15 Best Things to Do in Evanston (IL)

On the leafy North Shore, Evanston is a city famed for its diversity and progressive politics.

This is reflected in many aspects of local life, and for visitors it means ethical and sustainable independent businesses, especially in the shopping areas at Main Street and Dempster Street.

Northwestern University, one of the top institutions of higher learning in the country, is right in Evanston and is central to the city’s character. The main campus merits a visit for its excellent art museum.

In fact this is one of a few museums that deserve a visit in Evanston, devoted to topics as varied as Native American cultures, stained glass and Toby Jugs.

1. Northwestern University

Charles Deering Library, Northwestern University

Easily the largest employer in Evanston, and something that contributes to the city’s unique culture is Northwestern University, one of the top research universities in the United States.

A few of the items on this list are university institutions, like the excellent Block Museum of Art or the Dearborn Observatory.

The university is also renowned for its performing arts, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Pharell Williams, David Schwimmer and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are among the alumni.

Be sure to check the calendar for the Wirtz Center for the Performing arts, while sports fans can cheer for the Wildcats on Saturdays during the fall season, when the university’s Big Ten Conference football team plays at Ryan Field.

There’s a pep rally at Wildcat Alley in the hour before kick-off, with local talent and music from the university’s marching band.

2. Block Museum of Art

Block Museum of Art

Something unmissable at Northwestern University is the institution’s highly-regarded art museum.

The Block Museum of Art has been around since 1980, and in 2000 moved into a glass-clad Modernist by Dirk Lohan, grandson and student of Mies van der Rohe.

The collection is sensational, specializing in Chicago graphic art from the 1930s and 40s, American computer-generated art, South African prints from the early 1990s and Midwestern documentary photography.

A few renowned artists featured in the collection are Barbara Hepworth, Carrie Mae Weems, Joan Miró, Max Beckmann, Jasper Johns and Chuck Close.

Visit for expertly curated solo and collective exhibitions. Recent subjects have been Abstraction in the Arab World, American Art Against Anti-Black Violence, Latin American Pop Art and video art by Isaac Julein.

3. Evanston History Center

Evanston History Center

The 30th vice president of the United States, Charles G. Dawes (1865-1951) spent the last forty years of his life in Evanston.

He is remembered in particular for the Dawes Plan (1925), which resolved the issue of German WWI reparations, and which earned him a Nobel peace Prize. Dawes’ Chateauesque lakefront mansion, dating back to 1894, is open to the public for docent-led and self-guided tours.

The property is replete with period furnishings and art belonging to the Dawes family. There’s a portrait of Dawes’ ancestor William Dawes (1745-1799), famous for helping to alert about the approach of British troops at the outset of the American Revolution in 1775.

A tour takes in the library, kitchen, dining room and great hall, and there’s a permanent exhibit recording Evanston’s history, from uninhabited wetlands and swampy forest to the present day.

4. Mitchell Museum of the American Indian

Mitchell Museum of the American Indian

This fantastic museum in the northwest of Evanston explores the history of Native American from paleo-Indians to the present day.

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian was founded in 1977 and its main exhibition is the compelling and artifact-rich Regional Tour of American Indian Cultures.

Here you can find out the traditional ways of life, art and story of Native American peoples in the Arctic, Woodlands east of the Mississippi River, on the Northwest Coast, in the Southwest and on the Plains.

As you go you’ll read well-researched accounts and see examples of weaving, beadwork, Katsina dolls, masks, pottery, bandolier bags, gutskin parkas, snow goggles, canoes and totem poles.

There are also temporary exhibits on a diversity of topics, from jewelry to the Native American heritage of modern Illinois.

5. Grosse Point Lighthouse

Grosse Point Lighthouse

Built in 1873 after a series of maritime disasters, the Grosse Point Lighthouse became the lead beacon guiding traffic on the lake into Chicago.

The lighthouse is still active, with a range of 18 nautical miles, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

You can take a tour of this building, and enjoy the panorama from the top 113 feet above Lake Michigan, while the keeper’s house has interpretive displays.

