th anniversary of its Spirit of New Jersey sailings on May 7.

The riverboat sailed along the Hudson River, passing the Statue of Liberty, and offered guests a taste of the experience it has been delivering for decades.

" We are thrilled to hit this milestone of offering the beloved experience of scenic dining and entertainment on the water to residents and visitors boarding from New Jersey ," Melissa Klein, regional director of marketing , told TMR. " We look forward to hosting more guests as we continue to expand our offerings at this port as well as across City Cruises’ 22 destin ations ."

Klein noted that the New Jersey sailing is a great way for families to see New York City without the stress of entering the city itself. Over the years, the boat has hosted dinners and brunches, date nights, milestone celebrations and parties, corporate outings, and weddings.

"Outside of the jaw-dropping panoramic views of New York City’s skyline right from the dining table, the dance floor and open-air roof deck lounge, our guests are always thrilled by our seasonal menus that are inspired by the New Jersey/New York area as well as our city-inspired cocktails and live music," Klein said.

City Cruises also recently celebrated its 40th anniversary sailing out of Philadelphia. The brand i s attached to City Experiences, offering many other tour types and a travel advisor sign-up for bookings.
