A Roadmap to What’s Ahead

As you get started on your Wake Forest journey, we want to share some important practical information about things you will need to be doing over the summer, as well as how to prepare mentally for some of the college adjustments to come.

Email

Check your WFU email regularly

Throughout the next few months, you will be regularly receiving emails at your WFU email address that will contain information about important dates, opportunities and summer tasks. Students should check their WFU email account regularly—at least once a week if not more often—in order to stay up-to-date.

Checklist

Work through the New Student Checklist

The New Student Checklist shows all of the tasks you must complete over the summer, as well as when they are due. Please ensure you are taking care of all tasks by their deadline. This will be great practice for navigating the fall semester independently!

Mentally Preparing for the Adjustment to College

College is filled with lots of adjustments. Here’s a few you want to start thinking about over the summer.

You’ve got this!

Wake students in class

College isn’t supposed to be easy. Nothing worthwhile ever is. This experience that everyone has told you will be the time of your life can be pretty uncomfortable at times. You are joining a new community, living with strangers and wrestling with high-level academics.

The highs and lows of college are real, and opportunity awaits in how you choose to handle both. Use the resources on campus (we will talk about those throughout this website!), seek help when you need it and push yourself past the limits of your comfort zone. No one succeeds on their own.

Regardless of how it may look or feel, you are not alone—in your struggles or achievements. Be relentless, genuine and unapologetic in pursuit of your growth. It’s why you’re here.

Finding your people

Wake Forest students

If you miss the life you had before college, you’re not doing something wrong. It means you’re human. When change threatens the familiarity of routines and relationships you spent years building, it’s only natural to want your normal back. It will take time to build a new network here, and that timetable is different for everyone. For a lucky few, it’s friendship at first sight with a new roommate. For many others, that’s simply not the case. It takes patience and more than a little bravery to find your place and your people.

“At first, I felt so different from everyone else. But there are a ton of niches here for you to grow and find your people.” Mariana Trabinino (’21)
“Take advantage of Office Hours. Faculty want to get to know you.” Morna O‘Neill, Associate Professor of Art

You’re running the show

For maybe the first time ever, you are in charge. You can choose to hit the books, sleep till noon, eat whenever and whatever, head downtown, drive to the mountains, hang out alone in your room or party all night with friends. Increased personal freedom and responsibility are a big part of college. And a lot of what you learn will come from experiences outside the classroom. Embrace it. But choose what you do wisely. Rules can be a good thing when you come up with them yourself. And remember — you’re on your own, but you’re not alone. We are here to help, but it’s on you to make it happen!

“Do not try to ‘fake it until you make it.’ That’s a huge disaster. Tell someone what you don’t know and be vulnerable in the moment.” Jarrod Atchison ( ‘01, MA ‘03), Director of Debate and Associate Professor, Department of Communication

It’s about time (managemen t)

Managing your time can be a challenge. College won’t be as structured as high school, and freedom overload can get the best of even the most organized student. You’ll be juggling tough class assignments and countless opportunities to avoid them. Plus, there’s laundry. It’s a balancing act, and all the new responsibilities can be overwhelming. So take a deep breath, and ask for help when you need it. With a little trial and error, you’ll find a formula that works for you.

Luckily, CLASS Academic Coaches are ready to help you with your time management challenges! Schedule a one-on-one meeting with an academic coach to discuss time management strategies and more to help you find success this first semester and beyond.

“Don’t be afraid to say ‘no.’ It’s just not possible to do everything.” Sandeep Mazumder, former department chair and Associate Professor of Economics

Where You Belong

The freedom to be exactly who you are and explore who you want to be, surrounded by the resources necessary for each student to reach their full potential.

The Wake Forest experience is deep, layered and designed to challenge and support the development of the whole student simultaneously. Our entire campus is a classroom. Here, living and learning are forever combined within a diverse community of individuals. The residential commons model is a structure intentionally designed to connect students to the resources they will need to thrive at Wake Forest.

In many ways, a deeply connected residential experience is not new to Wake Forest. The commitment shown to each student by our faculty and staff is, and has been, a foundational element of an ever-evolving engaged liberal arts model. By branding, documenting, and building an even more supportive structure around a strong culture of community, we are further enhancing that which makes Wake Forest distinct.

Within this residential experience, we will curate an environment students can make their home – a home where living and learning are inseparable.