Close by you’ll find the handsome but long empty Harley Clarke Mansion (1927), in grounds designed by feted landscape architect Jens Jensen.

And down on the lakefront is Lighthouse Beach, one of the best places to spend a warm summer’s day in Evanston.

6. American Toby Jug Museum

American Toby Jug Museum

This sensational museum is devoted to the Toby Jug, a form of pottery jug that emerged in England in the 18th century, as well as the character jugs that derived from them.

The collection is extraordinary, composed of 8,000 pieces, elegantly presented in 97 glass cabinets.

Authentic and characterful 18th-century Toby Jugs are the basis for the collection, and there are 300 in all.

These are displayed along with Royal Doulton character jugs, works of majolica, antique miniatures for dollhouses and a fun display of character jugs spanning the history of pop culture, from Star Wars to Marvel.

7. Shopping

Downtown Evanston

Keen to nurture local businesses, Evanston has several low-rise shopping districts. From south to north, the first of these can be found on Howard Street, and then you’ve got Main Street, Dempster Street, Downtown and then Noyes and Central Street in the north.

Each area warrants exploration and is served by Metra or L stops. Arguably the best place for independent stores is Main Street and Dempster, rolled together as the Main-Dempster Mile.

There you can browse for ethical fashion, Belgian chocolate, fabrics, pet products, hemp/CBD products, vintage jewelry, collectible fossils and minerals, grain to glass liquor and so much more.

Food-wise this area is just as diverse, with everything from Argentine cuisine to Korean-American, gourmet pizza, pan-Asian, kombucha, sushi and sustainable coffee shops.

Back in downtown Evanston, the farmers’ market trades on Saturday mornings from the beginning of May to early November.

8. Halim Time & Glass Museum

Halim Time & Glass Museum

Also in Evanston’s contingent of sensational museums is this attraction with two separate but equally impressive collections.

As the name suggests, the Halim Time & Glass Museum is dedicated to stained glass and timepieces.

When it comes to the former, there are pieces by the masters of the American School, including Tiffany, Lamb, Tillinghast and Sperry.

The Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibit tracks the artist’s creative life, through oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, pottery and stained glass.

The Clocks of the World exhibit is no less enthralling, with more than 1,100 timepieces, counting pocket watches, automatons, chronometers, tall case clocks and tower clocks spanning centuries.

9. Evanston SPACE

Evanston SPACE

Often listed among the best live music venues in Chicagoland, Evanston SPACE is an innovative music hall, established on Chicago Ave, close to Dempster’s L station in 2008.

The genre-hopping list of artists and bands to have performed here over the last decade and change is impressive and features Nick Lowe, Brandi Carlile, David Lindley, Robyn Hitchcock and Terrence Blanchard.

There’s room for audiences of 250, seated at candle-lit round tables, and the venue is also used for lectures, discussions, live radio broadcasts and regular podcast tapings.

10. Clark Street Beach

Clark Street Beach

Just east of downtown there’s a welcoming stretch of waterfront, typically patrolled by lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

To access Clark Beach during the summer season you’ll need a season pass or day pass, while on Mondays there’s free access for Evanston residents.

What you’ll find is an enticing and clean sweep of sand with a large designated swimming area, as well as volleyball nets towards the north end.

And although you’ll need to pay a fee, everything is well maintained, including showers and bathrooms.

There’s a beautiful green space behind at Centennial Park, as well as a big choice of restaurants a few steps away downtown.

11. Dawes Park

Dawes Park

Directly south of Clark Street Beach is possibly the prettiest public park in Evanston. Slightly elevated, Dawes Park is especially lovely early on in the day from spring to fall when you can watch the sun come up over Lake Michigan.

The central feature here is the shallow Arrington Lagoon, which has a pair of fountain jets, a little island at the south end and a stage on the north bank for outdoor concerts in summer.

The lagoon, encircled by grassy banks, is a magnet for water birds and a fine place to while away an hour or two with a book in summer.

In the winter the lagoon becomes a skating rink once the water freezes. Next to the lagoon is the Church Street Power Boat Ramp, at the head of Greenwood Beach, also open to the public.

12. Merrick Rose Garden

Merrick Rose Garden

Understandably a popular place for wedding photo sessions, Merrick Rose Garden is in a leafy residential neighborhood just southwest of downtown Evanston.

Perfectly manicured with geometric beds, a small sunken lawn and clipped shrubs and hedges, the garden is planted with upwards of 2,000 roses from more than 200 varieties.

This space was first laid out in 1948, and at the south end is the much older Centennial Fountain, purchased by public donations in 1876.

The current fountain is a replica cast in 1912, and renovated in 1951, 1988 and most recently in 2000.

13. Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park

Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park

This park is right on the North Shores Channel, which marks Evanston’s western boundary.

On the west bank, the linear park continues for two miles, divided into four half-mile sections. It was created in the late 1990s on what was previously disused land, and at the time of writing there were over 60 sculptures on show, among lawns, trees and shrubs.

These works are composed from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, bronze, concrete, salvaged aircraft aluminum, redwood, stoneware or fired clay.

Among the artists involved are prominent sculptors like Rüdiger Seidt, Stacy Latt Savage and Fisher Stolz, but also groups of students of local high schools.

14. Dearborn Observatory

Dearborn Observatory

Something intriguing on the Northwestern University campus is this astronomical observatory in a Richardson Romanesque built with rusticated limestone in 1888.

The facility dates back earlier, to the 1860s, operating what was then the largest refracting telescope in the world. In 1939 the entire building had to be moved a few hundred feet to the southeast to make way for the university’s Technological Institute.

You can visit the Dearborn Observatory on Friday nights for public viewing sessions inside the dome. This structure has distinctive aluminum cladding, and its hand-crank mechanism was replaced with an electric motor in 1997.

15. Baha’i House of Worship

Baha’i House of Worship, Wilmette

Dating back to the 19th century, the Baháʼí Faith is a new religion, the core tenet being the fundamental unity of all the world’s religions.

At the time of writing this article, the faith had established ten houses of worship around the world, in places like Langenhain, Germany, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Santiago, Chile and Sydney, Australia.

But the oldest of all, completed in 1953, can be found by the entrance to the North Shores Channel in nearby Wilmette.

Open as a devotional space for any faith, the temple is under a majestic dome, rising to 138 feet and surrounded by fountains and gardens.

There’s seating for 1,191 people here, and the architecture is imbued with symbols from all the major religions, notably on the exterior pillars where the profuse mouldings contain the Star of David, the star and crescent, the Christian Cross and swastika motifs for the Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

Because it is a suburb, Chicagoans sometimes overlook Evanston as a viable destination for dining out. That’s an error in judgment, as it directly borders Chicago to the north and is easily accessible via car, or even the CTA’s Purple Line.

A charming college town, Evanston is packed with places for cheap eats, from late-night pancakes and eggs to casual spots for lunch and dinner, to coffee shops for working and studying. It also has upscale dining spots for seafood, steaks, and wine. Below, find Eater Chicago’s picks for its essential bars and restaurants.

Mustard's Last Stand

A monument to tailgate culture for more than half a century, this tiny hot dog stand just steps from Ryan Field remains a game day destination for teeming hordes of Wildcat adherents hungry for victory and encased meats. The scene is far less chaotic when the team is on the road, transforming Mustard’s Last Stand into a charming escape for a burger on the patio.

Dave's Italian Kitchen

Once one of the most popular spots in downtown Evanston, Dave’s Italian Kitchen abruptly shuttered in 2016, only to quickly reopen further north on Noyes with a wide selection of pasta, pizza, and traditional chicken dishes. Prices remain low and while the restaurant is no longer BYOB they offer a selection of affordable wines by the glass and bottle as well as beer from Evanston’s Sketchbook Brewing Company.