Last week, we partnered with @leadershape to host our first-ever LeaderShape Institute! Through self-assessment, intensive small group discussions, team-building challenges, and more, participants develop a vision for something they care about, bigger than themselves. A four-day immersive experience, the program brings together students and staff facilitators for a leadership opportunity that deepens, stretches, and challenges the leadership integrity of student leaders. With over 17 student organizations represented, the program brought together a wide range of leadership experiences that collectively represent the #WFU student experience. To see more of our participants’ experience as the first LeaderShape Institute cohort at @wfuniversity, visit campuslife.wfu.edu/leadershape. #OurMottoMeansMore 🎩

Parents of PGA TOUR, Wake Forest golfer Grayson Murray release statement on his death

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States at 988 or visit their website

(WGHP) — The parents of professional golfer Grayson Murray have released a statement following his death at the age of 30.

The statement reads:

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare. “We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. “Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed. “We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now. “Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. “Thank you.” Statement from Grayon Murray’s parents, Eric and Terry Murray

Murray, a North Carolina native who was born in Raleigh, attended Wake Forest University.

He won his second PGA TOUR title in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii. His first victory came in 2017 at the Barbasol Championship.

“We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Kurtz sparks Wake Forest to 9-5 victory over North Carolina for spot in ACC Tournament semifinals

  • Copy Link copied

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit a two-run home run to ignite a four-run 12th inning after his two-out RBI double tied the game in the ninth and No. 8 seed Wake Forest defeated top-seeded North Carolina 9-5 on Friday night to advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals.

Wake Forest (38-19) will play No. 2 seed Clemson in the first semifinal on Saturday. No. 6 seed Duke and 11th-seeded Miami square off in the second one. The two winners will play for the championship on Sunday.

The Demon Deacons got the win despite wasting a stellar performance from starting pitcher Chase Burns.

Burns struck out 15 in six shutout innings and left with a 4-0 lead before North Carolina (42-13) rallied against the Wake Forest bullpen.

The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Marek Houston sent a 2-2 pitch from Tar Heels starter Shea Sprague over the fence in left field.

The lead grew to 2-0 the next inning on a home run to left field by Adam Tellier.

Wake Forest pushed across two more runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-0 advantage. Liam Willson drew a leadoff walk and catcher Cameron Gill, the No. 9 batter, followed with the Demon Deacons’ third home run of the game.

Blake Morningstar replaced Burns to begin the seventh and left after walking the only two batters he faced. Will Ray took the mound and allowed three runs to score before striking out Alex Madera with two on to end the inning with a 4-3 lead.

The Tar Heels went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning on Vance Honeycutt’s RBI double and a run-scoring single by Parks Harber.

Ben Shenosky (5-3) earned the win by getting the final two outs in the 11th.

Ben Peterson (2-2) took the loss for the Tar Heels, allowing four runs — three earned — on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

PGA TOUR University

Change Text Size

Thorbjornsen follows Texas Tech University’s Ludvig Åberg, who finished No. 1 in the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking , as the second player in history to earn PGA TOUR membership via a No. 1 finish in their respective PGA TOUR University classes.

Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech, the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking since last month, missed the final three rounds of stroke play due to a back injury , thus ending his chances of chasing down Thorbjornsen for the top spot in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking. Lamprecht finished No. 2, earning Korn Ferry Tour membership for the remainder of the 2024 season, as well as an exemption to Final Stage of 2024 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.

While the top six in the PGA TOUR University Ranking remained unchanged, Stanford University’s Karl Vilips and Baylor University’s John Keefer moved into the top 10 and top 25, respectively. Vilips finished T8 at this week’s NCAA Championship and jumped from No. 14 to No. 10, while Keefer rose from No. 29 to No. 25 with a T11 finish this week.

Pro golfer Grayson Murray, 30, died by suicide, family says

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 1:35 AM EDT / CBS News

The family of pro golfer Grayson Murray, the 30-year-old whose death  was announced on Saturday, said in a statement Sunday that he died by suicide.

The PGA Tour released a statement on behalf of Eric and Terry Murray, the golfer's parents, who said they "have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone."

"It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare," the statement said, adding: "He was loved and he will be missed."

The Murrays thanked the PGA Tour and the golf community for its outpouring of support.

"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," they said.

2024 PGA Championship - Round One

They asked for privacy and asked people to honor their son by being kind to one another.

"If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else," the statement said.

The PGA Tour announced on Saturday that the two-time tour winner had died. CBS Sports reported he had withdrawn from the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.

"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

PGA officials said grief counselors will be made available at all venues this week.

Murray won his second PGA TOUR title at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. He played golf at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University before turning professional. He won his first title at the 2017 Barbasol Championship when he was 23 years old.