Soul & Smoke

Chef D’Andre Carter has made a big splash in Chicago with his rich, smokey barbecue and soul food like shrimp and grits, earning a sizable following that’s spawned virtual outposts and a food hall stall. Now ranked among the area’s top barbecue contenders, Soul & Smoke actually originated in Evanston and patrons can still snag pickup orders from the operation’s out-of-the-way home base. The brisket is world class and a full restaurant is in the works. An expansion is in the works.

Hecky's Barbecue

More than three years have passed since the death of Hecky Powell, who in 1983 brought his Chicago-style aquarium-smoked meats to suburbanites at his restaurant, Hecky’s Barbecue. His legacy, however, remains and continues to fill the bellies and hearts of Evanston locals with Creole recipes passed down from his mother and grandmother. Hecky’s biggest hits include rib tips, hot links, brisket, and its signature Juneteenth Strawberry Soda.

FONDA cantina

Veteran chef Michael Lachowicz (Aboyer, George Trois) casts a spotlight on the culinary skill and vast knowledge of his business partners — chef Miguel Escobar, sous chef Carlos Cahue, and wine director Sergio Angel — at Fonda Cantina, a bright and casual bar and restaurant. The chefs draw on their grandmothers’ cooking in Huandacareo in Michoacan and Huitzuco in Guerrero to present tender chile relleno (queso Oaxaca, pintos martajados) in a pool of tomato marjoram sauce, pork rendering-laced sope manteca, and a late-night selection of tacos like al pastor, carne asada, and gobernador.

Buffalo Joe’s - Howard St.

Is a Northwestern student who can’t handle spicy foods called a “Mildcat?” Buffalo Joe’s will welcome those tame eaters, though the real fun involves eating the joint’s famous spicy wings. D’Andre Carter acquired an appreciation for barbecue at an early age, when he helped his grandma prepare Sunday dinners for family and friends. After working at some of Chicago’s premier restaurants, Carter partnered with Heather Bublick to open Soul & Smoke, a fast-casual joint featuring slow-cooked meats, with impressive attention to detail. Spring for musts like smoked brisket, mac and cheese, and cornbread muffins, and go big on the sauce—it’s Chef’s signature creation.

2.  Buffalo Joe's

  • Rogers Park

College students and locals line up for Buffalo Joe’s signature crunchy, greasy wings; simple but quality char burgers; and crispy waffle-cut fries, which are great with ketchup or doused in nacho cheese. The spot is cash-only and the decor is pretty basic, but the food is at its best fresh out of the deep fryer. All of the sauces are fairly mild so don’t be afraid to go up a level or even try the suicide, which is topped with slice jalapenos.

3.  The Barn Steakhouse

Inspired to open a modern steakhouse in honor of her father Arnie Morton (of Morton’s The Steakhouse), Amy Morton opened this smart, welcoming restaurant in the heart of downtown Evanston. Situated in a 19th-century barn that once served as a horse stable for Borden Milk, the space boasts soaring ceilings, a well-dressed bar and rich, mahogany hues throughout. Settle in for sophisticated eats from James Beard-winning chef Debbie Gold, including a caviar sandwich, roasted half chicken and a solid surf-and-turf selection.

  • Recommended

Be prepared to get messy when ordering a four-ounce griddled burger or juicy eight-ounce char-grilled burger, with your choice of toppings like giardiniera and sauteed mushrooms,  at Edzo’s. The no-frills counter service spot dishes out trays of excellent hand-cut fries slathered in buffalo sauce or garlic butter plus rich milkshakes that are so big you’ll get a bit of extra on the side. You’re sure to leave full, happy and hopefully without sauce on your shirt.

Oceanique

5.  Oceanique

  • price 3 of 4

Oceanique is a true family affair, with chef and owner Mark Grosz preparing creative seasonal dishes while his wife, Renee, serves as general manager and their sommelier son Philippe suggests pairings from their cellar of more than 750 bottles from around the world. The elegant space specializes in seafood from chilled oysters to wild caught swordfish and lobster, available a la carte or as a tasting menu.

Hewn

6.  Hewn

Hewn owner Ellen King had been making bread in her home kitchen for an "Underground Bread Club" when word and demand quickly grew. Soon enough, she partnered with longtime customer Julie Matthei to open the bakery, where the team employs an entirely in-house and from-scratch approach for their daily goods. Opt for loaves like the country or whole wheat seeded, and when it comes to pastries, don’t miss the monkey bread or morning buns.

LeTour

7.  LeTour

The team behind The Barn opened this French American brasserie within a striking, mid-century “rotunda” building in downtown Evanston. The menu showcases dishes rooted in French technique and Moroccan influences, as evidenced by orders like lamb couscous (with merguez sausage and chickpeas) and grilled oyster mushroom kebabs (with French lentils and sumac). Patio season can’t come soon enough—they boast one of the largest alfresco spaces in town.

8.  Kabul House

Kabul House proved so popular it had to move from downtown Skokie to Evanston to find more room to accommodate diners. The large space is great for groups looking to get a taste of Afghan food with platters of grilled kabobs and lamb chops served with saffron rice sweetened with raisins and shredded carrots. Vegetarians will find a lot to love with excellent salads and spiced roasted eggplant topped with garlic yogurt.

Evanston Chicken Shack

9.  Evanston Chicken Shack

One of the few places in Evanston serving food until midnight, Evanston Chicken Shack has been fueling late night study sessions and satisfying post-bar cravings for more than 30 years. Crispy and juicy chicken breasts, thighs and legs are served atop a slice of white bread with crinkle cut fries covered in your choice of sauce, such as honey barbecue or Jamaican jerk. The rib tips are also top notch (seriously).

Bennison's Bakery

10.  Bennison's Bakery

A true Evanston institution, Bennison’s has been open since 1938 and run by the same family since 1967. Lines regularly stretch out the door on weekends, when families flock in for baguettes and sourdough along with sweet treats like sprinkle-covered doughnuts and tart lemon bars. There’s always something special available for holidays, whether it’s banana cream paczki, traditional German stollen or chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Union Pizzeria

11.  Union Pizzeria

Evanston's top spot for pizza is also a must for music—it’s attached to SPACE, an intimate concert venue hosting acts like The Lumineers, John Hiatt and Suzanne Vega. Score tickets to an upcoming set and fuel up beforehand with the restaurant’s raved-about pies. Crusty-chewy dough is topped with the likes of lamb sausage, broccoli or bacon (and for takes on Detroit-style ‘za, check out their neighboring sister spot Union Squared). The small plates and specials here rotate with the seasons—opt for musts like Calabrian sausage-filled dates or PEI mussels, with Pernod, saffron and fennel.

Double Clutch Brewing Company

12.  Double Clutch Brewing Company

Named for its collection of rare and classic cars, Double Clutch Brewing Company always has something going on from trivia to live music to bingo to brewmaster-led tours and tastings. The brewery, which has earned accolades from the Great American Beer Festival, focuses on German styles like helles lager and kolsch, which complement dishes like pork schnitzel, smoked brats and pierogies.

13.  Zentli

The owners of Skokie favorite Libertad opened Zentli in Evanston in 2023, with the more casual concept delivering the same creative approach to Mexican fare. Named for the Nahuatl word for corn, the restaurant offers a wide variety of tacos including housemade chorizo and a vegan mushroom tinga wrapped in blue corn tortillas and served with cilantro, onions and green and red salsa. Complete the meal with a Chicha, a mezcal cocktail made with purple maize, hibiscus and pineapple.

Picnic

14.  Picnic

Those on the go but seeking a good-for-you fix will find it at this carry-out spot, which specializes in expertly crafted salads and grain bowls. Expect a locally driven menu packed with flavor, found in options like the Ode to the Roast Veggie (with cauliflower, carrots, sweet potato and almond quinoa crunch) or the New School Chicken Salad, a Waldorf salad riff turned house favorite. If you’re jonesin’ for something sweet, you’re in luck—Kiki Bakes Pie whips up finales like lemon tart and chocolate chip cookies.

The Graduate Homestead Room

15.  The Graduate Homestead Room

  • American creative

Housed within the Graduate Evanston hotel, this restaurant features updated takes on traditional American dishes. The kitchen spins out flavorful plates like king salmon rillette with chips, herbs and endive; braised lamb shank with lentils and root vegetables; and cacio e pepe gnocchi with pecorino romano and black pepper. The drinks list draws inspiration from local movie mogul John Hughes’ 1980s hits for the shiso and St-Germain-laced Don’t You Forget About Me and the Planes, Trains, & Automobiles, a modern play on the paper plane.

Fonda Cantina

16.  Fonda Cantina

Celebrated chef Michael Lachowicz and the George Trois Group opened a Mexican concept in Evanston in 2023. Inspired by the roots of its team, Fonda Cantina offers an authentic taste of regional Mexican cuisine through generational recipes from the staff’s family and hometowns. Enjoy dishes like shrimp ceviche, quesabirrria, carne asada and barbacoa de res, paired with classic sips like a margarita and paloma.

Pono Ono

17.  Pono Ono

After working at popular restaurants in Boston and Chicago, Jack DeMar opened this poke restaurant, an ode to his Hawaii upbringing. Enter a lush urban escape (adorned with more than 100 plants), saddle up at a table and get to work ordering. More than a dozen different options are on offer, with specialties like the spicy tuna or citrus salmon (with edamame, onion and miso citrus sauce). Wear a Hawaiian shirt for fun, and for perks—those who do receive a 10 percent discount on orders.

Campagnola

18.  Campagnola

The focus here is on good food made with good ingredients. For an edible slice of heaven, try the salmon with braised lentils and horseradish creme fraiche, octopus with braised gigante beans and honey or balsamic-glazed short ribs. Peruse selections from their predominantly Italian wine list, which offers some exciting pairing possibilities.

Joy Yee Noodles

19.  Joy Yee Noodles

The Joy Yee mini empire took root in Evanston back in 1993 and continues to pack in the crowds. Stop in for mussels with chili paste, garlicky chicken or a gargantuan bowl of pho. Enjoy it all alongside any of their teas, which include flavors like rose, mango and lychee.

Lucky Platter

20.  Lucky Platter

Visit this mainstay for quirky décor and comfort fare, such as buttermilk fried chicken, pot pie and a medley of hearty sandwiches (from Philly cheesesteaks to BLTs). The menu also features several versions of eggs benedict, a solid burger lineup (including a half dozen renditions) and global influences found in dishes like tandoori grilled salmon and chicken piccata.

Northwestern to Lead Midwestern Carbon-Capture Hub

Project receives nearly $4 million to test feasibility of direct air capture technologies.

Carbon capture

Recognizing that carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal is a critical tool for thwarting the worst of climate change impacts, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has dedicated billions of dollars to explore the potential of direct air capture (DAC) technologies that can pull CO 2  out of the atmosphere.

Jennifer Dunn, Ted Sargent

Regional DAC Hubs are a key part of DOE’s strategy and are supported with $100 million in DOE investments. Northwestern University is leading one of these hubs with nearly $4 million invested by DOE and partner companies. The award will be administered through the  Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy .

The DOE-funded projects will work to demonstrate the capture, processing, delivery and sequestration or end-use plans for captured carbon. Called the Midwest Nuclear DAC Hub (MINDAC), the Northwestern-led program will unite a diverse group of research and commercial partner institutions to test the feasibility of using a zero-emission nuclear fleet to power air handling units that remove CO 2  from the atmosphere.

MINDAC, which officially started on May 1, is one of only two DAC hubs located in the Midwest as well as one of two hubs with plans to harness nuclear energy as a power source.

Funded by the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and the Inflation Reduction Act, the Regional DAC Hubs Program will accelerate the demonstration and deployment of DAC technologies, supporting efforts to create jobs, reduce pollution and reinforce the United States’ global competitiveness in clean energy technologies.

After feasibility testing and engineering are complete, together these Hubs are expected to capture 1 million metric tonnes of CO 2  annually from the atmosphere. This is 250 times more CO 2  than the largest operating DAC facility currently removes.

“While we need to amplify efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all economic sectors, given the urgency and severity of climate change we need all options on the table — full speed ahead,” said Northwestern Engineering’s  Jennifer Dunn , the principal investigator of the project. “These options include direct air capture. We are excited to work with all our MINDAC partners and the Department of Energy to build a viable carbon capture hub in our region.”

While we need to amplify efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all economic sectors, given the urgency and severity of climate change we need all options on the table — full speed ahead.

Jennifer Dunn Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering

An expert on the environmental impacts of emerging technologies, Dunn is a professor of chemical and biological engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering, director of the  Center for Engineering Sustainability and Resilience , and a faculty affiliate of the Trienens Institute.

MINDAC’s co-principal investigators are:  Ted Sargent , the Lynn Hopton Davis and Greg Davis Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern’s  Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences , a professor of electrical and computer engineering at McCormick, and co-executive director of the Trienens Institute;  Omar Farha , the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry at Weinberg and (by courtesy) professor of chemical and biological engineering; and  Brad Sageman , a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at Weinberg and co-director of the Trienens Institute.  Mar Reguant , a professor of economics at Weinberg, will serve as a senior adviser.  Ke Xie , a research assistant professor in Sargent’s laboratory , will serve as the Hub’s project manager.

“This initiative will make an important contribution as we develop solutions to tackle the global challenge of climate change,” Sargent said. “The issue requires diverse solutions — ones that can be used in combination with one another — and this includes direct air capture. As one of the world’s leading universities in engineering, materials science, chemistry, and the social sciences, Northwestern will bring unparalleled expertise to this vital initiative.”

From intensifying storms to declining biodiversity to rising sea levels, the tragic effects of worsening climate change are becoming more visible each year. According to the United Nations, emissions need to decrease by 45 percent by 2030 in order to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Simply decreasing the volume of emissions is not enough. To hit this critical target, scientists estimate that billions of tons of CO 2  also must be removed from the atmosphere.

DAC technologies can reduce this lingering legacy CO 2  by literally pulling it out of the air. The CO 2  then can be safely and permanently stored deep underground or upcycled into valuable products, contributing to a circular carbon economy.

“The Illinois Basin has a number of deep rock formations with favorable properties for CO 2  storage,” Sageman said. “And successful CO 2  sequestration already has been demonstrated in the basin.”

For multiple reasons, the Midwest is uniquely positioned as an ideal location for a DAC Hub. Home to industry and high-traffic roadways, the Midwest region is a large emitter of CO 2  in the United States. As a consequence of climate change, the region is subject to extreme temperature and precipitation fluctuations — with cold air masses from the far north converging with warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico.

The issue requires diverse solutions — ones that can be used in combination with one another — and this includes direct air capture. As one of the world’s leading universities in engineering, materials science, chemistry, and the social sciences, Northwestern will bring unparalleled expertise to this vital initiative.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Illinois also has  the most nuclear power of any state in the nation , making nuclear energy an attractive and reliable zero-carbon energy source to power the capture process. Nuclear energy facilities also produce abundant waste heat, which can be integrated into capture facilities to further reduce energy costs.

“Incorporating CO 2  captured from air into building materials or plastics can sequester carbon,” Dunn said. “Alternatively, processes can convert captured CO 2  into fuels that can replace energy from fossil fuels. When the processes that capture CO 2  use nuclear power, the potential for carbon neutral or carbon negative products and fuels arises, which is very exciting.”

MINDAC’s feasibility study will develop a model to integrate carbon capture technologies, manufacturing at scale, CO 2  utilization, and CO 2  transportation and geological sequestration. To unify expertise in nuclear energy, DAC technologies, site development and manufacturing, Northwestern has partnered with a host of major research and industrial partners including Argonne National Laboratory, Constellation, Siemens, 3M, Energy Capital Ventures, LanzaTech, RepAir, and Avnos.

Each partner will bring a specialized contribution to the team. Global leaders in DAC technologies, RepAir and Avnos will test the carbon capture and carbon removal systems. With the largest nuclear fleet in the nation, Constellation will explore the viability of its clean energy centers to supply carbon-free nuclear power to the MINDAC Hub. LanzaTech, a carbon capture and use company that uses synthetic biology to convert waste carbon into materials and higher-value products, will explore uses for the captured carbon.

“RepAir Carbon's electrochemical technology operates solely on electricity, without the need for heat, enabling ultra-low energy consumption,” said Amir Shiner, CEO of RepAir. “Today, as direct air capture requires a baseload, low-carbon power source, RepAir emerges as an ideal solution for integration with nuclear power supply. We are honored to be included in Northwestern's DAC hub and to be collaborating with such strong companies.”

Northwestern has a long legacy of leading DOE hubs and being at the forefront of carbon capture research. The newly launched  Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen  (MachH2) serves as the most recent example, with Dunn as the project’s chief decarbonization officer. Farha also leads one of nine projects selected by the DOE to study carbon capture systems. His team studies metal-organic frameworks, porous materials with uniform structures that are promising solid sorbents – a sponge of sorts for capturing CO 2  from air.

“Finding ways to remove and store carbon directly from the air is an absolute necessity in our fight against the climate crisis,” Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said. “This investment in carbon capture technology research through universities and DOE laboratories will position America as a leader in this growing field, create good-paying jobs, and help make our carbon-free future a reality.”

AI expert available: Google’s AI-integrated search

EVANSTON, Ill. — Yesterday, Google unveiled plans to integrate its search engine with artificial intelligence (AI). Kristian Hammond , an AI expert at Northwestern University, says it’s a great idea but needs further validation.

Hammond is available to explain how large language models work, to discuss the problems with Google’s new AI-integrated search engine and to comment on how he expects the revamped search will influence other tech companies. He can be reached directly at [email protected] .

Hammond is the Bill and Cathy Osbourn Professor of Computer Science at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering , director of the Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence and director of the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program. An AI pioneer, he also cofounded tech startup Narrative Science , a platform that used AI to turn big data into prose. Narrative Science was acquired by Salesforce in late 2021.

Comments from Professor Hammond on readiness:

“Integrating AI with search is a stunningly great idea, but it’s not ready. Given that it’s not ready, Google is essentially turning the entire world into beta testers for its products. Search is at the core of how we use the Internet on a daily basis, and now this new integrated search is being foisted upon the world. Running too fast might be bad for the products, bad for use and bad for people in general.

“In terms of the technology at the core of the model, it has not yet reached a point where we can definitively say that there are enough guardrails on the language models to stop them from telling lies. That still has not been tested enough or verified enough. The search will block users from content or give users content without allowing them to make decisions about what is a more authoritative or less authoritative source.”

On blocking content:

“With language models like Gemini and ChatGPT, developers have put a lot of work into excluding or limiting the amount of dangerous, offensive or inappropriate content. They block content if they feel it might be objectionable. Without us knowing the decision-making process behind labeling content as appropriate or inappropriate, we won’t know what is being blocked or being allowed. That, in itself, is dangerous.”

On content creators:

“The new search will provide information from other websites without leading users to those sites. Users will not visit the source sites, which provide the information and allow their content to be used. Without traffic, these sites will be threatened. People, who provide the content that is training the models, will not gain anything.”

On competing companies:

“We’re in the midst of a feature war. Tech companies like Google are integrating new features that are not massive innovations. It’s not that technology is moving too fast; it’s the features that are being hooked onto these technologies that are moving fast. When a new feature comes along, we get distracted until the next feature is released. It’s a bunch of different companies slamming their features against each other. It ends up being a battle among tech companies, and we are the test beds. There is no moment where we can pause and actually assess these products.”
